The Bull Inn, Bethersden Bethersden!! Where is Bethersden? Well It’s between Ashford and Tenterden on the A28, right opposite the cricket ground. Where else would it be? Escape from the world to a place of traditional values, good service, with great food and drink. An imposing 17th century Coaching Inn, ‘The bull Inn’ dates back to 1645, four years before the execution of King Charles the 1st. Yet despite many changes over the years it still retains many of the features you would expect from an Inn of this period. Dering arch glazed windows and an open fireplace with oak beam above. Previous membership of the 19th century Cycle Touring Club is still represented by the wings of speed emblem that remains in place on the front wall of the building. And indeed we still welcome Bikes of all types from Penny Farthing to Goldwing The old Coach house stands proudly, albeit on the other side of the road. In the past this has been used as a stable, as well as a mortuary, a Court and even a jail. Inside the Pub you’ll find a warm and inviting log fire in the darker months, and a light open restaurant with patio and gardens in the summer. This year will see the opening of the new discovery trail set in woodland next to the Pub. Food is very important to us all at ‘The Bull’ Our head Chef Drew draws on his wide experience to create new flavours and combinations as well as sticking firmly with tradition with a great ‘Pub Classics’ menu, his team are just as creative, and encouraged to create recipes themselves whenever they can. Weekend Breakfast and Sunday Lunch are almost legendary and probably best to book. Front of House, meticulous attention is given to all our customers, whether it’s just a beer, coffee or a full 3 course meal. “It doesn’t take a lot to make someone feel welcome and comfortable” says Sue the Restaurant Manager, Traditional and special dishes run side by side most days, as well as 2 and 3 course set menus on the weekend. Step back in time with a 1970’s style basket meal in the bar or garden. With prices ranging from £5 to £15 you’re sure to find something that fits the bill. As for the Beer, CAMRA members are always looking for an excuse to test our real ales, “Of course it’s a matter of research you know” they say.

Locally sourced and lovely.. The Duck Inn, Pett Bottom, near Canterbury, is one of the country’s most picturesque inns, nestling deep in the heart of The Garden of England. Surrounded by lush, green fields, The Duck has many claims to fame and can trace its history to 1623 in the reign of James I. In more recent times, it was one of the ‘locals’, the James Bond author, Ian Fleming, who used to sit in The Duck’s beautiful gardens, where he found inspiration for some of the Bond adventures. The Duck itself has its own mention in the Bond story, You Only Live Twice, which, of course, was turned into a highly successful film. The present name is derived from the directive above its low doorway, which advised people to ‘Duck”!. Today The Duck still offers the tradition of olde English hospitality, matched by a wide selection of culinary delicacies and drinks, from wines and spirits to cask ‘real ales.’ Food ranges from bar snacks and garden barbeques to lunches and dinners in the restaurant overlooking Kentish fields, all prepared with fresh, and wherever possible, local produce. The food is prepared by Chef/Patron Jon and his sous chef, and Jon prides himself on producing good tasting food as well as good looking! (They say that people eat with their eyes.) The other unique feature about the Duck’s menu, is the inclusion of local produce, and I mean local… Pheasant, Beef, Pork, Lamb, Rabbit, and even venison is all sourced and supplied by local producers, right on the Duck’s doorstep. Even the eggs come from the pubs own flock of chickens. The Duck is a favourite amongst walkers, and cyclists, and truly is a hidden gem worth seeking out. Joe Brown.. Performing on 25 April 2012 at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone, Joe Brown was one of the original Rock & Roll Stars to come out of the UK. One of the first UK session men, his early career highlights include playing guitar with Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash and other US stars when they came over to Europe. Joe went on to top the charts with his own records, had The Beatles open shows for him and in a career packed with musical highlights has also presented several National series of the Joe Brown Show on UK TV, two series of the Rock Show for BBC Radio 2 and finds time to do around 100 live shows a year in the UK. In 2002 he appeared at the Concert For George to honour the life and memory of his dear friend George Harrison. As his contemporary path is extended Joe’s career has reached further heights. In the last few years he has regularly sold out almost every venue he plays some two or three nights running. In 2008 he returned to the UK Top 20 with an album which was certified as Gold in March 2008 and has now sold in excess of 120,000 copies in the UK. His 50th Anniversary Concert at The Royal Albert Hall was a sell out and in 2009 he was awarded the coveted MOJO Music Magazine award for Lifetime achievement and awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Running for Glory’ is a unique blend of theatre and sporting spectacle, following the lives of an elite group of British athletes (featured in the film ‘Chariots of Fire’) as they blaze their way to glory at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Written by Philip Dart with movement direction by acclaimed choreographer Lawrence Evans, this exciting new play explores the personalities and tensions behind one of Britain’s greatest sporting triumphs: recreating all the excitement of an Olympic race for the small stage.

A DVD filmed at the Wembley date of their UK Arena Tour earlier this year is due out early December from Island Records. McFly are currently writing for their 6th Studio album. Don’t miss one of your chance to catch one the most successful young bands up close and personal.

The Circus of Horrors presents

The Ventriloquist FRIDAY 16TH MARCH

One particular Venue was struggling to make ends meet, new blood was needed and it ws found when Dr Haze rolled into town with his Vampire Vaudeville show, featuring hair hanging beauties, twisted contortionists, flying aerialists, demon dwarfs, gyrating jugglers, voodoo warriors, pickled people, sword swallowers and its latest and greatest new found star The Ventriloquist.

Björn Again & Stavros Flatley SATURDAY 17TH MARCH An evening at the theatre you’ll never forget !! Join in all the fun with Rod Stephen’s production The show features ABBA’s hits and songs from MAMMA MIA together with the legendary voice of host “Tony Blackburn” introducing a selection of past hits and a hilarious performance from Britain’s Got Talent finalists Stavros Flatley. Digging deep into the mind of an obsessed football fan this is Hornby’s story of his Arsenal fixation, as well as a tale of family, football, class, identity and joy. Harking back to the days when football was the people’s game rather than the plaything of corporate sponsors and oligarchs, Fever Pitch is 45 minutes each way of fast, funny, exhilarating theatre.

THEATRE ROYAL MARGATE The Mandolinquents SATURDAY 24TH MARCH, 7.30PM The Mandolinquents are pure entertainment and fantastic fun. Britain’s first modern mandolin quartet play music ranging across all musical genres with a big dollop of witty banter that is a guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. This eclectic quartet is led by one of the world’s leading mandolinists, fine fiddle player and guitarist Simon Mayor, whose jokes are a match for any stand up comic. The other members of the quartet are Hilary James

LEAS CLIFF HALL FOLKESTONE Charlie Landsborough THURSDAY 22ND MARCH Following on from 2006’s inspirationally themed album Heart And Soul, Under Blue Skies sees Charlie Landsborough returning to his more traditional roots of penning tales of love, loss and morality to an infectious melody, the type of which, through songs such as My Heart Would Know and What Colour Is The Wind, has won him so many admirers over the years. Indeed Charlie is in inspired form here, and if you delve deeper into the album, it is easy to find him venturing into territories which he has rarely visited before. Fans of more traditional Charlie however should not harbour any fears, as there are more than enough of his typically thought-inspiring storytelling featured.

Cher Lloyd THURSDAY 29TH MARCH Cher takes her swagger on the road with the announcement of her first full UK tour. She mesmerised The X Factor 2010 audiences with her unique urban-pop performances and strong personal style. Cher first auditioned with Turn My Swag On which became one of the most memorable performances of the series. Cher came an impressive fourth on the show and has since picked up over 50 Million views on YouTube, her debut single Swagger Jagger entered at number-one in the UK Chart and her amazing debut album Sticks + Stones has been a huge hit!

QUARTERHOUSE, FOLKESTONE Showaddywaddy - The Greatest Hits Tour FRIDAY 16 MARCH - 19:30 One of the finest rock & roll revival bands of the 1970s, Showaddywaddy also proved to be one of the most successful and enduring. Originally styled as a British answer to American retromasters Sha Na Na, Showaddywaddy found themselves scooped up into the glam rock basket; indeed, at a time when rival giants Mud, Wizzard, and the Rubettes were also mining the ‘50s for inspiration, Showaddywaddy swept ahead with barely a glance over their shoulder. The group’s run of greatest hits sounds devastatingly pure, even authentic, while further evidence of their resilience can be garnered from the fact that Showaddywaddy are regularly gigging, a full 50 years after the bandmembers first heard the music which brought them such fame.

Henning Wehn - No Surrender

SATURDAY 14 APRIL - 20:00 You may well have heard Henning on BBC Radio’s “Unbelievable Truth”, “News Quiz”, “Now Show” and “Fighting Talk” or seen him on “QI” , “Dave’s One Night Stand” or “Edinburgh and Beyond” – now’s your chance to see the self-appointed German Comedy Ambassador to the UK in the flesh in his sell-out Edinburgh show, “No Surrender”. Tuetonic jolliness at its best. Come along … or else. Deutschland über alles! “Side-splittingly funny” The Scotsman, “A vulnerable man grappling with a language that isn’t his own” The Guardian

GRANVILLE THEATRE, RAMSGATE Michael Jackson UK SATURDAY 7 APRIL There are many Michael Jackson tribute artists in the world today, some dance but cannot sing, others sing but cannot dance. It is almost impossible to find someone with the ability to not only perform live but to authentically capture the essence and the magic of Michael Jackson. With his mesmerising, energetic and dynamic performance, Ben will give you a taste of what it was like to see Michael Jackson live in concert. Ben sings every song entirely live; he has perfected every dance routine and possesses the image and charisma that can be likened only to that of “The King Of Pop” himself.

English Youth Ballet - Swan Lake FRIDAY 23 - 24 MARCH - 7:30PM English Youth Ballet’s professional principal dancers lead the pageantry of a large cast of up to 100 young talented regional dancers in this highly-acclaimed Company. The stunning traditional production puts particular emphasis on the rivalry between the seductive evil Black Swan Odile and the beautiful but vulnerable White Swan Odette, as they compete for the affections of the Prince.

Little Belter THURSDAY 29 MARCH - 7:30PM Little Belter is a brand new show created by Kylie Minogue’s long-serving Musical Director, Steve Anderson and Terry Roland, writer/director behind some of the biggest names in pop, including Girls Aloud, Kylie and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and also the West End smash hit ‘The Hurly Burly Show’. The show sees up-and-coming, critically acclaimed artist Elouise take on some of the biggest, most difficult show-stopping melodies ever written. The petite northerner, along with her band, backing singers and dancers, takes us on an unforgettable musical journey in this candid, fun and heart-warming show, performing unique versions of classic and epic torch ballads by the likes of Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland and Dusty Springfield.

GULBENKIAN THEATRE, CANTERBURY The Table -

Blind Summit Theatre FRIDAY 16 MARCH - 7:45PM Fresh from an award winning sell out run at the Pleasance, Edinburgh, puppet innovators Blind Summit Theatre present their brand new show about a puppet stuck on a table. A visual feast of adult puppetry including a ballet of disembodied heads, a story told entirely with pieces of paper emerging form a briefcase, and a tiny puppet Moses with a cardboard head full of lonely wisdom. MARLOWE THEATRE, CANTERBURY

Curtis Stigers SUNDAY 1 APRIL - 7.30PM Curtis Stigers is one of the most important Jazz singers of his generation and his acclaimed albums have charted in both Britain and America. With his distinctive voice and playing style, this singer, songwriter and saxophonist has become one of the most original and popular interpreters of modern song.

Swallows and Amazons TUESDAY 3 - 7 APRIL - 7.30PM Swallows and Amazons an action packed musical adventure for the whole family direct from the west end. Step aboard The Swallow and join Captain John and his able crew as they set sail to Wildcat Island on an exotic adventure to encounter savages, capture dastardly pirates and defeat mortal enemies. Swallows And Amazons is a story of an idyllic era, of endless summer evenings and the beauty of youthful imagination. This delightful and gloriously imaginative production is directed by Tom Morris (codirector of the international smash-hit War Horse) and is written by Helen Edmundson (writer of the National Theatre’s astonishing Coram Boy). It also features music by Nail Hannon, lead singer of legendary band The Divine Comedy

Paul Merton Out Of My Head

TUESDAY 24 APRIL - 7.30PM Discover the bizarre workings of Paul Merton’s brain, as he muses on the mighty behemoth that is his noggin. Paul returns to his stand-up roots for the first time this century. Away from the Have I got News For You desk Paul Merton proves he’s got legs. A night of sketches, music, magic, variety and dancing girls (two of them aren’t girls)

REVELATION ST MARY’S ASHFORD

Maddy Prior

In Concert with Giles Lewin & Hannah James + Special Guests WEDNESDAY 28 MARCH Some forty years on from her emergence on the late sixties folk circuit, Maddy Prior is one of the most enduring, influential and respected artists in British music, and we’re thrilled to announce that she’ll be joining us in Ashford for a very special performance. Known for both her work as vocalist of Steeleye Span and numerous solo endeavours, Maddy’s career has been a memorable and prolific one, and she remains every bit as engaging an artist today as ever. ‘Superb range… Prior is in fine voice’ – The Telegraph

Claire Martin & special guests SATURDAY 23 APRIL Often acclaimed as the outstanding vocalist of her generation, Claire has an unparalleled reputation in the jazz community, and has been releasing well-received records since 1992. Alongside presenting her highly popular BBC Radio 3 programme, Jazz Line-up, Claire is well known for her collaborations with many of the key figures in 21st century jazz, and her live performances are always highly-anticipated. “The most gifted jazz singer this country has produced in 20 years” – The Sunday Times

Kent Artists dominate the Radio2 Folk Awards To collect an award at the same ceremony as Don McLean is quite an achievement but to carry off two at this prestigious event is quite remarkable. Faversham-based Tim Edey was voted ‘Musician of the Year’ and also scooped up the ‘Duo of the Year’ award alongside Canterbury’s Brendan Power. It was a great night for Canterbury as June Tabor and Oysterband took three awards for ‘Best Traditional Track’, ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Group’. Many of the band live locally and some have been chart-toppers with Fiddlers Dram and Daytrip to Bangor in the heyday of the first folk revival some years ago. These are fabulous achievements and confirm the huge resurgence of interest in folk music recently which has been made evident by a reported 20% increase in album sales of this particular genre over previous years. Young (and not so young) musicians are experimenting and producing great material well worth looking out for. But where can you find this fine Kentish folk you may ask? Well aside from the listings pages of the W3 Guide the answer is to visit your local folk club and discover the wealth of talent, the camaraderie, and the sheer fun of being part of the scene. You will find people who are glad to give up their time for nothing in order to promote this wonderful genre and provide a friendly atmosphere, stunning music (as proved by the awards) and usually there’s a great pint of beer to be had as well! There are membership offers at some clubs with benefits such as discounted entry fees, free admission prizes and, of course, always a CD in the inevitable raffle! Clubs such as Dartford, Faversham, etc. (check Google for your local club or get a copy of Around Kent Folk – kathybobdrage@btinternet.com) offer top class acts all year round and are nowhere near as expensive as, and far more intimate than, large theatres - so join up now and just see what’s on offer!

With Summer in the UK just around the corner, we’re looking forward to the finer things in life that the sunny season affords us here in Kent. Long days and nights on the Kent coast, pick your own strawberries, and the ubiquitous Summer music festival. While it’s true to say that the rise of the Summer music festival has been something of a global phenomenon (every outpost from California to China has it’s own ‘Glastonbury’ these days) it’s fair to say that here in Kent we’ve been spoilt for choice over the past 5 years. Without much travel grief at all we’ve been privy to a constant procession of musical stars from past and present being paraded in front of us through June / July and August like well-kempt sheep at a County show. And this Summer promises to be no less, as our local music festivals, from heavyweights like The Hop Farm and Lounge On The Farm through to new, bijou events such as Smugglers Festival and In The Woods start sharpening their sales-pitches and selling tickets for another bumper crop of phenomenal live music events all on our doorstep. We’ve set-up a facebook page on which to follow all the info as it happens (W3 Gigs&Festivals 2012 calendar) and will be sharing Nile Rodgers brings his band Chic to the most tastiest bits of festivalLounge On The Farm related gossip on these very this July pages throughout the Summer. So without further ado, here’s the highlights from the initial announcements made so far for Summer 2012.

Lounge On The Farm

Sound Island Festival

Chic are the stand-out heritage act announced for Kent so far this year, while Emile Sande and The Wombats will keep the Radio1 crowd happy.

The second of the two days has been announced and it’s a charttopping double bill of Olly Murs & Rizzle Kicks leading the charge for Thanet’s main outdoor-music contender

4th year now and this young ROCK upstart is straight out the blocks with a ferocious line-up including US hardcore heros Converge.

Fifth year of this reggae-vibed festival which heads to the Hop Farm for the first time. If it’s the right weather what could be better than a full weekend of the finest reggae-influenced music?

Converge / Will Haven / Protest The Hero / Deaf Havana / A Wilhelm Scream / The Chariot & many more..

The Hop Farm

Smugglers Festival

29 June - 1 July 2012 Hop Farm, Paddock Wood

No news on line-up for Vince Power’s annual hoo-hah as of the end of February - I imagine they’re having to work quite hard to top anything like Bob Dylan in 2010 and Prince in 2011. But who’d bet against another line-up worthy of the finest of any festival in the land? www.hopfarmfestival.com

A tribute to the music of Hawkwind

Ace Faces - Top mod music Chris Tyler’s been singing since he was a choir boy, aged 10. Alongside fronting numerous bands (Mothers Ruin /Heartstealer) and performing at some of London’s best venues, including Dingwalls and Ronnie Scotts, it’s Chris’ husky voice and canny resemblance to Rod Stewart that has won him the most acclaim. So much acclaim that his band The Ronnies have taken headlining spot at Blackpool’s annual Rod Stewart convention two years in a row and both Rod’s sister Mary and the late Ronnie Lanes brother took the time to congratulate him on his talents. Ace Faces are realising Chris’ ambition of doing something special musically. The band features some of Kent’s finest, including Tony Pepper, a singer songwriter (The Pepper Set), vocalist and guitarist Steve Crispe (Breakthru) and guitarist and keyboard player Leigh Highwood. These four phenomenal musicians playing together leads to some magical moments. Ace Faces play an array of music, mostly from the MOD era, with numbers from Rod Stewart and The Faces, The Small Faces, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Jam and many others, most definitely a song in there for everyone! Ace Faces are securing some high profile gigs but can also be seen on the pub circuit. For any bookings and enquiries please contact limelitelivemusic on 07596 974 282 or email limelitelivemusic@ymail.com

Craig Sheridan

“Music that burns deep inside, open me up, and watch the sparks fly.”

A singer songwriter, the enigmatic artist who has an ear for a killer melody has written and produced some fabulous and infectious tunes. Using the power of music to share his feelings with thought provoking and powerful lyrics some with very up beat and positive tunes, he is an amazing singer with a strong vocal range. His fresh approach makes his debut album Red On Maroon unique and his songs draw on his personal experiences both triumphant and tragic. One of his tunes “Black Rane” has been chosen to be made into a music video to represent Canterbury, whilst 2 tracks were at number one in the Kent Unsigned Chart for over a year after release in Jan 2010

Psychedelic Warlords

A salute to the music of Hawkwind Psychedelic Warlords came to life in 2010, the brainchild of “Hippy” Nick Barnes (Sick Note Blues Band). After watching local band Turmoil play one night Nick decided to form a Hawkwind covers band, an idea he had been thinking about for some years, to perform festivals. The next day Nick recruited Chunk (Turmoil) on vocals, guitar, keys and theremin, Kev Bowyer (Maroon Dogs, Zero Tolerance) on bass and “Animal” Ade (Bam Bam, Main Event) on drums. Rehearsals were going well until Ade announced he was moving back to France. Things went quiet for a bit until Nick recruited friend Andy Juner on drums in 2011. Things have never been quiet since. The band have performed a handfull of gigs locally and gone down a storm. They will perform only one more pub gig before exclusively performing festivals. (There being far too much equipment, lights, lasers etc to do pubs) That one gig will be performed on Saturday night, March 31st at the Royal George in Folkestone. Psychedelic Warlords have already acquired a good core of followers, join them, and experience this band locally while you still can.

Craig performed at The Bands Show Live in February with Jeff Read, The Old Country Crows, Mitch Emery and more. “The Bands Show Live” is at the Astor Theatre Deal every month with great artists showcasing their talent. Craig’s 5 piece rock band, Crashgate is the newest of a long line of rock bands from the South East, carving their own mark on the rock music scene. Crashgate is performing at “PHV Battle of the Bands” on March 16th at the View and Bar Below in Folkestone. If you can’t make that keep a watchful eye out for a gig near you, including appearing at the A Field In Worth Festival on June 23rd and 24th of this year. When Craig is not performing he’s busy raising money and awareness for two favoured charities and has already donated around £1300 from album sales and fundraising. Look out for all the new photographs by Helena Benedict shooting some new pictures for Craig’s Charity Calendar including some photos from Joseph Watts photography. The Calendar will raise funds for two charities, Pilgrims Hospice and St David’s Foundation . If you’re looking for a sure bet on an Acoustic/Rock artist destined for big things, Craig is your man. Contact him via his facebook page.
