Broadstairs Folk Week 8-15 August 2014 Over 600 musicians, singers and dancers pour into Broadstairs for festival week and there’s entertainment in every corner of the town. The headline concerts in the Folk Week concert tent include Seth Lakeman, Dick Gaughan, Bella Hardy and the Midnight Watch, the Moulettes, the Urban Folk Quartet , Tim Edey, Peter Knight’s Gigspanner and many more. There’s a full children’s festival with everything from magic shows, puppet shows, make and take workshops, music and dance to join in with; circus skills and a special Big Parade – not to mention the Hooden Horses and Clarence the Dragon every day at the bandstand in the free family show. There’s loads of opportunities to join in for adults too – especially if you have always longed to brush up your bazooka, banjo or cajon playing – or start afresh with Cajun dancing. There’s over 70 different workshops to choose from. Broadstairs Folk Week at the Pavilion-on-the-Sands If you only go to the Pavilion on the Sands during this year’s Broadstairs Folk Week, you will find an eye-watering variety of dance and music – sway along to Bollywood rhythms, swing your partner around to hot jive or get to grips with the intricate weaving in and out moves of a ceilidh. Think pink with Tickled Pink fancy-dress night, immerse yourself in the sounds of Cajun and Zydeco, East European Klezmer or have a go at Appalachian clogging. Every lunch-time there’s a Family Ceilidh when you can swing your grandpa around the floor –whether he likes it or not! There are some terrific Late Night dance bands lined up. Dutch band Zorita are a raucous rabble whose bohemian music boasts an eclectic mix of instruments of accordion, trumpet and violin, bass, drums and guitars that blends influences from South America, the Mediterranean and Folk. Rob Heron and the Teapad Orchestra play their own brand of western swing, blues, gypsy jazz and country, or “North Eastern Swing” as they’ve coined it. Tankus the Henge are a six piece powerhouse drawing influences from old time fairgrounds to modern day Circus via the Beatles, Tom Waits, Gogol Bordello and Radiohead. They embody a sound that lies somewhere between south-east London and the carnival of New Orleans. Toothless Mary are skanking their way around the folk scene, armed with original tunes that reflect the music of Jamiroquai, James Brown, and the Prodigy to keep you dancing all night. If your dancing feet need a rest, there are plenty of concerts all around town – the headliners such as Bella Hardy, Dick Gaughan, the Urban Folk Quartet and Jamie Smith’s Mabon in the Pierremont park marquee as well as smaller scale gigs all around the town. For more details, check out the website www.broadstairsfolkweek.org.uk Tickets are available online or by calling 01843 604080.

Create Festival Saturday 26 July With an estimated 13,000 visitors throughout the day, Ashford Create Festival is one of the South East’s biggest free music festivals. Last year there was even more reason to celebrate, as Create was 18 years old! – So now that they are all grown up and heading towards our 19th birthday, Create is promising to continue showcasing the best of local and national talent in the glorious surrounds of Victoria Park. It’s come a long way since its origins, now hosting four live music stages, national headline acts, spoken word events, street performers, local market stalls, food vendors, a beer tent, children’s play areas and rides. Create 2013 saw UK band Dodgy headline the festival on Sunday night with Charlatan’s Tim Burgess performing an intimate set at the ’Create Friday Night Soundcheck’ at Revelation St. Mary’s. Ashford Create Festival 2014 promises to be even better with a ‘Saturday Night Sound Check’ with Toploader, and Nizlopi headlining the free festival in the park on Sunday 27th July – so please mark the date and the whole weekend in the calendar now, as there are sure to be more announcements and surprises! Below we showcase some of the biggest acts appearing in Ashford that day..

Create Main Stage: Nizlopi With a fierce reputation for inspiring, moving, live shows - Nizlopi are John Parker (double bass/beat box) and Luke Concannon (vocals/guitar), a duo who sound like a four piece, folk hip-hop band. Most widely known, for being the underground, independent act that topped the UK charts with ‘The JCB song’ in 2005, they have come back together to perform new material, songs from their two previous albums and material for Luke’s new solo album ‘Give It All’. The Intermission Project Two former Primary School friends from Ashford were reunited at Sixth Form College through their love of music. With an acoustic, folk, soul sound their wonderfully crafted songs and velvety soulful voices reveal a maturity way beyond their years. These two 19-year olds have created a sound so very beautiful, thought provoking and immediately captivating that it leaves you singing their tunes over and over. Coco & the Butterfields Crowned the nation’s “best unsigned act” at UK Live & Unsigned, CoCo and the Butterfields perform a uniquely irresistible mix of folk, pop and hip hop. Recently supporting the likes of Bastille, Seasick Steve and Wheatus, they regularly pack out shows across the country. Check them out this festival season!

Kent’s Artisan Cider Festival at Brogdale Over 70 Artisan Ciders… Local Produce… Hogroast & BBQ…… Live Bands 23 & 24 August 2014

This year at the Brogdale Artisan Cider Festival The Cider Barn will offer over 70 different artisan ciders and perrys across the weekend ranging from micro producers to some of the larger artisan producers such as the Kent Cider Company. Local live bands will play throughout the weekend featuring Rudy Warman & the Heavy Weather on Saturday and Bombus on Sunday. Kent is starting to make a name for itself as a serious producer of top quality Cider. The small producers in Kent are on the rise and have barrels of new tastes and textures. The main bar will be run by Tiddly Pomme who are based at Brogdale and make their own cider called Woolly Pig. Other producers will be running mini bars of their own Cider including the Kent Cider Company, Turners Cider, Biddenden Vineyards and London Glider. The festival is to include a range of entertainment for visitors to enjoy over the weekend. A juicing competition will demonstrate how the traditional pulp and press method stands against the strain method of obtaining fresh apple juice. The pulp and press team will be led by Peter Eveleigh of Hardwood Crafts who will be equipped with an electric mill and two manual presses, all of his own fabrication. On the strain team Nevin Stewart and co will put two high performance juicers to the juice and strain task. Guided orchard tours of the National Fruit Collection will run throughout the day both by foot and tractor trailer. The collections preserve around 100 different cider apple varieties, all with individual characteristics which contribute to the taste and texture of a cider. The festival food court is to include a Hogroast, BBQ, Indian Cuisine, Crepes, Mexican and Twisted Chips. Local produce and crafts will fill the Makers Tent and children will be entertained with games, kite flying and creative crafts. Theatre Tributes, Comedy, Drama, Musicals July / August 2014 As usual, local theatres are spoiling us with a diverse and interesting variety of shows this Summer. Top acts, internationally renowned shows, and iconic live bands provide us with some top comedy, music, drama, opera, dance, & family shows… and even some good old seaside variety as well!!

Dawn French

The Bad Shepherds

De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill Sunday 17th August

30 Million Minutes UK Tour 2014 Orchard Theatre, Dartford Wed 30 July - Sat 2 August See this show now, because Dawn French is convinced it won’t be long before she is far to doo-lalley to perform it! Dawn French, the Queen of British comedy. The awardwinning actor, bestselling novelist and all round very funny lady has written a new show, based on her life and career, called 30 Million Minutes.

Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra Winter Gardens, Margate Friday 29th August

30 Million Minutes will consist of various delights and riches, with the odd irksome tribulation thrown in, as Dawn takes audiences through the various lessons life has taught her, and the things she knows for sure. With a sharp eye for comic detail and a wicked ear for the absurdities of life, Dawn French of Cornwall shares how she has misguidedly spent her whole life vigorously attempting to be a fully functioning female human. Her extraordinary lack of willpower, combined with an enviable knack for nosey parking and showing off, has driven her to grapple with the big stuff of life in public. 30 million minutes of life in fact. That’s how long she’s been alive. It’s also worth coming if only to finally witness what size she actually is. Can we believe the stolen images of so many women’s magazines? What is the truth? Is she so unfeasibly large that she can hardly live? Or does she sleep in a matchbox? Marvel at how one woman can mercilessly murder so much chocolate, and yet remain so curiously slim… Catch the show. Or feel like a fool.

Both have truly met their match, revealing their competitive natures as they vie for best shot - and each other’s hearts, sweet and funny. The two sharp shooters , find their love for each other undermined by professional rivalry. It’s hilariously encapsulated in one of the show’s most famous songs, Anything You Can Do. English Youth Ballet presents Giselle

Fri 15th & Sat 16th August

A dramatic new production to celebrate 15 years of EYB. English Youth Ballet presents an appealing and dramatic production of Giselle set on an English country estate with an ‘upstairs downstairs flavour’ about a young girl who is betrayed by the Prince Albert who is also engaged to Lady Bathilde. This leads to a macabre, ghoulish scene dominated by Wilis who are young women gilted in love and who rise from their graves at night and take revenge on any man who crosses their path. With enchantingly sumptuous costumes, pretty scenery and spectacular dancing the production brings Giselle into this century with warmth, colour and drama.

Bugle Boy D-Day Tour Friday 29th August

When he eventually succeeds in his quest; he and his family only enjoy the fruits of fame for three short years. When America joined the Second World War after the bombing of Pearl Harbour; he joins the Army, forms the subsequently famed A.E.F Band and flies to Europe to play to the Armed Forces; then goes missing in mysterious circumstances.

With silly Vikings, puppets, projection and live music, we go on a journey of adventure and discovery, accompanied by the brave and mighty ThorNogson and the great green bird Graculus to do battle against the fearsome dragon and the dastardly deeds of Noggin’s wicked uncle, Nogbad the Bad! With simple techniques and delightful storytelling, (children’s entertainment once moved at a less frenetic pace) this is a piece of theatre to sit and watch together with your children. Red Ladies features 18 women, identically dressed in red headscarves red stilettos, black trench coats and sunglasses. The piece has two elements: the outside ‘missions’ in public spaces (streets, rooftops, riverbanks, public gardens, beaches) and the indoor ‘theatrical demonstration’. When they arrive in a town or city the Red Ladies draw attention to the architecture, the plants, the wildlife. They observe. They place sites of political importance under surveillance. They map the city and make connections between things within it.

Toploader’s live career began playing with Coldplay and Muse in small venues across the UK. They later went on to headline summer festivals and became the last British band to play the original Wembley Stadium. Joseph Washbourn (vocals & keys), Dan Hipgrave (guitar), Matt Knight (bass) and Rob Green (drums), returned in 2011 from an eight year hiatus with third studio album ‘Only Human’, produced by Danton Supple (Morrissey and Coldplay) to rave reviews: Toploader’s live set continues to impress, as the band revisit all of their singles including ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’, ‘Achilles Heel’ and ‘Time Of My Life’ as well as introducing fans to their brand new material.

Faulty Towers Dining Experience Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury Thursday 14th August Following a tremendous year that included sold-out seasons in Canada, Sydney Opera House and Edinburgh Fringe, Australia’s much feted tribute to the BBC’s best-loved sitcom continues to tour the world. Only one third of this two-hour show is scripted, so anything can happen as audiences take their seats in the ‘Fawlty Towers’ restaurant. Waited upon by Basil, Sybil and Manuel, this is fully immersive, highly improvised and site-specific comedy theatre at its best. Expect all the best gags, shambolic service and a ‘70s style 3-course meal in ‘top end entertainment that will knock you for six’ (What’s on London). Just don’t mention the war! Faulty Towers The Dining Experience was born in Brisbane in 1997 and made its international debut in 2008 at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it’s sold out every year since. It opened a residency in London’s West End in October 2012 and continues there still. Eight teams of cast now tour the world non-stop.

Glyndebourne – La Traviata (LIVE Cinema) Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury Sunday 10th August At one of her brilliant supper parties, the beautiful but frail Violetta Valéry meets the well-born Alfredo Germont, and for love of him abandons her feverish life of pleasure. Alfredo’s father intrudes on their idyllic existence in the country and persists in his demand that Violetta renounce Alfredo. Violetta determines to make the sacrifice, leaving only a note for Alfredo. She appears at a ball in Flora’s house on the arm of an old admirer, Baron Douphol, to the fury of Alfredo. The two men play at cards; Alfredo wins. Unable to persuade Violetta to go with him, Alfredo insults her and is challenged by the Baron. Violetta becomes ill, and all her friends desert her, leaving her penniless. Alfredo at last returns. His father has told him of Violetta’s noble renunciation, and urged him to seek her forgiveness. Overjoyed at the sight of him, Violetta attempts to rise. But it is too late. As Germont and the doctor enter, Violetta dies in Alfredo’s arms. New production of the Verdi’s opera, conducted by Sir Mark Elder and directed by Tom Cairns.

What The Ladybird Heard Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury Saturday 16th August Two crafty robbers, one tiny ladybird, and a whole farmyard of fun! Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len have a cunning plan to steal the farmer’s fine prize cow. But the tiniest, quietest creature of them all, The Ladybird, has a plan of her own! Join the woolly sheep, the hairy hog, the fat red hen and the dainty dog in this brand-new stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson & Lydia Monks’s colourful farmyard adventure. With live music, puppetry, plenty of audience participation and lots of laughs!

The Bad Shepherds De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill Sunday 17th August The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occasionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70’s. And you know what? Maybe it just is? Steeleye Span Revelation St Marys, Ashford Friday 29th August Folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span are celebrating 45years with a new live show. Maddy Prior the voice of Steeleye leads a line-up featuring faces old and new. Having recently collaborated with Sir Terry Pratchett on their new album Wintersmith, the evening will see a mixture of the new album along with the familiar classics and gems. The band released their new album Wintersmith in collaboration with Sir Terry Pratchett at the end of 2013. A record based on Pratchett’s Wintersmith novel, the subject matter was completely appropriate for Steeleye, a tale of ancient rituals and secret folk dances that perfectly complemented their previous work whilst taking it in new directions. 2014 sees Steeleye Span emerging on another new exciting chapter. With the departure of fiddle player and long standing member Peter Knight the band introduce Jessie May Smart. A departure to what we have come accustomed to with Steeleye Span, Jessie is a young, vibrant talent who trained with Richard Ireland at Trinity College of Music before going onto The University of Nottingham and who’s CV includes working on The X Factor and with Katie Melua. ELVIS COSTELLO

Elvis Costello and The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, and are making a return to the South East on the 17 July at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill. Always innovative, and always unique, every Elvis Costello show promises a different take onn a highly-cherished back catalogue and this stop promises no less. Costello’s songs have been recorded by a great number of artists. The list of performers reflects his interest in a wide range of musical styles: George Jones, Chet Baker, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Robert Wyatt, Charles Brown, No Doubt, Solomon Burke, June Tabor, Howard Tate, the gospel vocal group The Fairfield Four and the viol consort Fretwork with the countertenor Michael Chance. In 2003, he began a songwriting partnership with his wife, the jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall, resulting in six songs included in her highly successful album ‘The Girl In The Other Room’. I wonder if Mrs Costello AKA Diana Krall will be there?

Robert Brown Robert Brown is an emerging singer songwriter with obvious comparisons such as Nick Drake, Davy Graham and Jimmy Page, not only in his writing but with his remarkable finger style technique. “I was lucky as a kid. When I was 17 I got to tour with Dick Heckstall Smith, and later in my teens I toured the southern states for 6 months with the US funk rock outfit the Blast. It was a crazy learning curve in which I saw our promoter being shot and having Boy Georges producer chasing us all over Houston thinking we were the next big thing and had free coke to burn!” Whilst touring in New York last year, he was also approached by Alice Cooper’s Press agent and tour manager after they heard a particular track. Songs that are remembered the next day seem to be one of his main gifts. Extensive travelling in Europe, North Africa and North America have enabled Robert to absorb the music and culture, and this emerges in subtle rootsy nuances within his work. Some obvious, some hidden to all but the expert ear. Robert is happy to be approached by labels or artists requiring material for their own releases. He has an extensive back catalogue ranging from country Ballads to Folk, to Hardcore Rock. He has also released his debut solo album on his own label. Robert Brown delivers a wealth of styles and emotions throughout the roots spectrum. His psychedelic folk cum blues cum jazz set is unique yet accessible, eccentric yet consistent. The unique sound world this singer/songwriter creates with an Acoustic guitar plus an array of diverse percussion instruments including a large gong has captivated audiences across London. Catch him at The Chambers Folkestone this July 17th 2014

Folkestone Ska Fest 8th, 9th and 10th of August

This years event (in its 5th year from its original roots as the Folkestone Skabour Festival) will be principally based at Folkestone’s well known concert venue The Leas Cliff Hall and the venue’s Channel Suite function rooms. As with previous years FOLKESTONE SKA FEST will also embrace the community festival atmosphere it has become known for by encompassing many of the town’s and harbour pubs, clubs and bars. The festival also expands into the immediate surrounding area of the Leas with FREE community areas including a Ska Fest Market on the Leas Cliff Hall roof top. In addition the Ska Fest Island on The Leas grass areas with a steel band to create a calypso caribbean atmosphere. Plus, a classic Scooter Park, organised by South Coast Pirates scooter club which again this year will feature scooter clubs ‘ride out’ and various other awards. The main stage at Leas Cliff Hall itself commences on Friday August 8th skinhead reggae legend ROY “MR SYMARIP” ELLIS and on Saturday August 9th one of the most important vocal harmony groups ever to come out of Jamaica THE PIONEERS. Sundays headliners WINSTON FRANCIS with THE SKAMANIANS and THE JUDGE DREAD MEMORIAL BAND plus a full supporting bill of bands and DJs for the main hall will be announced as they are confirmed. Ones To Look Out For

All My Ghosts All My Ghosts are a singer/songwriter duo made up from the beautiful vocal stylings, guitar playing and songwriting ability of Jessica Lyon-Wall and the guitar and vocal of Matt ‘Sharky’ Finn. They came together in September 2012, after clocking up around 14 years each of playing and singing as solo artists. They began writing their own material from the beginning, and in April 2013, they entered the studio for the first time, where they recorded their first EP, “The Silver Sessions EP”. From this EP they released the single “The Killing Jar”, which was available across many download sites. Their musical genre is hard to pin down, as they can write anything from folk, to rock, to blues, jazz and country. In July, they recorded a live album, which is now available on their bandcamp site, along with the EP. They re-entered the studio in April of this year, and have just finished recording their new album “the stuff that keeps you sane” due for release on 14th July. To find out more about the band, look on the following sites.

The band re-formed in 2010 and has played nonstop with an impressive array of live shows already on its CV. They performed at MAG Farmyard Party and played main support at the BMF Biker Festival in September 2012. They have also played at the world famous Underworld in Camden Town Dec 2012, supporting the mighty Skreamer and was asked to perform at The World Zombie Day, London Oct 2013.

// Gig Guide // A Summer update..

What a cracking start to the summer, great weather, great music and thanks to a very dodgy referee, some shocking defending and an inbuilt ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, we no longer have to fret about the England football team. There is definitely something in the Bristol water, …I say bring it on if the musical conveyor belt down there keeps running! Ushti Baba are a up and coming newly formed party band playing with different genres based around gipsy jazz. My latest and greatest Bristol favourite are a hiphop/drum and bass 6 piece called the Inexplicables. They have a fantastic sound powered by a hughly talented base player and beatboxer who really is an example of ‘how to beatbox within a band’. Bella Trix, watch out. Coming closer to home another early summer highlight has been the Sussex based FunDubMental. I’ve seen this outfit over the last few years and they really are simply getting better and better. An excellent fun time, smile lots, dance manic, band. On this Sussex note also check out the Crinkle Cuts if you’re a fan of funk. I couldn’t really write in a Kent music column without shouting about some of our own local artists. Shout one goes to Hobo and the Hippies. a new but very tight and exciting 4 piece hailing from the wilds of north Kent. My second shout goes to Mahalas, a stunning stop -you -in –your- mellow –tracks Canterbury 3 piece playing some of the most beautiful music I’ve heard in ages. My last Kentish shout goes to Thanet based Ska band Beggars Belief, big sound, big attitude, big party, enough said. I’m going to leave you with the age old shout out to support your local music venue with a drink or two…. in fact I’ve also found out you can also support your local musician in very much the same way! Cheers… Euan

Create Music Festival.. Keeping it local The Create Music Festival is featured elsewhere in the guide (page 12) but the local band line-up this year is so good we thought it only fair to feature some more of the highlights.. It’s not just about Nizlopi , who will be headlining the free festival in the park on Sunday 27th July – there’s also some of the finest up and coming acts of the local music scene to go and feast yourself on..

Right Track Music Stage:

Old Town Souls Formed in the summer of 2012, they have been gigging up and down the UK but are mainly based in Kent. Their original material has a classic rock vibe being inspired by bands likewww.createfestival.co.uk Free, Black Crowes, and Led Zeppelin which they also intersperse with some covers by similar groups. @ashfordcreate Moorland ashfordcreate Two guys and great friends who have played together for more years than they can count - have formed this new acoustic rock band. With lots of new material coming out of the studio this year, it’s the playing of this work live and seeing others reactions is their main drive. Powerful, yet calm melodies - don’t miss out on being part of this band’s ever growing following. Praeter Formed in September 2013, this Ashford based hardcore band cites the Create Festival as one of its influences on shaping their musical tastes and great memories over the years. Influences include Vanna, Sick Of It All, Stray From The Path, and Counterparts to name a few. Produced by: Ashford Borough Council Design & Illustration: www.hairyhand.co.uk

Revelation St Mary’s Stage:

High Tide This highly original and soulful trio formed in early 2012 after meeting at Uni. From there, High Tide have gained momentum across Kent and beyond, writing original folk-pop numbers and creating blistering unique covers. They perform genuinely exciting intimate gigs, and generate a strong rapport with their audience. Orfila Acoustic trio from Folkestone consisting of siblings Abi, Louise and Matt Orfila. Accomplished musicians and songwriters in their own right they have supported many famous acts around the UK and Europe and are regularly featured on BBC Radio Kent Introducing. Fall in love with their distinctive sound and blending three part harmonies. Create Music Festival, Victoria Park, Ashford Sunday 27th July
