Autumn 2014 SV SHTANDART
19 Sep 2014 - 23 Sep 2014 The frigate ‘Shtandart’ is a fullsize replica of a ‘man’o’war’ that was the first vessel of the Russian Baltic fleet will be visiting Ramsgate Royal Harbour between 19 - 23 September Construction of the original was personally directed by Peter the Great following his protracted visits to, and study at British Royal dockyards. It was launched in 1703. The replica was built in St-Petersburg and launched in 1999. Shtandart took part in the Northern War as Peter’s flagship but in 1719 she was laid up as a museum ship for several years because Peter had ordered she was to be “preserved for ever as a monument to the art of shipbuilding”. However, the ship deteriorated and in 1728 the vessel had become derelict and was broken up. At the time, Peter’s widow Catherine ordered that a replica be built - but this didn’t happen until nearly 300 years later! In 1999 a group of young shipwrights at a shipyard in St Petersburg found themselves with little work following perestroika. However, there was a considerable stock of suitable timber available so they determined to revive the spirit of Peter the Great by building a replica of his flagship. The keel was laid in November 1994 and five years later in September 1999 the new Shtandart was launched. The new vessel was built from the plans used for the original, and her exterior and interior faithfully recreate one of the most significant eighteenth century ships. Shtandart is a sea-going sail training ship and with her young crew - mostly from Russia, the ship has become a firm favourite at many maritime festivals around Europe Shtandart is an impressive and interesting attraction, and a prestigious venue for receptions and corporate events. Below decks is a museum exhibition and the impressive admiral’s cabin. 19 - 22 September open 10am-7pm and 23 September 10am -6pm Opportunity for Sailing Trips *Chatham - Ramsgate £99 per person Depart Chatham on 17th at 8am, arriving at Ramsgate on 18th at 6pm, to disembark 19th at 10am *Ramsgate - London £79 per person Depart Ramsgate 23rd at 8pm, arriving London on 24th at 3pm To book tickets on one of these sailing trips please contact the Thanet Visitor Information on 01843 577577

Canterbury Festival Returning for its 31st year this October, Canterbury Festival will present over 200 events at a variety of venues including the return of the Festival Spiegeltent. Adorned with velvet and decorated with mirrors and stained glass, it is the perfect backdrop for spectacular cabaret, circus, puppetry, comedy, dance, music and family events. If folk is your style, the chart topping Moulettes will be performing their psychedelic neo-classical folk rock, as part of their current Constellations UK tour. For folk of a slightly more traditional approach, Alister Atkin and the Ghost Line Carnival will play their melodic, sea-shanty inspired tune whilst local band, Gentlemen of Few, combine folk harmonies with their old school bluegrass roots. Their mixture of talent, youth and style ensure they are a band to keep an eye on after reaching the finals of the BBC Radio 2 Young Musicians Folk Award. At the Marlowe Theatre, musical legend Hugh Masekela, wellknown for his collaboration with Paul Simon on Graceland, will take you on a journey from apartheid South Africa to 1960s New York and his subsequent return to South Africa to explore the musical roots of his homeland. Opening the Spiegeltent is Geno Washington. Hailed as the godfather of Soul, Rhythm and Blues, he was once supported by Jimi Hendrix and his performance at the Festival is one not to miss. Several of the bands this year take their inspiration from a bygone era. The FB Pocket Orchestra return to the Festival to perform their mix of hot jazz, blues and ragtime and The Ragroof Players will be hosing a tea dance, performing authentic music from the 1920s-50s in vintage costumes. For something completely different come and check out the Moscow Drug Club, who perform a unique blend of gypsy, tango, swing and cabaret. Combining original material with classic tracks by Cohen and Waits, this group will transport you to a dark, smoke filled, bar in Eastern Europe where doors are locked and the drinking is compulsory. The Spiegeltent’s glamour lends itself perfectly to a fantastic selection of cabaret nights. Acts include the cult phenomenon Bourgeois and Maurice, an award winning sibling act steeped in sugar coated satire, subversive songs and sequins and Cabaret Fantastique, who will provide a little bit of je ne sais quoi thanks to debonair raconteur comedian Marcel Lucont and his special guests. Two circus companies will be coming to Canterbury this year. Casus Circus will perform three different shows including a European premiere of Finding the Silence where the simplicity of their staging amplifies the mind blowing physical abilities of the performers. At the other end of the spectrum, Flown (performed by Pirates of the Carabina) will take over the Marlowe Theatre as their troupe of acrobats, aerialists and daredevil stuntmen wreak havoc as everything appears to go wrong; catastrophe is just one wrong move away! And finally, the Festival also has a top notch line up of comedy entertainment. Fans of Whose Line Is It Anyway? will be excited to hear that the Spiegeltent will be hosting Stephen Frost’s Improv Allstars which will see four performers take to the stage with no script and just the audience as inspiration. Over at Shirley Hall, satirical comedian Simon Evans brings his new show Leashed - an inaccurate account of a misspent youth. How can he reconnect with the spontaneity of his former unburdened self? Well apparently buying a dog is not the answer. Tickets for all these shows and many more are available via the website www.canterburyfestival.co.uk or via the Festival Box Office at the Marlowe Theatre on 01227 787787.

TENTERDEN FOLK FESTIVAL 2014 Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th October
The 22nd Tenterden Folk Festival includes something for all the family and aims to promote not only traditional and contemporary English folk song, music and dance but also crafts and traditions, hence the number of free events over the long weekend. The most prominent of this year’s local bands are probably Gentleman of Few, a young bluegrass band from South East Kent, and Green Diesel, a folk rock band from Faversham. Free showcases take place not only on the marquee stage but also in the pubs and even in St Mildred’s Church where on Sunday you can see The Yardarm Folk Orchestra from Essex and The Sussex Folk Orchestra. The ladies are not forgotten either and are represented by Worry Dolls, a quirky, young, indie folk duo and Rosie May from Somerset who performs traditional folk and medieval melodies. The Thursday evening pre-festival concert features folk icon Ashley Hutchings, founder of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Albion Band, together with Ken Nicol. They are supported by retired sub-mariner Tom Lewis and Tenterden’s own Mark Gibson. One of the best and most inspiring singer songwriters on the folk scene also returns to Tenterden; Jez Lowe whose songs about his native North East of England are often assumed to be tradition. You can find more details of these and other guests on our website. One of the special events to look out for will be Barrack Room Ballads and other songs of military life: This is a themed concert to commemorate the 1st World War. Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) lived for many years at Batemans, in nearby Burwash, and wrote a collection of poems on the subject of soldiers’ lives. Many of the poems have been set to music and have become part of the folk song tradition. The event will feature several of the festival guests including Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. Festival venues range from pubs bars to The Town Hall, Tenterden Club, St. Mildred’s Church and Church Hall, The Saddlery, The Barrel House, Indulgence Cake and Coffee House and of course many events take place in the open air in the High Street and in the Marquees on The Recreation Ground. We are even including the recently opened Old Dairy Brewery in the festival as they are offering tours on Friday and Saturday and donated raffle prizes. For more information and to buy tickets visit the website at www. tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk or for more information about the craft fair and stalls go to www.tenterdencraftfair.org.uk. British Sea Power with the Redbridge Brass Band ‘Sea of Brass’ De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill Fri 24 October,
After working with musical arranger Peter Wraight (Matthew Herbert Big Band), the chart-topping indie rock band British Sea Power will be touring UK venues performing their favourite songs from a ten year back catalogue in collaboration with championship brass bands from across the country. British Sea Power are a six-piece band originating from Cumbria, Yorkshire, Ealing and Shropshire who have released seven albums since 2003 and are currently the longest-serving band/artist signed to Rough Trade Records. Their track Remember Me was voted number 9 in the most important hundred tracks of BBC6 Music’s lifetime by the station’s listeners and have enjoyed an array of muscial endorsements from the likes of David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Radiohead and Flaming Lips. Redbridge Brass Ensemble formed started competing in 1970. They formed out of the Redbridge Music School and entered the top level Championship Section in 1986 where it has remained ever since. In 2008 Redbridge made its Glastonbury debut performed live on stage with ‘Hot Chip’ in front of 40,000 people. This is the first time British Sea Power have entered a music collaboration with another performing group and this project has been two years in the making already. BSP are known for their sell-out rock performances as much as they are for their sensitive film scorings, including the recent ‘From the Sea to the Land Beyond’ which has now been released by Rough Trade as British Sea Power’s seventh LP and was voted Guardian’s album of the week in December 2013.
LEVEL 42 - ‘THE SIRENS TOUR 2014’
Winter Gardens Margate 4th October Level 42 have relished global success for over 30 years producing an impressive discography packed with hit tunes in the instantly recognisable sound they’re loved for, and with the release of their latest EP ‘Sirens’ on the brand new Level 42 Records, they’ve gone right back to their roots with founder member Mike Lindup’s trademark vocals and multi- layered synths, driven as always by Mark King’s thundering bass lines, and Pete-Ray Biggin’s jaw dropping drums with remixes by the master John Morales. To date the band and Mark have released 14 studio albums, 7 live albums, and 6 compilation albums, had 18 top 40 singles, including Lessons in Love, Something About You, Leaving Me Now, Running in the Family, and Hot Water, sold out Wembley Arena for a total of 21 nights and sold in excess of 30 million albums worldwide. In short they proved to be one of the biggest British bands of the 1980’s, and recent reissues as a major format has seen a host of re-masters and releases from Universal Music, Studio Hamburg, and River Records among others. In 2001 Mark King acquired the rights to the name ‘Level 42’ and took the band back out on the road again where they continue to win over audiences where their unique sound and virtuosity as instrumentalists remains an inspiration to young players the world over.

Jimmy Carr… Funny Business Tuesday 30th September
Jimmy Carr has been described as ‘the hardest working man in comedy’. Which, let’s face facts, is not that impressive. It’s like being the ‘Tallest Dwarf’ or the ‘Healthiest Glaswegian’. Really not that big a deal. Funny Business is Jimmy’s brand new stand up show. Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition; stay for his renowned adult humour. MULTIPLE CHOICE - JIMMY CARR’S ‘FUNNY BUSINESS’ WILL BE: a) Packed with jokes b) Rude and offensive c) A great night out d) £26.00 a ticket If you answered a) b) c) or d) you were right! This show is not suitable if you are easily offended. The show is not suitable for anyone who hasn’t bought a ticket.
Henning When…Eins Zwei DIY Saturday 4th October
After more than a decade in Britain, the German Comedy Ambassador has ‘groan’ to like puns…though he still couldn’t eat a whole one. As Henning’s assimilation is not yet complete he hasn’t lost his sense of Westphalian wonderment at the foibles of British society. Why does everybody want to be owned by a house? What’s wrong with having the Euro? And why hold society and government responsible for personal underachievement? You’ve only got yourself to blame for not being born into a better social class. Expect an evening-long crash course in personal accountability and have a right old laugh at the same time! Wunderbar !!
THE WOMAN IN BLACK THE MOST TERRIFYING LIVE THEATRE EXPERIENCE IN THE WORLD …..Everybody in the theatre can hear you scream! Tuesday 7th – Sat 11th October

Now celebrating 25 years in the West End, The Woman In Black is ‘a marvellous exercise in tension, spun from perfectly paced storytelling’ (The Independant) that has enthralled over 7 million people since its original debut. Feel the power of The Woman In Black for yourself and experience the ‘most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter’ (The Daily Telegraph).

Great Expectations
Theatre Royal Margate 3rd October Christmas Eve, 1803… Pip, a seven yearold orphan boy, visits his mother’s grave. A frightening encounter with an escaped convict begins a series of events that will change his life forever. Written by one of England’s greatest authors, Charles Dickens, Great Expectations is the profound and complex story of Pip’s journey through life. Some of his most memorable characters – the terrifying Magwitch, Joe Gargery the kind and generous blacksmith, the eccentric Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Mr Jaggers the pompous lawyer and Pip’s wise friend Herbert Pocket – are vividly brought to life in this anarchic and joyful telling of this glorious tale. Using Dickens’ original text (well, mostly!), David Mynne takes you on a journey that brings you a ‘cast of thousands’ in a skilful, oneman adaptation of this epic story. Be prepared to be scared and amazed and cry and laugh

Jethro – The Legend at Large Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone October 24th.
The Cornish legend of comedy is back and hitting the UK with his 2014 tour. Jethro, the world’s funniest Cornishman will be bringing his unique brand of irrepressible and irresistible West Country wit to Folkestone. Jethro is the stage name of English stand-up comedian Geoffrey Rowe, based in Lewdown in Devon. Rowe was born in 1948 in St Buryan, a village in Cornwall. After leaving school, Rowe was apprenticed as a carpenter and then worked as a timber man in a tin mine. At the age of eighteen he joined the St. Just and District Operatic Society and, in addition to his bass voice, locals found he had a talent for making an audience laugh. He began visiting the pubs of Cornwall to sing and joke and was quickly hailed as Cornwall’s top comic. Jethro has appeared in some small-screen outings include The Des O’Connor Show, where he appeared a record nine times, and five appearances on Jim Davidson’s Generation Game, twice to make a Cornish Pasty. “Jethro is so funny it hurts” – The Sun “The Master of comedy” – The Mail Jethro is one of the most well-known and loved comedians and you’re guaranteed a night of unforgettable comedy Canterbury Festival Spiegeltent Broadway Choir & Friends St Gregory’s Piano in the Woods Shirley Hall David Starkey Spiegeltent Finding the Silence St Mary’s Dylan Thomas: Return Journey Marlowe Theatre Flown Spiegeltent Treetop Flyers SATURDAY 25TH OCTOBER Astor Community Theatre Deal The Animals and Friends with Steve Cropper Exchange Studio @ Hazlitt Theatre Maidstone Pete Johannson Several Jokes Exchange Theatre Maidstone Pete Johansson Sevral Jokes Leas Cliff Hall Folkestone Chas & Dave Marlowe Theatre Canterbury Andy Zaltzman Satirist For Hire Theatre Royal Margate The Boy Who Kicked Pigs Canterbury Festival Spiegeltent Top Choir Kent: Cantate Shirley Hall VOCES8 Workshop Spiegeltent Comedy Club 4 Kids Marlowe Theatre Flown Marlowe Theatre Flown Canterbury Cathedral VOCES8 St Mary’s A November Day Shirley Hall Simon Evans Spiegeltent Bourgeios & Maurice Spiegeltent Late Night at the Spiegeltent SUNDAY 26TH OCTOBER Brook Theatre Chatham You Can’t Stop The Beat

THE BOY WHO KICKED PIGS
Theatre Royal Margate 25th October BY KILL THE BEAST BASED ON THE BOOK BY TOM BAKER 13 year old Robert Caligari is a nasty piece of work. But today is the day he gets his comeuppance. Today is the day he’s going to die. Kill the Beast are proud to present The Boy Who Kicked Pigs – their 5* adaptation of the darkly comic story by Dr Who’s Tom Baker. Promising beautiful projections, original music and over eight hats, it’s a gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel’s attempt at infamy. “Inventive, clever, gruesome and hilarious… a twisted triumph and an unmissable debut” ***** What’s On Stage “A truly brilliant example of a class act in action” ***** British Theatre Guide “A scorchingly talented company” **** Time Out Theatre Royal Margate Carmen Canterbury Festival Spiegeltent Albert Einstein: Junior Edition Cathedral Lodge Jan Piggott Spiegeltent Stephen Frost’s Improv Allstars Marlowe Theatre The Great Gatsby Theatre Royal Margate Carmen (MWO) Cathedral Lodge Conor Cunningham Spiegeltent Hey Harley WEDNESDAY 29TH OCTOBER Churchill Theatre Bromley Elio Pace performs the Billy Joel Songbook Leas Cliff Hall Folkestone The Levellers Orchard Theatre Dartford Stones In His Pocket Revelation St Marys Ashford Scuberts Quintet Sacconi Quartet + Mathew Sharp White Rock Theatre Hastings The Snow Queen Canterbury Festival St Gregory’s Univerity Chamber Choir Spiegeltent The Magical El Baldiniho Cathedral Lodge Jessica Fellowes Spiegeltent Hot Potato Syncopators Shirley Hall Freddy Kempf (piano) Marlowe Theatre The Great Gatsby

It has been a big year for King Size Slim (aka Toby Barelli). The last 12 months has seen the release of his first studio album (see “Milk Drunk” below), an incredibly busy gig diary (including 27 shows in just 31 days during August) and it’s now been capped off with a British Blues Award. Announced as winner of the inaugural Emerging Artist Award sponsored by Blues in Britain Magazine on the 24th August, King Size Slim was unable to make the awards ceremony at the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival in Colne, Lancashire. Instead he was playing a support show for The James Hunter Six in London – just another sign that he’s made the important transition from being “busy gigging” to “in demand”!
A talent out of the young and bold blues bag who can show those old delta boys a thing or two.
The award itself came after successful nomination to the list of finalists by a panel made up of members of the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association and then a public vote to select the winner, a format that isn’t glossed over by King Size Slim.
“To be nominated by people from within the genre and industry is great, real recognition of the work that’s gone in and of the broadcaster’s support for the album. To know that through the years of gigging (around 150 shows a year!), that I’ve built up a fan base that has supported me winning this award is fantastic. A big, big thanks to everyone who voted and to those involved in the Awards, it’s a great showcase for blues in this country.” Other 2014 highlights include collaborations with Steve Finnerty (Alabama 3), support slots for Son of Dave, Heritage Blues Orchestra, and Paul Lamb and the King Snakes, festival appearances at Love Supreme, Celebration Days (France), Gloucester Blues Festival plus a whole heap of radio play and media support across the UK and Europe! His debut studio album “Milk Drunk” was released late 2013 on TreeHouse44 and is available from iTunes as well as being distributed by Proper Music. ‘The Moments Since April 2012 ‘The Moments’ have been showcasing their blend of high energy “r n b” inspired songs from the golden era of music - the 60’s, with influences of early Rolling Stones, Kinks, Who, Small Faces, Animals, early Dr Feelgood – to name a few. In that short space of time Gigs in the whole of Kent have been building up - keeping this 4-piece (Johnny Gunn, Guitar & Vocals, Chris Rocket, Bass & Vocals, Tony Christopher ,Vocals, and Neil James Drums & Vocals)
busy – and now branching out to London in the very near future. Extensive experience of the music ‘business’ from the 60’s - from (Pirate) Radio London shows, from the Northern Club circuit, from Duos, Trios, 4, 5, 6 piece Bands to tours of the UK and Europe, writing, recording and releasing records (CBS) and exposure on radio & TV, the ‘Moments’ put everything together into a friendly ‘party’ time. Gigging throughout Kent over the next few months - go and see them at a venue near you soon!
Fan’s Fave
Things don’t get much more exquisite or harmonious than four liked-minded musicians, who share a mutual love of all things rock and grunge, producing intensely heartfelt music with passion and energy. Initially formed from the simmering ashes of other popular local bands Back 2 Back came together in January 2011 and ignited onto the pub music scene in South East Kent in May that year, where they have been a popular feature ever since. Founder member Nick Milton (Drums) says “I’d been looking for something fresh and exciting for some time and decided to start my own band. A lot of the bands I was
seeing in pubs were very similar in the sense of the songs they played. I wanted to do something a bit different. I wanted to bring back some of the grunge classics and mix it up with some modern day sing-along rock favourites. All I had to do was find other high calibre musicians, which was actually easier than I had imagined. The rest, as they say, is history.” They regularly change set lists but you can expect classic and popular songs by the likes of AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Offspring, Reef, Puddle of Mudd, Sum 41, Lenny Kravitz and more. Enjoying nothing more than sharing a love of rock & grunge music with a pub full of enthusiastic people back 2 Back would love to entertain you, so check out their upcoming gig dates and go party with them soon! Ones To Look Out For
Lofty Harris Lofty Harris are a four piece party band from Margate and Canterbury making a big impact on the Kent music scene - the Sky’s the limit! Booming out some unlikely chart tracks such as Tiny Tempa and Dizzy Rascal to some upbeat James Brown, Santana and then classic rock tracks from ZZ Top they really do play something for everyone. A tight and well-rehearsed party band, Lofty Harris have had a busy summer of private functions and corporate events and say that they provide ‘relaxed, light hearted, quality live entertainment’. Fronted by self proclaimed Val Kilmer look-a-like James Harris, Lofty Harris are bursting with confidence and ambition and are keen to make their mark on the Kent music scene over the forthcoming months. Their youtube channel has already gained media attention and the band has big plans for the forthcoming months with more studio time and filming already in their diary, not your usual pub band playing mustang sally or sex on fire but expect more like Peter Andre and Billy Ray Cyrus with some Ian Dury thrown in for good measure. Catch them at the Globe Hythe’s Live Music Venue on the 18th October, Further Gigs www.facebook.com/loftyharrisband The Leigh Highwood Band (LHB) is a Kent based ensemble. Not your average pub band, it features one of Kent’s finest guitarists, all-round musician and thoroughly nice chap - Mr Leigh Highwood (the clue was in the title!) When fully staffed the band goes out as a five-piece with Arkwright on rhythm guitar, Gareth on bass, the legendary Rick Kent on drums and recent addition to the fold, Paul on keyboards. The rest of the band have, much like their glorious leader, been playing so long that they have forgotten when they started. The type of music they play is difficult to sum up as they cover so many genres. “Versatile” you could say. You might hear a delicately played Motown ballad at one end of the spectrum, a blistering Led Zeppelin rock classic at the other (and then everything else in between!) Expect to hear some Tom Petty, The Who, maybe some Free or Bad Company, but you’ll hear some unexpected tracks too from their seemingly endless repertoire. They are always busy gigging all around Kent, so you should have no problem getting to see them at a pub near you. Now gigging..
The Pulsators The Pulsators are a Kent based Rockabilly band … the name might be new… but the pedigree of the band’s musicians goes way back.. Together, the Pulsators play a traditional brand of Rockabilly paying homage to the likes of Carl Perkins, Johnny Burnette and Eddie Cochran. Their foot tapping set also draws from other great artists like Billy Wallace, Pat Cupp, Johnny Powers and Glenn Glenn. The Pulsators began performing together in March 2014 and since then, their infectious up beat style has been well received at pubs and venues across the South East, and are fast becoming one of the, “must see” bands. The origins of the band come from Andy Seed and Chris Harrington who played together in the Sonics rockabilly band of the early 1980s. Then later, after playing for years together in the blues band 706 Union Avenue, the two decided they wanted to form a new band and play the music they most enjoy playing. The Pulsators.. The band really enjoy the music they play and it definitely comes across in their live performances. The energy and enjoyment soon becomes infectious, which is clear when the audience, unfamiliar to their style of rockabilly, get caught up in the music and atmosphere. In other words; they get rhythm….... Be-Bop-A-Lula !! Due to huge demand the band have booked most available dates for this year. So check out their facebook page, watch the videos online… Amd go catch ‘em soon…. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pulsators/
