Action Stations! originator Steve Burt said: “Our enthusiasts arrive from all over the world to fly with these legendary aircraft in memory of ‘the Few’. After his 50minute experience in the skies which including flying along the White Cliffs of Dover, Graeme Archer, was overjoyed. “It was bloody amazing. Sublime, one of the most beautiful things I have ever done. I took 500 pictures and could almost touch the Spitfire we were so close to her.” The next flights from Lydd Airport are due to take place from July 18 – July 20; then August 15 – 17; and September 13 – 15; and October 17 – 19. BROADSTAIRS FOLK WEEK The only event in the Top 21 Things Not To Be Missed 2013 Rough Guide to Kent, Surrey and Sussex– is Broadstairs Folk Week.
So, come and find out why! There’s 500 events in one week – over the lovely town of Broadstairs in venues ranging from a concert marquee for main headliners to intimate chats with musicians in the town’s Sailing Club. You can buy one ticket for your favourite band – (Capercaillie looks to be a sell-out before the festival even starts) – or you can go the whole hog and buy a Season Ticket with camping which means you can try and break the world record for number of events attended in one Folk Week. You can learn the ukulele, dance till the small hours with smash hits Coco and the Butterfields and listen to the accumulated wisdom of folk heroine Peggy Seeger. Offload your offspring and get them back having learned some Tiddly Folk singing, how to make a jig stick, construct a banner, bang a drum or even dance the Morris…there’s a full programme of events for kids – and a lot of it is free. If your life’s ambition is to learn a musical instrument – then Folk Week is the time to take the plunge – accordion, banjo, bhodran, concertina, fiddle, guitar, uke, harp, flute – top teachers from the folk world are in town… There’s a new campsite with great facilities – and everyone who stays there are either festival goers with Season Tickets, musicians, Morris dancers or volunteers who help run the festival. And talking of volunteers – Folk Week needs 200 to run the festival and there are still a couple of places left. If you are a friendly person who would like to enjoy Folk Week and earn your Season Ticket by working for 35 hours during the festival – give us a call or download the application from the website. It’s a great way to be at the heart of a brilliant event – and you get free camping too! There’s no room here to list the details of around 300 musicians who descend on Broadstairs during the week – but there is plenty of information on our website – and before the festival there will be a downloadable app too. Season Tickets are bookable on the website for the week, weekend or just a day. Individual tickets are available by calling 01843 604080 Broadstairs Folk Week 9-16 August 2013 www.broadstairsfolkweek.org.uk

DODGY TO HEADLINE CREATE FESTIVAL 2013 Major British pop rock band Dodgy has been announced as the headline act for the main stage of the free music festival on Sunday 28th July, making sure that crowds at Ashford’s 18th Create Music Festival will be staying out for the summer…. The band, best known for their hits Staying Out For The Summer and Good Enough, were one of the biggest acts of the UK’s Britpop scene in the 1990s, and have just release their first album in 15 year - to rave reviews. The news comes after it was revealed that the legendary Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess will open the festival with a oneoff show at St Mary’s Church on Friday 26th July, in a new addition to the line-up – the Friday Night Sound Check, supported by Right Track Music. Now in its 18th year, Create takes place in Ashford’s Victoria Park and is organised by Ashford Borough Council. With four stages of music, food stalls, a licensed bar and plenty of family friendly entertainment, the free one-day festival regularly attracts upwards of 12,000 music lovers throughout the day. There’s no need to book tickets for Create – just turn up and party!

ACTION-PACKED SUMMER KNIGHTS
Sir Henry VIII invites all to come and witness an International Jousting Tournament at historic Hever Castle on July 27th & 28th. The major spectacle comes to the former castle of kings for one weekend only following the annual tournaments held in July and August. It is a fitting climax to a summer of jousting and takes the competition to a whole new level of excitement, pitting England against France. The International Jousting Tournament will be fought over two days, testing the knights’ skills both in the saddle and on foot. Spectators will be treated to a thrilling display of action, stunts, falls and fights as the brave knights compete for points riding the quintain and spearing heads and lancing rings followed by foot combat with weapons of their choice, plus two knights riding against each other at full tilt armed only with a 4 metre lance and a shield.

Now there’s cider and there’s cider, and even ‘cyder’. (And perry, made from pears). Not knocking the apple-and pear-based beverages at supermarkets near you, but that is a different animal to true artisan cider, which is 100% fermented juice, pressed by hand (or many a Heath-Robinson inspired contraption), with little if anything added. Certainly no carbonated, sugary chemical solutions or citric acids here! For the festival, we the Brogdale barn is packed with up to 60 different varieties of artisan cider and perry, some other local cidermakers to help with tastings and demos, some great bands, a stack of straw bales, some fairy lights, lots of local food stalls (hog roasts, curries, bbq-ers to name a few) and fingers crossed dry weather – although most of the festival is under cover anyway. There’s a free shuttle bus to and from Faversham Train station, so no need to drive, but you can take containers home to imbibe at your leisure later! And if you can’t get to the festival, don’t fret – the shop is open 7 days a week, and you can come and watch when the cidermakers are pressing (as long as you don’t mind hearing the odd expletive). Hope to see you there! Brogdale Fruit Collection, Brogdale Road, Faversham ME13 8XZ - 24 -25 August

DOVER CASTLE KNIGHTS TOURNAMENT
Outside the Grand Hotel on The Leas, Folkestone on Bank Holiday Monday is a free annual classic car festival which attracts over 300 entrants, including a Continental contingent. Car rallies have been held at the Grand at least since 1896; the first everone marque car rally was held here in 1933 for Rileys (one of the Riley brothers lived locally); in 1964 there were more Rolls-Royces per head of population in Folkestone than any other town in the world, and in the 70s the rally became established as the Rolls-Royce Parade.
Marvel at the medieval knights as they take on the ultimate tournament. Fully armoured and ready to do battle, you can watch our knights in hand to hand combat, archery competitions and much more. Who will reign supreme and be the victor?

HAMISH STUART
Glasgow-born Hamish Stuart shot to fame in the 1970’s as the falsetto voice and guitarist of the Average White Band, his distinctive songwriting and vocal and guitar style helping pave the way to AWB’s extraordinary worldwide success. Hamish spent the rest of the 1980’s touring, writing and recording with a galaxy of soul legends, including Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and George Benson. Hamish joined Paul McCartney’s band (where he switched between guitar and bass as necessary with McCartney) for McCartney’s 1989 comeback album, Flowers in the Dirt, and appearing on several other albums and McCartney’s world tours of 1989 and 1993. Hamish continues to perform live with his band and is producing other acts, most recently Gordon Haskell and Swedish singer/songwriter Meja Beckman. He is a consummate performer and his shows continue to sellout and wow audiences wherever he plays.

NICKY MOORE’S BLUES CORPORATION
Nicky Moore makes a welcome return to the Stag with his acclaimed blues band. Classically trained, his voice spans three and a half octaves, and he can deliver spine-tingling ballads and hard-rocking numbers equally well, using his amazing voice to good effect. He is also a notable songwriter and arranger with many published songs to his credits. With the current lineup of son Timmy, whose gritty lead guitar is complimented by Danny Kyle’s lighter style, Eddie Collins’ superb drumming and Pete Shaw’s rock solid bass, this is without doubt one of the most charismatic blues bands around on the music scene today

FOLK IN KENT
Hello good folks of Kent. I hope that you have found some excellent spring/early summer music. I am amazed at how many towns now have their own style of music festival. The Folkestone SkaFest looks ridiculously amazing , and at the other end of the scale is the Sandwich Folk Festival. My personal highlights so far has been the Backyard Rhythm Orchestra – the most fun party band I have seen in a long time. For beautiful listening the current front-runners are Susie Ro and Ayla, for stop you in your tracks listening. Check them out for an incredible mix of traditional and “nu-folk”. The box office has finally opened at Broadstairs Folk Week, and the ticklts are flying out of the office – always a sign that there is no turning back now (as if we would!). I will now let you into a little secret about the Deal Real ale Festival, taking place at the Astor Theatre on 17th August. I have been privileged to be asked to organise the day’s musical line-up. It has a strong Kentish feel , but with a couple of “outsiders” chosen for their originality. I’m happy to say that the line-up so far includes the amazing Sally Ironmonger (Medway), Andrea Soler (Australia), Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin (Devon/ Lancs), Gentlemen of Few (Folkestone) and the Bubbleband (Planet Thanet). Hope to see you all at the Astor to enjoy some great beer and music, and to support this lovely community theatre.

THOUSANDS ARMY Thousands Army - now how do I describe
these guys? Three dudes, a guitar, violin and a mandolin. Yes seriously and this should not technically speaking work. At the very start the violin just filled the room, soaring around the venue, filling every single space between the audience and into all corners with no place to hide. On occasion it sounds haunting but at all times enchanting and all encompassing. Bring in the mandolin, occasionally this seemed to get lost in the music, drowned out by the other instruments. Just as you think this, the most amazing sound floats over the top, overpowering every other sound you can hear, bringing a strange Medieval/Celtic instrumental that just makes your jaw drop. Lastly the guitar, combined with vocals and you have a Rock/Country/ Folk mix thrown into the equation. Individually this sounds like it doesn’t work. Technically speaking we now have a Rock/Country/ Medieval/Folk/Celtic does Classical, eclectic mix and that does not sound right! Wrong! They describe themselves as Folk/Rock and there is definitely a rock element thrown into this at all times. Stuarts voice actually sounds like its running on a very low percentage and I suspect this guy can really belt a tune if he tries. The set takes you on a roller coaster of soft, gentle, melodic to upbeat, rocky edged music with clean, crisp and at times gravelly vocals. Each instrument brings something entirely different to the table and mix them up together, give them a shake and what comes out the other side, pure genius. A sound so unique it simply cannot be described, so at this point I shall stop all attempts and simply say… go and see them… don’t think about it, DO IT! I promise you won’t regret it.
SIRENS & SHELTER Acoustic/Folk/Pop Singer & Songwriter from North Kent with a bit of a difference. I recently saw Scott at a gig in Ashford at The Windmill Inn. Scott Mallard plays an entirely acoustic set but with a sound that at times, is as full and loud as a band. The songs could easily be produced with a full band but equally work just as well in acoustic form. Such is the fullness you would be forgiven for thinking that it is not merely Scott and a guitar standing on stage. I found his style extremely passionate and energetic, not always what you expect from an acoustic act. The lyrics to his songs are heartfelt and emotional, feeling like they are being sung from deep down within his soul. This is extremely endearing and alluring. His voice has a raw and rough sort of edge to it, which sounds vulnerable and pure at times in its presentation. Scott has just recorded a new EP which is in its mastering stage at the moment, I for one will be really keen to give this a listen. His current EP and the material performed on stage has some contrast to it, but that unique voice is very evident throughout. I highly recommend you get along to see him perform, it’s an acoustic act that blends well in style with a band night or an acoustic night. That’s not something you hear or see very often.

ASHES Ashes – well I’d heard their
EP streamed before the gig but not seen them live. I’ll get this out there right now, in the open, done and dusted! What I said to the band at the end of the gig was: ”Wow that was awesome, I think you sound better live than recorded!”. Now that most certainly does not mean that they don’t sound good recorded by any stretch of the imagination… just live, they sounded even better. I’ve deliberated many times over their sound, both during the gig and after and I’m still not there. That maybe part of the attraction actually. Truth told, as I’m writing this I’m listening to the EP and I’m still slightly scratching my head, but in such a good way! Steve Hertz voice… that’s where the conundrum comes from. I’d say it has a real old school kind of sound to it if I’m honest. Put that with chugging and choppy riffs, stripped back bass that then roars out at you making the air around you pulsate, melodic yet crisp guitar and energetic, hypnotic drums give this band an overall awesome sound. Check them out!
CRASHGATE Crashgate are an established rock band from Deal. The
band was the brainchild of Craig Sheridan wanting to try a different angle on his music after writing an acoustic track back in 2010. This was done with Lee Morrison and other members in the “Craig Sheridan band “ and became Crashgates first powerful rock track after a successful tour to Wales. The original band members were, Lee Morrison , James Yore , Alan Worboys , Richard Keeler and of course Craig Sheridan. I’d heard the recently released debut album from the comfort of my own home but there is nothing like seeing material like this live, the way it’s meant to be in my opinion! Clever lyrics, some great blood curdling ‘screaming’ bringing in a slightly metal element and the clear and extremely tuneful vocals of Craig, make this a band more than pleasurable to watch and listen to. Interaction with the audience makes the band even more alluring, drawing them in and making them step forward. They gained new fans at this gig. Get along and see them very soon!
HIGH TIDE High Tide - I covered their EP
launch gig at the Marlowe Theatre in April and they were staggering. It was therefore with a little trepidation that I stood to watch them on this evening. Why, because they were so amazing last time I saw them , I was worried I would be disappointed seeing them perform at a low key gig. Now honestly, yes they were different this time and no I didn’t enjoy it quite as much BUT... The set was more laid back, the covers not as unique (although Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was still awesome!) and there was a reason for this. A different audience, a different crowd and a different ambience to the evening. This crowd was not pumped up, here to watch a lively upbeat frenetic show. The fact that High Tide can switch it around like this and adapt, shows a lot of skill and potential. Yes the set had a more relaxed feel to it but the energy itself that drives them is still apparent and in abundance. My only disappointment was the shortage of original material BUT (again) I completely understand why this was. They have a unique and lively brand of acoustic which is very entertaining to watch and extremely pleasurable on the ears. Do so! This pages reviews and photography by Sarah Quinn - GIGgle Pics

The Priory was re-invented a few years ago as one of the South East’s most venerated live music venues… and the reason for this?... the unique band list that this pub is becoming renowned for. As well as China Crisis’s Colin Hinds, who performs every week, other well known UK and International bands stop off to play here on the way to, or from their continental gigs. Artists such as Chris Mayfield’s Rhythm Rats, Slovakian Ska/Punk favourites Elvis Jackson and the UK’s Blue Bishops and Little Devils blues band are just a few. Even Californian band OPM stopped off here for a gig at the end of their European tour in June! The priory offers a stopping off point for travelling troubadours, most of these bands are booked at the last minute, so to make sure you don’t miss out, check facebook or W3 local gig guide. Popular Kent fine bands and musicians are also championed, Find all this great music..…only at the Priory. Station Approach, Dover. 01304 242344
