Food & Drink The Stile Bridge, A Country Pub …& More.. Nestled into the Kent countryside , you would never know from the outside what treats lay inside the Stile Bridge. Described by some as a turbocharged beer house, the bar boasts an almost overwhelming array of around 70 beers and ciders both in bottles and on tap. Added to this is the fantastic British Country Bistro inspired menu, with dishes all freshly prepared in house. Once you also take into account the Live Music held in the bar every Friday and the rolling schedule of Folk, Blues and Comedy nights, it is no wonder the Stile Bridge is such a hit with its regulars and was voted the CAMRA Maidstone & Midkent Pub of the Year. The Stile Bridge, Staplehurst Road, Marden TN12 9BH 01622 831236

The Deal Hoy is for you The Deal Hoy is a community based pub with a warm friendly atmosphere. It’s location in the North end of the historic town of Deal is reflected in the nautical artefacts that adorn the walls and even the ceiling. The landlord is a local man with a nautical past who still has boats on the beach and is passionate about local history and good beer. Every Wednesday and Friday evening the pub hosts the Burger Brothers pop up burger bar – they produce what has been described by some as the best burgers in Kent. Families and children are welcome. Live music is on every Wednesday and will move into the extensive beer garden on weekends as soon as the summer arrives. We also showcase local artists and are happy to accommodate clubs and societies. Duke street, Deal, Kent. 01304 363972

Food & Drink The Cock Inn Boughton Monchelsea The Cock Inn Boughton Monchelsea is a picture postcard Elizabethan Inn. With oak beams, inglenooks and wonky floors this is your quintessential English pub dating back to at least 1568. The pub specialises in local produce cooked simply but with a twist on the traditional. The Sunday Roasts are legendary, and the menu also boasts a large fresh fish menu featuring, as an example, whole crab, sea bass, sardines, Colchester black river oysters, smoked salmon and mussels… and is that’s not enough to tempt you, there’s a substantial specials board which changes daily. Homemade desserts and a cheese board round off the choices on offer. The dishes are all cooked to order by Chefs Marc Wilson and Smail Afafsa who have worked as a team at the Restaurant for a number of years, Smail coming up to his 10th year at the pub. Dave the landlord is fanatical about Real Ales and has been featured in the CAMRA good beer guide for almost 30 years. With at least 3 ales on draught, there’s always a seasonal or speciality ale on tap, along with a good selection of lagers, ciders, an extensive wine list including Champagne… and landlady Jo is partial to a sip of fizz!! This is a great destination pub with a big character, drop in and give it a try. Heath Road, Boughton Monchelsea, Maidstone, ME17 4JD 01622 743166

FRIDAY 5TH APRIL Join comedian, writer, broadcaster and all-round British institution ARTHUR SMITH and bask in an evening of laughter and off the wall humour with one of the ‘alternative comedians’ who shook up the world of light entertainment in the eighties and nineties. Expect an evening of sublime playfulness, crammed with jokes, anecdotes, short stories, poems, songs and readings from his recently published memoir ‘My Name Is Daphne Fairfax’ which has won praise from literary critics. LEAS CLIFF HALL FOLKESTONE The Hairy Bikers: Larger Than Live SAT 16TH MARCH It’s now been over two years since we did our last stage tour, a complete sell-out and one of the best times of our lives. It’s for those reasons that we can’t wait to do it all over again; only this time it’s going to be bigger, bolder, funnier, and packed with more food and laughs than ever before. We like to do things a little differently to most, which is why we’re not just giving you a show, we’re giving you a real night out. There will be some cooking, a sprinkling of special guests* you all know and love, and a chance for some of our lucky audience members to enjoy a slap up meal on stage courtesy of the (Hairy) chefs. Last time round we told you our story, but this time, we’re taking you round the world. Starting with our northern roots, we’ll share our rip roaring tales of decadent do’s, big dinners and culinary catastrophes. There will be a bit of dancing, a bit of flirting, a bit of singing, and some downright hilarious stand-up comedy. Filled with plenty of surprises, expect the unexpected… and if you like us on the telly, you will love us Larger than Live.

Jethro FRI 22ND MARCH It’s laughter all the way. Cornwall’s ambassador of comedy will once again take you on a fun and wild journey, in only a way that he can! Be sure to hold onto your seats, hats and horses as you are entertained by one of the funniest storytellers to date. Contains adult material.

Desolation, among others, these three Watford sisters are in real demand at present, and their schedule’s only got busier since their debut album ‘Born And Grown’ was released in October. Produced by the legendary Glyn and Ethan Johns (whose combined credits include the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Ray LaMontagne, and Laura Marling to name but a few), The Staves’ album is a brilliant showcase of their talents. THE QUARTERHOUSE, FOLKESTONE Alistair McGowan - Not Just A Pretty Voice FRIDAY 5TH APRIL The Nation’s favourite impressionist, Alistair McGowan, goes back to his stand-up roots for a new two-hour show. Expect to hear everyone from Andy Murray to Colin Murray, riffs on everything from Jeff Stelling to bad spelling and at least one song about butter. Warning: May contain puns!

HighTide Festival Theatre presents Bottleneck FRIDAY 26TH APRIL Am I a virgin? I think I am. I mean it went in her but it was floppy and it wasn’t very nice so I think I’m a virgin. FOLK IN KENT That should be it for you, good folk of Kent. No more snow; slipping underfoot and no more paying Npower the equivalent of the GDP of a small Country every month or is that a (gas) pipe dream? Down here in deepest darkest Thanet, we have been treated to a great winter of music. Steve Tilston at Margate’s Tom Thumb Theatre got rave reviews, and glancing at their future line-up, Tom McConville – 1st March, Rob Johnson giving us all much needed advice on dealing with the political and social chaos – 5th April, Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin won’t fail to amaze on 3rd May. The pub music scene in Thanet is strong at the moment. The Wrotham Arms is a pillar of blues strength. The Tartar Frigate’s Wednesday Folk session is a mainstay of the music community. My own gigs in The Little Albion and The Red Lion, St Peter’s, have been very well attended. I believe the trick is getting a few established artists – Ben Paley, Brendan Power, Jed Grimes, in the mix with quality newbies – Galley Beggar, Brides of Rain, and Larkspur, resulting in a healthy audience. One of my favourites was a gentleman called The Little Unsaid. I have never seen such a full pub with so many jaws dropped. Please check him out in The Little Albion on 12th May and/or at Broadstairs Folk Week. Talking about Broadstairs Folk Week, I am already excited about the line-up. The opening night in the Pavilion is the talented, innovative Bubbleband, accompanied by Beggar’s Belief. Coco and the Butterfields will be performing at the Sunday fancy dress night. After seeing Duncan Disorderly and his Scalleywags at many larger festivals, I cannot wait to be bouncing and smiling for two hours during his set on the ‘late night’. Oh, and that’s on top of a few lesser known artists such as Capercaille, Larkin Poe and Dervish. Wow. My Spring will be finally sprung on the May Bank Holiday when I’ll be found running between the local pub gigs at the marvelous Rochester Sweeps Festival. Cheers Doug, I’ll need to get into practice before the summer festivals. Before I bore you all with further excitable ramblings, I will let you true Folkies into a hidden Kentish Secret. There exists a tiny festival called ‘The Pigs Ear Folk Ale’ in a picturesque pub garden tucked away in West Kent. This is my folk retreat and I would be lost without it. Thanks Sue and the team for this treasure. Happy Spring, people.

PROFESSIONAL RECORDING STUDIOS…. AND MORE…. KETV Studios is a professional film and sound production company based in Dover, Kent, offering a wide range of specialist visual and audio services. The Studio was established in Dover in 1968 and was originally an early government initiative in the use of television in schools. Over the years the facility has dramatically evolved to make sure that clients have access to top end equipment. The studio benefits from having a complete Pro Tools HD audio setup, including a D-command mixing desk. This coupled with a wide range of respected high-end microphones, allows you to create a unique and bespoke recording.

W3_BG_MAR13.indd 40

The studio also boasts a spacious rehearsal and recording area; bands can happily rehearse without worrying about any restrictions or noise complaints – you can crank your amp right up to eleven in here. The performer’s needs are really met through the multiple recording options that are on offer; from live recording to professional multi-tracking and mastering. And if you want your audio project to be expertly polished, you can take advantage of the acoustically isolated live room for specialised vocal and instrument recordings. Video production stills plays a pivotal role at the studios and they can produce a variety of cost-effective visual solutions for your business, establishment or event. Whether your project requires a single or multi-camera shoot they can provide you with a video strategy to suit your budget. Musicians and Bands can also benefit from the in-house green screen, which provides low-cost and highly creative music videos. Large and small scale CD/DVD duplication and custom printing is also at hand. With in-house technical facilities, large studio space and unparalleled support, KETV Studios can offer a variety of production packages to suit all briefs and budgets.
