What The Dickens? Rochester Dickens Festival Fri 30th May to Sun 1st June Welcome to a weekend of colourful celebration, enlightening entertainment and Dickensian discovery, as we honour one of England’s greatest writers. Charles Dickens lived in Medway for almost 20 years, absorbing the area’s architecture, character and colour and bringing it to fictional life in some of his best-known works. For over three decades we have celebrated our proud association with Dickens and this year we are delighted to present a family festival packed with Dickensian delight and Victorian intrigue. Whether this is your first Rochester Dickens Festival or you’re a regular, get ready for a feast for the senses. From costumed parades and street acts to competitions, readings and a fair, Rochester’s streets and green spaces will be awash with entertainment.
And 2 weeks later….

Broadstairs Dickens Festival Sat 14th June to Fri 20th June Charles Dickens visited Broadstairs in Kent regularly from 1837 until 1859 and immortalised the town as “Our English Watering Place”. In 1937, to commemorate the centenary of the author’s first visit, Gladys Waterer, the then resident of Dickens House, conceived the idea of putting on a production of David Copperfield and of having people about the town in Victorian dress to publicise it. Thus the Broadstairs Dickens Festival was born and, with the exception of the years of World War 2, has been held annually in the third week of June ever since. Now in its 77th year follow in Charles Dickens’ footsteps by coming to Broadstairs. Savour the delights of the town which he named “Our English Watering Place”. Events include bazaar, talks, demonstrations, re-enactments, competitions and opening parade on Saturday 14 June from 2.30pm starting from Pierremont Hall to Victoria Garden. Vin Garbutt Brook Theatre, Chatham Thursday 15th May Powerful, moving, warm, humane, inspired, funny and gut wrenchingly honest are just some of the superlatives used to describe Vin’s performance. Winner of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Live Act 2001.
Ezra Furman & special guests Revelation St Mary’s, Ashford Wednesday 21st May Fresh from his sell out UK tour in February, we are pleased to welcome Ezra Furman to Revelation St Mary’s, Ashford! For fans of Jonathan Richman, the White Stripes and The Fall this show is a must! Stylish, techni-colour, pulse-quickening rock provocateur album Day of the Dog was recorded with Ezra’s new touring band, The Boy-Friends, who have helped to bring the songs alive in the studio and on stage. Throughout the album, Ezra’s bold artistry and giant ambitions reflect on songwriting traditions of the past, however it is altogether skewed by an undercurrent of off beat and ragged glory, the kind you find in the conflicts of the soul! “a genre classic … Ezra Furman has made an album of classicist rock’n’roll that never feels like an exercise, but a living, breathing piece of selfexpression.” – THE GUARDIAN 5* review

Mitch Benn is the 37th Beatle Hazlitt Theatre, Maidstone Friday 23rd May Mitch’s new show combines his Scouse upbringing with his love of music and a lifelong obsession with Liverpool’s most famous sons. It is most definitely not a tribute show and while his affection for his subjects is well documented, expect the satirical twists for which Mitch is well known. As Mitch himself says: “Many have claimed the title “Fifth Beatle”. They can’t all be right; some were righter than others..

DICK BARTON - SPECIAL AGENT Astor Theatre, Deal Friday 30th May This is the zany spoof of the classic BBC 1940s detective series “Dick Barton - Special Agent” installment one. Phil Willmott’s award-winning script is presented radio style by this all-singing, all-dancing team of actor-musicians known as Kaos Kabaret, who are experienced entertainers in their own right. You will laugh your head off at their antics Dick Barton was a phenomenally popular radio hero in post-war Britain. Probably only Paul Temple and The Goons rivalled his fame. Barton is obviously inspired by the Bulldog Drummond style heroes of the 1930s, a strong silent type who is at a loose end after the war but revels in grappling with mad scientists, secret weapons and mysterious assassins. Now you can see what happens when a group of 1940s actors turn up to record the programme, only to find they’ll be providing all the sound and special effects themselves

ALBERT LEE
Albert Lee makes a welcome return to the Astor Theatre in Deal on the 6th June. Albert Lee, by common consent one of the world’s finest guitarplayers, needs no introduction to Country Music & Rock fans. He has worked with some of the world’s top artists, from Emmylou Harris to the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton to Eric Clapton. In November 2002, at Eric’s request, Albert appeared at the star-studded Memorial Concert for George Harrison at London’s Albert Hall, and was featured alongside Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill and Eric Clapton at Eric’s 2007, 2010 and 2013 Crossroads guitar festivals. He is also a member of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, and fronted the band at the O2 arena on the night of the Led Zeppelin reunion concert. Albert is a double Grammy award winning musician, whose talents continue to be in demand by fellow performers the world throughout. The Astor is also to host loads more top artists including Toyah Wilcox and the superb Letz Zep. www.theastor.org

NEWS Great news, again, for local musicians in the 2014 British Blues Awards. It could be a bumper year for Kent - Broadstairs Blues Bash created & promoted by Nigel Feist, has been nominated in the Blues Festival Category, while David Migden of the Dirty Words & Twisted Roots fame has been nominated in the male vocalist category (see our profile a couple of pages in). Other bands/artists who are regular visitors to Kent venues are also up for nominations, these include, King Size Slim in the emerging artist category, Babjack in the acoustic act category, Jo Harman, Steve Watts from the Jo Harman band, Trevor Steger & Becky Tate from Babjack and Yoka Qureshi Kuiper from the Little Devils. Earls in Maidstone hosts another One Live Weekend Event on the May Bank Holiday weekend 24th - 26th May. Kellys Heros, Mofos, Vince Vortex, Timmy Moore & Spitroast are just a few of the top bands playing, but one we have to mention is new band the Bad Pandas… one act who apparently after playing eats shoots and leaves !! Who remembers Rubber Biscuit? Well they’ll be “bouncing” back to appear at the Theatre In The Park (Strode Park Foundation) Herne Bay later this summer, but in the meantime, folk stalwarts, The Oysterband make a welcome return to the Theatre’s Stage on the 4th July

Bare-faced Blues
News from afar….Hot on the heels of the news that Hastings is to have its own Folk Festival in May 2014, comes the launch of a new Blues Festival in St Leonards. To be called ‘Bare-Faced Blues’, the festival is being organised and promoted by local man Barry Taylor. For the uninitiated, Barry is the man who booked the Sex Pistols to play on Hastings Pier back in July 1976 !! Local acts already lined up include Buick 6, King Size Slim, Goo Goos and T Chest Blues, with more to be announced. Barry would like to hear from any local Blues based acts who are interested in playing this charity event. You can contact him via email at: barry.taylor145@gmail. com
Beat a route to this..
And even farther afar….At the time of going to press, Maidstone’s Ben Jones’s new outfit Beat Root, are still wowing the good folks in the USA with their tour, if their facebook messages are anything to go by. The newly formed band of folk, roots, howling blues & classic pop beats band, feature the songwriting prowess of Andrea Magee & guitarist Ben Jones, and when they’re finally back in Blighty, make sure you go and see them… or book ‘em if you’re a venue. For more info go to www.beatroottheband.com Unfortunately we here at W3 are not masters of the psychic !..... if you have some, band, artist, venue or event news, send them in to us… we’d love to hear from you, and we really would like to share the news with others. Contact us via Facebook: w3 gigs or w3@whatson.plus.com.... But definitely not a Ouija board!!

…And Finally… How’s this for a gig…..In April, The Goosebumps Band had to travel a little bit further than normal to get to their gig. It was actually over 5000 miles!! They were flown out to The Seychelles to play at a private event!! The adventure consisted of a delayed departure resulting in missing a connecting flight, staying up all night in Dubai airport, two instruments being lost by baggage handlers in Paris and one lost iPhone. Fortunately, everything worked out in the end, they made it in time for the gig … and all the lost items turned up…. Phew!

Ones To Look Out For
Richard Navarro Richard Navarro cut his teeth performing with just a violin and loop station on street corners in his home town of Canterbury. His witty, observational songwriting soon attracted the attention of the passing crowds, and chance meetings with likeminded musicians resulted in his own live band. Richard is a singer and songwriter using piano, violin, trumpet and percussion with live looping, backed up by Nicholas Thurston on double bass, to perform his original songs and unique arrangements of wellknown material.
Now, Richard’s live show mixes his effortlessly beautiful vocal with a genius weaving of violin, trumpet and piano into tightly composed character pieces. Using the latest technology, he collaborates with VJ artists Butch Auntie to weave live visuals and improvisation into his unique, spellbinding performances. With his 2014 concerts including the Marlowe Studio, Pizza Express The Pheasantry and various UK festivals and gigs at local venues, this is the chance to see Richard perform. A Singer, songwriter and producer performing solo and with band see www. richardnavarro.co.uk for gigs, tracks and memorabilia

The Narratones The Narratones started out in 2013 with shared dreams and different stories to tell. 4 mates from different towns make the music happen. They started at home with 2 guitars and songs about gone-to-pot love lives. Turning up at The Walnut Tree on jam night, the regulars listened and took a shine from the start. Matt and Darren became the rhythm section and it started sounding alright. The first gig was good, followed by a festival where 2,000 people showed their love. Later that year, The Narratones played Liverpool’s Lomax – which was home to many a band such as Oasis, The Stereophonics and many others.

We Ghosts
WE GHOSTS are often described as “Anglo-Swedish Acoustica”. They blend elements of pop, jazz, blues and folk in a refreshing and original way. Fronted by the song writing team of Swedish singing marvel J.J.Woodall and English instrumentalist John Christopher. They make for a splendid live show worthy of any stage and their atmospheric, eerie and inventive recordings have been used in soundtracks as well having received frequent airplay and critical acclaim. Jenny Woodall’s crystal clear, stunningly delivered vocal, with its four octave range, has always been one of We Ghosts most compelling elements John Christopher has played music professionally since he left school. John is proficient on a number of instruments but it is his remarkable guitar work which has become part of the band’s signature sound, fusing elements of jazz, pop, folk and rock in a truly original way. He also sings harmonies with Jen and takes the lead vocal on a number of songs. As a guitarist his influences include Nick Drake, Django Reinhardt and Ry Cooder
