It’s Season…. Oh yes it is…..

2012 will be an important year for Pantoland as it marks 200 years since the publication of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale, Kinderund Hausmärchen, which included the story of Aschenputtel. We know her today as Cinderella. Cinderella along with Aladdin may be one of the most produced pantomimes in Britain each year, but there are still a number of venues in which lesser known Pantos can be seen. Will Jack save his mother from a life of poverty, escape the clutches of the giant and live happily ever after? First choreographed by Marius Petipa, The Pharaoh’s Daughter premiered in 1862 in a grandiose show -the likes of which had never seen before- at Petersburg’s Bolshoi Theatre. Immensely popular with the public, The Pharaoh’s Daughter was given several revivals. In 1864, the ballet was transferred from Petersburg to Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. But in Soviet times it was considered to be ideologically immature and, dropped from the repertoire, it was virtually forgotten. In 2000, Pierre Lacotte was exclusively commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre to resurrect Petipa’s mighty Egyptian fresco and he successfully succeded in giving a new life to this forgotten masterpiece. Folkestone Lions Club The Boxing Day Dip.. For one hour, every year on Boxing Day, hundreds of normally sensible members of the community go totally insane and run into the sea, regardless of how cold it is, and some of them even dress up for the occasion. The method behind their madness, though, is the raising of thousands of pounds for local or national charities. The “dippers”, as they’re known, get people to sponsor their lemming-like dash into the sea and the Folkestone Lions pass the monies raised onto the charities nominated by the dippers themselves and other local worthy causes. Each of the dippers gets a “hot toddy” and a commemorative medal to remind them of the occasion - as if the frost-bite and hypothermia weren’t enough already.... The “nominated charity” could be their own club, school or community group so this is a great way for local organisations to raise their own funds without having to stage an event themselves. Those that want to can dress up and enter the fancy dress competition that takes place for individual dippers or those taking part as a group. A range of other prizes is awarded as well, especially for the dipper raising the most money!!! For the rest of us, it is a great way to recover from the Christmas excesses with a gentle stroll down to the Sunny Sands beach, where you can watch the free spectacle of others getting a soaking in the name of their good causes. Mind you, it’s a great laugh for all concerned as well as the spectators.

Up-coming guest lists at Kent folk venues contain some interesting and very varied names including Mike Wilson & Damien Barber who will be at the Tom Thumb theatre, Margate, on 2nd November, two of the finest exponents of traditional song in the UK. They are followed on 8th by The Wheel of the Year when TraditionAll present a roistering, rollicking folkrock ride filled with music, songs, verse and essential exhilaration. On 9th November The Urban Folk Quartet grace the stage at the Kingston Barn; four accomplished musicians, a dozen instruments and four voices coming together to craft a knockout show of globally influenced, electrifying, acoustic music. Sheppey Folk & Blues Club veer toward the more unusual by hosting Armer & Beckett on 12thNovember This duo present a blend of rock and blues roots music, mixing original songs and covers on 12th while the Brook Theatre in Chatham has The Lock-In featuring The Demon Barbers on 19thNovember Best Live Act at Radio 2 Folk Awards 2009, this is the UK’s No.1 folk and hip-hop dance extravaganza. The Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks present Ralph McTell on the 14th November and the following night, 15th, Show Of Hands make a welcome visit to the Orchard Theatre in Dartford Dartford Folk Club have the intriguing pairing of Anthony John Clarke & Dave Pegg (of Fairport Convention) on 20th November which promises to be an unusual evening of music and mirth and the lovely Beth Orton appears at St. Mary’s Church, Ashford, on 29th November with her superb voice and blend of folk and electronica. Beth is a BRIT Award-winner. Another award-winning act, Tim Edey & Brendan Power, play with jaw-dropping virtuosity at St Mary’s Arts Centre, Sandwich on 1st December, a duo of dates from the Faversham Folk Club listing: Maggie Boyle & Paul Downes play on 14th November followed by Fake Thackray on 28th when John Watterson presents a faithful and affectionate tribute to the great man himself. John will be supporting Fairport Convention in their winter tour and The Albion Christmas Band appear at the Quarterhouse in Folkestone on 15th December. The Alex Beharrell Band by James Vince The band is fronted by Alex Beharrell (acoustic guitar, lead vocals) who cut his teeth in the local music scene from a young age as a singer/songwriter, Chris Rouse (electric guitar), Phil Hodge (bass) and Daniel Biggs (drums). So ladies and gentleman, let me know introduce you to The Alex Beharrell Band, your new favourite band. The band was formed in 2010 and they hail from the Tunbridge Wells/ Hastings area. They perform a wide range of styles and cater to a wide range of audiences. Their music, most of which is upbeat in nature can be likened to sitting in a deck chair in the sun with a nice glass of something cold. These guys are true professionals and seem to be a musical powerhouse when they perform live. Their songs, some of which are pretty darn catchy will find their way into your subconscious and you’ll be humming them for days. The Grandads It’s fair to say that The fabulous Grandads have been around the block a few times. With a combined total of 120 years on the professional ‘Showbiz’ circuit they’ve certainly earned their Stripes. Now they’re raising eyebrows on the Party and Pub-Rock scene, finally playing the music they love at smaller, intimate venues. In their first year since returning from retirement, their powerful, professional performances and eclectic mix of rock have earned them a loyal following of live music lovers of all ages. A spectacular lighting show and a sound quality that few bands can match completes the full entertainment package.
