at the Canterbury Festival Canterbury Festival’s newest venue, the Festival Spiegeltent, will be hosting a variety of gigs throughout the two weeks as it becomes the new home for the Festival Club. For folk fans, Canterbury’s newest star, Luke Jackson, is taking the folk world by storm and will be playing a special Sunday Brunch concert on home turf in the Speigeltent. In the evenings, there is an abundance of choice from top acts like Lunasa and Craobh Rua to a younger folk four-piece in Ahab, all of which will get you up and dancing the night away. If Americana is more your cup of tea, Norfolk-based band Feral Mouth intertwine guitar, cello, banjo, mandolin, upright bass and skiffle drums alongside soulful harmonies to create an authentic homage to roots country music. Chris Jagger’s Atcha will be playing the opening night of the Spiegeltent with their own unique style of Cajun/Zydeco fusion whilst Flaky Jake & Friends will be playing nearly every instrument under the sun including a guacharaca in a Caribbean and New Orleans flavoured evening. The last two Saturday nights of the Festival will see a special late night opening of the Spiegeltent with DJs The Boot Club providing a mix of Funk, Soul, Ska, Rock and Reggae for some serious dancing. The last Friday of the Festival then sees local talent Coco & the Butterfields playing the late night slot with their own brand of Folk, Pop and Hip-Hop. And finally, if you don’t want to go to the Spiegeltent at all (although why not!?), fantastic folk legends Oysterband will be playing at the Marlowe Theatre on the opening Sunday.

TENTERDEN FOLK FESTIVAL FOUR DAYS OF FOLK SONG, MUSIC AND DANCE

Events at the festival include an English Barn Dance, concerts, sing-a-rounds, music sessions, folk clubs, special shows, a craft fair and street stalls, music stalls, dance displays, procession, showcases, meet the guest spots, workshops, dancers and musicians on the K&ES Railway, events for children and much more besides Tenterden is “the Jewel of the Weald” and over the Festival weekend it has even more colour and sparkle than usual as hundreds of Morris men and women and other folk dancers take to the streets of the town centre. The majority of teams are Morris dance sides of varying styles, from the Cotswold tradition and Black-faced Border style, to clog to garland dancers. The teams you will see will be both men’s, women’s and mixed sides and come from all over England. It’s not just Morris you will see as Tenterden is regularly host to teams performing traditional dances from Scotland, Ireland, England, Slovakia and the Appalachian Mountains of North America. There is also Saturday’s popular procession along the High Street. TFF is a charity formed to preserve and advance public education and appreciation of folk music, song and dance as part of the living heritage. Therefore we offer you a chance to “Meet” some of the guests in informal sessions. We also offer workshops where you can hear about folk related topics or improve your own skills. Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 October

CANTERBURY FESTIVAL 06

2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Canterbury Festival and will see over 200 events take place across two weeks, including a fantastic selection of live music, hilarious comedians and unique theatrical performances such as Casus’ Knee Deep, a spectacular circus show from Australia fresh from a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This year will also see the Festival bring a Spiegeltent, a 1920s travelling dance hall, to Canterbury for the two weeks. This unique venue is perfect for our broad range of world music events including The FB Pocket Orchestra, an ensemble playing hot jazz, blues and ragtime music from the era of the Spiegeltent’s heyday. Its music offerings will range from young folk and country talent like ahab who indulge in four part harmonies, to established musicians like jazz saxophonist Sammy Rimington and inventive Celtic kings Lúnasa, there really will be something for every taste. A new feature for this year’s Festival is their late night events; a chance for Canterbury to revel into the small hours! Kent band CoCo and the Butterfields take to the stage with their rousing ‘fip fok’ – a term they coined to encompass their folk, pop and hip hop influences. DJs The Boot Club will also take over the Spiegeltent for two nights, delighting dancers with their eclectic musical offerings. 2013’s theatre and cabaret events also find a new home in the Spiegeltent, with Lili La Scala bringing two beguiling evenings of entertainment both as a vintage-style solo songstress and as part of her very own variety show, replete with singers, burlesque and variety acts and some comedy thrown in to boot. If you’re looking for some slightly more surreal entertainment, then the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre are the act for you, making their Canterbury debut after years of selling out at the Edinburgh Fringe – a highly anticipated evening indeed! Comedy offerings also feature in the wonderful Spiegeltent, including the highly acclaimed Boy With Tape on His Face, with his More Tape Tour which is due to sell out much like his 2011 Festival appearance, proving that you don’t need to speak to be funny. Comedic ventriloquist Nina Conti is due in Canterbury for two nights to regale her audiences between herself and her puppet guests about all things life, love and existence. After his household fame after his TV show The Last Leg during the Paralympics last summer, Adam Hills comes to Canterbury for an evening, regaling his audience with his Australian witticisms and observations in his latest tour show, Happyisms. The Festival is also playing host to some thrilling one-man theatre shows, with three different shows on three consecutive nights at the King’s School’s Studio Theatre. Brother Wolf is returning after their phenomenal performance of Fagin’s Last Hour last year to present their new show, A Christmas Carol, as told by Jacob Marley (deceased), followed by thriller Bloodshot and the critically acclaimed Oliver Reed: Wild Thing. Finally, this year also sees the Festival’s biggest-yet offering of family-friendly shows throughout the second week of the Festival, taking place daily at 2pm at the Spiegeltent. Kicking off is children’s script writer Andrew Barnett Jones with The Story Game, creating entirely new stories thanks to his audience’s suggestions. There will also be Baby Loves Disco, a party for the under 7s (and their parents!) with music for all ages to dance along to at a family-friendly volume – cue the dad dancing! The Tent will be sited at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, which also features ample parking and a variety of food and drink to purchase, so there’s no excuse not to come and experience the Spiegeltent in Canterbury! 19 October - 2 November. www.canterburyfestival.co.uk

TURNER AND CONSTABLE:

SKETCHING FROM NATURE WORKS FROM THE TATE COLLECTION This autumn Turner Contemporary presents its first historical exhibition since the blockbuster Turner and the Elements with a major showcase of works by JMW Turner, John Constable and their contemporaries. Bringing together 75 paintings from the Tate collection, the exhibition, organised by Compton Verney, explores the practice of oil sketching in the landscape in the fullest presentation of oil sketches from the Tate Collection to date. This approach to oil painting became increasingly fashionable during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These rarely shown works, radical for their time, demonstrate artists’ efforts to reflect direct experience of their environment, rather than a concern for careful composition. The exhibition is organised around six principal landscape themes, reflecting interests and subjects common to artists of the period: sketching from nature; the city; the picturesque; the Thames, rivers and coasts; and rural nature. These themes are explored in the works of JMW Turner and John Constable as well as George Stubbs and John Sell Cotman, among others. Organised by Compton Verney in Warwickshire, the exhibition is curated by Michael Rosenthal, Emeritus Professor of Art History, University of Warwick, one of the world’s foremost experts on the art of this period, and Anne Lyles, a leading authority on the art of John Constable. This exhibition appears alongside Connemara, an exhibition of work by Irish artist Dorothy Cross. Cross’s work presents a contemporary engagement with nature and the landscape, bringing the themes of Turner and Constable: Sketching from Nature. Works from the Tate Collection up to date.

The Autumn is almost upon us and that means that the South East’s theatres have a packed programme of events featuring some top names in theatre, comedy & music… here’s just a snapshot of some of the shows on offer….

The De La war Pavilion in Bexhill features rising indie stars Daughter and the more established Folk stalwarts Lau, while Ashford’s recent award winners, Revelation St Mary’s, welcomes 60’s folk icon Julie Felix to the stage. British 70’s band Nine Below Zero and Dutch prog rock heroes Focus are at the Quarterhouse Folkestone, and just up the road at the Leas Cliff Hall, comedian Alan Davies and 90’s bad boys Babyshambles also visit Folkestone. 007’s Pussy Galore, aka Honor Blackman talks about her dazzling career at the Astor Theatre, as well as Cornwall’s Kimbers Men who give us a taste of the sea with some rousing sea shanties as part of Deal’s Folk by The Sea festival also at the Astor.. For a touch of opera Dartford’s Orchard has the beautiful opera by Verdi, AIDA and the UK’s most colourful musical, Joseph & The Technicolour Dreamcoat. The legendary, Worlds longest running show, The Mousetrap is at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley. “X Factor” Lucy Spraggan treats us to her brand of Hip Hop/ Folk at the Margate’s Winter Gardens and sister theatre Theatre Royal has an excellent biopic on Winston Churchill’s early life in Winston On The Run Praise indeed.. “The W3 Entertainment Guide has been instrumental in getting the word out to the people of Kent about what we do here at the Astor Community Theatre since reopening in 2010. The layout is clear and easy to read, the editorial element is well written and I’m convinced that our ads in W3 make a big difference at the box office. Thanks to Colin and the team”. James Tillit, Artistic Director Astor Community Theatre Deal

ASHFORD TOWN CENTRE’S MUSIC AND ARTS VENUE REVELATION ST MARY’S HAS WON THE EAST KENT PEOPLE’S AWARD. The venue, run by the St Mary’s Arts Trust, was crowned the winner at the Canterbury Culture Awards recently The award looks for a cultural organisation in East Kent that demonstrates engagement with the local community, popularity across the region and continued efforts in developing existing and new audiences. Revelation St Mary’s has programmed numerous quality events since it opened two years ago, including sell-out shows from The Lightning Seeds, Fairport Convention, Gaz Coombes and Beth Orton, along with hosting world renowned orchestras, alternative cinema, radio plays and exhibitions. Cllr Jessamy Blanford, portfolio holder for culture, said: “This is fantastic news – to be nominated was an honour in itself, and to take home the prize shows what a tremendous impact St Mary’s has had on the region’s arts scene and in such a short period of time. “We are very proud to have established a centre of excellence for the arts in the heart of Ashford, and we look forward to an even bigger and brighter future.”

KIMBERS MEN

A sensation at festivals throughout Britain, Kimber’s Men are a very special group of close harmony, a capella singers. They sing maritime material and, whilst it would be unfair to call them a ‘shanty group’, sea shanties form the bulk of their repertoire. They also range through nautical ballads and broadsides to modern songs. Audiences have been raving about Kimber’s men and we think the Astor audience will love them too.

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S THE MOUSETRAP

The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner. For over 50 years, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap has been the world’s longest running stage production. The first ever tour of the recordbreaking production opened on 11 September 2012 in Canterbury and will continue through 2013 into 2014, with further dates now announced.

A ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart, Betrayal is Pinter’s most accessible work, enthralling and provocatively layered. HONOR BLACKMAN Honor Blackman has had a career on stage, in television and in films that has extended over sixty years. She has decided to mark this astonishing achievement by launching a new show in which she simply appears – as herself. In conversation with director Richard Digby Day, she tells stories of her childhood, of growing up during the Second World War, of her rise to stardom, her leather-clad triumph in television’s The Avengers, and her casting as Pussy Galore in the James Bond movie Goldfinger – a role which brought her world-wide fame and recognition. She will also share with audiences, for the first time, anecdotes concerning family, friends and colleagues; and tell of the necessity to rebuff producers eager to make her a star - at a price - and difficulties filming nude scenes both hilarious and otherwise and, of course, there will be some songs.

LUCY SPRAGGAN

The X Factor and Live & Unsigned runner up Lucy Spraggan has announced she will perform a special concert at Margate’s Winter Gardens later this year, to coincide with the expected release of her debut album. Spraggan withdrew from the 2012 series of The X Factor when she received a ‘freepass’ to week five after falling ill in week 4, believing it was unfair on the other contestants, meaning she still came second in her category. Describing her music as ‘A-Flop’ - a fusion of acoustic, folk and hip hop - Lucy was a previous runner-up in the Urban, Pop & Acoustic category of the UK’s Live & Unsigned competition, placing third overall in the competition, and went on to guest perform at the live Open Mic UK shows across the country, building a big fan base in the process

To finish on a happier note the Divers Arms in Herne Bay, home of the best live music in Herne Bay, had a musically themed, and class winning float in the recent Herne Bay Carnival… it was a “replica” of the Beatles Yellow Submarine!! ..and the band begins to play….. Make sure you pick up the free “bible” to live music in Kent … your local w3 Gig Guide which is out every fortnight…. It’s full of the best live music venues around. Keep an eye on our facebook page.. add your bits and bobs, gigs, news, snippets, etc. https://www.facebook.com/W3Gigs
