Cooking Ghosts
TUES 16TH OCTOBER, 7.30PM - PART OF CANTERBURY FESTIVAL Winter, 1974. A little girl waits for her mother to come home with a new baby. It’s twins! Summer comes and the three girls are caught on cinefilm, playing in the garden. Cooking Ghosts is the moving story of a woman who has no choice but to leave her children. A tale of tenderness and laughter turns to sadness and confusion, and the children abruptly lose their innocence. In this delicate show, an attempt to understand the past becomes a daring journey through the veils of memory that yields surprises and awakens ghosts.

A popular and friendly event, year on year the festival welcomes not only the local community and residents from the wider Borough, but also visitors and folk music enthusiast from all around the country and also from overseas. Several of our guests are from the USA but the emphasis always remains on traditional English folk song, music and dance. The festival gets off to a flying start on Thursday evening with the Acoustic Strawbs supported by Steve O’Kane & Fiona Mc Bain as well as Greg Harper, Chris Davis & Gary Holder. On Saturday the festival takes to the streets of Tenterden with nearly 60 Morris sides and dance display teams vying for attention in the Town centre and then joining in the procession before continuing to dance in the afternoon. The free music showcase stage, crafts marquee, music fayre, street stalls and the new dance stage, all open at around 10.00 a.m. and more concerts, workshops, folk clubs, music and song sessions and other events get under way from 10.30 a.m. and continue to midnight. THE CANTERBURY FESTIVAL
KENT’S INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL Canterbury Festival is now in its 29th year and hopes once again to bring a programme of events to Canterbury this October to suit all tastes, with a great selection of live music gigs, top comedians and unique theatre performances. The Festival will be utilising the Marlowe Theatre this year with four events including two nights with the soul superstar that is Van Morrison. A sixtime Grammy award winner and a legend in the music world, Van’s hits include Brown Eyed Girl and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You so don’t miss this rare opportunity to see him up close and personal in his only 2012 UK concert appearance this side of London. Alongside Van, the Marlowe will also host Seth Lakeman, folk singer, songwriter and fiddle player extraordinaire. Since the massive success of his second album, ‘Kitty Jay’, Seth has gone from strength to strength and due to popular demand has just released a second edition of last year’s critically acclaimed album ‘Tales from the Barrel House’. Joining Van and Seth at the Marlowe are the superb Gandini Jugglers with their visual masterpiece Smashed. Using 80 apples and vast amounts of crockery, Smashed is a veritable feast of sensational skill, theatricality and some of the best juggling you will ever see. Following the theatre theme, the Festival is delighted to welcome Sound & Fury’s Going Dark in between two sell out runs at the Young Vic in London. This immersive performance follows an astronomer as he loses his sight and uses innovative sound and light technology to create a unique environment. The Demon Barber’s new performance show, The Lock In! will also be coming to Canterbury and features an arresting combination of some of the best street dancers and traditional dancers the UK has to offer – imagine Riverdance meets Diversity and you’re nearly there! The Festival’s Opening Day with its free events for all the family just got bigger and bolder as we celebrate the 350th anniversary of Mr Punch with a puppet themed day. Featuring a puppet-driven rickshaw, a live Punch and Judy, traditional puppets and more, Canterbury city centre will be over-run with street performance after the annual Festival Parade (featuring over 300 young people) starts off at 12noon at the Cathedral Precincts. Comedy is provided in the shape of some of the best comedians on the circuit, including the irrepressible Jo Caulfield who will be discussing bad service and the pain of wrestling with the self scanners in Tesco, and BBC regular Marcus Brigstocke with his new idea for The Brig Society. And finally, don’t forget to check out the fantastic programme of live music on every night of the Festival at the Festival Club on St Alphege Street. From folk to world and bluegrass to jazz, this intimate venue will be hosting the soulful Barb Jungr, the bold new sound of folk band Mawkin, the raw and earthy Southern Tenant Folk Union and the tongue-in-cheek country music of Hank Wangford amongst many others. With the exciting news that the Spiegeltent (a highly decorative, travelling venue) will be coming to Canterbury as part of next year’s Festival, this could be your last chance to experience the magic of the Festival Club so don’t miss out! Tickets are available online at www.canterburyfestival.co.uk and via the Box Office at the Marlowe on 01227 787787. 36

The Strong & Silent Types Two solid acoustic guitars, a raging accordion and a rocking double bass. With Django Reinhardt’s swinging music as its starting point, the Strong and Silent Types play an exciting and soulful mix of gypsy swing, SouthAmerican rumba and bossa, and French musette. The band has experienced memorable moments on stage in their native Netherlands as well as abroad, ranging from big festivals to small events. It is no surprise that they enjoy the steady attention of a troupe of loyal admirers, and you can catch them this Autumn at their only UK gigs this year….in Kent. The Chambers Bar & Restaurant in Folkestone play host to the band’s first UK gig on the 1st November, and the now infamous basement bar is a superb venue to see this equally superb band. Birchington’s Minnis bar is second on the list of 3 gigs on 3rd November.
Headlong Headlong are a four piece band playing popular classic rock covers, comprising drums, guitar, keyboards and bass, with all four members taking lead or backing vocals, depending on whose voice suits a particular song, (or who shouted loudest in rehearsal!!). The Influences for the four members are fairly varied but include Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Beach Boys. Influences for the four members are fairly varied but include Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Beach Boys. Headlong were formed at the end of 2002 with band members all sporting music pedigrees from early ages, and some of the band members classically trained in musical disciplines. As a function band, there were limits to the type of sets they could play, and there was never really the chance to “let go” so Headlong was formed. Now there was a band who could turn it up a little bit and play to the sort of pub-rock crowds that they would normally be a part of. It didn’t take long for everything to gel and Headlong decided it would be time to search out some work, so the pub circuit was blessed with a fine, talented local band who could turn out some classic covers. Headlong try to bring their audience something a little more challenging than other bands, playing similar music without being too self-indulgent. Whatever happens, you’ll enjoy the mix of music and the content of the sets featuring artists such as, Bruce Springsteen ELO Thin Lizzy Van Halen Hendrix Jethro Tull The Who Rainbow Gary Moore Dire Straits Free and so many more - info@headlongband.co.uk 46

These guys have been on the local circuit for over 3 years now, gaining in momentum and Fanbase with every live performance they do. Playing all the local favourite venues in Medway, Thanet, Folkestone, Dover, Maidstone, Ashford, Canterbury and further afield If the call comes in , Its not surprising that they were fully booked for 2012 back in June with bookings coming in for 2013 already. Win!fest - Cancer Charity Gig
Sunday 30th September A message from organiser Paula Durkin My inspiration for Win!Fest was to do something positive and in memory of my father, Ted Hamer who sadly passed away on 16 May 2012 from bladder cancer aged just 69. My dad was such an inspiration for me, he gave a lot to charity and was so loved by everyone who knew him. I wanted to create an annual event to support cancer research charities and those who help support and provide care for the terminally ill. Cancer is unfortunately something that affects so many. There are a lot of sufferers who have benefited from breakthroughs in research but there is so much work that still needs to be done. I have been overwhelmed by the kindness, help and enthusiasm from people who have contacted me to provide support and help in putting together Win!Fest, which I hope will become an annual event,‌ this year, Win!Fest is very kindly being hosted by Tracy Davies of The Star, East Hill Ashford. The event, which is happening on Sunday 30 September from 1pm - 10pm, will be a family day and will feature 10 popular local music acts, including local band Topaz which I play in.. In addition to this, there will also be some fun stuff for the kids, great food and a raffle. The event is free with all the acts generously playing free of charge and we will collect donations which will split equally between Cancer Research UK and Pilgrims Hospice in Ashford. There is a Win!Fest website which provides lots more information, including interviews with each of the acts, including why they are playing at Win!Fest, as well as links to their websites and sound clips. There is also a page dedicate all those wonderful individuals who have very generously given their time and support to this day. Without these kind people, the day really couldn’t happen! The website address is: http://www.winfest.co.uk I hope to see as many people there as possible, you will be supporting a very worthy cause. Thank you again for all your kindness and support, Musicians appearing; Chess Smith Unplugged, Matthew Sharky Finn, Know Your Enemy, Push the Boundaries, Wireless, Blush, Topaz, Centaur Parting, Fat Badger & Horns High (headliner) at 10pm
