Winter Greetings from Shelly Strasser

Director of Recreation & Community Services Dear Community Members and Friends, Since March we have clearly learned that there is no step-by-step guide, “how-to” manual, or best practices for recreation departments to navigate a national health pandemic. The pandemic continues to challenge and test us but our innovative and inspiring staff continue to persevere with their creativity, compassion, flexibility and ability to switch gears at a moments notice during this unprecedented time. We have been living this for so long that “this” is starting to feel like our “new normal” or “routine.” However, we know that all are anxious, and we share that feeling, for the better days ahead, when we return to our pre-pandemic normals and routines. What a GREAT feeling that is going to be! There might actually be dancing in the streets, fireworks, and more! As we continue to monitor and develop our program plans, our instructors remain on standby and our entire department is committed to bringing you the high quality programming you have come to know and enjoy. We want everyone that participates in our programs to feel safe and truly enjoy the experience to its fullest and support each other in programs. Right now that means to continue to put “distance” between us physically causing some limitations in how we deliver programs and our ability to fully offer other programs. Understandably, community members are proceeding with caution, and not necessarily jumping back into participation in recreational activities, thus enrollment has seen huge decreases, sometimes resulting in cancellations. With all this taken into consideration, our department has decided to: - Split the Winter-Spring guide into two separate issues. One for winter programs and one for spring programs. - We will not be sending out the Winter Activity Guide via US mail but will post it online (www.wawmrec.com) and print pages to send via email or US mail upon request. - Plan to send our Spring 2021 Activity Guide via US mail. -Plan to send our Summer 2021 Activity Guide via US mail. Through our proven ability to provide programs in the safest manner possible this past summer and fall, we will continue to make modifications and take steps to follow best practices. One thing we have learned from this pandemic is that our amazing community WILL face it with determination and resilience! Please continue to follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and routinely check out our website. Thank you for your ongoing patience, understanding and support. TOGETHER we WILL get through this and be a better version of ourselves.

WINTER 2021

Dance Program Recreation Center

Level classifications: • Creative Movement classes are geared towards children that are 4-6 years old. This opportunity offers your child the chance to explore, improvise, and express themselves through dance while developing their motor skills, coordination, rhythm and listening skills. Basic movements of dance will be introduced. Your child won’t skip a beat in this class! • Level 1 is suggested for any participants with little to no experience in that particular dance-style. • Level 2 is suggested for participants who have experience in that particular dance-style and more challenging steps and combinations may be introduced. Dancers may be moved up or down a level based on our instructor’s recommendation. • Adult classes are for participants ages 14+.

DANCE

Let’s start the new year dancing! Dance is a great outlet for everyone to express your creativity and increase your strength, coordination, flexibility, endurance and physical fitness. Classes will focus on continuing to build the dancer’s foundation of dance. We have been closely monitoring the situation with COVID-19, and after much consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to host a dance recital this winter/spring.

Program Dates: January 28 - March 20 • Classes Begin: Thursday: 1/28 • Saturday: 1/30 Price: $40 RES/$60 NR

BATON

Diamond Twirlers Baton Competitive Teams 4+yrs

Youth Baton Classes 4+yrs

Recreation Center Diamond Twirlers is a club sport activity under the auspices of the WAWM RCS Department. Our State/Regional Champion Competitive Teams attend dance and baton competitions. Members of the group have used their baton/dance skills to compete not only in dance/baton contests but also in scholarship programs, pageants and community service roles. The goals of the group are to develop ability within the sport, promote teamwork and leadership skills and to have fun. The Director is National Baton Twirling Association Registered Judge/Coach, Kathy Kugi-Tom. Team placement is based on tryout scores and students will be assigned levels prior to start of season. If you want to challenge up a level, see Coach Kathy for tryout information. The Senior Team will need to retry for their positions. Placement is at the sole discretion of the Director. Schedules will be confirmed once teams are selected and additional practices could be added as needed. This year, the Half Time Dance Team and the Tiny Tot Baton Team will start the year virtually. Virtual practices will be held via Zoom from January-March and in-person practices will begin in April. No practice 4/3, 5/29, 7/3.
