no hiding the fact that Wadena T here’s saw substantial change in its business
sector in 2018, but have you noticed that women are the ones leading the charge? Female leadership blossomed in the downtown retail district of Wadena last year, with Lisa Baymler taking over Lyle’s Shoes (with husband Brian Koons at her side); Paulette Ohm taking over ownership of what is now 1776 Clothing Company; Chasity Peterson and husband Randy starting up All Around Divas Boutique (with Chasity handling much of the day-to-day business); Jodana Albers taking over Pure Gold Nutrition; Amber Brunell, while already established in her business Sweet Pickins, moving to a new location downtown, and; Lisa Leeseberg, who’s been feeding the hungry for years at Larry’s Family Pizza, announcing plans to open another business right in downtown Wadena, Leeseberg’s Sweet Treats. Other women took their businesses a step further this year outside of Jefferson Street, including Becky’s Photo and Kiki’s Kreations, to name just a couple.
These women all have something in common: they’ve been using social media to build their relationships with the community, often posting live videos to show off their new merchandise or daily specials.

Peterson said women have been at home for generations, and in the last generation, those moms have been the ones building businesses at home, increasingly online businesses. With the smaller boutiques becoming more popular, it’s opened doors for a lot of women to move their homebased or online business into a brick and mortar store. “I think it might have to do with an incline in online,” Peterson said. “Everything is online now, and who was home for all those years, the majority of the time it was the

woman at home, always looking for a way to make a couple hundred bucks a month. I think that’s why we’re seeing an incline.” She added that many of her closest female friends are the main breadwinners in their homes, yet if it wasn’t for the support of their husbands, they would not be able to do it. She said when her husband is gone, she can get lost in the struggles of running a business. “I see women with so much potential that struggle because their spouses are not supportive in that way,” Peterson said. She is unsure what her father’s generation would have thought about women being the one’s leading the business charge, but she said her children’s generation seems to have no concerns about it. “I feel like our generation, we always wanted maybe a little bit more than what we had when we were younger,” she said. “And we knew the only way a person could do that was by having two or multiple sources of income, and finding a way to do it that didn’t involve having your kids raised by daycare.” Michael Johnson, Wadena Pioneer Journal editor, can be reached at mjohnson@wadenapj.com or 218-631-2561.

rastic Measures Brewing is one of the latest additions to downtown Wadena after a grand opening March 15, 2019. Owner, operator and brewer Brett Doebbeling worked throughout 2018 to renovate the former hardware store into a brewery on the corner of Jefferson Street and Aldrich Avenue. The business brews a number of beers on site and serves them up to thirsty patrons. The brewery started out with six batches of brew for the grand opening. Every batch will yield approximately 300 gallons. The Drastic Measures team has invested a lot into their brand and beer.
Doebbeling hopes to serve food at the brewery in the future. An estimated $1 million has been invested into the business prior to its opening. Regular hours will be Wednesday and Thursday, 3-10 p.m., Friday, 3-11 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

began in her garage and recently moved to a downtown shop. The grand opening of Sweet Pickins’ new location on Jefferson Street was Nov. 24, 2018. The move was prompted by a desire to ingrain the business into the downtown scene. Brunell wanted to be a part of the epicenter of local commerce while enjoying various fairs and street sales. She’s also a big fan of her new display windows. When asked about her new location, Brunell was in the middle of the agonizing task of moving a business. Putting up signage, arranging products, and setting up an internet connection were dominating her time. Sweet Pickins is filled with a wide range of DIY furniture. Brunell finds old furniture and aesthetically redesigns it, drawing out its rustic character.
Amber Brunell is the owner of Sweet Pickins in Wadena, which reopened at a new location on Jefferson Street in Wadena in November 2018.

Around Divas Boutique opened in the Allformer Cyber Cafe building in Wadena
in November. Owners Chasity and Randy Peterson say they opened the store to provide fashionable, fun clothes at affordable prices. “I’ve been the girl that didn’t have the money. I feel like that’s who I want to target,” said Chasity. The store is filled with products ranging from shirts to jewelry to shoes. From the ground up, it’s designed to be a one-stopshop for everything girly.
Some items are designed to be vehicles of positivity. The Peterson’s lost their son when he was struck by a drunk driver near Hawley, and now their boutique sells shirts with positive messages emblazoned on them, like “Be Kind,” with proceeds going directly to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and similar organizations. The Petersons said opening the boutique is a fresh start for their family. Located at 210 Jefferson Street South, All Around Divas has a regularly updated Facebook page and bustling online store. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Creek Organic moved to a new U nion location in December, taking on all
the challenges a business must endure during transition — renovation, communicating with customers, and generally settling into a new facility. The business helps farmers produce healthier food, specializing in organic and non-GMO feed, seed supplies, dog food and organic gardening tools. James Crook, the general manager of Union Creek Organic, believes in putting farming before chemicals. High-quality soil combined with traditional farming techniques produce the best crops, he says. The health of people is a pillar of his operation. Raising organic crops and livestock is increasingly popular. Crook has been busy filling rail cars with organic corn to be sent to agriculture operations all over the country.
James Crook, general manager of Union Creek Organic.
Union Creek Organic can be found next to Merickel Lumber off of Hwy 10 west in Wadena. Business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A grand opening for the new location is slated for spring 2019.

odana Albers took over ownership of Pure Gold Nutrition in June. The business whips up shakes and teas made to meet the nutritional desires of each unique customer. Albers can attest to the weight loss potential of her products, which are powered by Herbalife Nutrition supplements. Weight loss may not be the first thing people think of when looking over the selection of 30-plus shakes, which include flavors like donut, cookie, cheesecake, muffin, pie and cake batter. But the shakes provide these flavors in a well-balanced, low calorie meal-in-a-glass. Albers notes that the shakes are not just for weight loss. With the right adjustments, they can be used to gain muscle mass, too. All drinks are less than 250 calories and include 24 grams of protein.
“We also offer personalized coaching, whether for gaining muscle, losing weight or gaining energy,” Albers said. As an independent Herbalife distributor, she coaches people on what their food should look like in a day and helps them set goals.

Work continues on Super One foods remodel got out last summer that Super W ord One Foods will be getting a brand
new store, in its former location on the southside of the BNSF railroad. The announcement came as crews began demolishing the interior of the old building in August. Super One Foods manager Jim Walz said the store last operated in that location nine years ago, until closing its doors and moving to its current site, which was then the home of The Grocery Store by Mason Brothers. The move was a way for the two grocery stores to
come together and compete as one, following the opening of Walmart in Wadena. The move allowed Super One to get into a newer, larger facility, but now, Walz said, the owners of the chain decided to make an investment in Wadena by moving forward with this new store. The announcement brought excitement throughout town, especially among those south of the tracks. Walz noted that the desire from residents to have a grocery store on the southside has never really gone away.

ecky Berndt preserves special memories through photography. Thanks to a move into the lower level of the Wadena Family Dental Office last year, Berndt has been able to expand her offerings. Her new photo studio there, Remember When Photos, is devoted to capturing moments that deserve to be cherished. Photography has been a lifelong passion for Berndt. In 2007, she threw herself into the craft and started working toward operating a full-fledged photography business. A studio makes photography easier, but Berndt also enjoys taking her camera out into the wild, where she can chase the action. Her portfolio includes newborn, maternity, school and family photos. Check out beckysrememberwhenphotos .com for more information. Berndt may also be reached through direct messaging on Facebook.

Long Prairie Sanitation buys City Dray BY MICHAEL DENNY
mdenny@wadenapj.com
Nov. 1, City Dray Inc. was bought by O nLong Prairie Sanitation.
After decades of service, Barb Herr, previous owner of City Dray Inc., sold the long running sanitation business to the Long Prairie, Minn.-based company. The blue bins of Long Prairie Sanitation are now seen all over Wadena. After the acquisition, services on the residential level were promised to stay the same. New equipment, larger dumpsters, and new trucks were implemented to make cleaning more efficient. The biggest change affected commercial waste removal, with those rates now dependent on the amount of refuse removed, as determined by a scale.
Long Prairie Sanitation offers services in Morrison, Douglas, Wadena, Cass, and portions of Todd counties.

ob Tubandt sold Lyle’s Shoes to new owners Lisa Baymler and Brian Koons last fall, after owning the business for 40 years. Tubandt’s history in the shoe business went back 58 years, when he drove off the family farm at age 17 and started as a trainee at Lyle’s Ready-to-Wear, working for Lyle Goodrich. Since taking over ownership, Baymler said she’s been busy providing big name brands with small town service, which the business has been known for. She’s been making the shop her own while trying to keep it a familiar place in Wadena. Baymler has added new Smart Wool products, athletic shoes, conceal and carry purses and a military discount on top of other discounts that were already offered at the store.

The business continues to sell small engines, stand-alone engines, parts for current makes and models as well as those from years ago, lawn mowers, garden tractors, tillers, snow and leaf blowers, trimmers and more. Dental building, but is now moved back to Tesch’s home. According to Tesch, visibility and customer engagement have been difficult from the basement location. Her sewing services and products will still be largely available as she runs the business from her home. She plans to move into a new storefront location in the future, and would also like to implement sewing classes into her business. Lessons would primarily be geared toward kids. Memory bears have been one of the most popular products made by Tesch. A memory bear is a specially made teddy bear which represents the life and passing of a family member or friend.
