Physics Field Trips

Action World Auckland

29 January 2014

Auckland Action World

The students spent the afternoon at action world. This trip was designed especially for the accelerated program as some relief from their intense schedule of study. Action world is an exciting outdoor adventure park, where our students take on many challenges - including walking the high wire, swinging through the air on flying trapeze, and scaling a climbing wall. There are no harnesses or safety wires, all of the activities are above inflatables that cushion your fall. A fun day was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

23 April 2014 Rainbows End

The students experience the Physics of forces and motion first hand during the annual trip to Rainbows End. This is a favourite trip amongst students who study Physics. A report on the trip is worth 5% of their final Physics Assessment. In the report the students study the physics of many of the rides- from the rollercoaster (and its loop the loop), to the bumper cars, log flume, and swinging pirate ship. This year’s January and August students bravely took on the new Stratosphere ride which opened for the first time in April. The ride description says it “is seriously scary with a complete 360 degree rotation which challenges seasoned thrill seeking ride enthusiasts” However our students were undeterred and gave it a go. A fun and enjoyable day was had by everyone.

Biology Trip - Auck 19 March 2014 Auckland Zoo

Trip to the Auckland Zoo is one of the most eagerly awaited parts of the Biology course. Not only do the students relate classroom work to realty, they also have lots of fun Understanding animal behaviour, identifying various primate and their evolution; relating them to human evolution, is an important part of the Biology. Students carry out activities in groups and attend 2 lectures where they are exposed to various hominid skulls and ancient tools. Monkeys seem to be a favourite animal amongst most students. It’s a pleasure to see students in a different environment.

Muriwai Geography Field Trip 21 March 2014 Muriwai

The sun was shining and the waves were sparkling for 52 Taylors College students and 4 staff on the Physical Geography field trip to Muriwai Beach on Auckland’s wild west coast. Students spent the morning observing wave processes and collecting data, using specialised equipment kindly loaned to us by The University of Auckland. Highlights of the day were climbing the cliffs to take in spectacular views of the gannet colony, lunch at the local cafÊ, hurling oranges into the waves to measure long-shore drift and scrambling down the steep bank to experience the stunning cliffs and intimate atmosphere of the mysterious Maori Bay. Special thanks to Joe Fagan from the University of Auckland for accompanying us on the trip and sharing his expertise

Can you imagine giving up one whole day o your weekend to go on a school trip? What about getting on the bus at 7am in the mor ing? 30 science students and 4 teachers did just that – and it was great! 28 - 29 March 2014 Rotorua

of t rnd

We headed down to Rotorua on Friday morning with the aim of exploring the chemistry, biology and geography of Rotorua. First stop was the steam and boiling mud of Hells Gate. Along with the full sunshine it was hot as, well, hell! The highlight for many students was the visit to the Tamaki Brothers Maori Cultural Village in the evening: a very interesting look at traditional Maori games, weapons and crafts, as well as an excellent hangi. Most students had at least 3 plates of food! After staying overnight, and a late night Mah-jong session for some, we discovered the glory of NZ’s 20 sheep breeds followed by some screaming and excitement as people plunged down in freefalls, jet boated, or went on the mini luge. Tired but happy faces on the bus back home, and some very good memories.

Economic Field Trip 13 - 14 April 2014 Action World

This year 10 students and 2 teachers flew across and stayed in Wellington for 2 days. This trip was organised and led by Sanjay Kant. The purpose of this trip was to consolidate classroom learning by visiting important institutions. The trip incorporated economic learning, fun activities and sight-seeing. We can proudly say that the cost per student was $200 and it will be hard for anyone to beat this amount. Lindsay came to the party by financing specially designed outfits for the tour group and Andrew (Marketing) threw in special Taylors College USB’s that was used to store memories.

p - Wellington

The group visited Te Papa and the cable car attractions on Sunday and followed it up with Reserve Bank and Parliament tour the next day. In between there was time also to explore the Old and New St Pauls Church. A special trip video was created and was posted on the Taylors Facebook page together with all the photos. It is anticipated that these trips will become a bi-annual feature of the Commerce Department. Sanjay also organised the Tip Top Factory tour for all Economics students in Term 1 which was linked to their Assignment 1. The Commerce Department acknowledges the support of the management in making sure these things happen.

Joanne’s Statement Joanne Yee Yi Chong

As a girl from North Borneo with low self-esteem and confidence, I’m glad that I was able to discover and express myself through art. I remembered vividly when I became so frustrated because I had a hard time deciding on a subject or ‘the message’ that I was on the verge of quitting art. However, growing up as a sports girl, I learned not to succumb to defeat so easily. Therefore, I ended up with ‘’decay” as my topic. No doubt, it was an uncanny and unappealing topic but I love how it can be reflected onto several different aspects of life. For example, a girl who was so broken inside but never fails to put a smile on someone else’s face everyday. Or maybe, despite the case of a missing plane, unfair election and inevitable corruption, people still find Malaysia a beautiful and lovely place to visit. The main point that I am trying to portray through my artwork is that everything has beauty, it’s just that not everyone pays close attention to it. The very first impression that I had from my friends when they saw my work was the 'yuck' face, and that was exactly what I wanted. However, after a good long look and a brief explanation of my work, they seemed to be really interested and thought that it wasn’t

really that bad after all. My inspirations came mainly from Anselm Keifer, Salvatore Meo, Cy Twombly, Julie Wolfe, as well as ample days of staring into the blank. Needless to say, incorporating all three artists' models and my ideas together was a headache. But with the countless help and encouragements from the teachers and tutors, I am undeniably grateful and elated that I am able to complete and pass the art program. Throughout the course, it was definitely a privilege to experience and observe how different people reacted differently to meeting deadlines, anger, stress, joy, grief, anxiety, and, not forgetting, the ‘ugliness’ of my work. While perfection is too mainstream and overrated, unfeigned beauty is being overlooked.

Alumni Interviews

Antonius Christianto Hatmodjo TAFY 2012: January intake

Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) at Massey University

Indonesia

I would like to start with a statement “life is always full of surprises and it will never be dull”. Simply put, this statement describes my journey in life, including my year at Taylors College. During my high school year in Indonesia, I made up my mind to become a veterinarian due to my personal experience of losing my dearest dog. However, I was unsure about which university I should go to and it took me one year before I finally made up my mind to choose New Zealand and decided to go to Massey University. Studying abroad was not easy for me – I was struggling to cope with the cultural differences, not to mention the language, considering that I come from a non-English speaking country. Nevertheless, Taylors College has always been there for me. I was provided with a lot of help which eventually allowed me to adjust to New Zealand. Resulting from this, I was able to utilise my study to its highest level and I was rewarded with achievements during my foundation programme. For example, I achieved a first in Biology and English, and an award for being one of the high performers. After graduating from Taylors College, I was finally eligible to enrol for a Bachelor of Veterinary Science at facebook.com/taylorscollegenz Massey University. In this degree, students must undergo selection in the first semester, proving themselves to be worthy of attending vet school. With all the efforts that I put in back then, I achieved an overall A grade. This got me through the selection and I am now doing my first year of vet school. Obviously, it was a big moment in my life. However, I retained confidence in myself but was also conscious that it was also due to Taylors College’s guidance during my foundation year which allows me to be where I am now.

To me, the key to survival at university is to give your best effort to everything. I learned this during my foundation programme and my advice to those of you who are doing this course is to make the most of everything! For example, pay full attention in class, invest every effort when doing assignments and be well- prepared beforehand. Also, most importantly, be organised! Use your time efficiently and try not to procrastinate. Eventually, these will help you to build positive attitudes that will continue throughout your study. Keep on fighting and do not ever give up on your dream, although there will always be obstacles along the way. Remember, you are greater than you think you are.
