EDITORS' LETTERS: 'IN CONTROL'

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. Proverbs 25:28 If you ever find yourself listening to a conversation unfolding somewhere within earshot (which, quite frankly, happens more than I should admit) and someone mentions: “The fruits of the Spirit…” I am sure your mind, like mine, takes a trip down memory lane. It is one of those memory gems we all learn at some stage and I’m sure right now you’re thinking to yourself: “Now what were they? I think there were eight of them… no nine…” For those of you who can remember them all, you have my respect (bonus points for the right order) but for those of us, who could serve to gain from a little refresher, let’s take a look: Galatians 5:19-23 - The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies… But the fruits of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Now, I know there is a near infinite amount that can be said about those nine ‘fruits’ but I’m going to focus on one that I feel is often passed over despite its vital importance Self-control.

It’s strange to even contemplate self-control sometimes; it’s simply something that’s expected of you; a sign of maturity. But do we ever consider how many problems in this world arise from a lack of self-control? A few things come to my mind as possibilities: some of the incidence of diabetes and obesity, drug addictions like smoking and alcoholism, divorces due to affairs, pornography, murder… I believe that self-control lies at the heart of many of these issues. If we take another look at the text, it is interesting to note that before Paul mentions this list of virtues, he makes mention of the ‘acts of the flesh’. Sexual immorality. Impurity. Debauchery. Jealousy. Fits of rage. Drunkenness. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that Paul put these lists next to each other and then ends on self-control.

It’s easy to think of self-control at a conceptual level: the individual’s ability to regulate one’s behaviour. What I find really interesting (feel free to disagree) is the idea of operationalising self-control. That is, how can we measure this conceptual phenomenon? There are several methods that psychologists developed in an attempt to investigate self-control or impulsivity, but the one that I find particularly interesting is ‘Delayed Gratification’.

Essentially, it attempts to measure someone’s ability to delay the gratification or pleasure of a small reward for a larger reward later on. A test of this kind is often done with children and marshmallows (it is creatively called the ‘Marshmallow Test’) to test a child’s self–control.

Basically, you give the child one marshmallow and tell them that if they wait until you return before eating the marshmallow, you will give them another marshmallow. The result? Some children eat the marshmallow before you even leave the room while others can patiently wait. Some other factors like whether you trust the person giving you the marshmallow to return or whether they were telling the truth will obviously play a role, but it is one of many ways to examine self-control. SMILING AT STRANGERS BY SCOTT FATT If you attend an Adventist church, Bible study or Sabbath School discussion you are likely to hear a phrase along the lines of, ‘Outreach to others doesn’t have to be big things. Outreach can be through God changing you and setting you apart from others in your workplace, school, or university: a smile to a stranger, doing what is right despite the cultural cues, declining alcohol on a night out with your friends. If people notice these things they’ll questions which can lead to bigger things.’ It is a trumpeted notion that being a Christian gives us an edge over those who aren’t in the church so that others may notice our good deeds and inquire where they can get the same peace and blessings. Undoubtedly the knowledge that we have become ‘new creations’ and ‘died to our old selves’ should empower us with the ability to ‘shine our light before men’ with newfound love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, and goodness. There is no denying that personal testimony is a powerful tool for sharing God’s love. However, the statement above has sat uncomfortably with me for years. Attending a public school and university, most of my friends are, at worst, Christian-ridiculing Atheists, and, at best, struggling-nominal Christians, and I’d be pressed to find such a group of outstanding, loyal, loving, peaceful, and driven young men and women anywhere else. Some are members of young United Nations groups, others involved in Human Rights work, others fire-fighters, aspiring doctors and community involved volunteers. Even novelty ideas of ‘purity until marriage’, ‘abstinence from alcohol’, and ‘vegetarianism’ is not uncommon amongst those who know nothing of Christ. How can a Christian be picked out from amongst these people based on being ‘happier’ or a ‘better person’?

Occupation While I study full time doing a B of Psychology at Macquarie University, I also work part time selling log cabins, as well as tutoring. My goal is to become a clinical psychologist so that I can help people in the mental health field (and also do the whole Sherlock Holmes, Mentalist thing). If you could sum up yourself in exactly five words, what would they be? I can’t decide between: ‘That dude with the cool hair’ or ‘Not creative enough for this’.

On flip side, I am similarly underwhelmed. Does being a Christian give you protection from depression, emotional scars from abuse, or from anxieties and stress? Certainly these issues are heavily prevalent amongst my non-Christian peers, but you would have to be blind to believe that they are not also severe issues within the church.

Are there any hobbies you are particularly passionate about? My hobbies pretty much start and end at basketball. Occupation I tutor high school students in science subjects (biology and chemistry) and *surprise surprise* I am studying Science at University of Sydney and loving it. As with most science students, my final destination is still to be determined but I have a particular interest in nutrition and social psychology. If you could sum up yourself in five words, what would they be? Always serious (insert sarcasm here) Are there any hobbies you are particularly passionate about? I love nothing more than taking a short trip back in time by English classic novels, making and listening to music every second of my life and making people laugh. I don’t think I could call a hobby…it’s definitely an obsession. Which celebrity do you get mistaken for? Myself. I am a celebrity. Ultimate superpower? I have always been a fan of teleportation, because then I could wake up 5 minutes before I need to be anywhere…

Favourite Old Testament book? Ecclesiastes. It’s written by the wisest man who ever lived, it’s poetic and yet it cuts right to the heart of everyday life with Christ. Favourite New Testament book? Matthew, or any of the Gospels really. The more time I spend reading about Jesus, the more I want to emulate Him in my own life. Favourite Bible Verse? Philippians 4:12-13 “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Are there any hobbies you are particularly passionate about? There is nothing I enjoy more than surrounding myself with blank paper, canvasses, pencils, paints and music. When I’m in ‘the zone’, I feel as though I could paint forever. Which celebrity do you get mistaken for? I am the queen. Ultimate superpower? After giving this much thought, I’ve decided that the ability to transform into into anything you imagined would allow you to possess any superpower. You could turn into a time machine, be the fastest person alive, or invisible. It’s a flawless plan! Favourite Old Testament book? Although my favourite Bible character is Joseph, my favourite book is Ecclesiastes. It is so practical and has some great life advice. Ecclesiastes 9:10 is my life ‘motto’. Favourite New Testament book? I know it’s perhaps a cliché choice, but you really can’t go past Romans. It made me fall in love with Jesus. Other than that, I really love 1st John

RAUL CID OccupationI work as a civil engineer, for those who don’t know what that entails, I’m involved in designing roads and drainage subdivisions. If you could sum up yourself in exactly five words, what would they be? Sporty, Shy, Adventurous, Enjoys-alaugh, Sporty Are there any hobbies you are particularly passionate about? I love football (the real football, that’s soccer for Australians), kayaking and mountain biking. Yes, it pretty much revolves entirely around sport. Which celebrity do you get get mistaken for? I always get mistaken for Mexicans, does that count? Ultimate superpower? Flying. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t want that. Favourite Old Testament book? Exodus. I like it because of the 'Exodus Story’ – God delivered the Israelites from slavery in spite of their own iniquities and he still does that for us today. He saves us from the slavery of our sin despite our flaws and failures. Favourite New Testament book? The Gospel of John. I love the perspective he provides on the story of Jesus and the beauty of how he died for us. Favourite Bible Verse? Salmos 91:2 – “ Diré yo a Jehová: Esperanza mía, y castillo mío; Mi Dios, en él confiaré. ” For those who don’t speak Spanish: Psalm 91:2 – “I will say of the Lord,“He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Favourite Bible verse? Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, angels nor demons, neither the past nor the future, nor any powers, height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.”

SABBATH SCHOOL SUMMARY: PROVERBS

Another quarter has passed, and yet another lesson has been What stood out for me was that we have a God who done and dusted! WAYS TO WITNESS

There are endless ways one can share their Faith. You can post a Bible text on Facebook, invite your friends to youth events/socials, or get involved in volunteer work like “Yes We Care” or the Redfern ministry. When people ask what you did on the weekend, you can respond with, “I went to church.”. Furthermore, living a “good Christian lifestyle” will invite people to ask questions as to why you do or don’t do certain things like everyone else. These are just some of the great ways of witnessing you always hear about. But can we go deeper then that? Different people may respond to different witnessing techniques, however, I believe the most effective way of sharing your faith is by proclaiming the great hope we have in Christ, and revealing the marvellous things the God Almighty has done in your life! Paul writes in Colossians 4:5-6, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”. What I understand from this text is that we must always speak to others with God on our mind, eagerly waiting for an opportunity to share our Faith with them. How can we do this? Here are some of my personal examples.

A few weeks ago, my uncle had suddenly passed away from a heart attack, he was only 54 years old. During that week, a Hindu friend asked me how I was holding up. I responded with, “It is hard to see him go, and so suddenly too, but death doesn’t worry me as much as others. I am a Christian, and so I have hope that I will see him again.”. Those few sentences then opened up a good discussion on what each of us believe happens after death.

We can witness to others through our tough times, but we should not forget about witnessing through the good times as well! As David wrote in Psalm 40:3, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.”. By publicly acknowledging the marvellous things God has done in your life, many will see this and be encouraged to put their trust in your God! It seems so easy to do in a church setting, when you can freely say “Praise God, or AMEN!”. But what about praising God in the presence of outsiders?

A few months ago, I was catching up with an old friend who is not really a devout Christian, but she believes in God. She noticed a difference in me since last year, and she asked, “What changed?”. All of a sudden, I was battling in my mind whether to tell her the truth that God had turned my life around, or to brush it off with no mention of God’s work. I was so tempted to do the latter, because I was scared of how she would respond. But the Holy Spirit was with me, and He gave me the courage to tell her the truth! Surprisingly, she responded with opening up about her faith, and wanting to be more involved in church! Praise God!

Finally, I will leave you with this. The words you say and the things you do to share your faith may seem effective, but without Christ's love, it has no purpose. Without God's divinity, it has no power. Without the Holy Spirit's guidance, it has nowhere to flourish. Therefore, ALWAYS pray for an opportunity to share, for the wisdom of the words to say, for the right attitude, and for the work of the Holy Spirit. Whether you do this in the morning before you get out of bed, during the time you are witnessing, or even afterwards, don’t forget it, because God’s blessing is the most essential ingredient in sharing your Faith.

The world has 196 countries, and most of the countries in the world have their own unique currency. The power of the currency to buy in the international market depicts its value. So which is the strongest currency in the world? US dollar? Japanese Yen? British Pound? Euro? Chinese Renminbi? Or dare we to even think, the Australian dollar (AUD)? As at the time of writing, it is the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), currently trading at 1 dinar equaling 3.33 US dollars. The British pound and Euro both making it into the top 10 list. So should we be exchanging our AUDs for KWDs? Kuwait’s oil reserves is the fifth largest in the world and due to the returns received from the trade of oil and gas, it is one of the richest countries of the modern world and its currency is the strongest. But there is a currency that is far even stronger than any other currency on the whole planet? Stronger and more powerful than Kuwait’s. That is, God’s currency, the currency which is traded in heaven. Jesus himself said in Matt 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”.Jesus tells us to lay up heavenly treasures which never depreciate, nor lose their value. This heavenly treasure is so precious that you will be thinking about it all the time, dream of it, talk of it, your heart will be set upon it. So what is this treasure Jesus is talking about? In the story of the Rich Young Ruler (Matt 19:16-22), Jesus told the young man that if he would give to the poor, he would have treasure in heaven. That was Jesus’s explanation as to how to store up treasure in heaven. By giving away you store. Opposite to what we normally think. Humanly, we think and act, by saving we build up. By keeping we have more. Jesus says the opposite – by giving away you store treasures.

Giving to others what God has given to us in the first place. Our talents, time, possessions, money…..even ourselves. We belong to Him we are not ours. Let us experience what Zaccheus experienced – and have Jesus say about you and me Salvation has come to this house today”. Let’s deal in the strongest currency ever, God’s heavenly currency. - Colin Raymond

As most of you are probably aware, Nestle recently made a public statement that global supplies of Nutella would soon cease due to a shortage of cacao trees. This April fools prank caused students everywhere to impulsively stock up on the delicious chocolatey spread. So in order to appease your gullible, humiliated (yet relieved) swee ttooth, we thought we'd teach you how to use up your lifetime stock and get your cupboard space back!

Dear Love-Is-Blind, Is it seriously such a big deal? This girl seems like such a glasses half-empty type of person, and if she is that pedantic, is she really the right one for you? Relationships are all about compromise, so it’s inevitable that sacrifices will have to be made. However, how much you choose to compromise will define your relationship for better or for worse. Ask yourself why you don’t want to wear contacts; is it simply stubbornness, fear of change or fear of losing one behind your eyeball? Ask her why she doesn’t like your glasses; is it because they hide your face or because she feels they increase your nerd factor and remind her of her high school stalker? In any case, the easiest compromise would be to wear one contact and one monocle, which will not only appease her wishes but also make you the classiest gentleman around. Yours Truly,

We're forever told to 'read our Bible and pray everyday'. Goodness me, there's even a song about it! While this seems like such a simple feat, lets be honest, sometimes it can be harder than you think to find the time, motivation and inspiration to do this. So, we've dedicated this section to practical actions that can help improve your spiritual life!

This quarter: 'IN THE CAR' 1. AUDIOVERSE AudioVerse is a free app that has uploaded hundreds of free sermons for you to listen to. (Thanks Joy!) Instead of listening to the radio, be inspired by the Bible every morning on your way to work! It's a great conversation starter and will expand your mind! Who doesn't want that?

2. PRAY AND DRIVE We're not suggesting you fold your hands and close your eyes on the open road, but sitting in traffic is a perfect opportunity to talk to God. People often 'go for a drive' to clear their minds, so why not lay all your struggles before Christ?

3. LICENSED FOR LIFE Store a few Bible quotes around in your wallet. Not only will it help you remember them, but it will encourage you (*ahem* when you're short on cash *ahem* store up your treasures in heaven, guys!), catalyse conversation, and you can even give them out to friends if you wish! HOW TO DO STUFF: PROCRASTINATION

As students, we all struggle with procrastination. In fact, I'm procrastinating uni work right now by writing this 'How To' section (oh the irony!). Here are just a few tips you can follow to break the habit and get on with life! (No, Facebook is not real life guys...)

Start off by listing everything you have to get done. Do this day by day. TIPS: Don't micro-manage. If your tasks are too specific, you won't end up doing them! Also, start by listing a few things you've already completed to make yourself feel accomplished!

Lets be honest, we're all children at heart. And what do children like more than being rewarded for good work? Not much. The same goes for you. If you work hard, reward yourself! But if you find yourself procrastinating, give yourself a smack! I'm just kidding; but blocking Facebook really isn't the most debilitating thing, I assure you.

Have a messy room? Set aside half an hour and see how tidy you can make it. Need to finish an assignment? Give yourself one hour and NO MORE. TIPS: Don't allow this time to be more than about an hour. If this isn't enough, set a break in between, or you'll get lazy!

Ever feel completely overwhelmed by how much you have to get done? Us too. But let me assure you, multitasking is not the way to go about it. You'll only end up half heartedly completing everything. Finish one thing at a time and you'll be a lot less stressed out! TIPS: See the first box.

Oh, but I really need to format that title differently! If I don't have my eyeliner on point, no body will like me! STOP. NOBODY CARES. Often the amount of effort you put into little details is not conducive to rewards. Sometimes 'eh, good enough' really is good enough!

The 'Two Minute Rule' was coined in David Allen's book 'Getting Things Done'. He suggests that every goal, whether big or small, because of the 'inertia of life'. Once you start doing something, it's much easier to continue. Want to become a better writer? Just write one sentence and you'll find yourself writing for an hour. Want to run three times a week? Just put your running shoes on and walk out the door! Want to make reading a habit? Just read the first two pages of a book and you'll end up reading three chapters.
