Fire-starter’s ‘error of judgement’ Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The man whose fire sent black smoke over parts of Richmond last year says he’s embarrassed and remorseful. Brett Mytton has owned land

near Three Brothers Corner for more than 30 years and had numerous controlled fires over that time. But a fire to burn an old fibreglass boat last May ended with him facing a maximum sentence of a $300,000 fine or two years in jail. He says the boat was salvaged by

a friend after it was wrecked on the Boulder Bank. After salvaging some parts from it, they’d decided that burning it would be a good way to dispose of it. Brett says that decision was “an error of judgement”. He is now undertaking a restorative justice process, which

includes donations to the Richmond Library and the Richmond Fire Brigade, as well as an article in the Weekly to educate the community about open air fires. “I did a pretty silly thing and I’m facing the consequences of it. I’m still to face a judge and see what they say. But I’ve put my hand up

and pledged guilty, and I feel a lot of remorse and embarrassment about my actions.” He says he did get a permit for the fire, but didn’t tell the Waimea Rural Fire Force what he would be burning.

Showing some love with baking Jessie Johnston Nothing shows love and support more than a bit of home baking, which is exactly how parents at Pinegrove Kindergarten in Brightwater are helping out parents with newborns. “We hear from staff when families here at the kindy have a new baby, so we just put the word out on the notice board and Facebook page,” says Pinegrove parent Brenda Helliwell. “It’s just a really nice way to acknowledge

that they’ve had a baby and it is quite hard when you’ve got a new baby, so it’s just good to give them some love.” Led by the kindergartens family liaison group, many other parents also contribute and it isn’t always just baking. “We’ve had nappies and fresh produce, eggs, just anything that would be useful for them,” says Brenda. “We also have a former teacher and her mother who knit little booties and a cardigan to

“No not really, I bike to work anyway so I can just use the pavement to get round construction. I think the storm water update has to be done, not sure about the rest of it.”

“No not yet. Beautifucation of the street sounds like a good idea, maybe it will affect me more when it gets futher up Queen St. You do have to be patient at the lights though.”

“I’ve found it pretty organised. I’ve had to wait in traffic but not that long, just need patience. It’s about time for an update, we can’t leave it forever.”

“It hasn’t really affected me because I don’t usually go down there, I park in the Richmond Mall carpark mainly. It will be disruptive but Queen St needs an update.”

Waimea Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Ian Reade says Brett’s case highlights the need for people to be honest and know the rules before they light fires. “Every fire in the open air in the Nelson and Tasman areas needs a permit, all year round. When you apply for that permit you’re asked what kind of materials you’re burning, so you need to detail what you’re putting in the heap.” Brett admits he was in the wrong. “I got a permit, but it never came up about what I was wanting to burn. I put my hand up, I was neglectful.” He says when he first lit the fire there was a lot of smoke, but it didn’t smell. “But it didn’t take long before I realised that I’d made a mistake.” At the time, Waimea Weekly reported that a passer-by de-

Wakefield crafters knit for families Jessie Johnston Reporter

jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Wakefield Craft Group has been using their talents for the benefit of others, knitting garments to be distributed by the local Plunket organisation and Nelson Hospital. “We thought instead of just knitting for ourselves we’d do it for others, so the first year we started knitting blankets and they went overseas to Nepal for the earthquake,” says Judy Hutchings. “Now we’ve been knitting for Plunket in the Tasman district and the premature babies [at Nelson Hospital].” The group started knitting for their latest cause in September last year, using a grant from the Tasman District Council to purchase 219, 100g balls of wool, “although people have knitted other items as well from their own wool, so it’s probably around 250 balls of wool,” says Judy. While the hospital’s antenatal department will take the premature baby clothes, Plunket will take the rest and hand them out to families in Tasman, including Tapawera and Motueka. “It’s great, we hand out a lot to new families, especially coming into winter,” says Punket’s 011649 Summer Harvest Fair Poster A4_v3.pdf

Schools deal with suspensions: There have been a total of four students suspended in the region’s intermediate and secondary schools so far this year. A Nelson intermediate student was suspended last week after inflicting a head wound on another pupil on Monday. Waimea College principal Scott Haines has also confirmed that they have suspended two students so far this year - both for gross misconduct. Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson also says that they excluded a student at the beginning of the term. Open day at Port Nelson: Nelsonians will get the chance to explore the inner workings of Port Nelson this Sunday from 10am - 4pm when the port opens its gates for a community fun day that happens every three years. Entry is on Low St with parking available on Wildman Ave, or follow the signage through the main entrance.

It’s really nice to get that wool back on the children, keeping them warm, and the blankets go down a treat as well

with new mums.” Judy says they’ve seen firsthand how appreciated their knitting is by families. “We had one lady who came about a month after she got donated some of our knitting. She came to our craft group and has con-

tinued coming, her little boy is now eight months old and he’s one of us.” The group says they’ll continue to use their skills to help others, having recently received another grant to purchase more wool.

Male Voice Choir: This weekend, the Nelson Male Voice Choir will be hosting the Wagga City Rugby Male Voice Choir, who are currently touring New Zealand. The concert will be held on Sunday, March 5, at Old St Johns Nelson at 2pm. The programme will be sung by both groups separately and as a combined choir. Tickets can be purchased from the I-Site on Trafalgar St, Summit Real Estate Stoke, Richmond Mall information desk, or at the door on the day. Adults cost $20 while under-18s are just $5.

Lifestyle block owners and irrigators on the Waimea Plains should have received an information document and survey in February. The survey is seeking expressions of interest in the purchase of shares which will fund Plains water users’ equity contribution to the construction of the proposed Waimea Community Dam. Waimea Irrigators Limited would like to thank all those people who have sent back their survey forms. The survey is drawing to a close, so if you haven’t returned your survey forms yet please post them back by the end of this week. If you have any questions about the survey please contact Natasha Berkett, Waimea Irrigators Limited Project Manager at Natasha@waterforlife.nz. Our region has experienced a wetter than usual summer. Despite this, flows in the Wairoa River are beginning to drop. Recordings show the flow in the Wairoa River at the gorge is now only a few days away from the levels at which the first rationing cuts (20%) would be implemented, if a decision is made not to proceed with the dam. These cuts will affect all water users who do not have a permit that is affiliated to the dam, and/or shares in Waimea Irrigators Limited. In a normal year, we would see the current flows in early January, and with no significant rainfall water users would now be facing very severe restrictions. The Waimea Community Dam is seen as the best long-term (100 years), cost-effective water supply solution to the region’s water supply shortages, which have actually been occurring for many years and will only worsen under the changes soon to be implemented under the Tasman Resource Management Plan. Other options, and there are many, have been fully considered and discarded as not meeting the multiple objectives that the dam does – including security of supply for our current and future urban populations and new minimum flows in the Waimea River that the Tasman District Council must give effect to under the National Policy Statement Freshwater. Waimea Irrigators Limited is working with both councils in the region to progress the dam. The survey is a critical first step, which will be followed with the issue of a full Product Disclosure Statement and share offer around the middle of this year. Advt.

Two fires over two days: The Nelson Fire Brigade had to dampen down a fire in the scrub near Nelson Intermediate last week, the second fire set in the area in two days. Nelson Senior Station Officer Rob Allan says they were alerted to the fire at 1.50 pm on Thursday, while the day before the fire brigade responded around 2 pm. "These fires generally don’t start themselves, the one on Wednesday was deemed suspicious and this one, until proven otherwise, will also be suspicious," says Rob. Both fires were extinguished by two appliances with the second blaze just nine metres away from a house.

VIDEO of the week: Two teenagers have been arrested following a midnight altercation in which a man was stabbed in the stomach. The Fixit Café hosted an evening meal to which people could bring damaged household items to be repaired, encouraging locals to re-use items to reduce waste and save costs. By the end of the evening, among other repairs, two bikes were back on the road, several items of clothing were wearable again, and quite a bit of IT advice had been dispensed. Motorcyclist dies in crash: A motorcyclist died at the scene of a crash near Maruia on Thursday morning. Shortly after 8 am, police and emergency services attended a crash involving a motorcyclist and a fence on the Shenandoah Highway (SH65).

Two arrested after midnight stabbing: At approximately 12.15am Sunday morning, two groups became involved in a verbal and physical altercation at the corner of St Vincent and Natalie Streets. During the altercation, a 36-year-old man was stabbed once in the stomach area with a knife. He was taken to Nelson Hospital and underwent surgery and is now recovering in the ward with no life-threatening injuries. The two 18-year-old local men arrested at the scene were charged on Monday. Both men arrested are on bail and due to appear in Nelson District Court on March 6. Police have completed a scene examination and recovered a knife believed to have been involved in the incident.

Police have been completing a scene examination after midnight altercation. To keep up with the latest news visit www.nelsonlive.co.nz

A million stars to end violence Jessie Johnston The Soroptimist Club of Waimea has a big job ahead of it, weaving 500 stars for the One Million Stars to End Violence project. The initiative was started by Maryann Talia Pau in Australia, in 2012, as a response to the rape and murder of a young woman in her community. It involves weaving one million stars which will then become part of a huge installation at the Gold Coast 2018 Common-

wealth Games, which is where groups such as the Waimea Soroptimist ladies come in. The idea of creating stars was inspired by a quote by Dr Martin Luther King Jr, and word has been put out to groups around Australia and New Zealand for helping hands to complete all one million woven stars. The Soroptimist Club of New Zealand was amongst those asked to take part and each group, including the ladies from Waimea, has a target of 500 stars, to be completed be-

fore July this year. “Anti-violence is so much a part of our own goals and objectives in our organisation,” says Caroline McGee, on why the club is getting behind the project. “You do have fun while you do it and it’s also very satisfying making them,” says Gill Eyles. Anyone interested in helping The Soroptimist Club of Waimea reach 500 stars, or learning more about the group, can contact Diane Thomsen on 547 6858 or 027 247 7529.

NELSON & TASMAN SUNDAY 12 MARCH

REGISTER NOW! Have you got things you don’t want any more but aren’t worth selling? On Second Hand Sunday, people can take away the stuff you don’t want for FREE!

How does it work?

Register by going online to the Tasman District or Nelson City Council’s websites (search phrase = Second Hand Sunday). You can also call the Councils’ Customer Service Centres, Ph. Tasman 03 543 8400, Ph. Nelson 03 546 0200.

Instructions for the day are also online.

Registrations must be in by 9.00am, Thursday 9 March so Council can publish the list of addresses of people taking part on the website.

Work on the upgrade is now in full swing, and contractor Hawkins Infrastructure is working its way up the street replacing a 50-year-old cement water pipe with a new, larger and more durable pipe to deliver water to central Richmond homes and businesses. That means there are significant changes to access and parking on Queen Street itself. Please use the ring road and park and walk to Queen Street. The good news is that Queen Street’s shops and cafes/restaurants are open for business as usual. The footpath is open at all times during the day, so you can get to the shops you need to with a short walk.

What you need to know • The footpath is open to pedestrians at all times during the day. • Queen Street is closed to vehicles from Gladstone Road to the McIndoe Place intersection. • The McIndoe Place intersection may be closed for short intermittent periods. • Sections of the street are one lane at times, and the key intersections will be closed for a day when the pipe is laid across them. Please follow the instructions of Stop/Go workers.

Parking • Parking on Queen Street is limited. • There is all-day parking available at the Richmond Showgrounds on Lower Queen Street. • P60 parking is available in the Papps Carpark off Cambridge Street. • You can get to businesses in the Resene carpark – Resene, Best4Less, Dominos and Tuatara Structures – either by turning off Gladstone Road, or via Oxford Mews. • Roast House customers may park in the Resene carpark. • Parking and entry to Village Cycles, Sabai Sabai Thai Massage and Thai Noodle House is available from Oxford Mews.

Buses • Catch the NBus at its new stop opposite the Tasman District Council’s office on Queen Street. The Sundial Square bus stop is no longer in service. Visit www.nbus.govt.nz for routes and timetable information.

You can find out about other reuse options on either Council’s website, www.tasman.govt.nz or www.nelson.govt.nz

A warning for home Andrew Board A company alledgedly offering government or council subsidies on hugely inflated quotes to insulate homes in Nelson is attracting a growing number of complaints and is “likely” to be breaching the Fair Trading Act. Comfortmaster is a North Islandbased business, which according to its advertising flyers, does home heating, insulation, LED lighting, ventilation, cooling and water filtration. It has been cold-calling Nelsonians in the evening, asking if they’d like a free quote to insulate their home. Nelson Weekly has spoken with four people who invited representatives of the company into their home to quote. For each of them the initial quote was around $6500 to $7000, which works out to be around $57 per square metre. The industry standard is about $17 per square metre. The home owners were then told they were eligible for a government or council subsidy which would bring the initial quote down to around $4000, still about $30 per square metre. Nelson City Council told the

Weekly that it does not have any such subsidy or grant. EECA, the government agency which offers the subsidies for home insulation, says Comfortmaster is not one of its contracted service providers and urged people not to fall for their “bullying tactics”. But Comfortmaster says all of the residents have misunderstood the offer. It was, in fact, a discount offered by Comfortmaster because of their “superior buying power” and the over-inflated quotes were a mistake by staff. Ross Wylie, who lives on Mount St in Nelson, says he was first contacted by Comfortmaster late last year. This month he agreed to a free quote. He says the quote for his 121 square metre home was initially $7000 but that was reduced to $4071.45, “after the government discount”. But 20 square metres of his floor area was concrete and another 75 square metres was inaccessible for an installer. Meaning the area quoted should have only been around 25 square metres. Ross believes Comfortmaster are unethical because they told him he could get a government sub-

Photo: Andrew Board. sidy and the amount quoted was about eight times more than he needed to pay. “It’s very important for people to get a second quote. Very important. They’ve given a dishonest assessment when a human being couldn’t actually do the work,” he says. More concerns over quotes: Another man, who didn’t want to be identified for fear of retribution, spoke to Nelson Weekly last week just hours after he had a Comfortmaster representative at his house. He says he was offered

a government subsidy if he had a Super Gold Card, a discount card for those over 65. “They gave me a quote which was originally about $6500 or $7000, but we ended up with a figure of $3696 for this work [after the “subsidy”]. I said ‘that’s fine I’ll think about that, but in the meantime, can you give me a written quote’. Well, did that provoke some interaction. Oh no, they didn’t do written quotes, it’s not company policy and he went into a long and most unconvincing explanation of why they didn’t do

that.” He says the man who came to his house described himself as a South Island assessor for Comfortmaster and he was accompanied by a woman and an unmarked vehicle. “ The man says he was offered both a government and council discount. “It was quite clear, and why would they take my Gold Card details if they didn’t [offer it]?” Another man, called Brian, says he received a quote last year for his home in Stoke. He thought the price was “over the top” and was told that the quote was only valid for 48 hours, after which he would have to pay more, up to $1000. “I said to my wife after he left, ‘I’m not too sure about this bugger’. I didn’t see how these prices stack up and why they were pressuring you into doing it fast.” Nelson City Council has also had complaints to its staff, including a complaint from an elderly lady who had been offered a “council subsidised” insulation service. The initial quote was over $7000, but that was dropped to $4435.20 after the “subsidy” for her 90 square metre home. The quote was prepared by Comfortmaster.

mortgage his house so the club could afford new clubrooms. Roy, who was the club’s first president, from 1964 and 1988, died on Sunday at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village, aged 85. Long time friend, John White, says Roy would have done anything for his beloved club. “I’ve known Roy 47 years and I can promise you the club would not be in existence today if it wasn’t for him. “Not many people would offer to mortgage their own house for the sake of new clubrooms, so that’s the measure of the man,” John says. Richmond Athletic committee member Stu Reid says Roy was a tireless worker for football in the region and never missed a first team match until his health began to decline. “He had a great sense of humour and a very dry one at that. “He would organRoy Oddy at his beloved ise the preseason Richmond clubrooms trips to the West with his dog Sandy. Coast, Christchurch or Wellington each year and was a regular sight at plenty of our fixtures. “I remember being told that if a team was short of players, Roy would go down to the pub and ask if anyone wanted a game on Saturday,” Stu says. “I think that was back when Nelson Bays Football were more relaxed on registrations.” Roy also had several Labradors, both golden and black, named Sandy, over the years. Friend Nigel Kilpatrick says football and the Richmond club were Roy’s life. “I’ve been part of the club 35 years and every trip I’ve been on Roy has been there. “He was a helluva a nice guy who couldn’t do enough for the club. Even as he got older, he still was marking out the pitch in the morning for the young kids to play on... It’s just the kind of man he was.” Details’s of Roy’s memorial service were not available at the time of print.

THEATRE ROYAL OPEN DAY: Hayley Gibbs, left, Olivia Daniel and Stella Ferguson, on stage during the Theatre Royal open day. The idea to open the theatre up for locals to explore was launched last year and theatre staff are hoping to make it an annual event. People were given unrestricted access to the building, offering those who have only ever been audience members, ushers, or who have never even stepped foot inside the place, the chance to see it all. Theatre Royal staff were on hand to take guided tours, while others were dotted around the various areas, handing out interesting snippets of information. People even had the chance to take control of the lighting and pull the ropes that raise and lower the main curtain. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Fallen soldiers rededicated in Brightwater Jessie Johnston This coming Anzac Day people from Brightwater, Spring Grove and Waimea West will finally be able to commemorate their fallen soldiers from World War one and two, in one central place. It’s a project that the Brightwater Community Association has been hard at work on, with the rededication ceremony set for Saturday, March 18. “No one holds an Anzac service [even though] there are more names in Spring Grove than there are in Brightwater and there’s no service to remember the Waimea West ones either on Anzac day, it’s just always held here [in Brightwater], so to me they should all be in one place,” says association member, Steph McQueen. While the names of Brightwater’s fallen soldiers are located on the pillars of the memorial gate, the names from Spring Grove and Waimea West will be engraved on plaques and placed on a large stone, just behind the pillar. Those in

the association have played a big part in leading the project, however several others from the community have been quick to contribute with Wakefield Quarry supplying the stone and local contractor Malcolm McDonald providing earthworks and concreting. “It’s something that’s been talked about for a number of years, it was suggested that it be put down on the village green but then we thought no, this is probably a more appropriate place,” says Diane Drogemuller. Creating a centralised location for the area’s fallen soldiers has become even more important as Anzac Day continues to gain momentum. “There’re more and more people congregating here on Anzac Day, whereas they never used to bother about it, the kids never knew anything about it but these days they do,” says Diane. The stone will feature four plaques with a total of 70 names for both Spring Grove and Waimea West.

Volunteer firefighters work to extinguish a bus that caught fire last year on the Paton Rd switchbacks, as it was dropping kids home from school. Under the umbrella of the New Zealand Fire Service, the Tasman region includes stations in Murchison, Richmond, Wakefield, Tapawera, Upper Moutere and Mapua, while the Waimea Rural Fire Authority oversees the operation of the regions rural fire forces in Appleby, Hira, Brightwater, Nelson Lakes, Ngatimoti, Tasman, Upper Takaka, Wainui and Marahau. Although volunteer firefighters get a lot of satisfaction out of helping people and keeping their community safe, their love of the job must also be recognised and appreciated by the public for the dangers and sacrifices that are involved. These days, firefighting is just a small part of what volunteers are involved in with their training now equipping them to deal with many medical situations too. Assisting in motor vehicle accidents is a common occurrence for many stations, especially when Ambulance crews are several minutes away. A purple call out is one when a life is threatened, which is why brigades such as the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade, carry an AED and are trained in CPR. They also have other tools such as a monitoring kit so that when St John arrives, they can tell them some of the important stats such as heart rate and breathing. The role of the regions brigades varies depending on the needs of the community in which they operate. New Zealand Fire Service volunteers are equipped with a breathing apparatus allowing them to entre buildings and cutting equipment for extracting people during motor vehicle accidents. These brigades are also called

New line pricing from 1 April 2017

The prices in the table below are used to charge electricity retailers in the region served by Network Tasman. Electricity retailers determine how to allocate this cost together with the energy, metering and other retail costs when setting the retail prices that appear in your power account. Network Tasman’s prices cover the cost of its local distribution network and the cost of national transmission of electricity. Network Tasman’s distribution price component will be increasing by 0.75%, but this will be offset by a reduction in the transmission price component. Overall, there is no change to Network Tasman’s total price. Understanding the table below: Most residential consumers and some small businesses (those who have supplies with a maximum delivery capacity of 15kVA) are Group 1 consumers. Library books to be works of art Jessie Johnston Forget the usual appeals to treat books with care, Richmond Library is inviting people to enter their book art competition and let their imaginations run wild on old, discontinued library books. This is the first time the library has hosted the competition and they are looking forward to seeing the results come April. “We’ve seen examples of altered book art out there in the world over the last few years and it seems to be picking up as a trend in art,” says Richmond Library’s Ruth Lawley. “We thought that it fitted with the library. We’re always telling our customers to look after the books but we do regularly remove books from the collection that aren’t being used, so this is a great way to recycle them and make them beautiful.” Those wishing to take part in the competition simply need to pop into the library to pick up an entry form and an old disused library book, then it’s up to them to give their book a new lease on life. There are three categories to enter into, best use of paper crafts, best use of three dimensional elements and best entry that relates to the story in the book used. Entrants must be over 16 years of age and the finished article must be no bigger than 36cm wide and 30cm high, other than that, there are no limits on people’s creativity. “Feel free to cut, glue, paint, collage – do whatever you like to the book you’ve been allocated and create a work of art. We have a great selection of craft books at Richmond Library if you’re looking for inspiration,” says promotions assistant, Pania Konecna. Entries are open until April 26, after which they will be displayed in the library’s glass cabinets until June 6. The competition will be judged by a panel of three including an artist, an art teacher and a library staff member. The winner from each category will receive a prize thanks to the generosity of PaperPlus Richmond, Impressions Picture Framers and Art Supplies, and Take Note Takaka.

As well as excelling in the world of real estate, Mike Pero Richmond and Nelson are also hugely supportive of the community, thanks to the Mike Pero Foundation. This initiative was set up in order to make a difference to

people’s lives, whether they are suffering from illness or are in a tough place financially. The assistance provided by the foundation could be a special experience or it could be special assistance for those with serious medical conditions. The money used to achieve this is raised through Mike Pero business owners like Craig and Kellie, and their sales people. “Locally, we’ve given away a lot of money and that comes from all of our sales, it gets distributed back into the Nelson com-

Veteran happy to 'earn' his place Jacob Page At 51-years-old, Darryn Cunningham is happy to earn his place in Richmond Athletic’s first XI. While many may consider sliding down the grades for a more social time in football, Darryn is happy to put in the hard yards in preseason training and earn his spot in the heart of the midfield. Darryn first had a taste of senior football as a teenager. At 17, in the mid-80s, he was playing National League football, marking the late All Whites captain, Steve Sumner. “I remember leaving stud marks on Steve Sumner’s chest. Then,

three seasons later, he poleaxed me in a challenge, stood over me, and said ‘that’s for what you did three seasons ago’, smiled and helped me up." Darryn came through the Nelson Suburbs junior grades and then went to Nelson United for their colts and national league opportunities. “I had Napier City approach me to come and play and an offer to play in Australia, but I was a young kid from Nelson just enjoying life." Darryn has been on both sides of the Nelson Suburbs and Richmond rivalry, but he’s enjoying his time at Richmond. “I like the relaxed atmosphere

Darryn Cunningham is preparing for another season of first team football with Richmond at age 51. Photo: Jacob Page. and there are two coaches in Steve [Clark] and Matt [Campbell] that I’d run through a brick wall

for at 51." Darryn thinks the Richmond side he was part of last year didn’t handle the swings in momentum of the league season. “Back in my day, when you lost you sulked for six days until you got to play again on the seventh. “The young ones these days don’t seem as bothered by it.” Darryn has questioned whether his time in the first team had come and gone, but he believes he still has plenty to offer. “I think that I don’t have many seasons left and if someone wants my spot they can earn it, and if they do I’ll sit on the bench and say well done.” He says he's not ready for masters

football yet and that he still has the desire to compete at the highest level in Nelson. “I’m still think I’m very competitive, I don’t mind training and I have the body that allows me to do it." Darryn’s son Isaac has transferred from Richmond to FC Nelson this season. He says he's looking forward to playing against him after a year on the same side in 2016. “I hope he scores a hat-trick... but that we win 4-3. But I can tell you for sure he won’t be scoring three goals, because I’ll be marking him.” The Nelson Bays Football first division season kicks off on April 1.

Four wickets in a row for Findlay Young Jacob Page Waimea College all rounder Findlay Young produced four wickets in four balls duringa Twenty20 fixture on Friday and he did it all himself. The 16-year-old Waimea College first XI cricketer took the “double hat-trick” during a match against Nayland College. The quadruple

wicket maiden came in his third over on his way to five for eight for the innings, all wickets were bowled and, oddly enough, he didn’t get another over. The right-arm medium pace bowler also contributed with the bat, opening the innings and making 38 in a losing effort. “The whole thing was a quite a surprise because we weren’t going well. It was

the 18th over and I managed to bowl the first guy who was going really well. The hat-trick ball made him a bit nervous. “I was worried I was going to bowl a wide, I just wanted to bowl it full and straight and get it on the wickets. I’ve never got a hat-trick before so it was something new. Findlay says he first started

playing the game through Milo cricket. He says his older brother was a key influence in getting him into the game. He’s also had prominent teachers and family friends who have all shaped his style of play. Findlay says while he has taken seven for 21 in the past, he says this ball will hold special significance for him.

Snapper prove elusive in Tasman Bay Snapper fishing has been quite patchy in Tasman Bay over the past couple of weeks, with some days producing good catches, while other days have been a real struggle to get any snapper to bite. Large schools of kahawai are present right throughout Tasman Bay at the moment, but particularly along the boulder bank, Cable and Delaware Bays. Underneath these big schools of kahawai the Cook Strait sailfish are still hanging around in big numbers, ready to put a dent in your tackle supplies. Spear fisherman are reporting that juvenile kingfish have arrived in large numbers throughout the bay, but particularly at the offshore mussel farms and off the Glen. It is a real struggle to find any legal-sized fish in amongst the large schools but bigger fish are still out there for those who persevere, with large live baits resulting in some good fish for several Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members recently. Water temperatures have increased with the late arrival of some more stable, warm summer weather, but tuna have still remained absent from wider parts of Tasman and Golden Bays.

Former Waimea College pupil Jeremy Webb secured his fifth South Island Three Quarter Midget title in six years with a commanding display at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night. Jeremy, now based in Christchurch, was always going to be the car to catch, and while it’s been a mixed season for him, when on form he is unstoppable. Starting on pole position for the first qualifying heat he led from start to finish. He was off the back in his second heat and cruised home in second place knowing he had pole f o r t h e 25 lap

It sent the car sharply left into the path of Morgan Frost. Alicia MacLauchlan was unlucky, having been relegated two spots in the opening heat after finishing second. She was left to chase the Cantabrians in the feature to finish in fourth overall. Kyle Glover and Liam McCoubrey were left to fight over the other podium positions. Kyle lost power steering which made turning the car pretty hard in the dying laps. The side cars fronted with 10

Curtis Washington, one of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants’new imports, says he can see he made the right choice in coming to Nelson. The big man and current Guam international says he was in talks with multiple National Basketball League teams, but believes he will fit right in at the top of the South Island. He, along with fellow Americanbased import Joe Slocum and coach Alan McAughtry, arrived in Nelson last week and training is already underway with Nelson-based players like captain Sam Dempster, Bronson Berri, Ali Grainger, Riley Bensemann and Tom Ingham. Curtis, who was recruited by former Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning before he left to be an assistant coach in Israel, says he knew after two days he made the right decision. “I was talking to a few (NBL) teams but Tim said I’d really enjoy it. Curtis has mobility and the ability to sheet the mid range and threepoint shot and his post moves will be crucial. Most importantly, both guys have turned up fit and ready to go.” The Giants open their NBL season on the road against the Southland Sharks on March 16.

The doors are open - come behind the scenes at Port Nelson

Classic boat event reservation and speed limit uplift

Community Open Day, Sunday 5 March, from 10.00 am – 4.00 pm

The NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show will be held at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti on 4 and 5 March. • Other lake users are encouraged to use the ramp and beaches of West Bay for access during the event. Communications are over VHF channel 17.

The port handles hundreds of thousands of tonnes of produce from Tasman District destined for export markets each year – including apples, wine, timber and more. Head along to the open day to discover the new 13,000m2 logistics facility, take a trip on guided bus tours, see the brand new Toia tugboat and check out the heavy equipment display by highly skilled staff. There will also be plenty of interactive games and prizes for the kids, and food trucks to buy lunch and snacks. As the maritime gateway for Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough, the port has welcomed visitors and commercial operators, and been the gateway for our produce to reach world export markets, for more than 170 years. Port Nelson encourages people from across the region to make a special day trip for the triennial event. Bring a gold coin to support the Port’s charity Big Brothers Big Sisters. Rain or shine – please come along! Parking is available on Wildman Ave and through the entry on the corner of Wildman Ave and Low Street.

• People wishing to waterski should perform deep water starts outside of the reserved area while the reservation is in force. • Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz/recreation/boating-fishing/ special-events-and-activities Further details for these and any new events are online at tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events.

At the beginning of ordinary meetings up to 30 minutes is set aside for public forum. Each speaker is allocated five minutes. You don’t need to pre-register your intention to speak – just take your turn when invited by the chairperson. These presentations don’t form part of the formal business of the meeting – a brief record will be kept of the matters raised. Any matters requiring further investigation may be referred to staff by the Chairperson.
