Simon Bloomberg Shay Roberts made a new best friend last week when she jumped a fence to rescue a frightened dog from the flames at a garage fire at Three Brothers Corner near Richmond. Emergency services were called to the fire at 30 Appleby Highway at around 2.30pm on Thursday after the occupants of the house phoned 111. It took four crews about 20 minutes to control the blaze that destroyed the garage and threatened to spread to the nearby house on the property. But the real drama had already unfolded before the fire crews arrived. Shay, who was working in a field behind the property, ran to the rescue of two dogs that were in danger of suffering serious burns from the blaze.

The home building industry around Nelson and Tasman is “pumping” with many building companies taking on extra staff to keep up with demand and prospective buyers willing to wait more than 12 months before they can move into their new homes. “There’re not enough hours in the day, or days in week, to keep up,” Milestone Homes Nelson Bays regional manager Adam Hills says. “I’ve been with Milestone for seven years and I’ve never known anything like it - the industry is absolutely pumping.” Adam says Milestone presently has

“15 houses under contract” and has just employed another five builders to keep up with the demand. He says many buyers are signing contracts for new homes on subdivisions that are still being developed and haven’t got titles and as a result have to wait up to a year or more to move in. Simon Collett of Home Living Solutions says they are presently developing six subdivisions for over 150 new homes in Nelson and Tasman and they are “pre-selling everything”. Home Living Solutions manages the complete home building process from land development through to design and build.

“People are grabbing sections and waiting 12 months. We are selling sections that won’t even have a title by Christmas.” Adam and Simon both say the demand for new homes is a direct result of the housing market being put under pressure by people moving into Nelson from the bigger centres. Adam says the gap between the price of old and new homes is also narrowing, making new homes a more affordable option. GJ Gardner Homes Nelson-Tasman franchise owner Graham Vercoe says

they have been “very busy” since early to midlast year when demand for new homes started increasing. “I don’t think we are in a boom but we very busy,” Graham says. “What we are seeing is related immigration and a flow out of the some of the larger centres where it is less affordable to build a house.” “We have 30 homes under construction and are on track to build about 62 homes this year. But that’s well within the capacity of the company because we have very good contractors and suppliers.” Simon says the buoyant new home market is good news for the region, employing hundreds of tradespeople and suppliers. “I went out to our Langdale Grove subdivision the other day and there were tradies’ vehicles double-parked everywhere. I’d hate to think how many people are working on new homes around the region,” he says.

Name of new harbourmaster’s boat picked by Richmond and Mapua men Simon Bloomberg It was a case of great minds thinking alike for Richmond’s Steven Bosecke and Mapua’s John Leydon, after they both came up with the best name for the Tasman district’s harbourmasters’ new boat that was launched at Port Motueka on Monday. The Tasman District Council ran a competition to find the name for the new boat which replaces Legato which has been retired after 15 years and more than 7500 hours on the water. John and Steven both suggested the boat should be named Sentinel because of the harbourmaster’s role in watching over the safety of boaties, and harbourmaster Dan Cairney and the rest of the boatnaming panel judged agreed. Dan says there was a wide range of names suggested by the public, and the naming panel, made up of six council representatives and an iwi representative, had a tough job selecting a winner. “There were some really great names, ranging from those with special connections to Tasman’s waters or history, to some that were meaningful in terms of the work the harbourmaster does.” The competition attracted about 100 entries with names including

Tasman district Harbourmaster Dan Cairney, left, and Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and his wife Jane aboard Sentinel at the boat’s official launching on Monday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Kaitiaki (Maori for guardian) and Uruao, which was the name of the first Polynesian canoe to land in Nelson. Entries from schoolchildren included Fast Kingfisher (because Kingfishers are as fast as speedboats) and Jet (because it looks like a speedy boat). Steven says he liked Sentinel be-

cause it “emphasises the role of the harbourmaster as a guard, a shepherd, a protector for users of our beautiful waters”. John’s entry says the name shows the harbourmaster is “guarding our region”, while being a “distinctive call-sign for radio work”. Dan says Sentinel has modern electronics including a thermal

imaging camera to assist with search and rescue operations at night. The Harbourmaster patrols 238km of coastline between Farewell Spit and Rabbit Island, undertaking boating safety education and enforcement, attending maritime events and maintaining navigation aids.

Parts of Tasman set for 1080 drop Parts of the Tasman District are being targeted for aerial drops of 1080 this spring to control the expected “plague” numbers of rats, mice and stoats. Like 2014, this year is expected to be a beech mast event, where huge amounts of seed fall to the forest floor. This sees a huge increase in the number of pests, including mice, rats and stoats. When the seed runs out, the pests target native wildlife. The Department of Conservation says, among the areas of the threat are land west and south of Nelson and they will drop 1080 if monitoring shows the increase in pests. But the local branch of the Deer Stalkers Association says locals should have their say on the drop and is urging its members to make a submission to DOC as part of its consultation process with the Deer Stalkers Association and Game Animal Council. The areas likely to be targeted include the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi, Mokihinui and Nelson Lakes East.

Community groups granted wine and food cash

Community groups will want to break out the bubbly to celebrate, after the money raised from the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival was dished out this week. The major winners from this year’s festival – which was held at Middle-Earth Vineyard in February – were the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter ($4000), Fifeshire Foundation ($4000) and the Nelson Women’s Refuge ($2000). Richmond Rotary, which organises the event, announced the allocation of funds at Club Waimea on Monday night. President of the club, Wendy Herrick, says

seven groups were donated money. “This year we wanted to mix it up a bit, recognising that there were many people who needed help in our region, and they wanted to ‘help those who helped those in need’ and this year’s recipients were a true representation of those groups.” A lot of local groups help Rotary with the organisation of Brightwater Wine and Food Festival, and with help on the day. Once again Wanderers Sports Club, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, Brightwater School and Brightwater Rural Fire Force will have funds distributed to them.

New mum course, Wednesday, May 18: A $6000 grant from the Nelson Bays Community Foundation has given the Nelson District Parents Centre a boost, meaning they can now offer their new-mum course – called ‘Baby and You,’ for free. Since the article was published in the Weekly, Michelle Hunt from the Parents Centre says they have had lots of people sign up for the course. “The current course is full we got three people sign up straight away,” says Michelle. “The July course is half full already, and someone has even booked into the September course, so it’s really good.” Michelle says that are also going to be mailing out posters to doctors clinics, midwives and the hospital to help promote the course. Lions Club of Richmond, Wednesday, April 20: The Lions Club of Richmond was thrilled to receive three offers of wood for their firewood fundraiser after their article in the Waimea Weekly. Once the group is donated a collection of trees, they do all the work to fell them, split the wood and dry it before selling it to raise money for charitable causes within the community. Our museum celebrates its own 175 year history

Brittany Spencer

The adults may have celebrated the Nelson Provincial Museum’s 175th birthday on Thursday night, but when Saturday rolled around it was the kids’ turn. The museum was filled with painted faces and chubby toddler fingers grasping balloon animals tightly at the museum’s Family Fun Day. The kids had the run of the museum with face painting, a clown, balloons and art competitions that are being displayed proudly in the museum windows. The museum’s chief executive, Lucinda Blackley-Jimson, says it was a fun day and the staff and kids all got into it. “It was lovely seeing kids running around the streets of Nelson afterwards with their balloons and smiling, painted faces,” she says. “Our front of house staff really got into it and there’s been a real buzz with all the celebrations. “We had so many children, parents and caregivers come

We want to make the museum a really accessible place for the community to come, particularly the young ones.” As New Zealand’s oldest museum, the Nelson Provincial Museum is the first in the country to reach this impressive milestone. “We’re really excited,” say Lucinda. “It’s a great honour to be New Zealand’s oldest museum and its an exciting legacy to bring forward into the future.”

The idea for the museum was conceived by one of the early Pakeha settlers from England who started collecting items for the museum and library and grew it into the collections we know today. For the slightly more mature celebrations on Thursday night, the museum was open late for a talk on Nelson’s Underbelly, speeches on the museum’s history, a birthday cake was cut and there was a performance from Nelson’s Mosaic choir.

Smokers need to keep quitting Simon Bloomberg If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And if that doesn’t work, Nelson Hospital Quit Coach Sarah McKenzie says smokers need to try at least another six or seven times because that’s about how many attempts it takes some people to quit. It’s World Smokefree Day this Tuesday and Sarah says the staff at Nelson Hospital are doing their bit to try and encourage the 9288 smokers in Nelson and Tasman to kick the habit. Although smoking rates in the region have declined from 20.7 per cent in 2006 to 15.1 per cent in 2013, Sarah says there’s still a long way to go before reaching the target of a Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025. Sarah says research indicates that at least eight out of every 10 people who smoke regret starting, while one in two smokers had made a quit attempt in the last year. However, she says it’s important for smokers to realise that anyone who is motivated enough to try and quit is on the right track and that “it’s not a failure and not to give up”. “It’s not uncommon for people to try eight or 10 times to give up,” she says. “It’s very rare for me to meet someone who says ‘this is the first time I’ve tried to quit’.” However, Sarah says the key to success is ensuring that smokers get the support so that “they can give it their best shot”. If people try quit without support, she says they are simply setting themselves up “not to succeed”.

Nelson Hospital Quit Coach Sarah McKenzie. “We know 42 per cent of people surveyed who tried to quit smoking last year, did so without any medication or support. When they do this and try to quit cold turkey on their own, the quit rate is about four per cent. “When people use a medication like the nicotine products, Zyban , Nortriptyline or Champix, the quit rate at least doubles and adding in support as well at least doubles it again.” Sarah says the best way to get support is through a GP or by phoning Quitline on 0800778778, which now provides a 24-7 service. The staff at Nelson Hospital also play a key role in delivering the smokefree message, offering advice and support to more than 95 percent of known smokers who are treated in the hospital. Sarah says the cost of these support therapies is negligible and, in some cases, are subsidised.

Donation helps to fuel foodbank volunteers

Kate Russell Volunteers at a Nelson foodbank are now fuelled up for the rest of the year, thanks to a donation from the Nelson Bays Community Foundation (NBCF). The Nelson Community Foodbank Trust has received a $6000 grant from the foundation, to assist with the cost of supplying fuel vouchers to volunteers. The NBCF formed a partnership with the Tindall Foundation last year, aimed at supporting the family and social services sector across the top of the South Island. They announced their first funding round late last month of four donations, totalling $28,000. The foodbank provides support and assistance to families and individuals experiencing shortterm financial hardship, and works in collaboration with social service agencies such as The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and Nelson Budget Service. Nearly 30 volunteers race around town delivering food parcels five days a week to approved applicants, using their own vehicles and time. Food bank coordinator Mike Gibson says the vouchers will be hugely appreciated, with volunteers clocking up around 15,000km in mileage every year around Nelson and Stoke. “Our volunteers should get some reimbursement for mileage, as some do clock up a bit,” says Mike. “It’s definitely needed.” Mike says that the demand for food parcels goes up and down, and in the last 12 months they have delivered 1500 parcels. Forty hours a week of voluntary work goes into the operation, which Mike says equates to $600 worth of voluntary work every week on minimum wage. And it’s not just a Nelson affair. He says they receive fruit from Ruby Bay and donations from the Hope Community Church. “We get very well supported,” says Mike. Chair of the Nelson Bays Community Foundation, Julie Varney, says they wanted to recognise the valuable contribution that the foodbank makes in the community. “The service is heavily reliant on volunteers who deliver the food parcels. This funding grant will provide petrol vouchers to the volunteers who use their own vehicles and help ensure the ongoing viability of the service,” she says. The next round under the funding partnership closes 16 August 2016 and details of the application criteria can be found on tindall.org.nz and nbcf.org.nz.

Your Voice Rowing course at Rabbit Island? Ken Beck, a former County Engineer, warned against such a development with good reason. The effects downstream could be very negative to such a delicate ecosystem. Leave it as is and row in the Nelson harbour. John Sauer. Better get in quick before they try to build a mountainbike track. Phil Prentice. Nice to see keen promotion of facilities to help local sport. We have friends but no vested interest in Twizel. We are concerned that the Nelson Rowing Club plan aims to take the Maadi Cup away from Twizel. Nelson and Tasman are gifted areas that have won a lot of great attractions. It might be nice to have all the toys in our local toy box but this should not be at someone else’s expense. Sometimes enough is enough. Losing the Maadi Cup would be a major loss to Twizel. The Twizel community have worked hard over the years to support the Maadi Cup and use their Lake Ruataniwha facility. Sporting success these days sometimes seems to be less about actual sport and more about bed-night dollars. Contrary to local lore, Nelson is not the centre of the universe and Twizel is on the same planet and more accessible for Christchurch and Dunedin teams. Rowing teams have managed to get to Twizel before. South Island communi-

ties should not undermine each other. Ken and Gail Lefever, Richmond. Redundancies at Higgins: ‘A small percentage of employees will lose their jobs.’ Twelve out of 50 is almost 25 per cent, not a small percentage on any scale. Caroline Mew. These companies are slow to finish jobs and it’s no wonder, minimum workers and maximum workload. Rayon Mackenzie. Rabbit Island shouldn’t lose tracks: [The column by Simon Bloomberg in Waimea Weekly] was well stated. A jewel in the crown of Nelson, please do not stop us running, walking and riding around Moturoa/Rabbit Island. Murray Turner. Natureland gets welfare accreditation: Well done, everyone. Great achievement. Janelle Thorpe. Well done to you all, go team. Barb Wastney. We love taking Lewis here. So close to home and we always have great fun. Well done. Marion Woodward. It’s a lovely place. Corina Smith.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz facebook.com/waimeaweekly www.nelsonlive.co.nz A third Nelsonians with measles: And to think when we were kids, our parents used to rush us round to that kid to ensure we got our dose of it and got over it. Belinda Exton. Mmmm I had measles as a child after being fully immunised! Guess what, I didn’t die!!!! PK Bee. Forty years ago it was encouraged to expose kids to measles when they were young, what is the problem now? Sue Baigent. Fluoride in water: I am trying to get my head around two contradictory news items. One is, Asian countries can sell our NZ water very profitably because it is known to be free of industrial chemicals. The other is, the Nelson Marlborough DHB wants to lace our water supply with fluorosilicic acid, otherwise just called fluoride. This is an extremely toxic industrial waste product. DHB proposes to add this toxin to our drinking water supply , for dubious scientific reasons, thus making the water unexportable. China certainly won’t want any water with fluoride in it, as they prohibit its use in water supplies. There is a strong contradiction here. Our DHB can expect strong public opposition to this action. Wakefield School receives science fund Jessie Johnston Reporter

jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Council, the school is working to rid the area of invasive weeds and repopulate the space with native plants. At present the children are involved with planting, pest control, weed control and thanks to the help of the science fund, will soon be monitoring a stream that runs deeper into the bush,” says Wakefield School principal, Peter Verstappen. “We’ve only got one world, that’s really what it comes down to, and we want the next generation to be, hopefully, a little better than what we’ve been at taking care of it. We’re [also] taking advantage of our environment here. We have this stunning opportunity to engage with the natural world

in our own backyard, so why wouldn’t we? “If we can’t grow environmentally conscious and environmentally skilful kids here, then who can? Peter says most of the fund, which is just under $1400, will go towards equipment including spades, shovels, a wheel barrow, stakes and shade cloth to protect trees and the stream monitoring kits, which will be used to gather practical information on the stream for use by the council or the restoration society. “It’s not great sums of money and you might look at it and think ‘well these are all fairly small scale items’, but schools run on tight budgets and these sorts of programs are always additional to the basics but they’re the ones where you often make the greatest gains,” says Peter.

After successfully applying for a national science fund, Wakefield School is better equipped than ever to continue its Faulkner Bush ecology program. The Bayer Primary School Science Fund, sponsored by Bayer Chemicals and administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand, is available every year for primary schools to apply for. This year Wakefield School was amongst many who received funds for their science programs. The school had to submit a proposal, which in turn had to focus on an environmental project the school is involved in. Wakefield School’s project centres on the green heart of Wakefield village, Faulkner Bush, a section of which borders the school. Ruth and Bob Wardrop have almost accomplished two impressive milestones - by the end of June they will both have turned 90 and in October this year they will be celebrating 68 years of marriage. Ruth’s birthday was on May 15 while Bob is only 23 days behind, on June 8, although both enjoyed a combined 180th birthday celebration with friends and family on May 14. Their love story is one of a city boy and a country girl and couldn’t be more perfect, starting all the way back in 1926, with Bob in Dunedin and Ruth living in Whangamoa. While Ruth spent her childhood sliding down hills on a wooden tobogan, fishing at Whangamoa Beach and walking three and a half miles to school, Bob was terrorising the back streets of Dunedin in a trolley his dad made, with a friend looking out for any “old ladies” coming up the road. “I’d go roaring down the path, I was a bit of a menace,” laughs Bob. “I had to leave school after form four. There was a war on and I was living with my aunt and uncle and I thought that it was about time I went out and earned my own living, so I got a job in the office of the Otago Daily Times, I didn’t like office work but I stuck it out for two and a half years.” Ruth on the other hand had ambitions of being a teacher but everyone was leaving school

Your Family’s Health vs Your Money When someone in your family is diagnosed with a serious illness you have three choices; 1. Wait until they can be treated in the public system, (can be 6 months +++) and hope they survive long enough to receive the treatment. 2. Pay for the treatment, (drugs, surgery, hospitalisation) and hope you don’t need to mortgage your house. 3. Plan ahead, pay a little bit now and get treatment when you need it at no extra cost!

my accent that did not impress his future wife. When he returned to New Zealand, he was adamant he wouldn’t return to Dunedin, opting instead for Nelson’s sunny climate. He successfully applied to a Nelson carpentry school and put an advertisement in the local paper for a ‘Christian boy seeking board in a Christian home’. “I got two replies, the one at Atawhai was much nicer, I didn’t even know they had a daughter,” says Bob. At first they only met at meal times, then they accompanied each other to dances, before finally getting married in 1948. Four children later and having called a number of places home, including Blenheim, Motueka, Atawhai and Australia, Bob and Ruth say they are still enjoying life and marriage, their winning recipe including “tolerance, unselfishness and a foundation on Jesus Christ”, says Bob.

(Fun)draising voyages around D'Urville to raise $40,000 Simon Bloomberg

Rotary Cluib of Motueka members Peter Fry, left, and Graeme Eade, second left, with Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle's Mark Burnaby, second right, and Keith Knapp beside Crusader at Port Motueka. Photo: Simon Bloomberg

Four charities will benefit from a "unbelievably generous gesture" by Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles and their staff who are donating their boat and time to take 400 people on a fundraising voyage around D'Urville Island. Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles' managing director Keith Knapp approached the Rotary Club of Motueka about the fundraising project last month, offering his company's flagship vessel Crusader and its crew for four days of sailing. Crusader will take 100 passengers on each of four voyages from Nelson around D'Urvillle Island, potentially raising $40,000 for the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital and Rotary Oceania Medical

Aid for Children. "The boat is just sitting there in the winter and very few people have been around D'Urville, so a charity cruise around the island seemed like a good idea," Keith says. "All our staff will be volunteering their time and Sir Peter (Talley) is donating the fuel, so everything will be going to charity." Rotary's Peter Fry says "it's an unbelievably generous gesture" and they jumped at the chance to help organise the voyages. He says Rotary will be paying for all the advertising and promotion as well as helping out on the four voyages. Peter says he wasn't surprised by Keith's offer "because that's just the way he is". Although Keith is not a Rotary member, Rotary made him a Paul Harris Fellow for his contribution to tourism and the community in 2013. Crusader is designed and built for the local sea conditions and operates in the Abel Tasman National Park throughout the summer months. It has great viewing areas, a small café and bar that serves coffee, tea, cold drinks and light snacks. The voyages cost $100 per person and will be held on Saturday June 25, Sunday June 26, Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3. Cruises will depart from Port Nelson at 9am and will return sometime around 4pm, and will stop for an hour at the D’Urville Island Wilderness Resort located in Catherine Cove. The resort's cafe is providing seafood chowder, rolls, tea and coffee for $18 per person and this needs to be reserved at the time of booking. Passengers can take their own picnics as well. Bookings are essential and can be made by contacting the Motueka i-Site at 20 Wallace St, Motueka on 03 528 0176 or by emailing info@ motuekaisite.co.nz. Any cancellations will be advised on the website abeltasmanseashuttles.co.nz at 8am on the day of sailing.

Wanderers to host Tasman semi-final

Table-topping Wanderers will have home advantage tonight for the first Tasman Trophy semi final. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers maintained its unbeaten start to the season when it tipped over Waitohi at Brightwater on Saturday, 19-5. Wanderers will return to the Brightwater Domain at 7.30pm tonight [Wednesday] to battle Marlborough side Moutere.

Wanderers coach Todd Bavin says his team is in good shape heading into the clash. “We had a good training on Monday night and we were happy with our performance on Saturday so we’re looking forward to it. Any time you get an opportunity to play any type of final football you’re excited.” Todd says one big loss is that of star mid-fielder Trael Joass, who was concussed on Saturday.

“It’s a huge loss for us. He’s a leader and one of our senior players and any time you lose someone like that it leaves a hole. But in saying that we have a few players back, all it takes is for our other leaders to lift five per cent to fill the gap.” The winner of the match will face the winner of the other semi-final, between Marist and Nelson, in the Tasman Trophy final at Trafalgar Park on Queen’s Birthday Monday.

Runners make a splash Waimea College’s Bridie Edwards and Beth Versey dominated the senior girl’s race at the Tasman Secondary School cross-country champs held on a water-logged Rabbit Island last Wednesday. Bridie shot clear at the start of the twolap race and went onto win easily in 15 minutes 11 seconds with Beth 45 seconds back in second. Waimea also featured in the year 9 boy’s race with Jack Danielsen-Watts

winning ahead of team-mate Luke Clathworthy to help their school secure the three and six-person team’s competitions. Waimea’s Alice Rozga was fifth in the year 9 girls race while multi-sport athlete Cameron Jones was sixth behind a strong field of specialist runners in the senior boy’s event. Garin College’s Jared Lautenslager won the senior boy’s race in a fast 19min 41sec.

There are not many sports where you can choke someone out and then accept a friend request from them on Facebook. Nelson Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exponent Mikey Bloomfield won a gold medal at the Auckland Championships by winning his four fights by tap out, including a rear naked choke and a shoulder submission called the Kimura lock The 23-year-old has tried almost every martial arts discipline, but the middleweight settled on BJJ because of the many ways he could beat an opponent. “I was hoping I could win gold, but I wanted to test myself against the best in the country and that’s certainly what you get at an Auckland regionals.” Mikey says the mat-based nature of the sport appealed to him but the friendships keep him in the game.

Nelson Brazilian jiu-jitsu exponent Mikey Bloomfield won gold at the Auckland championships by winning all of his fights by tap out. Photo: Jacob Page "All the guys I fought were really nice and now we are friends on Facebook, which is cool." Mikey says the ability to control your breathing can be important during a five minute bout and he studied fighters in the lead-up to his contests to see if he could pick up any hints about their style. The sport is a martial art based around self-defence and Mikey is keen to keep going through the grades.

Mikey trains with about 25 others at Club Italia on Trafalgar St, which is now the new home of Nelson’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene. Mikey says the training is about skill rather than attempting to hurt or injure an opponent, and the exposure the martial art is getting through the Ultimate Fighting Championship is a bonus for the club. “BJJ is truly international and is just starting to get popular with people.”

the season we played the game the right way, we’ll walk out with our heads held high. The character of the players is superb, I will miss going to training with these guys. “And the fans this year have been fantastic, one of our advantages is our home court. Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of that, but I think one of the reasons we start so good is the energy in the building, the players feel it.” After the game on Saturday, Tim and his players went and shook the hands of every person on a sponsors’ table. He says they understand that without the fans and sponsors, there is no team.

Tim says the highlights of the season for him include a return to playing at the Trafalgar Centre, the win over Southland in Invercargill, which he says was their most complete performance, the first home game which the Giants won, and the last-second win over Taranaki in New Plymouth. While 2016 didn’t end how he wanted, Tim says he’ll be back next year. “Unfortunately, you can’t win a championship every season but I’ll be doing my best to make sure we can bring one to Nelson next season.”

Finn Delany’s strong form for the Giants has seen him named in the Tall Blacks squad to play in the Olympic Qualifiers.

“We came out very focused and playing fantastic basketball and then we hit a tough patch in the middle,” he says. “As much as it hurts, the game on Saturday was a representation of the whole season for us. Our ability to play championship basketball but an inability to sustain it for the whole game.” For the record, at the end of the first quarter the Giants were up 26-14, after earlier being up 24-9. At half time the sides were tied but then the Saints went marching on, leading 72-64 at three quarter time and eventually winning the game 96-83. “It was really frustrating; it was really similar to the game last week,” says Tim. “It’s frustrating, but it’s sports.” Captain Sam Dempster says it wasn’t the way the team wanted to finish the season. “It was tough, it’s always tough to lose a game like that. We had a good first half, we got into it, we knew they’d come back and it hurts, but we gave it everything we’ve got.” He says the Giants let some opportunities throughout the season slip, but it wasn’t through a lack of effort. While Tim was disappointed that they had exited the competition, he says every other aspect of the team has been a pleasure. “Throughout

It was a season-defining game and a game that summed up the Giants season: great first quarter, solid second quarter, terrible third quarter and not-enough-to-bringit-back in the fourth quarter. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants’ loss to the Wellington Saints at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night ended its season by missing the cut for the playoffs. A win would have seen them qualify. The game, in front of a packed “hangar”, saw the Giants follow their season’s script perfectly – unfortunately for coach Tim Fanning, it wasn’t the script he wrote.

Junior netball numbers in Nelson are on the rise under the watch of Dayna Whiting. Netball Nelson's development officer has been in the role for just over a year and in that time junior teams have increased from 82 to 104. Dayna has also completed her Netball New Zealand coaching accreditation which will mean she can run more courses in the coming weeks. Dayna says the work NNZ is putting in to give coaches and players the tools to enjoy the game are behind the rise. "A lot of the material that we are being given for us to teach the kids is really great and that gets kids excited about netball," she says. Mainland Tactix coach development manager Jen Hooper, who oversaw Dayna's coaching qualification, says Nelson is fortunate to have Dayna implementing Netball New Zealand's junior strategy. "Dayna is really passionate and committed to netball in Nelson and Nelson Netball is fortunate to have someone of her quality, who grew up in the area, doing the role." Dayna's role is a part-time one at 25 hours a week but she says she enjoys going into schools and giving students a taste of netball.

Simon Bloomberg Richmond’s Andrew Drummond recalls playing alongside one of Tasman’s top golfers Hamish Campbell in his first Waimea Championships at Greenacres as a 13-yearold rookie in 2011. Five years later Andrew, who plays on a three-handicap, will be one of the top contenders in this year’s Taylor Timbers Waimea Championships to be played at Greenacres on June 4 and 5. Andrew is one of about 80 golfers entered in the 36-hole stroke play champs which started in 1940 and is one of the longest running tournaments in the country. “I remember the first time I played, I was in a four with Hamish Campbell,” Andrew says. “I was only 13 so I was really nervous. “But I’m looking forward to this year’s champs. The course is getting a lot better after the rain so it should be playing well.” Tournament director Mat’e Crins says the championship has attracted some of the region’s top golfers including

Mat’e says the championship has been won by some top

golfers over the years, including New Zealand’s top ranked amateur, Greenacres’ Ryan Chisnall, who took the title in 2013. Debbie Smith won the tournament an incredible 17 times from 1978 to 2002 while J B Ross showed plenty

of longevity by winning in 1940 and again in 1968. Mat’e says anyone interested in a late entry can contact the pro-shop at Greenacres on 5446441. The champs tee off at 10am on Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5.

Waimea Old Boys RFC Late penalty sinks Waimea semi hopes www.wobrfc.co.nz

Simon Bloomberg

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys’ coach Mark Milne wants to put a frustrating finish to the NPD Tasman Trophy behind them and “work really hard” to finish the Car Company Nelson Bays division one competition on a high. Waimea Old Boys just missed out on the semi-finals of the Tasman Trophy after suffering an upset 17-16 loss to 11th-placed

Renwick at Renwick Domain last Saturday afternoon. Waimea finished the round-robin stage of the competition on 28 points, just one behind fourth-placed Moutere on 29. Although Waimea played “really well” against Renwick, Mark says they were beaten by some poor officiating. “All we ask for is a fair and equal chance to win the game and we didn’t get that,” Mark says. “I don’t like to criticise referees but it

was that bad.” However, Mark says they have already moved on from the loss and are determined to finish the back end of the club season strongly. Waimea resumes the Nelson Bays competition when they play Marist at Jubilee Park on June 11. “We want to make the semis but it will be tight for us. We will need to have a good run home but we can do that.

“We are playing well and have a really good thing going on and off the field which counts for a lot. We really want to finish off this last piece of the season.” Waimea trailed 0-6 at half time in last Saturday’s game before Dylan Fletcher kicked two penalties and halfback James Lash and No 8 Ben Eder scored tries in the second half. Renwick’s Mark Butler kicked a late penalty from the sideline to secure the win.

James Lash refuses to do things by halves Waimea Old Boys halfback James Lash has never been afraid to cross enemy lines. The one time Nelson Club player looks set to play a pivotal role in WOB’s run to a Nelson Bays division one semi-final spot. He’s also the skills coach for the new Waimea Combined secondary school rugby team, even though he won the Crusaders secondary school rugby competition with Nelson College in 2007. “It’s something some of the boys have been giving me grief over, considering my history with Nelson but it’s no different from playing against your mates on a Saturday around the traps.” The 2014 Heartland Rugby Player of the Year is relishing his time behind a Waimea Old Boys forward pack, despite only recently returning from a five week injury lay-off. “This is a rebuilding team but some of the young guys are starting to take ownership and we’ve had experienced guys like Jeff Lepa and Mike Coman who have come in and led from the front. James says his inside halves combination with Dylan Fletcher is

one that benefits from friendship and James’ own past in the No 10 jersey. “I like to think I know what (Dylan) is looking for in terms of quality of ball and it’s just a case of me adapting to what’s going on in front of me.” James says he would be keen to play for the Makos this season though admitted pulling out of the pre-season training camp eight weeks ago due to work commitments may hinder him. “I’d like to be involved and I think I’m playing well, so we’ll see. In the meantime, his focus is on Waimea Combined side. “I’d been helping out with the intermediate grades and then this opportunity came along and I thought it was a great chance to get involved with guys who wouldn’t normally have this sort of opportunity. “Initially, the concern was how would a bunch of guys from other schools go playing with each other but they’re playing for each other and the team.”

Big win for WOB div 2 Superliquor Richmond Waimea Old Boys are warming to the task of their 2016 season, beat-

ing Rangers 41-0 on Saturday. Waimea, like all teams, has the weekend off this Saturday for

Queen’s Birthday Weekend, before hosting Marist at Jubilee Park on June 11.
