Referee quits after online abuse Andrew Board
Nelson sporting clubs are being warned about what they post on social media after a Nelson football referee quit the game as a result of online abuse. The referee sent a Richmond Athletic player off in a first division game earlier this month for alleged dangerous play. He rescinded the red card on the Monday following the game, meaning the player would not be suspended for the next game. But the Richmond club then took to its of-

We’ve seen nationally that abuse of referees is dealt with fairly harshly and so it should be.” Internet safety expert John Parsons says club’s need to develop a social media policy or risk damaging their brand. “Organisations can spend a lot of time developing their brand and their reputation, which

Snow and ice bring winter fun The winter cold has arrived, but so has the winter fun. Last week, the ice-skating pond at St Arnaud was frozen enough for locals to dust off their skates and this weekend Rainbow Ski Area will open for the winter. The ice skating pond, located two minutes down the road from St Arnaud Village, has already proven popular with both professional ice skaters and families. Hamish Simpson, operator of the Rotoiti Water Taxi, has been hiring out skates for the first time, after purchasing the business earlier this year to keep him busy in the off-season. He says he has to check the pond each morning by making sure his foot won’t go
through the ice if he stomps on it. “It can be a little bit fickle with the pond. Sometimes it’s skateable, sometimes it’s not. You’ve got to be onto it and check it every day,” he says. Rainbow marketing and events coordinator, Georgie Tudor-Jones, says the ski field is looking in fantastic shape for opening day, this Saturday. “We extended our snow making to the top, last year it was only up to tower six. Even if we don’t have enough natural snow we’re going to have manmade snow right from the top from day one,” she says. To see a video on this story, visit

“I think that we’d tend to fly with the cheapest one because if they can do it, it shows that it can be done at that price and the other companies should be doing it too.”
“I think it depends on where they’re flying to and the prices, but welcome competition because I think it’s needed here.”
“I suppose if Jetstar offers better value for ticket prices, especially when you’ve got students at uni flying back and forward, obviously I’d go for Jetstar.”
“I’d probably give them a go, but it would depend mainly on prices and service.”
Jetstar CEO a Richmond man too Andrew Board
Nelson air travellers have been celebrating since the news of Jetstar’s possible arrival – one in particular. Jetstar CEO Grant Kerr lives in Richmond with his family and, after time as CEO of Air Nelson, knows exactly what the region will offer to Jetstar. But he says he won’t let local loyalties sway his decision about which centres to fly to. “We can’t have an airline just for me to fly to work. Is it commercially viable? That’s the question, but I don’t see anything negative

It’s also about gaining an understanding about how much support there is in that region. The key for us is ‘do we think we can develop and grow a partnership with that region?” He says Jetstar’s announcement is a “gamechanger” and Nelsonians could see up to a 40 per cent drop in prices. “People in the Nelson region have a very high propensity to fly. This will open up the opportunity to fly more often.” Jetstar will make their decision about where to fly in September, with flights starting in December.

Pollution levels drop in Richmond
Shoes & Accessories
Richmond’s air quality continues to improve with just two smoggy night recorded so far this winter despite some of the coldest June temperatures in years. Air pollution used to be a big problem in Richmond with smoke, mostly from domestic wood burners, exceeding the national environmental standard 35 to 40 times a year from 2003 to 2006. However, new rules limiting the number and type of wood burners in Richmond houses implemented in January 2007 have slowly been reducing the amount of air pollution. The national standard states that the amount of harmful smoke particles, called PM10, should not exceed a daily average of 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air. In 2006, the PM10 exceeded 50 on 35 days with the daily average soaring well above 100 on three occasions compared to just two exceedances last year and only two of 52 and 60 so far this winter. “It’s definitely getting better,” council environmental information manager Rob Smith says. “As you drive around you notice a lot less fires and the

Air pollution levels exceeded the national standards for the first time this winter last Wednesday. fires that are burning are burning a lot cleaner.” Rob says the council’s rules that prohibit wood burners from being installed in new houses and require old wood burners to be replaced with cleaner ones when a house is sold are the main reason for the improvement in Richmond’s air quality. However, Rob thinks that education and people’s attitudes are also helping. “People are more likely to report dirty fires which also helps. We shouldn’t forget the benefit of the good wood initiative which promotes the use of good wood suppliers. That’s also contributed towards improved and efficient wood burner operation, with better heat for cost and less emissions. “There are also more fires be-

ing removed than just those triggered by the house sales. People are putting in heat pumps and that’s also helped to improve air quality.” Rob says Richmond’s air quality is on target to reach new national standards that will only allow three exceedances a year by 2016 and just one by 2020. “I think we are on a good path to have no more than one by 2020 but it is very weather dependent. If we’d had five more days of the cold weather like we had last week then we will be pushing to make the new standards.” Rob says council is planning to review the issue next year and will consider introducing more stringent regulations if it wasn’t on track to meet the 2020 target.

Community Kindy’s new hours ‘family-friendly’ awards select top groups Kate Russell
The dedication of hundreds of hard-working volunteers was recognised on Monday night when Red Cross Nelson won the Health and Wellbeing section of the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards held at Seifried Estate. Red Cross has a number of programmes in the Nelson-Tasman region including its high-profile refugee settlement support programme that involves 90 volunteers. It also has 77 volunteers working in three second-hand shops, 180 volunteers helping the Meals on Wheels and a highlytrained disaster welfare support team. “It was really pleasing to win the award as recognition of the largely unsung efforts of our volunteers,” Nelson Red Cross president Nick Mason says. The Light Nelson Trust scooped the Supreme Award at the awards taking out $1500 in prize money and the chance to represent the region at the 2015 Trustpower National Community Awards in Dunedin next March. Other category winners at the awards which received 87 entries, were New Zealand Society of Genealogists Nelson (Heritage and Environment), Celtic Pipe Band (Arts and Culture), Coastguard Nelson (Sport and Leisure), Iron Duke Sea Scout Group and St John Youth (joint winners Education and Child-Youth Development), Histrionics (Tasman Award), Community Fruit Harvesting Nelson (Nelson Award) and Nari Casley (Youth Spirit Award).
Kindergartens are changing their operating hours to fit in with the school day, in a bid to make their hours more “family-friendly” amid competition from private preschools. CEO of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association Trish Casey says the change is in response to a demand for longer hours and to stop the migration to private centres. “Some people just can’t make kindergarten work with the current hours that we offer, especially in families where both parents are working,” she says. The association already has several kindergartens offering the longer sessions, and the new model will mean that all 19 kindergartens across the region will follow the same structure. A parent survey from last year showed that most parents were happy with the current hours, but another segment said they would happily take up full days. “What we figured was that what we’re changing to doesn’t affect the families who are happy with the shorter hours, because they can continue to have that, but we can now also address the needs of those who wanted something more, and attract new families,” says Trish. The new hours will mean big changes for teaching staff, who have been involved in a consultation phase. “We’ve taken onboard feedback and we’ve tried to make it work as well as it

We’re moving to what people in our community need,” she says. The kindergarten, which also offers a school holiday programme, already has families signing up for the longer sessions. “We have working parents who are taking it up, and they are happy
because they can continue with quality education,” she says. “We have a variety of families doing different options and overall the feedback has been very positive.” She says the longer hours will not compromise the quality of teaching. “There are all sorts of ways we can work around it, such as moving our meetings to later in the day.” The association says they will still support teacher aides and administrators and stand by their commitment to 100 percent registered teachers. “We think what we do is really special,” says Trish. “We’re about engaging our community and we work hard to make families part of what we do.”

Barriers installed to stop out-of-control cars
Users of the cycle path next to Whakatu Drive will have extra protection from next month when a $200,000 wire-rope barrier is finished. The 2.5km wire rope edge barrier, now under construction, is designed to protect people using the shared pathway from errant vehicles. But motorcyclists say the wire barriers are bad news for them and have dubbed them “cheese slicers” because they slice through riders if they hit them. But NZTA’s Mark Owen says
Whakatu Drive is one of the busiest roads in Nelson with a daily vehicle count of 21,000, and a new barrier will put proven lifesaving technology between walkers and cyclists and the thousands of cars that pass them every day. “We already know that the median barrier we’ve installed down the centre line is very effective, especially as it has been hit on a number of occasions. Every time it’s struck, we know that’s potentially a nasty crash that has been prevented. “We also want to keep people en-
torists back into their lane, which means they won’t run the risk of hitting someone who is enjoying an evening bike ride or stroll. It’s also safer for the motorist, so it’s a real win-win.” The chair of the regional transport committee, councillor Eric Davy, says it’s great to see this work is now underway. “It will hopefully encourage more cyclists to get on their bikes with greater confidence. The work is being done by Higgins and is expected to be finished by mid to late July.

Fourth of July cruise for American car fans Simon Bloomberg Big cars are a big part of American culture so it makes sense to celebrate Independence Day by going for a cruise in a gas-guzzling Ford, Chevy or Plymouth. And that’s just what around 80 Nelson car enthusiasts will be doing this Saturday when they join the Nelson Rod and Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise. It will be the fourth time the club has organised the event and club member Ian Jones says it’s always a great day out as well as being a fundraiser for prostate cancer trusts. “It’s a good opportunity for like-minded people to get together and talk about their latest (car) projects and look at other cars,” Ian says. “It’s also a fundraiser and, because it tends to be a male-orientated event, we thought prostate cancer trusts were an appropriate cause.” Ian says the cruise will also “boost the economy” with the big Yank Tanks “averaging around 15 miles to the gallon”. This year’s cruise will be heading from the Suburban Club in Nelson to Riwaka and back, a distance of about 100km which will equate to around $50 of gas for the trip. But that isn’t a concern for long-time American car enthusiast Barry Hefford
Barry Hefford and his 1938 Ford Deluxe Sedan hotrod he will be taking for a drive in this weekend’s Independence Day Cruise. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. of Richmond who will be driving his 1938 Ford Deluxe Sedan hot rod in Saturday’s cruise. “It’s all about enhancing performance and looks,” he says. “I really like the pre-1949 look with big mudguards, running boards and a narrow bonnet.” Barry says he has had “a life-long obsession with cars, becoming a hot rod enthusiast when he retired from speedway racing 15 years ago. He has owned five American hot rods including a 1927 Ford Roadster “which I regret selling”
and a Chevy Camaro. “My old man used to reckon I should have been born with wheels instead of feet. I used to race TQs and stockcars before I got into hot rods - I’ve owned five of them now and I don’t know if it’s any cheaper than speedway.” Ian says the cruise is for all American vehicles including motorbikes. It will leave the Suburban Club at 11am, with drivers meeting from 9.30am. Entry fee is $5 per vehicle which will be donated to prostate cancer trusts.

Music lovers turn back onto vinyl Kate Russell For Tim and Hayley Hodges, listening to vinyl is more than just about the music – it's about the experience. The avid record collectors are just two of many Nelsonians who are rediscovering the magic of vinyl, and say that even in the digital age of MP3s and Spotify, there will always be something magical about putting on a record. Tim and Hayley started collecting vinyl a few years ago when Hayley got Tim a record-player for his birthday. “I've always really liked the sound of them - that crackle that you get,” says Tim. “You can see it, you can feel it. It's a tangible experience,” adds Hayley. The couple go record hunting in second-hand shops and have had a few 'really good finds,' and if they are after a particular album they buy it online. They've even got their two young children hooked; who take turns every night choosing a record to put on before bed. “Our kids love them,” says Tim. “Especially when I change the speed to make them sound funny.”
Daniel O'Conner, owner of The Audiophile. Tim Babbage, owner of Beggs Music Works in Nelson, says he's seeing multiple turntables walk out the door each week, compared with five years ago when they would only sell one every couple of months. “It's quite surprising in a way. We’ve always sold record players, but it’s certainly bigger now than it was five years ago. Much bigger” says Tim. “Some of it’s nostalgia, but it's just fashionable again now. You get the

nice case, there’s the whole ceremony involved in putting your vinyl on the platter. It’s so much more tactile. It’s as much the ceremony opening the music as it is the piece of music itself - there’s no ceremony in opening your phone up to play an MP3.” Daniel O'Conner, owner of The Audiophile, is also seeing a big rise in turntable sales, selling between four and six players a month, compared with two years ago when they would be lucky to sell one a month. “We've had a few clients come in to upgrade their stereos and see our turntables, and they say 'oh, I didn't know you sold those',” says Daniel. “It does have its own sound, and people young and old appreciate being able to get quality turntables again.”

Wakefield cycle trail officially opened
Jessie Johnston Wakefield is now officially a part of the Tasman Great Taste Trail. Last Sunday, the community celebrated the completion of the section that connected them to Brightwater. A handful of people made the trip from Brightwater to Wakefield on their bikes where a gathering on the Village Green was attended by keen cycling enthusiasts and those involved in the construction and planning of the cycle trail. While the Wakefield section of the trail has been functioning for a while now, getting it off the road where it comes out on Edward St has only been a recent achievement. It now runs down past the church with a clip-on bridge hugging the road to give cyclists a safe path. “The Wakefield leg in itself has been functional for quite a while but that was the last step to make it really user-friendly. That’s why the com-
munity wanted to wait until that had been done before doing the big celebration,” says councillor Judene Edgar. “We did have a route where people could go up over the church hill, which was a bit high for some people and there were still places where you were right in the traffic, but we’ve done a lot of work and now we have this great shared cycle way.” Even during its incomplete stage, the trail has proven a popular attraction for cyclists. “We’ve got a counter on the trail and from January to May this year there were about 7500 passes. The same time last year there were about 4000,” says chair of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust, Gillian Wratt. The plan now is for the trail to extend through the Spooners Railway Tunnel, through Tapawera, across the Motueka River and join the West Bank Rd to create a 175km loop.

Best young growers to compete Jacob Chandler
There’s no home turf advantage for Hoddys Orchard employees Canaan Balck and Rowan Inwood as they prepare for the Young Fruit Grower regional competition. The competition, organised by Hoddys manager Andrew Kininmonth will see two of his employees compete against the region’s finest at the orchard on Friday. Events range from irrigation to human resources, quad bike safety, fruit quality and spreadsheets. Andrew says, as the competition elements are run by horticultural representatives and sponsors, his workers won’t have any advantage over the other entrants coming in from Riwaka and Mapua. “There’s no real advantage from my perspective. At the end of the day the people who are running the activities are totally impartial.” Rowan, who works as an orchard hand, did not intend to become a horticulturalist but says he landed in the industry after a change in circumstances. “I was studying graphic design in Christchurch but got caught up in the earthquake and decided to move back home. I decided I’d go polar opposite and take up a career in something I already knew, there’s a lot of horticulture in this area.” Rowan is in the last year of his apprenticeship. He says he has to do plenty of study in preparation for the competition. “For me, it’s human resources and orchard modelling, I haven’t delved into that much yet, I’m still studying through the ranks.” Canaan is a block manager and has entered the competition three times before. Last year, he placed runner-up in the regional finals. “For most of them this year it’s their first time. Hopefully a bit of experience gets me through.” Canaan started in the packhouse sorting and stacking boxes and has worked his way up through the ranks. The contestants will present a three-minute speech to a crowd of 200 industry representatives and supporters on Friday night. The winner will go on to compete in the national NZ Young Fruit Grower competition in Christchurch where they will have the chance to qualify for the Young Horticulturalist event in Auckland.

Prospan® Bronchial Syrup and Lozenges are a natural solution to soothe the throat and help clear the airways and, in their single serve packs, they are incredibly convenient. Prospan is well tolerated and recommended in over 100 other countries. With more than 350 million doses sold worldwide, it contains no alcohol, no sugar or artificial colours and no gluten and is suitable for use in children and babies from just one day old (lozenges are suitable for use in children over 6 years). Prospan’s® main active ingredient is Ivy Leaf. The dried plant extract is standardised, which means there is a consistently measurable amount of active ingredients every time the product is taken. For literally hundreds of years, people have placed their trust in the herbal power of wild ivy for respiratory tract support.

Originair to launch in Nelson: Cool, hope prices go down. Sheri Ropoama.
Well, if this is the case, then is it going to be viable for Jetstar to come in? Brenda Kenny. Sounds Air, Air New Zealand, Kiwi Regional Airlines, Jet Star and now Originair. I will fly with the best deal. Simon Scowen. Reading the article about the fare prices, I don't think any of them are cheap. Still going to pay the earth to get across the ditch. Wendy Thomas. As long as it's not the rusty old Origin planes sitting out the back of the airport. Rebekah Joy. Anita Punt becomes NZ's top scorer: Wonderful effort, candidate for Nelson Sportsperson of the year! John Sauer. Wire barriers on Whakatu Drive: My husband drives a vehicle recovery truck (tow truck) and picks up a lot of broken-down vehicles from that area. The barriers have now stopped them from pulling on to the grass area to load vehicles. This will mean they now need police cordons to block traffic to allow safe collections, leading to road closures. If police unavailable, then

a major danger to tow truck operators, vehicle owners and traffic. While waiting for recovery, broken-down vehicles will be forced to remain in lanes, causing a hazard. Karen Carey. Great idea, nice to see it being done before loss of life, instead of after. Tasha-Owen Workman. No, where do cars pull over with break-downs now. Let's see how many wiped out this weekend. Karen Mackey. It’s the cheap option and they should have spent the money to put in proper median dividers with pullover bays in them. The wire barriers are called cheese slicers for a reason, wait for the first motorcyclist to come off and hit one! Troy Dando. Good idea, surprised no one has been seriously hurt along that stretch of road, as reported last week cars been caught travelling at speeds exceeding 150 kmh. Richard Omlo. item on the agenda. Nelson ratepayers are in for a huge rate rise over the next ten years. It is disappointing that our councillors have learned nothing from Greece, and have displayed their lack of financial management skills. Their view is that ratepayers can fund any project or wish list, no matter how frivolous. Next election, we need some candidates who know something about finance, and who understand the financial situation of ordinary people. Dan McGuire. Both Tasman District and Nelson City councils have adopted their ten year plans and seem excited to announce a rate increase of only 2.6 per cent or 2.7 per cent. Do these decision makers take no regard to the economy and people’s personal circumstances. A compounded rate increase of 2.7 per cent amounts to an increase of over 30 per cent, not including the increase that will also be added by three revaluations undertaken by the government. Tell me who, other than an elect few exclusive groups, will receive a pay rise of 30 per cent, or even close to it? Simply put, the local councils seem to believe that the ratepayers are an open cheque book and that we will all easily roll over and take it. Both mayors and all councillors should throw these rates increases back to their staff members and say, 'start again, it is not acceptable.' Ian Read, Richmond.

GO Lift off. Go live. Call it what you will. On 26 June 2015 your previous recycling service ended. The new improved service began this week (Note: Calendar Week 2).
WHEN DOES YOUR NEW BIN GET COLLECTED? Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. The collection day is written on the sticker – this is the day for both rubbish and recycling collections. So, for example, if it says “Tue” then your collection day for weekly rubbish bags is Tuesday. It also means that your fortnightly recycling collection will be on a Tuesday. The number after your day indicates whether your recycling will be collected on Week 1 or Week 2. Week 2 collections started on 29 June, Week 1 collections start on 6 July.

Waimea student off to London theatre Waimea College year 13 student Peter Thomson has been busy performing with the school’s senior jazz ensemble that won the Nelson Youth Jazz competition held at the Boathouse in Nelson. Waimea’s senior ensemble won the Combo section for the fourth year in a row and also the Best Overall Band for the second consecutive year. Peter was named Best Bass Player at the June 21 competition that was dominated by Waimea College. But this month Peter will be putting his bass guitar away and picking up Shakespeare’s As You Like It as he prepares for a three-week tour of England as part of the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company. Only 24 student actors were selected for the tour following a lengthy selection process that started when 5500 students performed in 23 regional Shakespeare Festivals around the country. Peter says the company leaves this Friday and will spend 10 days in London rehearsing for As You Like It before performing the play at the Globe Theatre. It will be the highlight of Peter’s fledgling acting career and says he’s “really buzzing”
Waimea College student Peter Thomson is getting ready to perform at the Globe Theatre in London next month. about the opportunity to perform on the world’s most famous stage. “I’ll learn so much because we’ll be working with very talented actors and directors. All the people I’m going with are amazing too.” However, Peter says he expecting a big workload once they arrive as they only have 10 days to rehearse for their performance. He has been reading As You Like It to get a head start although has not been able to focus on any of the characters because they won’t know the parts they are playing until they arrive in London. “I directed a five minute
part of As You Like It for the Sheila Winn Festival and it won a couple of awards at nationals so I’m familiar with it. It’s a really cool play but it’s going to be hard learning it all in a week.” But it won’t be all work and play for the New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company, which also includes Nelson’s Sean Young. “We are going to visit Shakespeare’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon after performing at the Globe Theatre. I’m really buzzing - I can’t wait to go.” Waimea College arts coordinator Pauline Farley says the study and performance tour is “a rare chance for Peter to work with leading tutors and directors overseas and see some of England’s best theatre practitioners”. The programme will be based at the Globe theatre and include workshops, talks, and question and answer sessions with directors and actors. Waimea students Dylan Hutton and Brook Bennett have been selected, along with Garin’s Nick Erasmuson and Jake Robinson, for this year’s National Shakespeare School’s Production to be held in Lower Hutt, from September.

Just a thought... Being a church minister and a baby boomer, I have spent time with both family members and others who are dying. I have found this an incredibly precious time and also frustrating. As I have seen the terminally ill person slipping away, I have experienced the frustration of not being able to fix what is happening before me as the person goes through the process of dying. What I have learnt is each dying person has dignity and their life has value even as it draws to a close. Even in dying their life is precious and the greatest thing I can do is to give them my full attention. To sit, talk, cry, laugh with the dying individual and others watching. When the time comes when they can no longer talk we can comfort them with words, presence and perhaps touch. In our culture, there is at present a lot of talk about “the right to die”. There is no need to debate this, as we already have

Grace McIntyre gave Henley a flying start, winning the year 5 girls race to help her school win the teams competition. Mapua School’s Eleanor Dean was second with Henley’s Shinaye Toms fifth and Wakefield’s Loren Martin sixth. Henley also won the year 5 boys and year 6 boys titles with Matthew Bowen finishing second and Joe Clatworthy forth in the year 6 boys event. Henley won the boys and girls trophies and overall championship, finishing on 170 points, 77 clear of second-placed Hampden St and 288 ahead of third-placed Wakefield. Hope School won the small school category ahead of Ranzau and Tasman. Lilly Zwart was Hope’s best performer finishing third in the year 6 girls race while Maia Kininmonth was eighth in the year 5 girls.

Wanderers last rugby champions at the end of the day if snow has fallen. Shuttle bus services run regularly from the bottom car park, or chains can be hired, with providers listed on the Rainbow website. Rainbow boasts leading facilities, with a café on the snow serving a great range of food, from soups and pies to sweets and treats, as well as hot and cold drinks. It’s a great way to take a break from tearing up the snow and warm your hands over a coffee and snack. Quality rental gear is available, as well as repairs and maintenance services for snow equipment. Ski and board schools offer lessons for all stages of ability. This year, the team welcomes back a group of highly qualified international instructors, and the very popular Rainbow Development Programme for budding skiers and boarders kicks off on July the 19th. Rainbow offers group lessons, private lessons, and coaching
programmes to cater for all levels of skier or snowboarder, from novice to expert. If you sign up for a group lesson, you will be assessed for current ability and then assigned to an instructor with other skiers/riders of similar ability for your lesson. Private lessons offer the opportunity for either one-on-one coaching, or a group lesson with just your family or friends, and coaching specific to your individual needs. This year’s season has kicked off to a great start with the support and efforts of the numerous sponsors, who have been involved with getting things up and running for the year, and have helped improve the ski fields and facilities. Visit the website so you can check up on the latest weather reports, webcams, as well as road and lift statuses and much more, so you can plan your snow trip.

When Taylors Contracting Wanderers senior rugby team won the Tasman Trophy last month, it ended a lifetime of waiting for six of the club’s most dedicated and long serving supporters. Stan Friend, Doug Price, Johnny Robinson, Laurie and Barry Reade and Murray Nicholls all played for the Wanderers senior team the last time they won a championship back in 1955. They have followed the club’s fortunes closely over the last 60 years and last week talked to the Waimea Weekly about their glory days. “We were a pretty slick team,” Stan says. “We had some good players but I’d put a lot of it down to our coach Ace Wood. All the teams were playing 10-man rugby back then but Ace got us to run the ball more and it gave us an advantage.” Doug says Wanderers had a strong team in the early 1950s, finishing second in 1952 just one year after the club was formed by the amalgamation of Pirates and Rovers. The senior team also won the competition in 1954, scoring 184 points and conceding just 70 and one loss to win its first championship. However, Doug says the name engraved on those trophies, and the Tasman Trophy this year, could have easily been different if they had got their way. “When we amalgamated a lot of the players wanted to call the club United. But the officials said ‘no’ because it sounded too much like a soccer club so they named us Wanderers
Members of the champion 1955 Wanderers team, front from left, Laurie Reade, Doug Price, Johnny Robinson, back from left, Murray Nicholls, Barry Reade and Stan Friend. after an old cricket club that played at Spring Grove.” Doug says four of their championship winning teams, Johnny, Stan and Selwyn and John Bryant, played for the Nelson representative team with Johnny scoring the winning try in Nelson’s historic 12-6 Seddon Shield victory against West Coast in 1954. Stan says that was a huge occasion with thousands of supporters turning out for a victory parade on the streets of Nelson. “Rugby was a big thing back then. We’d get big crowds along to our club games, especially against Waimea, and they had 14,000 turn out to the parade for the shield team.” Although Murray says it’s impossible to compare their championship-winning team with their Tasman Trophywinning predecessors, they all agree the 1955 version was tougher. “It’s a different game altogether now so you can’t
compare the two teams. These young guys are amazing but I think we were harder.” It seems as though the 1955 team was tougher off the field too enduring cold showers after training at Brightwater and some marathon team bonding sessions after Saturday games. “When the clubs amalgamated they put an old building from the railway station up on rollers and rolled it up the street to the rugby ground,” Stan says. “It was pretty basic and only had cold showers but it did the trick. We also used to have a dance every second weekend and then go around to someone’s place for a party in between. We’d quite often end up going around to Robinson’s place for breakfast before going home after being out all night.” Many of the 1955 team have moved away and some have passed on but Stan says there are about 11 surviving members.

Club Day was a ‘huge success’ says president
Waimea Old Boys annual Club Day at Jubilee Park on Saturday was a big success, with the senior teams delivering three good wins and players from the club’s 19 JAB teams enjoying a big day out meeting their Super Rugby heroes James Lowe, Billy Guyton and Sam Prattley. “We had at least a thousand people at the park for most of the day,” club president Duane Whiting says. “It was an awesome day weather-wise and we had three big wins which helped - it was a great day out for all the players and supporters from all the teams.” However, Duane says the highlight of the day for the hundreds of young players from Waimea and the visiting teams was a chance to meet the club’s Super Rugby stars. “It was good to have the Super Rugby guys here and they were busy signing autographs and posing in team photos. You should have seen this young kid from one of the Takaka teams - he was having his photo taken with James and he was beaming.” Duane says the club’s volunteers did a great job organising Club Day which was sponsored by Hynds Pipes. Club stalwart Marc Hunter was presented with some Richmond Mall shopping vouchers for his significant contribution to the club. The Waimea Old Boys Senior B team beat Stoke Senior B 51-3, Waimea Under-19 beat Nelson College Third XV 61-0 in games at Jubilee Park while the Waimea Senior Women lost their semifinal to Marist 22-21 at Sports Park Motueka.

Waimea, not All Blacks, for Lowe Despite mounting speculation that star Nelson rugby player James Lowe would debut for the All Blacks next week, the player himself says it won't happen – yet. The Tasman Makos and Chiefs winger had another outstanding season in Super 15, and with 17 All Blacks unavailable for the historic test against Samoa in Apia due to Super 15 commitments, there was talk that James would be included for his first test match. Several national media outlets reported that James could make his debut, with several leading commentators selecting him on the bench in their "probable" teams. But James quashed those rumours this week, saying he is booked in for shoulder surgery and is unlikely to be con-

sidered. James needs the operation after injuring a shoulder ligament in a tackle against the Crusaders and he expects to have the surgery within the next few weeks. "I pretty much ruled myself out of All Blacks contention," James says. "You can't play at that level unless you are 100 per cent. "I couldn't lift my arm for a week after it was injured and then went through the rehab, but it still needs surgery. It was bad timing because I was starting to play some good rugby and then I just couldn't quite get back on the horse when I came back." However, James says he had a discussion with All Blacks coach Ian Foster last week and talked about "the things I need to work on".
"It's just the little things. Hopefully, I'll get them sorted and you never know." The sore shoulder didn't stop the flying winger from turning out for his beloved Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys on Saturday, though. James spent the morning at the club, signing autographs and talking with the club's youngest players before playing for Waimea as they beat Stoke 67-12 at Jubilee Park. The win keeps Waimea on top of the Car Company division one table. The competition's other top team, Taylor's Contracting Wanderers, also had a big win over Kahurangi, 47-12 in Motueka, while Wakatu Hotel Marist secured its spot in the top four with a 27-13 win over Galbraith Nelson in Tahunanui.
