Emily Beaumont Parents who walk into a café or restaurant and leave their parenting duties at the door are driving local restaurant and café staff to despair. Of particular annoyance is the trend for parents to retaliate toward establishments that have chided their children, by dishing out bad reviews online. While staff at popular eateries are quick to point out it’s the minority allowing their children to run amuck, the damage those children can do is major. Richmond hospitality staff regaled the Waimea Weekly with tales of out-of-control children that included having a brand-new $400 table repeatedly stabbed by a twoyear-old wielding a knife, and attempts to destroy a $40 menu much to the amusement of his parents. “It’s becoming hard in the hospitality industry because sometimes parents treat us like a playground,” says one local owner. “Some very nice children come in and have pleasant experiences. But the ones who don’t create damage and are time-consuming.” Staff and owners all share the sentiment that a restaurant or café is a place to eat, not a place to play. All parents can admit bias toward their own children, but it’s necessary to step outside of that family bubble when out in public and intervene during inappropriate behaviour from your off-spring. Ultimately the best way for parents to teach good manners is to model them.

Equestrian crosses the ditch for title Amy Russ Local hairdresser Natasha Connolly first started riding at the age of three, after a recommendation from a specialist to aid with her epilepsy. Natasha has her condition completely under control now, and has done for quite a few years, however the horse riding is something she has continued throughout her childhood years. They qualified for the ‘Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships’ after winning the New Zealand title for Saddle Hunter in the ‘Horse of the Year’ show in Hasings in March. The annual Land Rover Horse of the Year show is New Zaaland’s premier equestrian competition, featuring a range of horse and rider combinations from multiple disciplines. With over 1400 riders and 1800

horses competing for lucrative titles and prize money, the show is a feature on all equestrian calendars. Natasha and Tigger will be making their way to Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre in Melbourne, in November, to compete and Natasha says they will be up against at least 20 other competitors. “All of the contestants have won their title at their corresponding national event, so we are going up against the best. To win Saddle Hunter, the horses must be strong, handsome and have an elegant presence. Big, strong, ground covering movements, basically what you would see on the hunt field.” Showing is the most subjective of all the disciplines – it’s essentially a beauty competition, where each judge will have his or her own opinion. There is one indefinable quality that makes or breaks the

show horse - charisma. The logistics to getting to an event like this one is an ordeal, says mum Marilyn, “we have a quiz night to organise and will be doing another sausage sizzle and we have a Givealittle page set up, every little bit helps!” For the build-up to the event, Natasha and Tigger are training hard, “we will be competing in an indoor arena, so we have to get him used to noise and be comfortable around it. We are doing lots of lessons and exercising, and keeping things varied.” To find out more go to www. givealittle.co.nz/cause/get-tiggerto-werribee Natasha Connolly and her 14-year-old horse Tigger that she will be taking to compete in the Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championship in November. Bus users after more pick-up options Richmond’s main bus stop on Queen St outside the police station was chosen as the most suitable location for its ability to accommodate two buses while minimising effects on businesses in terms of loss of on-street parking. Also, its proximity to the main Richmond shopping area allows the location to serve a high proportion of customers, says Tasman District Council’s community relations manager, Chris Choat. But it’s this location that is causing some bus users distress at the distance they’re required to walk up Queen St. Chris says, based on feedback from bus users, consideration is being given to picking up passengers from the Lemongrass stop. “Based on the current bus schedules, passengers picked up from the Lemongrass stop may need to wait or transfer buses at the police station stop. We will ask the bus operators to explore any other options for scheduling which might provide a better service for users who need to be picked up from the Lemongrass Ana Clara steps onto the bus outside Richmond Police stastop,” says Chris. tion. The Survivor series is now over, with Christchurch librarian Lisa Stanger being named season two’s $250,000 winner. Nelsonian Brad Norris’s chance to win the title was over when he was blind-sided by his teammates, after 27 days, and still carrying an idol in his pocket. TVNZ and Appliance Shed ran a ‘People’s Choice’ poll, and Brad was leading the votes for a good long while, however he was pipped at the post by ‘the challenge queen’, Eve Clarke, at the live final on Sunday night. TVNZ senior publicist Emily Amey says, “it was a close race between 1st and 2nd with only a hundred or so votes between them.”

Keen knitters warm-up winter across the globe Emily Beaumont Residents of Wensley House Rest Home and Retirement Village are among the more than 130 knitters from across Tasman whose knitting needles have had a work-out creating woollen blankets for the disadvantaged in eastern Europe. “I think it’s wonderful. It’s very rewarding and nice to know we can help the poorer in other countries,” says Wensley staff member Carol Peckham. The charity-run nationwide project kicked off in 2000 and has 90 coordinators collecting the knitted blankets and other knitted items, destined for

distribution by Mission Without Borders staff as part of Operation Cover-Up. Nelson Tasman coordinators, mother and daughter duo Elisabeth VandenBerg and Elaine Borger, say they received more than 600 knitted items that were pressed into wool bales in a Wakefield woolshed. “Every year we’re amazed at how many blankets there are.” The bales will be placed alongside others from around the country in two 40-ft shipping containers, set to arrive in Rotterdam before Christmas and eastern Europe’s descent into winter where temperatures can plummet to -25C.

Four local students from Nelson College Preparatory School represented New Zealand in June, in Wisconsin USA, and competed against some of the best problem solvers from all around the world in the 2018 International Future Problem Solving Championships. The competition was split into two parts, one being a problem solving ‘exam’ and the other a creative presentation. The boys competed in the junior section of the Championships and scored first place in their creative presentation and

fourth in the exam. A total of 63 teams competed in their division, and the event hosted over 2500 students from all over the world. Sarah Watts, a Nelson College teacher and the team’s coach, is extremely proud of her students, and says, “to get anywhere in the top ten is incredible, so for them to have placed in the top five is just so exciting. The whole New Zealand affiliate stood for them when they were presented with their trophies.” “The scenario was set in a fictitious town where there was a real disconnect between law enforcement and police.

The police were using hightech weapons, and the boys designed a system to disable high-tech equipment based on body data. It would monitor the user’s heart rate and blood pressure for example, the idea being that they would be unable to fire a weapon if they were angry. You can imagine it was very complex. They had to understand the scenario, identify major issues and a come up with a range of solutions and a plan of action, all in 2 hours.” Sarah says the boys really relied on each other’s strengths and skill sets and supported each other all the way through.

Creating pathways and helping women to grow Amy Russ Grow NZ Women is a group with the idea of bringing together a network of women within the horticultural industry. The new initiative has been in the region for around a year and numbers are steadily growing. They want to create a pathway for women entering the industry and encourage more women to take

their horticulture careers further. Karla Bradley, president of Grow NZ Women says, “we have around 60 members and about 30 or more women attending workshops ranging from machinery repair and maintenance, to confidence, the RSE scheme and field trips to Plant and Food Research.” For Jackie Inwood, who has been in horticulture for over 30 years, she says things were a lot harder when she

started out, “it was a very maledominated industry back then, now this younger generation are so lucky that it is all open to them to build a career. They have access to all these resources and it is fantastic.” A key member of Grow NZ Women, she says, “the support we have is amazing, with the places we get to visit and speakers we have, it is a brilliant place to learn and grow, and support each other, too.”

Locally created e-bike set to launch Emily Beaumont Frank Witowski began designing, by his account, the first carbon fibre e-bike cruiser, 14 months ago while in his Richmond home. “I had thought ‘lets get an e-bike’ but they were really expensive and I couldn’t find what I wanted. So I thought I could design an ebike better,” says Frank. With that the German-born entrepreneur approached bike experts and opting for carbon fibre over its fifty-percent-less strength aluminium counterpart, set about creating and successfully building his perfect e-bike through a factory in China. Quality parts like Shimano, Tektro and Novatec were incorporated onto the strong and reliable frame, while only the most-advanced Samsung batteries power the largest Bafang motor possible, making it the ideal commuter when teamed with tyres that allow for on and off-road action. It became obvious he was onto a winner when Frank would be approached and queried about his set of wheels while out and about. With the evolving idea of building future e-bikes to sell, Frank set off touring his e-bike around the country in January this year to gather feedback from dealers,

Male and female versions are retailing for $4950 and launching at Richmond’s Avanti Store on Saturday, August 4.

Rural Women are committed to their St Arnaud community Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Rural Women St Arnaud are a sensational group of eleven women who are committed to helping their local and wider community in various ways. This year alone they have managed to raise and donate over $6000 for local organisations, including Nelson Tasman Hospice, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter and the Lake Rotoiti School Pool Project. They have put together gift boxes for local emergency services, care bags for the hospice and local schools, and hampers for Casting for Recovery participants. They have organised and catered dinners for Fulton Hogan and the WW1 Vintage Truck Rally, and they have held a Trash and

Treasure sale. All of this is done with hard work and dedication from all the members, and a lot fun and friendship along the way. Group member Marg Anderson says, “I am so lucky to have such a wonderful team, who are so committed to giving back to our community and surrounding area. While we are doing these projects we certainly have a lot of fun on the way, which is key to our success.” The local community holiday home owners have been very keen supporters of what they do, says Marg, “which makes our community very unique.” The locals say they are an impressive group of women, with kind hearts, massive energy and absolute dedication to their cause that are vital to the community.

The Commercial Hotel in Murchison. Photo: Commercial Hotel, Murchison. Nelson Provincial Museum, Tyree Studio Collection: 178054

Amy Russ The Commercial Hotel has a history that goes back longer than the township has been called Murchison. According to Murchison Museum archives, in 1873 Thomas Kerr built the first Commercial Hotel in Hampden (renamed Murchison in 1882, as there were three Hampdens in New Zealand) near the junction of the two rivers. In 1878 George Fairweather Moonlight purchased the establishment. George, born August 5, 1832 in Scotland, was a successful prospector in the Buller region who lent his name to landmarks all across the countryside, such as Moonlight Creek, a tributary of the Shotover River, and in 1863 the Buller area became known as Moonlight Country, a surveyor in 1863 reported that George had dis- Kim and Janelle Hocking covered ‘the best have recently taken over line of road for the lease for the ComCentral Grey’. Later that year a flood damaged the building and George rebuilt a new, larger hotel on higher ground, where it still stands today. However, having been closed to the general public since 2016, Janelle Hocking and her husband Kim have taken on the old girl and after a bit of TLC they have announced they will be reopening later in the month. The hotel was made a private catering hall for Fulton Hogan crew after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, but in recent months has been laying empty. Business owner Janelle says, “we have bought the business and are leasing the building. We are working on hiring staff at the moment, giving it a bit of an update, repainting it, making it a bit more modern. We will be open seven days a week and will have takeaways available to help cater to all the travellers that pass-through Murchison in the evening. We will be putting together 2-night accommodation packages for people doing the Old Ghost Rd. And we’re also going committed to reducing plastic waste by not having any plastic straws or polystyrene burger boxes.” Janelle says reopening the 6-room accommodation is on the list, “the accommodation side of the building hasn’t been open for 4 or 5 years. It will be great to have that part up and running.” The official opening day for the Commercial Hotel is set for August 31.

Luxury lodge in running for major national award Emily Beaumont Owen River Lodge has been selected as a finalist in the 2018 New Zealand Tourism Awards, the $36 billion-dollar tourism industry’s most prestigious awards. The five-star fly fishing lodge borders the Kahurangi National Park and is a mecca for brown trout with 29 rivers and streams accessible within a 90-minute drive. It’s the first fishing lodge to have been a finalist, with owner and general manager Felix Borenstein adamant its success is largely due to the staff. “This wonderful accolade is 24/03/15 3:51 PM absolutely a result of the sensational, talented and dedicated group of Kiwis who choose to

Nelson Matters

The Green Party has become a tragic comedy in stating they will vote for a bill that its coleader Marama Davidson stated last week was “undemocratic” and that “threatened democracy”. The ironically named Electoral Integrity Bill demanded by Winston Peters gives the power to a party leader to dismiss any MP the leader believes has acted in a way that distorts the proportionality of Parliament. The principal that voters and voters alone get to hire or fire MPs goes back 330 years to the Bill of Rights. This Bill also breaches the International Covenant on Civil and Political

Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. How can the New Zealand Green Party credibly campaign for such rights abroad when they are voting against them at home? The Green Party is also trashing its heritage. Founding co-leader Rod Donald described the same Bill in 2001 as “the most draconian, obnoxious, anti-democratic, insulting piece of legislation ever inflicted on Parliament” and that “it represents everything the Greens opposed.” It is not just the hypocrisy of the Green Party that should worry New Zealanders about this Bill. It has been vehemently opposed

by 21 constitutional experts from all our universities, the Human Rights Commission, the Law Society and the Clerk of the House of Representatives. Even Government Minister and Labour MP Hon David Parker says the Bill “will have a chilling effect on expression of dissenting views by MPs.” This law would be unconstitutional in Germany, the home of MMP, and most of the world. The few countries that have these are despots like Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sierra Leone. MPs in these countries have been dismissed for speaking out about corruption, for calling press conferenc-

es without their leader’s consent, and voting differently to how their leader directed. I am proud of being a National MP but my duty to our country and Nelson comes first. I crossed the floor to vote for a minimum wage for youth. I exposed financial wrong doing in the Druids, much to the discomfort of some then senior National MPs. I would have risked expulsion from Parliament under this new law. MPs switching parties is no justification for this Bill. The Labour, National, NZ First and Green Parties were all formed by MPs changing parties. Dis-

senting MPs like Derek Quigley, Marilyn Waring, Jim Anderton and Tariana Turia represented legitimate opinions. The decision on which MPs are principled and which are opportunists is for voters to decide. It is outrageous that this Bill is being passed when a majority of Parliament oppose it. Someone needs to stand up to Winston. I will be opposing it with every bone in my body. I will not give up until it is repealed. Freedom of speech, tolerance of dissent and democracy are core Kiwi values that must be fought for.

Nelson Bays Suzuki and Subaru dealership, which was founded in August 1997, is currently celebrating its 21st birthday! The dealership, which is part of Nelson Bays Motor Group, began as a satellite sales yard for new Suzuki and used cars, with the addition of the Subaru franchise in 2007. “Our sales division sells top quality new and used Suzuki and Subaru cars, and in the past 21 years we have taken Suzuki to new heights, to the point where it is now one of the most popular brands for the discerning private buyer,” says Dealer Principal Mark Chapman. “Suzuki has really been going from strength to strength over recent years since the introduction of the 2005 Swift.” Why are Suzukis so popular? “It’s because people have been search-

ing for more fuel efficient, cost-effective motoring, and with Suzuki having one of the most fuel-efficent model ranges available, they have gone through the roof! The Swifts are now the biggest selling small car model in New Zealand! What makes Suzukis so good? They’re very reliable and affordable; a good looking car which fits a large demographic; from an 18 year old young lady who can jazz it up with alloy wheels to an 82 year old grandma who just wants a nice reliable, small compact car for running around town.” Suzuki is now seen as a very reliable, reputable brand and a major player on the market. “We recently had a record sales month, selling 24 new Suzukis. We are now onto our 3rd generation of Swifts, although Suzuki is not just Swifts; we’ve got Vitaras, Jimmy,

Subaru starts at a different price level of $30,000 – topping out at $65,000, whereas Suzukis start at around $17,000 and go up to $40,000. Our financial packages are currently very popular for Suzuki; we offer 3.9% finance over 5 years, whereas through a bank, it’s probably around 5.7 % on a mortgage. People can walk in here with no

money, no deposit and walk out the door with a brand-new car from only $69 per week. We have 5 year warranties, 5 years road side assistance, and service plans included. Often it’s more affordable to buy a new car than a used one because they attract much higher interest rates. All of our cars are completely Japanese assembled, therefore our product is high quality. To top things off, Suzuki has just won a major customer satisfaction survey with Canstar Blue for four of the last

Richmond has come a long way since the township was first founded in 1854. Today, the area continues to flourish, and its retail and manufacturing hub is a bustling hive of activity. Despite the many challenges local businesses have faced such as adverse weather events, economic uncertainties, changing shopping habits and a major roading and infrastructural upgrade, the Tasman region is nevertheless faring well; it came 2nd in the latest ASB regional economic scorecard, and recent Paymark figures shows local retail spending is up 4.7 percent on last year. Many long-standing stores and companies contribute to the ongoing success of the district and are worthy of recognition. The following establishments have built strong reputations for reliable, high-quality products and services, and deserve acknowledgement for having been in business for more than ten years. Firstly, Austin Transport Services Ltd; it was established in March 2005 by Bryan Austin, who owns and operates the business with Lisa Thompson. “It has thrived because we’ve been able to offer excellent service across many different areas in the transport sector,”

The advancement of the times and regulations have presented some challenges; we used to draw water wells for anyone who wanted them; these days there’s a lot of hoops to jump through to get a permit. Between 1965 and 1980 was a very dry period, so there was a big demand for drawing water wells. Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists Ltd has also been going strong for 25 years. “We are car enthusiasts who absolutely love what we do, and we diversify; we can do more than exhausts and radiators,” says owner Bradley Evans. “There’re always setbacks, but you carry on; you stay honest and fair and you survive. Our quality and service is second to none; we guarantee everything and make sure our customers leave with a smile. The market’s changed; there’s a lot of cheap, nasty products out there but we don’t sell rubbish! That’s what has kept us alive. It’s our knowledge, experience and eye for detail which sets us apart. Our motto is “if it’s not good enough for my car, it’s not good enough for yours.” People have been buying fantastic new and used trucks from Startrucks International Ltd since 1995. “I’ve had a very loyal customer base,” says owner

Dale Greaves. “Being an owner/ operator, we can react more to the market, whereas with bigger corporate companies, it goes through a chain of command, creating delays. Being a privately owned company it’s been more hands-on relationship building. On February 18th, 2019, it will be exactly 50 years since Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre opened its doors. “The lodge has kept going for a variety of reasons,” says director Russell Ferens. “It’s been well supported by local communities through school camps, and other groups from service clubs to craft groups, to weddings and family gatherings. Financially, we aim to do things so they are not becoming a financial barrier for parents sending their children here. The attraction of the centre is its location and its history; children often tell me their parents came to Rotoiti Lodge and their grandparents, too. At first we primarily did school camps; now we do camps and accommodation. Its location is our real point of difference and making sure people have access to gear so they’re not missing

out, and are properly equipped for the conditions.” Forty five years ago Richmond Mall was preparing to open its doors for the first time, offering a whole new shopping experience for locals. The plentiful free parking and the wide range of businesses in a condensed space proved popular. From there, the success of the mall grew. However there were concerns the mall’s presence would wipe out retail in the main street, but it actually brought more people into Richmond! Today, Richmond Mall offers the largest shopping experience in the region, with over 70 stores onsite, a children’s play area and a fabulous Food Court. NBS first opened its door in 1862 when Nelson was a young colonial town struggling for a toehold in the wilderness that was Tasman Bay. The people who chose to settle here were industrious, tenacious and entrepreneurial. They were looking to build a new life with new opportunities, and they needed money to build new homes. So they formed what’s now known as The Nelson Building Society

local builder and stayed with them for over 24 years. Whilst there, Darryl was the foreman for a number of projects, including a large house built in Nelson which won the Master Builders Supreme Award. In 2005, Darryl founded Gardiner Building Contractors, and has been carrying out quality builds and renovations ever since. “We do architectural builds, renovations, light commercial, along those lines.” Anne Michelle hair-free clinic was established in 1992. “The business has thrived because of my passion to free people from unwanted hair,” says the owner/operator Anne Dickinson. “I started in Westport and travelled to and from Nelson for 12 years. Today, my service is attractive because of its discreet location within another premises, where there is a comfy couch, relaxation music and professional décor. There’s a ‘just for me space’ for clients, friendly conversation, and a speedy, permanent fix for unwanted hair, spider veins, and skin tag removal. I have over 30yrs experience, which is a real point of difference, and I am now the most experienced electrologist in NZ. People choose me for my extensive experience, my

professionalism, my values and my personality.” The idea of Club Waimea was born out of locals seeking a place with a friendly, sociable, community-minded atmosphere that was more than just a pub. The first public meeting was held at the Richmond Town Hall; it was met with such enthusiasm, the Waimea Town & Country Club was created, officially opening in 1974 with 650 members and is still going strong today. Over the years facilities have been added, such as a large kitchen to provide a restaurant service, a caravan park, a squash complex and a bowling green. Now trading as Club Waimea it hires out its main hall, two function rooms and large dining space. Phil’s Place and Nelson Wedding and Event Catering also operates at Club Waimea. Regular activities include things like darts, golf, Texas hold’em poker and Sioux Line Dancing! “Currently the Club has grown to some 1900 members, with its friendly atmosphere, good food, large screen tv’s and good music – patrons can use the kiosk to choose what they want to hear. Fun is being had by all!” says manager Wayne Williams.

motors ahead for Lochiel Lochiel McGregor came fourth in the Furnware New Zealand National School Champs in Hawkes Bay on July 14. Photo: Sarah McGregor.

Amy Russ Representing Henley School at the Furnware New Zealand National School Champs in July, first-time competitor Lochiel McGregor, was absolutely chuffed with his fourth-placing at the event. Racing against eighty other competitors from around the country, and two from the Tasman

District – Ollie Workman from Brightwater School and Bo Hill from Mapua School – Lochiel says the event “was awesome! I like how there is so much competition and I like how we can go really fast. Now I have raced here in Nelson, in Christchurch, Blenheim, Rotorua and Napier.” He hopes to take the sport as far as he can, and with idols such as Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ric-

ciardo, it seems he is heading in the right direction, saying, “I want to keep going and one day get into Formula One!” Mum, Sarah McGregor, says the competition is a lot harder and faster in the North Island, “they have the facilities up there, more so than Nelson, so the competition is fierce.” Lochiel is trained by Christchurch-based coaches, Tiffany and Matt Hamilton, and

Sarah says they are among his biggest supporters, “they make him work really hard. The sport is very regulated, and the point of that is so it is an even playing field for the competitors. They have to learn a lot about strategic driving, keep quite focused and think ahead about their next move, and think safely about whether or not that move will work. It can be quite exhausting mentally for

them.” Splitting his time between the Nelson and Christchurch tracks is a costly affair, and the family are open for more sponsorship. “It’s really very hard to get sponsorship for the sport, we are lucky enough to have Nicholson Industrial Contracting, Talleys Group and Mini-Me Photography on board, but there is always room for others.”

After a two-year absence, the Mike Pero Nelson Giants will head to the capital this week for the New Zealand NBL finals series. The Nelson franchise finished the regular season in second spot with a 14-4 record to book a semi-final date with the Southland Sharks on Saturday. Giants general manager Bill Dahlberg says the top four finish has been a culmination of 18 months of hard work restoring the Giants. “It’s exactly what we were planning for, year one of our three-year plan was to get into the finals and we have done that.”

Proud to help the Giants add some BITE to their game

He says they have developed a “bloody good group of players” in 2018 and under the astute tutelage of Jamie Pearlman, have every chance of winning their first NBL title since 2007. “We have got one of the most talented squads in the competition, I like our chances.” Bill says the Giants will have about 80 supporters making the trip across the Cook Straight with a further 20 coming from Cairns. “The crowds have returned which has been great, everyone is responding to a team that looks like it is putting its heart out there every week and that’s all you can ask for.” Bill says finals basketball is all

The Nelson franchise will have a full fit squad to pick from for the final four, Jerry Evans Jnr having sat out the weekend with an ankle complaint while Finn Delany returned from a groin injury to contribute 21 points. The defending champion Saints clinched the regular season title with a 91-75 win over the Giants on Thursday night. Richmond F45 trounce Waimea College 40-29 A confident start from the shooting contingent set up Richmond F45 for a convincing win against Waimea College at Saxton Stadium on Thursday, July 26. Sharon Finch was in accurate form, connecting well with Jelena Vucinic to gain early points. Goal shoot Kathleen Thornalley led her side with conviction, gaining near perfect shooting accuracy in the opening quarter. Kat Jones and Kimberley Keil paired well on defence, snatching turnover ball with strong end-to-end clearance. McKenzie Orange was quick to attain loose balls in the secondquarter, however several passes went astray. Richmond F45 were slow to gain traction in this period, the team finding their momentum with five minutes to go on the halftime clock.

With a 21-11 half-time score, the experienced Richmond side led into the second-half determined to extend their lead. This was evident through more confident attack and triangle play in the shooting circle. Great timing by Sarah Steele combined with fierce defensive by Kat helped to secure a 34-18 end to the third-quarter. Kat was relentless in defence, giving close attention to her goal shoot and gaining good front position to intercept clean ball. There were a few missed opportunities on attack despite defence working hard to steal turnovers, however Richmond F45 were happy to seal the win 40–29. They would happily say it wasn’t the prettiest game to watch but will certainly be pleased to have the four competition points on the board.

All involved should be immensely proud with both sides having great support and the game played in perfect conditions. It was an early penalty that got HLS Waimea on the board with Chris King striking it between the posts. Then came the Wanderers charge and it was their big number 1, showing the pace of an outside back, who went straight through the middle to run 60metres and put them on the front foot and from there the Wanderer’s forwards rumbled it over to put them in front 7-3. With one player in the sin bin the Waimea forwards went to work and tucked the ball under the wings and marched their way to the goal with Inga Moa Fili’Moeulie crashing over.

The second half started all too well for Waimea with Chris King slotting another penalty then 5minutes later dotting down for a try as well, to push them out to a 20-7 lead. For the last 20mins of the second-half it was all Wan-

derers as they just kept chipping away at the lead. They eventually locked things up with three minutes to go and it stayed that way until full-time. Then came the time the Waimea boys had to dig deep, with the first portion of the overtime all

Waimea men take out thrilling squash final The Nelson Bays Interclub finals were played at Waimea Squash Club last week. Spectators were treated to a thrilling night of squash, in what was arguably the closest results seen in the competition’s history. The mens final was contested between Waimea 2 and Motueka 1. First up were the No. 4’s, Logan McCrae of Waimea played Matt Watene. Matt was the favourite, however Logan arguably played his best squash of the season. Logan lost 3-1, though the match was far closer than the scoreline suggested. Next the No. 3’s and Waimea’s NZ junior rep Liam Gale beat Motueka’s Kyle Harrison 3-0 in a solid display of great squash. Then Waimea’s Martin Ferguson put on massive effort against up and coming Motueka player Luke Creighton. Martin gave him a scare taking one game and almost a second, but in the end was out gunned

home to win 3-2. Waimea Men’s 2 beat Motueka in countback by just 3 points (8 games all, 205-202 in points). The Ladies final was also a thriller, Waimea Ladies 2 played Motueka Ladies. Debbie McCrae and Nicola Pilkington both lost in 3. Rebecca Gibb then won in 3 and in the final match no.1 Susan O’Connell had to beat Motueka’s Keren Barcus in 3 to win the title. Unfortunately Susan couldn’t do it, Keren winning 3-1, and the Waimea Ladies team had to settle for runners-up, losing 7-6 in games. Playing off for 3rd and 4th in the Men’s were Waimea 3 and Nelson 1. Waimea’s Laurence Buschl and George Henderson recorded loses, while Angus Morris-Denby and Henry Aitken had wins. At eight games all it went to countback, incredibly Waimea 3 won by just one point, 188-187. It never gets closer than this.

Footballers catch lunch in the bay Junior footballers took to the fields around the region again on Saturday, July 28, after a few weeks off for holidays, although the 1st Kicks and Fun Football kids carried on right through. Last weekend’s session included dribbling drills through cones – first without a ball and without knocking over the cones, then again with a ball without knocking over the cones, and then when they’re getting good at that they have some fun and have to dribble through deliberately knocking over specific colours with the ball, and finally knock over every cone they can by kicking the ball at them. Football skills and a lot of fun is what kids at this age just love. In a slightly older age group,

the 9th Grade Andrew Healey Signs Richmond Panthers drew an away game to Golden Bay in Takaka the first week back. It was a fantastic day for all the players and family members who travelled over the hill, and the game ended in a 4-4 draw. Golden Bay played some good counter attacking football, and were 4-1 up shortly after halftime, however the Panthers rallied well and with tenacity and great skill dominated the last 15 minutes to create multiple chances and just about steal the game. Man of the match for the Richmond side was Liam McPherson, who impressed with his determination and was helped with great second-half performances also from Zac Samson and Harry Benbow.

After the game the whole team travelled to the Anatoki Salmon Farm for some team bonding and well-deserved lunch caught by the boys. The Panthers would also like to thank the Bay for hosting them. Elsewhere the club recorded 4 wins from 5 youth matches, and 4 wins from the 8 seniors. The 4th Division Sprig and Fern Stags went down to Nelson Suburbs in their Greg Brown Cup match, however the Tasman Auto Electrics Bogans advanced to the final with a win over Mapua. The 3rd Division Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle also reached their A.R. Hurst Cup final by beating Motueka, while the Global Travel Colts lost to Tahuna.
