Food companies win big

Fresh fruit from around the Tasman district is one of the keys to the success of two Nelson food producers who starred at the New Zealand Food Awards held in Auckland. Brightwater company Tasman Bay Food Group won the Frozen Award for its Juicies Tube range at last Thursday’s awards while Nelson-based Chia Limited won the
Massey University Healthy Award for its innovative fruit drinks. Tasman Bay Food Group executive director, Marina Hirst Tristram says they press 20,000 bins of locally-grown apples, pears, boysenberries, kiwifruit and feijoas a year and that fruit is the basis of their Juicies Tubes frozen ice confection range. She says the quality of the fruit is “hugely important for us” and is reflected in the fact that their Juicies Tubes were also a finalist in
the Food Safety and Quality and Healthy categories of the awards. “We were thrilled to place as finalists in three categories, so being announced as the overall winner of the Frozen Award is an incredibly exciting development,” Marina says. Marina says Tasman Bay Foods, which employs 50 staff, has been making the Juicies Tubes for 22 years and has invested a significant amount of time and money into improving the product.
“Juicies have been a popular feature in school canteens throughout New Zealand for decades and are synonymous with quintessential Kiwi summers,” Marina says.” We continuously strive to improve and evolve our products, brands and business strategy, so being recognised with this award for the success of our new Juicies Tubes range is fantastic.”

Pig hunt a family affair Pig hunting is usually the domain of men but last Saturday the ladies and children also weighed-in some prize-winning hogs at the Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge Kerri Boustridge showed girls can do anything catching a 54.0 kilogram pig to win the Franks Trees women’s heaviest pig section. Belinda Drummond with a 45.6kg pig and Chelsea Brooks with a 37.2kg pig were also right up there with the men. Team Barnes, with brothers Hayden and Ross and their sons Logan, 10, and Kaleb, 11, were among the many families entered in the competition. They had a good day weighing in five pigs with Logan catching the biggest at 27.5kg. “We got five pigs hunting around the Howard and Manuka Island and I got the biggest,” Logan says. Ethan Smith-Scott won the intermediate heaviest pig at 52kg while Jimmy West won the junior heaviest pig at 33.6kg. See page 18 for full story and results.
