Food companies win big

Fresh fruit from around the Tasman district is one of the keys to the success of two Nelson food producers who starred at the New Zealand Food Awards held in Auckland. Brightwater company Tasman Bay Food Group won the Frozen Award for its Juicies Tube range at last Thursday’s awards while Nelson-based Chia Limited won the
Massey University Healthy Award for its innovative fruit drinks. Tasman Bay Food Group executive director, Marina Hirst Tristram says they press 20,000 bins of locally-grown apples, pears, boysenberries, kiwifruit and feijoas a year and that fruit is the basis of their Juicies Tubes frozen ice confection range. She says the quality of the fruit is “hugely important for us” and is reflected in the fact that their Juicies Tubes were also a finalist in
the Food Safety and Quality and Healthy categories of the awards. “We were thrilled to place as finalists in three categories, so being announced as the overall winner of the Frozen Award is an incredibly exciting development,” Marina says. Marina says Tasman Bay Foods, which employs 50 staff, has been making the Juicies Tubes for 22 years and has invested a significant amount of time and money into improving the product.
“Juicies have been a popular feature in school canteens throughout New Zealand for decades and are synonymous with quintessential Kiwi summers,” Marina says.” We continuously strive to improve and evolve our products, brands and business strategy, so being recognised with this award for the success of our new Juicies Tubes range is fantastic.”

Pig hunt a family affair Pig hunting is usually the domain of men but last Saturday the ladies and children also weighed-in some prize-winning hogs at the Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge Kerri Boustridge showed girls can do anything catching a 54.0 kilogram pig to win the Franks Trees women’s heaviest pig section. Belinda Drummond with a 45.6kg pig and Chelsea Brooks with a 37.2kg pig were also right up there with the men. Team Barnes, with brothers Hayden and Ross and their sons Logan, 10, and Kaleb, 11, were among the many families entered in the competition. They had a good day weighing in five pigs with Logan catching the biggest at 27.5kg. “We got five pigs hunting around the Howard and Manuka Island and I got the biggest,” Logan says. Ethan Smith-Scott won the intermediate heaviest pig at 52kg while Jimmy West won the junior heaviest pig at 33.6kg. See page 18 for full story and results.

Coastguard gifted yacht by Weekly Nelson Volunteer Coastguard members say they’re “completely blown away” by a donation that could see it raise $20,000 over the next year. Waimea Weekly and its sister paper Nelson Weekly have donated a 20 foot Red Wing trailer sailor that was owned by the publishers of the papers, Steve Page and Jenny Bates. The yacht was bought for around $7000 but fully restored is worth about $15,000. Coastguard volunteers will spend the next year restoring the yacht and will be calling on the local community and businesses to help in any way they can. Over that time, they will also sell raffle tickets for the yacht at $10 per ticket and next spring it will find a winner. Nelson Coastguard president-
elect Graeme Richards says it is looking for a fundraising project and one that will also raise its profile in the community. The idea of restoring a yacht and raffling it off was “just perfect”. “It’s amazing, it blew us away really. It’s pretty apt for a coastguard unit to get a yacht to do up and then raffle off. This will give us something really worthwhile to get our teeth stuck into and it will really make a big difference.” The boat and its trailer are already in good condition but it does need some attention, including a paint job and some extras, like an outboard motor. It sleeps four people and has complete rigging including sails. Graeme says they’ve already

been speaking with some local businesses about helping out but are keen to hear from any others that may want to support the coastguard with the project. “We’ve got some clever people in the coastguard who can do a lot, but we will be looking to the community for extra support.” Steve Page says he is rapt the yacht will be put to good use. “We had the yacht and it was sitting there not doing anything, so I thought this would be great way for our local papers to support our local coastguard. So many Nelsonians use the water every weekend and we want to help keep them safe.” To help with the project, contact Graeme at pestcontrol.nelson@gmail.com

Boats lost after strong wind Andrew Board
Two boats were hit so hard by a wind in Nelson last week that they were blown from their moorings. One boat owner says his 3.4 metre smartwave dinghy is “probably on its way to Fairwell Spit”. Authorities are also on the hunt for the owner of another boat that washed up near Nelson Airport.
Nelson harbour master Dave Duncan says that he received a call from the owner of the dinghy on Monday to say it was missing after it was blown free from its mooring. It had a 15 horsepower motor on the back and Dave says they can’t do much “unless it washes up somewhere”. The second boat was moored near Monaco when it broke free and washed up on the southern tip of Nelson Airport. Dave says
A boat that washed up near the airport. they are on the hunt for the owner so he can move it. “If it had been a danger to
navigation I would have removed it immediately but it’s sitting quite high on the bank.” He says boat owners need to make sure their ropes and chains are checked regularly. Dave says if the owner doesn’t come forward within 30 days, the boat will be classified as an abandoned wreck and sold to cover the costs of salvaging it.

The Beacon Hill Shabby Chic Market held on Saturday was a showcase of beautiful Shabby Chic creations ranging from locally made country style home wares and gifts to antiques and vintage clothing.
The country theme continued into the food area with Devonshire teas, home-made lemonade, hay bales and tables dressed with flowers. Organiser Rebecca Bay was amazed at the turn out of peo-
ple. “Stallholders are happy and everyone’s seems to be enjoying the day, which is great,” Rebecca says. The Beacon Hill Shabby Chic Market runs four times a year with the next market on November 29.
Property insights Your pets and open homes
Selling your home affects everyone in the household, including your pets. Your dog may be the best mannered dog in the street while you are on your property and with him but once there are strangers looking at your property he will turn into a loud, over protective, ball of fire. Your lovely parrot that talks and interacts with you can turn into a loud, screeching, ear piercing distraction that could make it very difficult for a buyer to concentrate on what your property has to offer. It is always best for you to take the dog with you, cover the bird and tell your agent if your cat has any behavior problems. Cats are usually fine as they are able to find a secure place to hide in the garden, then shoot back into the house when the buyers are outside.
Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)
Rural properties have many more pets and animals, however these are usually contained in paddocks, stables or yards. Rural buyers are usually familiar with stock, electric fences, farm gates and other hazards and hopefully your agent will have some rural background. If you are worried about your pets then talk to your agent and formalise a pet management plan that will put everyone at ease.
If you have a property related question then e-mail me and I will see if I can help you. lydia@nelsonrealestate.co.nz

Hillary House delivers the best songs and bribes It wasn’t just the best stage performance that gave Hillary the winning edge in Waimea College’s annual house song contest, they also made sure they did the best job of bribing the judges. Principal Larry Ching, who was head judge at last Thursday’s contest, told all the students that they had produced “the best house song performances over the last 12 years” and that finding a winner “would be a hard call.” Brittany Rusbatch, left, and Olivia Meikle lead the chorus for Cooper House during Waimea College’s house song contest last But Larry also let it slip that Hillary and Cooper Thursday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg had the inside running after presenting the best bribes to the judges. “I’d like to thank Cooper and Hillary for all the bribes I have received during the week,” Larry told the contestants before before student teacher Oakley Salton announced that Hillary’s grey power-themed performance was the winner. Cooper’s punk rock performance and bribes, including bonded boy slave Hugh Hendrikson, were good enough to secure second. Sheppard finished third with their space age-themed song while Rutherford’s zombies were fourth.
Herbal Attack On Arthritis ArthRem is a new dietary supplement that may assist those who need joint health support. The active constituent is a plant compound called Artemisinin, which is the basis of the world’s anti-malarial medications. Whilst developing a new herbal extract for malaria, its benefits for joint health were discovered due to its positive impact on the immune system and suppression of inflammatory factors. A number of studies since have indicated the benefits for joint health. It is important to note that it is not an immediate pain relief option and is likely to take up to three months to build up therapeutic levels in the body. Having said this, it is a much better option for longer term condition management.

Students to race hand-built karts After spending a year planning, designing and lovingly building their karts, dozens of high school and polytec students will go head-to-head in a race to see whose is the fastest. Last year was the first Top of the South Grass Kart Racing Challenge and it was such a success that 20 karts have entered this year, up from 12 last year. The challenge is being held at Tapawera Area School on October 24. The event is sponsored and co-organised by NMIT and is a local extension of the South Island Grass Kart Racing
event, which is being held in Gore later this year. Students work in teams of four and the karts are built over the course of the year, to a set of specifications which allow for a range of variations to gearing and steering geometry. Students are encouraged to experiment with the elements of their karts and then test them out against their peers’ versions. Students can also gain NCEA credits. The 20 teams taking part are made up of students from Nelson College, Waimea

Sanctuary gets new fence Jessie Johnston After a decade of ground work, supporters of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary gathered to celebrate the first steps in the construction of a pest-proof fence. It’s been 13 years since the first meeting in October 2001 when the idea of a sanctuary for our valuable and threatened native species was first conceived. Last Saturday’s ceremony included a dawn blessing and was followed by the first ground breaking and local school children installing the first fence post. “There has been so much work to get us to this stage, from our own amazing volunteers who have put in thousands of hours of trapping, monitoring, track cutting and weeding, from the many financial supporters, large and small who
have helped us reach the target of $4.7million, and for all those who have helped in many other ways,” says chairman of the Trust Dave Butler. “This event marks the vision becoming a reality – Nelson is to have a wildlife sanctuary and visitor attraction on its doorstep, it’s a very exciting moment as we see fence construction begin.” The actual earthworks for the fence will be starting in two weeks with construction expected to last around 18 months. Once completed the 700 hectare fenced sanctuary will not only provide a safe environment for threatened species like the kiwi and tuatara but supporters believe its benefits to the region will include a pristine native bush experience for visitors, research centre and outdoor classroom to connect people with nature.

Police are happy with the driving habits of truck drivers, although some were caught using their cell phones while driving. Police recently focussed on the driver behaviour of all commercial and passenger service
vehicles travelling along the Shenandoah Highway section of State Highway 65 through to Nelson on State Highway 6. Highway patrol sergeant, Terry Richards says he was very pleased with the behaviour of commercial drivers.
The highest speed they clocked was 102 kilometres per hour, he says. But ten commercial drivers were issued tickets for using a cell phone while driving and another ten for not wearing a seat belt.
Corkill now has $45,000 for new lungs Mike Corkill’s chances of securing enough funding for life-saving surgery have dramatically increased, thanks to a fundraising website which encourages people to donate a dollar at a time. One Dollar Warriors has Mike’s story as its feature for the month and it has already raised $10,000 for Mike and his family in just three days. Together with the money he has already raised, he now has $46,500. Mike needs $100,000 to fly to India for a new set of lungs, which he needs to live.
Mike Corkill outside McDonald’s in Richmond last Tuesday night, where proceeds from $1 cheeseburgers went to his cause of trying to raise cash for a new set of lungs. Photo: Bill Evans. The success of the One Dollar Warriors campaign has come hot on the heels of a fundraiser by McDonalds Richmond, which raised $700. The fundraiser was held last Tuesday night and people
could buy a cheeseburger for just $1. That raised $550 for Mike but McDonalds upped it to $700. Mike says he’s in good spirits after the two fundraising boosts. “It’s looking good. The other two people that
have gone on the One Dollar website before us on this website have raised around $50,000 so we’re hoping we’ll get a similar amount.” To donate a dollar, visit www.onedollar warriors.org.nz

Nelson bands have won the national competition in two of the past three years. When Helen Hoby’s daughter helped her put an entry form into the Win A Seat competition at Fresh Choice, Richmond, she said “you will probably win Mum” and she was right! Helen, a very keen tennis player who plays socially a couple of times a week, was thrilled to win the Australian Open Win A Seat prize. “This is very exciting, I’ve never won anything” Helen says. Fresh Choice customers had to spend $40 or more to receive an entry form into the competition. The Win A Seat prize package worth $5,800 was drawn at random and includes flights for two people to Melbourne, three nights accommodation and tickets to the Australian Open. Recently retired Helen, the only winner from the South Island in the national Fresh Choice competition, can’t wait to watch all the tennis action on centre court. “Roger Federer is my idol” Helen says.

Just a thought...
By Matthew Grant, from Grace Church You might have heard the expression ‘like father like son’. If you met me and my dad you’d doubt that’s true. I’m tall, dad’s short; he’s got black hair, I’ve got blonde hair; he’s calm, and I’m a bit fiery. He likes country and western music, and I know the truth - that it’s of the devil. We do have things in common - but for the most, we’re like chalk and cheese. Genetics play a role in who we are, but we’re much more than a by-product of a biological process. For a moment would you gaze at yourself through the lens of theology (the study of God). The Bible says: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you says the Lord”. God formed
you; and before you were in the womb He knew all about you. Before you were an idea of your parents you were a God idea. Before your genes kicked in, God had already created you in His imagination. Your building blocks are more than just DNA - they’re the very thoughts of God Himself. Though we may have physical and psychological similarities to our mother and father, God has made us very different to them. Years ago on New Zealand television there was a commercial I liked. It was an advertisement for hay-fever tablets. A father and son stood together looking at a big paddock of wheat. The camera pans to the son. He’s obviously a severe
News hay-fever sufferer as streams of tears and snot run down his face. “Son” the father says,“Soon all this will be yours!” Horror comes over the son’s face. “Son!” the father says, “Let’s run through the wheat fields together”.The father grabs his son by the hand and, almost dragging him, they run together through the wheat field. The snot and tears begin to flow. Poor kid! It’s pretty obvious that he’s not like his dad; he’s just not cut out to be a wheat farmer. For a long time I wanted to be just like my dad, he’s totally amazing, but I’ve realised I can’t be like him because God made me different. He didn’t make me better or worse than my dad, just different. It’s the same with you and your parents. You can’t be them, nor do you have to be them, because you’re you.

Rowan Dron, Samuel Knight, Alex Tyson and Mitchell Lockhead are all Certified Electricians and here to bring you the best in electrical services. Rowan Dron Electrical is here to bring you the future in electrical services that cleverly and efficiently manage your home, from lighting to temperature and appliance control. Based and run out of Nelson, Rowan Dron Electrical has grown significantly, employing more staff to undertake a larger volume of work, stretching down to Christchurch and taking their services to clients right across the country, as well as overseas. Whether you are looking for some more outlets in the kitchen, the installation of solar panels or a fit-out for full house automation, Rowan Dron Electrical can cater to the job no matter what the size and complete the task efficiently and reliably Solar Rowan Dron and the team are passionate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. This method of operating your home is not only a viable way of saving you money, but is also much more environmentally friendly. A PV Solar System uses PV solar panels to convert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This is then used to power the household while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold back to the electricity companies,
or if you prefer, stored for future use in an off-grid system. Because the panels are harnessing the light from the sun and not the heat, power can continue to be generated in light cloud. Rowan Dron Electrical has been behind the installation of many solar systems throughout the region and has seen many satisfied customers enjoying the benefits of a more sustainable home. The cost of a PV Solar System depends on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation, but Rowan and the team will happily provide a no-obligation free onsite assessment and a free quotation if the system is right for your home. The entire team are Certified Electricians as well as being qualified solar installers who can advise you on the best way to maximise your savings from the system. SmartVent For a warmer, drier and healthier home, Rowan Dron Electrical can offer you a home ventilation system from SmartVent. The system quietly ventilates your home with fresher, drier air and removes condensation and moisture which will end up causing damage to paint and wallpaper, rot walls and harm soft furnishings. Mould and mildew also lead to airborne allergens and aggravate respiratory illnesses like asthma. SmartVent Synergy

Pig hunter cuts it fine at Wanderers contest Murchison’s Logan Huxford secured the bragging rights at the Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge catching the heaviest pig but it was a close call as he raced to get back in time for the weigh-in at Brightwater. When Logan first got onto the prize-winning pig near Murchison at about 8am on Saturday he thought he would have plenty of time to catch it and get back to the Wanderers clubrooms before the weigh-in closed at 5pm. But the boar had other ideas and broke free of Logan’s dogs and bolted into dense bush with Logan and his dogs in pursuit. “The dogs had it bailed

but it broke and took off,” Logan says. “We got onto it again but it ended up being a four or five kilometre carry - that took four and half hours so we were running out of time. “We got to the weigh-in with five minutes to spare so it was a close thing. Even then I was surprised it was the heaviest pig - it didn’t feel like it was a 140 pounder.” Logan says he can thank his faithful nine-year-old dog, Ben, for winning the prize because Ben bailed the pig on his own until the other two dogs arrived.
Logan’s 64.5 kilogram pig won $500 from Superliquor Richmond. Mitchell Heywood won the $1000 Concrete Company average weight competition. Wanderers won the rugby club challenge with a combined weight of the heaviest three pigs of 152.8kg ahead of Tapawera’s 130.6kg. Other major prize winners were: Sealords second heaviest boar, 63.0kg, William Sommerville; Gibbson Construction third heaviest boar 61.5kg, Cameron Strange; Waimea Weekly heaviest stag 79.0kg, Brad Pyers, Christine Cook Best Tusks, Shannon Omlo.

WOMEN in BUSINESS Singapore is an exciting and vibrant city to visit for a holiday. I have been many times and it is one of my favourite destinations, says Amanda – the new owner operator of House of Travel Richmond. There’s heaps to do for families – Sentosa Island for Universal Studios, the Singapore Zoo for breakfast with the orang-utans or check out the Night Safari. The Singapore Flyer has fabulous views of the city day or night. I recommend visiting the amazing Gardens by the Bay, Jurong Bird Park, Marina Bay Sands, the Amanda Botanical Gardens, Chinatown and Little India. To Radovanovich relax at the end of the day The Raffles Hotel Long Bar is a must for a Singapore Sling. Eating out is a delight with many tasty options plus there are several forms of inexpensive transport too. Did I mention the shopping, super bliss! Singapore flights are on sale – book with me today!

Top young softballers to take on Australia
with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The school holidays have arrived and, hopefully, so has some nice weather. Although, having said that, the wind looks like it will play a part over the next two weeks as is typical for this time of year. Wednesday looks the best day to get out and get a feed for the family. Scallops are in great condition around the Top of the South and in good numbers. Also, don’t forget the blue cod ban on the inner sounds is now in force, so please make sure you are familiar with the banned area and the rules about travelling through this zone with blue cod. Around the D’urville area there has been some great fishing, including schools of big snapper up to 70 80cm and some solid kingfish. Slow jigs are working well around this area and in depths of around 50-110m. The best technique for slow jigging is a very slow wind, and lighter braids (15lb or less) and leaders (1520lb) have been more effective than the heavier kit. With light leaders, ensure you try to set that hook early and in the mouth to avoid being bitten off. Micro jigs are proving effective, a lift and freefall technique is best. With the arrival of spring, snapper are starting to move south and in closer to shore, the best action is
around the 25-30m mark. Kayakers are starting to get some school fish which is a good indication that spring is on its way. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season starts on October 1 and now is the time to join the club. Every month we will have a club night or afternoon at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club, where we will usually have a guest speaker along with our monthly awards. Fish of the month, average weight species of the month, junior fisher persons of the month, and The Bugger Award. We will also run a meat raffle. So make sure you attend as these are a great night to catch up and at the least a way to find out where the fish are biting. As a club we welcome any new members wishing to learn, share and enjoy the Kiwi passion of fishing. Feel free to come along to that first Social Day on Saturday, October 11 at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club from 5pm, where we will have a guest speaker from MAF and our own speaker explaining how the club works. Membership forms are available online at our club website: www.sportsground.co.nz/dawn breakersfishingclub. Emails can be sent to: dawnbreakersfc@gmail.com or contact me after-hours on 027 445 4603.

Two of Nelson’s promising young softballers, Josh Kelly and Josh Grant, are preparing for a big step up in speed and power after leaving for Australia last weekend to prepare for an international tournament in Adelaide. The Waimea College students were named in the International Softball Academy under-15 team after performing well at the South Island tournament in Invercargill in January. Nelson defeated Canterbury to win the title with Josh Kelly finishing the tournament as the top pitcher and making the tournament team along with Josh Grant, Josh McPherson and Jamie Thompson. Josh Kelly says they are looking forward to their first international tournament but realise that it is going to be a big ask stepping up to international level without any lead-up games. “It’s going to be hard after not facing any batters all winter and then going over there and going straight into a big game. The speed of the game will be so much faster than anything we are used to but we’ve been training with (Black Sox legend) Marty Grant throughout

At least that will give us a chance to train together and get our combinations sorted out.” Josh Grant says he is confident they will be able to adapt to the speed and intensity of the games but will need to focus on eliminating errors. “There’s going to be some really good teams over there and the speed, not just of the pitch-

ing, will be a step up,” he says. “But the big thing will be not to make any mistakes - that’s what makes the difference at that level.” Nelson under-15 coach Nigel Kelly says Josh McPherson also did enough in Invercargill to gain selection for the ISA team but unfortunately had to pull out after injuring his knee in a rugby match. The ISA teams will play Victorian Academy and South Australian teams at the tournament in Adelaide which will be held from October 3 to 6.

Nelson Cricket: Without doubt, 2014 is the biggest summer in Nelson Cricket’s history, with three world cup games being played at Saxton Oval and the Blackcaps returning to play a one day international in January. “The cricket world cup is the world’s third biggest sporting event behind the Olympics and football world cup, so for little old Nelson to have three games is just amazing,” says Nelson Cricket’s Jon Routhan. “Then we have the Black Caps here on January 20, playing Sri Lanka.” The Nelson representative side is doing well and hope to challenge for the Hawke Cup this year, while the junior rep sides have performed very well over the last two seasons and hope to continue. Senior cricket starts October 11 and junior starts November 1. From a development perspective, Nelson Cricket are looking to get coaching and in-schools teaching into every school in the region.

Nelson teams win Spring Challenge Nelson athletes shone in a wet, grey Spring Challenge adventure race near Hokitika with Seagate’s Susie Wood joining Sophie Hart and Fleur Pawsey to win the nine hour section and Team Topzone and the Three Amigos winning their respective nine and six hour veteran’s titles. Seagate dominated the nine hour section of the all-women teams race that started with a short run to the rafting section through the Hokitika Gorge. That was followed by a series of mountainbiking and trekking stages and ended with a canoe section on Lake Kaniere and a mountainbike ride to the finish. Seagate led from the start to win in a superfast nine hours 38 minutes to finish just over an hour faster than second-placed Team El Rancho and third-placed Team Pure Blonde. Team R and R Sports with Nelson’s Ingrid Richter and Eloise Fry was fourth while veteran winners, Topzone’s Penny-Sue Franklin, Vicki Shelling and Jo Harris, were sixth overall in 11 hour 26 minutes and 50 seconds. “We could see Ingrid’s team behind for the first couple of stages but then we were out in front on our own for the rest of the race,” Susie says. “But we didn’t know how far ahead we were until the last transition when the support crew said we were in front by about an hour so we were able to relax a bit. “It was one of those days that went really smoothly. We didn’t make any mistakes and we worked really well as a team - Sophie and Fleur are amazing team-mates.” Susie says a mountainbiking section along the West Coast cycleway and the canoe across lake Kaniere were two of the highlights of the race. “I’ve ridden quite a few of the national cycleways but this one was amazing. The canoe back down the lake was a highlight too. It was such a great course we didn’t even notice the rain really. I think it was worse for all the supporters and marshals who had to stand in it all day.” The Three Amigos, Pam Morris, Jackie MacIntyre and Marjolein Edwards, all of Richmond, won the veteran six hour race in 5 hour 21 minutes and 2 seconds. Although the weather was abysmal, race coorganiser Jodie Fa’avae says it didn’t stop the competitors having a blast. “It should have been called the Mud Challenge not the Spring Challenge but all the girls embraced the weather and had a good time,” Jodie says. “Nathan (Fa’avae) and Mark (Rayward) did a really good job designing the course because we only had to make one change to the course because a creek was flooded.” Three hundred and fifty-six teams and 1068 women competed in this year’s Spring Challenge.

The Tasman District Council is to adopt a Significance and Engagement Policy. What is that you may ask? Engagement is a responsibility the Council takes very seriously. Community input to decisions is key to ensuring the views of residents and ratepayers are taken into account. Significance in this context is about how the Council will assess the ’significance ‘ of its decisions in relation to the effect they may have on people, assets, Council finances or the District as a whole. Once assessed it will determine and guide the level of engagement the Council should invest in. The Council already has separate policies for both significance and engagement however, recent amendments to the Local Government Act have determined there should be one policy covering both subjects. The Council has taken the opportunity to review the policies as a result of the legislative change and is looking for feedback prior to the policy’s adoption on 20 November 2014. The Significance and Engagement policy and feedback forms can be found online at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and in the Council’s service centres and libraries. Feedback closes 4.00 pm, 30 October 2014.

HFM would like to advise that 44,000 tonnes is now mature and will be harvested in accordance with market demands. In addition there is several younger age classes within the area to which harvesting is planned out to year 2027. HFM would like to take this opportunity to remind people that this forest is privately owned by a number of small land owners and therefore forested areas are not for public recreation. Also that traffic control measures will be in place to manage the hazards associated with harvesting, and that all signage and direction from crew must be adhered to ensure the safety of road users. Once harvest is complete this land will be managed in accordance with individual owners to their respective boundaries.
