People of all ages joined in the Colour Craze fun day at Saxton Field on Sunday morning, when everyone enjoyed the chance to get a little messy.

It’s the second year that the event has been run, organised by the Nelson Multicultural Council, Tasman Youth Council and Sport Tasman, with funding from Tasman District Council. “We’re really focused on promoting cultural diversity,

healthy lifestyles through fitness and exercise, and just bringing the community together,” says Tasman Youth Council member Taylah Shuker. “Last year was the first year it was run and this year we built on what we learnt to make it even bigger and

better.” As well as food carts, spot prizes, cultural performances and everybody’s favourite, colourful paint powder, participants also got their blood pumping with a 2.4km course that they either ran or walked.

The occupants of a Richmond house were lucky to escape unharmed after a burning marine flare was fired through their bedroom window in what police believe was “a targeted attack” on the property. Richmond police were called to the Marlborough Cres house shortly after the flare smashed through the bedroom window at around 6am on Monday. Senior sergeant Blair Hall says fortunately the sound from the smashing window woke the two occupants of the room who then threw a suitcase over the burning flare to contain the flames. “Those flares are designed to burn for a while and they are very hot,” Blair says. “It was lucky that it didn’t start a fire and cause some serious damage to the house.” Blair says Nelson CIB are investigating the incident which police believe was a targeted attack on the house. “We are following some lines of inquiry but we don’t think it was random – it appears the address was targeted. It was probably fired from a car, so it was a lucky shot.” Blair says anyone who witnessed anything suspicious outside the house should contact police on 03 5458960 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Police are also investigating an incident outside the Nelson Speedway on Saturday night when a teenage girl suffered minor injuries when she was stabbed in the leg at around 9pm.

Wakefield bus service proposal rejected Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Tasman District Council has rejected a proposal to fund an express bus service between Wakefield and Nelson after a preliminary study showed that the fares would be too high. Council has been investigating the proposal after receiving a petition in March asking for a trial of an express bus service between Wakefield and Nelson. Although the petition secured over 1000 signatures, members of council’s regional transport committee, chaired by councillor Stu Bryant, voted last week not to proceed any further with the project. The decision was based on a feasibility assessment commissioned by council that concluded

a Wakefield-Nelson express bus service would not receive enough “patronage and consequently have a very high fare cost per passenger”. The study conducted by a consultant concluded that fares could be between $23 to $55 for the trip from Wakefield to Richmond and between $31 and $73 from Wakefield to Nelson. “It wasn’t affordable,” Stu told the Waimea Weekly. “Once you get above $6 for a bus fare it’s not viable.” Stu says an express bus service may have been viable if there were express bus lanes that greatly reduced travel time between Wakefield and Nelson but that was not the case. It is also difficult to manage suitable bus timetables “because everyone starts and finishes work at different times these days,” he says.

Wakefield resident Delwyn Wasley supported a petition for an express bus from Wakefield to Nelson. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. However, the committee’s deci- the petition. Nelsust’s Kate Malsion is being criticised by sus- colm says the committee’s decitainable transport lobby group sion is outdated because public Nelsust which helped instigate transport is a more sustainable

option than having “one person per car” commuting to Nelson. “The decision was based entirely on cost and nothing else,” Kate says. “We are disappointed in the decision and think they should have looked at the bigger picture.” Kate also questioned the assumptions of that feasibility study and suggested the estimated cost of the service could be significantly reduced by keeping the bus overnight in Wakefield. She says employing a Wakefield resident as driver would also cut the costs.Kate says Nelsust would not give up and would “go back to the drawing board” to try and find a solution for Wakefield’s commuters. The committee did agree that a proposed Richmond-loop service would advance to a business case and possibly to a trial.

War-time relics uncovered? Jessie Johnston & Charles Anderson It is a mystery that was almost lost to the sands of time. Brendan Morton was walking his dog along the beach on Thursday afternoon when he came across a family who’d begun to unearth some concrete treasures. “You could see that they were kind of moulded to be something, but we weren’t sure what they were,” says Brendan. “Then on Saturday morning, we were down there again with the dog and the kids were back into it, so I got my wife to go home and get the spades and me and my daughter joined in and started digging it up.”

Pictures were then posted on social media and a number of suggestions were put forward by the community. However, the most interesting theory is that the pieces were once part of a WW2 fortification. “It’s all still together, so it doesn’t really add up that it would have washed there, all the elements are almost touching each other,” he says. The Waimea Weekly has taken up the challenge to clear up the mystery. The Nelson City Council did not know what it could be but the Nelson Provincial Museum’s registrar Meredith Rimmer was more enthusiastic, referring the newspaper to local aviation historian Graeme McDowell.

Motorcycle & Marine

After taking a look at the structure, Graeme explained how there were barbed wire and machine gun emplacements all along the beach in preparation for a potential Japanese attack during WW2. There was even an anti-aircraft gun near where Natureland is now. “But it’s a bit hard to say what these might be. It’s certainly good to get people thinking though,” says Graeme. Shelley Doherty of the Museum filled in some of the gaps, gleaned from their archives. “We are not sure that the concrete treasures found are, in fact, from the airfield,” Shelley says. The Waimea Weekly will update the story as more information comes to light.

Cheryl battles rare disease Judene Edgar Reporter

judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A visit to the dentist is the thing of nightmares for most people, but for Cheryl Thibodeau, a trip to the dentist saved her life. It was October 2010 and Cheryl had been having recurring earaches and gingivitis. While being treated, the hospital dentist noticed that Cheryl’s teeth were looking “odd”, so she decided to take a photo to discuss with a colleague. “The next morning I got a call saying ‘come in now’,” Cheryl says. Within two months the young single mother of two was undergoing open heart surgery that lead to an induced coma. She was eventually diagnosed with an extreme form of Wegener’s granulomatosis. Wegener’s is an incredibly rare autoimmune, necrotising disease that attacks the blood vessels throughout the body. “At this stage they still don’t know how you get it, and there’s no cure,” she says. In Cheryl’s case, it has primarily affected her heart, lungs, eyes, ears and trachea. Treatment is aimed at suppressing the im-

mune system so that it doesn’t attack the body’s own organs, as well as surgeries and medication to repair the damage the disease has caused. “I was lucky they came up with a diagnosis so quickly. If that dentist hadn’t taken those photos and asked her colleague … they saved my life, basically.” Despite getting to the stage where she could no longer walk, eat, see or talk, Cheryl says her most valuable surgery was the cochlea implant. “My son hadn’t started talking properly when I lost my hearing and the very first words I heard after the surgery were ‘I love you mummy’, which was so precious and emotional,” she says. Cheryl says that the driving factor for the implant surgery and for everything she does to manage the disease is her two children. “I’ve got two gorgeous children and I want to be around to raise them.” Now in remission, her everyday still involves ongoing treatments and appointments as well as managing arthritis, chronic fatigue, pseudo gout and vertigo. The cochlea implant, pacemaker, mechanical heart valves and sternal wires from her

open-heart surgeries also mean Cheryl has a lot of internal metal that, among other things, interferes with her sleep. “I don’t want to be a tired and grumpy mum, my children have been through enough,” she says. Cheryl has recently learned that a memory foam mattress can be beneficial for her sleep as it doesn’t interfere with the embedded body metal. It also reduces pressure points and the bed allows a zero-gravity position to assist with her breathing, circulation and joint pain. “It’s hard to go from being fiercely independent to having to ask for help,” says Cheryl. “My family and friends have been amazingly supportive, and in some ways it’s rougher on them, because they have to stand by and feel helpless.” But her need to find ways to enhance her quality of life and have some degree of normality, led her to start a Givealittle page to raise funds to purchase the specialised bed with memory foam mattress. She has secured a half price deal from Harvey Norman, but needs to raise $6000. To support Cheryl, you can donate at givealittle. co.nz/cause/medicalbed.

Cheryl Thibodeau is raising funds for a much-needed therapeutic mattress. Photo: Judene Edgar. Kim and Gareth Rosser of GK Events at the very first Great Big Little Wedding Show on Sunday, at Club Waimea. “We’ve got so many really great wedding professionals in Nelson, I just thought it would be good to get them all in one place and have a show that was accessible to all of the public,” says organiser Brenda Robinson. The 27 exhibitors covered everything from guest entertainment, beauty and flowers, to marquees, first dances, wedding attire and marriage celebrants. Brenda says they were extremely happy with public attendance throughout the day, with around 89 people turning up in the first half hour of the show. With a successful first show behind them, organisers and exhibitors look forward to returning next year to help local couples plan their big day. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Alan’s a Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sort Alan Kissell, left, received a $100 voucher from Stihl Shop Richmond owner Grant Blanchet last week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg

Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Menzshed Waimea coordinator Alan Kissell has already received a Kiwibank Local Hero Award and National Volunteer Award from the Corrections Department for his contribution to the community. And now Alan is the first winner of the Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sorts Award after being nominated by Menzshed Richmond chairman George Inglis. Alan helped set up Menzshed Richmond five years ago and now it’s a great place where “older men can catch up and hone old skills and younger men can learn new skills”, George says in his nomination. Although the Menzshed was initially set up for older men, it has extended its programmes to help a wide range of people including college students, offenders on community work sentences and people with intellectual disabilities. Its membership has grown rapidly from 30 to around 180 and its premises at the A & P Showgrounds has been extended to include an engineering shed and storage facilities. Grant Blanchet Alan received a $100 Stihl Shop Richmond voucher from the store’s owner Grant Blanchet, who is a big fan of the Menzshed. In fact, Grant regularly provides “bits and pieces” from their workshop to the Menzshed for their engineering projects. “They do a great job down there and Alan is a big part of that,” Grant says. Not surprisingly, Alan says he will be using the $100 voucher to purchase some useful items for the Menzshed workshops. People can nominate anyone from the Waimea Weekly’s distribution area for the award by emailing editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz. The email needs to explain why the nominee deserves to be a Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sort and include contact details so we can publish a story and photo of the monthly winner in the Waimea Weekly.

Nelson City Brass celebrates 160th Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

One of the oldest brass bands in the country will be celebrating its 160th birthday this weekend when it performs a world premiere at a Gala Concert in Nelson’s Theatre Royal. The Nelson City Brass was formed as part of the region’s military services in 1857 and this Saturday it celebrates its 160th anniversary with a street march and a Gala Concert. To make the big day extra special, the band will be wearing new uniforms and will play the world premiere of a composition entitled Tasman Bay that it commissioned for the anniversary. “The band was formed by the early settlers and because the army were involved it was called the Nelson Garrison Band,” band secretary Wayne Jennens says. “Then that was changed to the Nelson Municipal Band and finally the Nelson City Brass – it’s not official but we are claiming the title of the oldest brass band in the country.” And now it has become one of the best bands in the country after winning the national C grade

Nelson City Brass won the C grade competition at nationals earlier this year. competition for the second consecutive year in May. Six of its members also helped the National Band of New Zealand finish second at the World Music Contest in the Netherlands and Wayne says that’s largely due to the influence of musical director Nigel Weeks. “We have won every single contest we have been in since Nigel started at the beginning of 2016. He comes from a background of

excellence and he’s been the key to our improvement. “We’ve also been very lucky to get good support from the Nelson City Council and a number of pub charities. It costs a lot to get to the contests, especially when they are in the North Island.” Although the band is becoming more competitive and professional, Wayne says it remains “very family-orientated with lots of couples and fathers and sons”,

and players of all ages. The youngest members include teens Jake McNaughton, Ben Kirby and Natania Ngawhau while the oldest, 98-year-old Maurice Abrahams, has just retired from playing. Wayne says Tasman Bay was written by English composer Dan Price. The band will open its gala concert with the piece which he says reflects the places and people of Nelson. The concert will feature special guest artist Jackie

Clarke. Steve Miles, who is regarded as one of the finest euphonium players in the world, will also play at the concert. The street march will be held on upper Trafalgar St starting at 10.30am while the Gala Concert starts at 4.30pm. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for children and students, and can be purchased at the Theatre Royal or through Ticket Direct by phoning 0800224224.

'Badass' scientist moves to Nelson And the astronomer says Donald Trump's Mars strategy is all wrong Charles Anderson He has an asteroid and a science fiction robot named after him. He has worked on space programmes around the world, authored hundreds of articles on all matters celestial and helped produce an Emmy-winning documentary. He even introduced the Sex Pistols at one of the band’s first-ever gigs, in 1975. And now, Duncan Steel also has some bad news for President Donald Trump. Despite being named as one of the most “badass scientists” in the world, Duncan has kept a low profile since moving to Nelson two years ago. Instead he has focused on writing two new books to add to his anthology. One of these proposes that instead of trying to send humans to Mars, we should be looking at sending bacteria instead. Trump has proposed putting a human on the surface of Mars during his presidency. “That’s just not going to happen,” Duncan says. “It’s too expensive, it’s too dangerous to send humans there and

the probability for success is too small. There are too many things to go wrong.” Duncan should know. The English-born astronomer first came to New Zealand in the 1980s to set up a radar station near Christchurch for observing meteors. He also helped create the first efforts to search the Southern Sky for “near earth objects” that might collide with the planet. Since then, the Royal Astronomical Society member has worked on space programmes across the world, including NASA and the European Space Agency, and also advised the Australian Department of Defence. Duncan’s work also led to a minor planet/asteroid formally named for him by the International Astronomical Union — (4713) Steel — and also a lunar-roving robot, again called ‘Steel’, in one of Arthur C. Clarke’s novels. He also claims to have introduced the Sex Pistols at their first ever gig at Queen Elizabeth College in London. His latest project, however, is working on a book advocating spreading genetically-engineered microbial life for all extra-terres-

Photo: Charles Anderson. trial locations found to be barren. “I don’t think we are going to find life elsewhere in the solar system,” Duncan says. “So, we should be thinking about seeding it.” He says there is a window of opportunity to start developing bacterial life that could survive in an environment like Mars. “If no life can be found on Mars, and I bet on that, then that is not to say there couldn’t be life on Mars. That will be an unpopular idea for people who think there is life there.”

He says the timescale for “terraforming” Mars, or making it inhabitable for humans, is many thousands of years. The simple motivation for his idea is that he believes that “life is good”. Duncan says bacteria contains seven percent of DNA that humans have. So, in the same way that we have an interest in our fellow humans and our environments because we are related to those things, there should be a similar interest

in spreading our related bacteria. “If we insert bacterial life on Mars we would be ensuring our genes will continue. It sounds airy fairy but if could be a unifying thing for humans to do.” He thinks the “ballyhoo” of sending humans to Mars needs to stop. He hopes, instead, that the conversation can be shifted to sending other life into the Solar System. Currently all Mars missions have been sterile to avoid contaminating the planet. However, he believes soon we will start thinking the other way – about making sure that life does make its way there. “But unless we start talking about it now then it won’t happen,” he says. “People think about keeping places pristine, I’m more interested in people than keeping Mars pristine.” Duncan will speak to the Nelson Science Society on Thursday at 7.30pm at the Cawthron Institute about one of his side hobbies – the research of eclipses through history and how they have helped shape world events.

By now all Tasman households should have received their copy of the Summary Consultation Document for the Waimea Community Dam. Both the summary, the full Statement of Proposal and supporting information is available online at tasman.govt.nz. If you have further questions there are a number of FAQs that may provide the answers, if not ask via info@tasman.govt.nz or come to one of the public drop-in sessions being held throughout the District.

Teaching safety skills Judene Edgar There was crawling beneath smoke-filled rooms, clambering under tables, checking unconscious children who had fallen out of their tree-house and lots of 111 calls at the A&P Showgrounds this week, but it was all in the name of safety education. Clued Up Kids coordinator Jo Perrett says, “it’s all about different types of safety – boats, dogs, water, cycle, home, road.” The week-long ‘Clued Up Kids’ event returned bigger than ever after a successful pilot last year. ACC, police, Fire Emergency NZ, civil defence, dog control, harbourmaster, cycle safety and Red Cross were on hand to provide informative safety experiences for the children. Over the course of the week, 640 Year five and six pupils from seven schools take part in a range of safety activities. Jo says that it’s a great opportunity for children to learn from the professionals. “Children over 10 are gaining in independence so it’s important that they have safety strategies both in the house and away from home, to keep themselves safe.” Fire and Emergency NZ had an inflatable ‘’burning’’ house that

children were required to crawl through to find their way out. Richmond Fire Brigade’s deputy chief fire officer Nigel Lammas says they were also teaching the children about having escape plans and a safe meeting place in the event of a fire, as well as how to make a 111 call. Year six pupil Ronan Moorhead from St Paul’s says that it helps you to look at things differently. “It makes you more aware of what can happen,” Ronan says. While he found some of the activities “really fun”, others were a bit “nerve-wrecking”, such as ringing 111. He says that he found the cycle safety activity helpful, particularly the ‘stop’ hand signal and learning about bike safety checks. Members of Richmond Rotary and Lions clubs were on hand to support the day. Rotarian Graham Hosie says that he was surprised how much he learnt himself. “The kids are so attentive and it’s such a good opportunity for them.” Based on the highly-successful Blenheim programme, Jo says that they run pre- and post-event surveys. “The survey results show a really big increase in the children’s knowledge of the safe action to take in various situations,” Jo says.

Holly off to world champs

Holly Dickison, centre, will be representing New Zealand at the Irish Dance World championships in the Netherlands next year. The 17-year-old Waimea College student, who has been Irish Dancing for nine years, is a student at the ASTAR Academy in Nelson.

Simon Bloomberg Waimea College student Holly Dickison will be making her international debut next year when she competes at the prestigious World Irish Dance Association’s worlds champs in the Netherlands. Holly, 17, has been Irish dancing for nine years, joining the ASTAR Academy of the Arts in Nelson two years ago. She has made giant strides under the tutelage of ASTAR teacher Lucy Moignard and was invited to the worlds after “being spotted” by international judge Kevin Cannon. Kevin initially saw Holly perform at an Irish Dance exam at ASTAR in 2016. When Kevin saw Holly dancing at the First Nelson New Zealand Open Feis last month he considered that she had “improved so much that she would have a good chance of winning at the worlds”. “I was so shocked. I thought I’d go to the exam and get a pass and then go to the competition and that would be it. “But now I’m going to the worlds. I’m so excited, it’s a really amazing opportunity.” But Kevin’s encouragement wasn’t the only good news for Holly – he has also secured a European sponsor to pay for all the expenses to get her to the world champs. Holly’s selection for the world champs continues a great year for the talented dancer who had earlier scored almost 100 per cent at this year’s Irish Dance exam session and championship. She is now a grade seven dancer and on the way to becoming a grade 11 dancer and qualified teacher. Holly, who is planning to study make-up artistry in Wellington after she leaves school at the end of this year, says she can thank her mum for awakening her interest in Irish Dancing. “When I was very little my mum always used to put Irish music on and I’d dance to it. One day she took me along to an Irish dance class and I was so upset, I didn’t want to go, but then I saw what they were doing and I loved it.” Holly says she enjoys both styles of Irish Dance, “soft shoe, which is more like ballet and hard shoe, which is more like tap dancing but without using your arms”. She hopes to continue her studies so she can eventually sit her grade 11 exams to qualify as a teacher. Three Nelson dancers also won championship titles at the Nelson Feis including Ellamae Withington (under-8 champion), Elizabeth Holt (under-11 champion) and and Jaymee Niamh Smith (under-17 champion). The world champs will be held in Maastricht in the Netherlands from April 5 to 8.

Logging from yesteryear Judene Edgar Reporter

judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Rex Kelly might have stopped getting paid to be a forestry worker, but that hasn’t dimmed his passion for logging. The former owner of Kelly and Son Forestry and Logging is now putting his time and energy, voluntarily, into managing the forestry activities at Higgins Heritage Park. The park has monthly “steam up” days, but this month Rex is planning something a little different with a ‘logging and forestry activities of yesteryear’ display. “It’s always a fun family day out, but this month it will also be a great opportunity to see some old forestry and logging technology in action,” says Rex. Park manager Allan Palmer says that getting to see everything in action is a key drawcard for the museum, and is looking forward to having the steampowered Skyline logging winch operating on the day. Logs will be pulled by the steam winch and then loaded onto a trailer pulled by traction engine before heading by rail to the mill

for processing. There will also be wood and jiggerboard chopping, chainsaw and crosscut saw demonstrations, wire rope slicing and some fun team events. Rex is looking forward to demonstrating the vintage 1940 Sankey Aspin chainsaw. “That’s my favourite ol’ girl,” he says. Stihl Shop Richmond are also looking forward to being there on the day. Owner Grant Blanchet says that they will have some ride ons and other gear on display and will be helping organise the team events and chainsaw demonstrations. “They’re a great bunch of guys and it’s great to get in behind it,” says Grant. “It’s good for young kids to see how things use to be,” he says. In addition to the action-packed logging and forestry events, there will be a children’s tug-of-war, lawnmower racing as well as ice creams and smoothies. Allan says people are also welcome to bring along their own food to cook on the barbeques. The logging day is on Sunday, November 5, from 10am to 3pm at 222 Pigeon Valley Rd, Wakefield. $5 for adults and children under 12 are free.

The night sky was lit up with an array of lights, colours and sounds in full view of a packed house at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The Coca-Cola fireworks meeting is Nelson’s premier fireworks display and it didn’t disappoint the many eyes looking skyward on the calm Saturday evening. The display opened with a huge fire ball before the multitude of rockets filled the sky, finishing with a rapid succession of explosions and a double fire ball that lit up the arena. On the track, the stock cars kept the crowd enthralled all night. Roll overs and big hits in every race made for some fantastic viewing. The first to be parked up the wall was Josh Nell, left high and dry by Troy Curry. Dylan Clarke was lucky not to go over again after being rolled last meeting, the car up on two wheels for a long stretch. The next one to be put up

There will be a few drivers with sore bodies and plenty of work to do on their cars in preparation for the Stock Car Teams Brawl next meeting. The Sprint Cars made their first outing for the season. They will get plenty of track time with good growth in numbers locally, as they have two rounds of the “War of the Wings Series” plus the South Island title here this year. It was an unfortunate start on heat one for Alicia MacLauchlan and Connor Rangi, a second corner crash along the wall leaving Connor upside down in his newly-purchased car, causing some serious damage. Alicia was more fortunate with a flat tyre ending her race. Kris Gerard ran away from Jason Smith in chase. Jason then won the last two races to take out the Trackman Trophy for the night from Alicia and

The first round of the Southern Midget Series was run with regular visitor and South Island Champion Jeremy Webb a level above the rest of the drivers in heat one, winning by a country mile. However, major engine failure in the opening laps of heat two put him out for the night. It was then a battle between Glen Durie, Tom Lumsden and local driver Gavin Wilkie to fight for the points. It was Tom who got on the outside and took a comfortable win. The next meeting is on Saturday, November 11. Benchrest is known as the “super accuracy” game of the shooting sports with competitors attempting to put a shot on the target, followed by four more through the same hole. And with team events you have all four members aiming for the same hole. “We are the only sport where it can only get worse after the first shot,” laughs organiser Graeme Smith. Teams from Canada, Italy, Finland, France, South Africa, United States, Australia and New Caledonia as well as individual competitors from Luxembourg, Indonesia, Argentina and Namibia will be competing in the 10-day event. Graeme says that organising the biennial championships has been a massive undertaking, four years in the planning. “It’s a big effort, but it’s the second time we’ve hosted the event and last time was such a success,” he says. Unfortunately for Graeme, hosting duties means that he won’t be shooting this year. The New Zealand record holder and Oceania silver medallist has shot at nine world championships and organised two. The world championships were last held in Nelson in 2001. “It’s all about the competition,” Graeme says. SAVINGS “It’s an individual sport, so at the end of the day you’re really competing against yourself.” ONLINE The teams start out with four days of practice before settling in for five days of solid competition. A Nelson hockey stalwart was the inspiration behind a new Town v Country fixture. Mark Wilkens died while playing hockey at Saxton Field in 2015. Last week a new trophy named

in his memory was up for grabs in the inaugural Town v Country game at Saxton Field. The teams were split with “town” players coming from Nelson and the “country” players from Stoke and Richmond. The teams were mixed with some younger and older players, with the country team coming out on top 3-2.

The trophy was commissioned by Jamie Brown and created by Kieran Cleary, both teachers at Nelson College where Mark attended in the mid-1970s. Jamie says it was a great way to remember a man who had given so much to the game, both in Nelson and at a national level. “We wanted to play a game in

Mark’s honour which we think he would have appreciated, and thought this annual Town v Country concept was a great way for players to get together and compete, who did not necessarily belong to the same clubs,” he says. “Although a trophy was up for grabs, the game was played in

such high spirits and fair play which I think Mark would have appreciated. I am sure all players are looking forward to this event continuing and the friendly rematches that will occur in the years to come”. After the game, the trophy was presented by Kathy Wilkens, Mark’s widow.

Swimmers dash into the water in the Clements Windows and Doors Ironman distance sea swim at Tahunanui Beach.

Sea swimmers ready for opening Peter Gibbs The 31st summer of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series begins next Thursday with a season of 18 weekly swims continuing through to March 8. Regular sea swimming started in Nelson when Peter Owen of Eyebright got together with a group of keen swimmers for a dip in the choppy waters off Tahunanui Beach. The Eyebright sea swims continued for two decades, with the Nelson Triathlon Club taking over the organisation under the sponsorship of Port Nelson in 2007.

Since then, the series has grown steadily, with weekly attendance in the region of 150 and numbers climbing to nearly 200 at the peak of the season. Two swims are on offer each week, with a shorter course starting at about 300m and a longer swim of about 800m - the distances increase throughout the season. In addition to the weekly events, the Clements Endurance Series of four longer swims takes participants on a tour of harbour highlights, with the longest being a 3.8km Ironman-distance swim on January 14. The founding connection is kept

alive with the annual Eyebright Mile, which is actually a 2km swim, from the Nelson Yacht Club to Tahunanui Beach on Sunday December 31. The final Clements swim is the 2.8km circuit of Haulashore Island on Sunday March 18. In a bonus for Nelson swimmers, the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series comes to Nelson on March 31. About 800 swimmers from around the country are expected to take part. For more information and to enter the Nelson series, check www. nelsonseaswims.co.nz

s w e N g n i h s Fi Fishing together with Dawnbreakers Andrea Fensom Fishing for fun used to be mainly a man’s domain. A few of us fisherwomen have proved that we can do it too. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has a lot of women members these days, providing great friendly rivalry. Snapper fishing is my favourite and my personal best was over 23lb - it was a lot of fun to catch. But I cannot boast the biggest snapper in our house – my husband’s fish was a mere pound heavier! We have a great team thing going on – generally he does most of the fishy smelly jobs and I sort the food. This seems to work very well and I am sure a few other “better halves” have a similar arrangement. Recently we had the privilege of attending a very interesting talk on game fishing with Tony Orton from Mangawhai just north of Auckland. Tony and Bea own a charter business and not only do they do charters from their home (with accommodation available) but they also take paying guests overseas to do amazing trips for big game fishing. Also, we had the Coastguard visit the Dawnbreakers Club rooms to do a talk on safety – vital for any recreational fishers. Sadly the Coastguard people have too many tragic stories to tell. Incidents that could have been avoided with a bit more care and knowledge of boating and the sea conditions. BIG BLUE Hint: If your boat is noisy, say aluminium, then fish in over 16 metres of water and most of all be quiet on the boat. No music and leave noisy mates at home! Snapper in particular are very timid fish.

Steve Page Being familiar with jetboats is only a small advantage when it comes to jetboat racing, especially the seven legs up and down some of the South Island's major rivers. This year was no different, but the boats were. Everything from ex-helicopter jet engines pumping out 1500hp to the normal V8s were on show at the Jetboat World Championship Marathon. And part of that scene is local jetboater and world champs stalwart Rob Pooley. Historically teamed with his brother Mike over many years, they were separate entrants this

time around. And this year Mike finished third, while Rob was back in ninth. Running aground in the Dart River leg pushed Rob's time back, making a top five finish just out of reach. The event was overshadowed with the tragic death of one of the competitors, Dwayne "Dweeb" Insley, when he was hit by a log that was exposed at head height after recent flooding in the Waimakariri River. To understand the skill needed by the drivers and navigators, some of these boats cruise at around 180kmh with the jet engine-powered boats capable of 280kmh. In some cases, when an obstacle presents itself

there is no time to avoid it and, like most boats, there are no brakes. The event was won by a jetpowered boat driven by Blenheim's John Derry with Regan Williamson five minutes behind in second, in a boat powered by an ex-Navy Wasp helicopter engine. Waimea Weekly spoke to Regan and asked him about the engine and, in particular, the maintenance. He says that not only does the engine produce amazing power, they have run it for five seasons. New Zealanders took the first 19 places in the event. Competitors came from New Zealnd, the US and Mexico.

Coming home on top Tasman United are two from two and lead the national football league Andrew Board

Tasman United has had the perfect start to the national football league and it will be hoping for the perfect home-coming this Sunday. Tasman started the ISPS Handa Premiership with two road games -- against Hamilton Wanderers and Canterbury United. It won them both and now sits top of the competition in just its second season in the top-flight. Tasman coach Davor Tavich says he's a happy man. "It's not a bad start. It's still early days but we're very happy with

how we started." The latest win came against Canterbury in Christchurch on Sunday, with teenager Callan Elliot scoring the winner late in the game. Davor says the region is blessed with top young players and he was delighted to see Callan get the winner. "We have a lot of young talent in Nelson, a lot of young boys aged 18 and 19 at a good level. He's very happy and we're happy with him." Despite the strong start, Davor says Tasman will need to re-set and prepare well for Southern United this Sunday at Trafalgar Park. "I think in this league any-

body can beat anybody, we're not going to take them lightly. Southern are a very good team, they have a lot of quality. It is not an easy three points, by any means." While another win is top of Davor's wish-list he's also hoping for a strong, vocal crowd. "The boys love [Trafalgar Park] and I love it too. We love the atmosphere, we have a passionate home crowd and we're hoping for a big crowd this Sunday." Davor says the entire squad is fit and healthy and available for selection this weekend. Kick off this Sunday at Trafalgar Park is 2pm and entry is free.

Popular ultra-runner races his last trail One of the country’s original ultra-runners, Nelson’s Colin Rolfe, has passed away after a long and illustrious career and less than a month after running in one of his favourite events. Colin, 56, who died suddenly of natural causes in Christchurch last week, was a former winner of the Kepler Challenge, Dun Run and Abel Tasman Coastal Classic, a race he made his own competing in every edition since it started in 1994. Colin completed his 24th Coastal Classic and final race just over two weeks ago, finishing fourth in his age group. One of his running friends, Stu

Cotham, says Colin was a “typical, rugged good keen man” who could “often to be found on the hills and trails around the area”. Stu says Colin knew the “backcountry considerably better than most and had climbed and tramped much of the South Island’s back country and had, over the years, been a keen competitor in a great many prestigious national, off-road, distance running events”. Colin had won the 60km Kepler Challenge (twice), the Tararua Mountain Race (multiple times) and “even our local Dun Run when it really was a lot tougher”. He was known as a super-tough

competitor, once finishing the Kepler Challenge after taking a nasty fall and breaking a bone in his leg – he also completed an epic 60-day solo, unsupported, tramp along the length of the South Island following the main divide the whole way. Able Tasman Coastal Classic organiser Graeme West says Colin was “certainly a very humble guy, but highly competitive whenever he stood on the start line”. “In his elite days, everything was precisely planned and put into place. #FinZ Up It’s been a rollercoaster of a season for the Tasman Makos who once again fought their way through to the Mitre 10 Cup premiership final. However, Saturday night’s game at AMI stadium ended in disappointment for the team as they failed to take the win on New Zealand provincial rugby’s biggest stage, suffering their third Mitre 10 Cup premiership final defeat in four years. Once again, the cup was presented to a victorious Canterbury after a match that saw both sides give it their all. Things certainly didn’t start in Canterbury’s favour with centre Levi Aumua stunning the crowd with the game’s opening try. Mitch Hunt then followed things up with a conversion and subsequent penalty, pushing Tasman to a 10-0 lead. Canterbury weren’t far behind though as No. 10 Richie Mo’unga achieved two solo tries to put the favourites ahead 12-10, after 24 minutes. With the points building against them, Tasman’s only choice was to throw everything into attack, however an equally strong Canterbury defence met their efforts. Reserve halfback Jack Stratton eventually scored Canterbury’s only

second half try, followed by a Mo’unga conversion that saw a full-time score of 35-13. “It’s a funny one because I think we probably played better than what we did last year,” says Tasman Makos manager, Martyn Vercoe. “The score line probably blew out a little bit at the end and, you know, you have to pay respect to a pretty good Canterbury team. The key thing is the guys played their hearts out and sure, they’ll be disappointed,

One of our main motivations is to do well for our community and knowing that they’re proud of us is massive.” While their finals defeat was no doubt heart-breaking for players and fans, the Tasman Makos have certainly seen some highs in a season they can be proud of. Canterbury delivered a decisive earlyseason statement of intent with a 39-0 win, followed by Tasman’s shock loss to Manawatu. However, things picked up for the side when they took the win from Waikato and ended Wellington’s unbeaten run. Tasman defeated Otago, putting themselves into premiership contention before enhancing their claims to a playoff spot with a comfortable win over Southland. Their match against Taranaki was hampered by Viliami Lolohea’s red card and their temporary drop to 13 men in the second half, allowing the opposition to cruise to a 40-26

Next up was North Harbour who went down to Tasman 21-0, before Auckland’s 31-18 defeat secured Tasman’s spot in the semi-final. Their loss to Counties Manukau was not what Tasman had in mind going into the playoffs, but they redeemed themselves when they beat top qualifiers Taranaki, 30-29. “With guys getting picked in different teams and injuries and all that type of stuff it was

hard to have a stable squad together, but I think it showed our character as an organisation and a team, we just kept managing to tick things off and get the results we needed, it’s just we couldn’t quite go the whole hog,” says Martyn. The Tasman Mako’s achievements on the pitch this season are all the more remarkable considering four of their top players are currently with the All Blacks. “To have four

of them, it just shows where we’re going as an organisation,” says Martyn. “It is a little bit bitter-sweet because we’re so proud of them, but it does obviously put some pressure on our resources although the guys that did come in for them did a good job.” It’s the most players Tasman has produced for the national side in one season and while Tim Perry, David Havili, Liam Squire and Kane Hames all

Kelly Bowater, second from right, with participants of the Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Breast Cancer event, at Richmond Tennis Club on Sunday morning. The event was set to take place at seven different clubs around the region, however rain put a stop to things in Wakapuaka, Motueka and Golden Bay. Golden Bay has rescheduled its event for Tuesday, November 7, at 5.30pm and Wakapuaka club has rescheduled for Sunday, November 12, at 10am. In its second year, the event saw an hour-long exercise session on court to help highlight the importance of exercise for mental and physical wellbeing and to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Nelson Bays Tennis Association regional coordinator Ali McQuillan says they were thrilled with the event and were pleased to see a great number of men and children coming out to support the cause too. Richmond, Nelson, Hope and Mapua clubs averaged around 30 participants each on the day, together raising around $1000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
