Public swarms to resurrected Santa Parade Those responsible for breathing new life into Richmond’s Santa Parade are ‘thrilled to bits’ with the way the event ran and was supported on Saturday. Parade manager Lisa Norriss who, together with Daniel Allan form theatre company Body In Space, says they put a huge amount of organisation into and relied on a tremendous community spirit to pull off a wonderful result.

“The weather worked in our favour which was so important for great success, and I’m really glad the general public embraced the occasion. Hundreds of parents and grandparents from all over the district brought their little ones and you could see by their faces that the magic of Christmas is still alive and well,” says Lisa. Forty floats, vehicles and groups on

foot, divided evenly among schools, community groups and business houses, made up the parade which flowed down Queen St, into Cambridge St and then returned. Wakefield Rest Home and Methodist Church children combined to win the Best Float award while Stoke Montessori School was judged best in the schools and pre-schools section.

School dental services in the Waimea district are being centralized at Henley School with state of the art equipment meaning an almost painless experience for students. We asked a few adults for their enduring memories of the school dental nurse.

“It was a time of fear and trepidation. These days it’s painless with the modern equipment.”

“We all dreaded the old slow speed burr drill. It put me off going to the dentist for many years after I left school.”

“We all called the dental clinic the murder house and the reality of going was as bad as the perception.”

“I had a terrible experience with a school dental nurse so after that visit I went to a private clinic for the rest of my school days.”

This new centre has it all,” says John who admits as soon as he “caught wind” of Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board’s (NMDHB) plan to centralize school dental services, “I

pushed pretty hard to get the centre built at Henley. It makes sense, we’re the biggest school and very centrally located; we were able to negotiate selling an ideal piece of a land for the new centre and have since purchased a handy adjacent section which will become parking lots for visitors’ cars.” John says just as parents accompany their children to appointments to see medical practitioners so they should be in attendance for dental checkups and repairs, a sentiment Call the friendly professionals at Geoff Lingard, NMDHB clinic OLDRIDGE ELECTRICAL director of oral health services & APPLIANCE SERVICING LTD totally agrees with. “This is very much (an oral Sponsor disease) prevention inspired Check out our website to see what other move, particularly for the brands we can service www.oldridgeelectrical.co.nz benefit of families with very young children and this will PHONE 547 6904

certainly increase our opportunities for parent education. You can send all sorts of messages and literature about proper oral care home but there’s often nothing so effective as a chat between the dentist and the parent based on specific cases,” says Geoff. Meanwhile Wakefield School principal Peter Ross says, “I can see where the health board’s policy is coming from and while it obviously suits Henley families we have a strong preference out here to be serviced by a mobile clinic, which is an option we’re presently discussing with the health board. There’s still the opportunity for parents to come along but it allows parents who really aren’t able for one reason or other to take what could amount to be a day away from work, twice a year, to avoid such inconvenience or even some hardship,” he says.

Ulysses Toy Run turns 25 Hundreds of motorcyclists take to the roads this Saturday, December 4, in a procession of silver for the annual Ulysses Nelson Toy Run. Celebrating 25 years of collection, motorcyclists from all over the Top of the South and the West Coast are being asked to decorate themselves and machines in silver to mark the silver jubilee of the Toy Run. The event attracts motorbikes of all sizes decorated and adorned with various gifts for distribution to the region’s children by the local branch of the Salvation Army. The aim of the ride is to give gifts to the needy, and the Salvation Army follows the convoy of bikes to collect toys from people on the roadside. Rather than Richmond Park riders will assemble at Papps Car Park in Cambridge Street, at 10am before departing at 11am. Motorcycles head to Nelson, through Richmond’s town centre, bound for Trafalgar Centre carpark.

Gibbons Construction site foreman Bruce Stewart urges Lower Queen St Medical Centre partners Garth Smith, Llyn Powell and Mike Roberts to dig faster in order to keep the project on schedule.

Tenants waiting with patient anticipation

Bruce Stewart, Gibbons Construction site foreman at Lower Queen St Medical Centre, says he’s never had it so good. “I’ve been overseeing construction for the company for many years and the set-up for me here in terms of an office facility to work out of and rooms for my staff is the best I’ve ever had,” Bruce told a group of LQS Holdings stakeholders at an informal meeting on the site. “And fittingly so; this is a very impressive project we’re working on – it will be a landmark building for this region both inside and out,” he adds. After a slow start and minor hiccups work on what could be the region’s largest medical facility outside the public hospital has quickly caught up to schedule and should be completed by the middle of 2011. “Some GPs are very keen to be in by July and that

looks likely,” says Llyn Powell, local veterinarian and member of the centre development group. The centre, with 2500 square metres floor space, will include GP clinics (Cambridge Medical Centre doctors relocating) and specialists in optometry, audiology (Hearing Advantage), physiotherapy, paediatrics (Garth Smith), ear, nose and throat (Mike Roberts), ophthalmology (Derek Sherwood) and is looking to expand to include other specialists. A pharmacy and a café will also be part of the complex. “We’ve confirmed about 80 percent of our tenants and everyone involved is excited about getting started here,” says Llyn. “It seems from our observation and feedback the provision of a broad range of medical services under one roof will be well received in the Richmond district.”

College chuffed with super gym Waimea College Board of Trustees chair Annette Nistor described to an attentive crowd - including students, staff, guests and local businesses, and supporters of the school - the bumpy path to opening the fantastic new gymnasium built to international standards. “This vision has been in the pipeline since the late 1990s, but good things come to those who show patience as well as tenacity, endurance and politeness just as [principal] Larry Waimea College sports director Daniel Hobbs, Ching has shown.” Board of Trustees chair Annette Nistor and staff Annette says while some cost factors worked in the school’s favour member Ed Book inside the new gymnasium.

during the drawn-out process a change in Ministry of Education funding policy, causing the goalposts to wobble and shift away, were quite unhelpful meaning Larry had to use all his wisdom and expert steering qualities to keep the project on an even keel. “Completing this gym has however aged Larry by 20 years.” Tribute was also paid to deputy principal Graeme Smith who conceived the Bricks 4 Gym sponsorship scheme which raised more than $50,000 towards the $1.83m project.

William St resident Brian Martin has for several years been worried a serious accident would occur at the corner of his and Edward streets. He says he can relax a little more now since a Give Way sign has been erected opposite the busy entrance to Nelson’s largest primary school, Henley. Waimea Weekly reported Brian’s concerns in August, pointing out nearly every other similar intersection in town is controlled by Give Way, if not Stop signs. Tasman District Council communications advisor Chris Choat saiys council had this job on its ‘to do’ list, but was waiting for changes to the Henley School frontage to be finalized before installing new traffic signs and re-vamping the pedestrian crossing. A soon to be opened new pre-school facility, Jigsaw, and new carpark for the benefit of people visiting the under construction dental centre, both adjacent to the intersection, will make this the busiest spot for traffic and pedestrians in Richmond early in the New Year. “Whether it was expressing my concerns or not which expedited the new signs I’m not sure but I’m just very pleased kids in particular will be a bit safer around this intersection now,” says Brian.

Kempthorne wins Mo contest Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne has beaten his Nelson counterpart Aldo Miccio by a hair, actually by several dozen hairs. The two leaders decided to take up the Movember challenge to grow a mo to help raise awareness and money for men’s health. Aldo conceeded defeat just before the end of the month. “He has more volume, but I have more style,” joked Aldo. “Richard won fair and square though, he is a very hairy man.”

Movember New Zealand collaborates with two men’s health partners – the Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. “This is a really important issue” says Richard. “I don’t really enjoy wearing a moustache, but it’s for a really good cause.” The mayor’s say they are looking forward to tomorrow [Wednesday] morning then they will be able to shave their Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne holds a mirror for mo’s and return their clean cut Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio as he prepares to shave of his mo at the end of Movember yesterday. look.

Flower Ride to Pike Mine It is a sad time for not only the West Coast but all of New Zealand in the wake of the Pike Mine disaster. It’s amazing to learn how many people in our district have connections with the good people of the coast. Local couple Kev and Kath decided to express their sympathy

by personally delivering flowers to the gate of the mine on Saturday. They made the return trip by motorbike. We wanted to make a gesture money can’t buy; take the time to go down there to show we’re all thinking of these people during their time of loss,” says Kev.

Award winning WIS Kiwi Kids team are: (in behind) Lily Pearson, Thomas Asprey, Casey Ogilvie and Bronte Haigh, with Tori Granger and Henry Deacon in front.

leaders in enterprise and financial education. Students form teams and plan a project for a not-for-profit or charitable organisation that will benefit their local community. They enter their project in a national competition, where the top ten projects are awarded the funds to implement their project. WIS Kiwi Kids will use their $500 prize to publish welcome packs which include a ‘How to be a Kiwi Kid’ Guide, kiwiana pencil and rubber, which will be distributed to refugees in the Nelson area. The key goal of Refugee Services Aotearoa New Zealand is to support successful settlement of refugees into New Zealand with a welcoming and inclusive attitude. Their aim is to assist and equip refugees with the tools to thrive and flourish in their new society. The WIS Kiwi Kids project will go a long way to making this aim a reality. WIS Kiwi Kid team member Tori Granger says, “Doing this project has helped us realise how difficult it can be for people from a completely different culture to adapt to living in here.”

Murchison’s ‘Techno Granny’ inspires five generations By Paula Panckhurst Nana Molly Hocking was born in Granity, West Coast in May 1919. She married Pete Bradley in Westport, and they moved to New Creek, Lyell, where their first two children -Allan and Molly were born. The family moved to a Murchison dairy farm in 1942. For several years they did the milk delivery in the days of milk cans and billies. Molly assisted in all aspects of farming while also caring for two young children. Molly and Pete’s third child Kerry was a real ‘late lamb’ born 23 after the previous child. This put a twinkle in Pete’s eye and a big smile on his face and kept he and Molly both feeling young for many years. Molly took a leading role in caring for other family members and friends’ children when they were unwell, or mothers were in the maternity home, always fostering an extended family. Nana Molly’s house has always been the place to go for amazing pikelets, peanut cookies, hot scones, and a sympathetic ear. Sitting on her old couch telling her all our problems, news and stories, is still a common occurrence today. She has mentored us all with her

Molly aged 91, her daughter Molly Colleen (standing), granddaughter Paula, right, great granddaughter Ebony, left, and with her great, great grandson Patrick Cooke who is 6 months. quiet words of wisdom from her life experiences, and unconditional love. In true rural style, relations and neighbours have always received kind ges-

tures such as gifts of food including baking and casseroles, whenever she felt they could do with some support in one way or another. If she saw rain

coming, Molly would jump the fence to get the neighbours’ washing in if they weren’t home, and many other little acts of help, too many to mention. Molly has come from an era without electric power or plumbing, so it was regularly off to the river for buckets of water. She, like others of her generation survived the hard years of the depression, and has adapted to this age of modern technology. Never one to be left behind she has conquered txting on a cell phone after receiving her first txt from a family at the age of 87. This earned her the nickname “techno granny”. Family from all over the world keeps in touch with her in this manner all the time now. When her eldest son Allan was born in 1936 Nana Molly was one of five living generations in the family. Since then Molly has been part of 3 more sets of five generations. Now, at 91 years of age, Molly is a great, great grandmother. At this great age Nana Molly enjoys regularly seeing her family and friends which include three children, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandson plus twin great great grandchildren due soon.

Just a thought :

- which is the very centre of the Bible’s storyline - the best place to look? For Jesus’ followers 2000 years ago, Jesus’ death was hideous too: hopeless, unfair and agonising. God seemed silent and absent. They would Daryl Bay serves as the have asked: Teaching Pastor at Hope Where is God Community Church. when it hurts? Romans 5:8: “God showed His great love for us in this: while we were sinners Christ died for us.” In other words, here’s what Jesus’ followers found in the cross: (1) God’s love – shown in the death of His Son for us. (2) God’s presence - at that dark moment when God seemed most absent, God was actually most at work – opening up a way for people to have a relationship with God again. (3) God’s wisdom – though He is infinitely mysterious, He can be trusted. No-one laughs at God in a tragedy. But hurting people do need comfort, compassion and ultimately, hope. The churches in our great community would love to help you in any way during these dark days. Please know you are most welcome to pop in this Sunday, or make contact at any time.

Where is God when it hurts?

Our hearts are broken for the miners and their families. All of us were fixed to our TVs during those agonising days, thinking of the families and community down on the coast. We continue to pray for strength for those dear families and miners to grieve well as they process their great loss. Philip Yancey wrote a book called: “Where is God When It Hurts?” That ancient question is both fair to ask and difficult to answer in days like these. Trite answers just don’t help – answers like: “just look for the silver lining on the grey cloud” and “time will take your pain away”. So what can we say? In tragedy, hurting people don’t laugh about God. Regina Spektor, an award winning Soul and Jazz artist, has a haunting song on the radio that goes (worth a listen on youtube): “No one laughs at God in a hospital. No one laughs at God in a war. No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor. No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests. No one’s laughing at God when it’s gotten real late and their kid’s not back from that party yet.” Read over those words slowly. Spektor is simply observing that it is normal in tragedy to find a compass in our hearts that points us back to God. “God-talk” starts to come out. Government officials talk about “faith” and “miracles”. Graham Henry sends “prayers” from the All Blacks in Wales. Why? Because deepest sadness, anger, and pain spontaneously cause us to cry out for answers and for hope. In tragedy, God grieves with and for hurting people. In the Bible, John’s gospel has a story about Jesus’ friend who died. When Jesus got to the funeral, guess what he did? “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). The word means “quaked with grief”. The very next thing Jesus did was raise his friend back to life, but that did not stop him from wailing at the sting of death and the pain that his friends were going through. Just because God is bigger than us does not mean that he is aloof and unaffected by our pain. What comfort can you offer a grieving person? A compassionate, empathetic, sensitive heart. That’s what the God of the Bible offers you (Matthew 11:28-29). In tragedy, God invites hurting people to consider the cross of Jesus. Because worn clichés don’t cut it, the Bible ultimately points us to the cross of Jesus. Why is Jesus’ death and resurrection

those who did it do it yesterday.” Simon Mardon blitzed the field in the half marathon again. His 1 hour 13 minutes 24 seconds over the challenging course saw him out on his lonesome throughout the race with young Jordan Miller and Simon Leaning battling it out for second and third. Fleur Lattimore led the women’s charge, Carol Cooper and Eelyn Au following while Wendy Healey’s 2.13.19 new walk record will be hard to erase. Her dad, Roger Denton, very content to place second with Diane Grigg, third. The single lap 10km was the most popular distance with an outstanding 435 finishing. Steven Crossett, 38.14 and Britta Martin, 40.49 were the winners in the run. While Dean Cowley, 59.44 and Sally Donkin, 1.05.31 won the walking leg. All four now have their names targeted when November 26 rolls around in 12 months time. Nelson’s Prostate Cancer Foundation was another of the ‘big winners’ walking away with $4,250 as the chosen charity.

By Phillip Rollo The sun was shining over 900 competitors in the Run Mahana event on Saturday, but race director Greg Dykzeul says the heat was not a deterrent, and provided runners a picture perfect backdrop. Over 170 people completed the half marathon leg, with the Run Mahana being many athletes first ever endeavour. “That’s a pretty awesome experience for us knowing that we are their first event. Almost like their starting point,” Greg says. There was plenty of nervous faces at the starting line, but it all turned to smiles and relief at the finish. More runners also creates a better atmosphere with a certain buzz humming throughout the field. Greg says some runners may have been caught out by the heat, but the time of the year makes preparing for the temperature difficult, especially in the half marathon. “It’s a tough run psychologically, it’s a long way. And on a course like that where its rolling you do experience those hills. Plus you bring in the heat it adds another element to it. But full credit to

Kiwi heroes meet at sports awards One time Waimea College groundskeeper Val Smith won her second supreme title at the NZ Community Trust Sportsperson of the Year Awards at the Hope Community Church on Friday evening. The popular world champion and Commonwealth Games silver medal winning lawn bowler put some valuable training and advice into the Waimea College girls football team, coached by her sister Sandi Hamson, early this season. Multisport athlete Richard Ussher won the Golden Edge Sportsman of the Year award. A special feature of the evening was a pre-awards gathering of as many of the Nelsonians as could make it who had represented New Zealand at Olympic Games, introduced by 1976 Olympics gold medal winning hockey player Selwyn Maister. Two Olympic athletes who were particularly eager to meet each other were Dick Tayler (MC for the main function) and Harold Nelson who lives at Oakwoods in Richmond. Both men won the 10,000 metres running event at Commonwealth Games in New Zealand – Harold at Auckland in 1950 and Dick at Christchurch in 1974 on the opening day of competition, sending Kiwi sports fans into a frenzy and setting the tone for two of this nation’s greatest sporting events. Dick Tayler said he has only snippets of his famous race on video while there is no film of Harold’s glorious run as film

crews were told not to record the race as New Zealand runners were not expected to feature among the place-getters. Dick’s time in winning his Commonwealth Games gold medal of 27 minutes, 46.4 seconds is still a games record.

Harold, at 87 years of age, is the oldest living New Zealand Olympian. He is a former Waimea College teacher and had the honour of being New Zealand flag-bearer at the 1950 Commonwealth (Empire) Games.
