‘It’s the least we can do’

Mayors back drive to open accommodation for quake survivors

The Christchurch earthquake has devastated a city so closely linked with our own and now it’s time for Nelson and Tasman people to help, say the regions two mayors. Already dozens of businesses, groups, schools and regular Nelsonians have dug deep to support the cause with donations and fundraisers, and yesterday the regions came to a standstill as people observed a two minute silence at 12.51pm, the time of the earthquake one week ago. Nelson has sent teams of emergency workers to Christchurch to help find survivors and recover bodies. Nelson City Council has also opened its camping grounds to Cantabrians seeking refuge from the aftershocks and damage to the garden city. And today Waimea Weekly jumps on board to do its bit. Plenty of people are offering houses, baches and spare rooms on TradeMe and Facebook and a new initiative, Quake Break, aims to do it in an easy and effective way says Weekly publisher Steve Page. “Folk are hurting and we need to do what we can to help. This is a way that will give people a chance to relax and de-stress in our beautiful region before returning to rebuild their city. “On our website, www.waimeaweekly.co.nz, is a simple link to fill in for Nelson and Tasman people who have a house to lend, free of charge to people needing a rest from Christchurch.” Quake Break is being run in conjunction with Radio Network, a Christchurch Newspaper, Richmond Mall and Waimea Weekly. Richard and Aldo say they are proud to see the way the region has responded to the crisis and both councils will continue to help its southern neighbours in any way it can.

OPEN FOR CANTABS: Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, left, and Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio say they support Nelsonians opening their homes, baches and whatever else they have to offer, to earthquake-stricken Cantabrians over the coming months. Photo: Andrew Board.

After the Christchurch quake what do you think is the best thing people here in Nelson and Tasman can do to help?

“They need some moral. I have friends in Christchurch and they’re all so down. They’re walking around like zombies.”

“We need to donate heaps of things to them. Food and water would be best.”

“Everything that can be done is being done but we could offer people a break, somewhere to stay to get away from it all.”

“A lot has already been done but I’ve donated clothes and sent bedding. If I could offer a bed I would but I’ve heard of a lot of people doing that, which is brilliant.”

NEWS IN BRIEF CHRISTCHURCH RELIEF: Significant numbers of people from Christchurch have been arriving in the Nelson Tasman region over the weekend seeking a break from the earthquake aftermath. Nelson Tasman Civil Defence staff have been working over the weekend to gather information and provide assistance to those arriving, says Roger Ball of Nelson Tasman Emergency Management. The Emergency Operations Centre at Nelson City Council was activated on Saturday to support this work. SEVERE WEATHER: A severe weather alert has been issued by the MetService. There are large numbers of visitors from Christchurch who are staying in campgrounds who need to be aware of this the MetService say. Rain was expected to become heavy this morning and it is expected 80-100mm rain will fall, with peak intensities briefly near 25mm/hr.

Businesses doing their bit for Chch After seeing the destruction caused by last week’s earthquake in Christchurch, many local businesses have gone into collection mode. PBT in the Wakatu Industrial Estate last Thursday and Friday sent a total of six containers full of much needed goods to the devastated city. PBT worker Alex Bradley says the company sent four containers equalling 10 cubic metres on Thursday and two more crates on Friday. Also sent were two crates of watermelon. All this was donated by local businesses and members of the community. “We really appreciate how people QUAKE RELIEF: Richmond’s Alex Bradley and have got behind this. I’m amazed the rest of the Richmond PBT staff spent a few at how many people have come days last week collecting much needed goods for in with stuff,” says Alex. Christchurch. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Goods such as bottled water, canned food and sleeping bags have been sent to Christchurch. It hasn’t just been the local PBT business helping out the city; PBT locations throughout the country have been doing their bit by collecting goods and transporting it all to Christchurch. The ASB Aquatic Centre also got behind Christchurch by hosting a Wave Rave on Friday. The centre had nearly 150 children attending and across the other CLM facilities more than $6,000 just from attendance. This money has already gone to the appeal. The Richmond Lions Club also did their bit by hosting a sausage sizzle on Sunday. They raised in excess of $300 for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Christchurch, Tasman is with you Tasman people joined the rest of the country and honoured those lost in the Christchurch earthquake with two minutes silence in Sundial Square yesterday. Members of the community, together with many businesses, gathered in Sundial Square to remember the 6.3 magitude quake at 12.51pm. A family from Avondale were in the square after escaping a destroyed Christchurch last week. “We were flooded out so we’re up spending time with my sister-in-law for a break,” says Vicky Goldwater. The family are now staying in a motel in Nelson. A number of fundraising events in the region have quickly been established to help out Cantabrians in their time of need.

Hyundai’s new i20 has gained the maximum fivestar safety rating during the latest round of testing by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The i20, one of Hyundai’s newest small cars, was tested under the organisation’s tougher new rating system. The updated range of safety tests are now more stringent and require vehicles to be equipped with the most advanced safety technologies available. Raising the benchmark for the small car class, the i20 five-door model scored exceptionally well in all four categories assessed – adult occupancy, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist – resulting in the highest possible overall rating. Notably the i20 attained 88 per cent in the adult occupant protection tests, including the new whiplash assessment, outscoring the Honda Jazz in this respect, as well as in the other three categories. The car’s active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners and six airbags – front, side and curtain – played a key role in achieving success in the tests for frontal, side barrier and car-to-pole impacts. Another small car, the Suzuki Alto, only achieved a three star rating. Equipped with high levels of standard safety

Advertorial equipment, the i20 scored an impressive six out of a maximum seven points in the safety assist category, receiving top marks for its seatbelt reminder and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). “The i20’s five-star rating is recognition of Hyundai Motor Company’s commitment to providing our customers with world class cars and the highest level of safety.” said Philip Eustace, Executive Director Hyundai Motors New Zealand. “It follows the success of the multi-award winning i30, which also achieved the maximum score, demonstrating that Hyundai is developing cars which bring excellence, value and safety to consumers. Hyundai was the first car maker in New Zealand to include the life saving benefits of electronic stability control as standard across our entire range and we are now seeing other companies follow our lead.” The Hyundai i20 has an extensive list of active and passive safety equipment as standard, including six airbags, active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stability Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. The i20 is being assessed for sale in New Zealand with no confirmed launch date as yet.

Wedding fashion in the vineyard Interested in fashion? Getting married soon? Local businesses have banded together to provide an event for people who are involved in either. Wedding Fashion in the Vineyard is taking place at White Bridge Vineyard in Hope on March 28. The home of Kathryn and David Orange will welcome visitors to enjoy an evening of live entertainment in the marquee amongst the vines. Local musician Emily Jones will be entertaining guests together with a fashion show of wedding dresses and formal wear. Some of Nelson’s finest culinary experts will cater the evening and guests will have a chance to sample canapés from these chefs together with wine. This event will be a showcase of Nelson and Richmond businesses involved in weddings and formal events. One of the organisers, Marianne Hart Biggs, says the concept was designed to promote these businesses. “We wanted to help promote and showcase our businesses, along with other Nelson and Richmond businesses who specialise and devote their time to weddings over the summer season.” The idea behind the event is to give brides and anyone going to a formal event the chance to go and see the different fashions that are going to be on the catwalk, as well as the services that compliment a function. “We’d like to think the people who are interested in this event are not just interested in weddings but in fashion in general,” says Kathryn. The organisers say they are excited about put-

ting on this unique event. “We’re hoping that it will turn into an annual event, so this is our first one and it’s just going to be an awesome extravaganza,” says Marianne. Kathryn believes weddings are a community event, with several different businesses often involved in the one day, so the function will provide a place where these businesses can get together and promote themselves. The doors open at 7pm with the show starting at 7.30pm. A limited number of tickets are available from Tonic Hair and Beauty, White Ridge, Foxy Lady and Rock Box for $27 each, or two for $50. For more information visit weddingsinthevineyard.co.nz.

Girls loose their hair for a good cause and raise thousands Less time in the shower is making life easier for Jenna Ross and Aliesha Shutte. The Waimea College students last week chose to go bald for charity. Together the 17 year-olds raised $2440,

nearly $500 more than their goal amount. “And there’s still a bit more coming in,” says Aliesha. Having no hair is making things easier in the mornings for the teenagers, who

say they have already had a few “funny looks”. A large group of students gathered around the girls at lunch time on Friday to witness the shave done by teacher Trent Dallimore. “Everyone was really supportive and clapping,” says Aliesha. Aliesha says she’s not sure if she would ever shave her hair again though. “I’d do it again

if someone close to me had cancer, but I wouldn’t do it just to raise money, it’s a lot of work.” Having stray hands reach out to touch their bald heads is becoming common around school. “I’m just really happy. We made $500 on the day by people giving and the school has been really supportive,” says Aliesha. The hair lost will now go towards making wigs for those that need them.

Business update Cartridge World goes really mobile

BOAT SHOW: Boats like the Mudlark with boaties such as Euan Macdonald, left, and David Fairlie, will be at the Antique and Classic Boat Show at Lake Rotoiti on March 5 and 6. The event is held in the Nelson Lakes National Park and is now in its 13th year.

Classic clinkers come to Lake Rotoiti From elegant steamboats to clunky clinkers – the labours of love of the vintage boating world will be displayed at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park on March 5 and 6. The New Zealand Antique and Classic Boatshow, now in its 13th year, continues to grow in the number and quality of craft presented, as well as the number of people attending to view the boats and the action. Organiser Pete Rainey says there’s a buzz in the boating community. “Owners just can’t resist the opportunity to show off their boats, whether it’s the walnut veneer on the dash or the finely polished alloy on a restored motor, the opportunity to compare and contrast and to swap stories with other likeminded boaties is just irresistible – then there’s the pleasure of watching blokes trying and sometimes failing to start their motors for the Seagull dinghy race.” The format on both days is the same – on shore

displays in the morning and races on the lake in the afternoon. Judging will take place on Saturday, ahead of an evening awards dinner at the Alpine Lodge. Pete says judging for the Jens Hansen Trophy is not all about looks. “History comes into it and the way it’s constructed and engineered.” “It’s not necessarily the most valuable or expensive boat that wins, but the one that stands out for the judges as being special, or memorable.” There are other awards including prizes for best new restoration, best steamboat, best jet-propelled craft and best themed display. Races will be held for yachts, row boats, seagull motored dinghies, poppers, canoes, child rowers and swimmers. Boating heritage devotees will want to make time on Sunday morning for a meeting on the feasibility of a permanent home for classic boating at St Arnaud. “Although early days, the concept of a classic boat museum with associated community facilities has a lot of merit,” says Pete. All boats will be checked for noxious aquatic weeds, and oil leaks before entering the water.

Sailing experience for school students A handful of Wakefield School students will be experiencing life on the high seas this Friday. A dozen students have been selected to experience the Steadfast, a replica of a famous 1913 gaff-rigged pilot cutter. The students will have a range of duties to do while on board. These range from helping to steer the boat, helping haul in the sails, to taking soundings (measuring the depth), identifying seabirds and other wildlife and taking samples. Prior to the trip the students have been learning how to use a compass and what to do if they happen to fall overboard. “We’ve already learnt about knots and how

fast the ship can move,” says one student. The students will also be dressing up in 1900s period costume for the day. Sailors, gentleman naturalists or even Elizabeth Swan may be present. The students say they are all looking forward to the trip and most haven’t had an experience like this before. Everyone says they are very interested in learning how to sail and may even continue to learn after the trip. The closest most have come to this sort of ship is a sail boat. Some of the kids say they get seasick but they’ve already learnt about what type of foods to avoid to try and stop this from happening. A few of the girls have their fingers NELSON BAYS HARMONY crossed to spot a few dolphins on the CONCERT FOR CHRISTCHURCH day. The students will be leaving from Nelson Harbour and they’re unsure of Featuring where exactly they are headed – it all Barbershop depends on the wind.

Creating artwork gives students a taste of business Year 10 Waimea College students got to experience what it was like to be involved in business last year. The students, who are now Year 11, were involved in the school’s Education for Enterprise programme which gave them real life business opportunities. “It was really relevant to their learning,” said art teacher Patsy Fletcher.

Art students worked with the Richmond Baptist Church to design and create artwork for their foyer. The church approached the school to be involved in the programme and they then became the students “client”. The project was run over two terms and all the students had different jobs to do to get the artwork completed.

Ever wondered what a wallaby’s fur feels like? Want the chance to find out? Above: Rosie with Mana.

Meet the Wallaby Competition! ART FOR BUSINESS: Waimea College students, from left, Bridie-Rose Downing, Mere Shadlock and Tahlia Brooks with the work the art class students created. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Rosie the Wallaby belongs to vet Mana Stratton (of Wild Vets fame). She was given to Mana as an orphan when she was still just a baby. She has been pioneering Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy for a particularly nasty bacterial infection in the bone of her lower jaw. Rosie has completed a large number of treatments and is so relaxed about the whole procedure that she often gets into the chamber unassisted before the operator is ready! She has become a mascot of the clinic and everyone loves it when she is hopping about the prep room peering into things. She gave a fright to a few passers by when she hopped up onto the waiting room bench and watch the traffic through the venetian blinds!!! If you would like the chance to meet Rosie, we are running a drawing competition for the under 12s to come to the clinic and get up close and personal with this nosy marsupial!

Simon and Jodie Bixley are the proud owners of Signature Homes Nelson. The couple have been operating in Richmond for just over a year, having bought the Signature franchise after a very successful stint managing another major building franchise in the area. Jodie and Simon have now lived in the Nelson area for the past four years, and they are really enjoying raising there family here. The couple are raising their three children in the area, Gus, 3, Will, 7, and Jade, 9. “We love the people here, and we can’t think of anywhere else we would rather live”, says Jodie. See Our NEW Home Collection visit www.signaturehomes.co.nz 308 Queen Street, Richmond Phone 03 541 0317 Signature Homes offer an extensive and exclusive guarantee programme. we took parts of a standard plan and came up with a design that captured all our personal needs. “During Construction we were communicated with extremely well with numerous calls weekly. Dylan (project manager) was very well organised, due to this and the willingness of all the Signature contractors to go the extra mile we were able to move into our house approximately 4 weeks earlier than we first anticipated. “We have been through a number of Signatures competitor’s homes and we can openly say that our home has the best finish of them all; the painters have taken great care and done a fantastic job along with all others involved in our home. “We are over the moon with our new home and have no hesitation in recommending Simon and the team to anyone who wishes to build. Everything we asked for we got and everything Signature said they would do, they did. Thank you very much.” The aim of Signature Homes is to provide a top quality job for their clients. “We love keeping them happy and being able to build lovely homes for them,” says Simon. The process of building a home can often be perceived as tricky. However, at Signature Homes they aim to make it as stress-free as possible. “We want to find out what their needs are and really concentrate on what they’re looking for,” says Simon. Signature Homes also provide New Zealand’s most extensive guarantee programme, which is exclusive to Signature Homes. It is very thorough in protecting clients from things such as budget blowouts. “We make sure we don’t go over their budget – when our clients say to us ‘we’ve got this amount to spend’, that’s what we stick to. “Sometimes this can be tricky, because there are unknowns out there with earthworks and

engineers and things like that, so we have to do a very thorough investigation initially to get all that right and keep to that budget,” says Simon. Giving their client what they want is the number one priority for Simon, Jodie and the rest of the Signature Homes team. “We tend to look at their lifestyle, how they live, and things like whether they are big entertainers or not,” says Simon. Where a client has special requirements, it can mean that the best course of action is to go down the design and build road to create something unique. However, Simon says that the company has recently launched new range of pre-priced and highly cost-effective standard plans, which can also be adapted to suit their client’s preferences. “These have all been specifically engineered and designed to make sure that the home is very economical to build, but they still get the protection, guarantees and reputation that Signature Homes offer - there is no difference in build quality in our cost effective homes, than in our design and build homes,” says Simon. Signature Homes believe they are a very client-driven business. “We really focus on what they want; it’s not about us, it’s about the client, and it’s

about the folks that are carrying out the work. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have a very good business because you to have reliable and reputable people at the coalface,” says Simon. Jodie and Simon believe the perception of Signature Homes has changed since they purchased the franchise a year ago. “When we first purchased the franchise the perception of a Signature Home was the upper middle and upper end of the scale, but the fact is they are very affordable homes that first home buyers and those on a modest budget can also afford. It’s not unaffordable to build your own home through Signature Homes,” says Simon. First time buyers can be re-assured that with Signature Homes, you will be looked after. “It can be quite daunting; it’s a lot of money that people

are handing over, but we want to make sure they understand what is happening and be a part of it, because it is really exciting, and it should be an experience they remember for all the right reasons”, says Simon. Signature Homes also have a very unique system to follow through with the construction of a home. “Right from the very first time we meet with a client; all communications are entered into our online database. There are literally hundreds of steps that we have to follow to ensure that every single box is ticked and that due care is taken. This makes sure the project flows smoothly, from the moment you walk in to our showroom or show home, right up until maintenance procedures are performed years after we hand over the home to you. The system streamlines all of the design, pricing, ordering and construction processes.” Handing over the keys of a completed home is very satisfying for the couple. “It’s quite a special feeling,” says Jodie. “Handing over the Bradley’s home was fantastic and the comments they were making were great. Adrian was saying that he’d been through a number of our competitors’ homes recently and none of them were finished to the same standard as this one which was very pleasing to hear. We thank all of our people for that, the people that have actually done the work because it gives us faith in what we’re doing,” says Simon.

If you have some skills that can be put to use, they’d love to hear from you. Contact Club Captain Frazer Lochead on 542 4444 or 027 439 2035 to register your interest or find out more details. JAB rugby continues to be incredibly well represented at Wanderers Rugby Club with an incredible 233 registered players in 2010. Teams in the junior rugby grade (JAB) cater for under 6s up to under 11s and the intermediate grade covers under 12s and under 13s. These grades will also commence competition games on May 7.

Registrations for JAB Rugby will take place at Wanderers Rugby Club on Friday 11 March from 5 – 7.30pm and on Saturday 12 from 4 – 5pm. Discounted subs will be available at both registrations and eftpos will be available. Late registrations will be welcome, but they will cost slightly more. If you come down to register on Friday 11, be prepared for a good time as there will games of Rippa Rugby and Beach Cricket taking place, followed by a barbecue and the bar will be open. Head along, register the kids and chill out. Because Nelson will now be hosting a Crusaders home game on the same night as registrations had been planned, the club have brought the start time forward to 5pm and have slotted in the extra Saturday registration period so that no budding Crusaders will miss out on seeing their team in action! For any enquiries regarding JAB Rugby please call Ant Strange on Ph 542 4449. The JAB team of coaches and managers are parents and caregivers of players who have volunteered to help their children enjoy and learn the game. Without these volunteers teams could not be put together or take the field. This is a rewarding and entertaining thing to do with your children. No experience is necessary as full support is given by the junior coaching coordinator, existing coaches and committee members. Wanderers is looking for coaches and managers in many grades this year so if you can help please talk to one of the committee members present at registration night. Taylors Contracting Ltd have again come on board as major sponsor of the Wanderers Sports Club in 2011. The club are grateful for their ongoing support together with other club sponsors. Fitness Zone: 40 Week Lifestyle Challenge

BELGIUM BOUND: Appleby’s Tom Delany, 18, is off to Belgium in three weeks to compete in the amateur cycling scene. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Teenager biker bound for Belgium Tom Delany is addicted to adrenalin. The rush he gets from cycle racing is what drives the 18 year-old to compete at the highest level he can. Tom says cycling is his passion and he wants to go as far as he possibly can. So when the opportunity to compete in Belgium came knocking, the Appleby resident jumped at the chance. Tom leaves in three weeks and says he is starting off in the amateur scene in Ghent, a city in Belgium. The ex Nayland College student has been involved in competitive cycling in New Zealand for the past five years and is training hard ahead of his next big step. “At the moment I’m putting in mega time on the bike before I head over there.” Being overseas for seven months, the duration of New Zealand’s cycling off-season, will give Tom the opportunity to train for coming events here. “I’ll be back home to race the tour of Southland.” Tom says the best part about cycling is the adrenalin you get in a race. “The feeling you get is like nothing else.” Cycling is certainly a competitive sport for those like Tom who are serious about it. “It’s all about trying to cross that line first and

Get into this!

beating everyone else.” Tom says he doesn’t have a preference between team or individual sports, but says cycling is certainly a team sport. “I’m racing in a team over there so we’re all helping each other out trying to win the kermese, which is a type of race over there.” The trip to Belgium came about after Tom got in touch with Nathan Dahlberg, a former Tour de France rider. “He knows the guys over there and he’s basically coordinated it. I’m racing for a team that’s called Don Fredo, an under 23 team. “I’m going there to start as an amateur and then try and work my way up to be professional, that’s what I really want to do.” Eventually Tom wants to compete in the most well-known cycle tour, the Tour de France. “That’s my big goal.” Last year the teenager was selected to represent New Zealand in Australia. He was racing in Canberra and placed eighth overall and first equal in the KOM [King of Mountain] classification. Tom also placed eighth overall at the Tour de Vineyards. Tom says he will be working on strength and endurance in Belgium. “I’m going to be doing lots and lots of hard races, hopefully up to about three times a week of racing so it’s going to be real good.” Belgium is the centre of cycle racing according to Tom. “That’s where it’s at. They have major big races there and it’s where everyone goes so I’m really looking forward to that.” Tom says he appreciates the help and support offered by Avanti Plus and the Tasman Wheelers. Richmond Athletic season set to be a stunner Phillip Rollo An incredible off-season recruitment drive has proved a more-than-successful business for Richmond Athletic. Another handful of key additions have arrived at the club following the blockbuster signing of former professional Ben Wright, who has scored against Chelsea. The first division squad has been further boosted by the signings of New Zealand Secondary Schools center-back Matt Shaw, former Crystal Palace academy player Johnny Gbenda Charles, who has also represented Hong Kong in rugby sevens, former Nelson Suburbs squad member Brent McNabb and holding midfielder Daryl Fenemor who represented Richmond in the Mainland Premier League. All four players add depth all around the park and importantly increase the tally of local players at the club. With so much attacking talent at his disposal, head-coach Steve Bignall has hinted that there will be a formation change to cater for the number of prolific forwards. Ben and fellow English import Sam Mason-Smith, along with last season's leading goalscorer Wesley Olea, look set to start in a formidable front three with Wes playing off the two target-men. While the Germanborn Ben is the star name in the squad, Steve is tipping a big year for the younger of the imports.

“I think Sammy will be very useful. He's just so fit. He'll still be running the 90th minute the same he was in the first. Sammy will have a big impact. Ben will be a big threat in the air,” he says. Sam joins good friend Jordan Yong at the club and is a former finalist for the Nike Football Search competition which aired on television in the United Kingdom and has played conference level football. Matt arrives at the club on the back of a strong Mainland campaign with rival club Nelson Suburbs. The former Nelson College star will be departing for Norwich in July where he hopes to progress through the levels of the English football pyramid but will be a handy signing for the first half of the season. Matt represented New Zealand on the Secondary Schools team's tour of the UK last year. “Matt is ideal for what we want. He's young and ambitious and needs to be playing with good players.” Joe Green will again captain the side. But with training picking up the pace in recent weeks, the Richmond players are raring to get on to the football pitch as soon as they can.

NEW ADDITIONS: Richmond Athletic have had an incredible off-season recruitment. Included in the squad are, from left; Ben Wright, Jose Sabugal, Sam Mason-Smith, Jordan Yong, Joe Green, Matt Shaw and Jorge Donoso. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Resource Management Act 1991 Tasman Resource Management Plan Proposed Change 22 – Mapua and Ruby Bay Development

Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw: Speed Limit Suspension and Reservation of Kerr Bay Lake Rotoiti, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March 2011

Council has prepared amendments to Parts I and II of the Tasman Resource Management Plan, known as Proposed Change 22, which allows for future expansion of Mapua and Ruby Bay away from low-lying land and the inundation and erosion prone coastline between Mapua and Ruby Bay, on to more elevated land northwest of the township. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of the proposed Change. Submissions can be sent to the Manager Policy, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by Council for a period closing at 4.00 pm on Monday, 11 April 2011. Forms for making submissions are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Changes After submissions have closed, Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to Council. Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Availability of Proposed Changes The proposed amendments are available to view at Council’s Richmond office and the Mapua community library or to access online at www.tasman.govt.nz under ‘Changes and Variations’ via ‘Policy’, ‘Resource Management Plan’. Submission forms are also available. For more information or advice on these amendments, please contact Rose Biss, Ph. 03 543 8421 or rose.biss@tasman.govt.nz Update Pages to the Plan Update No. 38 to the Plan, including all amendments to the text as a result of the proposed Change, will be available as soon as possible. For enquiries concerning the update or availability of the Plan, please contact Pam Meadows, Ph. 03 543 8581, email pam.meadows@tasman.govt.nz or one of the Customer Services staff.

The NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show will be held at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on both 5 March and 6 March 2011. Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster by the TDC Navigation Safety Bylaw 2005 (Amended 2006), the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part and controlling the event, and exclusive use of a reserved area is provided to the event organisers. The area reserved exclusively for this event will include all of Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti out to a line which heads due east from a point 200 metres south of the Brunner Peninsula. The reserved area will therefore include the water ski access lane and those areas of water immediately adjacent to the launching ramps and beach at Kerr Bay. For the dates and times detailed above, the organisers of the NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow shall have exclusive use of the area defined above and will be required to ensure that craft or persons not involved in the event do not enter the reserved area unless the permission of the event organisers has been obtained. Vessels wishing to transit through or enter the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with the event organisers, and then may do so when, and under such conditions that the event organisers may choose to specify. Event communications may be using UHF radio, or Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. Vessels entering or within the reserved area are requested to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials relating to passage through that reserved area as if it was a direction given by the Harbourmaster. Persons wishing to swim from the lake shore or waterski are recommended to use West Bay. Waterskiiers should deep-water start anywhere more than 200m from shore outside of the reserved area, unless towed at less than 5 knots to or from the 200m line. Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed by contacting the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster at the Richmond office during office hours.

Pursuant to Section 55 of the Resource Management Act 1991 and Clause 29 of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010, all references to ‘Restricted Coastal Activities’ are removed from the Tasman Resource Management Plan effective as at 26 February 2011.
