Lake Rotoiti’s tranquil Kerr Bay erupted with the roar of powerboats on Sunday as the lakes annual regatta came to a close after two days of high speed competition. The Rotoiti Powerboat Club hosted the event which saw a variety of powerboats racing for various championships, from junior and clubman to the Formula 1 boats and Grand Prix Hydroplanes. Lee Merrion of Richmond was amongst those competing over the weekend, this being his first year behind the wheel of his own powerboat, Road Runner. After only a

Angry Brightwater residents are ready to take the law into their own hands after thieves hit 11 cars around the town at the weekend in the latest wave of burglaries reported around Brightwater, Wakefield and Richmond. Police are investigating the thefts that occurred around the streets of Brightwater after 2am on Sunday. Although police arrested one male youth early on Sunday after responding to 111 calls with a police dog squad, posts on a Brightwater community Facebook page suggest that another three offenders escaped. “They caught one but I think there are four in total - three guys and one girl - all teenagers,” one Brightwater resident posted on Facebook. Sergeant Craig Barker of the Nelson Police Tactical Crime Unit declined to comment on the number of possible offenders saying only that police are continuing their investigations into the thefts to determine “if

“It’s a great idea, I’m at Wakefield and I think out at Wakefield it’s pretty well policed. Anything that can save these kids being hurt.”

“I saw that, it’s a great idea, most important to make people slow down.”

He says thieves stole wallets, cash, a garage door opener and miscellaneous items from their two cars and boat. “The dogs started barking and I initially thought it was nothing so I just lay there for a few minutes,” James says. “Then the dogs started getting really aggressive so I realised somebody must be really close to the house so I got up and got a head torch and big stick and looked out the window. “I saw my vehicle three-quarters of the way down the drive and the interior lights on in my wife’s car so I phoned the police and shot outside and let the dogs off. The dogs raced down the hill but they’d already gone - next time I’ll get up straight away. “I’m not too concerned about the things that were stolen - they can be replaced. They catch these kids and they go before the courts and then they get back out there and re-offend.” Another Brightwater resident Mike de Gray says they had a small sum of cash stolen from their car while their neighbour had a wallet stolen. Mike says he found discarded wallets, cards and keys “thrown all over the place” when he went for a walk around Brightwater on Sunday. “They didn’t have the brains to try and access the cards - they are probably just dumb kids,” Mike says. Jasmin Price says in her post that the thieves stole wallets from their Ford Ranger while

Daniel Granger says the thieves “actually went into our garage though the side door” and stole two wallets and an iPod from their car. The reaction from a number of Brightwater residents suggested taking the law into their own hands with one person posting “I’m sick of this bullsh*t - if the police don’t do anything who’s keen to rally at their parents houses?” Another says “I’d love to come face to face with these pricks” with a third asking “who’s got their names” and asking them to post it on Facebook. However, Mike says the police are doing a good job and if people wanted to help they should just keep their eyes open and take photos of any suspicious behaviour. “You can’t do vigilante stuff - you’ll just get into trouble. Leave it to the police,” he says. Craig says the thieves have been targeting unlocked cars and residents could prevent most of the break-ins by securing their vehicles. He also says residents who had their garage door openers stolen needed to recode the openers.

Malcolm Jamieson, Brightwater. “I think it’s needed and I think it’s a good idea because people go too fast. It reminds them what the speed limit is and there should be more of them.”

Sweetened drinks pulled from hospital Juice, flavoured water and smoothie drinks have all been banned by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. This move follows its removal of sugar-sweetened beverages from all its premises – including Nelson Hospital – two years ago. From May 1, these drinks will no longer be available from hospital cafes, shops and vending machines, nor will they be served to patients. Instead, patients and visitors will be offered a range of water, coconut water, plain milk, plain milk alternatives, teas and coffee. NMDHB Chief Executive Chris Fleming says sweetened drinks have a negative impact on oral health and has a role in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Nelson’s most successful national sporting team has been given a lift by the region’s top newspaper group. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants has teamed up with Page Media Ltd, which publishes Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz. The newspaper group has signed on as the print media partner for the Giants’ 2016 season. Giants captain Sam Dempster says the NBL basketball season is shaping up to be a big one for the three-time champions, with a team stacked with local players and a move back to their home court at the Trafalgar Centre. “We’ve got a good local core and two imports who have fitted in really well with the group, and with Jarrod Kenny coming back from Perth as well it is an exciting team to lead.” The Giants spent the weekend at a pre-season Blitz tournament in Porirua, before starting the season with a four-game away trip, starting on March 11. Sam says the entire team is looking forward to getting back inside the Trafalgar Centre for its home games. “Playing at Saxton’s was nice but it’s not

Locals buy replacement for stolen car Brittany Spencer

A group of Nelson businesses has replaced a car belonging to a pair of English tourists after it was stolen and dumped in the Waimea River. CCTV footage shows Leanne Majehrzak and Ryan Roberts’ car being stolen from outside their Nelson city hostel around 4.50am. The car, which contained the majority of their possessions, was taken on a “joyride” before being dumped it into the Waimea River. Leanne says her partner Ryan went to drive the car to work, but came back into their hostel saying it was gone. “I was like ‘what do you mean the car is gone?’ And he said, ‘it’s gone, it’s not there,’ and that’s when we realised it had been stolen. “We were devastated, all our winter belongings and quite a lot of other stuff was in there.” Nothing was stolen, but due to a petrol leak most of their belongings had to be thrown away. Leanne and Ryan had just decided to use buses for the rest of their trip when the phone rang, and BMTT’s Terry Thompson was on the other end. After hearing about the couple’s

Basically he said, ‘nah, it’s too damaged, there’s no coming back, but me and the guys have been talking and we want to buy you a new car. We don't want you to leave New Zealand with a bad impression,’ I couldn’t believe it,” says Leanne. Terry raised funds from local businesses and three days later

the couple had themselves a Toyota Estima. Terry says he just had to help Leanne and Ryan. “I felt really sorry for the poor buggers because everything they had was in the back and somebody just stole the car, put a brick on the accelerator, put it in gear and drove it into the river. I didn’t want them to think Nelson was a bad place so we brought them another wagon on Saturday.”

Terry’s gift couldn’t have fallen into more grateful hands, Leanne and Ryan say they are “so incredibly thankful”. “They’ve all been so helpful, they’ve pretty much done everything for us, Terry and his wife Debbie are just unbelievable. I went to see them today and I took all the guys in the workshop a huge box of beers, a card, and some flowers and wine, and they were so happy. It’s the least we can do.”

Big Play Out, Wednesday, February 17: Hundreds of families turned up to the Tahunanui Sportsfield on Saturday, February 20, for the Big Play Out. The annual event focused on extending learning through play and getting the families out having fun. Organiser Moira Siobhan says the event was a huge success with 12 out of 14 of the region’s play centres offering interactive games, learning, music and prizes. Moira would like to thank the event’s many sponsors and everyone who showed up. Volunteers wanted for ‘bioblitz’, Tuesday, February 16: The weekend’s ‘bioblitz’ at the Brook Sanctuary was a huge success with over 60 people joining in. Rick Field, project coordinator and educator at the sanctuary, says they had an absolutely fantastic time and over the 24 hour period 261 observations were made including plants, birds, fish, insects, fungi and even a bat was detected. A highlight was the number of families involved and the use of the iNaturalist app to collate and tally all the observations. Electric fishing was also able to yield a healthy number of long fin eel and Koaro from the Brook stream to be added to the observations. For the full results see www.brooksanctuary. Faulty fridge fire destroys speedway building

SPEEDWAY FIRE: Nelson Speedway president Wayne Martin in front of the burned out corporate boxes at the Lansdowne Rd track. The fire started early on Saturday morning but it didn’t stop that night’s racing. The fire was started by a fault in a fridge in one of the corporate boxes. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Brittany Spencer An electrical fault in a fridge sparked a fire that destroyed the corporate boxes at Nelson Speedway early Saturday morning, but it didn’t stop the club hosting its race meeting later that day. Fire crews were called shortly after midnight on Saturday morning, but by the time they arrived the two storey building was ablaze. First on the scene was Richmond Fire Brigade deputy chief and Speedway volunteer Craig Piner. “There are four corporate boxes upstairs and all but one is completely gutted. Aside from a little bit of smoke damage, the southern room is completely intact. We managed to cut it off before it spread any further or caused too much damage downstairs,” he says. “I’m an official at the track so it’s really devastating that they’ve lost the building, especially because we’ve got a few meetings left this season like the big Super Stocks meet – the building would have been absolutely packed.” Five fire engines from Richmond, Stoke, Appleby and Brightwater were joined by the Nelson command unit and were able to gain control of the blaze in under half an hour, completely extinguishing the flames within the hour. Nelson Speedway president Wayne Martin says that, while the circumstances are less than ideal, it won’t affect the rest of the season. He says Saturday night’s racing went ahead as planned. “By the time we got there she was pretty well underway, it’s definitely a downer, but at the end of the day what is done is done and we’ve just got to move on.” Wayne says it’ll take about a month to work out where they’re heading as far as replacement goes. He says an upgrade is a possibility. “We haven’t made any decisions as yet, but we’ve got a committee meeting on Wednesday. Obviously this is a big decision and we can’t make it without the club members.” He says the club has had an incredible show of support from the community since the fire was made public. “The phone calls I’ve been getting have blown me away, how many people have got in contact and are keen to help out is amazing, and it’s all appreciated.” A fire investigator was on the scene later that morning and has ruled that the cause was an electrical fault from a fridge in one of the corporate boxes.

WEDNESDAY 2 March 2016

New support group for parents Richmond Plunket is introducing a new support group aimed at parents, grandparents and caregivers who are looking after young children. Plunket Cafe started last month and is being held from 9am to 11am every Friday at the Plunket rooms at 56 Oxford St. The group’s Community Karitane Debbie Harvie says Plunket Cafe will provide advice on nutrition and feeding, child behaviour, sleep and settling and toilet training, all in a relaxed cafe-style environment. “Parents, grandparents and caregivers can come in and have a coffee and sit down and have chat,” Debbie says. “It’s not replacing our Well Child Plunket nurse checks - we just wanted to make it a bit more flexible for parents who want to see us and get that extra bit of support if needed.” Debbie says the Plunket Cafe is free and a Plunket nurse can be available for “health related questions” if required. Debbie says Plunket was still holding its regular playgroup on Monday from 9.30am to 11.30am during the school term and the popular Multiple Birth Support Group every Tuesday from 10.30am to 12pm. Richmond fire chief retires Simon Bloomberg Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s chief fire officer Ralph Lonsdale is retiring after a lifetime of fighting fires. Ralph, 65, hangs up his chief fire officer’s helmet this week and then leaves his job at Nelmac later this month before moving to Southbridge in Canterbury to be closer to his family. And that marks the end of 33 years as a volunteer in Richmond and 48 years of fire fighting after first learning the trade as a young forestry worker in Golden Downs Forest in 1968. “I joined the New Zealand Forest Service at Golden Downs when I was 16 and we spent the whole first day on fire training,” Ralph recalls. “I’d always been interested in fighting fires so that was a good start. “When I finished my two years of forestry training, I did a four month stint on the fire crew with the New Zealand Forest Service. We did some fairly big burns to clear land and that’s where I learned a lot about vegetation fires - lighting them and controlling them and seeing how they burned.” Ralph continued his involvement in fire fighting, joining the volunteer brigade at Kaingaroa Forest near Rotorua

when he was transferred there in 1976. He later returned to Nelson to work for the Waimea County Council as the forestry officer on Rabbit Island, joining the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1985 and becoming chief fire officer in 1996. But Ralph jokes that his career in fire fighting started earlier

than that. “I remember when I was five I had a red pedal car and a fireman’s helmet with fire chief written on it. So I’ve always been interested in fire fighting even as a kid.” Ralph has been involved in some “big fires” during the last 33 years, including forest fires at Harakeke in 1979 when

a burn-off got out of control and raged through 150 hectares, and Hira and Redwood Valley in 1981. The Richmond brigade was also called into Nelson to help battle big fires at The Warehouse in 1992 and Majestic Theatre in 1996. Ralph says the role of fire fighters has changed dramatically during his time, with volunteer fire brigades now required to attend motor vehicle accidents and medical emergencies. The equipment has also changed with the introduction of high-tech, fire proof material and bigger and better appliances. “I remember when I first started, we had a crowbar, hacksaw and big can opener for getting people out of cars. Nelson had a Land Rover with

some kit aboard and that went all over the region - that’s all we had for car accidents. “Our fire fighting kit’s changed a lot too. In the early days we had woollen bunker coats and black PVC leggings and plastic Super-Chieftain hats that buckled around the brim if it got too hot. “Then they brought in a thicker PVC legging that we used to call clown pants because they had braces and bib up the front. Now we have stateof-the-art pants worth $2000 a shot but they are very good.” Although Ralph has enjoyed being a fire fighter, he says there are some aspects of the job that he won’t miss, especially dealing with the increasing number of fatalities. “We used to get one a year at the most, now we get quite a lot more with being called out to motor vehicle accidents and medicals. Last year, we had four purple medical calls and none of them made it which is not very nice for anyone,” he says. “At least now we have a peer support group to help us deal with that. If you have a nasty one they say ‘do you want to have a chat’ and they’ll help people out and explain some the things you may be experiencing and that your reaction is normal talking about it really helps,” he says. “In the early days there was no counselling. We’d come back to the station and have a few beers and go home so it’s a big improvement.” Ralph says he will miss working with the volunteers at Richmond who “are a brilliant and dedicated crew.” “It’s a hell of a commitment but they keep turning out. A chief is only as good as their crew and I have been lucky to a very good crew - I’ve had a good time here.” Ralph will be replaced by current deputy chief, Craig Piner.

Group gets nappy donation from mayor

A new community support group for mothers and young families that opened in Richmond on Monday has received some welcome support from one of the town’s well-known fathers. Ma’s Place has been set up by a group of “passionate people” to provide a safe place for mothers and their young children where they can be supported and connected to community agencies. One of the group’s members, Carol Marshall says they have received plenty of support including a donation of some resuseable nappies from Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne who will be attending the opening. “Starting a new family can be a challenging time and the friendly support of those at Ma’s Place will be invaluable,” Richard says. “We are very aware, being parents ourselves, how stressful raising young families can be so it’s a great thing these people are doing.” A trained midwife and mother of three, Carol says they want to provide a place which could fill the gaps if someone was feeling isolated, facing an unplanned pregnancy, or just needing more support with raising a family. We will provide a very practical and down-toearth service, with essential things like meals for new parents, baby gear to share, and even a cloth nappy library. Ma’s Place has been set up with help from the Richmond Family Support Trust. It is based at 13 Cautley St in Richmond and can be contacted by phoning Carol on 0800 MAS PLACE or go to masplace.co.nz

Damage to Brook fence: Thanks to the Nelson Weekly for breaking the story about the significant rain damage to the Brook fence. A number of ratepayers wrote of the almost certain consequences before the fence was built - how the hillsides would be undermined and that there’d be inevitable damage to the Dun Mountain Trail. It was all pooh-poohed then, with assurances that “every care would be taken.” Nelson Council has accorded such instant credibility to amateurs and is now attempting to stay well back from all the problems it has enabled to occur, and is now doing the same with the poison drop. If council were a private company, the staff and councillors would be sacked. Dan McGuire. When I read in the Nelson Weekly (23 Feb 2016) that last week’s rain caused damage to 65 metres of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary fence, a thought came to mind that Nelson is a great tourist destination but it has become a lesser enjoyable place to be a ratepayer. It is high-risk business decisions such as allowing the construction of a pestproof fence within a water-catchment area on unstable public land and its business partners calling it pest-proof to ‘Save our babies,’ that irks me as a Nelson resident. Do farmers build fences siding along near-vertical slopes? No, and why not?

Further, the emotive call to ‘Save our babies’ and the existing ecosystem will probably not survive the 24 tonne aerial drop of ‘rat-poison’. Helen Black.

That's great. We should all get behind this, as we really do have an ant problem in Nelson / Richmond. Mike Roberts.

Brook sanctuary have applied to drop more than 20 tonnes of Brodificoum poison bait. If 1080 was dumped, I’m sure the outcry would be huge. But Brodificoum is a worse poison than 1080. It has a contamination period of up to three years and will kill many of the species they are supposed to save. On many other projects the killing of non-target species horrified researchers and, because of this, and environment contamination, Brodificoum use was phased out in the 1990s. Why is it being used now? Dropping such poison close to, and upstream of our City is extremely foolish and demands explanation. Their phrase to get funds for fence posts stating “Save our babies” now seems badly misplaced. Bryce Buckland.

I'm in! I just moved up to Nelson from Christchurch and I've been bitten several times and it has only been about four weeks! We have a nest in the kids trampoline now, I saw them move right in! So Young Lee.

Community effort to stop ants: We tried this as our house is infested, but it didn't work. They're bloody horrible, will swarm anything and they bite. If they've got the concentrations right, I'll be willing to give it another go. Rachel Thompson.

True for that. Parking is driving around and around, looking. Go into big car park and out again to go round and round. Finally a park, then no seats inside. People knocking into each other. Bloody hopeless! Maxine Foster.

We've tried everything. If you think this is going to work, I'm in. Bonnie Slade.

Theatre proposed to go inside Trafalgar centre A 1000-1200 seat theatre for musical concerts has been proposed to be built inside the Trafalgar Centre, to help attract more acts to the city. The plan is a part of the draft annual plan that is expected to be adopted by the council on Thursday and open for submissions from March 11. Mayor Rachel Reese says $400,000, along with some money in the long term budget for temporary seating and lighting, is proposed to be spent on facilities to allow the centre to be converted into a theatre for concerts and shows. But she insists it should not be seen as competition to the Theatre Royal, or a substitute for a performing arts centre. “It’s not a substitute for a tiered seating auditorium. That’s a different project altogether. It’s a different market from the Theatre Royal and hopefully we’ll draw more events to Nelson.” Rachel says the Trafalgar Centre has been a ‘major challenge’ for the council but she says it is important to make

In terms of the functionality of that building, we’ve looked at it a bit more, there has been some demand from event organisers for a 1000-1200 seat space, can we create that, and we think we can and the marginal cost for doing it we think is worthwhile.” She says she still supports the idea of a separate performing arts centre for the region.

“The long term plan does have money in there looking at a performing arts centre and looking at the viability of that,” she says. “I’m still interested in that and I know it’s one of the subjects where people say ‘we can’t afford it,’ but actually we always need to be looking at that and where we are going in the future. Principal: speed cuts don’t go far enough

Simon Bloomberg

Speed limits are going to be reduced on a number of Tasman roads but the principals of some of the district’s rural schools still want variable 40kmh school speed zones implemented to keep their students safe on the roads. Last week, the Tasman District Council announced some key changes to speed limits following a review of the speed limit by-law for this year. The changes will come into effect on April 1 and include speed reductions that affect a number of rural schools, including Ranzau and Mahana, which have been identified as a high traffic risk. The speed limit outside Ranzau School will be reduced from 70kmh to 60kmh while the 60kmh speed limit on School Rd outside Mahana School will be extended along the entire length of the road. A recommendation to reduce the speed limit on Ellis St which runs outside Brightwater School from 50kmh to 40kmh was rejected by council. “Any reduction in speed is good from our school’s perspective but we are still fairly proactive about getting a 40kmh variable speed zone,” Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson says. A council survey has identified Ranzau as having the most serious traffic safety concerns of any school

in the Tasman district and Dave says the only way to resolve those issues is to install flashing 40kmh variable speed zone signs. “We have been Ranzau prinworking with cipal Dave council on this Sampson. and hope that common sense prevails,” he says. Chairman of council’s engineering services committee, Trevor Norriss agrees many of Tasman’s rural schools have valid concerns about speed limits outside their gates. He says council is investigating the issue and will be looking at the possibility of installing either static or flashing 40kmh variable speed signs outside the “10 highest priority schools”. Trevor says council staff are analysing traffic speeds past the schools, numbers of children biking or walking to school and crash history before making recommendations to council at the next engineering services committee meeting this month. Brand new boat to mix with classics at this year’s boat show Kate Russell

One local man will be bringing his 50 years of boat-making experience to Lake Rotoiti this weekend for the 17th New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show. Basil Hart, who was a boat builder before he retired, has been attending the show since 2002, and this year will be bringing his newly-built ‘clinker’ dinghy for the first time. Taking four weeks for him to build, the yet to be named boat is made from a variety of different wood, with the keel being recycled from an old kauri mantelpiece. Basil is expecting there to be around 10 similar boats in his class and regards the show as a “great event” with lots of people attending from outside of Nelson. “It’s a great spot with the big foreshore and the planes flying above,” he says. At 801m above sea level, it is the highest altitude boat show in New Zealand, and organiser Pete Rainey says they will be sticking with the usual format of boat displays on the land in the morning and races on the lake in the afternoon. “From early morning on both days of the weekend, you can wander around the boats on land, chat with the owners, view displays with stories of restoration and rebuild, and then watch the races on the lake in the afternoon,” he says. “We have a lot of fun, from the slightly

looks, craftsmanship and the boat’s history. Other awards include prizes for best new restoration, best steamboat, best jetpropelled craft and best themed display. Races will be held for yachts, rowboats, seagull-motored dinghies, poppers, canoes, child rowers and swimmers. Getting a bargain is almost always a top priority for shoppers but before you pull up outside your local big box retailer, take some time to check out the great range of quality products your local business owners have to offer first. In the rush of modern day life, people don’t

often think about where they can go to shop with local retailers, let alone why they should support them, as opposed to shopping on-line or from a national chain store. Shopping locally is important for many reasons including the number of local jobs it can create and the product knowledge and quality service local businesses can supply their customers. Another reason to choose local business owners is because they put in an incredible amount of time, money and effort to create their enterprise. One of the most important reasons to support a local business, though, is to recognise and support their contribution to our local community. When money is spent locally and passes through many local hands, more

people are able to benefit from it, which is why it’s small, local businesses that drive a community, not the huge corporations. It’s not always important how much money the community has, but how much of it can remain in circulation locally before it finally leaks out. It can be very hard nowadays to keep money in the local area when we are constantly being bombarded by hundreds of corporate advertisements telling us that cheapness is important above all else, leading us to overlook the values that independent businesses provide us, both as shoppers and in our community. When people shop locally, they keep money flowing around their community and it creates opportunities for local businesses to give back to those who sup-

When it comes to buying, selling or renting property, there is one team that’s proven time after time they have what it takes to provide a constant standard of excellence. Christine Cook, Brent Sturm and Grant Chaney lead by example, and with years of experience in the industry behind them, and a passion for client satisfaction, they have molded the Richmond office into a staff of property experts. They are also excited to be expanding their business, after the opening of a brand-new Ray White company in Nelson, just three

weeks prior to Christmas. Christine says they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to grow the company further, and with business partner and licensed salesperson Grant Chaney they now have a strong presence within the entire Nelson Tasman region. Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. Proverbs 13:20 I have been truly blessed with great friends. This last weekend, due to a special occasion, I got to catch up with my three best mates. These three blokes are all very different in temperament, yet each one shares qualities of trustworthiness, authenticity and humility. All three of these guys are real Kiwi blokes. All three love their families and are good dads and husbands. All three have sacrificed their time, energy and resources to help me when I needed it because I’m their mates and that’s what mates do. All three are devoted followers of Jesus. They are true faithful friends and I am truly grateful for

them. Friendships are vitally important aren’t they? The Bible makes the point that our friends influence our livessignificantly! God tells us in his word that “bad company corrupts good character” (1 Cor 15:33) and my observations over the last 45 years concur. The Bible also reminds us that good friends make a positive difference in our lives. We see this in the book of Daniel. The story begins when four young Hebrew men were stripped away from their land and taken as captives to Babylon. These men (Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) were taken from their families and brought to serve the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. Now it’s important to understand that the way Babylon worked back at this time was to indoctrinate their captives,

so these young men faced huge pressure to conform to Babylonian customs and ways (which would have practically meant disregarding their faith and their Jewish distinctions). What is amazing though, is that these young men stood firm in their convictions, even though they were put under great pressure to yield. As you look at this account you see their friendships were key to their success. I want to conclude by asking you, do you have good friends? Really? And are you being a good friend? Really? Remember good friends will encourage you to be a better person, better parent, better spouse, and a better employee or employer. Good friends will goad you to do what’s right and not what’s easy. Don’t forget, ‘you can’t fly with the eagles when you keep walking with the turkeys’.

Rebekah has teamed up with Cat Glass from TV3’s The Block NZ, who is also an early childhood teacher, to run the competition, which will see one lucky centre win $120 of vouchers of their choice, from either Mitre 10 or Briscoes, to “refresh” their staff room. they prepare for the Friendship Games. Nigel says Josh and Caleb deserved their selection after being the outstanding pitcher-catcher combination at the under-nationals. “It’s not often that the third-placed team gets a pitcher and catcher in the tournament team,” Nigel says. “But they were by far and away the best combination.” The selection of Josh and Caleb in the Emerging Sox caps a great season for Nelson softball which has its premier men’s club finals next weekend.

A softballing combination that formed at primary school has taken another step towards top honours after Josh Kelly and Caleb Delany were selected for the New Zealand Emerging Sox team. The two year 12 Waimea College students first started playing softball together, with Josh pitching and Caleb catching, as 10 year olds at Brightwater School. Josh and Caleb have made significant progress over the last six seasons and this month were named in the Emerging Sox to play in the Friendship Games in Sydney in June and July. Josh and Caleb had already been selected for national age group teams before playing their way into the Emerging Sox team after a series of top performances for Upper South Island at the national under-17 tournament in Christchurch. USI defeated softball giants Hutt Valley, Waikato, North Harbour and Auckland on their way to third-place with Josh and Caleb making the tournament team and Josh being named top pitcher.

Murchison paddler Rob Hervey showed his class, winning the men’s open Astral Boater Cross race at the Buller Fest white water kayaking and rafting festival based at Murchison at the weekend. Rob won the opening event of the three-day festival held on Friday advancing through the heats of four kayakers before prevailing in the final on the Matakitaki River. Murchison’s Jess Matheson finished second in the open women’s final to Toni George of Rotorua. Jess was also second in the NZ Kayak School kayak slalom held on O’Sullivan’s Rapid on the Buller River on Saturday. NZ Kayak School operator and legendary paddler Mick Hopkinson finished second in the veteran’s men’s category while Marahau’s Phil Palzer showed great balance and skill to win the Fergs Elite Stand Up Paddleboard race, also held on O’Sullivan’s Rapid. “It was quite a feat to get down the rapid standing up - only three of the paddleboarders got through,”

one of the organisers Aimee Macdonald says. “There was quite a bit of water in the Buller so it made things interesting - it made a couple of the gates in the kayak slalom very challenging.” Aimee says about 250 paddlers from all over the country competed at the festival that also included a rafter cross race and a fun Cardboard Cup event. “We had a good number of entries including 24 juniors all the way from Alexandra and a good turnout of spectators. We had good weather and good flows so it was a good weekend all round.” One of the highlights of the weekend was getting former Murchison rafting guide Jezza Williams, who is a tetraplegic, into a raft for the Rafter Cross. Jezza became a tetraplegic after suffering a spinal injury in an accident in Switzerland. Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology won the inter-polytechnic competition based on points gained by competitors and volunteers.

Tasman Resource Management Plan Proposed Plan Change 60 Rural Land Use And Subdivision Policy Review

Tasman District Council’s Draft Schedule of Charges 2016/2017 Statement of Proposal

Water restrictions

The Council has prepared amendments to the Tasman Resource Management Plan, known as Proposed Plan Change 60: Rural Land Use and Subdivision Policy Review. This Plan Change reviews and updates the policy and rules for rural land use and subdivision. The proposed amendments ensure greater protection of productive capacity, allow for flexibility of use and maintain rural character – while offering greater choices for landowners. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of any of the proposed Change. Submissions can be sent to the Environmental Policy Manager, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by the Council until 4.00 pm on Monday 14 March 2016. Submission forms are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Amendments After submissions have closed, the Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support of or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to the Council. The Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Availability of Proposed Amendments The proposed amendments are available to view at the Council’s Richmond office; Motueka, Takaka and Murchison service centres; Richmond, Motueka and Takaka libraries; or online at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/trmp-proposed-changes. Submission forms are also available. For more information or advice on these amendments, please contact Mary Honey, Ph. 03 543 8397 or Email: mary.honey@tasman.govt.nz. Update Pages to the Plan Update No. 53 to the Plan, consisting of amendments to the text and maps, will be available as soon as possible. For enquiries concerning the update or availability of the Plan, please contact Pam Meadows, Ph. 03 543 8581 or Email: pam.meadows@tasman.govt.nz or one of the Customer Services staff.

You are invited to make submissions on our draft Schedule of Charges for the coming year. We recover some of the costs associated with the services we provide through these fees and charges. Some charges are set by statute, and others by the Council. All the charges are reviewed each year, and changes made if necessary. The reason we charge for some services is to make sure the costs of providing the service are recovered from those who benefit from it, rather than from the general ratepayer. The draft Schedule of Charges covers the year from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017. The full Statement of Proposal is available for viewing on Council’s website at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and during normal office hours at the following Tasman District Council Offices and libraries: • Richmond Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Office, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka • Takaka Office, 14 Junction Street, Takaka • Murchison Office, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison • District Library Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Library, Pah Street, Motueka • Takaka Memorial Library, Junction Street, Takaka Submissions are invited on the draft Schedule of Charges, and must be received by 4.00pm on Thursday 31 March 2016. Submissions may be made online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or delivered to your local Tasman District Council office.
