Support for dairy owners They came from every corner for support, advice and camaraderie. Twenty-seven dairy and store owners from Nelson, Stoke, Hope, Wakefield, Appleby and Lower Moutere banded together on Friday morning to address the spate of robberies in the region during the last four months. And, it didn’t matter if they had been hit or not - they just wanted reassurance that their store wasn’t going to be the next one to be targeted – some for the third or fourth time. However, one local shop owner who attended the meeting but wished not to be named so as to not attract copy-cats, says that strong messaging needs to go out to the perpetrators. “The cops are doing their job – they’re catching them – you can’t fault them. We need to get the message out that if you do the crime you will get caught,” he says. “They keep getting nothing, except for a criminal offence and screwing up their future.” Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne says that youths often aren’t aware of the consequences and are only “thinking about the now.” Hope Store and Takeaway owner Chai Ly, is increasing his security

Making good memories one flight at a time Judene Edgar A ray of sunshine was offered by the Motueka Aero Club to young CanTeen members on Sunday, in the form of a breathtaking scenic flight over the Abel Tasman, helping them to forget their troubles for a while. The club has been rocked by cancer recently with both members and their partners affected, so club captain and pilot Kevin Foster decided to ‘turn lemons

into lemonade’ and “bring a bit of joy into the lives of people affected by cancer.” For Gabe Marshall from Richmond, it was an opportunity to see “one of the best places on the planet”, but also to give back to CanTeen and support other members. Gabe has been a member of CanTeen since 2009, after losing his mother to breast cancer at age 13, and watching his brother fight leukaemia, who is thankfully in remission.

“Things were very raw when I joined CanTeen, but it helped my road to recovery and to provide me and my brothers peace of mind,” he says. “Everyone’s story is unique but we all share a can-do and positive attitude in what can be a horrific time.” The flight was timed to coincide with the club’s monthly ‘club day’ to make it a real family day, and to give members, especially those affected by cancer themselves, something positive to fo-

cus on for a while. Club president Jason Deer says, “it was Kevin’s initiative, and he’s run with it, but I’m hoping we can make it an annual event.” “As a parent with two teenage children watching their mother go through cancer for the past three years, I know what these young people are going through.” To find out more about CanTeen go to canteen.org.nz or contact Brooke on 021 562 245.

Support for dairy owners FROM PAGE 1 measures further after two attempted burglaries in the past two weeks. In the most recent attempted burglary at his store on July 22, three youths under the age of 17, in a Toyota van stolen from Trafalgar St, Nelson, were unsuccessful in their attempt to steal cigarettes due to the security measures he has in place. The youths went on to take alcohol from the Ocean Lodge Bottle Store before gaining entry to the Milton Street Dairy at around 2am, targeting cigarettes, however they were again unsuccessful, again due to security measures. The van was later abandoned and set alight on Clover Rd, Brightwater. However, he was delighted that, thanks to the help of customers, the police were able to arrest all of

the alleged offenders. “Locals need to look out for each other more - our neighbours and customers have been really good and have helped the police,” says Chai. “The police have been really good, but it would be good to see more local police around to keep an eye on us.” Richard, who has met with the police to discuss how council can work with the community to create a safer environment, agrees. “This is a whole of community response.” “We need to support each other as a community.” Tim Crawford from Nelson Police said at the meeting that they would be “front footing” the issue by being more visible with their patrols and helping owners improve their environmental design. “Our role is to facilitate and work

Hope Store and Takeaway owner Chai Ly with his security door. Photo: Judene Edgar. with these businesses.” Senior Sergeant Blair Hall of Nelson Police said he was happy with the turnout and the meeting was a good way to connect with dairy owners and hear their perspective. The meeting, facilitated by coun-

cil, Neighbourhood Support, Victim Support and Nelson Police, focused on ideas that could help protect their stores such as more security for cigarette cabinets, more signage, CCTV cameras, improved lighting, being more “aware” of their surround-

ginning

ings, sharing information, and helping owners feel more comfortable to speak to police. “I’ve spoken to a few of the owners and they are feeling like they are not alone – we’ll go away from this, meet with council and look at the ideas,” says Blair.

Local fisherman Dan Fisher, pictured, caught this bluefin tuna just off Greymouth on Saturday, taking one and a half hours to bring the 140kg fish in on a 24kg line. “We had quite a few rods out with basically marlin lures on them, and the fish hit the lightest gear we had at 24kg, so we reckon it’s a pretty good effort to bring it in,” Dan says. Dan is a member of local fishing club Dawnbreakers and owns a 14m, 500 hp boat called Relentless which he used to chase this fish. “We had a great window of opportunity with the weather so we took off. It was a two-day trip and we were in 500m of water about 65 nautical miles out. It’s quite dangerous - not for the faint-hearted that’s for sure,” he says. “Also, at that far out, you see some great wildlife too. We saw six whales and literally thousands of dolphins.” Dan is waiting for another break in the weather before heading off again to chase an even bigger tuna.

Adrian and Jane Chandler with a photo of Roger Hepburn and his replica medals. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

It’s going to be an emotional week for a Brightwater couple who are commemorating the death of a relative who died of wounds on August 3, 1917 after he was injured in Belgium during WWI. Roger Paul Hepburn received the Military Cross in June 1917 for exemplary gallantry while serving as a signaller in the Royal Engineers in WWI. The 24-year-old Second Lieutenant later died of wounds suffered while bravely repairing a damaged telegraph wire during heavy fighting in Ypres. Roger’s grandniece Jane Chandler and her husband Adrian this week published a memorial notice in the Waimea Weekly to mark the 100th anniversary of his death. Jane says it will be an emotional week for Roger’s six grandnieces and nephews who are living in New Zealand, because they are all very familiar with Roger’s exploits. “When I was a child, I knew that two of my granny’s brothers (Thomas and Edward Read) died in WWI, but I did not know anything about Roger” Jane says “It was many years later that I found out that my grandfather Maurice Hepburn, who had emigrated to Nelson in 1939, had also lost a brother

Waimea students back from India Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz A group of Waimea College students learned a lot in one month, witnessing extreme poverty and experiencing oppressive heat and genuine hardship on their World Challenge journey through India. World Challenge is a global organisation that runs school expeditions around the world aimed at helping the students experience different cultures and develop life skills. Waimea’s latest World Challenge expedition travelled through New Delhi, Manali, Pushkar and Agra and into the mountains at the 4270m high Hampta Pass before returning to Nelson last Thursday. Teacher Paul Crofskey says the students coped well with

the difficult conditions and he’s delighted with the way they responded to the challenges. Paul was especially pleased with the way the students “stepped up and got the job done” during their community service, which involved painting a primary school near Manali. “It’s a confronting country – it’s not like a trip to the Gold Coast,” Paul says. “It’s called the World Challenge for a reason and these kids had plenty of challenges with the heat, the food and the poverty. “But they all did really well. It’s my third

World Challenge and I’ve never seen a group of students work as hard as these ones – they were brilliant.” Paul says the students returned to Nelson with a different perspective on life after witnessing poverty on the streets of New Delhi and meeting a woman in a café who had been scarred by an acid attack. In contrast, they also saw some amazing sights including the Taj Mahal and the spectacular Amber Fort. Student Brooke Willoughby says another highlight was visiting an elephant sanc-

tuary in Agra where rescue elephants were rehabilitated after being held captive and tormented as tourist attractions. “They were all rescue elephants and you could see all the spike marks in their skin,” Brooke says. “We got to to wash and feed the elephants. which was cool.” Brooke says New Delhi was “pretty scary” with lots of ghettos and “people with missing limbs from gangsters cutting them off for money”. “Seeing things like that makes you feel lucky to be living in Nelson,” she says.

Nemo a best friend for Blake Charles Anderson

When five-year-old Blake Costello is dropped by taxi back home every afternoon after school, Nemo will be waiting for him. At first, Nemo will act as a loyal guard dog and bark over his concern for Blake arriving in a strange car. But then that concern will melt into something different. He will run out the door of their home and excitedly jump up all over Blake. In most households, this would be expected - a dog and his boy. But this relationship is different to most. Blake has severe, non-verbal autism and Nemo is an assistance dog - specially trained for Blake’s needs. “I learned a long time ago that there is no such thing as normal,” says Blake’s mum Anna. The family received Nemo last December from Assistance Dogs New Zealand Trust (ADNZT) which is dedicated to matching dogs with people with different needs. The dogs can be trained and bred to help people with everything from Down syndrome to cerebral palsy. In Blake’s case, the hope was that Nemo would allow Blake to be able to walk around town and to school,

without running away. “And he is a runner,” says Anna. Their home is surrounded by tall fences and hard to reach latches. Before Nemo, the idea of even walking into Richmond would not be entertained. But now Blake can be attached to his dog via a special harness. Blake knows that Nemo is there to help him. But also, Anna says their relationship has become more than that. “There is a friendship growing. It’s slow, but it’s there.” Nemo used to walk Blake down the road to Henley School but as Blake became stronger that walk has become more temperamental. For now, they use a taxi. Next week is ADNZT’s annual appeal to help raise the $48,000 needed for each dog’s training. It trains 15 labrador puppies or retrievers each year, but there 74 families with young children on the waiting list for dogs. Anna feels lucky that they could get Nemo after 18 months as the waitlist is now about four years long. She was never a “dog person” but says Nemo has slotted into the family perfectly. Visit https://assistancedogstrust. org.nz/ for more information.

UEEN STREET

What you need to know The completion of Stage 1 from Gladstone Road to Noel Leeming this week (weather dependent) means there are changes coming to vehicle access to and from Queen Street. Vehicle access to Queen Street from Gladstone Road and McIndoe Place is set to reopen, with a new roundabout in place at the McIndoe Place intersection.

Key things to remember: •

The footpath remains open with access to all shops.

Stage 2 from Noel Leeming to Cambridge Street is well underway and going well, and Downer will soon move into Stage 3 works as well to keep the momentum up – that’s the area from Cambridge Street up to ASB Bank.

Once Stage 1 opens, the street will be open from Gladstone Road up to the temporary Noel Leeming entranceway. McIndoe Place will also reopen.

This means vehicles will not be able to access the area from a temporary Noel Leeming carpark entrance to just past Sundial Square. The footpaths are open however and all your favourite shops and cafes are operating as usual. There were several unknown services waiting for contractor Downer under the street surface in Stage 1, which delayed progress and meant this area was closed to traffic for longer than planned. We’re very grateful to the businesses in Stage 1 and the general public for your patience – thank you for bearing with us through a difficult introduction to the project and we do apologise for the disruption.

There is now a roundabout at the intersection of Queen Street and McIndoe Place.

The road will then be closed to vehicles from the temporary Noel Leeming carpark entrance to past Sundial Square. There will be no vehicle access to or from Cambridge Street and Croucher Street.

Map legend: road closed to vehicles

Nelson City Brass Band stars shine at worlds Simon Bloomberg The Nelson City Brass Band’s stellar year continued when six of its members helped the National Band of New Zealand finish second at the World Music Contest in the Netherlands. The Nelson band made a winning start to the year defending its C Grade title at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships in Wellington in May. Late last month, six of the band’s members enjoyed success on the international stage as part of the national band which finished second in the Championship Grade at the world champs in Kerkrade. Nelson City Brass band secretary Wayne Jennens says it’s

a “fantastic” achievement to have six Nelson musicians in the 37-member national band. “The band is made up of the very best players in the country. They are the All Blacks of the brass band movement in New Zealand,” Wayne says. The Nelson contingent included musical director Nigel Weeks, soprano cornet Kay MacKenzie, principal horn Mike Ford and cornet players Steve and Alice Rudhall and John McGough. Wayne says the Nelson band is “immensely proud of them all” and “exceptionally proud” of the achievements of their musical director. “Nigel is the one responsible for making the band play and

sound as good as it did, and it showed he is the equal of some of the top musical directors in the world,” Wayne says. Mike says the band performed four concerts while rehearsing in New Zealand before performing one in Hong Kong on the way to the Netherlands and three in the Netherlands leading up to the worlds. Mike also predicts the success of the band will continue. “Initially, the band was doing well partly because Nelson is a lovely place to live and it has attracted so many talented musicians. But now the Nelson band is doing very well under Nigel’s direction, I think it will keep going from strength to strength.”

Modified car gives new lease on life Judene Edgar A modified 1997 Toyota Caldina station wagon is about to provide a new lease on life for Southland tetraplegic Nicko Mannix, thanks to a number of businesses in Richmond and Motueka who have restored the vehicle to its former glory. Responding to the death of a paraplegic man, Richmond Community Constable Kyle Abbott was asked by the family to dispose of his modified vehicle as the family had no use for it. However, Kyle saw an opportunity to change someone’s life, and the family agreed to donate the car to someone who would benefit from it. “The car could have been scrapped so I’m so thankful to his family for letting it be passed on to someone else,” says Kyle. Kyle contacted Naomi Winslade at Workbridge and together with Brett Ladbrook from the NZ Spinal Trust, who works out of the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch, they suggested that Nicko would be a worthwhile recipient for the vehicle. Nicko, a carpenter by trade, was

living in Australia when he was run over by a car, twice, on New Year’s Eve December 2014, leaving him a tetraplegic with limited movement from the chest down and with reduced hand function. As a New Zealander living in Australia he was not eligible for healthcare, but as the accident happened in Australia he was similarly not eligible for ACC. Nicko says that he was “over the moon” when he received the call from Brett. “The independence it will bring me is unreal.” Despite spending nine and a half months re-learning every movement and still living in near-constant pain and having a lot of uncontrolled leg spasms, 27-year-old Nicko says he will not let his injury get him down. “Life isn’t easy and never will be, but you just have to keep going.” Nicko credits the loyalty and support of his friends who he says have never doubted him. But the simple task of giving the car to Nicko took a little longer than anticipated, as the vehicle required some work to be done. However, the task was made immeasurably easier thanks to Richmond and Motueka businesses, including

Richmond Community Constable Kyle Abbott, right, helps Espresso Richmond owner Tony Doake give the modified car a wax and polish. Photo: Judene Edgar. Espresso Carwash at the Richmond Mall who made the car shine with a supreme groom. Espresso Carwash owner Tony Doake says “it’s good to be able to do something for someone who needs it. We just want to make it

nice for the new owner.” After being groomed, Sollys is transporting the car to Christchurch next week, when it will be officially handed over to Nicko. “They deserve a big shout out,” says Kyle. “They’re bloody good

people and none of them hesitated to say yes.” Brett agrees: “I’m always blown away by the generosity of individuals and companies who go above and beyond to help people in need.”

Opinion:

The green elephant Steve Page Publisher I am not a political animal, like most of you I just get on with it. And when election time rolls around I look for the party or candidate that I think will be the best choice for Nelson and New Zealand. I don’t put much credibility in the warm-up promises and I’ll flip sides if I believe there’s a better choice. The only thing that changes for me is that in the few months prior I do tend to take more notice of what the candidates say and do. Traditionally, I vote National and Greens. The Nats because it’s obvious that, overall, they are doing reasonable job running the country – it can’t be easy. And then I will always throw a vote the Green way, what can we lose? The Greens, if nothing else, will keep the others honest. But now it’s all changed for me and I suspect a lot more people as well. Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, the latest self-admitted revelation from Metiria Turei, Green Party co-leader, that she has in the distant past lied to Work and Income about her living arrangements and subsequently got more money than she was entitled too. This allegedly went on for five long years, about 15 years ago, so it wasn’t an “oversight”. Whilst, in my opinion, this was bad enough, she recently implied it wasn’t her fault but she was a victim of the sick system. Strike number one. To deflect the blame somewhere else for a deliberate and long

running deceit is classless. Then to say to the media that she knows of others who are doing it now, and stating she would not say who they were, smacks of normalising a potential fraud and criminal action. Almost like it’s everyone else’s fault but the individual? Strike number 2. Then to have admitted to all this, would you not think she would automatically front up with the $15,000 plus the interest (another $15,000) and give it back all voluntarily? No, she is soon to start “talks” with Work and Income. Strike number 3. I hope they throw the book at her. Trust me, they would have had it been you or me. Coincidently, on the same day, a case in Greymouth where a chap threatened to rob the local branch after what his lawyer said was utter frustration at the service, got sentenced to 150 hours community service. I also experienced tough times in my life and had to survive in that Work and Income/Child Support regime. It’s not nice, nor even fair. Try being a Dad and working in it. Those buggers were ruthless. Still, I never stole any money from them by deceit. This is a very simple case of ups and downs. The money you received, using deceit, belonged to the taxpayer, Ms Turei. So pay up, take your punishment like the rest of us would have to, and then step down. In the meantime, I’ll find another party to vote for.

If you build it, they will come Judene Edgar Former Wakefield GP Dr Ted Bassett has created a legacy that continues to support the district’s healthcare, with Wakefield and Districts Health Trust’s latest initiative providing accessible defibrillators for the rural communities. Like so many country doctors, Ted worked from home, as did fellow GP Dr John Davis, but upon their retirement the sustainability of medical services in Wakefield village came into question, leading to the establishment of the Wakefield and Districts Community Health Centre society, which raised funds to build a

cardiologist Dr Tammy Pegg, one person dies every three days from a heart attack, before being able to reach the hospital, in the Nelson Marlborough region. She says that many of those deaths may have been prevented if they had access to an AED (automated external defibrillator), an easy-to-use device that is used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. Trustee and Kohatu farmer Evan Baigent says it’s all about preservation of life. “When you’re so far from anywhere, being able to access a defibrillator within those few critical minutes is so impor-

tant.” According to St Johns, use of a defibrillator within three to five minutes of collapse can increase the chance of survival by up to 40 per cent. “It can be a long wait for an ambulance, especially if you live in rural areas,” Bob says, “but we know that having a defibrillator can make the difference.” As well as 37 years as Wakefield’s GP, Ted also found time to establish the Abbeyfield movement in New Zealand, spearheaded construction of the Rotoiti Chapel and Noel Oxenham Rest Units in

St Arnaud, chaired the Wakefield Community Association for 13 years, and was a member of the Nelson Hospital Board for 15 years, amongst others. And the saying, ‘if you build it, they will come’, has certainly worked out for the Trust. The Wakefield Health Centre is humming with six doctors, five nurses, weekly clinics in Tapawera, and a range of other health services including physiotherapy, district nurses and Plunket. The location of AEDs in the region can be found at aedlocations.co.nz or on the Nelson app.

A challenging project that required a combination of specialist technology and ‘old school’ methods won the Hirepool Supreme Award at the Nelson Marlborough Civil Contractors Federation Awards held at Annesbrook Church on Friday night. The award went to Nelmac for the Suter Art Gallery Landscaping project that was a key element in the $12million redevelopment of the Nelson’s historic art gallery. Nelmac designed and installed a new boardwalk through native bush outside the gallery that connects the gallery to the neighbouring Queens Gardens. Nelmac’s Belinda Reburn and Richard Smethurst say working in a unique environment like the Queens Gardens presented many challenges. “There was nothing simple about this project,” Belinda says. “We had to work amongst the heritage trees so there were a lot of resource consent conditions around the project. “The guys were hand-digging around the tree roots to put the board walk in and we were very restricted with what we could do working within the tight confines

In some areas, arborists used “hydro-vac equipment” to wash out and vacuum up soil around tree roots so that boardwalk foundations could be installed. The big budget Hynds Projects Award, valued over $1.5million, went to Donaldson Civil Ltd for the Nelson City Council Hampden Street Little Go Stream Upgrade. Donaldson Civil director Gary Donaldson says one of the biggest challenges was managing peak traffic

flows while laying the stormwater pipes in the middle of Waimea Rd. “We looked at the site midmorning when we were tendering for the contract, so we underestimated the volumes of traffic when everyone’s driving to school and work. We had a 2.5m wide trench in the middle of a 7m wide road, so keeping the guys safe and having two lanes of traffic going was a challenge.” The other awards were: ASB Bank Health and Safety Award: Bryant Earthworks Ltd for their Wither Hills Farm Park Remediation Pyramids Vineyard and Reservoir project; Humes Young Achiever Award: Danyon Hutt of Nelmac; GRUNDFOS Projects valued at up

to $50,000: Concrete and Metals Ltd for the Kaiteriteri Beach Sand Relocation; Crowe Horwath Projects valued from $50,000 to $200,000: Downer NZ Ltd for the Nelson City Council Structural Bridge Repairs; Cable Price Projects valued from $200,000 to $750,000: Taylors Contracting Company Ltd for the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre Coastal Protection project; Land Dimensions $750,000 to $1.5million: Donaldson Civil Ltd for the Calder Stewart Port Nelson Warehouse; Judge’s Innovation Award: Fulton Hogan Ltd for the Trenching Shield and Lifting Beam for improved safety work for the Brook St pipeline.

Water: an issue for us all

Richmond couple Mel Yeomans and Jeff Welsh with their 1994 EF Ford Falcon, modified to look like a US sheriff ’s car. Mel and Jeff were among those at the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club’s celebration of Henry Ford’s birthday, held at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Jeff says they thought creating a replica sheriff ’s car was a novel idea so they decided to go the whole hog including lights, siren and a built-in control panel with a mock computer. Jeff and Mel even looked the part, sourcing the necessary bits and pieces to create matching sheriff ’s uniforms. They also own a 1976 Gran Torino, turned into a replica of that used in Starsky and Hutch. Sundays event was the 20th year that the club had celebrated Henry Ford’s birthday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

The sad news that a group of faceless people have circulated a leaflet to local residents urging a stop to the proposed Waimea Community Dam is a sign that Trump-style politics have arrived in our community. The lack of a fully informed and fact-based public discussion on water issues for the whole region is something we should all be concerned about. Water issues are not new, best illustrated by the fact that the current dam proposal is the result of 16 years work by a diverse group of stakeholders. That early and persistent work identified water shortages and Waimea River health to be major problems. The difficulties experienced in consenting water storage projects in other parts of the country are already resolved here. The issue now is how much will the dam cost and who will pay. The fears that have been aroused by deliberate misinformation regarding the current proposal need to be put into rational context. There is no doubt that for Nelson Tasman communities, doing nothing is not an option. Parts of our region lack water for critical periods nearly every year, and the interdependence of the two councils means it is a regional issue that affects us all. For Nelson city, the Roding River supply is a critical part of the city’s water resource. The Roding River is a significant tributary of the Wairoa and Waimea river systems and Nelson’s take is also part of the regional issue, given the fact that the Eastern hills catchment is the only significant water resource for the Nelson/Waimea area. Additionally, Tasman District Council supplies water across the boundary to water users in Nelson south. It is for this reason that Nelson city has been involved in the development of the dam proposal right from the outset. It is also important to understand that the dam is the best economic option for a long-term solution to water security in the city. In Tasman, the issue of over-allocation on the Waimea plains, health of the river and the economic consequences of doing nothing are critical and urgent. No one can accuse decision-makers of rushing the process. Sixteen years is already too long and the urgency now is a direct result of failure to address this issue earlier. If the dam proposal does not proceed, water permits on the Waimea plains will be significantly reduced. Those reduced allocations will be subject to regular and significant rationing. Urban supplies will be subject to similar rationing. The independently assessed cost of that is almost $1 billion to the region over the next 25 years. That cost cannot be ignored. The current constructive discussions by the two councils and Waimea Irrigators Ltd are aimed at finding a capital and cost sharing model that gives everyone some certainty that our community can continue to function and prosper. Knowing we have solved the water supply and quality problem for future generations, while making it fair and affordable for ratepayers, is a must-do based on fact, not on pretending there are alternative facts. A message from Waimea Irrigators Ltd.

Proud cat owners from around the country put their felines on show on Sunday during Nelson Cat Club’s annual show, held at Hope Recreation Hall. Hundreds of cats lined up to be judged during the event with owners travelling from as far south as Christchurch, as well as from the North Island. The show was also well attended by members of the public who turned out to admire a range of different breeds. Belgrove cat owner Anna Nicholls has been part of the

Nelson Cat Club for the last three years, which is also how long she has been involved with showing. “My mother was actually involved in the cat club and when she passed away, to keep her memory alive, I decided to join,” says Anna. “I just love the Burmese breed, mainly because they’re the closest thing to a dog. I grew up with them and all of the ones I’ve had would play fetch, they’re just so laid back.” Anna started out with a Burmese male named Zion, which she also used to start

her breeding business. Lola and Otis, which Anna entered into Sunday’s show, are Zion’s offspring and were two from Anna’s first litter. Six judges on the day determined the best of the best, with two making the journey from the USA, three crossing the ditch from Australia and one judge from New Zealand. With about 10 categories in total, the supreme award went to Gold Double Grand Premier Ferrero Milch-Schnitte, owned by Lesley Parker from Wellington and bred by Dixy Katz of Auckland.

It’s been 10 years since Glen and Julie Berkett bought The New Gate Company, and while it’s sometimes felt like a roller coaster ride, they have successfully built up a reputation for quality work and competitive prices that has seen their business thrive. With Glen being an engineer by trade, he and Julie decided to take on The New Gate Company back in 2007 after feeling the need for a change in career. The business also offered the pair the opportunity to challenge themselves, running The New Gate Company alongside their existing business, Splash Time Pools. Under their ownership, the services offered by The New Gate Company expanded, turning a staff of two into a current staff of 10, including Glen and Julie Berkett are proud of how far The New Gate general engineers, powder Company has come in 10 years and are excited for future coaters and an electrical tech- changes to the business. nician. Foxes win women's football league Andrew Board

Richmond Foxes coach John Slotemaker was a little grumpy after his side won the Nelson Bays Football first division women's league on Saturday, "I don't think we played at our best today, I think the pressure of having to win the last game made them not

play as well. It was very frustrating." Richmond had to win the game to win the title but went down to Waimea College 1-0 mid-way through the second half. The Foxes rallied with a goal to Rhea Hopkinson before a late winner to Jimi Slotemaker. John says, despite his displeasure at the way

they won, he was proud of his team. "They've done really well and improved as the season went on. They train well so I'm really pleased for them." The title is Richmond Athletic's third out of a possible four this year, with its top team winning the on-going first division.

Fast and furious racing at Redwood Kevin Barker Round five of the Cutting Edge Signs and Graphics Kartsport Nelson club points championship was held on a chilly morning at The Hits Chocolate Velvet Kart Raceway in Redwoods Valley on Sunday. The racing, however, was far from cold with some red-hot battles across all the classes, with drivers chasing points in the second to last round in the championship. David Pinkerton, racing in

the Briggs Light class, outdrove the championship leader Tony Dyer to take the round win and move a couple of places up the leader board. Carey Burr rounded out the podium in third. Jason Richards had backto-back round wins in the Briggs Heavy class from Nick Stilborn and Ryan Beattie. In the Rotax Heavy Class it was Kevin Barker who put a stop to Bryce Borlase’s fourround winning streak. Kevin won the round ahead of

Bryce with Duncan Barrett third on his return to karting after his roll-over at the Sunbelts in June. Ben Stilborn returned to the top step in the Rotax Light class ahead of Kyle Rankin and Kennedy Stratford who finished third. The racing in the Cadet Rok class was great to watch with battles throughout the field. Up-and-coming talent Lochiel McGregor put a lot of pressure on Ollie Workman but it was Ollie who managed to take the win

Sierra making a big splash Judene Edgar Sierra Thomas is one step closer to attending the New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships in Auckland in October after becoming the first recipient of Summit Property Management’s new ‘Strive to Thrive’ sponsorship programme. Nominated by her mother Mandy, Sierra says that she was “excited and shocked at the same time” to get the news that she’d won the $500 sponsorship. “It felt pretty good”, she says. A member of the Tasman Swim Club, the dedicated 14-year-old trains 17 hours every week, starting at 5.30am five mornings a week, and then a further four times a week after school. Her coach Andy Adair says that he is delighted for Sierra. “I think that it’s enormously important for young people to learn the relationship between hard work and success,” he says. “Talent alone won’t beat hard work.” Sierra’s hard work has already begun paying off. At the New Zealand Open Water Swimming Championships in Taupo in January she won two gold medals and a silver, and at the New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington in March Sierra won bronze medals in the 400m and 800m freestyle. But it was her recent selection to attend a New Zealand development camp that inspired her nomination. In her application her mother Mandy says that, “Sierra has been training extremely hard, and is very focused on trying to achieve her goal to represent New Zealand.” Attending the New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships and attending the development camp are “a major step in the right direction,” she says. Summit Property Management’s general manager Stewart Henry says that Sierra’s nomination really stood out. “Representing New

Zealand in a development squad is a huge achievement, so we wanted to encourage Sierra to keep up her dedication and determination,” he says. “Especially in a solo sport when their friends are off doing other things and they are putting some really hard work in.” Summit’s marketing manager Sinead Ogilvie says that applications are open quarterly and any child can be nominated to be the recipient of $500 cash, to be used towards a goal or dream of their choice whether that be sport, music, an event, or something they have been working hard towards. You can get more details on their Facebook page fb.me/summitpropertymanagementnz

Wrestling a cheesy, fantastic night out Andrew Board Where did I spend my Saturday night? In a church, watching grown men in Speedos wrestle. More specifically, it was the New Zealand version of WWE – Impact Pro Wrestling New Zealand. It was as bizarre as you could imagine, as cheesy, and yet strangely, highly entertaining. The ring was set up in the main room at Annesbrook Church, the lighting was excellent, the big screens and music for the entrances were great and photographers and videographers buzzed around the ring capturing the grimaces and wild faces. I’m no expert, but the wrestling was impressive. They flipped, jumped off the top rope and threw each other into steel barriers. It looked like it hurt. And the story lines were fantastic, not in the sense they were good, but that they were steeped in fantasy. Here were a few of my favourite lines from various fights: “Payback’s a bitch,” from one wrestler to another before receiving a slap to the chest that not only floored him but left him reeling in pain for several minutes. Another wrestler taunted the crowd that he went to a “private school in Wellington”, supposedly confirming his status as a bad guy. Another “bad guy”, an English-

man whose entry music was people chanting “England, England” in the style of a crowd of soccer hooligans, yelled at his opponent “I’m going to kick your stupid Kiwi head”. Charming. And the charm didn’t improve. As one wrestler taunted another for being fat by tipping a bag of nacho chips on his head and rubbing a saveloy onto his body, the crowd chanted “a***hole, a***hole”.

Nelson wrestler Brook Duncan finds himself in a spot of trouble in his light heavyweight championship bout on Saturday night. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport.

As a bit of adult entertainment it was fine, but hearing those chants coming from the mouths of children as young as 7 and 8 did leave a bad taste, especially when they pulled the middle finger to the “bad guy” as they did it. Without a doubt the highlight was watching local man “Brook Duncan”, aka Duncan McDougall, compete for the light heavyweight championship. Duncan had great support in the crowd, including from his three brothers who later took centre stage in the script. Duncan didn’t win unfortunately, but he did himself and his family proud. His athleticism was something to behold and he certainly entertained the crowd – surely the job description. At the end of the night the announcer told the crowd that they would be back in Nelson, and as a three hour show of entertainment you could do far worse. It was fun, it was ridiculous, it was impressive and those who did turn up had a blast. Proof was only two seats away, where a man in his mid-30s, a man I know, was watching from the front row wearing an orange Mexican wrestling mask, his leg jack-hammering like an excited kid who has finally entered through the gates of Disneyland. To him, and many others at church that night, it was spiritual.

Opinion: Crusaders need Nelson Andrew Board Journalist

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The Crusaders played a Super Rugby semi-final in front of a not-so-super semicrowd on Saturday night. There have been various excuses mentioned on social media and predictions of the demise of rugby announced on talkback radio. But the Tasman Rugby Union should be using it as an opportunity to push the case for Nelson to host more regular Super Rugby games. One of the excuses, along with the cold, that has been used is that there is too much rugby for the Christchurch market. Fine, let us take a game or two off your hands. Nelsonians only get three professional rugby games at Trafalgar Park a year, due to sharing the Makos with Blenheim. The city could easily fill our stadium for a Super Rugby game once or twice a year. And remember, Tasman is a union in the Crusaders franchise, a union whose

Why do we get overlooked when Christchurch can’t even sell out its tiny ground for a semi-final? The last Crusaders game to be hosted in Nelson was in 2015. On that occasion the Crusaders were forced to play outside of Christchurch’s AMI Stadi-

um as it was already booked for the Under 20 FIFA world cup. Nelson was only picked after a push from Crusaders management to get the game moved to Fiji didn’t pan out. A full house of over 16,000 people packed Trafalgar Park for that game. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says Tasman is ready and waiting to host the Crusaders, telling Waimea Weekly, “the position of the

Tasman Rugby Union is that we are willing to assist our partners and host the Crusaders any time they want to play in Nelson.” If the Crusaders continue to ignore us at the expense of rubbish crowds in Christchurch then Tasman should pull stumps and find another Super rugby franchise to line up with, like Taranaki did in 2013 when it left the Hurricanes for the Chiefs.

Waimea Under-6 Red win generation game Simon Bloomberg

Tony, who played half back and fullback for Waimea senior B “for many, many years” says he’s really enjoying coaching the team. He says it’s a good opportunity to give something back to the game and, also, to be involved with his two grandsons. “I think they really appreciate that grandad is their coach and it keeps me active and involved in rugby,” Tony says. “But there’s no bias or favouritism – I’m coach on the field and treat all the kids the same, but off the field I’m granddad.”

Waimea Old Boys Under-6 Red is a real family affair, with granddad Tony Cropp coaching a team that includes his two grandsons Reuben Baker and Riley Andrews and his daughter and team manager Hope Baker. Tony’s other daughter and mother of Reuben, Jess Baker, is also involved as one of the team’s dedicated supporters. And the family has had plenty to get excited about this season with the team winning all 11 of its games including Saturday’s match against Waimea Under-6 Makos at Jubilee Park. “They are playing really well,” Hope says. “We’ve won all our games although we’ve had a couple of close ones against Stoke and Huia.”

Trael gets top Wanderers award Simon Bloomberg Inspirational mid-fielder Trael Joass capped a magical season when he was named the Sports Person of the Year at the Taylors Wanderers Rugby Club prize-giving held at Brightwater on Saturday. Trael was a deserving winner of the Randall Distributors Cup after a season that was headlined by his selection for the New Zealand Sevens team. It was a remarkable achievement by the 24-yearold who was told by a cardiologist that it would be too risky to continue playing sport after he suffered from heart problems in 2014. Trael, who also won the Randall Distributors Cup in 2015, says “it’s a cool award to get”, although he modestly insists he doesn’t deserve it after playing just “six or seven games” for Wanderers this season. “I didn’t even know I was eligible so it was a bit of a shock,” Trael says. “But it’s always cool to be able to represent Wanderers like that and an honour to get the award.” Trael says it’s been an exciting season that started with the Tasman Makos Sevens winning the South Island championship and reaching the quarterfinals of the national champs. That led Trael and Tasman team-mates, Andrew Knewstubb and

Tong Ng Shiu, being selected for the national squad which Trael says was a “massive honour”. However, Trael says achieving his dream of becoming a full-time professional rugby player presented some challenges after the New Zealand Sevens team failed to make any finals. “It’s one thing to realise your dream and be selected to play for your country, but it’s another thing not succeeding in a team that’s used to winning. There are all sorts of questions around why you aren’t performing and who’s to blame, so it was very challenging.” Trael says he can’t wait for next season to put the record

the Tasman Makos for another two years. He says the big goal is to try and make the travelling squad for the Sevens and ultimately gain selection for the team to play at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April. However, Trael says his first priority will be playing for the Tasman Makos in the Mitre 10 Cup starting on August 17. Tasman plays its first game against Canterbury at Trafalgar Park on August 18. “That’s a big challenge in itself. I’ve been with Tasman for three years now and I want to give it my all to try and get some good game minutes.” The Wanderers awards also recognised George Paki Paki who won the Norm Berkett Award for service and dedi-

Have your say on the future of Mapua’s waterfront

Draft Freedom Camping Bylaw 2017

Feedback open 8 July – 14 August 2017 Over the past six months we’ve spent a lot of time talking with the Mapua community about the future of Councilowned land near the Mapua waterfront. Now we want to know what you think. The Mapua Waterfront: Options for the Future consultation document has been developed following extensive work with community groups and organisations in Mapua. We’ve proposed options for the future development of waterfront land, and outlined some alternatives. Find out more: Head to our Public Consultation page for more information about the options and to make a submission – www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Visit any Council service centre, library or Mapua Community Library to read a hard copy of the document and pick up a submission form.

We’re consulting on a Draft Freedom Camping Bylaw intended to allow for freedom camping in suitable locations, while safeguarding the environment and the wider community’s ability to enjoy their local parks, swimming holes and neighbourhoods.

We have declared a small-scale management programme (SSMP) to deal with the marine pest Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii), referred to as Sabella.

Now is your opportunity to have a look at what is proposed, and let us know if you would like to see anything included or changed in the draft bylaw.

The objective of the programme is to control of Sabella in the Tasman District over the next three years to:

If you are aged 12 – 24 years old and live in the Tasman District, then we want to hear from you. This is your chance to have your say about what you think is important for young people. Young people are a vital part of the Tasman community and it’s important we hear the voice of young people to ensure we understand your needs. What you tell us will help inform the Long Term Plan, which shows what we will be doing for the next 10 years. This is your chance to have a say about what happens in the Tasman District. Even the smallest voice can make a big difference, so tell us what is important to you! Simply fill out the survey before 20 August and be into win a UE Boom. www.surveymonkey.com/r/voiceofyouth

Scholarships for Tasman's youth leaders Are you aged between 15 – 20, live in the Tasman District and keen to attend a youth leadership opportunity this year? Then we can help, with $200. Tasman $200ships are available any time of year to support young people in our district attend courses like Outward Bound or Spirit of Adventure. The application process is simple – visit www.tasman.govt.nz/link/200

The draft bylaw proposes to permit freedom camping in several areas. It also sets out a range of locations where freedom camping is not permitted. The draft bylaw would provide greater enforcement powers than the Council has had in the past. All the details are on our website – head to www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Tasman parks become magical playgrounds After the success of Magical Park during Parks Week earlier this year, we’ve decided to offer the virtual reality playground in parks throughout the District until mid-2018. From 1 July, children and families can play Magical Park at six parks around the District. Where can I play? Magical Park is aimed at 6 – 11 year olds and will be available at the following parks: • Ben Cooper Park, Richmond: July – October 2017 • Bill Wilkes Reserve, Richmond: July – October 2017 • Decks Reserve, Motueka: November 2017 – February 2018 • Mapua Recreation Reserve: November 2017 – February 2018 • Faulkners Bush, Wakefield: March – June 2018 • Lord Rutherford Park, Brightwater: March – June 2018 Visit www.tasman.govt.nz to find out more.

Not ready for the building inspector? Cancel early, no fee It's important to us to deliver a timely and efficient building inspection service. We know it’s always a bit of a juggle to everything to line up at the right time for the inspection. In recent months, we have had an increase in the number of instances where the job is not ready when the inspector arrives on site. This isn’t efficient use of our resources and it is causing frustration with other industry partners who miss out on an inspection booking for that day. We cannot emphasise enough the need to be certain that you will be good to go on the day - so we're introducing an option to cancel early without incurring any extra cost. Cancel by 2.00 pm the day before the booking - no charge From 1 August 2017 you can cancel an inspection booking if you are not ready, until 2.00 pm the day before, without incurring any fees. Cancellation after 2.00 pm will incur a cancellation fee of $150. Any inspection we encounter not ready at the time of inspection will result in a failed inspection and will incur the standard $150 re-inspection fee.
