Drivers save crash victim

Simon Bloomberg

The first person on the scene of last week’s dramatic car crash near Mapua is praising the actions of everyone who helped out, including a man who probably saved the life of one of the drivers. Nelson’s Vincent Dickie and his partner Pania were driving on the Ruby Bay By-

Pass near the turn-off to Mapua at around 5pm on Thursday when two cars collided directly in front of their car. Vincent says one of the cars involved in the crash flipped and caught fire but fortunately a passerby had a fire extinguisher and raced over and put the fire out. “The accident took place in what seemed like slow motion,” Vincent says. “The two

cars collided and one car flipped onto its bonnet, went high in the air and rolled and bounced over the guard rail, losing a wheel and pieces flying everywhere. “It landed upside down with the underneath of the engine on fire not far from us. It was surreal as we worked out what to do on a busy highway at 5pm. “First thing to do was try find a fire extin-

guisher from passing vehicles. Fortunately, someone had one and a guy got the fire out - who knows what would have happened if he hadn’t.” Vincent says the man’s actions were a life saver and soon there were about 20 people on the scene helping out.

“Yes, of course. It’s competition. I think it’s always good anyhow, it was before when we had them here, then we lost them and the airfares got quite expensive again.”

“Yeah, it’s good to have competition.”

“I think so, yeah, a bit of competition will be good, as long as they’re not late like they normally are on the TV.”

“Yes, it gives you more options, probably cheaper fares which everybody needs.”

Emergency services attend the crash on the Ruby Bay By-Pass near the Mapua turn-off last Thursday.

Crash victim lucky to live FROM PAGE 1 “We had to carefully flip the car to free the young guy who was trapped. We secured the car with a tow rope onto the guard rail and waited for emergency services to arrive. The young guy had a broken leg and I don’t know what else in-

ternally, but he was conscious and I was amazed he was still alive after what we saw. Airbags played an important part in saving him. “I spent a little time with the other crash victim, a lady in her early 60s, and all I can say is they are both lucky to be alive - she had airbags too.

Vincent says he is “blown away by the good people who put their lives at risk to put out the fire and flip the car back. He also says it’s a “great idea to have airbags and a fire extinguisher on board your vehicle”. “Thank goodness for emergency services and the rescue helicopter.”

The $9 fares might be a gimmick, but Jetstar says its cheap fares are here to stay. Jetstar announced on Monday that Nelson was one of four regional centres that it would be flying to as part of an expansion of regional routes. Jetstar says a flight to Auckland will cost $49 one way and to fly to Wellington will cost just $45. Head of Jetstar New Zealand, Grant Kerr, says he was smiling “ear to ear” after the announcement at Wellington airport, and he told Waimea Weekly that it will be great news for Nelson. “We know we can grow the region from the tourism perspective and get more Nelsonians flying. We’re here for the long haul and we’re excited.” Jetstar is the third airline to

confirm it will start flying to Nelson this year, but unlike Kiwi Regional Airlines and Originair, it will compete directly against existing carrier Air New Zealand. Jetstar says it will mean much lower prices for Nelson air travellers. Nelson MP Nick Smith says the announcement is an “exciting step in our region’s future.” Tasman district councillor and Nelson Airport director, Judene Edgar says Jetstar’s decision is good news for regional businesses, residents and visitors. “Jetstar has recognised that there is a lot of capacity for growth within the Nelson-Tasman market and the competition that they help bring is really good news,” she says. Jetstar will start flying from Nelson to Auckland on December 1 this year, it will fly

WARRANTY

the route 27 times a week. The Nelson to Wellington service will start on February 1 and will see 21 flights between the two cities each week. Nelson is the only centre that has two destinations as part of the announcement. Editor’s note: Waimea Weekly has long-backed Jetstar’s entry into the market in Nelson. We feel this is one the most significant events in Nelson for several decades. For businesspeople, those travelling to family events and, of course, people going on holiday, this news will be a welcome relief. It will also open up our region to more visitors, which is fantastic for our economy. We at the Weekly are proud to have played a role in voicing the concerns of Nelson air travellers and encouraging Jetstar into our skies.

Development on track for Christmas Simon Bloomberg The multi-million dollar redevelopment of Richmond Mall supermarket Pak ‘n Save remains on track with the new checkout area expected to be completed before Christmas. Pak ‘n Save Richmond is being redeveloped to increase its size by 750 square metres to accommodate a new checkout area and loading dock. The redevelopment started in January when contractors Coman Construction started demolishing the adjacent Powerstore building and the construction stage will be completed before the busy pre-Christmas period. “It’ all progressing as per timetable,” Roger Davidson, the

South Island property and development manager for Foodstuffs South Island Ltd which owns the Pak ’n Save franchise, says. “There will be some internal fit-outs that will be delayed over Christmas and New Year and done in February and March but all the construction will be completed. The new entrance and new checkout will hopefully be available before Christmas which will be an improvement for shoppers.” Roger says the redeveloped checkout will be “moved forward 10 to 15 metres” from its present location and feature an improved layout and more selfscan checkouts. He says the redevelopment will make the Richmond Pak ‘n Save com-

parable to the bigger stores in Christchurch. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the redevelopment has gone smoothly “with minimal disruptions” for customers. She says the new loading bay will be completed in about six weeks while the area that had been closed off will be open again in time for the school holidays. Belinda says the next big plans for the Richmond Mall are to construct a covered pedestrian walkway joining the mall with Kmart and The Warehouse complex on the opposite side of the car park. Although “it’s not signed off yet” Belinda expected it to be completed before Christmas.

Blackcaps coming back to Nelson: Nelson’s Saxton Oval will again play host to the New Zealand cricket team this summer, with two One Day Internationals confirmed for the venue last week. The games – both against Sri Lanka – will be played on December 31 this year and January 2, 2016. It’s the third summer in a row that Nelson will have played host to the Blackcaps, with three Cricket World Cup games also being played here earlier this year. Resident lucky to be alive: Two Hardy

St East renters are lucky to be alive after a fire started in the lounge of their two storey house last Wednesday night. Firefighters were alerted to the property by a 111 call at around 10.30 after the tenants, who were watching TV upstairs, smelled smoke coming from the downstairs room. “All the clothes, and paper and kindling and firewood were stacked around a freestanding fireplace, and had caught on fire,” says senior station officer Craig Davies. “There was also a clothesline strung across the top of the fireplace which had failed, and clothes had dropped onto the fireplace and caught on fire.”

NBA star inspires: New Zealand’s basketball sensation Steven Adams was in Nelson last week, hoping to inspire the next generation of top basketballers. The Oklahoma City Thunder basketballer shot to fame after starring in the world’s toughest basketball competition, the NBA, was in town to host a New Zealand Academy camp with his mentor and former NBL player Kenny McFadden.

Lego competition attracts hundreds

NELSON & TASMAN

A model of the Star Wars spaceship Millennium Falcon, with 5195 pieces and costing over $13,000, will be just one of "stunning sets" on display at the inaugural Brickwater Lego Exhibition and Competition in Nelson. Initially, Brickwater was just going to be a low-key event for kids to raise funds for the Nelson Shoshin Kendo Club. However, Brickwater generated so much interest from Lego-maniacs that it has grown into a monster, already attracting "300 to 400" entries from around the country. "We just wanted to organise a fundraiser for our son Lachlan's Kendo Club," one of the organisers, Paul Hunt, says. "He's also keen on Lego so we decided to mix the two and run a Lego competition for the kids. “But once we started talking about it, all the adult collectors got involved and it started to grow. We had one guy in Dunedin get in touch with us and say he was coming with his model of an entire city - he's going to need three extra bags to bring it up to Nelson. Paul says some of the models that will be on display are "phenomenal" and are "almost art" with a "crazy amount of detail".

Local builder is top apprentice Simon Bloomberg

The Top of the South’s top building apprentice, Shaun Campbell, reckons he has learned from the best in the business. But then he would say that because Shaun, who was named the Upper South Island Region’s Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year in Nelson on Saturday, works for his father Russell. Shaun, aged 20, trained through Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and works for his father’s home building company Inhaus Developments. “I’ve always enjoyed helping dad out so I suppose being a builder was meant to be,” Shaun says. “I picked up my first plastic toy hammer when I was two or three and have been building things ever since.” However, both Russell and Shaun admit that being boss and worker as well as father and son “has had its moments” “It can be testing, but we usually work really well together,” Russell says. “Shaun is a good builder and shows a lot of attention to detail he’s also very good with our clients.” Shaun, who attended Garin College, agrees that building a good relationship with clients is almost as important as building a good house. “Over the past year I have had to develop my communication skills to deal with both clients and subcontractors. The thing I love the most about building is seeing the smile on a client’s face after finishing a project to a high standard.” The judges rated Shaun highly for his competence in his knowledge of the industry, and in the way he managed his project submission. Shaun’s attention to detail that showed through in the project and his willingness to always look at ways of improving the way he

does things were also commended. Shaun was awarded a range of products and tools, $2000 to spend at Carters, and a spot at an Outward Bound Course. Second place was awarded to Zac Forbes, 26, from Nelson and employed by Craig Finnie Building. Shaun will now compete against the winners from the other nine regions at the national competition in Auckland, on October 8-9.

CHARITY RIDE: Murray McCaskey is promoting a charity ride through the Rainbow Station next year. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Ride the Rainbow and help raise money for charity The Bible Society’s Richmond Action Group is promoting the fifth edition of its Ride the Rainbow charity mountainbike ride from St Arnaud to Hanmer Springs. One of the organisers, Murray McCaskey says about 50 riders completed the 106km journey the last time it was held in 2014, raising $10,000. Murray says the group uses the funds for distributing bibles to a variety of organisations including hospices and prisons throughout New Zealand and the world.

Murray says the ride is suitable for riders of all ages and abilities and will be fully supported. Riders and their bikes are transported to St Arnaud for the start of the ride and from Hanmer Springs back to Nelson as part of the event. “It’s a fun ride that promotes camaraderie and encourages everyone to enjoy the whole experience,” Murray says. For more information on the February 20 ride, phone Ross Borlase on 5447352.

A special celebration will mark this year’s Merchant Navy Day in Nelson, with a new plaque to be unveiled at Sunderland Pier. Merchant Navy Day is this Thursday, with the annual service at Anzac Park to be held on Saturday, September 5. The plaque will be unveiled at the Neptune Memorial at Sunderland Pier and will commemorate the seafarers of Port Nelson. From the earliest years of Nelson until the 1970s, one of the major locally-owned industries was merchant shipping. Port Nelson was the base for many shipping companies and associated businesses. For much of the twentieth century the

Fly fishing’s most celebrated annual event, the RISE Fly Fishing Film Festival, is heading to Nelson this month. The travelling spectacle serves as a stage for the best filmmakers in the fly fishing industry and allows the fishing community to share their passion for the sport by attending film screenings across the country. In its tenth year, RISE is celebrating a decade of bringing the best fishing entertainment to cinemas around the world. Kiwi audiences can look forward to stunning footage from Iceland, Australia, New Zealand and the USA, presented in high-definition on the big screen. Gin-Clear Media’s Backcountry – ‘South Island,’ is the feature film of the festival. The South Island has vast tracts of some of the most intact, undisturbed natural areas left on our planet— these last truly wild places deliver beauty and isolation in spades, but it is the allure of giant trout in crystal clear water that draws anglers from around the globe to this treasured land. The majority of seafarers continued serving in coasters carrying goods between New Zealand ports. Got a story?

Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company was the biggest employer in Nelson. In those days, many young Nelson men went to sea to earn their living, serving in the scows, colliers and other coastal ships which carried goods between ports around New Zealand, or in larger foreign-going vessels, says Merchant Navy Association Nelson secretary Ben Gibbs. “Merchant seamen from Nelson also played a crucial part in both world wars. At the outbreak of the second world war the Royal Navy was in desperate need of auxiliary ships and of experienced seamen to operate them.” Merchant ships were often requisitioned

Thanks for honesty: I would like to thank Murray Dowie for his honesty recently. He accidentally knocked the wing mirror off our car as our street is narrow with lots of cars parked on the road. He left his business card on the windscreen and said he’d pay for the repair – which he did! Murray, your honesty was much appreciated. Linda McCutcheon. Supporting new airlines: Supporting the new airlines coming to Nelson is not just about Air New Zealand slashing the fares to the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch because of the competition. It's more about giving us direct access to other regional airports without having to go through Wellington or Christchurch. The new airlines will potentially give us access to fly direct to places like Palmerston North, Hamilton (both ex Air New Zealand routes) and Dunedin, while adding more competition to the main centres. Bring it on!!! Rosie Grant. The business of dying. Through your newspapers I would like to thank Val and Laurie Anisy from Anisy’s funeral home in Cambridge St Richmond. Recently my companion of 15 years died and I had to take care of the funeral arrangements. At first I contacted another funeral directors but I have to say that when it became obvious to them I did not have very much money I felt as though they couldn’t get rid of me quick enough and frankly were just not interested. Maybe

I am naive but I really struggled with that. I just assumed that there was a funeral package to suit all incomes. My last desperate call was to Val at Anisys Funeral home in Richmond opposite the town hall. I was pretty much a mess by the time I got to her, I was genuinely starting to panic. She put on the jug, got out the biscuits and sat down with me. When I explained I had very little money she still treated me with dignity and respect. Even Laurie Anisy popped out to Bunning’s that night to get a toolbox (my partner was a mechanic) to put the ashes in a bit later, he came back and made a name plate to pop on the side. This was all unasked for and I’m sure at very little profit to him. But this gesture meant the world to me and it only cost me $40 as opposed to the $1100 for a wooden ashes box I was previously quoted by the “flash” undertakers. Even taking the body to the crematorium was made easier by the support this couple gave me. Val and Laurie, thank you for your genuine caring of me in my time of need and thank you for helping me give Jamie the send off he would have liked. I want others to know that you don’t have to get whacked with bills of thousands of dollars to have a decent, loving and professional funeral. Thanks also to the staff at Winz. I appreciate your help. L Boreham. Renters lucky to escape fire: Why dry your clothes over the fire? [You're] asking for trouble. Brian Gower.

Man arrested for Richmond rape: Well done, Nelson Police. Jill Stanger. Name and shame required, I think. Good job, Nelson Police. Now let's hope karma does its thing. Janelle Thorpe. Sickness hits local schools: Dunno about the flu, but my daughter and some of her friends got it bad. Body aches, high temps, coughing, snotty, it's been a shocker. I've never seen her so sick. Angela Hellewell. Football president retires: Well done Stu Reid, you deserve a much needed break, you can now sit back and relax. Louise Freeman. You are a true champion my friend, the club is in a much better place due to all the hard work you have put in over the nine year period, Blair and Jessie would be very proud of you! Your life membership is fully deserved and I look forward to sharing a few quiet ones and more than likely a few loud ones with you on the deck. Your leadership will be sorely missed. Michael McQuillan with children from Komave School on the Coral Coast in Fiji after handing over school stationary supplies to the school.

Local donations help Fiji kids Simon Bloomberg

Village schools and kindergartens on Fiji’s Coral Coast received a special delivery late last month when Richmond’s Mike McQuillan handed over school stationary donated by four Nelson businesses. Mike has been holidaying in Fiji “two or three times a year” since travelling there with his daughter Aleisha four years ago. He has enjoyed the Fijian’s hospitality so much that he decided to give something back when he returned to there for

his latest winter break. So, with generous donations from Donaldson Civil, Discover Motorhomes, Thompson Daly Accountants, Richmond Cars and Commercials and Warehouse Stationary, he purchased about $1000 worth of stationary to take to schools on the Coral Coast. “I went over there the first time and fell in love with the place,” Mike says. “So this time I wanted to give something back to the people over there. “I’m a self-employed contractor so I approached all the

companies I deal with and they made donations to buy the stationary. When I went to Warehouse Stationary to get the books they said straight away they’d give me 50 per cent off. “Everyone was so generous. All I had to do was pay for three extra suitcases and deliver the books.” Mike says the reaction of the children when he handed over the stationary was “absolutely priceless”. “You should have seen the expressions on their faces - they just lit up. That’s why I can’t wait to do it again.”

Everybody enjoys being out on the water in the summertime, whether its catching a few fish, waterskiing or heading off down the sounds for the weekend, but there a few safety tips you should follow. Here are the top 10 tips for a safe summer on the water: 1. Wear a lifejacket. 2. Carry two forms of communication. 3. Check the weather forecasts, tides and swell. 4. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. 5. Carry enough fuel for your trip and some in reserve. 6. Take safety equipment, including a first aid kit, spare rope, a second form of propulsion, and a bailer. 7. Switch on navigation lights from dusk ‘til dawn. 8. Have an observer when towing – it takes three to ski. 9. Keep to 5 knots (9 kph or a fast walking pace) within 50 metres of another vessel or swimmer and 200 metres off the shore. 10. Make sure the bung is in before you launch.

Totaradale Golf Club’s top players produced some remarkable comebacks to win the Sloan Trophy for the first time in 18 years when they defeated Nelson 4-2 in the final played at the Tasman Golf Club course at Kina Cliffs. The Totaradale team celebrated its victory at their clubrooms on Saturday after winning a close final and even tighter semifinal the previous weekend. No1 player Hamish McWhinnie had to win a sudden death play-off in the morning’s semifinal against Motueka to secure Totaradale’s place in the final before Hamish and Steve Cox produced gritty fight backs to help win the afternoon’s final. “We were tied at three-all against Motueka and Hamish had to play a sudden-death hole,” team selector Bill Vercoe says. “He hit a great drive and had it won from there but then we had a real battle in the final too. “Hamish was four down with six holes to play in the final and still managed to halve his

Free casting clinic for trout fly fishers

FLY FISHING: Nelson Trout Fishing Club's, from left, Maree Peterson, Fred Frahm, Ray Day and Brian Richards will be helping out at the club's fly casting clinic at Garin College this Sunday. People are encouraged to come along to the free clinic and begin to learn the art of fly fishing from the best. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg Anyone who is interested in finding out how to fly fish can take the first steps to learning the art at the Nelson Trout Fishing Club's free fly casting clinic at Garin College this Sunday. But the club's first female president, Maree Peterson, warns it won't be easy. Fly fishing is much harder than the more popular spin-fishing and Maree says it can take years to master the skill. "It's not easy," Maree, who has been fly fishing for just three years, says. "You lose a lot of flies and get a lot of tangles before you get it right." And as club member Ray Day explains, it can be hazardous as well as challenging. "The first time I went fly fishing I went out with an expert and caught my first fish straight away. I thought then that it was easy, but it wasn't - it took me another five years to catch my next one. "But I did catch the trees behind and I even caught my own ear. It's not easy at the start." However, all the club members agree that the benefits of learning to fly fish are worth all the effort because it opens up a whole new world of angling. Fred Frahm says there's nothing better than walking alongside a river and seeing a trout rising to the surface to feed, and then casting a fly to it and catching it. "Fly fishing isn't easy to learn and it has some limitations, but it's also a lot of fun. It's a different type of fishing altogether," Fred says. Anyone is welcome to attend the fly casting clinic that will be held on the back sports field at Garin from 9am to midday on Sunday. The clinic is free and all rods and equipment will be supplied. For more information on the clinic and the Nelson Trout Club email Maree at maree@ellisauto. co.nz

Waimea College wins under-16 competition The Waimea College under-16 rugby team won their final against Renwick 44-5 at Waimea College on Saturday. The weather was kind enough for a great game of rugby. Renwick came out fired up and it was looking like a real nailbiter with Waimea’s brilliant defence holding out Renwick phase after phase, at times pushing them back with commitment that has been absolutely outstanding in the later half of their season After a 12 game round-robin format, Waimea secured their home semi-final by winning 11 of their 12 outings. Waimea accumulated a massive 56 out of a possible 60 points for the season to get a home semi against Blenheim’s Harlequins. Waimea won 37-0 and then watched as Renwick managed to out play Stoke for a place in the final. “The season has been difficult at times,” said Waimea manager Tony Terrell. “We’ve had numerous injuries to key players and therefore fielded a lot of games with only one or two reserves and a number of players out of position at times. “But the boys have dug deep and my hat goes off to coaches Glen Thompson and Glenn

And they’ve just stood up and beaten the challenges through absolutely outstanding defence and really worked as a team throughout the season made successful by their attendance to some inspirational training sessions” The final whistle blew and Waimea celebrated a 44-5 win over Renwick who were a well deserved runner-up for the season. Tries came from Braydon Harvie, Jake Goeddert, Nick Terrell, Josh Kelly (2), Shylo Kouka (2). Justin Barr kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Netball season down to semi-finals Carol Cook

It is now down to the “nitty gritty" part of the Nelson Netball season as teams prepare for semi-finals. All grades, including the elite grade, will play on Saturday at Saxton Stadium. In the Premier grade, Jacks OPD, Richmond Glass, Prices Pharmacy A and Stoke NBS looked to be top four contenders, however a serious challenge came from promoted Suburban Russell Curtains. Stoke did not cement their semi-final berth until after they had accounted for Prices Black last Thursday. While Suburban could be disappointed at missing a semi spot, they should consider their debut season in Premier to be a successful one. The top two seeds, Jacks OPD and Richmond Glass, will meet at 4:45pm with the winner going straight through to next week’s final, while the loser will

meet the winner of Prices A and Stoke NBS who play at 3:30pm. Prices have bragging rights over Stoke as they have been the victors on both occasions by a six goal margin. Prices have the better record, winning the first 12 games of the competition, however they have stumbled in the last two games when they have gone down to Richmond and Jacks. Coach Mandy Whiting hopes to have a full roster on Saturday with only Christta Burrows in doubt with illness. Prices defensive end has been increased with the inclusion of Rebecca Watene from Prices Black. With the new 5.3 rule, players must have played three games for a team before they can take the court for a semi or final. Prices were not happy with their performance against Richmond, when they were guilty of wrong options on attack and they did not capitalize on turn-

ting their best foot forward they are under no illusions that Jacks will be easy opposition without the services of Lisa and Aimee Book, who will be absent due to basketball commitments. They do have capable substitutes in Kim Starnes and Belinda Kolomatanga. Player/coach Kathleen Thornalley is aware of Jacks skilled mid court and their shooting combinations, however she does have faith in her experienced defenders to create the turnover ball. Richmond will be looking to focus on the basics and put their best game possible out on court, knowing that should they lose there is another opportunity to play the winner of Prices and Stoke. Jacks have a well-balanced lineup, with coach Robyn Leonard having the luxury of three accurate shooters in Rebecca James, Leanne Cook and Hannah Mead. Jacks will begin the game as favourites.

overs gained. However, they can take heart from their first half against Jacks last week. Coach Whiting believes their strength is as a unit and her charges will enter the game on a positive note. Stoke NBS coach Abbie Cook is hoping her team can “put it out there on the day,” despite the fact that six of the roster will contest the Motueka Grade 1 final in the morning. Stoke have displayed “patches of form” with “patches of a team” in recent weeks due to player availability, injury and sickness. While Abbie admits her girls only squeaked into fourth place, she believes Prices are not unbeatable. The Thomson sisters, Megan and Jaunita, have had sterling seasons, with Megan anchoring the offensive end and returning impressive statistics while Jaunita has been handy at the other end of the court. Although Gordon says there are some "good operators" like Dan Busch and Dan Moore in the sixhour race, the event is suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities. "The three-hour race especially is aimed at families and less experienced people. That's what the three-hour is all about." Many of the teams that have entered the Wily Weka were out practising their map reading skills in the club's orienteering event held at Nelson College on Sunday. Brent Edwards won the orange course event ahead of Sally Lattimore, with Gilbert Robertson third. The Wily Weka starts at Saxton Pavilion at 9am this Sunday. Hundreds of outdoor adventurers will be roaming the hills and streets around Richmond and Stoke this Sunday, searching high and low for an elusive Wily Weka. The Nelson Orienteering Club is holding its second Wily Weka Challenge rogaine which will feature teams of two to five people racing for either three or six hours to find controls that have been marked on a map. Controls are allocated points depending on their difficulty and the team with the most points wins - teams returning after the cut-off time lose points for every minute they are late. Race planner Gordon Sloane says there are 75 controls on this year's map and it's "highly unlikely" any teams will collect maximum points. However, Gordon says there's an added incentive this year with a prize for the first team in the three and six-hour race to find a photo of a Wily Weka that will be located at one of the controls. "I defy anyone to get all the controls," Gordon says. "If they do, I'll shout them a beer. "The straight line distance between all the points is 56km and nobody's going to be able to average 10 kilometres an hour on the terrain. There will also be some curly ones and if you want to climb up high, you'll be able to. Gordon says the Wily Weka Challenge has so far attracted 85 teams and 230 competitors in either the three or six hour race. Entries have been kept open for the rest of the week but will not be taken on the

REGISTER NOW! Have you got things you don’t want any more but aren’t worth selling?

On Second Hand Sunday, people can take away the stuff you don’t want for FREE!

How does it work?

Register by going online to the Tasman District Council or Nelson City Council website <search word: Second Hand Sunday>. You can also call either Council’s Customer Service Centres, 03 543 8400 for Tasman and 03 546 0200 for Nelson.

At the request of the adjacent landowners, Tasman District Council is notifying its intention to stop a Service Lane which runs off Oxford Street in Richmond near the corner of Queen Street. The proposal to stop this Service Lane is being considered pursuant to Schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 1974. The road stopping application is being made by BP Oil New Zealand Limited, which owns land on both sides of the service lane. If the applicant is able to acquire the service lane, it will amalgamate it with adjoining land. If the road stopping is approved this will facilitate a more logical use of its land when the present site is upgraded. For further information please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council on Ph. 03 543 8400 or Email: robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz Any objections to the proposed road stopping should be made in writing to the address below and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 14 September 2015. This is the second of the two notices required under the Local Government Act 1974.

Notice of Road Stopping At the request of the adjacent landowners, Tasman District Council is notifying its intention to stop a portion of un-named and unformed legal road which runs off Stringer Road in Redwood Valley. The proposal to stop this section of unformed road is being considered pursuant to Schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 1974. The land is shown as Section 1 on SO Plan 488508. The land area is approximately 7282 square metres. The road stopping application is being made by Tasman Limited, which owns all the land adjacent to the road to be stopped. If the applicant is able to acquire the land involved, it will amalgamate it with adjoining land. If the road stopping is approved this will facilitate what the applicant believes will be a more logical subdivision when that adjacent land is subdivided. The road proposed to be stopped is being replaced with Eban Road in a slightly different location. Plans of the proposed road stopping are available by emailling: info@tasman.govt.nz. Plans may also be viewed at the Richmond Office of Tasman District Council. Copies of plans, and this public notice, will also be available on the Council’s website. For further information please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council, Ph. 03 543 8400 or Email: robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz Any objections to the proposed road stopping should be made in writing to the address below and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 28 September 2015.
