Neighbours 'saved my life' Simon Bloomberg

Bill Morris reckons his neighbours saved his life and his house, after they got him to safety and then helped fight a fire that destroyed the garage on his Main Road

Hope property on Monday. The 87-year-old was asleep in his house when a fire started in his nearby garage at around 3pm. The flames were so intense they started blistering the paint on the back wall of his house 10 metres away and

Bill says "another five minutes and I would have been a goner". "I was lying there asleep and Dick (Barker) from next door came in and said 'your shed's on fire, we'd better get out'. I looked out and all I could see in the shed was a

sheet of flames, so we got out quick. "We had to go out the front door - it was too hot at the back. The paint on the house was starting to blister and it would have

Santa Claus is comin’ to town, in fact he’s been and gone and left a number of happy boys and girls in his wake.

The Richmond Pak ‘n Save Santa Parade took over Queen St on Sunday, featuring thirty-two floats, including the jolly old man himself. As usual, hundreds lined the main street

to catch a view of Santa, as well as enjoy a variety of other eye-catching, tinselcoated floats, including a steam machine, fire truck and American muscle car, plus, the Richmond, Wakefield and Brightwa-

ter Scouts, marching groups and plenty of elves and angels. Organiser Kim Quint says this year’s parade was amongst some

of the best Richmond had seen. “I think the calibre of floats was really good, people put in a lot of effort.” The parade ended with the announcement of the winning floats, third place going to the Waimea JAB Rugby Club. Ray White Real Estate finished in second place and received $300 worth of Pak ‘n Save vouchers thanks to their gingerbread house and accompanying gingerbread men, while the big prize of $500 of Pak ‘n Save vouchers went to Grace Church, whose float depicted the nativity, along with a live band. and members of the Wakefield Church, checking to see if he is alright and bringing him food. "They are all looking after me so well," he says. Bill says he was insured and work has already started clearing the remains of the garage from the property. "I've been paying insurance for 62 years and never had a claim, so I suppose I'll make up for it now," he says. It's been a tough year for Bill, who has lived on the same property all his life, after his wife of 62 years passed away in February. However, Bill remains cheerful saying he feels incredibly lucky to have such good neighbours and that the fire didn't happen late at night when everyone else was asleep. Bill says the fire inspectors told him that the blaze was started by a rat chewing through wiring in a chest freezer, causing a spark that ignited the rat's nest.

‘I didn’t even know I was pregnant’

Why pay more than you have to, to get your house sold ?

Imagine only having eight hours to prepare yourself for becoming a parent? That was the reality for Nelson couple Charlene Wells and Eamon Parkes, who didn’t even realise Charlene was pregnant until she went into labour on Thursday morning. Now they have a healthy 7lb 9oz baby boy named Carlo. “I had back pain on Wednesday night which got worse, so we went to A&E early on Thursday morning,” says Charlene. They ran some tests on Charlene to see what the cause of pain was. They also suggested doing a pregnancy test – which came back positive - and then an ultrasound confirmed that she was in fact between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant. Charlene then gave birth to Carlo on Thursday after 12 hours of labour. Charlene says there were no obvious signs of pregnancy and, because the placenta was at the front of her uterus, she did not feel any kicks or movement from her baby. She had

But despite their happy news, the couple have been given 90 days notice to move out of their current rental due to the owner putting it on the market, and they are on the hunt for a new place in Richmond.

Speed drop at black spot to stay Kate Russell

Road safety improvements at the intersection of Main Rd Stoke and Elms St are one step closer to completion, with Nelson city councillors voting to move forward with a permanent speed reduction at Thursday’s works and infrastructure meeting. There have been two crashes at the intersection this year, which resulted in a temporary speed reduction from 80kmh to 50kmh in August while a crash reduction study was carried out.

Two options were considered for the upgrade. Option one was recommended at Thursday’s meeting, which will see a permanent speed reduction on Main Rd Stoke between Saxton Rd and Salisbury Rd to 60kmh, along with minor improvements. This comes at an estimated cost of $150,000, which will be accommodated within the existing minor improvements budget. Option two was considered to be “too cost-prohibitive,” and would have involved modifications to the intersection layout

The Main Rd Stoke-Elms St intersection. in order to retain the 80kmh speed limit, with an estimated price tag of $650,000 $1.2 million. Eric Davy, chairman of the council’s

works and infrastructure committee, says that reducing the speed to 60kmh is a “very cost-effective” way of making the intersection safer. “We’ll now go out to the community with that decision, and we’d like to see the work get done as soon as possible,” he says. Eric says a small sub-committee of councillors will be formed, and a community meeting at Saxton Field is planned for early March. Other engagement with the community will include letters to adjacent residents, businesses, stakeholders and landowners.

Waimea Intermediate’s new principal Justine McDonald can’t wait to get on her new bike when she starts at the school next term. Justine, who is replacing long-serving principal Cleve Shearer, was officially welcomed to the school with a powhiri last Thursday. A keen cyclist, Cleve had established a tradition of getting around the school grounds on a duty bike and after the powhiri, presented a new ladies duty bike to Justine. “It’s really nice to be here today and see the students have the welcome,” Justine says. “I’m really looking forward to starting here next year.” Justine is moving from Kelburn Normal School in Wellington where she has been principal. Waimea Motors An exciting change is coming to Waimea Motors in Richmond when it becomes an NPD site from January 1. Putting customers first Barry Milne knows a thing or two about the fuel industry and why Waimea Motors has been a success. “I believe our site is so successful because we are focused on our customers’ needs. We know many of them and they are regulars because of the service we provide,” he says. “One of my staff members has been with me for over 25 years and that’s what customers enjoy seeing familiar faces and being looked after.” That won’t change as Barry and his team will be staying on at Waimea Motors. Barry and Cindy Milne at what will become NPD Waimea Motors

Back to where it all started The Mobil station in Gladstone Road has been in the Milne family for 54 years and owner Barry Milne says the timing is right for the change. “Myself and the staff are hugely excited about the changes coming with NPD.” NPD has enjoyed some rapid growth throughout the South Island over the past couple of years and view Waimea Motors as a future Flagship site and a valuable addition to their Retail Network. NPD’s General Manager, Barry Sheridan, says “we are very excited and proud to have

Waimea Motors, which is a very high profile site, join our NPD Retail Network”. Waimea Motors is a real family affair — it has been in the Milne family since 1961, purchased by Barry’s parents Peter and Jo along with two other business partners. From late 1961 the firm changed suppliers to Mobil and in 1975 Peter and Jo became the sole owners of Waimea Motors. Waimea Motors was also the birthplace of NPD which the Milne family started in the 1960s. In the 1990s Barry took over the running of Waimea Motors.

— “I believe our site is so successful because we are focused on our customers’ needs.” — The changeover on January 1 will mean that NPD card holders will be able to use their NPD cards for fuel savings, SuperGold card holders will be able to save 15 cents a litre. In addition, Waimea Motors will accept all supermarket dockets, which means a guaranteed saving of 12 cents a litre, irrespective of the value detailed on the grocery docket.

Joins “NPD are very competitive and are serious in the retail market. Now is the time to go with them, there are great opportunities,” says Barry Milne.

Improving the local experience Barry admits being situated on the left hand side heading out of Richmond town is an advantage, but he says it’s down to personal preference why people buy their fuel from them. “We are born and bred local people and we’ve never shifted. Waimea Motors has been in the family for 54 years and it’s all about loyalty.”

“The site will be a 24/7 Retail Model offering the ability to purchase all grades of fuel from all dispensers on the forecourt and the truckstop outside of normal opening hours. All dispensers can be accessed via the OPT (Outside Payment Terminal) located within the kiosk at the truckstop area. In April/May we plan to remodel the site with our new NPD Retail branding. This will be complemented with a whole new and larger canopy, new and wider spaced pump islands with all new pumps. It will be far more user friendly and will enchance the traffic flow movements for all customers.”

“The planned revamp in April/May next year to the forecourt and the change to NPD branding and colours and what they have to offer is a huge attraction, not only to us but our customers.”

— “We are born and bred local people.” — GM Barry Sheridan looks forward to the many and mutual benefits this new and valued Partnership produces. “Partnering with Waimea Motors enhances our retail network across the South Island. It will be one of our biggest retail sites offering a great service and range of quality products to the market.”

The company has built an enviable reputation for service with the focus on their customers’ needs.

“We believe NPD Card gives the best value to our customers.” Barry Milne is confident of attracting more customers to Waimea Motors because of what NPD can offer with the NPD fuel cards, SuperGold card discounts and supermarket docket savings. The sites remodelling enhancements will also assist with this aspect.

SOLD! Douglas Building Contractor’s House for Hospice opened its doors on Saturday for an open home. The four bedroom home was the brainchild of Douglas Building Contractors owners, Andrew and Ange Douglas. The couple gathered support from several local trades to create the house and will donate all profits from the sale of the house to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Around 200 people turned up to view the house but real estate agent Mitchell Wilson, pictured right with Andrew, says the house had sold before in August. “But we wanted to give everyone the chance paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds to come up, see the house.”

We spend more online: While I am both sympathetic and empathetic towards retailers in Nelson, (as I have previously run a family retail business in the Nelson CBD, and I have friends and family in retail), I am spending more and more online. Quite simply, many retailers in Nelson, and in New Zealand, are guilty of horrendous price gouging. I accept I’ll pay a little more in NZ because of a smaller market, and perhaps a little more still for being off the beaten track in Nelson. What I won’t accept, however, is paying 2-300 per cent (non sale) more than customers do abroad, on anything from whiteware, branded shoes, to electronics. I like to think I am loyal to other Nelsonians, and I won't buy online for the sake of saving $10-20, as in your article. I prefer physical stores. However, even if the government does implement GST, it still wouldn’t make financial sense in many instances to buy local. Interesting article. David West.

I think it's a fair call to chop his bloody fingers off, to teach him a lesson not to take things that don't belong to him! Kimberley Saunders.

I bet those people whose cars he stole would love to teach him a lesson for being so damned stupid coming up with a pathetic statement like that. A total waste of oxygen. Darryn Gray.

House built for Hospice: What a generous offer. Awesome. Angelia Harris.

Car thief: I teach people a lesson: Wow, what an incredibly selfless man to put himself out there doing that for others. Give him a certificate and a mayoral bouquet. Sharon Tarapipi Pi.

New Nbus route for Stoke: Nelson has public transport?? Brian Gower.

That's awesome. What a building team you must have! Carmel Green.

Does that mean we can cut his hands off for touching things that aren't his. Blaise Beach. Valuable community service! Daniel Hawke. What a friggin idiot! Who the hell does he think he is??? Donna Fuller. Gone are the days when one can leave their house and cars unlocked, as this shows that these days you can't trust anyone. Simon Scowen.

This is awesome, what a great tool for Stoke! I’ve always

thought the N bus has been a great addition to our community and now it’s extending and obviously listening to the needs of the community. Well done. Lauren Penney. Atawhai needs more bus times and later buses...PLEASE. Nancy Holden. Demo uncovers father's note: Very cool. Small world. Elena Capstick. It's quite amazing! A nice wee message from beyond the grave. Sharon Tarapipi Pi. That's amazing. Debra Baker.

Well done, you guys. That's awesome. Sharon Fisher.

Club Waimea’s new president Dave Birdling says he has the right team to ensure the club succeeds in the “very competitive” hospitality business. Dave has been a member of Club Waimea’s board for nine years and was elected as president to replace Jan Phipps after she was appointed, along with Mike Carter, to manage the club. Although the Club Waimea president’s term is usually two years, Dave was elected mid-term to replace Jan and will be standing for re-election next May. “It’s a privilege to be elected president of Club Waimea,” Dave says. “However, it’s not a oneperson operation - I’m very much a team person and Club Waimea is very lucky to have a professional team running their operation.” Dave says the future of Club Waimea will depend on it changing with the times and, if necessary, diversifying its operation. The hospitality and caravan park industries are highly competitive and the club’s decision to appoint two “efficient, experienced and dedicated” managers, who fill complementary roles, has enhanced the club’s ability to stay one step ahead. “My vision for Club Waimea is that members have a fun and enjoyable time and that families can also feel part of the club as as family unit

New Club Waimea president Dave Birdling who was voted into the top job last month. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. and that we are a responsible host and create a safe environment for all to enjoy.” Dave says he is looking forward to working with the team and “with all the experience Club Waimea has at its calling” he is optimistic that it can continue to attract a strong membership. Club Waimea has 1295 members and Dave says there’s no reason why it can’t increase to 2000.

Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game

The trout fishing season in the Nelson Tasman area is well underway, and this year our rivers and lakes are providing superb fishing for keen anglers. However, with higher temperatures we see an increase in pressure on our rivers and lakes from locals and tourists, and a risk of

spreading unwanted water weeds and organisms such as Didymo. Our rivers and lakes are under constant threat from the unwanted introduction of pests and it is up to all individuals to ensure their equipment is clean and free of pests before moving between waterways. These pests are easy to transfer, but difficult and costly (or impossible) to control. This summer, freshwater advocates will be out and about at holiday hotspots as part of the Check, Clean, Dry campaign. Their role is educating the public on the campaign's message, as well as giving away useful cleaning items so it’s easier for everyone to do their part.

National candidate wants to ‘catch up’ with locals

Sun Protection Daylong extreme 50+ Lotion is a liposomal sunscreen for skin types 1 and 2. It provides protection for skin that is extremely sensitive to the sun as well as in extreme situations (e.g. in the tropics or mountains). Daylong extreme 50+ Lotion is water-resistant and offers reliable skin protection against the sun thanks to all-round UVA and UVB protection.

National Party candidate for the West Coast-Tasman electorate last year, Maureen Pugh will be in Tasman this weekend for ‘Coffee and Catch Up’ meetings to get feedback from the community on local issues. Maureen has continued to work within communities, inviting and hosting MPs to the electorate so they are well informed, especially about the economic opportunities that exist. “Across the electorate I have hosted visits from a variety of MPs this year including

• Very high protection • Very water-resistant • Nurtures skin with aloe vera and vitamin E • No perfumes, PEG emulsifiers, or additional preservatives

Amy Adams, Steven Joyce, Jo Hayes, Barbara Kuriger, Stuart Smith, Todd Muller, Nuk Korako, Michael Woodhouse, Simon Bridges, Matt Doocey and Nick Smith.” She says it’s important to ensure that Government considers the West Coast -Tasman electorate when decisions are made and to get people in front of these MPs who can provide insights from the front line. National list MP Jo Hayes visited the West Coast in October and is accompanying Maureen

to Tasman this weekend. “Being on the ground and understanding the needs of local communities shows how Government is supporting provincial New Zealand, which helps everyone,” Maureen says. The Coffee and Catch Up meetings will be held this Saturday at the Chateau Rhubarbe in Wakefield at 11.30am and at the Tapawera Hotel in Tapawera at 2pm. Maureen and Jo will also be available in the National Party tent at the Motueka A&P Show on Sunday.

Local wineries win top national awards Brightwater Vineyards led a stellar performance for Nelson vineyards, winning the prestigious New Zealand Champion Pinot Noir Trophy at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards gala dinner held at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The annual awards attracted over 1400 wines from around the country with Nelson vineyards receiving four of the 84 gold medals announced leading up to the gala dinner. On Saturday, the 18 trophies, 36 pure elite gold medals and one elite gold were announced with Brightwater, Waimea Estate and Seifried Estate all winning trophies. Brightwater Vineyards’ winemaker Tony Southgate says winning the trophy for their Brightwater Vineyards Pinot Noir Nelson 2014 was “a great moment for us”. “At Brightwater Vineyards, we all focus on the same goal, and that is to make elegant, concentrated wine, full of personality. We put a huge amount of hours into our vineyards across all of the varieties we grow to ensure we are starting with the best possible fruit, and that makes receiving an award like this one, extra special.”

While Christmas is definitely well known for it’s abundance of food, family, gifts, love and, being in New Zealand, summer sunshine, for many such as Grace Church, it is also a truly special time to remember the greatest gift of all, when God gave us his His Son Jesus Christ. In the lead up to the big day, Grace Church has been hard at work planning some wonderful activities and events to celebrate Christmas and everything it represents. The Kids Christmas Lights Competition is a perfect mix of fun and creativity to get kids in the Christmas spirit. Those taking part are challenged to create a scene depicting what the all important day means to them, following some specifications of course. There are two age categories, one for children aged between 4 and 7 and the other for those aged 8 to 12. All entries must be on a base no bigger than 50 centimeters square, and it must include an element of light (the brighter the better), with an independent (battery) power source. Children have until December 17 to complete their entries and get them to the Headingly Centre so that they can be set up in time for the 3pm start of the much anticipated Light Up Nelson trail. Grace Church is number four on the trail, although they are not part of the overall compe-

tition. Instead they will be providing a ‘pit stop’ service for those travelling round the stunning Christmas light displays. This Pit Stop on the Light Up Nelson trail will be running over three nights from December 18 to December 20 and, at any point during peoples journey round the different homes, they are welcome to take a break at Headingly Centre. Whether it’s a much needed cup of tea or coffee or a toilet break, the Grace Church team will be more than happy to fuel people up before they head back out on the road. The centre will also offer some live music and while people are there, they can take some time to check out the Kids Christmas Lights Competition and vote on which ones they think deserve to win the prizes. Thanks to generous sponsors Ray White Real Estate, Village Cycles and Grace Church, a Grit Scooter will be awarded to first place in each category, while second place in each category receives a family movie pass and both third places receive Richmond Mall Vouchers. During the second week of December, Grace Church will be erecting their giant star above the hills of Richmond. The twelve metre high star will be visible from everywhere around Richmond, and will shine out over the town until Christmas Eve. It is just one way Grace Church hopes to remind people of the true message of

Christmas Events at Grace Church and The Headingly Centre eral stages to complete the project, which aims to be a performing arts and conference facility for the whole community to benefit from. They are now proud to offer the community the addition of 700 square metres of conference rooms, suitable for smaller gatherings such as local community meetings. From the beginning of Headingly Centre’s construction, Grace Church’s goal has been to build a complex that was specifically designed to serve the community. The centre now features a café, full commercial kitchen, and a number of meeting rooms ranging in seating size from 25 through to 350. The centre is already used by a number of community groups for events such as the Tasman District Council new citizenship ceremonies, weddings and funerals. Thanks to the completion of their new meeting rooms, Headingly Centre now has just one further stage to complete, being the main auditorium which will cater to crowds of around 650. No matter how long it’s been between visits, there’s always a familiar face and a friendly welcome. Lydia has recently sold her business to Bayleys in what has been a very positive move, resulting in genuine enquiry and sales. Rural real estate is Lydia’s true passion. There is nothing she enjoys more than being out on the land and working alongside others with similar beliefs and values. Lydia has genuine buyers ready to purchase property, so give her a call regardless of whether you have large farms or small blocks of grazing land, forestry

Brightwater School hosts pet day Jessie Johnston

A dog herding ducks, a shy possum and a shearing demonstration were all part of the Brightwater School pet

day last Friday. The annual event is a favourite amongst students and teachers and kicked off with a demonstration from Ken White, who has previously rep-

resented New Zealand in sheep dog trials. After releasing six ducks, Ken and one of his dogs led them through an obstacle course before separating white ducks from black and shepherding them into separate boxes. Pupils then gathered round as teacher Alan Dobson showed off his shearing skills on student Keely Moir’s pet lamb Daisy. Just before the day came to an end with some dog and owner racing, Brightwater School students joined in a pets parade which featured everything from a turtle, to rabbits, guinea pigs, cats, chooks, a possum, lambs, ponies and, of course, man’s best friend. Pupil Lauren Eyre says she loves pet day because it gives students the chance to introduce their pets and meet everyone else’s, her pet being a one year old rooster called Timmy.

How to make great compost What garden wouldn’t benefit from good quality compost? We are led to believe that it’s rather simple to produce a good quality compost in our own back yard. Well - there are few things that you need to know first. High quality compost needs your attention and it’s important to know the do’s and don’ts as far as what you put in your compost bin. Firstly, to quicken up the process of composting, use shredded leaves, paper, cardboard, vegetable, green, and plant waste. A variety of different material is also important, it will help the speed at which the compost breaks down. After two days you should turn your

pile for the first time. If it is dry, add water and mix evenly. Compost bacteria need air to survive If your compost is steaming, this is a good sign, it means there is a large population of microscopic critters working very hard to make great compost. If it is cold with no heat, your compost would benefit from “activators” which will kick-start your compost. This could be in the form of fresh grass clipping, well-rotted chicken manure or a good commercial activator. Come and talk to us about an excellent compost activator available at Fertilizer NZ.

Jetstar now flying to Nelson Andrew Board

Jetstar’s entry into regional New Zealand begins today with the first flights to Nelson arriving this afternoon. Jetstar announced in September that it would begin flying to Napier, Palmerston North, New Plymouth and Nelson to challenge Air New Zealand on regional routes. The first Jetstar flight to leave Nelson will depart at 2.55 this afternoon,

bound for Auckland, with an official function at Nelson Airport from 1pm. Jetstar CEO David Hall says demand for the regional services had exceeded expectations. “Nearly 3500 customers are booked on the first week’s services with a number of flights sold out and average loads of over 85 per cent.” At the celebration this afternoon, Nelson mayor Rachel Reese will greet Jetstar CEO David Hall, there

Club Waimea has undertaken an update of its gaming room to stay in line with new rules and regulations. As well as adjusting the layout of their machines for ease of access for club members, Club Waimea’s management team, Mike Carter and Jan Phipps, say they have had to make some changes to the existing machines to bring them in line with new rules put out by the Department of Internal Affairs, covering the whole gaming industry. The changes include a systems upgrade and the installation of new note acceptors for all for existing machines, so they incorporate downloadable Jackpots and are able to recognise the new-look New Zealand notes. The club has also retired some of its older machines and has four brand new gaming machines up and running, with a total of 18 machines available all together.

The top seeds showed their class at the New Zealand Challenger beach volleyball tournament at Tahunanui Beach on Saturday, with Teryn Proracki and Patrick Shone winning the men's title and Holly Chandler and Alice Zeimann taking out the women's final. Ten men's and 14 women's pairs turned up to earn New Zealand Tour points with teams coming from Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, Hamilton and Germany. Although there were some big upsets in both competitions, the top seeds prevailed in hot conditions. Patrick and Teryn won their pool before winning the quarter-final in straight sets against Tom Taikato and Nick McDonald-Davis. The top seeds then secured a 15-9, 15-7 straight set victory in the semi against Jack Robb and Nathan Irvine to reach the final against Matt Heyward and Tane MacDonald. In a veteran versus young guns final, Matt produced some big blocks to help take the first set off their more experienced opponents 21-19. Teryn and Pat battled back in the second with some timely points from Teryn to win 21-12, before putting service pressure on Matt and Tane to take the set 15-7

Five hundred line up for Mahana race have both won the half marathon edition of Run Mahana, Nelson Events decided this year not to stage the longer edition of the event . "There are already two half marathons on the calendar around Nelson and Mahana is a tough course in the hot November weather, so we decided to just go with the 10km," one of the organisers Averill West says. "It proved to be good decision because we are very pleased with the numbers this year." The 10km walk, which attracted 108 entries, was won by Steve Pauling in 1hr 2min 48sec, ahead of Barb Pauling

Veteran Nelson runner Simon Mardon was too fast for his rivals, winning Sunday's Run Mahana 10km run in 36min 44sec while Colette Read won the women's race in 45min 35sec. Simon cleared out from the field of 209 runners at the start of the 10km event and his lead was never threatened. Brian Kemp was second in 38min 11sec and Peter van Veen third in 39min 7sec. Collete finished 19th overall, well clear of second-placed female Sandy Vincent who finished in 49min 24sec and third-placed Mandy White (51min 10sec). Although Simon and Collette
