With a warm summer forecast, families and visitors are already looking for the best rivers, lakes, and beaches to swim in over the holidays. A new ‘Can I swim here?’ online tool has been launched, providing extra confidence for Nelson and Tasman residents and visitors this summer. Developed by Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA), ‘Can I swim here?’ shows the most up-to-date water quality information for more than 35 sites across the top of the south, and is freely available at LAWA.org.nz/swim. Tasman District Council’s Environmental Information Manager Rob Smith, says the service complements regular water quality testing and toxic algae monitoring. A timely feature of the site is that it shows toxic algae results for rivers and lakes where this is monitored – the first time this information has been available on a nationwide website. “In addition to our regular monitoring data and reporting on our website for dozens of sites, we also share this key data with LAWA,” says Rob. “We’re keen to give people easy-to-understand information at a glance for the most popular

swimming sites in the district.” The sites listed on LAWA include Kaiteriteri Beach, Lee River Reserve, Rabbit Island main beach, Twin Bridges on the Roding River, Mapua Leisure Beach Park, Alexander’s Bridge in Motueka and Pohara Beach in Takaka. “Each site gives a description of the location, a simple traffic-light style indicator of the water quality status and a graph of detailed readings,” Rob says. “It’s a really good way to help decide which swimming spot to choose.” The LAWA website also contains valuable information for swimmers on other swimsmart things to look out for before taking a dip. This includes advice on checking if the water is clear, avoiding swimming for two days after heavy rainfall, and looking out for possible hazards. LAWA is a partnership between Councils, Cawthron Institute, Ministry for the Environment and Massey University, and has been supported by the Tindall Foundation. ‘Can I swim here?’- www.lawa.org.nz/swim.

Forty years ago, Richard ‘Tosh’ McIntosh bought a caravan. The first place he and his wife Freda took it to was Tekapo. “But no one told us it was cold and miserable, and you needed a heater,” Tosh, a former physical education teacher at Waitaki Boys High, says. So the pair, who live in Oamaru, then decided to take it to Wanaka. “But all my old pupils were there,” Tosh says. “They make a lot of racket and drink a lot of beer and come and harass me.” So finally, they tried Nelson and came to Tahuna Holiday Park. “We set up over by that big tree over there, but it was a little tree back then.”

The weather was good and the living was easy. They brought their three daughters and enjoyed the holiday life. So they just kept on coming back. They changed caravans as the family got bigger as more children came along, and then smaller as they moved away overseas - to London and Australia. But other things have changed in that time too, says Freda. “Society’s changed – we have working mothers and fathers now, so the mother comes with the kids and then has to go back to work and the father flies in. It’s a bit sad really, but that’s society now.” She says if camping has taught them anything it is to just slow down and enjoy time with your family. “Especially the kids. Time

too. “It gets pretty busy but, really, it’s easy living. “You don’t have lawns to mow. It’s nice to get away from home,” says Tosh. In saying that, they don’t let the fact that they are sleeping in a caravan detract from the simple pleasures in life. There is a satellite dish that will go up and connect to the television. However, Tosh says it’s the grandchildren who come in and take over that amenity. They also have barriers to take the edge off the wind. “It’s starting to look a bit like a castle,” Tosh says. Freda says from their little base they can go anywhere in the region – Cable Bay, Kaiteriteri, Takaka. “But right now, we are happy right here – taking it slow.”

Emergency services expecting busy summer Brittany Spencer & Charles Anderson An influx of visitors to the region this summer is expected to keep emergency services on their toes, but they are urging people to stay safe while enjoying their time in Nelson. Over the next few weeks while most people are relaxing, Nelson Bays Police Area Commander Mathew ArnoldKelly says Nelson’s officers will be out in numbers, working hard to keep everyone safe. “The roads are already getting busier and we want everyone to do their bit to reduce the possibility of anyone losing their life or suffering serious harm on our roads this summer.” Motorists are urged to slow down and be patient with visitors, maintain safe following distances and pull over if you need to use your cellphone. If you’re towing a caravan or boat, keep a check for traffic building up behind you and pull over to let them past when it’s safe to do so. Nelson Bays area commander Mat Arnold-Kelly is expecting a busy summer for emergency services. and thinking ahead. “Go easy this holiday season,” he says. “Think about keeping hydrated, think about your alcohol consumption, and think carefully about your actions.” Robbie advises residents to brush up on their first aid skills, know where all the local AED units are, and most importantly, do not hesitate to call 111. To find out where your nearest AED is located, go to aedlocations.co.nz or you can download the free AED

2018 Skatepark Tour rolls into action Judene Edgar Reporter

judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The region’s top talent on skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes are gearing up for the thrills and spills of the 2018 Skatepark Tour. After winning the junior scooter competition for the past two years, eleven-year-old Nikita Turu is looking forward to competing again this year. Nikita has been riding bikes, scooters and skateboards since she was three years old. “I play around with the BMX and skateboard, but I mainly ride the scooter,” she says. Nikita isn’t fazed that she’s usually the only female competing in the tour, but says it would be good if other girls gave it a go. She says that scootering is good for making new friends and she loves the challenge of

learning new tricks. “I go to all the heats I can. Last year I made it to all of them,” she says. The tour now comprises eight heats after successfully expanding to Murchison and Nelson in 2017. “It went really well in Murchison, so we’re keen to go back again for more action,” says Sport Tasman’s tour coordinator Seth Watson. The skate, scooter and BMX competitions are split into junior (5 to 11 years), senior (12 to 17 years) and open grade (18 years and over). The winners from each of the seven heats will be available on the Tasman Youth Council Facebook page and the overall winners are decided based on points from placings at each heat. This year the riders are competing for over $6000 worth of prizes, and Seth says that, in

addition to the main prizes at each heat, there will also be a number of spot prizes. Entries are taken on the day and helmets are compulsory for all competitors. The 2018 Skatepark Tour kicks off at the Murchison Skatepark on Saturday, January 6, starting at 1pm. Next stop is the Mapua Skatepark on January 7 from 3pm, Tapawera Skatepark: January 10 from 5pm, Motueka Skatepark: January 13 from 3pm, Takaka Skatepark: January 14 from 3pm, Brightwater Skatepark: January 17 from 5pm and Richmond Skatepark: January 20 from 3pm. Market links business honours

Doug Clifton, manager of Hunting & Fishing Richmond, encourages people to shop instore and go in the Shop ‘n’ Win draw. The popular competition has been running for the last 10 years and will see one lucky shopper win $5000 cash, while the business that issues the winning entry receives $1000 free advertising. Retailers participating in the competition are easy to identify, simply look for the Shop ‘n’ Win poster in their front window or check out the list of businesses on the back page of this paper. The Shop ‘n’ Win competition will run from December 27 until January 24, 2018, so get shopping and support local businesses. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Charles Anderson One started the Nelson Saturday Market and the other launched his business there – but both have been honoured for their services to business and community. Local peanut butter man Pic Picot and Saturday Market founder Nita Knight were named as part of the New Year’s Honours list and were made Members of the Order of New Zealand. Pic was cited for starting Pic’s Peanut Butter as a one-person, garage-based business in 2007. He started selling his product at the Nelson Market. “The multi-million dollar business now comprises two factories and more than 35 staff and its products are exported internationally,” the citation reads. “He has promoted New Zealand business internationally, conducting product tastings at food shows and expos, speaking at high-profile events, and through a close working relationship with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.” He has provided mentoring to numerous startup business owners in the Nelson/Tasman region as well as nationally, and also sponsored community organisations in Nelson including the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, the Nelson Arts Festival, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson. Nita Knight founded and has operated the Nelson Saturday Market for 39 years since 1978. “She has overseen the market’s development into a community hub and visitor attraction for Nelson and has been an advocate for locally produced goods, art, craft and designers,” the citation reads. “The market has been an incubator for many businesses and products including Pic’s Peanut Butter, Anathoth Jam, Hogarth’s Chocolates, Pete’s Lemonade and Proper Crisps.” She has supported local charities and schools by providing free or reduced-price stands at the market. Such organisations include the Nelson Hospice, Cancer Society, St John’s, the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association, and Young Enterprise Trust.

Local chefs share recipes to help y Salmon and Prawn Parcels by The Vic Brewbar head chef Chris Bayliss

Standing by the barbecue with tongs in one hand and a cold drink in the other as friends and family gather round is quintessential to a kiwi summer. Mouths salivate at the very thought of sizzling fresh local produce so Brittany Spencer spoke with three of the region’s top chefs to give you a bit of know-how to spice up your barbecuing season. BBQ Lamb Cutlets & Fresh Herb Salsa Verde by JellyFish Restaurant and Bar head chef Jason Innes. Some of Nelson's best produce is used in this easy tasty summer recipe for barbecued lamb cutlets with salsa verde, grilled asparagus and cress. Salsa Verde: 1 bunch Italian parsley 1 bunch mint leaves 2 garlic cloves 2 tbsp capers 2 tbsp cornichon pickles 6 anchovy fillets 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp red wine vinegar 125ml extra virgin olive oil Roughly chop the parsley and mint, and place in a large mix-

Mix together with the chopped herbs, then add extra virgin olive oil and mustard. Mix thoroughly adding the red wine vinegar last (this helps maintain the vibrant fresh green colour). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Lamb: 2 lamb racks 1 bunch fresh asparagus 1 lemon 1 bunch watercress pure olive oil or good quality vegetable oil sea salt and cracked black pepper

Heat the BBQ to high. Brush the lamb racks and asparagus with oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook the racks until they are medium (approximately 10 minutes, times will vary depending on BBQ). Remove from heat and rest. While the meat is resting, char grill the asparagus spears. Cut racks along the bone into cutlets and place onto a large serving plate, along with the grilled asparagus. Scatter over the watercress leaves and squeeze over the juice of the lemon. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and serve with the salsa verde. Serves 4

Going all the way? Richmond’s Queen St is now open all the way. You can once again... drive up… or down, stop… or go, park... or leave, shop… or look, drink… or eat. You choose. Over 50 shops and a great mall open 7 days, packed full of interesting stuff and so many cafes and coffee houses they’re worth a visit on their own. All the way down Queen St.

Parcels: 4 salmon steaks 8 prawn cutlets 1 leek (washed and thinly sliced) 4 garlic cloves (peeled and minced) 1 thumb of ginger (peeled and minced) 1 small red chilli (sliced) optional 1 tbsp golden syrup 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sesame seed 4 pinches of flaky sea salt 1 bunch of fresh coriander, basil, or dill 2 limes 2 lemons 1 roll of aluminium foil Tear four squares of aluminium foil, just pull the roll out until the length matches the width. Lay the sliced leek in the centre of the foil squares then top with 1 salmon steak for each parcel, then place two prawn cutlets on top of that. In a mixing bowl, zest and juice

the lime and combine with the golden syrup, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame seeds, and the optional red chilli. Fold the edges of the aluminium foil up into a bowl shape and drizzle 3-4 tbsp over the contents, there should be a fair amount of moisture in the parcel to steam the seafood. Finally crinkle the tops of the foil together to seal the top, don’t pack too tightly as they need space for steam to expand into. The parcels are now ready to be placed on a preheated BBQ plate for approximately 15 minutes, just place them on the top rack of the BBQ to keep them warm. When removing the parcels from the BBQ, be sure to use a spatula underneath to make sure the bottoms don’t tear. To garnish, chop the lemons in half and place flesh side down on the hottest part of the grill to caramelize the sugars and give the lemon a nice colour, and top the parcel with fresh herbs of your choosing and flaky sea salt. Health group urges parents to delay teens’ drinking Judene Edgar Parents are being urged by health promotion agencies to delay their teens’ drinking, and to help them to keep safe and make good decisions. The Public Health Service and Health Action Trust, with input from local parents and support from the Health Promotion Agency, have worked together to develop some tools to help. ‘The Plan’ aims to enable parents to have conversations with their teens to delay drinking and create a family plan together to deal with alcohol. “The project came out after discussions between various health promoters,” says Health Action Trust’s health promoter Rosey Duncan. “Because of the impact on brain development and learning ability, and the risks around sexual health, injury and assault, delaying drinking was identified as a key focal area.” As part of developing The Plan, Rosey says “parents have said that with alcohol available everywhere, it can be a minefield to negotiate with their teens”. Today’s newspaper wrap provides

some of the ideas that have developed alongside parents, as well as a group known as the Innovators who have been finding creative ways to help parents start the conversations, such as interactive games and quizzes. “It’s designed to support the parents to be able to initiate discussions with their teenagers, particularly those in the 13 to 17 age group, so that they can be involved in planning for safety around alcohol,” she says. “It’s those critical discussions that prepare teens for different situations, so they know how to stay safe, or prevent stuff going wrong, and when and how to get help if they do need it.” The wrap also includes legal information about alcohol supply laws, examples of how parents can provide ‘express consent’ if they permit their teen to drink alcohol, a list of essential questions to ask if your teen is planning to attend a party, useful websites and a selection of tasty non-alcoholic cocktail recipes. Parents are invited to sign up to the free e-newsletter to receive more ideas and information from The Plan at http://eepurl.com/b_ MvID.

Discover something new in Kahurangi National Park Jessie Johnston Reporter

Upper Gridiron Hut and Lower Gridiron Shelter are certainly two of DOC’s more interesting accommodations and make the perfect destination for a family day out. The first step is getting yourself to Flora Car Park where you’ll find a

toilet and information kiosk. Roads from Nelson and Motueka meet the Motueka River at Ngatimoti, where a bridge crosses to West Bank Road. The unsealed Graham Valley Road climbs steeply to the car park, although is suitable for most vehicles. Walking at a leisurely pace, it is around two hours to the shelters along an old miners’ track, taking you past Flora Hut and beneath a beautiful beech

forest. The sound of the river is never far away, and the track is well formed with a gentle downward slope on the way in. A quick 50m scramble is required to reach Upper Gridiron, which is located under a solid rock sheet. The hut features three bunks, a sink with running water, an inside woodstove and outside fire pit, complete with swinging bench seat. A long drop toilet can also be found a few metres away from your accommodation. Jump back on the main track, head a few metres onwards and you’ll find the crown jewels, Lower Gridiron Shelter. This is sure to be a hit with the kids as there are plenty of opportunities to climb and explore the unique structure. There’s an open fire and a bench seat at ground level, as well as an open timber platform which sits, once again, under a huge rock overhang, reached by a substantial ladder. While it lacks the usual architectural features of DOC accommodation, namely walls and a door, this shelter still manages to create a homely feel when you enter through the trees and continues to be a delight to visit. The man behind these shelters is Max Polglaze, who worked as a Forest Service ranger in the 1970s and slowly developed the sites over several years. Lower Gridiron was used as a rough shelter and was completed in around 1978, while Upper Gridiron was completed in 1980. So, pack a bag, grab the kids and discover the Gridiron shelters this summer.

Jazzfest lines up for its 27th summer Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The region’s streets and cafes will be alive with the sounds of jazz this summer. The Nelson Jazzfest is an annual four-day festival, running from January 3 to 6, 2018, across a wide range of local venues. The “highlight” of the festival, according to Jazzfest director Paul Gilmour, will be the Founders Park twilight concert on Friday, January 5, with plenty of great music and food on offer. It will feature an impressive lineup of artists, including Wellington City Shake-’Em-On-Downers, Nelson Jazz Club Big Band, Craig Walters Quartet, T-Bone Kate and the Sizzlers, as well as popular local act, the Steve Mitchell Band. Steve Mitchell says that the trio are “absolutely thrilled” to be

Tui is stumping up a total prize pool of $1,150,000 which will be split across all Blackcaps short format matches. The band plays original songs and Steve describes their music as a unique blend of contemporary rock, blues, funk and soul. They are hoping for a big crowd at Founders Heritage Park for the twilight concert and Steve says it should be a fun evening. “We’ll do our best set and hopefully entice one or two other performers up on stage with us to conjure up something special that catches the groove. We want to make sure it is fun - and that’s the spirit of jazz,” he says. There will also be the popular late night jam sessions at East St Cafe, Lady Day at the Playhouse Cafe in Mapua with Jennine Bailey singing Billie Holiday, Django Schmango at the Moutere Inn, as well as a number of free gigs around central Nelson. Keeping the kids busy this summer Keeping the kids amused during the school holidays can seem like a daunting task, especially when you consider the cost of things these days. That’s why we’ve asked local preschool teacher Vanessa Gundry for her advice on what young children love to do, and have put together some ideas for you to try at home this summer. “Children love to make things and they love being involved in real life tasks,” says Vanessa, centre manager and head teacher at Paula’s Preschool. “Even

There’s also plenty happening in the community that the family can get involved in including fairs and markets, the annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic and the upcoming obstacle course event at Tahunanui Beach. Stu says Nelson is more than capable of hosting large-scale concerts, and this will hopefully be the first of many. “If this event is as successful as I believe it will be, we will anchor Out of the Blue on the first Saturday in January each year,” he says. With every event Showcase Nelson stages, it will select a local community group to support, and this time it’s the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust. “I really admire what they’re doing. Stu Allan has always dreamed of bringing a large-scale outdoor music festival to Nelson, and this summer he is finally making it happen. ‘Out of the Blue’ is a one-day event at Trafalgar Park on January 6, 2018, featuring an impressive line-up of some of New Zealand’s very best musical talent. There will be performances from The Eastern, stellar*, Hobnail, Kemptones, The Warratahs, Andrew Fagan and the People, L.A.B, Chicago Smoke Shop, The Harris Brothers and Graeme James. “Each artist has been selected for their sheer talent and ability to perform live,” says Stu. “Everyone can expect some surprises.” Out of the Blue is organised by Stu’s business, Showcase Nelson, and he says the festival has been two to three years in the making. “Ask 100 people what’s missing in Nelson, and I guarantee most aged 25 to 45 will say live music. I've wanted to do this for a long time. I want to light up Nelson and make it feel like a city.” Out of the Blue will be a cash-
