Blackcurrants take centre stage at festival there was something for everybody at the intriguing variety of stalls set up on the playing fields.

“We work really hard at getting a good mix of stalls so hopefully the festival appeals to everyone,” one of the organisers Jenny Leith says. “We are really pleased with crowd, we have good numbers and everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves.”

A photography competition, Moutere history display and live musical entertainment were also popular. The Sarau Festival is a fundraiser for the Moutere community.

Free blackcurrant cupcakes and ice cold Ribena drinks proved irresistible for hundreds of people who lined for the berry nice treats at Sunday’s Sarau Festival at the Moutere Hills Community Centre.

But they weren’t the only attractions at the festival which was held under sunny skies and attracted a big crowd of around 5000.

Simon Bloomberg Nelson’s world famous freestyle mountainbiker Kelly McGarry, who died suddenly while riding in Queenstown on Monday, was like” Superman” to thousands of young children inspiring them to follow their dreams.

The 33-year-old from Wakefield tragically died after suffering a cardiac arrest while biking on the Fernhill Loop track at about 4pm. Two paramedics from Queenstown were flown to the track after reports of a mountainbiker suffering Kelly McGarry. a medical incident, but Kelly died at the scene.

A friend and well-known Nelson mountainbiking identity, Chris Mildon, says “Kelly was incredibly friendly and a wonderful guy who will be sadly missed”.

Although Kelly had been based in Queenstown, Chris says he always made time to come back to Nelson and visit the schools.

Last year, during a visit to Waimea Intermediate, he told the students that they could

“We first met him when he was a teenager thrashing around on his bike on the tracks around Nelson,” Chris says. “He was always a real trailblazer so I wasn’t surprised he went on to become famous.

“But he always made time to visit the schools whenever he came back to Nelson. He was larger than life and a real legend to the kids - he was like Superman to them.”

Kelly, who attended Wakefield School, Waimea Intermediate and Waimea College before pursuing a career as a professional free-rider, backflipped to fame in the Red Bull Rampage in Utah in 2013. The GoPro video of Kelly’s electrifying and now famous backflip over a 21.9m canyon received over 28 million views on YouTube.

also paid their respects on Facebook, with many posting memories of Kelly – also known as Pams – in his younger days in Wakefield.

“Not many people in this world truly reach their potential, but he sure did. Ever since Wakefield school days he didn’t mind having a laugh at his own expense,” wrote one.

Another posted: “What an absolute loss of legend of a person. You were one of the kindest, most genuine people I knew mate, even when you hit the big time Pams, you didn’t change one bit! It was an honour to know you, mate. I still look back at school days and laugh at shit you used to do and say.”

Kelly started riding BMX bikes and was a special guest at a BMX event at last year’s Nelson Bikefest.

Airlines help boost tourism

New tourism figures have backed up what people are noticing on the streets of Nelson - it’s been a big year for the industry.

New figures from Nelson Tasman Tourism show a dramatic 7.7 per cent increase in the number of people staying the night, compared to the previous year-end November statistics - exceeding the national average of 4.8 per cent.

Last month, Waimea Weekly was first to report the dramatic increase of visitors to the region, with Nelson Airport recording a 23 per cent increase in the number of passengers flying in and out of the region, which has been largely fuelled by three new airlines operating to the region.

Lynda Keene, chief executive of Nelson Tasman Tourism, says it’s a “great result” for the region, which has built on the steady growth that they have seen since July last year.

“We’ve had visitors from all countries around the world. We’re really lucky with the Mapua and Kaiteriteri developments, which have also been very busy.”

She says the launch of new airlines Jetstar, Originair and Kiwi Regional Air in 2015 has definitely made an impact on tourist numbers this summer.

Tasman’s Great Taste Cycle Trail has also proved to be a popular summer attraction, with trail counters recording 13,000 users during the 11 day Christmas and New Year period, compared with 9000 for the previous year.

Chair of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust Gillian Wratt says Kaiteriteri is a particularly popular section, with user numbers tripling, compared with this period 12

months ago.

Nicky McBride of Wheelie Fantastic, located at Mapua, says they’ve had a big increase of international cyclists.

“We expect numbers to continue to grow.

It is our fifth season and it is shaping up to be our busiest.”

Tahuna Beach Holiday Park general manager Marcel Fekkes says that they have been “totally chocca,” and it’s the first time in years that they’ve had to turn people away.

“It’s definitely busier than last year,” he says.

“We’ve had an influx of international visitors this year, and a lot more walking traffic too – people have been wandering in asking for sites.”

Motel Association of New Zealand Nelson branch administration officer John Gilbertson says the region’s motels have also been busy during the statutory break, but says it’s too early to tell what the season in total is going to be like.

The Abel Tasman National Park is also proving to be a hot spot, with a surge of both international and kiwi visitors this summer.

Brendan Alborn, owner of Abel Tasman Aqua taxi, says they have been busier than last year, which he puts down to a combination of the New Zealand dollar being weak, better promotion from the tourism sector, and more kiwis out and about doing activities and spending more money.

“It’s been a fantastic season,” he says. “There have just been so many people around. The season started early and has kicked on - it’s

been crazy.”

He says the recent rain hasn’t made any impact on business either. “People tend to either guts the rain out, or pay attention to the forecast,” he says. “After a rainy day we’ll be inundated with people, so it averages out.”

Vic Brew Bar general manager Phil Williams says the bar had an earlier start to the season and that his staff have noticed more overseas tourists this year.

And it seems the good times may not be coming to an end just yet. Lynda says winter is also shaping up to be busy, especially with the arrival of Jetstar’s Nelson to Wellington flights and the return of some events, such as Light Nelson.

Popular bike shop changes hands One of the most popular and long-standing bike shops in the South Island will be changing owners in April when Jim and Sue Matthews hand over Village Cycles in Richmond to well-known Nelson cycling brothers Robin and Andy Reid.

Jim and Sue opened Village Cycles in its first of three of premises next to the BNZ on Queen St in May 1987.

Over the next 28 years, the husband and wife team transformed Village Cycles from a small one-man business into one of the most successful bike shops in the South Island that employs six full-time staff.

Jim, 62, says they were thinking about retiring “eventually” when Robin and Andy expressed an interest in buying the shop. Jim says Robin and Andy are ideally suited to run the business and late last year they sealed a deal to take over on April 1.

“Robin comes into the shop a lot and a couple of years ago he said ‘I’d love to own a bike shop’, so it started from there,” Jim says. “Sue and I knew we were going to sell the shop one day so it worked out perfectly.

“In the early days, I did Saturday mornings on my own and worked Sunday’s as well, repairing bikes and putting new bikes together. It was hard work and some days I’d only take $20 over the counter and I’d wonder how we were going to pay the power bill.

“But we kept working hard and got the shop up-and-running. Now we have five people working on a Saturday and it’s still not enough.”

Jim attributes the shop’s success “to having a great partner” and excellent staff who are all passionate about cycling. He says the shop’s philosophy of putting the customer first and treating them like a fellow cy-

clist has also helped build a loyal following.

“Sue has been the perfect partner and a big part of this shop - she’s been awesome. We’ve also been lucky to have really good staff and that’s been important.”

Jim says one of the things that has given him the “biggest buzz” has been helping young cyclists make their mark. Talented mountainbiker Henry Jaine is the latest in a long list of promising young riders employed by Village Cycles that includes professional free-ride mountainbiker Kelly McGarry, who tragically passed away on Monday, and pro-tour rider George Bennett.

Now Jim says “Sue and I feel we have given the shop our best shot” and it’s time to do some travelling and get on their bikes and do “a lot more riding”.

“It’s good timing for us. The shop is a busy as it’s ever been and Robin and Andy will take the shop to the next level.

We’ll miss the boys heaps and hugely miss the customers. I’d say the majority of them are more friends than customers which I think says something about the shop.”

A coalition of schools and tertiary institutions from Nelson and Marlborough has formed, with the goal of attracting more international students to the region.

A few groups got the opportunity to play with Sir Bob Charles and Susan Farron, and David says next year they will be putting in an invite for Lydia Ko to attend. They also had a very successful auction led by Jeff Rackley with everything being sold, but they will still need to do some more fundraising before heading to Zimbabwe in June.

MAN DIES IN QUAD BIKE CRASH: Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a quad bike on a property in the Brooklyn Valley, near Motueka, on Saturday. The crash occurred about 5.30pm and a 62 year old passenger in the vehicle died.

He was Barry George Gibson. A crash investigation is under way and the death has been referred to the Coroner.

Family fun added to wine and food festival

Organisers of the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival are doing everything they can to make people feel welcome at this year’s event.

Enjoying the region’s craft beers, wine, food and entertainment has always been the heart and soul of the festival, now in its twelfth edition, and organisers say this year offers absolutely no excuse for not being there.

Richmond Rotary’s Kevin Gear says 2016 will see an even stronger focus on making the festival a family day out, with supervised children activities once again being organised by Brightwater School in conjunction with Blast Entertainment.

They will include Noddy Train rides, a bouncy castle, zorb balls and face painting.

People are encouraged to use alternative transport to get to the festival so they can enjoy a wine and beer without having to worry about the journey home. Buses will be running people both to and from the event, or there is the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail which goes right past the festival’s venue, Middle Earth Vineyard. Motor homes are also being well accommodated this

year with people encouraged to park their self-contained vehicles at the vineyard for free on both the Saturday and Sunday nights.

“Knowing that they can stay the night before and the night of the event for free is actually quite a big deal for these motor homes,” says Kevin. “It’s all about making it convenient for people to attend the event and making sure there’s no concerns about getting there, being there, or getting home.”

Richmond priest leaves local parish

Richmond priest Father David Gruschow left the district last weekend, ending a decade of serving the Catholic community in Richmond, Waimea West and Wakefield.

David, who joined the priesthood in 1985 after earlier serving as a Marist brother and teacher, was appointed as priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Richmond early in 2006. Last week, he transferred to the Otaki Levin Parish and, although the move is “part of the being a priest”, he admits that he was sad to leave Nelson.

“When you move you have to be a bit philosophical because it’s what we do as priests - we have to go where there is a need,” he says.

“But it’s still sad to leave because I’ve been here 10 years and made a lot of friends.

“I also think it also gets harder to move as you get older. It’s more difficult to get out of your comfort zone.”

David says he has enjoyed working in the community in a variety of roles since he moved to Richmond following six years in Petone. In addition to serving the congregation in Richmond, Wakefield and Waimea West,

“I was an army padre for seven or so years so the RSA asked me if I’d look after them when I moved here. I served in Bosnia after the civil war and also Germany and Bougainville.

“I was in Bosnia with the UN peacekeeping force when they had the Srebrenica massacre. The Dutch soldiers who were there after the massacre were evacuated to our camp, so it was very horrific for them.”

David also has a background in teaching and taught science at Nayland College and Waimea

College for a few years after he arrived in Nelson. He says that gave him an opportunity to be involved with another part of the community.”

“When I started teaching at Nayland, the principal Charles Newton said to all the new teachers that we had to be careful what we said because everyone knows

everyone else, and he was right.

There are a lot of connections between people and that’s one of the best things about Nelson - it was also a useful tool pastorally because it helped me understand the people I worked with.”

David says one of the biggest challenges he faced in Nelson was finding the time to look after a congregation of 350 to 400 and a parish roll in excess of 1000. Although preparing and delivering sermons has been a big part of the job, he also spent a lot of time travelling from Richmond to Tapawera and Takaka, officiating at weddings and funerals and helping people during the difficult times of their lives.

“When I first arrived I would have about 20 weddings a year and now I only have half a dozen.

I think that’s because fewer couples are getting married and also because it can be very costly.

“It’s interesting though that some of the best weddings I’ve attended have been the pot-luck dinner BYO ones. It’s more about the warmth of the relationship than the money.”

David’s replacement is former Nelson Bays rugby player Seph Pijfers.

Vintage machines roar back to life With a bang and a roar the vintage machinery show got underway at Higgins Heritage Park on Saturday.

Run over the weekend and organised by the Vintage Engine and Machinery Club, the annual show is an opportunity for club members to share their passion for historical machinery.

The public had free reign of the park, where there were a num-

ber of stationery engine and tractor displays, a demonstration of hand-fed hay baling, chaff cutting and sawmilling, while other clubs opened the doors to their collections, too.

As well as offering people the chance to walk through history, the club also uses the day to raise funds for facility improvements within the heritage park.

Stoke flower show attracts 300 entries The Nelson Horticultural Society flower show made a colourful addition to Stoke Community Hall on Saturday.

The society holds three shows each year, one in summer and two in spring, this year's summer show featuring just over 300 entries.

Sections included dahlias, gladioli, roses, cut flowers, decorative, pot plants and vegetables, with Arch Crerar taking the title for Champion Dahlia, Alistair Reay

winning Champion Gladioli and Joan Dunbar growing the Champion Rose.

Over 1000 people in more than 500 campervans attended this year’s Music in the Mountains Rally based at Tapawera Area School during the long weekend.

The annual campervan rally was so popular it overflowed into the adjacent community grounds, taking up four rugby fields. The rally’s big attraction was a Saturday night concert by country singer Suzanne Prentice and her All Star Band.

The rally has increased in popularity each year, after just 100 campervans pulled into Tapawera for the first edition in 2007.

Weeds around streams: I am a recent Brook St resident using the Willow walkway for frequent excursions to town and have been horrified at rampant weed growth in the stream adjacent to the Bronte St foot bridge, willow seedlings establishing quickly and other weeds forming a mat from bank to bank. Another area is the new footpath island on the corner of Brook and Bronte St east that has not been planted and is now an eyesore of metre high weeds. This is a lovely area to live in, but can quickly depress if the basic maintenance is not addressed regularly. Glenda Poole.

It has been interesting to read the comments regarding the state of local streams. We have complained about the noxious weeds on the banks of the Poorman's Stream for months and the only action taken is to slash at the fennel, which is left to rot.

It is an absolute disgrace, unsightly and a health hazard. A phone call to the council does not achieve anything. We have lived in this area for over a year and the grass is seldom cut in a nearby reserve and trees and shrubs are hardly ever trimmed. The council's aim to achieve clean streams and habitats is a pipe dream unless planning and action occurs. G. Yep, fully agree on this. It's all who you know in Nelson. I had over eight years experience including my LCQ and being able to make coffee and supervisory experience. Only one place would pay me over minimum wage, because apparently I didn't have enough experience. Yet when the manager's friends came back from university they all got jobs there and were complaining about their pay - which was $1 per hour more than I was on. They would stand around gossiping yet my hours were cut so they could get more.

I ended up leaving when at my pay review they offered me an extra 10 cents per hour.

Jetstar extends its service to Wellington Jetstar flights from Nelson to Auckland have been a huge success and the low-cost airline is hoping for more of the same from its Nelson to Wellington service that flew for the first time on Monday.

Overall passenger numbers through Nelson Airport rose 18 per cent in December compared with the same month the previous year, with traffic on the NelsonAuckland route jumping 33 per cent.

David Hall, Jetstar CEO Australia and New Zealand, says passenger loads on the new regional services were above 90 per cent in December and January.

“This year we’ll have over 600,000 seats on sale across our New Zealand regional network providing more opportunities for more Kiwis to fly more often for less.

Astronomer discovers massive supernova Kate Russell An amateur astronomer from Nelson has played a key role in discovering what could be the “most luminous” supernova ever detected – all from his own observatory, tucked away in the backyard of his Washington Valley property.

Brent Nicholls has been working with a group of professional astronomers from Ohio State University, who run the ASASSN project (All Sky Automated Survey for Supernova), to find the rare exploded star which, at its brightest, was 570 billion times bright than the sun.

The keen astronomer says he’s only had his own observatory for the past four or five years, with his 30cm telescope on loan from a friend in Canterbury, but it’s been his main hobby for the past three decades.

Brent says the ASASSN group, who are mostly located in the northern hemisphere, observe the sky every night, looking for transient objects. He is only the Kiwi to belong to the group.

“When new objects are picked up, an alert is sent out to half a dozen of us who follow it up, getting more detailed pictures,” he says. “If there’s something there we pick it up straight away and it goes onto what’s called the ‘astronomers’ telegram,’ which is where all the discoveries go.”

Brent was the first to get confirmation of this particular object, which was first observed last June. The supernova is almost four billion light years from Earth and will be able to be seen for another year or so with the humble telescope before it fizzles out.

“We think it’s a very big star that’s come to the end of its life and collapsed, and as it has collapsed it’s formed a neutron star in the middle,” he says. “It continues to collapse, but the material has bounced off

and that’s ripped the rest apart and that’s the light we see.”

Brent, who has had been part of the ASASSN team for the past 18 months, says they found 179 supernova last year alone.

The group is planning to use the Hubble Space Telescope later this year to get a closer look at the supernova’s host galaxy for clues to what triggered the blast.

The discovery will also feature in an article written for Science magazine.

Romance writers hope to get Nelson hearts fluttering Swedish, her mother tongue.

"We are a mix of really lovely and talented people, we have such fun at our meetings, as the chairperson and convener I sometimes have to say 'come on girls, stop giggling.' We have had meetings when my husband is home and he can't help hear things, and he comes out when all the girls are gone and says, almost blushing, 'I can't believe this, do you women really talk about these things?'"

While romance writing is the nuts and bolts of the group, creating pure Mills & Boon-style literature is by no means a requirement, any stories involving relationships can benefit from

some with a Nelson twist and all of them showcasing a variety of romance writing styles.

Created in 2002, the group is a chapter of Romance Writers of New Zealand, and currently involves 18 local members, 12 of whom contributed to the book.

"I've only been in it a couple of years, I've always loved writing and [a colleague was talking about] how much fun she was having in the group, so I asked 'can I come' and she said 'most definitely'," says Heather Holmes. Annika joined the chapter around 10 years ago after she wished to learn to write her stories in English as well as

Race day starts around 10am with practice and qualifying runs, allowing drivers the chance to familiarise themselves with the track and how their car performs on it. Then the real action will kick off at 12pm.

Those chasing points will be positioned on a ladder according to their performance in the qualifying passes.

From noon until 4:30pm they will be whittled down until a winner is determined for each class.

While drag racing offers the opportunity to get up Andy Irwin-Wells in action at close and per- national series. sonal with the action on the tarmac, an added bonus is their open-door policy in the pit area, allowing people to walk around the competing cars as they’re being worked on by the race crews, or even have a word to the drivers about their cars and the world of drag racing.

dragsters, street cars, muscle cars, door cars and full drag cars, offering plenty of action for any petrol head.

There will be Eftpos available at the gates on the day and a selection of food and drink will also be available for purchase. John reminds spectators that it is normally a very last year’s NDRA round of the hot day out on the airfield so people need to look after themselves by bringing a wide brim hat and plenty of sunscreen. When the excitement of the day is over, feel free to join the drivers and supporters at Armadillos Bar and Restaurant on Richmond’s Queen St for the prize giving and after race function. If the weather is unsuitable on the day, racing will be postponed until Sunday, February 7.

Equestrian riders sign off summer competition in style Local equestrians are now looking forward to their winter series, beginning in April, after Nelson Dressage held its final tournament of the summer season.

North Island judge Toni Williams and Marlborough judge Tracey Johnson joined forces with Nelson’s top two judges, Myra Friend and Suzanne Inglis, for two days of competition at Rough Island Equestrian Park. Held over the weekend of January 16 and 17, riders put their horses through various dressage tests as they vied for the championship titles.

In level one, Isabella Ladley on Solitaire Jade took out the pony title, closely followed by Jessica Stock and Naya Cook, while Anna Gale on Lasting Impression led all the way in the level 1 horse classes, taking out the title.

Level two pony champion was Meila Picard on Buckton Denniston, who also took home the trophy for the highest scoring pony.

Kerry Goldthorpe competed in his first graded competition and finished up taking reserve, and Amy Nicholls on Sanderson took the horse title.

Melissa Galloway on Windermere J Obei W dominated in Level three, winning all four classes and taking

the championship win, with Diane Wallace on Profile receiving the reserve.

Melissa also took out the Level four championship on Windermere Johanson W with Louis Schindler on Schindlers Liszt battling out for reserve with only half a point between him and Anna Gale on Walk the Line.

It was Sarah Wadworth on Faemoss BW who led all the way in Level 6 /7 to win over Anna Gale on Caithness Classical. Sarah also walked away with the Aztec trophy for the highest percentage overall in the musical freestyles with 71.67% and the Pamela Reid trophy for the most points.

Diane Wallace on Caithness Masquerade took the level 8/9 title ahead of Tracey Johnson on Apollo 4. The competition was also the conclusion to the hotly contested young rider series sponsored by Richmond Saddlery. Monica Lewis and GB Donner Benelli took out the Champion Young Rider title, with Kerry Goldthorpe and Hunter Valley winning reserve.

Schools are back…

School is back and that means there will be more children out and about, especially in the mornings and afternoon. The basic message around schools is: slow down and look out for kids. In many places around Nelson electronic variable school speed limit signs will be turned back on. Reducing your speed to 40km/h provides for a much increased reaction time for a driver, meaning you can identify potential hazards and react much more quickly.

Pedestrian crossings are places where pedestrians should be able to cross the road in safety. Drivers need to slow down as they approach them and be prepared to stop. Students and families need to remember to use the correct place to safely cross the road outside the school.

So be extra careful around schools and watch out for kids!

20 km/h past a stationary school bus Remember – the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus when children are getting on and off is 20 km per hour. This speed limit applies no matter which direction you are travelling in.

Drivers –

school bus incidents can happen on both high and low speed roads. However, the faster your vehicle is travelling, the more likely it is that a child will be killed if they are hit.

Parents – when dropping off or collecting

your child from the school bus, try to do it so that you are on the same side as the bus. This will cut out the need for your child to cross the road. Park your car well away from the bus stop or other children so you don’t block drivers, children’s or the bus driver’s visibility. Get out of your car and meet your child or walk with them to the designated bus stop.

Richmond touch player to make NZ debut

Ben Anderson’s taste of top level basketball may have helped propel him into the New Zealand mixed touch team.

The recently-graduated Nelson College student was last week selected to debut for the New Zealand open mixed touch team to take on Australia in April.

The selection is the latest in a string of sporting successes for the 18-year-old.

Last year, he made the Nelson Giants basketball squad and ended the season with six minutes of court time, as well as making the New Zealand under-17 and under-21 touch teams.

He says it’s been a “crazy” 18 months.

“If you had told me a year and a half ago that I would have made these teams… I’d be so stoked,” he says.

Ben says his father Wayne – a

fellow NZ touch representative – has been a huge influence on him as a touch player and helped train him over the years.

When Ben was told that he’d been selected at the training camp, he says he wanted to let his dad know, but he had no credit on his phone.

“I had to wait until I got to the airport where there was free wifi and send him a message on Facebook. He was pretty happy.”

Ben is heading to Christchurch next week to begin university studies, where he will train to become an engineer.

He hopes to play for the Canterbury Rams in the National Basketball League and carry on with his touch training. “I love both sports, if I had to choose one I couldn’t, and thankfully they haven’t crossed over too much so I can do both.”

Local riders on fire in Top Gun Simon Bloomberg

Nelson riders showed plenty of speed on their hometown tracks with Henry Jaine, Reuben Olorenshaw and Ingrid Richter winning their elite races and Sam Todd taking out an open men’s race at the Top Gun event held over the long weekend.

Henry recorded the only sub-one hour time to win Sunday’s cross-country race around the Codgers Mountainbike Park, the day after Reuben won the downhill on the Kaka course in a fast 2min 55.32sec. Ingrid was the fastest women in the cross-country winning in 1hr 19min 29.77sec, while Sam won the open men’s downhill in 3min 3.07sec.

Henry’s win ended a frustrating run of second-placings in under-23 races in the Mountainbike New Zealand Cup cross country series. The promising Richmond rider was too quick on Sunday winning in 58min 47.6sec, six minutes clear of second-placed Warren Burgess.

Sam’s result was a continuation of his top form this season following a win and second-placing in the Mountainbike New Zealand Cup series. The 19-year-old Teapot Valley rider is on target to win his second consecutive open men’s downhill title and graduate to pro-elite class next year.

“Last year was my first year as a senior and I didn’t have any great results but I was the most consistent overall so I won the series,” Sam says. “This year, I won in Auckland and then finished

‘Jet’ wins twice at regatta week

Richard Borrell topped off a spectacular few days of sailing – winning the Juliet division of the Nelson Weekly Regatta just days after claiming the Wellington to Nelson race honours.

Richard’s yacht Jet beat 14 other boats in the Juliet division of the regatta, while Oldsmobile, now owned by a Marlborough family,

won the Romeo division. The regatta wrapped up last Wednesday and Tasman Bay Cruising Club commodore, Kevin Skelton, says it was a success. “It was perfect weekend, great sailing and weather.”

The Nelson Weekly Regatta included a trailer yacht class for the first time, as well as the keel boat racing in Tasman Bay.

Any excitement about being picked for the region’s top women’s football team may not last long, as coach Ryan Stewart prepares to put them into a world of hurt.

The Tasman United women’s football team was, late last year, granted entry into the Mainland Women Premier League, featuring the top club teams from Christchurch. In December, Ryan was selected as coach and he quickly began the process of picking his squad.

With trials and selection now out the way, the Irishman is now preparing to get his team fit – really fit.

“I’ve already given them a wee taste of it and many of them didn’t like it, but that’s what it takes at this level. Fitness is something we’re going to work really hard on. The game speed is a lot quicker down there and they’ve got to be able to keep up with it. The standard of the trials has been excellent, so we just need to get down to work now and look forward to the first game.”

Coast to Coast entrant SPORT Briefs off to a winning start

TRIATHLON: Hayden Squance finished 10th in the Sovereign Tri Series junior sprint triathlon in Wellington on Saturday finishing in 56min 40sec. Jon Linyard was 20th overall and second in his M4044 age group in the standard distance race in 2hr 7min 10sec while Caroline Squance was second in her F50-54 age group in 2hr 37min 47sec.

Simon Bloomberg Lachlan Brownlie won’t be lining up in the Coast to Coast Longest Day until next Saturday, but the former Waimea College student is already a winner after entering an on-line competition run by one of the race sponsors.

Giant bikes challenged Coast to Coast competitors to post their most creative training secret online through social media with the winner receiving a Giant road bike and accessories and a free entry to the Coast to Coast.

Lachlan’s “humorous and creative” entry won the competition allowing the 19-year-old student to compete in the race on a shoe-string budget and a new, lightweight carbon bike.

The winning image showed Lachlan, who is studying to be an outdoor education instructor at Tai Poutini Polytechnic in Greymouth, paddling his race kayak in a water fountain outside the Grey District Council offices in the middle of the night. Lachlan says he wanted to do something different so that it stood out and the judges liked the end result saying in their decision that they liked the photo’s “originality and creativity” which demonstrated “Lachlan’s motivation to train for the event in a unique way”.

“I wanted to make it different and funny so a mate and I went into Greymouth and put the kayak in the fountain and he took the photo,” Lachlan says.

“The fountain is right outside the council offices so we thought we’d better do it in the middle of the night just in case someone tried to stop us.”

Tasman Resource Management Plan Proposed Plan Change 60 Rural Land Use And Subdivision Policy Review

Request for Information Arboricultural Maintenance Services within Tasman District.

Water restrictions

The Council has prepared amendments to the Tasman Resource Management Plan, known as Proposed Plan Change 60: Rural Land Use and Subdivision Policy Review.

This Plan Change reviews and updates the policy and rules for rural land use and subdivision.

The proposed amendments ensure greater protection of productive capacity, allow for flexibility of use and maintain rural character – while offering greater choices for landowners.

Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of any of the proposed Change. Submissions can be sent to the Environmental Policy Manager, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by the Council until 4.00 pm on Monday 14 March 2016.

Submission forms are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”.

Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address.

Consideration of Proposed Amendments After submissions have closed, the Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support of or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to the Council. The Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court.

Availability of Proposed Amendments The proposed amendments are available to view at the Council’s Richmond office; Motueka, Takaka and Murchison service centres; Richmond, Motueka and Takaka libraries; or online at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/trmp-proposed-changes. Submission forms are also available.
