Three people could easily have been killed in a crash on the Coastal Highway on Friday when a truck and trailer lost control after swerving to avoid a head-on collision and careering towards on-coming traffic on a blind corner. Instead everyone walked away after the truck driver “did a magnificent job” and the two car drivers reacted quickly, taking evasive action to miraculously miss the the truck and its trailer which flipped and skidded across the road. The truck driver was shaken after the crash but the only casualty was a trailer load of apples which was strewn across the Coastal Highway near the Pukeko Lane intersection. “We could have easily had two people dead in one car and another dead in the other car,” senior constable Alfred Blair, who attended the crash, says. “The truck driver did a magnificent job to avoid a head-on and the two drivers did well, too. “There was a couple in the first car and the partner yelled ‘floor it’ to the driver and they just accelerated out of the way. The second car went up the bank to miss the truck and trailer so everyone was very lucky.”

Rescue helicopter gets a boost Children, dressed as minihelicopters, buzzed around the hangar while real live choppers whirred through the skies at the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Open Day on Sunday. The annual open day drew a crowd of around 3000

people and Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust’s general manager Paula Muddle couldn’t be happier. “It was a great day, everyone enjoyed our winch display,” Paula says. “The costume competition was insane and a lot of

people took the opportunity to come up to our crew and personally thank them, which was really good to see.” The day acted as a showcase for the region’s emergency services while also being a fund-raiser for the trust.

“The Marlborough Ulysses Club rode over to present us with a $1000 cheque and we raised $4000,” Paula says. “But for us, the day is about opening our doors and reminding people that we are here in the community for them.”

Truck driver Gerard Bruning says he’s “just thankful everyone is safe” after the three-way near miss. “I’m so glad no one was injured. Someone must have been looking after us.” Gerard, who drives for Thomas Brothers, says he swerved to avoid an on-coming truck that had allegedly crossed the centre line to drive around a tractor mowing the roadside grass. “I thought it was going to be all over, I really did. I knew the trailer had gone and I felt the truck going too and I thought this is it. “The wheels were at least a metre off the ground, but it came down and then there was a whole heap of traffic in front of me. There was a vehicle that shot of up the bank - he was lucky because I was across the

road. “When I came to a stop, I got out to make sure everyone was alright and then I got back in the truck and dragged the trailer off the road. It was unbelievable - it could have been a whole pile up.” The driver of the second car, Tom Broderick says Gerard “did everything right” to avoid a head-on collision with the oncoming truck. “He couldn’t go anywhere else,” Tom says. “He wasn’t going fast and did really well to get out of the way but his truck hit the bank and the wheels lifted up and the trailer tipped over. “The truck veered out towards us and I knew I had to get off the road so I shot up the bank. Everyone was so lucky.” The Coastal Highway was closed to one lane and police diverted traffic onto the Moutere Highway while the road was cleared.

This is expected to be completed in March 2018. Kyle says there are already two well-known food retailers in the process of securing two of the three retail spaces, although they cannot be named at this stage.

Flat helps single mums’ housing crisis Simon Bloomberg A Richmond community support group that helps mothers and young families has partnered with the owners of an early education centre to start a new flat for single mothers who can’t find accommodation during the housing crisis. Ma’s Place was set up at a Cautley St residence early last year by a group of “passionate people” to help support mothers and their young families. There has been a huge demand for the free services provided by Ma’s Place and now one of the group’s members, Carol Marshall, has helped set-up a flat for single mums who can’t find accommodation. “A lot of families are struggling with the housing crisis - especially single mums,” Carol says. “There aren’t a lot of options for these families and it’s very stressful, so we thought we’d try and help. “We’ve been using Ma’s Place as emergency accommodation for mothers and their young families, and we even had one dad, but we needed something more permanent. It’s very hard supporting a young family when you are a single mum and it’s often difficult finding affordable accommodation so we decided to

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. see if we could help.” Carol says she approached Richmond early education centre owners Anthony and Stacey Holder about the possibility of using a property they were planning to sell. She says the house is “perfect” for young families because Anthony and Stacey had been using it for their under-two childcare centre Paula’s Tiny Tots. Anthony and Stacey agreed to the proposal and soon after they relocated Paula’s Tiny Tots to

their Paula’s Preschool premises on Waverley St in January new mothers and their babies moved into the flat. Carol says the four bedroom flat has been busy since it opened in March with up to four mothers and their children staying at any one time. “Paula’s Preschool has always been very supportive of Ma’s Place, so when we heard they were selling the house we contacted Anthony. He was very happy to make it a mums’ flat and did

a few renovations for us and then we moved in there in March - it’s a work in progress but it’s going very well.” Carol says the flat’s rental is affordable and fixed so the mums know exactly what they have to pay each week. All the mums in the flat do their own cooking and cleaning and also support each other “during difficult times”. Anthony says they were happy to rent their house as a mums’ flat because they wanted to “support

people in the community” and also have such a good relationship with Ma’s Place and Carol. “I see it as a win-win,” Anthony says. “The building is still getting used and it’s providing a service for the community and support for people that Carol helps.” New mum Marie Hill says the flat has been a saviour because she had nowhere to go after her partner left her when she was six weeks pregnant. “I stayed at Ma’s Place for seven months and tried for ages to find permanent accommodation but couldn’t find anything. Some of the agencies and private landlords wouldn’t even look at me - they said ‘sorry we don’t take single mothers’ “The mums’ flat is perfect for us. You get your independence and it’s affordable.” Carol says Anthony and Stacey’s decision to rent their property as a single mums flat instead of selling it is “very communityminded and a creative way of alleviating the impact of housing shortages on young families. She wants to encourage other landlords and community groups to consider young families’ needs, and would like to hear from anyone who can help with housing. Brass band hits the right notes Simon Bloomberg The Nelson City Brass Band is in line for a promotion after successfully defending its C Grade title at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships in Wellington. The band convincingly won the Hymn, Set Test and Own Choice Test sections, to win the C Grade aggregate by 12.5 points at the April 22 competition. It is the second consecutive year the band has won the title and now band secretary and baritone player Wayne Jennens says they’ll almost certainly be invited to step up to the B grade competition next year. “Last year we won and got invited to go up to B grade but we declined because we wanted another year to consolidate and try and show it wasn’t a fluke,” Wayne says. “Now we know it wasn’t a fluke so there’s a very good possibility that we’ll go up a grade.” Wayne says that defending their title was harder than winning last year because there was so much more expectation from everyone. Although the players hit the right notes in Wellington, Wayne says the band’s musical director Nigel Weeks was also instrumental in the win. The Nayland College music teacher “got the music out of the music” as he conducted the 30-player band. Wayne says the band also secured some individual honours with Logan Ford winning the Junior Cornet solo and Zane Maxwell finishing fourth in the Open Euphonium solo. The band already has Nigel, Steve and Alice Rudhall and John McGough in the National Band of New Zealand which is heading to the Netherlands for the world championships in July. Wayne says the only sad note was that its oldest member, 97-year-old Maurice Abrahams, was unable to attend the championships “for the first time in ages”. At the other end of the scale, Jake McNaughton and Natania Ngawhau, both 15, performed well. Nelsonians have a chance to listen to the champion band when they play their annual Mother’s Day concert at the Annesbrook Church on Saxton Rd on Sunday May 14. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 each for groups of 10 or more with all proceeds going towards the “not inexpensive” costs of running the band. “We need to pay for the purchase and maintenance of instruments and that’s not inexpensive,” Wayne says.

Churches come together to provide community course Brittany Spencer Six of the region’s churches are coming together to provide a free course to the community. Alpha, a course spearheaded by Bear Grylls, is a brand-new series filmed around the world that gives locals the chance to ask questions and explore the basics of the Christian faith. Unite Church, All Saints Nelson, Victory Community Anglican Church, St Stephens Community Church, St Barnabus Anglican Church, and the Holy Trinity Anglican Church are all joining together to run the eleven week course. All Saints vicar Simon Martin says it is really great to see the churches working together. “While we celebrate different cultures and different ways of being christians and doing church, this is a way of saying actually our foundations are the same and we can work together.” For anyone who has questions about faith and life, with or without a church background, Alpha looks at things like: is God real? Why do bad things happen? Does God heal? What is the point of life? St Stephens pastor Nathaniel Peterson says everyone has questions, even if they don’t realise it.

“Alpha is about inviting people to come on a walk through our world view, let's ask questions, let's talk about it, I want to know where you stand on things and what questions you have.” Kicking off with taster sessions at the start of May, Alpha is designed around a dinner, dvd, and discussion format, and will be running at different churches almost every day of the week. Victory Community Anglican Church vicar Greg Holmes says, while life isn’t always easy, he is looking forward to answering questions and having conversations about how we don’t have to do life on our own. “Life is a great adventure and parts of that adventure are flipping scary, it can be a white knuckle ride sometimes but you don’t have to do it alone, that's what church is for - to do hard life together.” Unite Church’s Jenni Ball says there is no obligation and people can walk away at any point. “It’s quite a relaxed approach, we don’t do a follow up, there is no obligation, you can stop coming anytime you want and people are more than welcome to come along to the first taster night and see if it’s something they want to keep coming to, it's totally up to them.” For more information or to find a course near you, visit alpha.org.nz

Warm giveaway for community groups and clubs Jessie Johnston

Straight off the back of their Wholesale Wish promotion earlier this year which saw 60 landscaping wishes granted, Wholesale Landscapes is teaming up with Azwood Energy for another giveaway. The two companies are donating four pallets of boxed, kiln-dried firewood blocks to four worthy causes. Each pallet contains 60 boxes of Azwood dry firewood blocks which would normally retail for

around $10 per box. “We sell kiln-dried wood blocks from $14 a load, all year round.,” Wholesale Landscapes’ Tom Filmer says. “They’re one of our most popular products, people literally line up to get them when it starts to get cold because they burn with quite a high heat. “We had these pallets sitting out the back and we thought, we could sell them, or we could give them away and community organisations could have a chance to do some fund-raising coming

into winter, and hopefully make something to help fund their endeavours.” Four winners will be chosen when the promotion ends on May 15, with each receiving a pallet of 60 boxes that the team will then deliver. To enter into the promotion, simply visit either businesses Facebook page and explain to them why the community group or cause deserves a pallet, or phone Wholesale Landscapes on 547 5300, or Azwood Energy on 547 4836.

Cars roll in to Founders Around 200 vehicles of all shapes and sizes were sprawled across the grounds at Founders Heritage Park for the Nelson Tasman Hospice Vehicle Display on Sunday. Everything was out on show, from muscle cars, motorbikes, and a Ferrari supplied by Houston Motors, to a Reliant Robin and a six-wheel argo. Featuring vehicles from Blenheim to Takaka, the display, which was a fund-raiser for the Nelson Tasman Hospice, drew a crowd of more than 750 people. Among the vehicles was a bright orange 1970 Pontiac LeMans, restored from the chassis up, by local mechanic Spot Christoffersen and his daughter Lee. Spot started restoring the car in 2005, and after a year away working in Antartica, he finished it in 2011. Event organiser and Nelson Tasman Hospice volunteer Dave Ferry says they had so many people like Spot and Lee that were really passionate about their vehicles. The event raised just over $5000 for the hospice.

I arrived at the scene some time after the accident, but hats off to everyone involved for the way they handled what could have been a very bad accident. Police and helpers were all amazing, thank you. Linda Hong Poor local drivers It is of some concern that I note there has been an increase in poor driving habits by some locals. I wonder if the police could comment via your excellent paper, as it does appear that they may not be giving this aspect of local traffic enough attention? u-turn, which will undoubtedly change his life forever. He will live with this guilt for the rest of his life. My mum died in a car accident caused by another driver when I was 6. Although growing up was difficult, I couldn’t help but think about the man who hit her that day, wondering how he managed to wake up everyday knowing he killed a mother and child. I don’t hate him for what happened, accidents are a freak of nature. It could happen to anyone of us. I honestly feel so sorry for Mr Wolnak and also the families involved. He’s not a bad person, he just made a uncalculated risk and, with him not being familiar with NZ roads, just makes this story so much sadder. Carmyn Hunt. My father was killed on Pea viner Corner. I’m now friends with the man who hit him. I think it was an accident, he didn’t go out to kill someone. I cannot, like yourself carry hatred for someone, when it was an accident. Jasmine Grew. I think the families of the deceased should’ve gotten a lot more. Especially the young family, my heart breaks for them. Takes a quick Google to see how much he likely gets paid, and this fine is nothing to him. I bet he would want to give more as it is a terrible tragedy for the driver too, but those young boys who lost their dad just sucks. Maybe a year of his pay $500,000 would be better. Why be so lenient? They have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Juanita Donnelly.

Intersection upgrade key to Kohatu Park Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Supporters of the proposed Kohatu Park Motorsport and Adventure Park believe the Tasman District Council’s decision to approve $300,000 for road works at the entrance of the park will be the catalyst to get the project back on track. The 203-hectare site is located near Tapawera and is being planned by private investors for motorsports groups around the top of the South Island. Upgrading the intersection is one of the conditions of the resource consent for the park and trust member Dugald Ley says they are delighted with council’s decision to fund the work. “Council put the funding for the intersection upgrade in there specifically as a signal that they supported Kohatu Park but then it dropped off their radar,” Dugald says. “The upgrade was critical for us, so, now it’s going ahead we’re hoping it will be the catalyst to get things going

again.” Dugald says the intersection upgrade is critical because the resource consent stated that it had to be completed before the park could admit paying public to events. He says the park has been used successfully for open days and practises and the trust is now looking forward to staging “full events” at the park.

An aerial shot and outline of Kohatu Park near Tapawera. Council is finalising the land purchase required for the works at the junction of Olivers Rd and the Motueka Valley Highway and plans to start construction in August. Dugald says the trust is op-

timistic that the intersection upgrade will encourage potential investors to support the project. He says they have been approaching a number of people around the top of the South Island for support and hope they will be encouraged by the latest development. “Once supporters see something happening then the funding will come in. The intersection upgrade could be a turning point.” Dugald says the trust has already secured some funding but still needed a lot more before the park could be fully developed. He concedes that the trust’s initial plans for a $26million development, including a 3.5km race track and a drag strip, were “fairly ambitious” and they are now “more realistic about what we can achieve in the short term”. “We might have to aim for something that’s more modest for a start. We can do anything that only requires moving a piece of dirt around - that’s easy - but a sealed race track track will have to wait.”

Kit Maling, middle, with Waimea Village residents, from left, Kevin Seyb, Marian Cringle, Jerry Rowland, John Hewison, Monty Walker and Rex Page at Kit’s farewell late last month.

Waimea Village farewells Kit Maling Waimea Village farewelled the man that helped reclaim their homes for them. Tasman district councillor Kit Maling is stepping down from his role as caretaker and manager at Waimea Village after buying the village and selling it back to the residents in 2014. Kit played a key role in the deal following a long and bitter dispute

between residents and former owners Michael and Carolyn Wright over excessive increases in their annual fees. Kit was farewelled at a gathering within the village late last month, with a large group of residents there to share one last glass of whisky and reflect on progress. Waimea Village chairman Mon-

ty Walker says he is sad to see Kit go and is grateful for all his help “He’s done a great job for the village, he’s a good man. Being a councillor as well, just made it a bit too much work but Kit’s got a good replacement, Glyn Cunningham, and he’s already doing a good job.” Kit says while he is sad to go, he

is happy leaving the village better off than when he first got involved. “Most of the residents are shareholders of the village now, the house prices have gone through the roof and the debt is paid off. It’s a fantastic community here, they do a lot together and it’s been great helping them through everything.”

A large-scale military exercise will see more than 2000 military personnel from 16 countries descend on the Top of the South later in the year. The New Zealand Defence Force is planning the exercise, Southern Katipo, for the end of October around the Marlborough, Kaikoura, Tasman, Nelson and Buller regions. It is New Zealand’s largest military exercise and is held every two years in different parts of the country. There will be groups of personnel participating from Australia, Canada, the United States, France and Britain. Soldiers from Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Brunei, Malaysia and Timor Leste will also be taking an active part in the exercise. In the scenario, which is a continuation from the 2015 exercise held in Buller, Tasman and Marlborough districts, a fictitious South West Pacific island is separated into two nations called Becara and Alpira. Becara is still suffering from political instability and unrest. New Zealand has been requested to assemble and lead an Intervention Force comprising a coalition of Pacific Island Forum Member States. The public will have the opportunity to see some of the activities.

Nelson Vintage Car Club The Nelson Vintage Car Club will mark a significant milestone when they officially open their new clubrooms at the Top of the South Speedway on Lower Queen St on Sunday May 14. And to celebrate the big occasion, they are inviting the public to come along to an open day and see some of the region’s coolest old cars which will be on display. There will also be cars and motorcycles from many of the region’s 27 motoring clubs which have been invited to join the celebrations. “It’s a big change for the club so we thought we’d invite everyone along to an open day,” Nelson Vintage Car Club Chairman Jim Wareing says. “It’s not a fund-raiser -it’s free and a chance for people to find out about our club and see some of our members’ cars and watch some fun events.” Jim says the club decided to move from its original clubrooms at Founders Park in Nelson because “it was complex with the Nelson City Council trying to run events and us trying to run our own”. The club spent a year looking for a new venue before one of their members, Lloyd Ewing, suggested they could purchase the vacant Speedway Association Clubrooms on Lower Queen St. “The speedway guys built a lovely new place and they were going to demolish their old clubrooms,” Jim says. “But Lloyd, who is also a member of the Speedway Association, said ‘hang about, the Vintage Car Club might want the building’ so he was the link and a deal was done.” They purchased the old clubrooms in February 2014 and last week put the finishing touches to a major renovation project that’s taken hundreds of hours of volunteer labour and a $40,000 grant from Pub Charities to complete. They installed a new kitchen and toilets, replaced the ceiling, repaired a leaky roof and painted the whole building. Not only did the club renovate the building,

15

Celebrating new clubrooms at Top of the South Speedway

they added to it, constructing a new shed for their tractor and mowing gear which they use to maintain the grounds as part of their rent agreement with the Speedway Association. But there’s no question the end result has been well worth the effort with Jim saying “this is home now and long may that last.” The club will be open to the public from 1pm when the Speedway pit gate on Lansdowne Rd will be opened. The clubrooms will be officially opened at 3pm followed by after- Nelson Vintage Car Club members, from left, Jim Wareing with his grandson Jamie noon tea for VCC and Car Club members Wareing, Peter Field, Ray Maguire, Gary Plum and Ron Johnson with their cars and two 50yr. presentations to members. outside the new clubrooms. Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked. Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

Just a thought... My mother has had dementia for a good number of years and has been unable to care for herself for the past six. In my mind I know that it is awkward and uncomfortable to spend time with her. It is easy to see why some find it hard to spend time with people in her stage of life. Time on my mountainbike, enjoying a red wine or watching a movie sounds like more fun. Then I reflect on what she did for me over the years without questioning and my heart tells me to get a reality check. What is the right thing to do? Dynamic Dempster leads the way SportS Sam Dempster had one of his best performances in a Nelson Giants singlet in Saturday night’s 107-81 win over the Taranaki Mountainairs at the Trafalgar Centre but you wouldn’t have heard that from him. Sam let his actions do the talking then deferred praise to his teammates after he hit 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in a win so emphatic it’s sparked a glimmer of a top four chance for the franchise which started the season 0-6. Sam lit it up from beyond the arc, hitting five of eight three point attempts. “My team-mates put me in a good position to sink those shots,” Sam says. “Kyle (Adnam) especially worked his butt off all night. “Finn (Delany) knew they were going to double-team him all night so it was my job to knock down those shots when given the opportunity. “The thing that stood out, for me, was how well the ball moved all night. “From where we started at the start of the year, it’s heaps better. “It looked like everyone was hav-

Waimea College adventurers ready for big challenge Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Waimea College’s adventure racing team was learning the ropes this week as they tied up all the loose ends before heading to the Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge final at the Hillary Outdoors Centre in Tongariro. Twelve teams of eight year 12-13 students will contest the five-day challenge which features a series of outdoor challenges that put their skill, speed, endurance and team work to the test. The teams start with two days of group challenges on Monday before heading into the mountains for a two-day rogaine on Wednesday and finishing with a one-day multi-sport race on Friday. Although all five days will be challenging, team captain Maggie McLean says the rogaine, which requires teams to find around 50 check points located around rugged terrain using a map and compass, will be the toughest test. “They are such long, hard days trekking around in the bush and scrub,” Maggie says. “You also have to plan your own route and find all the check points so it’s going to be really challenging.” Maggie says the team has been training all year in preparation for the final and spent most of Easter trekking around the region’s hinterland to improve their fitness. Some of the team also spent two

In addition, they competed in the Kaiteriteri Six Hour Mountainbike Relay while three of them, Cameron Jones, Luke Born and Ryan Doyle, had earlier finished second in the Absolute Wilderness 12-Hour Adventure Race in Nelson Lakes. Cameron, who won the Coast to Coast Two-Day Race in February, will be a key member of the

Maggie says the team has “learned a lot” from teachers and team coaches Marcus Swain and Jane Orbell and from expert caver Kieran McKay during a training day with at Whenua-iti Outdoors. “It’s been really cool learning all those new skills,” Maggie says. “They’re so important too be-

cause the Hillary Challenge isn’t just being fit and fast, it’s about having good outdoor skills and working well as a team.” Jane says the team will need to make a good start in the problem-solving challenges and then help each other out and “utilise the team’s strengths” on the rogaine. She says many of the team “have a good idea of what to expect” because they competed in Get2Go Challenge in year 9 and 10 although the Hillary Chal-

There was also a great turn out at a night rogaine in Richmond organised by the students as a fund-raiser. The team is Maggie McLean, Brooke Robertson, Maddie Mitchell, Tayla Simpson, Cameron Jones, Ryan Doyle, Theo Smith and Luke Born.

Waimea Combined take positives from loss Jacob Page Waimea Combined co-coach Glenn Grant is taking heart from a promising start to his team’s UC Championship campaign despite a 52-21 loss to rugby powerhouse Christchurch Boys’ High School in Christchurch, on Saturday. There is no tougher start to a campaign than a trip to Christchurch to take on the multiple-time national champions but Glenn was pleased with what he saw. “I really thought we started strongly and pinned them in their own half for the first 20 minutes.” Lock Joe Sharland crashed over for a converted try to give the visitors a deserved 7-0 lead. “For a brief period, after the way we started I thought we might be on to do something special.” The middle of the match belonged to the home team though. Their superior size and some poor tackling cost the inexperienced team. “The score blew out a bit, we didn’t tackle as well as we would

with how well we played and we are hoping to do the same again.” The speed in the backline was one of the big strengths of Waimea Combined’s debut season in the competition and Glenn hoped

it would be there again. Tries to enigmatic fullback Matt Stevenson and No 10 Justin Barr earned some late respectability in the score. Glenn praised No 8 Caleb Delany

and hooker Jake Goeddert for their enterprise throughout the game. “We had a bad middle of the game but there are positives there and some work-ons,” Glenn says.

The Modified Mayhem - South Island Superstock Series, at the Milestone Homes Top of The South Speedway was one of the highlights of the season. Photo: Tom Laney/Imagepress.

Speedway plans for next season Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott After a challenging season thanks to many factors, it appears the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway will have its new corporate grandstand ready to go for next summer’s racing. The committee had plenty of off-track projects and challenges with the final plans for the rebuild of the Corporate Stand taking longer than anticipated, but it will be ready for next season, and the Hot Dog Stand falling victim to an electrical fault it was a minor hiccup in the scheme of things with updates planned for the food service areas. The past season was likened to a roller coaster ride, the antici-

pation was huge with a slightly bigger season due to the new roster system put in place by its governing body Speedway New Zealand. It meant an extra meeting was needed for the New Zealand Sprint Car GP and an extra night to host the NZ Midget Title in concurrent weeks. The Nelson Speedway Club had secured Milestone Homes as its naming rights sponsor in the off-season, giving the club financial security to plan in the years ahead, Milestones Homes have committed their support until 2025, a huge benefit for the club. Between the rained-out meetings, there were flashes of brilliance, the New Zealand Midget Title being one of the

best meetings in its 75 year history, racing in its purest form, it was truly a meeting everyone will remember. The final round of the Hanmer Holiday Homes Super Stock Series had all the dramas as the front runners fell by the wayside, it was the locals who battled each other to allow visiting cars to grab the spoils. There were a few grades that were struggling for numbers at times. The Tigers were light, needing a couple of ring-ins to boost the team. Growth in the contact grades may also be an issue going forward while grades like TQs and sprint cars were expanding. The youth grade continues to be strong, giving the club a good base of drivers into the future.

Issues continue with neighbours upset over the noise levels at the speedway, the club have always been sympathetic to its neighbours. Initiatives like moving to earlier start times to limit late night noise, keeping meetings inside time lines and assisting with moving livestock on fireworks night. The number of meetings hasn’t really changed over the past decade, they average about 15 a year depending on NZ titles allocated. The out-going president Wayne Martin hopes that the issues will be sorted and the committee will be able to get on with making Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway “the Best little Speedway in NZ”.

Rugby Nelson maintained their winning ways in the NPD Tasman Trophy after the second round of crossover matches on Saturday. Richmond Rabbits veteran urges young players to stick with rugby league Jacob Page

Veteran Richmond Rabbits centre Sam Hedges is urging young rugby league players to stick with the game in the region, saying that there are quality pathways in the sport. Sam has played more than 80 Tasman Rugby League matches over the past seven seasons and says while he came back to the game too late at 21, the chance to make league a career is there. Sam, who is the top try scorer for the Rabbits so far in 2017, says some players don’t realise how great the opportunities are. “I know when I got back into it I was asked how old I was and when I said 21 they would say that I was too old but there are

plenty of (former NRL scouts) out there and people with contacts who are watching. I don’t think many of the young guys, the 17 and 18 year olds, playing our game know how close they are to that sort of thing.” Sam says he started playing the game through his step father and made his TRL debut in 2011 for Motueka before a season with Wanderers Wolves and now five seasons with the Rabbits. He credits his combination with Rabbits teammate and cousin Hayden Smith as being instrumental in his attacking exploits. “We’ve been playing league, kicking a ball around for as long as I can remember and he knows where I pop up during a game. Sam has also been known for

his durability, as shown when he played on in last year’s TRL final with a torn tendon in his shoulder which kept him out of work for six weeks following the match. I still have the desire to play representative rugby league which obviously couldn’t happen last year but that’s what I’m aiming for in 2017.” Sam says he is committed to ensuring the Rabbits remain a strong part of rugby league but he does see his next role looming. “I’d love to be a coach so maybe in three or four years I’ll look to pass on the knowledge some great coaches have given me. Having said that, if the Rabbits need me then I’ll be there with gear and boots on the sideline, ready to go.”

Wakefield School Celebrating 175 Years

We Need Your Help! In October 2018 Wakefield School will have been operating continuously for 175 years which makes it the oldest school in New Zealand. As part of the planning to celebrate this occasion, a history of the last 25 years since 1993 (the 150th anniversary) is being written. Would you like to contribute? We are encouraging ex-pupils, ex-staff, and anyone else involved with the school over this time, to come forward with their memories, reminiscences and comments.

SituAtioNS vACANt

Personal contributions make for interesting reading. If you have something to share please email it to 175wakefield.school@gmail.com or leave it at the School Office before the 31 July.
