Good news for Waimea Villagers

Simon Bloomberg

There was good news at Waimea Village’s annual general meeting last week when shareholders of the 172-home village received a second consecutive dividend. And the news got even better when Waimea Village board chair Trevor Tuffnell told shareholders they had paid off the $282,000 mortgage that had been taken out to purchase the property in 2013. The announcement signified a remarkable turnaround for the residents who had been involved in a bitter dispute with former owners Michael and Carolyn Wright over skyrocketing fees. “It’s going well and it’s created an atmosphere that is giving everyone a lot of comfort,” Trevor says. “We are fortunate to have an effective board of directors, and we seem to know what we are doing, and the residents are happy. I’ve been involved

with all sorts of committees over the years but this one, to me, has been one of the most satisfying I have been involved with.” The village’s part-time manager Kit Maling, who negotiated a deal for the residents to buy the village in 2013, says the 146 shareholders received a dividend of $240, up from the $180 they received last year. All residents, including the 26 leaseholders, had also benefitted from an increased maintenance programme that included $60,000 spent on resealing

Principal and granddaughter start school on same day New principal Maureen Phillips wasn’t the only new face at Saint Paul’s Catholic School last Monday – her granddaughter Alexi Maguire started there the very same day. While both are excited about seeing each other everyday, for Maureen, Saint Paul’s is special in its own way, having been the chairperson of the establishment board for the school when it opened in 1999. Maureen was approached for the position in 1997 once the decision was made to establish a

Catholic school in the Richmond area. It was a “significant process,” that saw Maureen involved in key aspects such as the placement and design of the school, as well as the appointment of the first teachers. After making the decision to become a teacher around the same time, Maureen began training at the newly-formed teachers campus in Nelson in 1999. She greatly

enjoyed her first 10 years of teaching at St Josephs in Nelson, before spending the last five years commuting from Nelson to Wellington as the consultant for religious education for the Wellington Arch Diocese. The position saw her working alongside all of the 38 Catholic schools in the Wellington Diocese, of which Saint Paul’s is one. “When I took on that role, I wouldn’t have felt I was ready to

“Pretty much all round, I’m not really a sporting person. Although the only thing I’m really interested in is the [hockey], I’ve got a niece who’s in the Blacksticks.”

“Obviously the Kiwi’s, no particular sport, I think the Olympics has sort of lost it’s way a little bit of late.”

“Mostly the Seven’s, I’m just a bit sick of it already with the Russians and stuff like that, but I’ll sit down and watch it whenever it’s on.”

Principal and granddaughter start school on same day FROM PAGE 1 be a principal of a school this size but in my time as a consultant, I’ve done a lot of management and I’ve been studying for my Masters in Education Leadership. When I became aware that John was retiring I thought ‘yep, I’m going to give this a go’,” says Maureen. “I suppose you just have those moments in your life where something feels absolutely right. It felt like the right time for me to move back to Nelson and after playing such a big part in its beginnings, the school has always had a place in my heart.”

As the principal of Saint Paul’s Catholic School, Maureen works alongside 227 pupils and a teaching staff of 13. “I was aware of what was in the heart of the establishment board when the school was built, I was aware of the dreams of the parish and working alongside the staff for the last five years I have an awareness of the high hopes and dreams for the school and therefore I see it as such an honour to have been given this position,” says Maureen. Saint Paul’s held a Powhiri on Tuesday to welcome Maureen, Alexi and other new students to the school.

roads. Kit says the monthly lease has also been reduced from $135 to $100 for shareholders and from $182 to $160 for leaseholders. The Wrights were planning to increase the monthly lease from $182 to $282 before they sold the village in 2013 – it had been just $80 in 2010. Kit says he is delighted that they have been able to pay back the mortgage and step up the maintenance programme while reducing the monthly fees. A security system has been also been installed and fences have been repaired. Resident Shirley Kelliher says “it’s just so much more relaxed, you’re so much more comfortable.

Nelson Olympians honoured before Rio Simon Bloomberg

The Sport Tasman's Olympic Long Lunch was a blast from the past, with seven of Nelson's former Olympians recalling their experiences representing New Zealand at the world's biggest sporting event. New Zealand's oldest Olympian, Ngaire Galloway, 90, headed the star-studded line-up that also included Jeff Rackley, Greg Fraine, Lynley Coventry (nee Hannen), Dave Schaper, Robin Reid and Morice Hennessey. And times have obviously changed since Ngaire competed in the 100m backstroke at the 1948 London Olympics. She had to be accompanied by a chaperone, Mimi Ingram, at the games and trained in a small make-shift container filled with water on the eight-week boat journey to London. Ngaire also had her glory days brought back to life when a

Nelson Olympian Ngaire Galloway stands in front of a photo of her arriving in London with her New Zealand team-mates for the 1948 Olympic Games.

scratchy black and white film of the New Zealand team entering the Olympic Stadium was played for the guests. "It's something I'll never forget," she said. "The fact it was so close to the end of the war - it's incredible they were able to hold them at all." A large photo of Ngaire and her team-mates leaping for joy after they arrived in London for the games, following an eight-week boat journey, was also on display at the Olympic Lunch. Ngaire had no problems rattling off the names of the athletes and one manager in the photo - another Nelson athlete, the late Harold Nelson was also a member of the team. Interestingly, Ngaire told guests that Germany and Japan were not invited to the London Olympics while Russia was invited, but declined. Ngaire made the semi-finals at London, finishing seventh. Jeff 's experiences at the Munich Olympics in 1972 were also extraordinary, both in and out of the boxing ring. The welter weight recalled how he was woken at 5.30am after terrorists stormed the games village and killed 11 Israeli athletes in what became known as the Munich Massacre. "We were staying in a room that was literally from you to me away from the Israeli's rooms. We were woken at 5.30 and assembled in the dining room for the next 15 hours."

The proud parents of three of Nelson's Olympians, from left, Kelsie Smith's parents Lee and Maree Smith, Julian Matthews' brother Nick Matthews and parents Lynley and Phillip Matthews and George Bennett's mother Marina Bennett, received a Nelson flag from Nelson mayor Rachel Reese at the Olympics Long Lunch held at Saxton Pavilion last Wednesday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Jeff also told guests that, in contrast to today's highly scientific and analytical approach to sport, he didn't have a trainer at the Olympics and didn't even know he was fighting a southpaw in his opening bout. "It's very different fighting a southpaw - it was a bit of a surprise, so I lost the first two rounds. I worked it out and won the third round, but it was too late." Greg's appearance at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 was also quite unique because he rode in the 100km team time trial - it was the second-to-last time the event was held at the Olympics. Another cyclist, Robin Reid, who competed in Athens in 2004, admitted he was slightly overwhelmed by

the Olympics. "It was amazing for me because, as a younger cyclist, I never thought I would achieve that goal. I hadn't had a lot of experience at racing so it was a big step up." Lynley gave guests a hands-on Olympic experience when she removed the bronze medal she won the rowing pairs at Seoul from a "soap box" and handed it around the room. Dave also rowed at the Olympics, in the coxless four at Atlanta in 1996 and coxless pair at Sydney in 2000, while Morice was a wheelchair racer at the 1984 and 1988 Paralympics. Morice dispelled a popular misconception, telling the audience that "para" did not refer to paraplegic but to parallel, because the Paralympics are held in the same

year as the Summer Olympics. The Olympic Lunch also looked to the future when Nelson mayor Rachel Reese presented the parents of three of Nelson's latest Olympians, Kelsie Smith, George Bennett and Julian Matthews, with a Nelson City flag to take to Rio. "These wonderful athletes are all in our hearts, but they are particularly in the hearts of these people," Rachel said. Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir said they were extremely proud of Nelson's six Olympians, Kelsie and Anita McLaren (hockey), George (road cycling), Julian (1500m), Jonelle Price (equestrian) and Brook Robertson (rowing). Nigel calculated that Nelson has the highest number of Olympians per capita in the country.

Moutere hosts Sarau book fair

Jackie Fitzsimmons holds up one of the books she helped sort and stack for the Sarau Winter Books, Wool & Fabric Sale. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Over the weekend the Moutere Hills Community Centre was transformed into a book lovers haven filled with tables struggling with the weight of all sorts of books. Organiser and Moutere local Sharon Beuke was delighted by the number of books and browsers that floated in throughout the weekend. “We’ve had quite a few locals dropping, it’s been really lovely. “We’ve got quite a range of

books and I’m a keen reader so I had a wee browse while we were sorting them, there’s definitely quite a few treasures amongst the books.” The winter sale is an extension of the Sarau festival book fair in summer and Sharon says both book sales are growing and she’s receiving more and more donations each year. “Now we get books donated throughout the year. When I started I just cleared out a wardrobe for them but now

it’s so big I need a whole container for all the books.” This winter sale also saw the addition of the embroiderers guild and a popular wool and fabric section where knitters and seamstresses could rummage through different prints and materials. All the money made over the weekend is being donated to Moutere Hills Community Centre and its development projects, such as extending the gardens.

Support to save Salisbury School grows

For the second time in four years Salisbury School has been put on the chopping block, and for the second time supporters of it are hoping to have the decision overturned. In 2012, education minister Hekia Parata announced the school for girls with complex intellectual needs would be closed. But the High Court blocked her from doing so. Four years on the minister has once again announced that the school will close but it is claimed by a supporter of the school, Russell McVeagh, that he has obtained legal advice that could cast doubt on its closure. Russell says the intensive wrap-around service, which is seen as an alternative to schools like Salisbury, could be discriminating against a group of high needs students under the terms of either the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act or the Human Rights Act, or both. And now supporters have organised a “Save Salisbury School” event this Sunday to show support for the school. Among those attending are Labour MPs Jenny Salesa and Damien O’Connor, Green MP Mojo Mathers, New Zealand First MP Tracey Martin, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, Salisbury’s board and other supporters. Damien O’Connor says he has met many Salisbury students and their families over the years and has seen firsthand their stories of personal growth and academic achievement. “I want to see Salisbury’s proposal for its future seriously considered, so that young people with complex intellectual impairment and autism have the same opportunities to reach their potential. This school is very important for New Zealand families and should not be closed.” The event is being held at the recreation room at Salisbury School this Sunday, August 7, from 11am to 1pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Consultation on the proposed closure ends on Friday, 12 August.

TDC releases preelection report A pre-election report for Tasman was published last week, setting out the key challenges facing the district now and into the future. The report outlines the council’s current priorities and financial performance, its forecast financial position, and summarises the major projects that are either underway or proposed for the next three years. Six key issues were identified in the report, including water security and supply, growth, natural disasters, rates, debt and maximising regional opportunities. “The size of Tasman District, our rate of growth, exposure to natural hazards and the spread of our communities provides a number of challenges for us to manage,” says council chief executive Lindsay McKenzie. Lindsay also says the report indicated the council was performing much better than forecast and was well ahead of its self-imposed rates and debt limits thanks to operational savings, fewer emergency works/clean-ups, delays to some capital works, greater debt repayment, low inflation and low interest rates. “I’m advocating a steady as she goes approach in the meantime. We still have some big projects coming up that we need to fund. Maintaining a strong financial position will allow us to meet our aims of keeping rates increases to a minimum, building our emergency fund in readiness for future natural disasters and reducing our reliance on debt.”

Water warning on Waimea plains

Property owners are being warned of elevated nitrate levels detected in some private bores on the Waimea Plains. Tasman District Council environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King says sampling in the Bartlett Rd and Ranzau Rd West area had discovered nitrate concentrations that were unexpectedly high, exceeding the Ministry of

Health’s drinking water standards. If nitrate concentrations are higher than the ministry’s maximum acceptable level, the water can pose a health risk to some people, especially infants in the womb or infants under six months old who are bottle fed. Anyone with concerns about their drinking water supply can contact the TDC.

You are invited to Ponder This, an exhibition by Richard and Mike Ponder Well-known artists, brothers Mike and Richard Ponder, are bringing their art to the Nelson region to raise funds for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. This must-see exhibition features a display of original art, prints, cards and books by the brothers who are both nationally and internationally acclaimed artists and authors.

The brothers have different styles to exhibit. Mike’s unique and exclusive palette knife painting make him a sought after international artist. Possibly best known for his “Stockman” series, his work has a unique style and always a touch of red. In contrast, his brother Richard, a Wellington gallery owner, is known for his bright, textured landscapes and you can see the many influences in Richard’s work, including Monet, Van Gogh, Pollock, Gerhard Richter and Michael Johnson. The exhibition is open daily at the old Powerstore in Trafalgar Street at the corner with New Street, Nelson, from July 27 – August 13, 10am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 3pm Sundays.

GPs ‘disappointed’ in parents Brittany Spencer The revelation two weeks ago that more than 200 Nelson babies are not fully immunised has left local GPs “disappointed”. Waimea Weekly reported last month that the region’s low immunisation rates meant it missed out on extra funding for regions that met certain health targets. Many of those who didn’t want their babies to be immunised did so for philosophical reasons, said medical centres spoken to by the Weekly. But Nelson’s GP spokesman Graham Loveridge says immunisation is a way of preventing nasty diseases amongst children and parents should think twice before decided not to immunise. “We’re disappointed that parents would choose to not vaccinate because we believe there’s enough good evidence that vaccination is safe and prevents kids from having severe illnesses and, on occasion, from dying.” Graham says people have forgotten how bad these diseases are because they’re not around so much and the vaccine programme is a principal reason for that. “A generation ago, people knew how bad these diseases could be and were much more

To see an immunisation first hand, Waimea Weekly joined 15-month-old Matthew Ferguson as he went in for his injections on Monday. Matthew, whose grandfather

was left in a wheelchair after contracting polio, received three injections to immunise him against measles, mumps, rubella, Hib and pneumococcal disease. While there were a few tears, the bubbles and balloons afterwards soon got a cheeky grin back on his face. Matthew’s nurse Megan BryanHeslop says she can’t stress the importance of vaccinating children enough. “As a medical professional, I think it’s really important that all children get full immunisation.” Next week we speak with a local family who will tell us why they have decided not to immunise their children.

Waimea College student Daniel Leaper with his elite award from the Language Perfect World Championships. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Félicitations à vous Daniel Simon Bloomberg Waimea College student Daniel Leaper needed to display plenty of tenacity as well as a good grasp of the French language to win an elite award in the Language Perfect World Championships. Daniel, aged 16, answered 36,043 questions to gain 15,254 points in the international secondary school’s language competition that ran from May 16-26. The year 12 student finished third in New Zealand and 15th in the world for French in the on-line competition that attracted 333,000 entries in 14 languages from 25 countries - he was 124th in the world for all the languages. Daniel says the competition involved reading, writing and speaking French, as well as dictation. He says the dictation was the “most challenging because you had to write down French words that you had never seen before”. However, Daniel says the competi-

tion wasn’t just about speaking and writing French. Students were allowed to answer on-line questions for up to eight hours a day for 10 days, so they had to be determined and organised as well. “I started off aiming to do eight hours a day which was pretty crazy. I got up at 6am and did some before school and then some on the app on my phone at school and then I’d stay up late at night to do some more. “You had to be very tenacious about it. I slowed down toward the end because I was getting so tired, and when it finished I couldn’t get to sleep at my normal time because my sleep patterns had been so messed up.” Daniel says he is keen to enter again next year and plans to expand his French vocabulary so that he can aim for 30,000 points. Daniel’s score in this year’s competition put him in the top 0.2 per cent in the world.

It’s a store that has gun owners solely in mind, run by owners who have both a practical and theoretical knowledge of the products they sell. While Neil has had several hunting experiences during his time in the UK that many could only dream about, James is also an active shooter having just returned from the World FITASC Sporting Clay Shooting Championship. Finishing within the top third and having competed against some of the world’s best shooters, James is often involved in national and international shooting events, having been born “with a gun in his hand.” Neil has over 45 years experience with guns, including five years owning a shop in the UK, and together these lads are proficient in everything from clay shooting to hunting and pistol shooting, in fact, any hunter or shooter will be more than satisfied with what The Gun Shop Motueka has to offer. While Neil and James are the faces of the business, Neil’s wife Isabel is also an important part of the team, working behind

Neil and James place huge importance on integrity particularly when it comes to the retail side of their business. “With things like trade-ins, we do give a fair price and time and time again we get our customers coming back. While everyone agrees we need to make a profit to stay here, we don’t go out to under pay or overcharge,” says James. One of the services they offer is the storing and or disposal of deceased estate guns and weapons. “Technically speaking if old Uncle Tom passes away and no one else has a license then you are breaking the

law by keeping the guns onsite. We are happy to receive and store the guns until the family decides what to do. We can buy them off you, we can sell them for you, or we can rehouse them with a license holder of your choice,” says James. Both James and Neil encourage people in this situation to just make contact with them and they will make sure people are being looked after and in capable hands. If the family just want to sell then Neil and James always guarantee an honest price. WEDNESDAY 3 August 2016

Just a thought... Greig Caigou Greig is an outdoor educator who attends Hope Community Church. I’ve been planting trees and so has everyone else it seems. Nurseries are flat out and some trendy species have bolted out the door so fast that even leaving my fingers to do the walking has not kept ahead of the rush on plants. But I’m loving it - planting trees is good for the soul. An old adage says the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now. There have been some difficult moments of course. I’ve got a large bare site, giving me plenty of scope to craft the countryside, but decisions have to be made about what species work best and anticipating a future array of Autumn colours isn’t easy when dealing with bare branches (even with the advantages of colourful Google images for each species). Then there’s the careful process of selecting the site for all-day sun and good drainage, notwithstanding hauling plants to and fro while my wife experiments with various placements. And all this comes before the actual digging, which even in rain-softened clay doesn’t yield a goodly hole without some effort with a crow bar. But I’m happy about these tasks for the anticipated reward of beautification, and colour, and summer shade, and the fullness of fruit in season from the various orchard species. Planted correctly, I’m confident that the trees will do what they know to do. It is in their nature to grow, to produce leaves, to bear flowers and fruit, depending on their kind. Of course all that is required for this to happen is the right conditions so that the roots go down deep and find ample nutrients of the right kind. It helps too that I stake the trees so they get off to a good start, standing up to the westerlies that will hammer my area from now through until mid-summer. Some might topple or even get diseased if they don’t get what they need. I’m sure you can appreciate all the metaphors for us that are inherent in this planting process and the life of trees. We need to have our roots down deep into the good stuff if we are to develop as we should. To live upright we also need a firmly fixed standard. And just as a tree knows how to produce good fruit, we have in us the potential to yield an abundant life, fruitful to others. These are natural principles, already built-in by our designer God. Feed on the nutrients supplied by the Creator study His Bible. Make Jesus your strong standard and “Christ will make his home in your hearts, as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” (Ephesians 3:17) You will produce the glorious blossom of a life well-lived, according to His purpose, bringing much joy to God and to those others who are looking on. Bloom where you are planted.

PURR-FECT RETREAT : CAT MOTEL Cats aren’t just pets, they’re part of the family, so if you’re heading away and need a place for your feline friend to stay, book them into Purr-fect Retreat Cat Motel. Mel and Symon Beattie purchased the business in November 2011, fulfilling a long time dream for cat lover Mel. Earlier this year the business was given a new lease on life after Mel and Symon undertook a complete rebuild of the premises and are now proud to welcome cat owners to this brand new facility. “The original buildings we believe to be about 45 years old.

They had capacity for 120 plus cats and were largely constructed of mesh, offering good ventilation but making it difficult to regulate temperature”, says Mel. The state of the art cattery today incorporates everything a cat could want for a home away from home. Purr-fect Retreat now includes 52 individual suites, 20 of these with window views which are perfect for accommodating cats that like their own space, older cats that want peace and quiet to sleep or a family of cats who prefer their own company. Purr-fect Retreat also has space for

12 cats in a communal boarding area allowing cats to roam with others during the day while having their own sleeping quarters at night. There are also six isolation suites for cats that require boarding away from others. Purr-fect Retreat’s new facility includes some special features to ensure every guest is well looked after. Two heat pumps make sure the building remains warm in winter while a new ventilation system regularly circulates the air. The building has also been fitted with fire alarms that will be linked to the fire brigade and security cameras throughout allow

Purr-fect Retreat Cat Motel managing director Mel Beattie with one of the catteries residents, Tari. Mel to hook into the live stream anytime from anywhere to make sure that everything is running smoothly. “Owning a cattery was just something that I had always wanted to do,” says Mel. “We had brought our cat here previously so I knew of the facilities and when it came on the market we just knew it was meant to be." Mel is fortunate to have two amazing staff to support her in the day to day running of the business. Tracey Musgrave is a qualified vet nurse with considerable experience in animal care. Jill Weir volunteered at the SPCA for many years and is a devoted cat lover, having five of her own. “So between the three of us we all share

a life long love of cats,” say Mel. Between 8am and 10am in the morning and 4pm and 6pm in the afternoon the doors are open for people to drop off or pick up their cats and, with Mel living on site, they are available to help owners who find themselves needing to leave town unexpectedly. Purr-fect Retreat has an online booking system, allowing people to reserve a suite for their cat anytime of day, and to make them feel more comfortable about leaving their pet behind, Mel and the team are happy to keep owners updated throughout their cats stay via Facebook, text or email. “We decided to reduce our capacity to offer a higher standard of care for cats and their owners. We have designed the new facility to reflect best practice and hope to be Assure Quality-approved soon. We provide all bedding, toys and a scratching pole in every room, and only use premium food,” says Mel. Whether your cat needs medication, has particular dietary needs, or any other requirement, you can be sure that the team at Purr-fect Retreat will look after every feline guest as if they were their own.

Lyttle’s big grand final try Jacob Page

Richmond Rabbits centre Zane Lyttle’s grand final winning try was something to enjoy for the man who’d battled to come back from injury. His try with eight minutes remaining sealed the Tasman Rugby League competition win for his team 22-20 against a spirited Wanderers Wolves, at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, The Wolves led 20-18 having battled back in tricky conditions from an 18-8 halftime deficit. Zane’s try in the right hand corner sent the Rabbits fans into ecstasy. “The boys gave me the ‘get up and go’ chat, and I knew the ball would be coming my way and I had to step up.” Zane is in his third year with the Rabbits having won the title with them in his first season at the club in 2014. However, it was his first time in a Rabbits jersey in a grand final, having broken his ankle in the semi-finals last time. “With the boys that we have it’s

It looked like Wolves would win their first ever title when their gritty second half fightback, helped by a Rabbits’ sin-binning, landed them two points in front.

However, with four lead changes in the contest there was always the prospect of more points being scored and that’s what Lyttle’s try represented. Maloni Soane scored twice for the Rabbits, while Wolves’ Simon Duncan scored a try and kicked four goals for an impressive individual display in a losing effort.

Federal's final performance one to remember Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Call it luck, call it fate, call it timing, Federal's run to the Top of the South hockey glory was timed to perfection. Federal claimed the men's title with a 4-0 win over Tasman at the Saxton Hockey Turf on Saturday. It was the first time they hadn't conceded a goal all season and the first time they had beaten Tasman in two years. Key to the clean sheet was goalie Brad Fisher, who, along with coach Dean Machen, worked out a way to shut down Tasman's penalty corner threats. "It feels good, the boys played hard and to finally beat this team is something we've wanted," Brad says. "I feel like we've been steadily improving all year and the last couple of weeks have been really good." Federal beat top qualifiers Aotea Kiwi for the first time in 2016 in the semi-finals. Dean, who was wearing his lucky blue shoes that he has worn the past four weeks, which has coincided with a four game winning streak, says his young team deserved the outcome, but Brad was special. "Brad and I worked on a plan at training to try to shut down

Dean says he was happy for his team to fly under the radar and produce the upsets when they were needed most. "I couldn't have asked for any-

thing more, I thought our pace didn't let up all game and while they came back at us we defended well, stopped their key players and made the most of our opportunities." Tasman's women's side also came up short in the women's final in Blenheim, going down 4-1 to Aotea Kiwi who were deserved winners of the title.

Ethan Reuben’s long Looking to road to rugby glory Go Organic? Jacob Page

Wanderers prop Ethan Reuben thought his rugby days were over 18 months ago. In January last year, during his first rugby game in America, Ethan suffered a horrific broken leg. “I shattered eight inches of my fibula and dislocated my ankle, and tore the cartilage up pretty good too. “I got told I’d never play rugby again, which was pretty hard for me.” But this year he was named the most improved senior player at the Wanderers Sports Awards on Saturday night at the Brightwater Hall. He played a key role in the senior team winning backto-back Nelson Bays division one rugby titles and has been named in the Tasman Griffins team. Ethan came home from the US and was around the team for their win in 2015 and, with the help of his teammates, he began to train again. The 23-year-old agreed to run the water bottles at a sevens tournament in Christchurch but was told he was on the reserves bench as a player. “That gave me the confidence

Ethan has been a player for Wanderers since he was five

year-old and says the friendship and family of the club is a big part of its positive culture. “To have teammates who make the effort to help train you to comeback is pretty special - it’s like a brotherhood.” Wanderers cricketer Hayden Ingham took home the Wanderers Sportsperson of the Year Award after his impressive performances over the summer.

Jacks Ale House produced a dominant second quarter to dispatch Waimea College senior B 36-27 in their Senior Grade 2 netball match at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, After the sides went into the first break level at 9-9, Jacks Ale House produced an 11-4 second quarter to take control of the match. Waimea started the stronger and had an early three goal advantage, Their transition from defence

into attack was initially too slick for the older Jacks Ale House team to handle. Wing attack Karli Lawson was accurate with possession and the schoolgirls benefited. Jacks Ale House did well to claw their way back to parity. The second quarter was an attacking clinic from the more experienced side. Captain Jane Daubney and goal shoot Jaimea Robinson combined well in the attacking circle and with their defenders winning crucial turnover ball, it was evident the team had hit

their straps after a slow start. To their credit, the Waimea shooters did not lack confidence to shoot the longer shot, but when they missed the defensive rebound was turned into a goal by Jacks Ale House. The remainder of the game was decidedly even. Jacks Ale House’s patience with the ball was the main difference. While the margin did not extend much during the second half, Jacks Ale House always looked the more comfortable team.

RUGby: A four try opening blitz was the catalyst for Nelson College’s 35-19 win over Waimea Combined in the UC Championship rugby match at Nelson College last Wednesday. Nelson College led 28-0 late in the first half thanks to tries to halfback Jack Grooby, hooker Ratu Vagukoto, prop Teu Sami and No 10 and captain William Havili. Just as the game looked to be a one-sided contest, Waimea scored tries just before and after halftime to make it 28-12. The second half proved to be far more even and Waimea deserve a lot of credit for making the game competitive.

He says playing alongside experienced players like Mark Johnston and the newly-recruited former Canterbury United defender Jordan Swaney was an exciting prospect. Swaney, a former Waimea College product has been lured home from Australia at the age of 25.

Feedback invited on regional landfill proposal

Rivercare Meetings 2016

Tasman District Council is proposing a change to how it controls and operates Eves Valley landfill. You are invited to make a submission on the proposal, which would see Nelson City and Tasman District Councils operate a landfill that serviced the whole region, rather than each operating individual landfills. As part of the proposal, the Councils will transfer 50% control of Eves and York Valley landfills to each other. A Regional Landfill Business Unit would be created to run the regional landfill, and would be a controlled by a joint committee of the two councils. The arrangement is intended to reduce our long-term costs and better meet the Councils’ joint aim of reducing waste volumes in the region. To proceed with the arrangement, we are amending our Long Term Plan 2015 – 2025. Find out more: All the detail, including information on the proposal’s impact on capital spending, debt, rates and waste disposal charges is available on our website, www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. You can also view the consultation document at Council service centres and libraries or call in at the public drop-in session at Council’s office in Queen St, Richmond on 11 July, 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm to discuss the proposal. Make a submission: You can make an online submission at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback or pick up a submission form at Council service centres and libraries. Consultation is open from 4 July – 5 August 2016.

Draft Public Water Supply Bylaw 2016 The Tasman District Council seeks your view on a new Public Water Supply Bylaw. A statement of proposal, the draft bylaw, a summary of information, and a submission form is available for viewing on the Council’s website, www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and at the following Council offices and libraries during normal opening hours: • Main Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Service Centre, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka • Golden Bay Service Centre, Junction Street, Takaka • Murchison Service Centre, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison • Tasman District Library, Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Library, Pah Street, Motueka • Takaka Library, Commercial Street, Takaka You are welcome to make a submission on the draft Public Water Supply Bylaw 2016. Submissions close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 10 August 2016. The draft bylaw is now available for consultation in accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act 2002.

NetHui is coming to our backyard NetHui is New Zealand’s most inclusive and diverse internet event – and it’s coming to our neck of the woods on Thursday 13 October. It’s been hugely successful and in the past has been run as one large conference. This year InternetNZ are shaking things up a bit and bringing NetHui out to the regions – and guess what – we’ve got the only NetHui for the South Island. So who takes part in NetHui? Nethui is open and accessible to everyone, and InternetNZ only charges a very small amount for anyone to attend. Send in your ideas! Local communities are the heart of NetHui and the programme is designed by you. If you’ve got anything you’d like to see as a session at NetHui we need to hear from you by the 8 August – add in your ideas online at 2016.nethui.nz/participate. You can put down anything to do with the internet from key issues and concerns to new ideas – pretty much anything goes. Hurry! Programme suggestions are due 8 August. If you want to know more, including how to register, get involved or become a sponsor – head over to 2016.nethui.nz/ Alternatively, contact Karen Lee, the NRDA Digital Coordinator at karen@nrda.co.nz or Ph. 027 644 980.

The Council is holding its annual Rivercare meetings throughout the District. All interested members of the public are invited to discuss river management issues and works. Topics will include flood protection, riparian maintenance and erosion control and there may be others which may be significant to the area you live. If you are planning to attend one of these meetings and have a specific question or topic you would like discussed, please contact Rivers and Coastal Engineer Giles Griffith on 03 543 7244 or Email: giles.griffith@tasman.govt.nz. More information such as previous meeting records can be found on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz (search for ‘rivercare’ in the search box). Join us at the premiere of Our Waters in Common You are invited to join us in celebrating the production of Our Waters in Common, a movie exploring the state of our environment. The film examines the amazing things that rivers provide us, the issues they face, and how communities and agencies are working together to improve them. You can check out the trailer online: www.tasman.govt.nz/link/our-waters The movie comes on the back of a big water quality reporting effort. The beauty and diversity of the district’s rivers shines through and the stories of so many good people working to improve our rivers’ health are warmly portrayed. With such a wonderful community in Tasman looking after our rivers, it is hard not to be encouraged. While you are bound to learn lots, the film presents the information in a very engaging and easily-understood way. We are interested in your ideas about how we can set about achieving a greater rate and scale of riparian restoration, the main action that communities can assist with. Movie and presentations: Thursday 4 August 2016, 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm. Headingly Centre, Lower Queen Street, Richmond.

Are you planning a community art project? Creative Communities provides funding to support community involvement in the arts, whether that’s music, theatre, festivals, mural painting, outdoor sculptures, art in public spaces, kapa haka, singing, art workshops or something else. If you have a great community arts project needing some dollars to make it happen, the Tasman Creative Communities Scheme may be just what you’re looking for. There are three rounds of applications each year. The next round is for projects starting after 15 August, and the applications close on 10 November. There is $39,000 allocated per annum. Average allocations are $1,000. For application forms visit www.tasman.govt.nz/link/creative-communities or call Mike Tasman-Jones Ph. 03 543 8403 for further information.
