Good news for Waimea Villagers
Simon Bloomberg
There was good news at Waimea Village’s annual general meeting last week when shareholders of the 172-home village received a second consecutive dividend. And the news got even better when Waimea Village board chair Trevor Tuffnell told shareholders they had paid off the $282,000 mortgage that had been taken out to purchase the property in 2013. The announcement signified a remarkable turnaround for the residents who had been involved in a bitter dispute with former owners Michael and Carolyn Wright over skyrocketing fees. “It’s going well and it’s created an atmosphere that is giving everyone a lot of comfort,” Trevor says. “We are fortunate to have an effective board of directors, and we seem to know what we are doing, and the residents are happy. While both are excited about seeing each other everyday, for Maureen, Saint Paul’s is special in its own way, having been the chairperson of the establishment board for the school when it opened in 1999. Maureen was approached for the position in 1997 once the decision was made to establish a

Catholic school in the Richmond area. It was a “significant process,” that saw Maureen involved in key aspects such as the placement and design of the school, as well as the appointment of the first teachers. After making the decision to become a teacher around the same time, Maureen began training at the newly-formed teachers campus in Nelson in 1999. She greatly
enjoyed her first 10 years of teaching at St Josephs in Nelson, before spending the last five years commuting from Nelson to Wellington as the consultant for religious education for the Wellington Arch Diocese. The position saw her working alongside all of the 38 Catholic schools in the Wellington Diocese, of which Saint Paul’s is one. “When I took on that role, I wouldn’t have felt I was ready to
