Sport Tasman to manage Saxton Stadium Nelson’s “busiest sports hub” will be in safe and familiar hands for the next six years after Sport Tasman renewed its contract to manage Saxton Stadium this winter. Sport Tasman, has managed the stadium since it was opened in October 2009, and was successful tenderers for the third time, leaving facilities general manager
Brent Maru a happy man. “We are rapt to be awarded the contract … it’s the third tender process we’ve been through, but the team are as passionate as if we had just won a brand-new tender.” “They are focussed on continuing to grow usage, looking at new ways to increase patronage by
working closely with the sports codes who hire the venue, plus adding other programmes - such as the older adult walking circuit and various community fitness and exercise classes.” Brent says his team’s enthusiasm to adapt and improve the service provided to the ever-growing Saxton Stadium community has never wa-
vered and continues to grow. “All the way through our process we look at what we are doing, where are the opportunities to expand, plus what are the insights and statistics telling us and how we can best serve that particular community. The really positive thing about Saxton Stadium is that we are pushed for space and nearly
at capacity through winter … it’s great having buildings that are so well utilised and in demand.” Sport Tasman manages three areas at Saxton Field complex, the stadium, the Saxton Oval pavilion (a popular wedding and conference venue) plus a second upstairs pavilion attached to the stadium.
Waimea College held their annual House competition on September 28 to see which house had the best singers; Hillary, Cooper, Rutherford or Sheppard House. Sheppard House won the hard-fought battle with Rutherford coming in a close second. Cooper House blew the judges away with their gift of making a donation to the charity of the judges’ choosing. Dark Sky park proposal for St Arnaud residents
Everybody knows there’s little that can rival the beauty of the night sky, and now the local Dark Sky committee is on a crusade to encourage the Department of Conservation (DOC) to designate the larger areas of their estate in the top of the south as Dark Sky sanctuaries. There are more than 40 Dark Sky parks, reserves and preserves in the world – areas where artificial lighting is managed and restricted to ensure it doesn’t interfere with

views of the night sky. The night view is protected through education for residents on how to minimise outdoor light spill, and initiatives such as using narrow spectrum amber LED lights in street lighting. Ralph Bradley heads the Dark Sky committee and says, while the ultimate goal is to make the entire country a Dark Sky sanctuary, he would like to see DOC areas at the top of the south including Nelson Lakes, Kahurangi, Richmond State Forest and the Abel Tasman, lead the way.
“When people think of DOC they tend to think of conservation but preserving the dark sky is as much of an agenda as flora and fauna,” says Ralph. The committee is currently targeting St Arnaud and the Rotoiti District Community Council has been seeking feedback from residents, which Ralph says has “been overwhelmingly positive”. “It’s all about enjoying the beauty of the world we’re in, plus preserving what we’ve got. The night sky really is a treasure, it’s just magic.” Softer lighting is re-
quired by NZTA for the street lights through St Arnaud and Ralph says, ideally, any lights in the area would have the orange rather than white tones. “You also want to shield lights, by doing this you have the light hit the ground rather than the sky.” Ralph says any unshielded lights can affect the night sky up to 25km away by lighting up moisture and dust particles in the atmosphere. Have your say: Email jbandsjh@gmail.com to share your view. The feedback period ends on October 23.

The team at the Richmond Aquatic Centre were the stars of the show at the 2018 CLM Annual Awards night, held on September 14, in Nelson. Over 120 Community Leisure Management (CLM) staff from across the country headed to the Trafalgar Centre to celebrate the evening, with the Nelson Tasman centres taking out a huge section of the awards. Crystal Gaiger CLM market-
ing administrator, says she was blown away with all the awards, “I didn’t expect us to win so many. I know we are awesome, but it is so nice to be recognised in that way.” Richmond Aquatic Centre won the overall Facility of the Year award, Shop of the Year, Café of the Year, Staff member of the Year and Aquatics Facility of the Year. CLM facility manager Vaughan Hope says, “I am super proud of the team. At the end of the day it is about the network of
people involved. It’s not only us, we work closely with the TDC who drive us to be more than just another aquatic centre.” Peter Canton, TDC community development committee chairman, says we are lucky to have this calibre of centre in our township, “they just have this ongoing passion within the team, you can see it here. It is the whole team approach within the centre. All the staff are always so welcoming down here.”

Celebration of 175 years of German settlement in Upper Moutere Emily Beaumont Upper Moutere locals will join with descendants of settler German families on Labour weekend to celebrate 175 years since the arrival of the first German immigrant ship to our region. The St Pauli arrived in Nelson in June 1843 and those on board became the first group of Ger-
man immigrants to New Zealand, some of their descendants remain in Upper Moutere village today. The missionaries and some settlers established a village, St Paulidorf, in the Moutere Valley in 1843, but it was abandoned within a year due to its isolation and flooding. From 1850, German settlers
moved back to the Moutere and encouraged family and friends from Germany to join them with settlements spreading to Neudorf and Rosedale, formerly Rosental. Now the entire 175 years of German settlements will be celebrated with the weekend’s main event held on Saturday, October 20, at the Moutere Hills Community Centre, and on Sunday, which
is also Moutere Artisans Day, a special church service will be held at Upper Moutere’s St Paul’s Lutheran Community Church. “The weekend’s going to be amazing, we’re also putting together a really great history display,” says chairperson of the organising committee, Jenny Briars. The history display will be open to the public in the Moutere Hills
Community Centre on Sunday, October 21, for a gold coin donation. It will also include a display about flax, a nod to the flax mills of the past. Jenny says there’s been “great interest” in the event, with some attending from overseas and others from all over New Zealand to be a part of the celebrations.

Local business people up for top honours Voting is open for the public to choose the region’s top business people as part of the annual Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. “These are two new categories for the Business Awards, and we were thrilled with the response to our call for nominations,” says chamber chief executive Grant Kerr. Twenty-three nominations were received with judges selecting five businessperson of the year finalists and five young businessperson finalists. “Unlike the other award categories that are judged by an independent panel, you can cast your vote for business person or young business person, with the
winners revealed at our awards evening on Friday 2 November.” The finalists for business person of the year are Pic Picot of Pic’s Peanut Butter, Darryl Wilson of Wilson’s Abel Tasman, Janis Ord of Motropolis, Andrew Board of Nelson Weekly, and Stephanie Fry of IdealCup. The contenders for young business person of the year are Andrew MacDonald of Absolute Wilderness Freeze Dried Meals, Benjamin Clark of Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, Chloe Van Dyke of Chia, Emma Smith of The Hair Boutique and Johny O’Donnell of ShiftOn. Fishing nets hazardous to wildlife A blue penguin was discovered trapped in a discarded recreational fishing net last week. Biosecurity officer Ken Wright was on hand to free the struggling penguin, which was very much trapped by the fine nylon around what Ken says was every single appendage. This serves as a timely reminder for the public to help clean up our region’s shoreline.
Ken is keen to encourage people to pick up discarded nets, plastic and rubbish to prevent this sort of thing from happening. Nelson Matters Last Friday was the Awards night of WOW and the right time to reflect on what an emotional journey this has been for what is rightfully a Nelson icon. I was there in that rain soaked tent near Wakefield in 1987 when Dame Suzie Moncrieff staged the inaugural WearableArt show to the first of many amazed audiences. This year is the 30th show and 60,000 people will be wowed in the capital over three weeks, but its roots are and always will be, in Nelson. The show programme, the company’s website and of course
the WOW Museum all proudly proclaim Nelson as the birthplace of WOW and that can never change. I love the history of the show and its incredible evolution. It was not invented at a university or a posh arts school, but in a small rural area. The concept was literally ‘off the wall’. To take art off the wall and embellish the body – to be worn. Even today I believe it is best to have the WearableArt experience rather than try and understand the WearableArt explanation. I also love the platform WOW gives to community art-
ists. Each year we see entries from everyone from plumbers, teachers, homemakers and nurses through to engineers who use WOW as a conduit for their creative outlet. One of the strengths of the WOW is its blind judging where repeat entrants, some of whom have professional design experience and can be previous winners, are judged alongside first time entrants with no experience. The entries stand on their own merits and are then individually choreographed to show them to their best advantage. I have friends who enter and they
including reduced fees, easier access to appointments, free visits for children under 13 years, access to free health programmes, timely appointment and recall reminders. Also access to a range of free aged-related services including childhood immunisation, cervical screening, breast screening, diabetes annual reviews and flu vaccination. Andrew encourages people to talk to centre staff if they are unsure of the changes, and notes that enrolment under the new centre structure is optional.

say seeing their creation on the catwalk, lit, choreographed and set to music is an unforgettable experience. But WOW is not just about the show. It has also enabled Nelson and New Zealand to tell a broader story about who we are. Our old tourism branding around beautiful scenery and Maori culture was one dimensional. WOW has helped us take the broader story of our creativity and our own unique style of art to the world. I enjoyed working with WOW in the 90s to assist with national television coverage and later
to help with NZTE funding to take exhibition/mini shows overseas. I congratulate and pay tribute to Dame Suzie Moncrieff and sister Heather Palmer who started WOW and still guide it and those early sponsors who grasped the concept and could see the potential. I also acknowledge all those people who formed the large crew and Nelson artists who continue to create entries each year. This Nelson born event punches way above its weight on the global arts stage. Take a bow. Advt.
Boulevard Café steps up for weekly papers Amy Russ As from Monday, October 1, copies of the Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly are no longer available from the Richmond Mall. Boulevard Café in the Village will be the new pick up point for your latest issue of news in the community. The owners of the popular café say they are proud to be hosting the two papers in their premises and invite the public to come in for the latest news and enjoy the fabulous homemade food and warm, friendly service from the team. Richmond Mall centre manager Belinda de Clercq says they are investigating options on how to tie in magazines and newspapers with the new look of the mall. “The Boulevard Café in the Village is the nearest café to where the stands originally were, in front of Fresh Choice, so people do not need to go far to get their copy of the Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly, it is just a shortcut through Whitcoulls to the café.”

In case weather or a network emergency prevents work from going ahead we always schedule an alternate date for the shutdown. Network Tasman’s contractors make the decision based on whether the job can be done safely in the conditions present on the day. This means the decision is usually made on the morning the shutdown is planned. If the weather forecast is particularly bad, the decision may be made the day prior. Some jobs can be done in the rain, while others cannot.
As owner and operator of the National Grid, Transpower needs to undertake essential maintenance work at the Kikiwa Substation. This repair work will ensure a reliable supply of electricity to St Arnaud and Tapawera areas. Unfortunately this maintenance cannot be undertaken while the substation is in service. Transpower would like to advise residents and businesses in and around St Arnaud and Tapawera that a power outage is required on:
The outage will affect all of Tapawera from Tapawera-Baton Road and Wangapeka areas through to and including all of the St Arnaud area. This includes The Howard and the Rainbow Road areas. Transpower recognises that there is never an ideal time for consumers to be without electricity and apologises for any 6 inconvenience this power outage may cause. If an outage will mostly affect residential customers, we try to schedule it on weekdays between 9:00am and 4:00pm. If it’s mostly going to affect commercial customers we try to schedule it outside of business hours or at one end of the business day. We also try to avoid affecting schools during term time.

Sunday 7 October, from 10:00am - 4:00pm.
While no restrictions apply to the days of the week or times of the day that we can schedule an outage, we try to choose times that are the least disruptive to the majority of people or least disruptive to the most energy-reliant customer affected.
Our aim is to provide at least two weeks’ notice of any planned shutdown to allow customers time to make arrangements for their particular situation. If your electricity connection will be affected by a planned shutdown you will receive a card in the post with the shutdown details on it. School’s obstacle course proves popular Emily Beaumont It’s been two years of planning and construction for Wakefield School’s obstacle course and on Friday, September 28, the course was officially opened. Parents, friends, students and teachers were joined by Lees Seymour from Nelson Forests and Goldpine
representatives Michael Sunderland and Greg Roper. The 80metre custom-built fitness trail, designed by the school’s students and staff, was generously built by parents and local engineering companies, and funded through the PTA and local businesses. Following the ribbon cutting, ex-student Adrian Lister told the story of the Kahikatea tree he went on to plant
in recognition of the school’s upcoming 175th anniversary celebrations. Twenty years ago, Adrian discovered the Kahikatea beneath floorboards. “I just thought ‘wow, how did that thing survive under the floor’, and realised it was pretty special,” says Adrian. The tree is the school’s emblem to encourage students to exhibit Kahikatea qualities by supporting one another.
24 September 2018 Dear Editor, Adrienne Abbot assumes a lot when she expects others to look after her pet. (W.W 19 Sept). Presumably fur-baby was a cat. The cat should never have been on the road and it was the owner’s responsibility to make sure it was safely constrained. Cats on owner’s properties are pets and those running loose off the property are feral and should be humanely killed. The death of this one was probably instant, so it was a humane death. Cats are predators, along with stoats and rats, and are responsible for thousands of wild life deaths each year. All pet cats and dogs must be kept safely on the owner’s property. I HOPE ADRIENNE ABBOT IS READING THIS. Gillian Pollock, Mapua
Editor’s response: Gee, Gillian, you’re a bit tough and I’ll bet no pet lives at your houseand tell me who do you know that constrains cats? I’d love to know exactly how you think this is done? The Abbotts are in the twilight years, paid all their dues and loved their cat. Pretty basic isn’t it and in a good community we have this thing called tolerance. And remember, not all cats hunt. I own a smackface cat (our term) who had a sick bird sit next to him. He just looked, had a wee pat and ignored it. This was outside, too! Maybe the Abbots cat was like this? And the letter was just asking for the decency bar to be raised. If you hit an obvious pet, at least do your best to inform the owners. Loud barking dogs on the other hand………….. Gillian, your comments seem like a Forest and Bird stance?

Waimea College will be playing host to this year’s Festival of Quilts Exhibition this weekend. With merchant stalls, a special guest exhibitor, a Guild sales table, quilts for sale and raffles, the event will be open for all ages to enjoy. Organiser Lyn McCullough says, “we would love as many members of the public to come along and enjoy our exhibition. And we hope to promote the handiwork, and the organisation, for new members to join.” Established in 1983, the guild has grown to 80 members and has around 40 quilters present at most meetings. “We have a special guest exhibitor this year, Anne Scott, a local lady who was the founder of New Zealand Quilter magazine. Anne was recognised in this year’s Queens Birthday honours for promotion of New Zealand quilting, overseas.” A promotional area will be on show with some of the work the guild members do for the community. “Our members are very proactive with the Community Quilts programme, where finished quilts are kept in supply - in cases of house fires or in any other disasters we are able to offer a whole family quilts to keep. Our members are also supporters of Women’s Refuge and 4thekids Nelson.” The Nelson Quilters Guild Biennial Festival of Quilts Exhibition will be on Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, 10am to 4pm. And on Sunday, October 7, 10am to 3pm at Waimea College Hall.

Art makes an impression in Mapua
Emily Beaumont
On Saturday, September 29, the Impressions National Art Awards opened in the Mapua Hall, and remain there until Saturday, October 13. The awards are a selected entry competition featuring mainly paintings, hand-made
art and graphics, drawings and printmaking with a prize pool valued at over $5000. Lewis Della Bosca, owner of Impressions art shop in Richmond, Ruby Bay artist Graeme Stradling and pastel association stalwart Glenys Frobes are once again behind the event.
“There’s a nice diverse range of really good paintings. It’s a great show and suits most tastes,” says Graeme. Countless members of Mapua’s community are involved with minding the gallery, setting up the space, helping at the opening or being an event manager.
Graeme says they intend to encourage the event to be a regular fixture on Mapua’s calendar, and at last year’s inaugural Mapua event they attracted more than 1500 visitors in its six-day run. “We are buzzing with the highstandard of more than 100 successful submissions from all

A dedicated group from the Nelson Branch of the National Council of Women met at Washbourn Gardens on Wednesday, September 26, to plant seven white Kate Sheppard Camellias to commemorate the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage. “It’s absolutely important to celebrate suffrage. It was such a great thing that happened in 1893,” says the group’s secretary, Annette Smith. It was on September 19 when the Electoral bill, granting women the right to vote from the election in November that year, was formally approved following years of campaigning. Alison Heslop and Elaine Henry from Richmond were given the honour of planting the Camellias on Wednesday as both have received the National Distinguished Service Awards for the National Council of Women. Later that afternoon the group joined other members of the National Council of Women to unveil 11 panels featuring 52 women in local government at the Richmond Library. The display will remain at the library for the month of October and accompanying booklets featuring each woman’s story will be available for koha.

Roselea Contracting Stewart and Jane Mitchell own and operate locallybased Roselea Contracting in Wakefield. They specialise in baleage and hay-making with late model, well-maintained equipment. A McHale Fusion 3 Plus baler/wrapper was added to their plant last season. The consistent weight and shape of the bales for both baleage and hay that the machine produces is impressive. Small baleage and haylage continue to grow in popularity, particularly with the equestrian community. With all baleage, best quality Nutritech granules are used to ensure good ensiling and palatability. Other services include medium square hay, direct seed drilling, heavy rolling and post ramming. Fencing is available in the off season. As members of Rural Contractors New Zealand (RCNZ), and with a lifetime of farming and equestrian experience, Stewart and Jane’s work standards are high. Quality product, customer service and satisfaction are key aims for Roselea Contracting. Phone Stewart on 021 1139 940.

are now able to focus on developing their new venture, ‘Water Tank Cleaning.’ “It’s recommended that drinking water tanks be cleaned every two years,” says Wendy. “John has been cleaning tanks for the last 18 months and has sometimes seen tanks with a build-up of sludge and muddy water in the bottom of people’s tanks, including dead birds, rodents, pollen and debris from trees. He has the latest equip-
ment to remove all of that, which is set up on his FWD, which enables him to access nearly all tanks, all year, eliminating damage to property that, sometimes, large trucks can cause.” John can also clean ponds, pools and farm troughs and he doesn’t mind travelling anywhere in the Top of the South. Tapawera student hits his stride Emily Beaumont Reporter
emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Tapawera Area School’s Clay Morgan was the first student from his school to make the Combined Waimea College First Fifteen and had such a successful season he was selected for the New Zealand Area Schools Rugby Team. Preseason training for the Waimea team kicked off in early January and included gruelling runs up the steep Richmond Hills, which induced vomiting in a few of the players, including Clay. Hitting their stride in the season, the team travelled to Christchurch regularly to take on a few of the bigger teams such as St Thomas Christ’s College and with some close games against St Andrews and St Bede’s, by mid-season the team had won 2 from 7 games. “It has been a very cool experience being in such a top-level
competition. A highlight for me was probably putting on the jersey every week. “It was a privilege to represent the Combined School Team,” says Clay. On September 11, Clay travelled to Palmerston North to join the others selected for the New Zealand Area Schools rugby team. With the chance to hone his tackling and kicking skills prior to their game against the Manawatu U16 representative team, Clay went into the game with increased confidence. And, although they lost 31-17, Clay says the entire experience was “amazing”. “The coaches were committed to us, they made use of the little time that they had with us, to teach us and establish relationships. The trip was great, and I am looking forward to next year.” Clay will once again trial for the Waimea Combined team in 2019 and hopes to receive his cap for 25 games.

We will be riding to meet Kell and his team on the South Island leg of his charity ride. This epic trip (see last week’s Waimea Weekly) will also be documented by a film crew travelling with him. We will stop in Havelock and join him as he makes his way through from Picton. We will then travel back to Filco Harley Davidson where Dave and the Filco team will put on some light nibbles and hot drinks. A great chance for a meet and greet and even have a wee peek at New Zealand’s newest Harley dealership! Let’s show the team a huge Nelson welcome! Everybody welcome.

Murchison librarian of 25 years and volunteer ambulance officer, Janne Falkner, has just come back from competing at the World Triathlon Age-Group Championships on the Gold Coast. After training for a year and overcoming a fear of water, Janne was pleased with her efforts and says she finished the race faster than her original qualifying time. “I had a wonderful time, the people I raced with were fantastic and I loved every minute of it. I went in with no expectations of a placing, I just didn’t want to be last. It was always just about being a part of the race, for me.” Janne was pleased with finishing the event “halfway through the pack” after losing two places in the run when she stopped to help an athlete with heat stroke. Overall, Janne says, she was 10.49 minutes faster than her qualifying race. “8.14 minutes faster on bike, 3.13 faster in swim and .38 secs slower in the run.” She says she fell in to the sport “by accident”, starting with fun runs. Her coach planted
the seed for competing in the triathlon, “he sent me to a swim coach in Nelson where I had a year of lessons. I have been petrified of the water since I was a child.” But Janne says it was the running section of the race that turned out to be the toughest part, “it was 28.3 degrees, pretty tough for someone from the South who is used to running in the freezing cold.” Nothing slows Janne down. Just days after the Gold Coast race she completed the Sydney Harbour Bridge Run and the Kings Canyon Rim Walk – meant to be completed in 3 to 4 hours, Janne did it in just over an hour. Next on the list is the Abel Tasman Trail Run in a few weeks, the Nelson Half Marathon in November, an Iron Man competition in December, a 4.6 km sea swim in Auckland in May, 2019 and then what Janne says is one of the world’s toughest, with over 5000 steps; the Great Wall Marathon, in 2019. “I just love it, it makes me feel so good now. When I was at school I was embarrassed at always coming last and didn’t I run again for another 50 years!”

The strong south-westerly wind did not dampen the spirits of the 70 runners and walkers who battled their way up the Great Taste Trail on Higgins Road in the Brightwater 10km road race on Saturday, September 29. Roydon Hawks was the clear winner of the event, coming home strongly in 40.50mins, with Andrew Goodger, taking out second place. Colette Read was the first of the women home in 44.50mins, with Lynaire Topliss a minute behind her. The walker’s race was strongly contested, with Daryl Nish finishing in 1.07.59hrs, only eight seconds ahead of Steve Pauling. Gillian MacDougall was the fastest woman in 1.15.54hrs. These were very creditable performances, as were those of all the other athletes participating. With daylight saving, we are able to commence our 6pm Wednesday evening 5km Series for walkers and runners. The first of these runs is from the Turf Hotel, with details posted on Athletics Nelson’s website. This Saturday, October 6, many of our competitive runners are heading to Christchurch for the National Road Relay, ‘Takaha to Akaroa’ and we wish them all the best as they compete in the 78th running of this iconic event. For those not involved in the relay, we have a pack run on the Richmond Hills, starting at the Washbourn Gardens at A group of midfield runners coming up out of the un2.30pm. Teeball a hit with local kids More than 200 local children embraced the local baseball programme on Wednesday, September 26, in a schools’ tee ball tournament. Held at the region’s baseball diamonds at Champion Green in Stoke, the tournament saw 22 teams enter from schools around Tasman and Nelson. The tournament came on the back of a Baseball in School’s
programme run by local baseball club Nelson Heat and its head coach Marty Grant. Marty says the in-school’s programme is a continuing success, with the day-long tournament an opportunity for the school children to test their new skills. Baseball is currently the fastest growing sport in New Zealand and this growth can also be seen locally, says
Marty, with this the biggest tee ball competition seen in the region for some time. While the focus was on learning and fun at the tournament, Marty says scores were kept and winners announced. Weekly tee ball begins in week one of term four, on Thursday afternoons, 4-5pm at Champion Green. Register at www. nelsonbaseball.org.nz

New season begins Dominik Berghamer The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has launched into a new season with the Open Day on Sunday. We were very pleased to see lots of new faces eager to find out about the club and all the advantages it has to offer. Of course, a big bunch of familiar faces turned up too, to pick up this season’s membership cards and, more importantly, to catch up on the latest news and gossip about the fishing in the bay. Welcome back, guys! The new and improved ramp in the Nelson marina is finished and it works beautifully! It’s so much easier to launch and retrieve your boats now, especially if you are on your own. A massive THANK YOU to Troy Dando for all the hard work he put in to make this happen! the moment. The snapper are not around in big numbers yet, but the ones caught can be huge - I saw some carcasses in the fish waste bin the other day that definitely belonged to snapper in the 30lb range. If you can get your hands on them, try fishing with paddle crabs, this will give you a break from all the unwanted sharks. Gurnard are being caught in good numbers, Delaware Bay is a traditional hot spot and usually delivers well. Small soft baits and flasher rigs garnished with Jimmys Bait Nuggets will do the damage. The massive amounts of bait fish in the bay attract lots of wildlife, dolphins, seals, penguins and thousands of other birds can be seen almost anytime you go out. Kahawai and, unfortunately, barracoutas are amongst them, just follow the birds for an easy feed. Find more info on www.dawn breakers.co.nz or on our facebook page.

Club Waimea Indoor Bowls members were presented with a few trophies at the Nelson Indoor Bowls Centre’s closing night and trophy presentation, on Saturday, September 22. The Nelson Ladies Champion of Champion Singles title was awarded to Mary Jordan. Mary was presented with the Miller Rosebowl. President of the Nelson Bowls Club, Lewis Della Bosca, also from Club Waimea, was awarded the Warnes Cup for Tournament Player of the Year. And Club Waimea itself was presented with Italia Club Trophy for the Nelson Inter-Club 6’s. Mike Johnston, publicity officer for the Nelson Indoor Bowls Association, says the highlight of the presentations was the awarding of a fourth Nelson Centre Gold Bar for winning 25 Champion of Champion titles, to Stoke Club’s Barry Beams. “Barry actually finished the season with a total of 26 Centre titles after winning two this season – the Pairs and the Triples.” Mike says the representative teams had a season to forget, only winning two of their nine inter-centre clashes, “which was very disappointing after the great season they enjoyed last year.” “The annual Mens vs Ladies tournament this year was played on closing night, and the men came out victorious with a score of 33 – 23.

Work towards the final decision point for the dam, expected in late November this year, is continuing. A key part of that is our Local Bill to gain access to Crown conservation land for the dam reservoir. Ratepayers in the dam Zone of Benefit also pay a rate based on the capital value of your property, which is 0.0020cents/$ of capital value. Eg. The owner of a $500,000 home in Richmond pays about $10. Urban water users (and rural extensions), excluding Motueka will face increased water charges.
