Home makeover: surprise edition
Armed with shovels, weed whackers, chainsaws and a meat pack 45 people came to help. Led by members of The Richmond Baptist Church, the group took to Mike and Annie Brown’s house for a three hour makeover, something reminiscent of the television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Three years ago, Mike was diagnosed with a serious form of bowel cancer. At that stage he was given very little chance to live. Glenn Ross, a member of the church, says the property is large and tough to maintain, even for a strong man. But he was delighted that they could do their bit to help out a friend. Neville Hunter, the minister of the church, says the idea to help out had a snowball effect after visiting for a weekend earlier in the year. “They were going to have 20 years work here, the way they were going. “Glenn was looking for a project for the men in the church to do.” They all arrived, much to Mike and Annie’s surprise, on Saturday morning. “Mike thought there were a couple of people coming to help out, but when all the cars started to arrive, he realised something was up,” says Glenn. “They’re just great people and we’re about helping people out, whether they’re in the church or not.” The home makeover consisted of a lot of gardening, clearing, wood chopping, painting, lawn mowing Judah Dunne, 13, Isaac Dunne, 16, Owen Milson and Emily Milson, 12, get and finished with a good old fash- busy at their friend’s Wakefield property for a surprise three hour home ioned Kiwi barbecue. makeover on Saturday. Waimea College took 19 of the 25 awards at this year’s Tasman/Golden Bay SGCNZ Shakespeare Festival, with three Waimea entries taking top honours. In the Shakespeare Globe Centre of New Zealandsponsored event, held at Waimea College on Saturday, close to 200 Waimea, Garin College and Motueka High School students performed 26 scenes from a dozen of Shakepeare’s plays. Entries were five or 15 minute scenes or compilations, kept true to Shakespeare’s words and
intentions, but open to setting and interpretation. Macbeth’s witches were a favourite this year. A 15 minute compilation of scenes from Macbeth won a total of seven awards, including best actor and supporting actor for Waimea College students James Vanner and Lauren Lines, playing Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, respectively. The winners will all travel to Wellington at Queen’s Birthday to participate in the National Shakespeare Festival. From there, they could individually be selected for a national production.

Saxton Field will be getting two more entrance roads, enabling easier access to and from Richmond. Construction on the first of the two roads, off Main Rd Stoke, began last week. The second new entrance will be off Champion Rd, past Garin College, although that is still in its design stages. The Main Rd Stoke entrance road will cost approximately $850,000 and is jointly funded by both the Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council, with NCC supplying 60 per cent of the funding. Saxton Field currently has two entrances, both situated on Saxton Rd. The new entrance will be closer to the cricket oval, athletics track and a potential cycle velodrome. and community facilities Andrew Petheram says both entrances were in the long term concept design for Saxton Field. A request for funding for the Champion Rd entrance will be submitted in NCC’s Long Term Plan. He says the news will be pleasing for everyone that uses, what is now, Nelson’s busiest sporting facility. “It’s got to the point where the use of Saxton Field is incredibly busy, particularly on a Saturday morning. We need to have better access, particularly to the people coming from the south,” says Andrew. “It will take a lot of pressure off Saxton Rd.” The first road is expected to be completed in three months time. The internal pathways inside Saxton Field will also be having work done, connecting the facility for pedestrians and cyclists.

The cousin of a Richmond tramper found dead in Mt Richmond Forest Park in December is organising a variety showcase to fundraise for the people that brought his body back to his family. Sammi Abbott, 18, was driving home from her cousin Sharny Abbott’s funeral when she heard his favourite song on the radio. Her immediate response was to dance to the song, inspiring a variety show that will donate all its proceeds to Land Search and Rescue. The variety show will feature musical acts, dancing performances, Kapa Haka groups and is being hosted by Murray Leaning. The showcase is being held at the Waimea College Hall on April 28 from 7pm. Tickets can be booked by calling 542 2299 or 027 544 7745. It is believed he lost his footing during a river crossing, drowing in the Hackett Stream. Sammi says she was really close with Sharny. “He was an amazing person and one of the nicest people you would have ever met. This isn’t a memorial for Sharny, but it’s because of him that I’m doing this.” Sammi hopes to sell 800 tickets to the fundraiser. Tickets cost $5 and $2 raffles will be sold at the door. There will be door sales for the remaining tickets.

MP finds support back home Nelson MP Nick Smith is this week moving out of his government-appointed Wellington home and relocating to the top of the South where support has been “overwhelming”. Two weeks ago Nick resigned from cabinet after a scandal involving him signing letters as ACC minister for a case regarding a friend. He says he acknowledges that he
“stuffed up” but has received around 300 emails and phone calls of support from Nelson, the region he has represented since 1996. Nick also received support from his wife’s ex-husband who told the Auckland-based Herald on Sunday that he was disappointed Nick stood down from his role as a cabinet minister. “He is passionate about his job. He’s a hard-working guy and loves what he
does. If your wife was going to marry someone else, you couldn’t pick a better guy or stepfather.” Nick says he is taking a two week break over Easter to spend time with his kids and wife before deciding his longterm future. He would not be drawn on whether he would run for mayor of Nelson but he is “absolutely committed” to serving out his term as Nelson MP.

Nominations open for young volunteers
Nominations are open for the 2012 Nelson Tasman Youth Volunteer Recognition scheme, and Jan Glover from Volunteer Nelson believes it’s important to acknowledge the voluntary input of young people, aged 12 to 25 yearsold. This is the eighth year young people’s efforts have been celebrated; however this year the awards will not be judged. Jan says all young people nominated will go in the draw to win an 8gb iPod touch, with those making the nominations going into a draw to win dinner for two at Stefanos and a movie voucher from State Cinema. Winners will be announced at the annual Youth Volunteer Recognition celebration evening at the New Hub, on Thursday 21 June, as part of Volunteer Awareness week. Nominations can be made on line via www.jamonline. co.nz, or nomination forms collected from Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Volunteer Nelson or The New Hub. Nominations close June 1.

Well what a meeting it turned out to be last month. With the Deputy Mayor and numerous staff and councillors on hand from Tasman District Council, the 10 year plan for our district was unveiled. The main theme is that water will be a key element to the future prosperity of the Tasman District. Many members of the community were on hand to find out more about the details and ask the tricky questions. If you want to find out more about the Draft Long Term Plan, visit the webpage www.tasman.govt.nz/ policy/public-consultation/draft-longterm-plan-2012-2022/ and/or make submissions on parts of the plan that you consider important. The extended question and answer session on the draft plan meant that there was not as much time as usual for discussion of other items. However, other points that were raised at the meeting include the fact that the Wakefield Library has now been repainted inside, some of the bricks in the Village Green need resetting to avoid accidents, and that there are a number of hedges and other foliage that are encroaching on the footpaths around the village, making it difficult for pedestrians, and mobility scooters etc to navigate the paths. MARION GRIFFEN Marion Griffen - Yes our delightful Marion will take to the streets no more. You will have to take your own photos of your properties now, and the film processers will be joining us in sadly farewelling her as she shifts into Stoke. For years now Marion has walked the streets of Wakefield, determined to keep fit, enjoying meeting all sorts of old and new friends, while she resided at the Village Rest Home. Marion spent her early years as a child with the British Raj in India, and walking was the means of getting about, and became her passion. She was an avid church goer and attended worship at St Johns every week she could get there. Putting away her walking wheelie frame, her high viz vest, and her camera will be a hard thing for her. Her sister is thankful to the Rest Home Staff, to
members of the village and St Johns, who cared for her during her time here. Marion may be visited at Tasman Park Rest Home in Browning Cres in Stoke, please phone first. Bless you Marion! (Rev.d Allan Wasley).

Wanderers taste victory on return Phillip Rollo
Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers winger Sione Holani was at his bustling best on the weekend. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
It was one of their golden wings which returned to haunt Accessman Stoke in their opening match of the new season. Sione Holani, now plying his trade in Brightwater with Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, put in a commanding display as the returning Car Company division one rugby side got off to the thunderous start. Wanderers claimed a 17-13 victory at the Brightwater Domain on Saturday, in their first year back in the region’s premier rugby competition since relegating themselves five years ago. Stoke lacked a certain punch in the backline against the resilient defensive effort, but the cool head of new boy Jacob Beleski was a welcome relief in the first fiveeighth position for the visitors, a spot that was tried with at least three different players last year. The former Nayland College student kicked Stoke within four points of Wanderers after the break, following an earlier try to his opposite, Jesse Pitman. Jesse was the pick of the Wanderers players in the opening stanza, making inroads everytime he decided to run.
Close but no cigar
Sione scored after 55 minutes following a bustling effort. Wanderers halfback Jackson Harvey then stretched the lead out to 17-6 with the boot. With Tevita Tevita Koloamatangi on the sideline, the job up front was left to experienced campaigners Jarrod Aberhart, Ben Douglas, Stu Tunnicliff and Michael Tyler. While they didn’t fear well at scrum time, the momentum started swinging Stoke’s way late in the match and they regained some much needed possession. When Wanderers player-coach Daniel Perrin was sent to the bin for ten minutes, Stoke hit right back with a score of their own. Brenton Connell, playing in the midfield, capped off a well worked backline move with only ten minutes to play. Jacob added two points from the conversion, bringing the margin to a meager four points. Stoke were camped on the Wanderers five meter line as the clock ticked closer to 80 minutes, but an inability to break the tireless wall of the yellow and blue became costly and as soon as the ball was turned over at scrum time, yet again, the ref blew the final whistle, giving Wanderers a well-earned victory and Stoke plenty to work on in the coming week.
Robbies Bar & Bistro Waimea Toi Toi United lose one-day cricket final
Phillip Rollo There was only one wicket left to capture, but a quick-fire 27 runs from tail ender Marty King was too much as Waimea Toi Toi United went down in the Car Company one-day cricket final against Stoke/ Nayland. With just one over remaining, a victory was still on the cards for Robbies Bar & Bistro WTTU, the Richmond side setting 156/9 in their innings after Car Company Stoke/Nayland sent them in to bat on a
very green wicket. Aaron Mallinson returned to the frame and batted to a strong 48 runs, top scoring for WTTU. WTTU had already secured the two-day championship and Kelvin Scoble Trophy, only the shortest form of the game eluding the Tigers until Sunday. Things looked a lot more peachy for WTTU when they opened the bowling, holding Stoke/Nayland to 10/2, before Mitchell Drummond and his team-mates saved the match.

Curtain closes on speedway season Phillip Rollo
Craig Boote showed he really is boss, winning the open club superstock championship at the final meet of the speedway season. While much of the hype was on the War of the Wings, a pack of modifieds that headed north from all of the corners of the South Island, the local drivers in the superstocks made sure they weren’t forced out of the limelight, at the weekend’s double header. The Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway hadn’t been the most successful place for the 7n driver since returning to the track fulltime this year. But he made every corner a winner on Sunday, One win and two second-place finishes were enough to see ‘The Boss’ edge Dale Ewers and Nick Fowler. Nick Marquet took out the Barry Butterworth Memorial South Island series in the midgets. Glen Leech won the Leech Motorsport Troph at the Classic Hits War of the Wings. The 29c driver’s 28 points gave him a small buffer ahead of Stephen Thompson and Blair McPhee. Christchurch driver Blair Warren won the open club championship for TQ midgets with 158 points. Second was Scott Bailey with Nelson’s Mark Bezett reaching the final podium spot. Blenheim’s Ralph Gillespie 2and Steve Biddulph couldn’t be separated in the stockcars with local Dallas Murray finishing in third place.

Fourteen children from around the Nelson Tasman region got to have a go at golf at the Nelson Golf Course last week. The day is sponsored by the Halberg Trust and was supported by Westpac, Sport Tasman, Eagles Golfing Society and Tasman Golf and gives kids a crack at a new sport. Last year bowls was the sport of choice. Dave Tippett, of Sport Tasman, says it’s a great way to get kids involved with volunteers all helping to show them the skills involved. He says the children all had a “great” time.

Kaitlyn Stringer isn’t the first Waimea College basketball player to represent her country and she won’t be the last. But this weekend she has the chance to show what sets her apart from the rest when the New Zealand Under-18 women’s basketball take court against the best Australian State sides, in Perth. The point guard was officially named in the side just two weeks ago and has the difficult task of coming up with $5000 to fund the trip to Western Australia. The fundraising is a tall order in such a
short time frame, but having been asked by Basketball New Zealand to trial for the Junior Tall Ferns, the grade above her current one, Kaitlyn seems a worthy prospect and is in line for plenty of court time in Australia. If she had chosen the route of playing for the Junior Tall Ferns, Kaitlyn was going to have to stump up $10,000. She says the decision wasn’t down to dollars, although it will please her parents, who have to cover all of the costs. Kaitlyn was named in the tournament team at nationals last year, but this is the first time she will actually play for New

Zealand. In the past, New Zealand has lost the tournament, but Kaitlyn says it is “exciting” to play against a higher calibre of talent. Having had a crop of age-group players alongside her in the Waimea College Senior A team, Kaitlyn says their experience has moulded her into a more complete player. Funds raised from a hypnotist evening at the Nelson School of Music on June 10 will also go towards covering her costs. For tickets, phone Shiree Stringer on 544 5971.
Waimea teams head south for Easter holiday The Waimea College first XV and Under-16 side will tackle some overseas teams and their usual South Island rivals at the Christchurch Boys’ High School Easter Rugby Festival this weekend. The first XV will go up against a team from Australia, St Andrews College and Christchurch Boys’ High School in pool play. While the Under-16’s have the unique experience of facing a side from the United States. Waimea College regularly attends the festival and has done so since 2008. The first XV’s first pre-season match at home ended with a victory on Monday, seeing off Australian side Rockhampton Grammar School 30-5. They head away on Saturday.

GET OFF ME: The powerful running Josh Bason shrugs off a tackle during the Garin College first XV’s 24-23 victory over Buller High School first XV midweek. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Mixed start for Garin The Garin College first XV have a record of 1-1 from its pre-season campaign, beating Buller High School 24-23 on Wednesday before losing to a team from Wellington. Garin had beaten Buller in Westport last year and last week’s match was
another tight affair. Brodie Sidwell and centre Tarras Glover got on the scoresheet early. Nick Allison scored in the second half before Brodie added his second. Kristian Hall-Smith kicked them to a one point buffer.

Tasman Resource Management Plan
Decisions on Amendments
Proposed Plan Changes 32 to 36
Change 22 – Mapua/Ruby Bay Development Council has made decisions on Change 22 to the Tasman Resource Management Plan and matters raised in submissions. It has amended the Plan accordingly from the date of this public notice. All proposed amendments to rules in this Change take legal effect from this date. The decisions affect Plan provisions listed below. Council will serve on every person who made a submission on a provision, a copy of its decision on that provision. A compilation of these decisions, in topic order, will be available for public inspection at the Richmond office of Council from Monday, 2 April 2012. It will also be available from Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nz under ‘Planning Proposals and Summaries’, ‘Decision Compilations‘ via the Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP) link, from this date. Update No. 43 to the Plan, including all amendments to the text and planning maps as a result of these decisions, will be forwarded to Planholders as soon as possible. For enquiries concerning the update or for a copy of the Decision Compilation, please contact Pam Meadows, Ph. 03 543 8581 Email pam.meadows@tasman.govt.nz or Customer Services in our Richmond office.
Council has prepared amendments to the Tasman Resource Management Plan, known as the following: Proposed Plan Change 32: Wall Offset – Residential Zone This Change deletes the requirement for an offset in the alignment of walls longer than 15 metres, of dwellings and other buildings in the Residential Zone. This Change has no immediate legal effect. Proposed Plan Change 33: Minor Changes to Recreation, Open Space and Conservation Zones This Change amends the zoning of some small parcels of land at Riwaka, Richmond, Wakefield and East Takaka where inappropriate Recreation, Open Space and Conservation zoning has occurred. This Change has no immediate legal effect. Proposed Plan Change 34: Fire Risk Management for New Dwellings This Change amends provisions for managing fire risk in rural areas where there is no water reticulation. The requirements for having sufficient stored water near any new dwelling are now more demanding, however Council has also provided for alternative fire protection options including, in particular, home sprinkler systems, but also nearby dams or pools. This Change has no immediate legal effect. Proposed Plan Changes 35 & 36: Water Metering These Changes amend water metering requirements to ensure they are consistent with the national regulations. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of any of the proposed Changes. Submissions can be sent to the Manager Policy, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by Council for a period closing at 4.00 pm on Thursday 3 May 2012. Forms for making submissions are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Changes After submissions have closed, Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support of or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to Council. Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Availability of Proposed Changes The proposed amendments are available to view at Council’s Richmond office, Motueka and Takaka service centres or to access online (www.tasman.govt.nz) under ‘Changes and Variations’ via ‘Policy’, ‘Resource Management Plan’. Submission forms are also available. For more information or advice on these amendments, please contact Rose Biss Ph. 03 543 8421 Email rose.biss@tasman.govt.nz, Neil Jackson Ph. 03 543 88485 Email neil.jackson@tasman.govt.nz or Mary-Anne Baker Ph. 03 543 8486 Email mary-anne.baker@tasman.govt.nz Update Pages to the Plan Update No. 43 to the Plan, including all amendments to the text as a result of the proposed Change, will be available as soon as possible.
