Tracks at Rabbit Is may close Mountainbiking and walking tracks through the interior of the western end of Rabbit Island will be closed under the Moturoa-Rabbit Island Reserve draft management plan that is to be discussed by the Tasman District Council at a meeting in Richmond on Thursday. The draft plan for Rabbit Island, Rough Island and Bird Island was compiled by council following public consultation as part of their obligations under the Reserves Act. Although the report to council states that 86 per cent of the 660 respondents wanted to “continue the tradition of retaining the island’s recreation reserve areas free of commercial use” council is recommending a “change to the layout of cycling-walking trails through forested areas on the western half of MoturoaRabbit Island”. “The intention is to provide

one trail around the coastline and a shorter loop option via Barnicoat Rd,” the report on the draft plan states. “For health and safety reasons, all other general public access to the interior of the forest plantation will be restricted,” it says. The draft plan includes “10 key management issues” including keeping the island free of commercial activities with the exception of plantation forestry and biosolids application. It recommends maintaining the island’s dog-free status, building a grade 2 mountain bike track near Conifer Park, providing horse riding access on the opposite of Ken Beck Drive to the Tasman Great

Passengers ‘lucky’ after Brightwater crash Simon Bloomberg The occupants of two cars involved in a collision at Brightwater on Tuesday morning were lucky to escape with only moderate injuries after a street sign smashed through the windscreen of one of the cars stopping just short of the driver. The crash occurred when one of the cars failed to give way at the intersection of Ellis St and River Terrace Rd and State Highway 6 at about 10am and collided with a car travelling north towards Nel-
son. Brightwater Rural Volunteer Fire Force’s Steve Foster says the drivers and two passengers of the cars were “very lucky” they weren’t seriously injured after a street sign penetrated the windscreen of one of the cars - the car also narrowly missed a brick pillar as it crashed through the fence and into an adjacent property. “It’s quite a notorious intersection with cars travelling at high speed on the State Highway so they were very lucky,” Steve says. Resident Craig Bradley says he “heard a big bang” and rushed
outside to see a big hole in his fence and a crashed car in his property. “They were already climbing out of the vehicle when I got there. They weren’t badly hurt which was lucky.” Senior constable Steve Arnold says it appears the car travelling to Brightwater failed to give way at the intersection and collided with the north-bound car. The driver and passenger of the car that failed to give way were from overseas and were scheduled to leave the country on Wednesday, he says.
