Tracks at Rabbit Is may close Mountainbiking and walking tracks through the interior of the western end of Rabbit Island will be closed under the Moturoa-Rabbit Island Reserve draft management plan that is to be discussed by the Tasman District Council at a meeting in Richmond on Thursday. The draft plan for Rabbit Island, Rough Island and Bird Island was compiled by council following public consultation as part of their obligations under the Reserves Act. Although the report to council states that 86 per cent of the 660 respondents wanted to “continue the tradition of retaining the island’s recreation reserve areas free of commercial use” council is recommending a “change to the layout of cycling-walking trails through forested areas on the western half of MoturoaRabbit Island”. “The intention is to provide

one trail around the coastline and a shorter loop option via Barnicoat Rd,” the report on the draft plan states. “For health and safety reasons, all other general public access to the interior of the forest plantation will be restricted,” it says. The draft plan includes “10 key management issues” including keeping the island free of commercial activities with the exception of plantation forestry and biosolids application. It recommends maintaining the island’s dog-free status, building a grade 2 mountain bike track near Conifer Park, providing horse riding access on the opposite of Ken Beck Drive to the Tasman Great

Passengers ‘lucky’ after Brightwater crash Simon Bloomberg The occupants of two cars involved in a collision at Brightwater on Tuesday morning were lucky to escape with only moderate injuries after a street sign smashed through the windscreen of one of the cars stopping just short of the driver. The crash occurred when one of the cars failed to give way at the intersection of Ellis St and River Terrace Rd and State Highway 6 at about 10am and collided with a car travelling north towards Nel-

son. Brightwater Rural Volunteer Fire Force’s Steve Foster says the drivers and two passengers of the cars were “very lucky” they weren’t seriously injured after a street sign penetrated the windscreen of one of the cars - the car also narrowly missed a brick pillar as it crashed through the fence and into an adjacent property. “It’s quite a notorious intersection with cars travelling at high speed on the State Highway so they were very lucky,” Steve says. Resident Craig Bradley says he “heard a big bang” and rushed

outside to see a big hole in his fence and a crashed car in his property. “They were already climbing out of the vehicle when I got there. They weren’t badly hurt which was lucky.” Senior constable Steve Arnold says it appears the car travelling to Brightwater failed to give way at the intersection and collided with the north-bound car. The driver and passenger of the car that failed to give way were from overseas and were scheduled to leave the country on Wednesday, he says.

“I’d like it to be easier to run community events out there. I know council makes it hard work for the mountainbike club to run kid’s events at Rabbit Island.”

“I think it’s pretty good the way it is now. The roads could be improved a bit though.”

“I’d like it left exactly the way it is. I used to do lots of walks out there and the tracks are great.”

“I only go out there at Christmas, but the roads are a bit rough so I’d like to see them improved.”

The four of us who missed the error have banged our heads together to make sure the word “tsunami” never gets misspelled by a Weekly journalist ever again. STOLEN TV: Police are interested in anyone who has information about a man, shown right on a security camera image, who allegedly stole a television from the Farmers store in the Richmond Mall on April 8. Store manager Deon de Clercq says the man was seen taking a box containing a 30 inch television at about 11am. Deon says the box didn’t have any security tape on the outside to indicate the item had been purchased and the man left the store before security staff could locate him. Snap Fitness 24-7 is the first tenant to sign a lease for a new commercial building that is under construction in Richmond’s central business district. The architecturally-designed two-storey building at 9 McGlashen Ave is being marketed by Craig Chalmers of Mike Pero Real Estate. The ground floor of the 1000 metre square building has already been leased by Snap Fitness and Craig is seeking tenants for the remaining 500 square metres of office space on the first floor. It will be the second Snap Fitness franchise in the region with the company already operating one on Gloucester St in Nelson. Co-owner of the Nelson and Richmond franchises, David Weston, says they leased space in the new building because “Richmond was the growth centre for Tasman”. David says they plan to open their new gym on August 20. Snap Fitness has 46 franchises

The new office development is owned by Nelson businessman Lloyd Wensley, who also owns Mt Campbell Communications and the Brooklyn Power Station. The McGlashen Ave site, which used to be occupied by “an old house and a storage building” was purchased by Lloyd in 2007. “I bought it because it’s a brilliant site with car parking at the rear and cafes and the li-

brary close by,” Lloyd says. “It’s a much better option for businesses to have an office here rather than getting stranded in a traffic jam going in and out of Nelson every day.” The building is being constructed by Kidson Construction and is expected to be completed by September this year. Lloyd says the price of the leases for office space on the first floor are up for negotiation.

Originair ready to fly again Andrew Board

Originair’s owner says he is “a day or two” away from announcing a new deal to get the fledging airline carrier back in the skies. The Nelson-based airline started commercial flights last August with a service from Nelson to Palmerston North, it later expanded to include a Nelson to Wellington service. But in March, the airline – which is owned by former Origin Pacific and Air Nelson owner Robert Inglis – was grounded when the Civil Aviation Authority placed restrictions on Air Freight Ltd operating Originair planes, over safety concerns. Robert says he has made “good progress” on getting his two aircraft flying again. “Yes, we have progressed, but I probably need anoth-

The company’s social media accounts have also gone quiet. The airline’s Facebook page was updated almost daily until March 10, when all activity stopped. Robert says having planes sitting on the tarmac instead of flying has been “a real disappointment, but sometimes life is like that”.

Between midnight and 10.00 am and between 4.00 pm and midnight the trail will be closed from Ravensdown on Lower Queen Street through to Lansdowne Road.

An Alternative Route has been provided along Lower Queen Street during the times this section of the Tasman Great Taste Trail is closed.

First new flashing speed sign for Tasman Simon Bloomberg Hope School teachers and parents think their new speed signs are “awesome” and will help keep their kids safe on the road. The Tasman District Council has reduced speed limits outside a number of schools around the district as a result of a review of the speed limit by-law. It is installing new speed limit signs as part of the review and late last month erected the district’s first flashing variable speed sign outside Hope School on Paton Rd. “It’s awesome,” Hope School acting prin-

I’m so pleased that something has been done about it.” Mel says Monday was the first day the flashing signs were operating and staff noticed that traffic had been driving past the school at a slower speed. The new speed limit is 40kmh from 8.15am to 9.10am and 2.45pm to 3.30pm and 80kmh at other times. School parent Jacinta Boyd says the 80kmh speed limit outside the

Musicians to compete for Snaparock Andrew Board Nelson musicians will have the chance to compete for a spot on the hottest gig in town. Snaparock is coming to the Trafalgar Centre in September, featuring a line-up of Aussie rockers. But opening the show will be a local act and Nelson Weekly readers will have the chance to decide who it will be. A competition between pro-

moters of the festival and Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz will see local musicians enter the competition to play at the concert. Local readers can then go online and cast a vote for their favourite. The three acts with the most votes will then be put in front of Dynosaurs band member Graham Bidstrup, who will pick the overall winner. Event manager Aly Cook says it’s a great way to build

excitement ahead of the concert. “It’s going to be a huge event so it’s great that we can give a local act this kind of opportunity.” Acts have until the end of May -- New Zealand Music Month -- to enter the competition, with the voting process open during the month of June. To enter, bands need to submit a blurb about themselves, why people should vote for them and a YouTube link to a mu-

sic video of them performing. The winning band will also receive a voucher from Begg’s Musicworks. Aly says interest in the twoday Snapafest, of which Snaparock is the first event, has been huge. “We’re really happy with the interest and we’re getting a lot of people from outside Nelson enquiring about it.” To enter the competition, email details to open4snaparock@gmail.com.

The Metservice has confirmed what everybody already suspected, that last month was the sunniest April on record, and forecasters are predicting the warm, sunny weather will continue into May The Metservice reported on Monday that 248 hours of sunshine was recorded at Nelson Airport in April, beating the previous high of 247.6 hours recorded in April 2012. April was also drier and warmer than usual with just 38mm of rain, 47 per cent of the monthly average, and a mean temperature of 14.4 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees above average for April. Meteorological data has been recorded at Nelson Airport since the early 1940s. And Metservice’s Georgina Griffiths says May is also shaping up to be dry and sunny after some initial rain later this week and early next week. “Temperatures in May could be as much as two degrees above average in Nelson and around much of the country,” Georgina says. “We could be in for a record May as well.” However, Georgina says there are a couple of active fronts heading our way and they are expected to bring some rain later this week and again early next week. “We’ve had highs dominating but for the first time we see a couple of low pressure systems coming and they’ll bring some rain next week. But we’ll return to the good weather by week three in May.” Georgina says the warm temperatures have been caused by “warmer seas around New Zealand and especially around Taranaki and Nelson.”

Bid to keep collection in Nelson NMIT’s The closure of Nelson-based NZ Classic Motorcycles has bike enthusiasts from all over the country rallying to save the multi-million collection. The Haven Rd museum closed its doors to the public last weekend, following an announcement from owner Tom Sturgess, back in February, saying that the closure was a result of his recent illness. But local motorcycle buff Adrian Curtis, who is the manager of Tyres & More on St Vincent St, is on a mission to keep the collection in Nelson and is generating interest to buy the collection. “It seems such a crazy shame to see it go,” he says. “We’ve seen World of WearableArts go, and now this. It’s such a waste.” Adrian started spreading the word last week, through Facebook and his radio show, Houston Motor Group All Sports Breakfast. He says the response so far has been “amazing”. “I’ve had people calling and emailing me from all over New Zealand saying, ‘hey, if you need some help let

me know.’ Kiwis are pretty passionate about things like this,” he says. “I’ve spoken to a few people and got some names to contact this week. It’s unbelievable the value of the machinery in there.” Adrian understands that the collection, which is arguably one of the best in the world, could be purchased for around $15 million and is appreciating at around thirty-percent per annum. Chris Jackson, business manager for Sturgess Consulting Ltd, told the Waimea Weekly that no decision has been made about what will ultimately happen to the collection. “We will consider different options soon, and when a decision has been made we will let people know,” he says. “If people would like it to stay in Nelson, and are able to make that happen, then no doubt we will add that to the options, but we are considering some pretty compelling proposals.”

The incoming chairman for NMIT is a former student at Nelson Polytechnic. Daryl Wehner’s appointment as chair of the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology completes a grand circle for the born-and-bred Nelsonian. His appointment is one of a number announced by tertiary education minister Steven Joyce. Daryl is a chartered accountant and the chief financial officer at Port Nelson Ltd, and replaces Ross Butler who completes Daryl Wehner ten years on the council in May, the last six as chair. Daryl says he has a big task carrying on the “excellent work of Ross Butler’s leadership”. He says NMIT will continue to take advantage of being in a region which is a New Zealand leader in aquaculture, viticulture and winemaking, and the aviation and maritime industries. “Our education programmes in these disciplines are reflecting our special position”.

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y o u r f re Richmond’s Peter Knowles debuted his beam engine at Higgins Heritage Park on Sunday. Peter has been working on it, on behalf of the park, for four years.

Peter beaming about his passion Jacob Page Peter Knowles is taking the term handyman to a new level. The 76-year-old former engineer unveiled the beam engine he built from scratch for the Higgins Heritage Park on Sunday. Four years of work, building it and sourcing materials had been well worth it. “These were the first rotational engines of any type,” Peter says. “Which means it was the first time they could put a belt on a pulley and drive machinery. “Before then it was only pumps. “These were designed to pump water out of coal mines.” The first of its kind was invented in the early 1700s and Peter says he’s had a fascination and respect for them most of his life even though he knew little about steam. “I’ve been involved in engineering all my life and I just have a fascination with beam engines because of how revolutionary they were at the

time.” Peter says he had been working on it for four years but it had been relatively cheap to produce. “There’s been thousands of man hours, I suppose but it’s only cost a few hundred dollars to make because key bits were donated and we got steel scraps for some parts. “I’d built a model one for the club here and I thought there were enough spare parts lying around to build a proper one and they said go for it.” Peter says he wants the beam engine to be an asset to the park. Although he had been working closely with the organisation for many years, he only just signed up as a member last week. He says he enjoyed spending his Sunday’s at the Park just outside of Wakefield and planned to help rebuild other engines. It was a busy day at the Higgins Heritage Park with a World War II re-enactment also taking place.

MP added as a judge of business competition Nelson MP Nick Smith is the latest addition to the line-up of judges for the 2016 Business Accelerator competition, and is challenging entrants to bring new opportunities to the region. The competition, which is now in its third year, aims to help small and medium businesses from any sector or industry, to have access to the experience and tools needed to move forward and achieve growth. The $35,000 prize package from the Business Accelerator partners includes access to pivotal services, and their own advisory board for twelve months. Nick will bring his extensive knowledge of the region to the judging process, and says he hopes to see some fresh, new ideas. “My challenge to entrants is to look for new opportunities for Nelson - I’m amazed at the new businesses that are carving out a niche in Nelson,” he says. “The Business Accelerator is a great opportunity for businesses to demonstrate what they have to offer now, and what their potential is. I’m expecting to see many innovative people utilising the riches our region provides.” Returning judge, Manoli Aerakis, partner at RWCA Accounting, says they have already received five entries for this year’s competition, which has only opened recently. “The whole process is really easy,” he says. “After entries close, we’ll select four to five finalists to do a pitch presentation, but it’s really informal - it’s not supposed to be onerous.” Small to medium businesses are encouraged to apply by 5pm, Friday June 3. For more information and to apply, visit http:// innovatenelson.com/business-accelerator/

Your Voice Poppy Day collection: Richmond- Waimea RSA would like to thank all those who assisted with our collections on Poppy Day. Our very sincere thanks to all the people of Richmond and Waimea District who gave so generously to our Poppy Day Appeal. The appeal raised approximately $14,000. A little less than last year but still a very good figure and we are very appreciate of the generosity of Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield, Tapawera and St Arnaud, along with all our helpers. Stuart Mirfin, Treasurer RichmondWaimea RSA. Fluoride in water: In my household there is only me, a person with dentures, and a budgie. What benefit will fluoride in our water be to us. I may have to give my bird bottled water. Albert Smithson. Businesses burgled: Nelson isn't what it was and there are all types moving into our city. Obviously, security will have to be looked at by all business owners. I hope the ratbags get caught and dealt with soon. Brenda Kenny. Tsunami maps released: I’ve been monitoring earthquakes for a couple months now and NZ has been getting around 40 a day, the last couple of days they have jumped up from 2.0 to 2.4 up to 4.0 to 5.0. Tasman Bay has been getting

Well, that should now bring the house prices down, both to purchase and to rent because the insurances will go up. Lee Murphy. Golden Downs golf club to get paint job: We used to “miss the bus” to school and walk down the river to the golf club in the 60s. Kaye Millar. Stoke Winz office to close: Three staff? I have been in there several times and each time there were four or more staff. As for the security guards, I question whether they were really needed. Tim Preece Snr. God help the good folk of Stoke. They will move from a WINZ office of rare care, concern and decency, to the hell of WINZ Bridge Street where cynicism and contempt are bywords and decency utterly unknown. Jim Mitchell. All I can say is WOW. Work around it. I can't see oldies using internet, or waiting or hearing or understanding by telephone, let alone their inability to travel. It's BS, cut down hours and staff a bit or open it up to, maybe, invalid beneficiaries as well. Janis Shields.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz facebook.com/waimeaweekly www.nelsonlive.co.nz I've never been more embarrassed to be a kiwi. I am sure there is work around for such an essential service. My grandparents would love a place like this, as to travel and get to Winz where they have to wait in huge lines for a long time is often not possible. Jess Beardsmore. Remove the three security guards who do nothing other than prevent people seeking help without an appointment or ID. Money saved and people able to access help more freely. Win, win. Neil Williamson. So where are we going to go if we need to see them, always thought it was ridiculous their moving to Stoke in the first place. Brenda Kenny. Why don't they just open it to all Stoke residents- then town and Richmond offices would be less stressed. Lisa Debra Williams. The bus service is excellent I believe and it's a short ride up the straight to Richmond. Could be helpful for some. Diane Sutherland. If was for more than just the elderly it would be better. There are young parents in Stoke who would benefit from this office being available to them, also. Andrea Grocott. To have your say on any local issue, email editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz.

Money for budget service Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A grant from Nelson Bays Community Foundation in partnership with The Tindall Foundation will enable the Nelson Budget Service to help even more people get out of debt and on with their lives. The Nelson Bays Community Foundation and The Tindall Foundation formed a partnership last year, aimed at supporting the family and social services sector across the top of the South Island. The two charitable foundations last week announced their first funding round of four donations totalling $28,000, including $9500 to the Nelson Budget Service. Nelson Budget Service manager Marina Gosnell says the funding will help them cope with "a huge increase" in the demand for their services. "We are only contracted to do 350 clients a year and we were seeing in excess of 600 a year," Marina says. "We only have three part-time staff and a small number of very good volunteers and we coped as

The service is presently funded by the Ministry of Social Development, the Lotteries Grant Board and Rata Foundation, but Marina says there's still a shortfall and they have had to rely on their financial reserves to keep operating. She says the $9500 grant received last week is a big help and will "give us the capability to look after another 50 clients". "Money is often the biggest problem for many people. It's

a huge stresser so we are an essential service. "People come to us when they can't buy the kids' school uniforms or can't pay the power bill or the rent. All those real-life things that happen all the time. We also see people from all walks of life. Sometimes it can be a one-off or it might be somebody who has been in debt for a long time and has been paying fees on top of fees." Marina says the service provides budgeting advice, advocacy, liaises with creditors

and support agencies, supports clients through insolvency options and conducts educational seminars. Nelson Bays Community Fund executive officer, David Kerr, says “the services offered by Nelson Budget Service are closely aligned to one of the core priorities of our funding partnership with The Tindall Foundation. "A lack of budgeting skills is often seen as the underlying problem when people present at foodbanks and emergency housing providers. This donation will help Nelson Budget Service to be able to deliver their services to more people, helping them to improve their understanding of what it means to manage their money and to budget where applicable." The next round under the funding partnership closes on August 16, this year. Details of the application criteria can be found on tindall. org.nz and nbcf.org.nz. Potential applicants are encouraged to begin the application process well in advance to allow time to complete the two-stage application process.

Just a thought... Kathy King, Richmond New Life Currently, depression is a global epidemic. In 1665 the epidemic in London was the bubonic plague which caused the death of a hundred thousand people. People believed the epidemic was caused by infected cats and dogs and so thousands were destroyed. Eventually it was discovered that the plague was caused by flea-

infected rats. Today, millions of lives are impacted by the effects of depression. However, often the symptoms are being treated but not the real cause. Depression can be the result of high stress resulting in many emotional and physical health conditions. As a counsellor I have discovered that stress is related to three main causes. The first is anxiety activated by threatening

! N ation a l A lpaca Day

OPEN FARM VISIT

situations and potential loss. This relates to relationships, finances and health issues. Secondly, stress is activated by unresolved injustices and unmet expectations. The third activator of stress is the imbalance between too much versus too little, such as too many financial demands with insufficient finances. This creates an equilibrium imbalance within the person’s emotional and physi-

ological being. Stress activates the fight, flight, freeze system, releasing powerful chemicals into the physical body. Stress can cause headaches, skin conditions, heart conditions and strokes. Also stress can activate reactive anger and frustration resulting in relationship difficulties. It is imperative to alleviate stress. I have written a module called ‘Flying With Two Wings.’ This is the ability of people to synchronise flying with two wings so as to create emotional and spiritual harmony. The first wing is related to emotional health. We live in a conflicting world which creates

emotional turmoil for people. This involves gaining insights about emotions and beliefs and their impact on the physical body. The second wing is the spiritual wing which involves a relationship with God by the power of the cross. This is about accessing spiritual resources to weather the storms of life. If a bird has only one wing it would be unable to fly above the stresses of its environment. So it is with us. As we learn to fly with two wings we will manage our daily stresses, soar above our circumstances and maintain emotional and spiritual harmony.

Everybody likes listening to a nice story, even dogs, as children in the Richmond Public Library found out last week. The Richmond Library hosted Renee Lang and her threeyear-old Labrador Quanda as part of the library’s school holiday reading programme. Renee and Quanda have been regulars at the Nelson Public Library, where children are encouraged to read books by reading aloud to Quanda and last Thursday they visited the Richmond Library. “The therapeutic value of reading aloud to dogs and other animals has been well documented so we thought we’d get Quanda along to our library,” Richmond Library’s children’s librarian Lucy Brunwin says. “It’s also an opportunity for children who may be a bit scared of dogs to get used to them in a non-threatening environment.”

Sam gets gold medal with broken elbow SportS Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Talented Nelson swimmer Sam McKenzie won a gold medal at the national age-group championships with a broken elbow. The injury, which happened during a social game of basketball two weeks prior to the national put paid to his chance of qualifying for the Pan-Pacific swimming championships. “I wasn’t meant to be playing sport two weeks out from competition, so I was a bit naughty,” Sam says. “Lesson learnt.” Doctors told the 16-year-old he’d be out of action six weeks, but he returned in five days. “It was pretty painful initially, but I knew I had to push through it and it’s good to know that I now can. “There were voices in my head telling me I couldn’t do it and people were telling me similar things. His coach Andy Adair says the

achieved his goal of Panpac’s he now knows he can push himself through the pain barrier. Andy says Sam was capable of going “well under the qualifying time in the 100m freestyle of 51.6 seconds and beating his

personal best of 51.9 second in the process. After qualifying second for the final, he produced a winning time of 53.1 seconds. Ï slapped the water at the end of it – it was a release of emotion and frustration.” “I had a plan, I was going to do 50.7 seconds at that meet and I felt I was on track “There’s no doubt in my mind that Sam could have gone under the qualifying time by some margin,” Andy says. “In my view he was producing some of the best swims of his career.” Sam’s next big aim will be the New Zealand Short Course Championships in September but he will compete at the South Island Championships in Invercargill in August which is a qualifying event for the Australian state event in Canberra. Sam would like to thank his sponsors Funky Trunks, Mountain Valley Honey and Fresh Choice Richmond.

Golf: Greenacres golfer Ryan Chisnall has finished in a tie for third in the Muriwai Open on the Charles Tour. He finished at nine under for the tournament after a final round three over 75. He was nine shots behind eventual winner Pieter Zwart.

Football: Nelson Suburbs fell 1-0 to Mainland Premier League leaders Cashmere Technical on Saturday. Suburbs missed the services of attackers Ben Wright and Atkin Kaua who were injured and suspended respectively. Suburbs are now eight points off the pace in third. Athletics: The 2016 cross-country season officially kicks off with an opening night at the Saxton Sports House this Friday, May 6, at 6pm with a brief informational meeting, social, and an inspiring film about a high school cross country team. Athletics Nelson coach Greg Lautenslager will give a short talk and go over the exciting details for the season. For more information, call 9232321 or send an email to coach@nzrunningacademy.co.nz

Paula wins Nelson Shoe Clinic Half Marathon by big margin Jacob Page

Perspiration aplenty, Nelson Simon Mardon was his own harshest critic following his third victory in the Nelson Shoe Clinic Half Marathon at Saxton Field on Sunday. The 43-year-old wanted to go faster than his winning time of just one hour 18 minutes and 37 seconds. He almost five minutes clear of his

nearest competitor but believed he could have run better. “I did what I needed to, but you’d always like to go faster. “I knew I wasn’t running well so I just wanted to finish with some rhythm. Simon says he has raced the event “on and off ” 10 times over the past 20 years, but got really serious about it 11 years ago. His next aim would be the

Christchurch Half Marathon. Nelson’s Pete Coates was second with another local, Thomas Littlework, a further 29 seconds back in third. The women’s event was won by Appleby’s Paula Canning. Her time of one hour 24 minutes and 24 seconds was six minutes faster than her nearest female competitor and good enough for fourth overall.

Patrick Morris wins power boat finale

The calm waters of Lake Argyle hosted the closing day of the Rotoiti Power Boat Club over Anzac weekend. Perfect weather and calm water saw the lake used for the first time in many years for power boats. Eight clubman boats, several formula 3 and 2 modified hydroplane craft. Raced over the weekend with New Zealand Clubman speed record holder Patrick Morris racing The Judge claiming overall points victory on the day as well as mixing it up in open class racing. King of the Lake was Steve Burns driving his modified VP Burnout. Ben and Marcus Jones from Nelson shared the controls of their formula 3 craft called Southern Lights and gained valuable experience in some close racing. The club is looking to expand its entry level clubman class which is open to all drivers and is hugely enjoyable with boats reaching speeds of close to 50 mph on the calm but cool lake waters. Club spokesman Andy Morris was pleased with the last hit out for the season and is encouraging anyone interested in the sport to contact him if they want to race next season. “We have the power boat nationals at lake Kaniere next Easter plus our annual regatta at the end of February at Rotoiti and we are looking at having several club days next summer.

Richmond the team to beat

Jacob Page

Undefeated Richmond Athletic have underlined their favourites tag in Nelson Bays division one football competition by tipping over last year’s champions Suburbs Seals 2-0 on Saturday. Both goals came late in the second half in what was a niggly affair at Jubilee Park. Suburbs hit the frame of the goal twice in the opening 10 minutes, but Richmond looked to have more time on the ball and certainly won the midfield battle. The deadlock was broken by a well taken penalty from Richmond centre back Darryn Cunningham, with substitute Drew Gaskin scrambling the ball over the line to make the game safe as it headed into injury time. Richmond coach Matt Campbell says his team wore Suburbs down

after the opening 20 minutes, despite not physically being at their best. “We had to stay in the grind of the game and the first goal was going to be important. “That’s the difference this year, we have the quality to get that goal and keep things tight until we do.” Suburbs Brandon Kay was a menace on attack, as was Callum Rollo, but they lacked the final touch at crucial times. Richmond are now six points clear of Suburbs and Tahuna at the top of the table. In other results: A hattrick from Harrison Pine helped Marlborough Mariners to a 6-0 romp over Wakefield; Thomas Amasia and David Maisey each scored twice as Nelson College thumped Nelson Suburbs first XI 8-0, and FC Nelson continued their resurgence with a 2-0 win over Tahuna FC.

Waimea gain momentum ahead of home games Jacob Page

Waimea Old Boys division one rugby coach Mark Milne says his side now has momentum following a 28-13 bonus point victory over East Coast. It was a potential Tasman Trophy rugby competition stumbling block -- on the road in Kaikoura and to a new team. A strong second half performance and two tries from first five eighth Dylan Fletcher helped the team secure a second consecutive win on the road. Waimea now has the luxury of three games on home turf at Jubilee Park. “We turned with the wind in second half and just started getting on top of them. Mark praised the eight-nine combination of Jeff Lepa and James Lash. The team would look to build a winning culture at home after struggling to put away teams in front of home fans for several games. “We’re gaining some momentum now and the chance to go home and continue that is exciting.” Tries by Lepa and Lash gave Waimea Old Boys a slender 10-8 advantage at halftime. Mark described the first half effort as “scratchy at best” His forwards also continued their struggles at scrum time but open side flanker Troy Mangan was tireless at ruck time. Mark says the refereeing was “poor for both sides” and made the first half in particular a real grind. Waimea Old Boys will welcome Central, Waitohi and Harlequins over the next three Saturday’s at Jubilee Park, with each game scheduled to kick off at 3pm. Mark says he expects Central to be the toughest of those challengers but he wants to see his team get back to winning ways so they can challenge for a semi-final spot on the first Wednesday of June.

JAB kicks off its season in style Waimea Old Boys welcomed its next generation of rugby players during its JAB club day on Saturday.

For the under-6 rippa rugby players, it was their first taste of the game. JAB secretary Ange Huhu says

she was thrilled with the turnout. “I think everyone had a great time and Jubilee Park certainly looked busy with all

the games going on.” Waimea Old Boys has 21 junior teams and more than 300 players in JAB this season.

Waimea’s rush of blood costs against Collingwood Jacob Page

Waimea Old Boys division two coach Wayne Bateman was left ruing a “rush of blood” from his players in their 23-14 loss to Collingwood on Saturday. With a penalty in front of the posts and a chance at a 17-16 lead with five minutes to play, Waimea decided to tap and run which resulted in them losing the ball. A late “soft” try extended the margin out for the hosts.

SG

Wayne says it was a lesson learnt. “I’m not sure what they were thinking, it was a rush of blood but these things happen and we’ve spoken about it.” Wayne says he expects Collingwood to be the team to beat this year and believes he had the team capable of beating them if they performed well across the entire park. “We had our opportunities and started to dominate the scrums in the second half but our line outs struggled which is unu-

sual. “I expect Collingwood to be the one to catch so to get as close as we did means we are in the hunt.” Waimea fullback Epalahama Toie proved an attacking weapon, setting up both Waimea’s tries from deep in his own half. Winger Hetadaka Heitia scored a try and kicked two conversions. The team will be back at home at Jubilee Park on Saturday to take on Riwaka at 1.15pm.
