‘Gutless’ closure upsets The former manager of Jean Jones in Richmond Mall is disgusted at the “gutless” behaviour of her employers after she and three staff lost their jobs when the national women’s clothing store chain went into liquidation on Friday. “We had no indication whatsoever that anything was going to happen,” Tanya Rich says. “The first thing we knew was when the receivers or liquidators came in and closed the store - the mall management didn’t even know. “Three guys just walked in and said we ‘had to close the store immediately’. The way this has been handled is disgusting - they are so gutless.” Tanya says she hasn’t

Drone gives stunning view above Richmond

When the fog rolled-in over Richmond late last month Barry Page thought it would be cool to “have a look”, so he launched his unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and took this stunning photo using a remotely-controlled camera. Barry, who has been “playing around” with UAVs, or drones as they are more commonly known, for the last 10 years says conditions for were perfect for flying and photography. So he flew his drone to a height of 120m, which is the legal limit, directly above his Shelbourne St home, pointed the in-flight camera towards Nelson and clicked the shutter. “The sky was perfectly clear above and around my house and all along the Richmond Hills but it was re-

high-resolution screen and it looked even better. So I had it printed on a large canvas and gifted it to my lovely wife Lynda for her 50th birthday.” Barry says the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced UAV he used to take the photo is lightyears ahead of the first home-made drones he flew a decade earlier. It has a number of advanced features including dual-GPS, an auto-return system and can be set to fly within specific heights. “When I first started building multirotor helicopters, there was only one place in the world you could buy one commercially and that was from Germany and they cost more than 9000 Euro. Eventually, China started producing them and the rest is history.”

Ford’s birthday celebrated by car enthusiasts

It didn’t matter if they were historical Model As or modern day family cars, last Sunday was all about celebrating Fords and the man behind their creation. The Nelson Classic Ford Club holds the event each year, on the closest Sunday to Henry Ford’s birthday of July 30. After being called off the previous weekend due to the weather, 73 cars of all shapes and models were present last Sunday. Laurie and Pat Rainbow were amongst those celebrating the birthday with three vehicles on display, although Laurie’s collection numbers many more. “It’s always been a family failing, my granddad was the first in the family to buy a Ford and we just restored that a couple of years ago,” says Laurie. “It might sound rather detrimental but the idea of my getting Fords initially was that the parts were always readily avail-

when Laurie was reading a classic car magazine and saw it being done in Christchurch. Up until then it had only been recognized by the Model As to a limited extent. And it wouldn’t be a birthday without a cake, which is why Pat has made the birthday cake for every event since it was established.

have more people wanting to become shareholders.” Another shareholder, Roger Lusby, says Thursday’s annual general meeting “was one of the happiest meetings that has been held at the place”. “I brought my place in 2001 and I regretted it for a while. I tried to sell it but I couldn’t now I could sell it easily but I don’t want to.” Waimea Village board chairman Trevor Tuffnell says they have made significant progress since purchasing the village in 2013. They had reduced their mortgage, started a maintenance programme, reduced fees, paid a dividend and started to build up an infrastructure fund. “One lady was telling me that, in the past, she would go to a meeting in the village and

go away in tears and now she is going away with a smile. It’s been a very satisfying 18 months for us.” Kit says he is delighted that they have been able to pay back a big part of the loan and get on top of the maintenance programme without increasing the monthly fees. He says they have installed a security system, repaired fences, and resealed four roads and planned to reseal another two this summer. “If they are a shareholder, they are paying less than they were when the Wrights owned it and they were going for another increase.” Owners who purchased a $8200 share in Waimea Village in 2013 pay a monthly fee of $135 to lease the land while leaseholders pay $182.

Shareholders in Waimea Village received their first dividend just 18 months after they purchased the 172-home village following a bitter, two-year dispute with former owners Michael and Carolyn Wright. One hundred and forty-one of the village’s residents brought a share in Waimea Village 2013 in a deal brokered by former Tasman district councillor Kit Maling. The deal was negotiated after a stand-off between the Wrights and residents who objected to plans to increase their monthly lease from $182 to $282 - it had been just $80 in 2010. Waimea Village’s new owners immediately set the monthly fee at $135 for the shareholders who got more good news last Wednesday when they received a dividend of $180 at the annual general meeting. Shareholders were also told that the company has already paid off well over half of their $282,000 mortgage on the property. Ron Green, who has been living in Waimea Village for 16 years, says the payment of a dividend represented “an amazing turnaround” for the residents. “We were all thinking about getting out - it was that bad,” Ron says. “Now we

Suter Gallery upgrade nears halfway mark Jacob Chandler The $12 million redevelopment of the Suter Art Gallery is nearing the halfway mark and is due to be finished before Christmas 2016. Suter director Julie Catchpole says the build has been going well. “It would be a dream if we could open to coincide with arts festival next year, we’ll have to see about that.” She says one of the tricky tasks, when relocating back to the old redeveloped premises from their temporary Halifax St gallery, will be transporting the artworks back. “We have to set up new storage systems in the new building and that’s something we’re really looking forward to; having everything fitted out and equipped to safely look after our many wonderful artworks.”

Parenting centre needs more volunteers

Nelson Parents Centre committee member Bec McEwan, left, and her son Zac, with treasurer Michelle Hunt. Photo: Kate Russell.

One of Nelson’s most valued parenting institutes has put the call out for new members and volunteers, saying that they are running on “bare minimum”. The Nelson District Parents Centre has been helping local parents for more than 50 years and relies 100 per cent on volunteers to deliver its courses. But the centre is now struggling, having gone from 22 members to just five within the space of a year, and are currently without a president. The centre has been a rock for many new parents over the years, running popular childbirth education and parenting courses, and helping new mums to form

coffee groups. She says part of the reason they are struggling for new members is that mums are going back to work earlier. While Michelle says it’s common to go through ‘lulls’ she hopes that more people will put their hand up to help. “It’s a great way to give back to the community, and it’s not just for mums – we’d love it if some nanas came down to help out during the courses. Just getting the biscuits and tea ready, or holding onto a baby to give some of the mums a break,” she says. To find out more about volunteering, contact Michelle on 0211170437, or email treasurer.ndpc@xtra.co.nz.

Less chlorine for aquatic centre pools Swimmers and staff at the Richmond Aquatic Centre will soon be breathing easier after the Tasman District Council budgeted for the purchase of a $120,000 ultra-violet water treatment plant. The centre has experienced some intermittent issues with the chemical treatment of the water with chlorine levels resulting in an unpleasant smell inside the pool. Council has now allocated $120,000 in the Aquatic Centre Activity Management Plan to install the UV treatment plant in 2015-2016. Community development manager Susan Edwards says council has received complaints about the chlorine smell at the centre and they needed to look at options for reducing the need for chlorine. She says the UV treatment plant is designed to reduce the use of chlorine and the chlorine smell and will improve the experience for users. The cost of the UV treatment plant is estimated at $120,000 with ongoing costs of $7500 a year. It will ensure that the aquatic centre continues to achieve higher than the industry average benchmark across a number of areas. The activity plan states that the centre presently rates highly for annual admissions with 290,550 recorded in 2014 and user satisfaction, which was rated at 93 per cent. It is also states that the centre is being run cost-effectively by pool management company CLM with an annual operating cost of $358,000. “It’s a well-used pool and we have had a number of awards for it,” Susan says. “CLM are doing a good job.”

A Nelson woman is encouraging people to look into the past as part of Family History Month, which is being promoted by the Family History Centre in Stoke and the Richmond Public Library. But Maria Martin, who completed an incredible journey to discover her family history, warns that it can be hard work. It requires hours of research on-line and in libraries as well as a fair amount of leg work, tracking down distant relatives and finding obscure records and newspaper cuttings hidden in dusty boxes in even dustier attics. And sometimes family history enthusiasts also need a little luck. The owner of Richmond Antiques and Curios, Maria says he had always been interested in her family history after listening to her grandfather, Nerses Peters, tell stories of his childhood in Iran. After Nerses passed away, Maria often thought about his stories so in 1992 she and her brother John Peters embarked on a journey back to Iran to try and find out more about their ancestry. Maria says finding a starting point was relatively easy because Nerses, who was of Ar-

menian descent, had a cousin, Vardan Andreasian who was still living in the family’s home city of Isfahan. Vardan visited Nerses in New Zealand in 1968 and was the key to unlocking the family’s Iranian past. “Vardan was 96 and a bit deaf and hadn’t spoken English for a long time so we patiently asked him questions. We found out his mother’s maiden name was Baboomian and that her father was called Hudad and that was the key that opened up the generations,” Maria says. The next step was to research that name in the extensive records kept in the city’s Armenian Vank Cathedral. Despite the wealth of history stored in the Vank, Maria says their lucky break came during a visit to a nearby bookshop where the entire story of the Baboomians unfolded. “We went to this old bookshop to get a map to find our way around,” Maria says. “We went inside and there were all these old family photos on the wall and we asked the store keeper who they were and he said ‘My

ancestors, the Baboomians.’ “We couldn’t believe it - his name was Tartavis Baboomian and he was a direct descendant of Hudad Baboomian. Then Tartavis took a folded piece of paper out of a book and it had the family history that went back to the 1600s - it was a spider web of names.” Although there were no remarkable revelations in the family history, Maria says it was “amazing finding out who you are especially when you have had no exposure to Armenian culture”. “I didn’t even think we would get to Iran let alone find out so much about our family. There wasn’t anyone famous in the family history - they were just all peasants but I found out my great grandfather was a trader so perhaps that’s where I got my interest in trading.” Anyone interested in starting their family research can contact the Family History Centre at 119 Nayland Rd or by phoning 547 9504. The Richmond Public Library is also holding a Family History workshop from 10am to 12pm on August 21 and 28. Phone the library on 543 8500 for more information or to register for the course.

Scallops back after 10 years

WANDERERS TOP STARS: Division 2 Player of the Year, Liam Sellars, with Division 1 Player of the Year Steven Soper, at the Wanderers Sports Club rugby prizegiving on Saturday night. The prize giving was a celebratory affair after Wanderers took out the Nelson Bays Division One Championship against Kahurangi and the Tasman Trophy against Waimea Old Boys. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Simon Bloomberg Things are looking up for Nelson’s recreational and commercial scallopers with surveys showing stocks returning to Tasman Bay for the first time in a decade. Tasman Bay has not been fished commercially since scallop populations collapsed in 2005, with recreational catches also declining dramatically during that period. However, surveys carried out by the Challenger Scallop Enhancement Company, which manages the enhancement and harvesting for commercial sector around the top of the South Island, indicate that scallops are making a comeback. Company chief executive John Reid says surveys carried out in May to assess stocks showed a promising new scallop bed in Tasman Bay extending from Peppin Island along the eastern shoreline to Cape Souci. Challenger hopes to take 15 tonnes from the area when commercial fishing starts in September - it will be the first commercial scallop catch in Tasman Bay for a decade. John says the area has a “possible biomass at 72 tonnes” although, interestingly, the scallops are at a depth of 20m to 30m which is deeper than normal. He says that may be too deep for recreational vessels to dredge and recommends trying the shallower beds in Delaware Bay. “It’s early days but our guys have been surprised,” John says. “It seems as though the scallops are coming back in the deeper water where they are displacing the oysters.” John says the scientists don’t know why the scallops are now living in deeper water in Tasman Bay, although there is a suggestion that it is because there is a “good flow of clearer water out there”. John says a fleet of nine commercial boats will take around 50 tonnes, 52 less than is permitted in the Total Allowable Commercial Catch, from the Top of the South’s Scallop Area 7 this season. The commercial fishery usually commences in the second week of September and lasts for about 20 days.

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re James Scoltock outside the Templemore villa on Salisbury Rd that he bought earlier this year. James plans to renovate the home and build two new homes on the land next to it. Photo: Andrew Board.

Templemore villa to get new lease on life A century-old Salisbury Rd villa, known for its berries and ice-cream, will get a new lease on life after investor and builder James Scoltock bought the place earlier this year. The house, known as the home of Templemore berries and its real fruit ice-cream, was put on the market last year and was finally bought by James after a year-long wrangle on price. James, who grew up in an 1886 villa on Richmond’s Church St, says he has always liked older homes and was keen to buy it and renovate it over time. The home was on a one acre section so James decided to subdivide it and put two other homes next to the old villa, which was built in 1907. He has already sold the sections and will keep the villa for himself. “I thought the house could be a good opportunity but I won’t lie, I definitely looked at bulldozing it and putting another three sections on here. There was a little bit more money in it but not much so I thought it would be nice to keep the heritage. Everyone knows the house and it would have been a shame to get rid of it.” James has already taken out several big trees that lined the front of the section – due to the trees’ poor health – and cleared the two sec-

tions for building. He says work on the first house will start in the middle of next year. The shop that housed the real fruit ice-cream stand is still on site and James says he still gets people coming in and looking for an ice-cream. “It’s been quite funny how many people come in. We’ve pulled the signs down now so hopefully that will help.” The villa itself is in need of a lot of work. James says it will take him a full year of full time work to get it up to standard but he won’t make a start for a few years. “The cost involved is pretty high so I don’t think it will be done for another few years.” He says he lives in the house with five other flatmates and it has some interesting features. “It’s got a pretty big grand hall way and a big living area with high ceilings and really nice timber work. But the one that gets the most comments is the ensuite off the master bedroom. It has quite a big in-ground spa, you’d easily get six people in it and that definitely gets a lot of comments, most people call it the porn room.” James says the previous owners subdivided all the land that was the berry farm in the years before he bought it.

Church conversion finally completed Jessie Johnston After more than two years without a church to call their own, the congregation from Stoke Methodist Church finally has a new and improved facility. After the Christchurch earthquake, building codes were reassessed and the fifty year old concrete block church failed to pass the new seismic standards. Congregation members Valerie Knight, Rev. Blokes in Sheds Tour, Wednesday, July 29: Life Education Trust Chairperson Michelle Fitzgerald says that their Blokes in Sheds fundraising tour has received interest from five shed owners after their article in the Nelson Weekly. Out of those five, three will definitely be taking part in the tour. Michelle says it was a fantastic response and that the article made a big difference in getting the spots in their tour filled.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Reports are coming in of good catches of groper, kingfish, snapper, blue cod and other species too. With more modern and reliable sounders and GPS units, many locals are up-skilling their chances of finding and identifying the fish that they wish to target. It can be very satisfying to be able to use your own sounder to search out and successfully catch fish for your family and friends. Then, to be able to use certain fishing techniques and gear to hone your skills even further. This is some of what our Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is about, meeting others and sharing infor-

mation on many styles of fishing to the benefit of all. To sometimes go on others' boats and charters, to experience and get to try different types of fishing. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has its new season starting soon with an Open Day on Sunday, September 20. I will give more detail on this as it gets closer. This is a day to come and meet others and discuss how the club's competitions and events work to see if you would be interested in joining the club on that day. The actual competition starts not long after on October 1. Happy fishing to you all.

100% locally owned and operated The growth of Sunrise Cleaning has led to new offices in Richmond, so that the team can continue to provide an outstanding service. Owner Bruce Farley has built the business up from nothing, and has operated successfully for over 25 years thanks to a loyal staff and the relationships he has forged with his many clients. In 1986, Bruce moved to Nelson from Auckland where he had been milking cows on the family farm. He is proud to say that he has been self-employed since the age of 21 with school bus runs and a relief milking business. So when he arrived in Nelson, naturally working for someone else wasn’t really an option. Bruce put an ad in the local paper looking for a small business to take on

and received replies including a firewood company and a commercial cleaning company. You may think you know where this story is going, but no, Bruce didn’t take on the existing cleaning business, deciding it wasn’t a good investment. It did, however, put the idea in his head to establish a cleaning company from scratch and so Sunrise Cleaning was born. More precisely, the business began when Bruce was walking down Queen St one day and saw ANZ bank were doing renovations. He got the cleaning contract and was soon driving in from Upper Moutere every night for one and a quarter hours of work, which soon paid off as he slowly built up his clientele. “I got Nelson Pine Industries when they

100% locally owned and operated three months I had a reasonable income and quit my day job.” There are many current commercial clients who share the story with Bruce, including Air Nelson, and Bruce says those relationships are what the job is all about. Sunrise Cleaning is now based in one of the office spaces above the Richmond Mall, who also happen to be one of their clients. Bruce and the team have been there two months and everyone is excited about how the new premises will benefit the business. “I used to think that working from a home office was really cool, I could just look out my window and see rhododendrons and beautiful gardens, but I realised since moving here that we should have done this ten years ago. The separation between home and business is really nice now,” says Bruce. The business has also gone through a re-structure, so that it can operate more efficiently and better satisfy clients’ requirements. Since its beginnings, Sunrise

Cleaning has narrowed its cleaning services to achieve quality over quantity, and now focuses on catering to their commercial clients. Bruce says that an efficient operation is necessary to stay in the market against the national franchise opposition. This has

Public get hands-on at art exhibition

It wasn’t just the artists doing the painting at the latest exhibition for Tasman Visual Arts Group. In order to engage their audience, this year the group decided to offer the public a little bit more hands-on fun. An exhibition hunt also gave participants a chance to dabble in some water colour painting or drawing of their own, or they could watch while the group’s artists demonstrated how it’s done. For the group’s members. an art challenge required a phrase of the artist’s choice to be painted onto an 18x18 size backdrop, using any medium they wished. The winner by viewers’ choice was Lois Morgan. People’s Choice for the day

One of the themes I often write about in the Just a Thought column is the fact that people need to slow their lives down and make time for the important things in this world. I say this because, sadly in my job, I come across people who suffer from having been so busy chasing material gain and success that late in life they have deep regrets. The common reflections I hear are “why did I chase the dollar when hindsight tells me relationships

with family and friends are much more important”. Therefore once again I throw out the challenge to readers – slow down and take time to smell the roses. Slow down and make time to feel the grass between your toes as you enjoy the company of family and friends. Having material gain and being successful doesn’t cut it at the end of the day – it is way overrated. A couple of months ago my lovely wife and I took time out from our normal busy lifestyle to do just that.

We slowed down and walked the Camino de Santiago across Spain. Known as an ancient pilgrimage pathway, we followed the French Way leaving from Saint Jean Pied de Port in France and ending up in Muxia on the coast of Spain via Santiago de Compostela and Finisterre. In 36 days, we walked 1000km, never once getting into a vehicle. It was a fantastic experience where we had time for the truly important things in life. Spanish cuisine, talking with each other and fellow pilgrim walkers and being able to pray meaningful prayers instead of one minute won-

Tapawera Nelson Honey left their best until last quarter on their way to a 31-27 win against a talented Motueka High School team in Nelson Netball’s Premier 2 game played at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The spoils were shared in the first round when they drew and early indications were that the accurate shooting of Dylan Sixtus was likely to pave the way for the college girls. Ebbs and flows were the order of the day in the first quarter as first Motueka and then Tapawera scored two sets of three successive goals. Motueka lead 7 – 6 at the first break. While Dylan had the perfect conversion rate with seven from seven, it was the Tapawera offence which began to

grow in confidence. Wing attack Tania Simpson was rock steady, she did the work off the line, played good straight lines and was sharp on the quick release into her shooters. Motueka went into the major break with a 21–14 advantage. Tapawera’s circle defenders Anthea Shearer and Olivia Williams were a formidable duo. Anthea’s height proved to be an advantage for the tip ball, and great body positioning denied Motueka the second shot. Tapawera narrowed the gap to 21–23 with a quarter remaining. Tapawera coach, Sandy Warnes made some positional changes for the final quarter

with Anthea and Olivia swapping. Olivia provided a tighter defence on Dylan, so tight in fact that the talented player only attempted one goal in the final quarter. Motueka was restricted to a just four goals while Tapawera were at their most potent in scoring 10 to take the victory. While Tapawera’s win was the result of a team effort, goal shoot Tegan Cornell could be well pleased with her performance. She was more confident at range and rebounded strongly while the effervescent goal attack Emma Bannister chimed in with another solid showing. Jess Bird was bought back from the bench at wing defence and she was all the better for it as she hunted the ball and applied pressure on the outside of Motueka’s circle.

Kendo training camp coming to Nelson Jessie Johnston Kendo literally means “way of the sword” and is a modern Japanese martial art. In Nelson, Kendo is now a sport to less than 20 people across both the Shoshin Kendo Club and Nelson Kendo Club. Descended from swordsmanship, the sport uses bamboo swords called Shinai and protective armour, combining martial arts practices and values with heart-pumping physical activity. This year, the two Nelson clubs will be jointly hosting the 2015 New Zealand Kendo Federation Winter Camp, a seminar and training weekend for all members registered with the national federation. The seminar will be lead by Morioka Hiromitsu Sensei, 7th Dan, along with two other high grade Kendoka from Japan. No matter what age or level, Kendoka (practitioners of kendo) from around the country will be gathering in Nelson to take part in the camp, which will be run over the weekend of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16, August, in the Stoke Hall. “For us, it’s our first nationally run event, so we want to do a good job of that, but also to do the training [is important to us]. Top national swim coach back in the water Tasman Masters swimmers have been benefiting from some world-class coaching since coach Glen Findlay joined their ranks last year. Glen moved to Nelson with his family at the start of last year after spending 20 years at AquaGym and QEII in Christchurch, where he coached three-time Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallist swimmer Helen Norfolk and Olympic triathlete Craig Watson. He also coached a number of national squads at world champs and worked extensively with Paralympic star Sophie Pascoe and her coach Roly Crichton. "I'm from Greymouth, so I only started swimming at AquaGym when we moved to Christchurch when I was 14. We had Brett Naylor as coach and had a really strong squad with swimmers like Anna Simcic. "When I finished swimming competitively, I joined AquaGym as assistant coach to Brett and after

four-and-a-half years took over the programme as head coach. Then I went to work for the Christchurch City Council developing their aquatic programme we had one of the biggest junior programmes in the country until the earthquake levelled QEII and Centennial Pool." The earthquake also destroyed the Findlays’ home in Parklands, precipitating a move to Nelson. "The earthquake was the catalyst, I suppose, but we were looking at a change before that anyway because coaching is not familyfriendly. You are away a lot and the hours are terrible when you have three young children so, when my wife was offered a job here in Nelson, we jumped at the opportunity." Although Glen has put his professional coaching career on hold, exchanging it for the equal-

"When we moved here I wanted to start swimming again, so I joined the Tasman Masters. It's been good getting back in the pool again and it's good to be able to give a small helping hand here and there. "They are a very diverse group

with entry level swimmers right through to swimmers who have competed at the Commonwealth Games. It's fun swimming with them and I'm enjoying the coaching again, too. "It's also been good catching up with the coaches up here - Andy Adair has an extremely good programme running and Jos Pattison was an absolute legend when I

was coaching in Christchurch there are definitely a lot of good things happening in swimming in Nelson." But Glen is also learning a thing or two about swimming, after diving into open water swimming at the Port Nelson Sea Swim series. He says he was "like a little baby out there" during the first few sea swims, with swimmers from the Tasman Masters that he was lapping over 400m in the pool finishing over a minute ahead in open water. "I didn't know how far I'd gone or where I was going - it was an eye-opener. But I talked to the other swimmers about it and implemented the things I learned and slowly got it sorted - it's been very enjoyable." Glen is preparing for another first as he trains for his first marathon, in Auckland in November. "I've hit the mid-forties so I'm running to try and stay in shape - I want to turn my mono-ab into a stereo-ab. I'm not a runner, but I'd love to go under four hours."

MULTISPORT: Nelson multisport athlete Trevor Voyce will have his first serious hitout of the season when he lines up in Sunday’s Gibbs Hill Challenge in Golden Bay while Naomi Whitehead and Suzie Wood head a strong women’s field. The race starts with a 23km road ride from Takaka to Wainui before competitors run 21km around the northern end of Abel Tasman National Park and then cycle back to Takaka. The race starts at 9.15am on Sunday.

RUGBY: Waimea College conceded a lastminute try to lose to Timaru BHS 26-19 in their University of Canterbury Crusaders region secondary schools rugby game in Timaru on Saturday. The score was tied at 12-12 at half time and 19-19 with seconds remaining when Timaru scored a try in the game’s final play. Nelson College needs to win against Christchurch Boys’ High in their last round robin game this Saturday to have a chance of making the semi-finals after beating Rangiora 38-0 last Saturday.

CYCLING: Team Fulton featured in race nine of the Ray White Winter road cycling series held around Wai-iti Valley and Eighty-eight Valley on Saturday. Karen Fulton finished two minutes 25 seconds behind B grade winner Paul Mitchell to be the fastest woman while her daughter Shaane won the C grade in 1hr 25min 56sec. Robin Reid won the A grade race in 1hr 16min 32sec, just five seconds clear of Chris Sharland.

LEAGUE: Tahunanui Tigers have been crowned Tasman Rugby League champions after a 30-22 win over Victory Phoenix at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The see-sawing match was only decided in the final act of the game, when a Tiger scored in the left-hand corner to give his side a six point lead with time up on the clock. Both sides threw everything at the game but the Tigers had the better of the final ten minutes and deserved to come away with the win.

Notice of Road Stopping At the request of the adjacent landowners, Tasman District Council is notifying its intention to stop a service lane which runs off Oxford Street in Richmond near the corner of Queen Street. The proposal to stop this service lane is being considered pursuant to Schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 1974. The land is shown as a Service Lane on Survey Office Plan 15071. The land area is approximately 385 square metres. The road stopping application is being made by BP Oil New Zealand Limited, which owns land on both sides of the service lane.
