First winter race Yasmin and Fletcher Van Houtte with Talei Currie attempt to manoeuvre the giant pumpkins they played a part in growing, after home-based childcare provider Village Kids delivered giant pumpkin plants to each of their educators to grow alongside their children this season. “The kids really enjoyed the experience, they all got stuck into helping water them and got a real buzz out of watching their growth,” says Village Kids manager Kirstie Van Houtte. The pumpkins are unlikely to see the inside of a pot anytime soon as they provide endless entertainment with the children playing on and around them, even dressing them up with hats. Development of a $130 million-dollar residential village has begun on the outskirts of Richmond, with the focus on an inclusive and permeable layout to create connection and integration with the wider community. Arvida Group is one of the largest aged-care providers in the country and this will be their third village in the region, following The Wood and Oakwoods. Chief executive Bill McDonald says that while they will be providing care facilities and creating housing for older people, they don’t want to restrict their services to just people in the community. Bill says a ‘Wellness Centre’ will operate as the ’front door’ to the neighbourhood, providing extensive health and recreation facilities to both residents and the greater community. “Arvida is trying to modify what it is offering across the country and the Richmond development will really

Despite a recent survey from Westpac NZ citing businesses in our region are lacking confidence, Richmond retailers are optimistic for the future. Craig Taylor, managing director of Taylors We Love Shoes in Richmond, says we can look positively forward to improvement and growth, particularly in the greater Richmond area. “Without a doubt, the newlook Queen St with its pedestrian-friendly design is going to make shopping in Richmond a lot easier and more pleasant,” says Craig. “Add to this the massive housing development happening on the outskirts of Richmond and I think we can expect some much better times for our businesses.” It’s a sentiment shared by Richmond Mall manager Belinda DeClercq, who says that foot traffic and sales are growing monthly. “We have several retailers expanding and upgrading their premises which shows real business confidence,” says Belinda. The survey claimed obstacles for business growth included a lack of skilled staff, access to funds and increased competition. And Craig admits the lure

known as The Meadows, owned by locals – Andrew Spittal, Simon Collett, Gary Donaldson and Graham Vercoe, and is expected to provide around 800 new homes.
The village is planned over five stages and is looking to be completed in four to five years. It is estimated to provide around 150 one to three-bedroom villas along with 60–80 care units. A

He is due to appear in Christchurch District Court
on June 18. The arrests come as a huge relief to police and to the men’s victims across the Nelson Bays and Tasman area. “The jewellery stolen by Christopher Payne included items of great sentimental value, some of which had belonged to victims’ deceased family members,” says Nelson Bays tactical Crime Unit sergeant Dale Smith. “The burglaries have had a huge impact on people who have lost items they may never see again and victims have been appreciative of the work done by police. “It’s pleasing that we have been able to hold these offenders to account, thanks to the great work by Nelson Bays Police and Greymouth Police who arrested the pair,” says Dale. A lot of the jewellery has not been recovered but police and residents alike are pleased Payne’s spree has ended. Police encourage anyone who thinks they may be a victim of theft to contact their local Police station. If you see a crime being committed, call 111 in the first instance.

A slice of history White Hart Hotel was built, approximately at the site of the current Richmond Motel and Holiday Park, by George Fairweather Moonlight in 1865, who was the first proprietor. He was followed in 1871 by a Mrs Kite. During the gold mining boom years, seven pubs in and around Richmond did a roaring trade. They included the White Hart, Plough Inn, Railway Hotel and Star and Garter. The building was destroyed by fire 1917. Following the fire, it was rebuilt as a boarding house run by a Mrs Windlebourne. A third building was erected on
the site which now houses the caretaker of the current motor camp. Richard Hyland was a proprietor at the White Hart Hotel in 1883 until 1885. Richard and his wife Elizabeth lost three children, Henry, Mary Jane and Helena, and owned land at Gladstone Road and Bateups Road corner where they planted three gum trees in memory of their children, thus eventually named Three Brothers Corner. There was a fourth tree planted for another child who had died, but this tree did not survive.

Roundabout The small temporary Talbot St roundabout, which was installed after Easter, could be a permanent fixture at the north-side at the middle entry/exit to the carpark entrance to Richmond Mall carpark. After receiving positive feedback, Richard Kirby, Tasman District Council’s engineering services manager, says the discussion is ongoing and he would like the engineering services committee to know that they might even consider putting in a permanent roundabout to help with traffic flows. Before the roundabout was installed, issues had been ongoing with the all the roadworks happening in the area. Tempers reached boiling point on the afternoon of Anzac Day, with some waiting well over half an hour just to get out of the carpark.

Contaminated fuel contained A boatload of contaminated diesel destined for NPD hit our shores a few weeks ago. Unsure of its origins Barry Sheridan NPD CEO says while the load was within New Zealand’s legal specifications, it was their first-class filtration system that alerted them to the contamination. “There were very fine particles which caused the filters to block on our sites, so we were one of the first to realise,” says Barry. The company’s decision to implement a filtration system review on all tanks a few years ago ensured the contamination “didn’t affect consumers too much”. The contaminated fuel has been quarantined in Nelson.

A man who stole more than $200,000 worth of jewellery, mainly from residential homes across the Nelson Bays and Tasman area, including Richmond, Brightwater and Appleby, has been arrested. His offending also took him to Picton and Blenheim. Christopher Payne, 38, was located on Monday, May 28, in Tötara Flats, near Greymouth, after being spotted by a passing police patrol car around 2.30pm. Recognising a car that was used during a burglary in Motueka on Friday, May 25, police followed the car before the driver pulled over. Two men fled from the car on foot onto a rural property. A police dog team located them on the property and the pair were arrested. Police had four warrants to arrest Christopher Payne for 19 burglaries in the Nelson Bays area since January, in which more than $200,000 jewellery was taken. He also faces two drugs-related charges. He is due to appear in the Greymouth District Court on June 13.

A life full of adventure and music came to an end for well-known Richmond man John (Jack) Russel Wentworth earlier this year. The esteemed musician was born in 1931 during the great depression in the States where, from an early age, he learned the heartache of hardship, the rewards of hard work and to chase dreams. As a teenager he joined the US Airforce which took him to Eniwetok Island, followed by Northern Japan where he immersed himself in the music, even learning Japan’s traditional instrument the shamisen. Later, while based in Alaska, Jack’s detachment was marooned for several days where Jack’s innovative procedures ensured contact remained between Alaska and Washington, earning him a medal and the choice of anywhere in the world for his next posting. And so began a love affair with God’s Own. Posted to Blenheim, Jack learned to sail in the Marlborough Sounds while indulging his love of theatre and music, before hitting retirement, returning to the States, filing for divorce and purchasing his beloved ‘Don Quixote”, a 21 foot trailer-sailer.
Richard Fehlman and Jack Wentworth graced the front page of the New Zealand Herald on 12 November, 1976, after arriving onboard a trailer-sailer from the States. Photo: Supplied. Back in the states Jack struck up an unlikely friendship with fellow actor Richard Fehlman, a hippie more than two decades his junior. Together this dubious duo set about ‘beefing up’ the Don Quixote as they hatched a plan that culminated in their sailing to New Zealand, where Jack planned to stay. This was a feat previously unattained by a trailer-sailer. Richard says their 8-month journey was “wildly adventurous, exciting and danger-prone that changed our lives”. At one stage their rudder ripped
off during high seas and Jack figured out how to steer with sails alone. “That’s when I realised that Jack didn’t know how to do everything, but could figure out how to fix anything,” says Richard. With Jack’s immigration requirements to land in New Zealand before his 45th birthday, the pair arrived on our shores “battered, tattered and soaking wet”. Resettling in Blenheim, Jack moved over the hill in 1977 and brought with him a talent and enthusiasm for music. Teaching guitar at Waimea Col-
Liz Wentworth takes time to reminisce about her husband Jack’s adventurous life. Photo: Emily Beaumont. lege, Jack instigated and took part in numerous music groups and sang in a band, while always encouraging others to sing. He never lost his love for the sea and sailing, and on a soft sum-
mer’s evening in January he quietly slipped his moorings for the final time. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Liz, and his three children David, Daniel and Catherine.
Richmond Town Hall manager Mary-Ann McNatty has had a rough time over the last few years, but she refuses to let it get her down. Her run of bad luck began in October 2015 when, at 52, she broke her neck in a fall from her horse behind the Wai-iti Domain in Wakefield. Following the fall, Mary-Ann braced her neck by tucking her helmet beneath her chin and climbed 400 metres up a steep hill to reach cell-phone coverage and make the call for help. A long and traumatic recovery ahead of her, worse news was yet to come when a scan of her neck revealed some lesions in C2 & C3 spine that led to a diagnosis of stage three multiple myeloma. Due to her complex injury, treatment was challenging and resulted in multiple stays at Christchurch’s Ranui House apartments, a fully-equipped facility, catering for out-of-town patients and their caregivers. Despite Ranui’s 16 two-bedroom apartments and ten one-bedroom apartments, charity providers have realised that with an ever-increasing demand Ranui needs to expand. Plans are afoot to build a new

Amy Russ New Zealand music month may be over, but the music still plays on! The youth event ‘Rock the South’ will return to Nelson’s Theatre Royal on Friday, June 8, with a music gig for all-ages featuring nine of the regions hottest upand-coming youth bands.
‘Rock the South’ is produced by young people, who undertake a range of production and event management roles, and put together a strictly alcohol and drug-free event suitable for 14 – 24 year olds. Regional Smokefreerockquest winners, The Recliners from Nayland College, will be joined by fellow rockquest finalists
Waimea College bands Blind Eye, Acoustic Knot and and Shut Up Connor, and Nelson College for Girls band Equinox. The Recliners took out first place on May 18, with Blind Eye coming second and Equinox taking third place in the band section. Blind Eye scored the ZM peoples choice award, voted by text, on the night. Axel de Maupeolu, team leader of
festivals for Nelson City Council, says events like these are very important, “It is more about youth development than entertainment, it’s behind the scenes. This is youth having the opportunity to put together an event, under the supervision of youth-friendly organisations, and learning the whole process from beginning to the clean-up at the end. It’s a
positive environment, they learn technical skills, behaviour skills, organisational skills, and they get to see what the events industry looks like.” Tickets for ‘Rock the South’ are just $5 and are available from Ticket Direct online, or at the Theatre Royal box office. Door sales, $10, may be available but get in early to avoid missing out.

Sister and brother Lila and Ryan Adams, Brian Shin, and Riley Morrison are all boarders at Garin College and have found a shared passion in the building and using of ‘aquabots’ – underwater remotecontrolled robots. The team has beaten dozens of other competitors to win the Ministry of Inspiration-run, New Zealand overall, competition and are preparing to compete at the world championships in the US state of Massachusetts later this month. To be an aquabot champion you need to design and build an under-water Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) that can pick up objects and place them in different areas – all while on a timer. “Manoeuvrability, stability and speed, that’s what you need,” says Lila. “You need to pick up objects, but still move and be balanced.” Brother Byran prefers designing the ROVS. “It’s a lot of fun playing around with problem solving.” They will have plenty of that when
they arrive in the US in early June to ply their skills against 100 other teams from around the world. In the meantime they have been fund-raising for the trip and recently received a Royal Society grant to help them. The competition is run by the Ministry of Inspiration. Ministry of Inspiration runs programmes throughout the year based on STEAMS education which is an interdisciplinary approach to teaching across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths, and Society (STEAMS). Their mission statement is to ‘bring back the joy of learning by unleashing potential through rich STEAMS experiences to inspire and support innovators of the future.’ Chief Inspiration Officer and NZAquaBots Programme Coordinator, Amy Cornelisen, says, ”these past holidays students had the choice of Art and Engineering, Science of Cooking, as well as MBot Robotics, and Magic the Gathering. All the courses are led by mentored senior students who are passing on their knowledge to younger students while gaining leadership and confidence skills.”

Celebrating their 40th anniversary on Sunday, May 20, members of Nelson’s Rover Car Club gathered in their clubrooms at Higgins Heritage Park in Wakefield’s Pigeon Valley. One of eight national Rover clubs, they established themselves after a core group realised they had enough interest locally to save the trips to Christchurch, until then their nearest club. Sixteen enthusiasts made up the club in the early days with the main aim of the club to foster the maintenance and preservation of Rover cars. Today’s membership stands at
35. Of those founding members, six attended Sunday’s celebration, including chairman Trevor Carston who has the oldest Rover in the club, a 1912 beauty that he restored. “It went very well, a most successful day. We had a wonderful sunny day, lovely lunch and good company,” says club secretary Chris Clark. New members, with or without Rovers, are welcomed, and the focal point of the Nelson club is their clubrooms that are modeled to be a replica of an early garage with a small museum displaying early motoring items. The club hosts an annual Classic Car Day on the first Sunday of September each year.
Bowls Club looking for new life Amy Russ D’arcy St Indoor Bowls club, previously known as Edward St Indoor Bowls Club, has been operating from the Church of Christ hall since 2011. Providing 24 members with an afternoon of casual socialising every Tuesday, the club is the perfect place to meet new friends, have a bit of a laugh, and join in with a very social group. Recently their upgrade of bowls included the purchase of brightly coloured ones, especially for the visually-impaired. A lively group, who also go out for meals a couple of times a year, the club is very warm and welcoming and provide participation for all people, including members who have a disability. Club secretary Maryanne Brown has been a member for seven years and absolutely loves it. “I think it is very needed in our community, because when people retire they sort of think, ‘well what am I going to do now’, and this is perfect.” Robin Ashley, club president, agrees and says it is really good for the community, “A lot of people go crook if we don’t have it. People get lonely and the indoor bowls is a great social interaction, it’s not competitive. We would love to see new members come along, people get older and we are losing the odd one with age, so it would be great to get numbers up and meet new people.” The group meet at the end of D’arcy St every Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm. Cost is $3 per week with an annual membership of $5. Contact Robin Ashley 5443116.

Newborns travel safe Ten of our newest residents will be travelling in safety and comfort after Ma’s Place assigned them brand-new capsules bought with a grant from St Andrew’s Trust. Ma’s Place is an organisation providing a safe space for mothers and young families, to connect and share their journeys of parenthood. A fun and friendly community of families they share in fun activities, cooking, fitness and building strong relationships. Carol Marshall from Ma’s Place says they’re also grateful for Baby
on the Move supplying the carseats at a reduced price. “This grant has enabled us to assist families to keep their babies safe without them having to spend money on a newborn capsule,” says Carol. The long-standing and effective St Andrew’s Trust is committed to empowering families to enhance the well-being of children and families.

Strong start for new-look rallies
‘Meet & Geek’ launched at library Amy Russ On Thursday, June 7, the Tasman District Library will be launching their new ‘Meet & Geek’ social group. Each month the group will host a get-together where new and exciting graphic novels, DVDs and books will be shared and discussed. As well as the discussions, they will enjoy watching new movies and TV series, playing tabletop games and getting to know other like-minded in-

dividuals. The focus and activities of the group will be decided collaboratively with attendees. Digital Services Library Assistant, Sophus Glasgow, says, “this is a social group for adults with an interest in geeky subjects and activities. Whether you are an anime or manga fan, if you love science fiction, or you are a keen game boarder, if you like to geek out, and want to meet others with with similar interests to share your passion, then this is the group for you.”

Sophus says the aim is to connect people with shared interests with each other and with what the library has to offer. “Sessions will start with sharing new titles and materials that may interest members. Afterwards the group will try a board game or watch a film and generally geek out together.” ‘Meet & Geek’ meets on the first Thursday of the month, from 5.15pm to 6.45pm, at Richmond Library. It is free, and all are welcome.

Amy Russ On Sunday, May 27, the first rally day of the new revitalised Murchison Pony Club was held at the Murchison Show grounds. Rally coordinator and head coach, Colette Barrow, says it was a fabulous day with “a good turnout of keen young riders. They enjoyed a fun-filled rally, learning some important horse mastership, like grooming our horses, which not only make them look good but promotes healthy skin, improves blood flow and, most importantly, it ensures great bonding time with our equine friends. After a shared lunch with the new riders, their parents and some familiar past members, all the riders and siblings enjoyed a scavenger hunt, collecting up pieces of nature, horse shoes, feathers and even a few lolly treats.” The club caters for all young riders aged 24 and under, and Colette intends to hold monthly rallies to provide riders with fun equestrian learning activities, summer camps, treks and gymkhana days which will foster the rider’s confidence and riding abilities, which in turn, will hopefully encourage these young riders to join into club team competitions that are held within the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast areas.

Quality Homes that reflect individual style
Tasman Homes (Nelson) Ltd is a boutique building company which builds quality new homes that reflect your individual lifestyle; it will work with your plans or team you up with a designer. Tasman Homes has three ‘P’s’ it works hard on. “Firstly it’s people; having a good team who work well together is really important to us and for our clients,” says owner Garry Nott. “We currently have an awesome, friendly team who are a good mix of apprentices and qualified staff. Secondly, we focus on the process; we want the building experience to be enjoyable for our clients, so we meet them onsite to determine what the problems could be, how it can be cost-effective, and so on. We also have an online portal they can access which breaks down every aspect of the build. Finally, it’s all about providing a quality product which, as certified builders, Tasman Homes can guarantee!”

Why we exist —
Raising the standards We believe all kiwis deserve to work with builders of the highest standard. NZCB membership is unique in that it has always required trade qualification as a bare minimum. Our reputation is built on our knowledge, skills and expertise. It’s the principle we were founded on and is still our driving force today.

From its inception in 1998, NZCB has always strived to raise standards across the building industry. It has also always required its members to hold a formal building trade qualification, which means that every NZCB member has completed an apprenticeship and therefore suitably qualified in carpentry. NZCB remains the only building trade association in New Zealand with this requirement. More than 700 builders came together in Rotorua on 25-26 May to celebrate the 20th anniversary of NZCB. NZCB Chief Executive Grant Florence says this is a timely opportunity to look back at how significantly the industry has changed in just two decades, as well as to address the challenges ahead including the looming skills shortages and the implications of this on build quality. As part of its commitment to trade qualification as a way of assuring its member builders are highly skilled, NZCB established ITAB in 2003, which delivers the industry’s most comprehensive apprentice training. It also encourages member builders to take on apprentices, supports the Apprentice Scholarship Trust, and runs an annual NZCB Appren-
tice Challenge, the final of which is held at the Association’s annual Conference. “While the Government has recently introduced a fees-free policy that also applies to trade training, enrolment numbers in apprenticeship schemes have not grown in the first five months of this year. This highlights the active role the industry as a whole needs to continue to play in building the pipeline of skilled tradies,” says Mr Florence. As well as providing its members with ongoing skills development, NZCB also delivers a range of services designed to not only help builders but also for the benefit of consumers. This is best illustrated by its introduction of a new industry-leading building guarantee ‘Halo’ in 2016, which applies on a mandatory basis to any building project over $30,000 that is undertaken by an NZCB member builder. The most comprehensive building guarantee currently available in New Zealand, Halo stacks up well against other building guarantees in a recent Consumer NZ comparison. As well as its strong financial backing (underwritten by Lloyd’s), it is independently managed, which ensures there’s no conflict of interest in the management of claims.

Whether you are building a new property or renovating or redecorating an existing one, the team from Enterprise Painting and Decorating can help make it look fantastic. They recognise that to attain the professional finish you are after, you need to get the foundations right first, and that’s why you should call in their experienced, professional team. Their plasterboard stopping team will ensure that new plasterboard and recently stripped walls are prepared properly, before the painters and/or wallpaperers get to work. They have a team who can take care of all interior and exterior projects, but if you are a bit of a DIYer and want to tackle the painting yourself, they seriously recommend that you consider getting the professional plasterers in first, to avoid being disappointed with the end results. Plastering is a tricky business, and it’s often not until the paint goes on that imperfections will show. Enterprise Painting and Decorating has been providing expert service in the Nelson Tasman region for many years. To arrange your obligation free quote, call Bruce on 0274302742.

Richmond’s Riding for Disabled (RDA) held their second holiday programme over the recent school break. Run over three days, RDA equine assistant Sarah Nalder says more than 20 children seized the opportunity to attend for anywhere from a half day to all three days. “It’s great to see the kids progress, some of them go from being a complete newbie to rising to the trot over the course of the programme,” says Sarah. The ponies still get a break, with the first week of
the holidays spent out at holiday homes. “It just means the ponies get a rest from constant therapy riding and it also gives them some extra fun to go somewhere different,” says Sarah. “And it raises awareness for the RDA by having them out at various people’s places and allows people to see how cool our ponies are.” They’re brought back on site for the second week of the holidays when the RDA welcomes children to learn varying aspects of pony care. Each half-day costs $50 per child and follows the same
routine. Initially they learn to catch the ponies from the paddock before grooming and partaking in lead work. Next comes the tacking-up phrase before the highly anticipated riding lesson that culminates in a trek around the farm. “I’ve learnt a lot, it’s been really fun,” says Alexandra Minnis. The RDA hope to continue the programme during term holidays and is grateful to the dedicated team of volunteers without whom the programme couldn’t run. “Everybody here does it to see the big smiles at the end of every day. It’s so rewarding,” says Sarah.
The Nelson/Tasman Cancer Society held a family fun day at Teapot Valley camp, on Sunday April 29, for families where a parent or caregiver has, or has had , cancer. Six families attended and had a lot of fun enjoying the activities on offer including a zipline flying fox, mini jeeps, a climbing wall and a bouncy pillow. Cyndy Smith, Cancer Support coordinator, says that this is part of the Cancer Society outreach to families affected by cancer. “Where a parent or carer still caring for children at home has cancer, it adds another level of stress in the situation. Our goal is to provide some time-out where people can relax as well as just enjoy normal family activities,” says Cyndy. Each school holidays an activity is organised, so that families have a chance to come together and get
to know each other around a focus of having some fun activities for the children. Another activity is planned for the upcoming July school holidays. Paul Shutte, Director of Teapot Valley Christian Camp, says, “It was great hosting the Cancer Society Families Fun Day this year. We value the opportunity to be part of a day where families can connect and share experiences while enjoying our facilities and activities in a safe, supporting community.” The Cancer Society provides a range of support services, including information, support groups, access to counselling, support grants, and transport to hospital appointments. Any families who are currently affected by cancer, and would like to know more about the Cancer Society’s services, can contact the office on 5391137 or Cyndy on 0272580075 / cyndy@ cancernelson.org.nz.
Full credit to Mayors Richard Kempthorne and Rachel Reese and the majority of both our Councils for showing courage, leadership and long term thinking over the Waimea Community Dam. It has been known for over 30 years that we are using more water than the river can provide. Water has been rationed each summer but it is not enough. We also know that climate change and our growing population is going to make it worse. We have had 12 years of study, submissions, public meetings, independent reports and expert
research. These have shown that the best way to improve water quality, increase minimum summer flows, secure water for future housing, and to grow our horticultural industries is the Waimea Community Dam. It would be easy for Nelson City Council to ignore the issues with the Waimea River and pretend it is just the Tasman District Council’s problem. That would be dishonest. Nelson draws significant volumes of water for town water supply from the Roding River that feeds into the Waimea catchment. When you are part of the problem, you need to be part of
the solution. Nelson’s contribution also sends a powerful positive signal that our city understands our interdependence with our rural hinterland. Nelson’s contribution of $5 million sits alongside $27 million from Tasman District (part funded by a $10 million interest free Government loan), and $38 million from Waimea Irrigators (part funded by a $22 million concessionary Government loan) and a $7 million Government grant. There is no perfect way of sharing such costs but this is as fair as we will get. The naysayers would have our

community write off $5 million already spent on investigations, design and consenting and walk away from the $39 million in Government support. The weakness in their argument is they have presented no credible alternative. The ‘do nothing’ option means ignoring serious river health issues. Nelson and New Zealand needs to grow our exports to keep our economy strong. There is a strong global demand for our quality apple, wine, kiwifruit, hops and berry fruit products. Storing winter’s surplus water to help these industries grow is a no brainer.
The next step for this project is resolving legal access to 9.6 ha of public conservation land in the remote Lee Valley. DOC has previously agreed to this as part of the dam resource consent involving a $2 million biodiversity package. I will be working with the Tasman District Council and West Coast-Tasman MP Damien O’Connor to help facilitate a local bill through Parliament to do this. This is about Councils and MP’s working together to solve a difficult problem and securing a better future for our economy and environment. Advt.

Strong play from division five teams Wednesday, May 30, division 5 teams played at Saxton Field, following their previous week’s cancelled games. Waimai United boys dominated play on Wednesday night, winning 18 - 0 against Tasman White, for round five of the hockey season. But the Tasman boys held their heads up high and played hard until the final whistle. The Tasman girls fought well
against the Tasman Black side, with Tasman Black winning 5 – 2. The Federal Ferns made amends and came away with a win, 3–1, against their fellow club team, Federal Raptors. There were no senior club games at Saxton Field, due to Queen’s Birthday weekend. Play will resume as normal this week.

Ladies relish Waimea squash lessons Wednesday nights at Waimea Squash is reserved for the very popular social league, catering for players of any ability and experience. It’s been proving a great forum for learners to try squash in a fun and organised atmosphere, and to watch the guns battle it out against each other. Last week
marked the half-way point of the eight week competiton, with the two leading teams playing each other. It was an evenly fought battle, but in the end Pink team (Liam Gale, Kate Swanson, Nicola Pilkington, Jaxon Palmer-Bensemann) managed to beat Purple Team (Jayden Friend, Susan Aitken, Dave and
Kirsty Heyward) and they now lead the points table 248 to 244. But it’s very close at this point in time, Blue and Yellow teams are not far behind on 239 points each, followed by Green on 238 points. Lower placed Red, Orange, and White teams know they have some work to do, and will be dan-
gerous in coming weeks. Meanwhile Sunday’s ladies coaching clinic at Waimea is proving popular. Aimed toward new and beginner players, sessions focus on learning the basic shots, technique, court positioning, and playing a few fun games. It is run by Waimea’s qualified coach Susan
O’Connell, one of the top female squash players in the region. Participants have described the sessions as an enjoyable learning experience, as well as a great way to exercise on a Sunday afternoon. Susan commented that she’s pleased at how quickly some of the participants have picked up the basics of squash.

Velodrome stages first winter race The first open track cycling carnival to be held on the Saxton Velodrome was run by the Tasman Wheelers Cycling Club on Saturday, May 26. The organisers were very pleased with the event and Nelson’s sunshine helped to make this a great showcase for local velodrome cycling. This was NZ ‘s first-ever winter outdoor velodrome carnival race series and the Tasman Wheelers Cycling Club organisers are planning to stage bigger and better events in the summer. The day’s events included five exciting open events with special carnival races such as Scratch races, the Keirin and the Miss ’n Out. The A Grade events were dominated by the Wheeler’s flying machine Kaio Lart, identified as one of NZ’s young, great track racing talents. Brett Grimwood showed great form and displayed some of his experienced track cycling skills to take out many top three placings. The B grade event winners were very competitive with major placings see-sawing. Roger Bates, Lisa Mann, Marty Campbell, Phillip Reardon and Charlotte Grimwood often battled it out up to the finishing line.

Almost 70,000 Kiwis are diagnosed every year with skin cancer. It affects people of all ages, and early detection is essential, which is why a skin cancer consultation with Skin Institute could be the most important appointment you make. Mature cricketer off to worlds Emily Beaumont Richmond’s Mason Robinson has been selected in the 16-man squad for the New Zealand over50s cricket side, the “Greycaps”, to compete in the inaugural over-50s world cup in Sydney from late November. Featuring eight international teams, the world cup schedule is considered demanding with nine 45-over games in 15 days. Mason stamped his mark when the team first assembled together in Nelson during February for a
three-match series against a touring Australian over-50s side. Cyclone Gita affected the series, with one match rained out, but the two sides each won one of the remaining games in two closely fought contests. Mason was a star of the series, performing strongly as a wicketkeeper and batsman, scoring a defiant 59 in the first match and effecting several exceptional stumpings over the two matches. “It certainly got the ball rolling and sets a goal now to do us proud at the world cup,” says Mason.
A pair of young Richmond basketballers are one step closer to representing their country. Waimea College students Josh Book and Jay Marsh have been named in the New Zealand under-15 boys national basketball squad after a selection camp last April. Basketball New Zealand’s high-performance manager, Leonard King, says the players named have earned their
spots after successfully showing they have emerging skill and talent to the national coaches. “I trust that all of the athletes are excited to be formally announced, this is the next step in the pathway to representing New Zealand.” Leonard says all squad members will be observed and evaluated at the 2018 U17 and U15 National Championships, and a final team se-

Sunday. Joseph Clatworthy, Jayden Hawks and James O’Malley were next, followed by the first woman, Megan Southwick. Kate Southwick and Clare Weyers were close for the minor placings in the short race. A small, enthusiastic field contested the micro-race for 5-12-yearolds. Ollie Keen and Joseph Cameron were separated by only a second at the finish. The biggest round of the applause went to 5-yearold Ryan Cameron, the youngest competitor to take part. The Nelson Tri Club is currently in its winter break before multisport events in the spring. Results of Sundays’s race, together with the triathlon and sea swim calendar for next summer, are on the club website, www.nelsontriclub. co.nz.

Manawatu athlete Will O’Connor came to Nelson and ran away with first place in race three of the Shoe Clinic Brooks Duathlon Series at Rabbit Island on Sunday, May 20. Recent rain left parts of the course soggy, but the trails held up to give exciting courses for the 90 competitors. Racing over seven stages of a 1.6km run course and 6km bike course, O’Connor led over the opening run leg, but had to work hard to retain his lead on the first bike section over a large group of athletes who formed a drafting bunch behind him. As successive stages ticked away, the field began to spread, and O’Connor extended his lead to win in 1 hour 13 minutes 25 seconds. Glenn Lilley and Dave Keen made a real race of
it for second, separated by three seconds on the line, while a minute further back, Matt Newberry sprinted to the finish to head off Stu Hodgkiss by only one second. The women’s race was competitive, with race two winner Fran Harris eventually prevailing over Cheryl Young and Carol Cooper, with Florence McNabb close behind. Luke Clatworthy opted for the five-stage option, after winning the long race in the second event of the series a fortnight ago. He ran away with the win by six minutes from Rod Harrhy, Josh Barber and Brendon Crequer. Megan Coltman took the women’s section from Tanya Bottomley, Hannah Price and Karen Price. Bailey O’Malley followed up from race two, winning the short, threestage section again on

Winter fishing Nikki Fisher Most people have started winding down from the summer fishing season, we aren’t most people though. Winter fishing is my favourite! Beautiful calm days, cold frosty mornings turning into stunning sunny afternoons. The autumn weather has been very unsettled and I am looking forward to the calmness of the winter months, watching the weather forecast all week only for it to turn to custard each weekend lately has been making me one grumpy fisher in need of my ‘Vitamin Sea!’ Over winter we tend to launch at Nelson or Okiwi Bay and head up to the deep water off D’Urville Island where we target kingfish, snapper and this year we are hoping to get out deeper for some hapuka. We use a range of techniques and baits including slow and speed jigging, also have some flip-

per jigs to try out as I have not got the speed jigging technique mastered yet. We also ensure to take some squid and soft baits and try to catch some blue cod and gurnard on the way home – these fish always taste stunning but even more so if you vacuum pack before freezing. Nothing better than after a long day on the water to come home and cook up a feed of gurnard fresh – it only requires light seasoning and just melts in your mouth. I like to cook my fish in a little coconut oil as opposed to butter as the coconut oil has a lower melting temp and a high smoke point so will get your fish beautifully golden without burning. Enjoy your winter fishing and remember to keep an eye on our facebook page – Dawnbreakers Fishing Club for photos, tips, tricks and events right throughout the year.
