Kei rāhui te hoko motokā ki te rori o Salisbury Headline in English: Salisbury Rd car sales could be banned. Waimea College principal Scott Haines is backing a proposal to ban car sales from Salisbury Rd and create drop-off pick-up zones outside the school, saying the move

would dramatically improve traffic safety for students. Scott contacted the Tasman District Council with his concerns about traffic safety issues outside the school earlier this year. Last week, council agreed to start public consultation on three key proposed chang-

Kei te hiahia mātou ngā Remana Headline in English: We want lemons. Rachel Orr’s real fruit ice-creams are such a hit she’s turned a part time side-business into a full time gig, but she’s missing one key ingredient -- lemons. You see, among Rachel’s more popular icecream is a lemon flavour. Usually she is inundated with lemons to wash, bash and prepare for her ice-cream, but this year she’s a little short and is putting the word out for homegrown lemons. And she’s even willing to swap them for one of her famous ice-creams. “I’d be happy to give an ice-cream voucher for some lemons,” she says. “I’m desperate.” Rachel’s “Get Real Fruit Ice-cream” cart, was built in Richmond and Hope and is usually parked at Tahuna Beach. “We get so busy in summer, we’ve been there for three years now and it’s such a great vibe down there.” Rachel says she needs the lemons now because she’s far too busy in the summer to process them. Anyone with lemons that they’d be willing to donated to Rachel can call her on 544 5618 and she’d be thrilled to come and pick them up.

Val Andrews, Richmond. “I agree with that, it makes it hard for people to come and pick up kids, but seeing as I don’t drive I don’t think I should have any complaints.”

Cedric MacAdam, Waimea West. “Yeah, I just think it’s a public area, it’s around the schools, but I also think the TDC should look at making a space available to sell cars and then people can park off road.”

Salisbury Rd car sales could be banned FROM PAGE 1 College and three P2 drop off-pick up spaces on Salisbury Rd outside Waimea Intermediate, are also included in the public consultation which was notified on Saturday. Scott says the college approached council about the changes after a student was knocked off her bike by a car outside the school. He says the driver had their “line of sight restricted by a camper van with a ‘for sale’ sign in the window parked just outside the school”. “We wrote to them after we had one accident and three near-misses out here on Salisbury Rd,” Scott says. “There are four schools in close

proximity on Salisbury Rd with well in excess of 2000 students and hundreds of staff so it’s just about providing safe and legitimate access for everyone.” Although Scott concedes the proposed changes may not please everyone, he hopes that people understand that the safety of school children is par-

amount. Scott says the four schools are delighted with the proposed changes which were formulated after they met on-site with the council. “The mayor and three of the staff came down and we had follow-up meetings with the council and all the other schools concerned so that’s been really pleasing.”

Council activity planning officer Daryl Page says the proposed changes will first need to go through the public consultation process which was notified this week. The final proposals will be discussed by council at a meeting on September 22. Council also approved plans for streamlining the process for changing traffic-controlling devices such as give way signs, parking restrictions and no stopping lines. Presently, council is required to change a by-law to make any changes but Daryl says they will be implementing a new system that will allow the changes to be made through a council resolution process.

Simon Bloomberg The Tasman District Council was in damage control last Thursday when it promised to review the controversial Mapua Shed 4 fence and apologised for an unauthorised $493,000 budget blowout on the Shed 4 project. The fence was being built to separate tenants in Mapua’s Shed 4 complex from a rival cafe and also provide security for gas bottles and recycling bins servicing tenants of Shed 4. However, the Mapua community objected strongly to the fence, which mayoral candidate Kit Maling labelled as “petty and vindictive”, prompting council to investigate alternatives that did not impact on neighbouring retailers. “We would be very happy for that to be done,” mayor Richard Kempthorne told councillors while deputy mayor Tim King said “I’m sure staff have got the message to look at the fence”. Mapua and District Community Association member Graeme Stradling had earlier suggested installing an

Shed 4 development following revelations of a massive and unauthorised overspend. Led by an open and honest statement by chief executive Lindsay McKenzie, council apologised for the budget blowout at Mapua and not reporting it earlier. “For all of that, I apologise personally to the council and on behalf of the organisation.” Lindsay gave an undertaking that “this is a one-off and under my watch it won’t happen again”. Council later discussed the staff accountability issues relating to unauthorised overspend behind closed doors. Richard also gave an undertaking that this “wouldn’t happen again” and told the meeting, “I need to take my part in the responsibility as well and say ‘yes this was a process that was suboptimal because of the lack of reporting’.” Council voted to fund the budget blowout at the Mapua Wharf precinct through income from selling forestry land at Slippery Rd, and by bringing forward next year’s budget for landscaping at the wharf.

Council passed a resolution “to investigate the location of gas bottles and recycling material bins for Shed 4 with a view to moving the fence at the northern end of the building back towards Shed 4 building...”. The resolution stated that the changes had to be “subject to council’s legal obligations and best practise being considered”. Construction of the partly constructed 1.7-metre fence had already been put on hold after council stopped any further spending on the Mapua Wharf

Waimea College will be cultivating curiosity at the Light Nelson exhibition that kicks off on Friday. A group of 12 students, led by their electronics teacher Drew McGlashen, are creating an interactive exhibit that plays on the creation of sound through light. The exhibit includes different sections with a number of light dependant resistors that create varying sounds depending on the amount of light that filters through. The group have dedicated class time, Wednesday afternoons, and now their weekend to finish the exhibit. But year 11 electronics student James Bradley says its .co.nz been a whole lot of fun. “I was walking past and saw sawdust flying everywhere and Mr McGlashen drilling holes and thought it was intriguing so I just joined in and haven’t left since. “I love putting all the elements together, it’s been a lot of fun and I’ve even learnt to

Drew says the idea came from the school’s Make A Brick fundraiser and while he designed it, the students have been doing most of the work. “It’s been great to see everyone getting involved, we’ll have students walking by between classes and they’ll ask what it is out of curiosity and next minute they’re joining

Orphanage Stream stormwater works complete

Kate Russell

A five-month long stormwater upgrade at Orphanage Stream was completed last week. Starting in February, the project involved upgrading the stormwater infrastructure and building a flood detention bund next to Main Rd Stoke, which will minimise the potential for damage to downstream properties in heavy rain events by using the Saxton Field area as storage. A Nelson City Council spokesperson says there were no major hold-

ups, and with a construction cost of $275,000, the project saw 1300m3 of fill imported to use for earth bunds and it offers a storage capacity of 39,000m3 of flood flow. The project is part of Nelson City Council’s programme to endorse the upgrading of streams and rivers in the city, where the risk to people and assets is high. Council will undertake upgrade works to cater for future one-in-100 year flows. Some final landscaping work is due to take place in the next two weeks.

WINE WINNERS: Seifried Estate won two top awards at the San Francisco International Wine Competition last week. The Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc was judged the Best Sauvignon Blanc while the Winemakers Collection Sweet Agnes Riesling 2015 won the Best Late Harvest White. Founder and viticulturist to the family winery, Hermann Seifried credits the success to the warm summer temperatures during the growing season and close attention to detail in the vineyard producing exceptional grapes. MAYOR AGAINST SCHOOL CLOSURE: Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is asking the Minister of Education Hekia Parata to reconsider plans to close Salisbury School. Richard says he wants the minister to visit the Richmond special needs, all-girls school to gain a better understanding of the school’s proposal for their future and to support their efforts to provide a way forward. He says investment in the school and the student’s lives “will certainly be paid back many times over in the future, financially, socially and morally”. TRESPASSED FROM MALL: A man has been trespassed from the Richmond Mall after police and fire service investigated an unusual odour coming from a cubicle in the men’s toilet opposite Farmers on June 21. A cleaner felt dizzy and became ill after entering the toilet and noticing the strange odour. Police subsequently found and spoke to the man, who is known to police, but Senior Constable Glyn Cunningham says no charges were laid.

The fourth of July isn’t particularly significant for Kiwis, but for anyone who loves Hot Rods and American muscle, it’s the perfect opportunity to get their pride and joy out of the shed. Nelson’s Independence Day Cruise was organised by Nelson City Rod and Custom Club and saw participants gather at Club Waimea on Sunday morning, then make their way to Upper Moutere before heading to Brightwater Motor Inn for lunch via Mt Heslington Rd. “It’s just a good excuse to get the cars out,” says organiser Barry Hefford. “And because it’s the middle of winter there’s not generally a lot else on.” Amongst those taking part in the Sunday cruise was Dave Verry, president of the Nelson City Rod and Custom Club. Dave’s 1934 three window Ford Coupe was imported from Canada about two years ago, with the only major work under Dave’s ownership being a change to right hand drive. “The laws in New Zealand to get cars on the road are quite difficult, so it took longer than it should to get it road legal,” says Dave. Which is why it’s only in the last three weeks that Dave has actually been able to get behind the wheel of his coupe, although now that it’s road legal Dave says it will come out of the shed much more often. Dave’s passion for American cars has included owning a ’34 Tudor Sedan, a ’41 Pickup as well as a couple of Mustangs. “They’re just cool cars, something different to the norm, all my cars are different, Try Widex’ s newest hearing devices, called UNIQUE I’ve got quite a few really and they’re all someENJOY SUPREME SOUND IN ANY ENVIRONMENT thing special,” says Dave. “A lot of people don’t use their old cars much, Automatically adapts to your environment - Speech is heard clearly, even in the most deman they get them out perhaps every three or four group situations - Improved telephone conversation - Comfort, clarity and natural sound in Plus months so a run like this does get a lot of them Try Widex’ s newest hearing devices, called devices, UNIQUE called UNIQUE, We needsituations 6 ‘guinea pigs’ to trial Widex’s newest hearing Noisy andPlus Windy out of the shed.” >At FREE Hearing Test bloom™ we provide: ENJOY SUPREME SOUND IN ANY ENVIRONMENT risk free for an initial 7 days. Waimea College’s jazz musicians hit all the right notes again, winning the major awards at the Nelson Youth Jazz Festival held at The Boathouse in Nelson. The college’s senior combo of Stuart Gordon, Teem Detdecho, Peter Hamilton, Brandon Hart, Leah Miles and Louise Davis were named the Best Combo and Best Overall while Stuart won Best Piano at the festival last month. Louise also won Highly Commended Vocals with Teem received the Highly Commended Guitar. The combo continued Waimea’s remarkable record at the festival, winning the Best Combo Award for the fourth consecutive year and the Best

Overall for the third straight year. The Nelson Jazz Club-organised festival has been running for the last five years and attracts the top combos from schools around Nelson and Tasman. “We had to play four pieces in a 20 minute set, so we’d spent a lot of time rehearsing,” Louise says. “We’ve been practising as a band once a week and also on our own to make sure we were ready.” Music teacher and jazz enthusiast Martin Emo says the festival was a great opportunity for the young musicians to play before an audience. Martin says the combo’s members were all gifted musicians who he had “spotted in music classes” and given the opportunity to develop their talents.

“I was gigging at their age so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be doing the same thing and the festival gives them that chance,” Martin says. Martin says the combo had benefitted from another opportunity when they attended workshops at the Wellington International Jazz Festival earlier this month. The students attended a workshop with international stars, including American Grammy-nominated vocalist Karrin Allyson, and went to a show featuring Wayne Shorter who has played alongside Miles Davis. Waimea College also had a junior combo of Johnathan Matheson, John Jensen, Matthew Hitchens Zak Milson and Jacob Saunders at the Nelson Youth Jazz Festival.

Roger buzzing about career shift Simon Bloomberg Richmond turf manager Roger Hart had his final day on the job at Nelmac last Friday, signalling the end to 33 years of sowing and mowing grass on parks and reserves around the Tasman district. But Roger won’t be letting the grass grow under his feet insisting “I’m not retiring, I’m just making a lifestyle change” as he plans to expand his beekeeping hobby into a fulltime business. Roger says he’s been playing around with bees for the last five years “so I thought I’d give it a try full-time”. Roger started his career in turf management when he left Waimea College and joined the Richmond Borough Council’s parks and reserves department. After an interlude owning the Rainbow Takeaways in Stoke, he returned to the borough council in 1986, working as the Tasman districts turf manager for the last 20 years. “I remember the very first job I did on the council was digging a hole at the Richmond Cemetery. The work was quite varied back in the early days, so I also planted trees when it was too wet to mow the grass and worked in the nursery. “We also used to do most of the mowing by hand. We had a tractor with a gang mower but the rest of it was done by hand - there was no

such things as a ride-on.” “It’s a lot more specialised today with lots of new technology and equipment. There are all new varieties of grass now and drainage and irrigation is a big thing - we’ve come a long way since we used to irrigate Jubilee Park by piping water out of a well and flooding the ground.” Roger says one of the best things about being a turf manager for council has been helping develop new sports grounds and parks and then seeing so many people enjoy using them. He helped develop Jubilee Park South, Avery Field and Lord Rutherford Park, “spending a week with five or six guys picking up stones from Jubilee before sowing the grass”. “It’s a real buzz seeing the sports grounds all marked up and green. It gives you a lot of satisfaction, especially when you have helped develop the ground.” Although Roger says he is fond of all of the Tasman district’s 580 reserves and 40 hectares of sports grounds, and even its cemeteries, he admits Avery Field and Easby Park are his favourites. “Avery is a really nice development with a nice setting and I like the way it links Tasman and Nelson, and Easby is fantastic the way it runs up into Dellside Reserve. Doing my job for the last 33 years really makes you realise how lucky we are to live here.”

Mid-winter gala draws a crowd Jessie Johnston It had the clear skies and fun-filled atmosphere of a summer fair but this year Brightwater School decided to host their gala and auction, mid-winter. After changes were made to the gala committee as parents left the school, and with too short notice to make the necessary arrangements for their usual March gala, the committee began planning for the annual event to take place in July. The added bonus of choosing mid-winter was a reduced chance of clashing with other major events on the community calendar, as well as providing families with a fun day out during one of the more uneventful months. “It was amazing, everyone just said it was a great gala, the best gala. We also had a big change around in how we laid out the stalls which worked well and the live music was amazing,” says committee member Chantelle Gibson. The profits from this year’s annual fund-raising gala will be going towards new astro turf for one of the school’s courts, as well as a new look for their junior playground. With the total sitting at around $26,000, Chantelle says this year was probably up on last year’s event, making a second mid-winter gala something to seriously consider.

Mall shopper’s luck returns Richmond’s Janice Reed hadn’t won anything since she was a contestant in the famous television game show, The Golden Shot in England in 1967. However, Janice’s luck returned last Friday when she won $1000 worth of vouchers in the Richmond Mall’s popular Shop, Scratch and Win competition for shoppers. Shoppers who spent $120 in a single transaction in any of the mall’s stores, excluding supermarkets, were eligible to enter the competition which ran between June 6 and 26.

“I was overwhelmed when I found out I’d won,” Janice says. “When I got the email from the mall, I thought I must have left something behind there. “The last thing I won was a silver plate and china set when I was on The Golden Shot. It was the silver prize and the man who won the gold prize got a 26-track tape recorder.” Shop, Scratch and Win prizes also included free coffees, mall vouchers and spot prizes of vouchers or product from retailers.

Young orchardists show their skills in contest Simon Bloomberg

Riwaka’s Tom Dalziel pipped Wai-West Horticulture’s Ralph Bastian and Rowan Inwood from Hoddys Orchard in the Nelson’s Young Fruit Grower competition held on Friday. Competitors started with a day-long competition at Hoddy’s Orchard in Hope where they completed a series of practical and theoretical challenges on pest identification, block analysis, first aid, irrigation, calibration, staff HR and chainsaw safety. The competition concluded at the Headingly Centre on Friday night when the contestants had to give a speech on the topic of ‘if I owned an orchard, how would I attract young workers and retain them’. Tom, 27, who works as an orchard supervisor at Thomas Bros, won a cash prize of $1500 and an all-expenses paid trip to represent Nelson at the National Young Grower of the Year in Pukekohe on July 20. “The Young Fruit Grower competition showcases and celebrates our industry’s top young talent each year,” competition coordinator Andrew Kininmonth says. “We’re very fortunate to have such loyal and passionate sponsors who support the event and assist in the development of our industry’s future leaders by testing the contestants knowledge and skills.”

Andrew says the competition “is really important because it benchmarks the competitors amongst their peers”. It is also a good opportunity for them to “do something different and meet other young people involved in the industry”. The Young Grower of the Year is an annual competition run by Horticulture New Zealand to select the finest young fruit or vegetable grower in the country. The winners from five regional events go forward to contest the final.

Lorna celebrates her 100th birthday at Mall Simon Bloomberg Nelson's Lorna Moffitt enjoyed a double celebration of her 100th birthday last week, first marking the occasion with her family and then four days later enjoying a surprise party when she visited her favourite clothing store in the Richmond Mall. Lorna was born in Wakefield on June 24, 1916, and has only just moved out of her William St home and into Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke. She celebrated her birthday with her family on June 24 and then last Tuesday received a surprise birthday cake from the staff in Black Pepper when she went shopping with her daughter Mary Moffitt, niece Roey Hamilton and daughterin-law Paula Moffitt. Black Pepper store manager Lynne McPhail says she found out that her oldest customer was having her 100th birthday after talking to Mary. She decided to mark the occasion by holding a surprise birthday party and asked Mary to bring her mum into the store the next time she came into Richmond. "I couldn't let this go past with-

Lorna was raised on a raspberry farm near Tapawera and was a home science teacher at Tapawera High School for many years. She married the late Alex Moffitt, who lived on the farm next door, when he returned from World War II in 1943 - they had four children, Adrian, Bruce, Mark and Mary. Lorna says the secret to her longevity was "having a glass

of wine every night" and her children, who, she always tells people "keep me young". However, genetics may also have contributed to Lorna's longevity as her mother Olive, who had eight children, also lived to a 100 before passing away in 1994. Mary says Lorna is a wonderful mother who looked after her children when they were young and not so young. "We all lived with her at various stages and she was always very tolerant," Mary says. "The only rule she had for us was that we had to do our own breakfast dishes."

New menu available now Buonissimo is Richmond’s very own slice of Italy and its getting ready to offer up an even bigger range of traditional Italian cuisine. Owners Stefano and Francesca Nicosia are passionate about bringing the flavours of their culture to the Richmond community and while they are proud to be known for their delicious gelato, the pair are planning on changing their image from ice cream store, to a one stop shop for heavenly Italian food. Stage one of their transformation will see two or three pasta dishes become a permanent part of the menu, including pasta with a simple tomato sauce and other flavours to be decided by seasonal produce, as well as a soup, the first flavour being minestrone, followed by pumpkin and potato. This new menu is available from this Thursday, for either takeaway or

sit down lunch, as well as dinner dining during the Richmond Mall’s late nights, starting Thursday, July 14. From there Stefano and Francesca plan to adopt a bistro style kitchen and grow their menu to include lesser known Italian dishes such as ravioli and gnocchi. The physical look of the store will also be changing with a cabinet dedicated to their pasta’s, salads and lasagna soon to be sitting alongside the gelato in the shop front, while the ultimate goal is to extend the size of the shop and add more seating to accommodate diners. With a lack of Italian dining options in the local area, Stefano and Francesca decided it was up to them to fill the gap and having owned and operated Buonissimo for two years now, felt it was time to expand their business. Buonissimo is keen to cater to local Francesca and Stefano Nicosia are excited to be bringing even more authentic Italian cuisine businesses too, understanding that a to Richmond.

EW Your N r fo agents cElEbratiNg 21 YEarS iN buSiNESS Dale Greaves and the team at Star Trucks International Ltd have a passion for trucks, which makes all the difference to the customer service and products their clients receive. No matter what size vehicle a business may be looking for, from van to heavy haulage, Star Trucks are proud to have something that will suit every transport requirement, their motto being, “if it’s not on the yard then we can source it”. It’s been 21 years since Star Trucks came to Nelson, although back then they were Truck Centre South Island Ltd and were an extension of the company in Tauranga where Dale was sales manager. Being the New Zealand distributor for Western Star Trucks and with marketing to the South Island done via quarterly customer calls, it was decided they needed more representation in the South Island, so Dale and Leanne made the move and started their own company, employing well known local, Graham

Thompson, (Tomo). After forming a relationship with Houston Motors, who were the only other new truck representative in Nelson, Truck Centre South Island took over the franchise for Fuso trucks. It was decided to change the name to Star Trucks International Ltd, becoming the importer for brands from Europe, Japan and the USA. Over the years, Star Trucks has taken on and said goodbye to a number of brands due to changes and compliance requirements throughout the industry. Just recently Star Trucks was once again affected by corporate changes, forcing it to leave behind Fuso and Mercedes-Benz. But when one door shuts, another door opens, this particular door opening into the well known Iveco brand. “Star Trucks was offered the opportunity to be the dealer for Iveco products, so this is an exciting time for us” says Dale. land on Sunday. Chris did the event by himself and completed 21 laps, one more than the nearest team. Event organiser Wayne Pool says more than 500 people had registered to take part in the event, but due to the two-week postponement because of bad weather that number dropped to 430, which was still well up on last year. Wayne says all the competitors combined rode more than 17,000km, enough to travel from Nelson to Athens. Despite the event having a mountainbike element, the

highest point of the course was ironically 22 metres above sea level, while 3.5km on yellow tape marked out the course Many teams took the chance to dress up with Pacman, Where's Wally and various super heroes all making an appearance, which adds to the event says Wayne, who completed three of his laps in a tiger suit. "You have guys like Chris Sharland who go out there and blitz it from the start and then you have mums, dads and kids who are out there doing it for their own goals."

Richmond scored three goals, lost two players to red cards, but could only manage one competition point after a 3-3 draw with Suburbs Reserves on Saturday. Despite their Nelson Bays football league title hopes dwindling, coach Matt Campbell believes the monthlong slump may be coming to an end. “Again we had a bad first 30 minutes but having been down 2-0 we led 3-2 with 10 minutes to go. “It’s a case of getting the guys to start better and switch on.” Matt says the young squad were

“learning through a rough patch” having started the campaign with six straight wins. “The start we had inflated expectations,” he says. “Richmond have always had a young (first) team and these guys are learning and it’s important they do that.” Matt says the team’s comeback on Saturday showed the talent amongst the ranks GETbut it was finding a consistency in the play which was most needed. “We aren’t that far away, if we just TO SPEND focus on eliminating IN-STOREour * own mental errors then we’ll be back to our best.”

Waimea Combined No 8 and captain Jeremy Lordan, front, celebrates his team’s win over St Andrew’s College in his 50th game on Saturday. Photo Jacob Page.

Captain Lordan celebrates 50th with a win Jacob Page Waimea Combined No 8 Jeremy Lordan picked himself up off a muddy Waimea College rugby pitch and smiled. It was nearing the full time whistle and the impressive No 8, safe in the knowledge he had scored a try in what would be a winning effort in his 50th match, looked mightily satisfied. His team beat St Andrew’s College 3425 on Saturday, thanks to some scintillating attacks in the first half and some rugged defence in the second. Jeremy himself praised his forwards and described it as one of the best wins over three seasons with the team. There was no talk of his try post-match only the effort his team had shown on defence. “You’ve got to get up in their faces with the boys and make the big hits right to the end, I love the contact.”

Waimea Combined captain Jeremy Lordan in action on Saturday. Photo Evan Barnes Shuttersport Limited.

The durable captain, who has only missed two games in three seasons, says one of his happiest early memories of rugby was when he was allowed to play tackle for the first time as a junior at Waimea Old Boys. “I was so excited when rugby turned from touch to tackle and I could put the big hits in.” Waimea Combines were superb in the first half against St Andrews. Their forwards gave the backline front -foot ball and fullback Matthew Stevenson showed just how elusive he can be. Matthew scored two tries and set up another with a mixture of speed, fleet of foot and fending off defenders. “Our forwards really muscled-up, we put them under pressure and they didn’t like that,” Jeremy says. Waimea Combined travel to Christcurch to face Lincoln High School on Saturday.

Waimea silver shrug off nCg in netball clash Jacob Page

Waimea College Silver outlasted Nelson College for Girls 23-19 in a see-sawing senior 7 game of netball at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Waimea scored the first four goals and looked the most promising in attack. Neither team looked after the ball in the mid-court and it showed on the scoreboard, with Waimea holding a 5-2 first quarter advantage. NCG's shaky first quarter was quickly put behind them in the second. They dominated possession and, most importantly, treasured it after they earned turnovers. They scored the first six goals after the first break, before Waimea, having seen their three goal advantage turn into a three goal deficit, went on little run of their own to even the game up at 8-8. Nelson goal shoot Hannah Sloane was instrumental in getting her team back in the contest in the second quarter. With the scores locked at 9-9 at the main break, it was Waimea who earned an early two goal advantage. It proved to be an advantage they would not relinquish. The match was of a higher standard in the second half with both teams moving the ball through the court with more cohesion. With both teams earning turnovers, each side tried to get the ball into

NCG had chances to get back into the game but a strong Waimea defence snuffed out the opportunities in the final quarter to ensure victory.

Waimea need win to make semifinal Waimea Old Boys face a must-win game to make the semi-finals of the Nelson Bays division one rugby competition when they travel to Stoke this weekend. Their gritty 26-23 win over Kahurangi at Jubilee Park saw them jump into fifth ahead of a final round showdown with fourth-placed Stoke on Saturday. Coach Mark Milne says the team is fortunate to find itself in the situation and was eager to give it a go.

“We can’t approach it any differently to any of the previous weeks, it’s just nice to be in this position after what has been an upand-down season for us.” Mark says with the number of injuries and amount of rebuilding the club has done in 2016, he believes the outcome of the match will not define their season. “The guys have been going out there and giving it a go even though we’ve been down on numbers, and I’m sure they’ll do

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz the same thing again.” Mark says he was thrilled to see his team get early rewards on the scoreboard for their attacking endeavour. “We played with good structures and got rewards, finally.”

He says a draw would have been a fair result but his team kicked their goals, while Kahurangi struggled. The boot of Luca Roden will no doubt be influential again if Waimea are to have a chance to topple Stoke on what are quickly becoming tricky conditions to play running rugby in as winter takes hold. Tim Coman was immense at the breakdown, while the return of Jeff Lepa added some much-needed grunt to the forwards.

Waimea Old Boys B have received their wake-up call and are now focussing on finishing second ahead of the semi-finals. They were humbled at home 27-3 on Saturday and will now look to regroup ahead of a big clash with Stoke this weekend. The loss saw them drop to third and while a semifinal spot is assured, coach Wayne Bateman says they would like a home semi final. “We have no excuses, Huia wanted it more, they were hungrier than us and beat us to the ball most times. “We’ll have to have a sit down and work out where to improve but we were missing seven first choice guys and six of them should be back this weekend.” Wayne says his team needed a wake-up ahead of playoff rugby and Huia certainly provided it. “We weren’t committed enough at the breakdown, we didn’t drive over the ball and they killed us for most of the game in that area.” There is potential the two teams could meet again in the semifinals so it is important lessons are learnt ahead of a rematch.

Waimea College 10A Netball South Island Junior Secondary Schools Tournament The Waimea College 10A netball team is aiming for a top 10 finish at the South Island Junior Secondary Schools tournament to be held at the Christchurch Netball Centre at Hagley Park from July 11 to 13. Team manager Maree Dohmen says the team has been playing well in the Nelson Senior 3 competition this year and has shown enough good form to suggest they will be competitive in Christchurch. Waimea 10A plays against school and club teams in Senior 3 and had a 23-19 win against Nelson College for Girls 10A and an 18-27 loss to a very good Nayland College 10A. Waimea 10A also had a good start to the season, finishing second in their grade in the Geraldine Hodgson pre-season tournament at the Saxton Field courts. However, Maree acknowledges that the top teams at the South Island junior’s will be hard to beat and Waimea will need to produce their best form to make the top 10. “Six of the girls played in

the Waimea 9A team that finished 15th equal in last year’s South Island juniors which was a good result but we are hoping do better this year. We’ve had quite a good season despite a few disruptions with injuries but, if we play to our potential, I think we could make the top 10 which is our goal.” The South Island junior’s will be a great opportunity for Waimea 10A to play against some of the country’s most talented young players. The tournament has been held in Christchurch for 18 years and has become an important pathway for players, coaches and umpires to develop and improve their skills and abilities. Waimea 10A has a tall attacking end, led by Maree’s daughter Kate who is 1.85m tall and plays goal shoot. She has been well supported this year by goal attacks Annalise Ramsay and Bronte Hall. The mid court is wing attack Christie Gilbert, centre Samantha Hardie, who is also the captain, while

Rebekah Parsons is centre and wing attack. Chanelle Hibberd plays wing defence and goal defence, Zoe Harris is goal defence while Ayla de Jong is goal keep. The team is coached by Karryn Stack. Maree says the team has had great sponsorship from Tuffnell Plumbing who paid for the team’s training tops and Foothold Developments who paid for the team’s hoodies. Waimea 10A will play Avonside Girls, Rangiora High and South Otago High in Pool A games on the first day on Monday before moving to postsection play on Tuesday. Feedback invited on regional landfill proposal

Draft Traffic Control Bylaw 2016

Tasman District Council is proposing a change to how it controls and operates Eves Valley landfill. You are invited to make a submission on the proposal, which would see Nelson City and Tasman District Councils operate a landfill that serviced the whole region, rather than each operating individual landfills. As part of the proposal, the Councils will transfer 50% control of Eves and York Valley landfills to each other. A Regional Landfill Business Unit would be created to run the regional landfill, and would be a controlled by a joint committee of the two councils. The arrangement is intended to reduce our long-term costs and better meet the Councils’ joint aim of reducing waste volumes in the region. To proceed with the arrangement, we are amending our Long Term Plan 2015 – 2025.

The Tasman District Council seeks your view on a new Traffic Control Bylaw. A statement of proposal, the draft bylaw, a summary of information, and submission form is available for viewing on the Council’s website, www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and at the following Council offices and libraries during normal opening hours: • Main Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Service Centre, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka • Golden Bay Service Centre, Junction Street, Takaka • Murchison Service Centre, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison • Tasman District Library, Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Library, Pah Street, Motueka • Takaka Library, Commercial Street, Takaka You are welcome to make a submission on the draft Traffic Control Bylaw 2016. Submissions close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 3 August 2016. The draft bylaw is now available for consultation in accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act 2002.

Find out more: All the detail, including information on the proposal’s impact on capital spending, debt, rates and waste disposal charges is available on our website, www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. You can also view the consultation document at Council service centres and libraries or call in at the public drop-in session at Council’s office in Queen St, Richmond on 11 July, 5.30pm – 7.00pm to discuss the proposal. Make a submission: You can make an online submission at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback or pick up a submission form at Council service centres and libraries. Consultation is open from 4 July – 5 August 2016.

Dog registration If you have a dog aged three months or older you have to register it. Northern Abel Tasman National Park Possum control operation As part of the ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Project Janszoon are planning aerial pest control to protect the Park’s native species from high possum numbers. This pest control is essential for native species recovery and ecosystem restoration. DOC and Project Janszoon intend to apply non-toxic pre-feed cereal baits during the first period of fine weather from 17th July, followed by the application of toxic baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) . Description of the area Part of Abel Tasman National Park, from a line between the Awapoto hut and the Awaroa River mouth, north to Separation Point and Whariwharangi Bay, excluding all catchments into the Wainui Valley. Exclusion zones have been placed around the Totaranui campground, Whariwharangi hut and access points along the coast. During the operation, all tracks within the operational area and the roads east of Pigeon Saddle will be closed until cleared of bait. Method of control Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above areas. The baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2cm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • DO NOT touch bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • DEADLY TO DOGS, do not allow dogs access to animal carcasses Observe these rules wherever you see warning signs placed at public access points in the park. For further information call Senior Ranger Janszoon at the Motueka DOC Office (03 528 1810) or visit the Motueka Office, cnr King Edward and High Streets, Motueka. A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed at the DOC Nelson Visitor Centre, and the Motueka and Takaka Offices, 11am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
