Father’s Day was always going to be an emotional day for June Boyd visiting her husband Basil’s grave in the Richmond Cemetery on Sunday, but it turned to be more heart-wrenching than she could possibly have imagined. June and three of her five chil-
dren, Brooke, Lewis and Charmaine, and her grandson Joshua, stood in silence when they saw Basil’s damaged memorial headstone lying on the ground. First there was a sense of disbelief and then came tears and anger as they gathered with other families in the cemetery in the aftermath of a “disgraceful” act of vandalism that damaged an estimated 70 graves.
There had already been an outpouring of emotion on Friday after seven graves sites had been found damaged. Vandals had kicked over memorial headstones and photos, including one photo of a 16-year-old Richmond girl who tragically died in 2008. But that was just the start as the vandals returned on Saturday night to wreck a further 60 grave sites, including four historical
headstones dating back to March 20, 1903. June says it was an “intensely emotional” day with strangers hugging and consoling each other as they stood among the destruction. She says losing Basil was one of the hardest times in her life and seeing his memorial headstone lying on the ground brought all

‘Sick’ vandals destroy 70 graves in ‘absolutely disgraceful’ attack FROM PAGE 1 those emotions and feelings of loss back. “Every year I wish he was back with me and this just made all the sadness come back. There’s no words to describe how I feel – it’s bad enough coming down here on Father’s Day, but seeing this was devastating.” Police are investigating the vandalism and June says she hopes the people responsible are caught and held accountable. “I can’t believe anyone could do something like this and I want them caught and named and shamed. I want them to pay all the damage and to face all the families they hurt and explain why they did it. It wasn’t the first time that vandals have hit the cemetery, but Patrick Day of G Miller and Sons says it’s easily the worst case of destruction he has seen in 30

damage that’s worst – this has brought back those tragic memories and you can’t repair that.” Patrick says some of the older historical memorial stones would be impossible to repair, “which is
quite sad”. He also says the damage indicates the vandals used considerable force to break some of the headstones. Patrick’s wife Tracey, who has been dealing with the affected
families, says she has never seen so many people grieving in the Richmond Cemetery. “It was so full and everybody there was so upset. We were all devastated and in shock although some of that’s turning to anger now. It’s a such a sacred place and these sick people caused so much hurt. They even smashed the photo of the wee girl - it was heart-breaking seeing it.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says the vandalism is “absolutely disgraceful” and council and police will be doing everything they can to find the “rather sick people that have done this”. Richmond community constable Kyle Abbott says anyone with information on the vandalism should contact the police. Police collected evidence including fingerprints on Sunday and have been conducting covert and overt patrols of the cemetery this week.

Funding for Waimea Dam Simon Bloomberg
A $10million interest-free government loan would be a “game-changer” for the proposed Waimea Dam, reducing the cost of the dam to Tasman ratepayers by an estimated $500,000 a year. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy was in Nelson on Monday to announce the new scheme that enables Crown Irrigation to provide interestfree loans for water storage schemes. The loan scheme is aimed at funding the environmental component of water augmentation projects such as the proposed Waimea Dam. Council is meeting behind closed doors on Thursday to discuss the funding proposal for the $82million dam and Richard says if the newly announced loan “doesn’t get the dam across the line, nothing will”. He says the new interest-free loan, in combination with the government’s $7million grant from the Freshwater Improvement Fund and the $25million capital loan to irrigators, gives the project the financial backing it needs to proceed. “We are in the best place we have ever been as far as funding for the dam is concerned but we still have to have a discussion with the community. “But, if we don’t have more than half of our councillors

It is so clear, we know we have a water shortage in the summer and we have got to do something. “If we hadn’t got the $7million then it would have been a real problem, but to get the $7million plus the $10million is a game-changer. We haven’t had a funding package like this before so it’s looking good.” Nelson MP Nick Smith says, “it would be extraordinary now for council not to proceed”
with the dam. Nick says the government is effectively putting in over $40million toward the dam which illustrates the “importance of the project”. “There’s no other way to deliver the environmental benefits in the lower Waimea River without knee-capping the economy,” Nick says. “The horticulture sector is one of the foundations of our economy and we can’t afford to undermine it - this project is the only realistic way we can improve the environment and grow our economy.”

Pic’s spreads to another new building
Powertalk Waimea Club life member Linda Bergman was honoured for her success at the Powertalk International convention held in Seattle in the US last month. Linda has been a member of the club for over 25 years, was awarded the highest achievement available worldwide within Powertalk, that of Distinguished Communicator. Linda joined three other people in New Zealand and just 36 worldwide who have the award. Linda received the award after years of making a significant contribution to the club and the community.
Brittany Spencer Pic Picot has come a long way from making peanut butter in a concrete mixer in his garage and chasing a roaster full of peanuts down his driveway. The Nelson-based peanut butter maker is expanding once again, moving into a new site that sits on over 5000 square metres opposite Placemakers on Saxton Rd. Currently based across four sites in Nelson, the new site being built by Coman Construction, will incorporate them all with a warehouse, factory, events foyer, offices and an overhead viewing gallery for factory tours. Standing outside the outwards goods warehouse already operating on the new site, Pic is astounded by the size of everything. “It’s quite a statement, it’s humongous, far from what we started with.” What began as a way to make “just a bit of pocket money for the weekend” has now expanded into a business exporting to Australia, the UK, America, China, Singapore and South East Asia, and Holland. But Pic says New Zealand is still their biggest market. “All of this has all been from the fantastic support we get from Nelson, it’s unbelievable really but it’s what we’ve grown to.” The new buildings will be completed by June/ July next year and the team of “picsters” will begin to transfer all the machinery and close down the other sites. “The trick will be to get everything sorted here then shut down the factory, rush down here, plug it all in and get up and going again.”

Scrapping for cash Judene Edgar Only a few years ago scrap metal was a very lucrative business, legally and illegally, with ‘cash for scrap’ schemes around the country as well as spikes in thefts. But tumbling international prices and increasing freight costs have seen the market for scrap metal bottom out, and a 37% increase in abandoned vehicles in the Tasman district in the past year alone, mainly dumped on our river banks and in forestry blocks. Tasman District Council’s control services officer Ross Connochie says “not too many years ago you’d get $300 from a scrap metal dealer, but now they’ll charge you.” Ian from Tasman Parts World says that with the current international price slump there’s simply no overseas market anymore and it’s just not worth it. “My yard is full and there’s a real process to get rid of them,” he says. “If we scrap a car out we’re lucky to get $20 and it might cost us $80 to get it.” Murray Smith from Sims Pacific Metals says they can only
accept cars that have been drained of all fluids – air conditioner gases, fuel and oil – due to the risks associated with flammable materials. “We’re still offering a free dump, but often people can’t be bothered draining them,” says Murray. “Ten years ago light gauge metal from cars, whiteware and corrugated would have been put in the landfill, but now it’s all recycled.” While Sims can directly export heavy gauge metals, once crushed and baled the light gauge metal needs to be transported to Christchurch but, because of the earthquake, freight costs have increased. Korina Kirk, president of the Scrap Metal Recycling Association, has seen a number of layoffs and yard closures since the price slump started in late 2015. “Like any commodity there are price fluctuations, but the price has come down so significantly that it’s become uneconomic for regions.” Nelson Environment Centre manager Karen Driver suggests that “the solution the government could do is to declare
it a priority product, whereby the industry has to implement product stewardship.” End-of-life vehicle ‘product stewardship’ schemes are in place in a number of countries, whereby a levy is paid by the industry that covers the cost of disposal. However, the government haven’t implemented such a scheme due to the historic high value of scrap metal which was seen to incentivise recycling. Ross says, in addition to the environmental and visual impacts, there is also a cost to the ratepayers. Unregistered and unwarranted vehicles can be towed and a $400 fine for littering imposed, as well as an invoice for recovery of costs. However, costs to ratepayers are tracking up. Council’s environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King says, “we spent $13,000 last year, up from $5,000 the previous year – not a lot of money but a big increase.” “Unfortunately, some people go to more trouble ditching them than it would cost them taking it to the refuse centre,” says Ross.

Richmond mates reunited and sailing the world Simon Bloomberg
Two good mates from Richmond have been reunited halfway around the world where they are both crew members on a luxury motor yacht that is sailing around the Mediterranean. Nathan McCrorie and Clint Skelton have known each other for a decade and earlier this year renewed their friendship when Nathan joined his mate on the crew of the T-6 in the US. Clint was already serving as an engineer and helicopter pilot aboard the 49m T-6 and approached Nathan to join the crew as skipper of the motor yacht, which is owned by a New Zealand businessman. “Clint called me a while ago and said, ‘we need a skipper’ and would I be interested, but I wasn’t sure if it would be the right move,” Nathan says. “It was a real ‘do I or don’t I’ because it would mean I’d be away from my kids for a long time, but we worked out a good arrangement and I took the job in March.” Nathan, who was back in Nelson for a month’s leave after his first three-month journey on T-6, says the vessel is an “absolutely stunning” boat to sail and the owners are “amazing”. He’s also enjoying the opportunity to travel around the world and has so far sailed
Nathan McCrorie at the Nelson Marina last month. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. from the US to Europe and then around the Mediterranean where he’s seen some very impressive superyachts. “They’re everywhere in Europe. I’ve seen Paris Hilton’s yacht and Johnny Depp’s yacht, which is a real classic vessel as you can imagine from seeing Pirates of the Caribbean.” Although Nathan says he’s enjoying visiting some of the world’s most glamorous locations, he says there’s nothing glamourous
about crewing on a superyacht. He warns anyone who is thinking about a career on a superyacht that the perception of the job is very different from the reality. “It’s just like any other job. It’s hard work, especially when you are sailing. I think a lot of young people who want to work on a superyacht think it’s going to be a big holiday, but it’s definitely not.” Although Nathan started his maritime career as a deckhand on a tug boat in Port Nelson before
joining the crew on the oil supply boat Seaworker and then skippering the cable protection boat Sea Patroller in the Cook Strait, he says he also needed to study to gain key qualifications. He got his Inshore Launch Masters ticket at NMIT before gaining higher qualifications, including his skipper’s ticket, at the New Zealand Maritime School in Auckland. Nathan returned to NMIT during his visit to Nelson last month to recruit a graduate from NMIT’s

Certificate in Superyacht Crewing course to join T-6. Nathan says he’s impressed with the course and its tutor Pete Carmichael, who joined NMIT last year after serving as a superyacht skipper based in the south of France. “Peter’s got salt in his veins so anyone who does the course under him will be well qualified. It looks like a good course and you certainly need something like that because the chances of getting a job without a qualification are pretty much zero.” Nathan says NMIT graduates also have an added advantage because “Kiwis have such a good name in the industry around the world for their work ethic.” Another reason for preferring New Zealand crew is that in many parts of the world they don’t need visas. Nathan interviewed three candidates before employing Troy Campbell, who got a phone call from Nathan telling him he’d got the the job while he was awaiting a doctor’s appointment for a medical check. “I couldn’t stop smiling through the whole appointment. The doctor said, ‘are you alright?’ I said, ‘yes, I’m off to the Mediterranean in two weeks.’” Nathan travelled to Spain late last month to start his next journey on T-6.

MP attacked with rat poison Nelson MP Nick Smith was attacked by two people at the Nelson Market on Saturday. The protestors rubbed rat poison over his face and clothes before threatening his family. ‘Fancy the Fence’ Richmond Unlimited has introduced a new competition for Queen St retailers called ‘Fancy the Fence’. Inspired by the floral decorations that The Wooden Spoon Café has added to its portion of the Queen St fence, $500 is up for grabs by the business which does the best job of decorating their fence. Judging will take place at the end of each stage by Mayor Richard Kempthorne and Impressions Picture Framers. When decorating the fence, businesses are asked not to put decorations across the joins, or disrupt flow on the footpath.

great recognition of the school and the community.” Most recently Nathan represented the school at the National Area Schools Tournament in rugby and Ki-o-Rahi, and was named in the New Zealand Barbarians Area Schools rugby team for the second year in a row. He also plays in the Murchison Senior B rugby team. Andy describes Nathan as a hardworking and dedicated student, student leader and sportsman.
“He’s not just a great sportsman, but he’s also head boy, chair of the student council, and everything he does, he does to the best of his ability.” In addition to excelling on the sports field, the year 13 student, represented the school on ANZAC Day, speaking at the Murchison memorial service. He is also president of the student council and a peer mediator as well as an active participant and role model in the kapa haka

Nathan Hawley has raised the bar in Murchison, being the first student in the school’s history to be awarded a coveted Student Excellence Award from the New Zealand Area Schools Association. There are just under 10,000 area school students, and Nathan was one of only five students selected from across the whole of New Zealand to receive an award this year. Nathan says compet-
ing against so many students, he’d forgotten about the nomination thinking that he didn’t really stand a chance, so was surprised when he was told he’d won. “I was surprised I got nominated and really surprised when I found out I got the award,” he says. Principal Andy Ashworth, who nominated Nathan, says the award recognises his contribution across all areas of school and community life. “We’re very proud of him and it’s
group. “I just say yes to everything – I like to give everything a go,” Nathan says. Nathan has accepted an apprenticeship with a local builder which he will take up once he has completed his NCEA Level Three, but his community work won’t be ending there. “Helping out in the community is really rewarding – the Murchison community is full of good blokes,” he says.

Silvia Yorke knows first-hand the pain, anguish and guilt that methamphetamine addiction can bring to a family. “As a mother, it’s so hard. When the police come to your door you don’t know what they’re going to tell you – are they arrested, are they dead.” But as a parent, she says, you are also judged. “People don’t treat me as me anymore, they judge me based on my children.” So, the Richmond mother of six is hoping to find a community solution to a community problem. Silvia is hosting an information evening next Monday to foster awareness, reflection and action on the drug and alcohol problem in our region. She says as a result of underfunding and long waitinglists, addicts can wait for weeks or even months before getting treatment. Silvia says people need someone to walk with them along the journey of recovery. “When you’re getting clean, you need to leave the old life behind, but this can be a problem too.” Silvia says that without any support network, with no

She says there’s also no real support for the families of addicts. “For every addict there are 15 to 20 people affected – parents, children, siblings, friends, but there’s no help for the family.” “There is so much guilt and pain you feel when they’re on the street but you can’t let them in because they’re abusive, intimidating or violent.” Silvia says there is an esti-
mated 1000 addicts in the region, which means at least 15,000 people are impacted by the effect of drugs and alcohol on a loved-one’s life. Latest figures from the New Zealand Drug Foundation reveal that 44 per cent of adult New Zealanders have tried illicit drugs and 93 per cent will try alcohol. While most won’t go on to become addicts, 45,000 New Zealanders are treated for alcohol and drug use every year. “I’ve seen people lose every-
thing, more than once – their jobs, house, car, family, children,” says Silvia. “I’ve seen them running for their lives because they’re in debt and wishing to be in prison because it’s safer there.” But she says arrest is not a solution - they’re doing things because they need the money to feed their addictions. Eight years ago Silvia says God gave her a vision, and says she’s been working towards achieving it ever since. She’s completed a social work diploma and is currently undertaking a diploma in christian leadership. She says the pews are full on a Sunday so she’d like to see the seats full on Monday too. The evening is open to anyone concerned about the impact of drugs and alcohol on our community. Silvia says, to find a solution we need to be on the same page and understand the issues first. The information evening is in the Nelson Girls College auditorium on Monday, September 11, starting at 7pm. There will be first-hand stories from ex-addicts as well as children of addicts, along with information on the extent of the problem. “This is about making our community stronger and healthier,” says Silvia.

Fund-raising week for hospital chaplaincy Jessie Johnston Last year the Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy service visited 10,000 people, offering support, comfort and encouragement to patients, visitors and staff alike. The Whare Tapa Wha is a Maori philosophy towards health, based on four pillars, one of which is spiritual health. “Spiritual care, in whatever form it is, is a recognised human right of all patients in the hospital, so we help supply that,” says Reverend Yvonne McLean. “Chaplaincy is for all people,
for all faiths and no faith. Although those of us applying it are Christian, we’re here for everybody, patients, their family members and staff.” There are 18 volunteers in the chaplaincy team, and with 10,000 visits made last year, it is an important service for many who come into Nelson Hospital. The hospital chaplaincy is funded approximately 50 per cent by the government with the other half met through fund-raisers, which is why Chaplaincy Week is held once a year at Nelson Hospital. “During that week, we run
a stall on level two, between 10am and 3pm,” says Yvonne. “There are raffles, people bring in baking, the churches help support us, and the staff support us, so we have quite a lot of stuff to sell. It’s one way the community can support us.” The Chaplaincy fund-raising stall will be set up from September 18 to 22. People can help by donating items to be sold or by visiting the stall and purchasing something. For more information about the chaplaincy service or to make a donation, visit the hospital chaplaincy website at www.ichc.org.nz.

Got some news?
With spring just around the corner, Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members are already preparing for the upcoming season, which starts on the first of October. Boats and motors are being serviced, reels spooled with fresh line, and the odd new item snuck into the house. The fishing at the moment is mainly based around d’Urville Island, when the weather permits, with kingfish, snapper and trevally still around in good numbers and sizes. The owners of smaller boats have reported good hauls of gurnard, tarakihi and blue cod, who put up a good fight on light gear, are easily accessible and fantastic eating. Some more adventurous club members (with bigger boats!) have even tried their luck with fishing for bluefin tuna off the west coast – successfully! In the meanwhile, the committee members are brooding over their plans to pack the club’s fishing calendar with even more events than last season, especially for kids and families. Our open day will take place on 24 September, 3 - 5pm at the Nelson City Club, 1 Kinzett Tce. So drop in to have a chat with the local fishos and find out more about the numerous advantages the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has to offer.

Microchipping your dog is not only a legal requirement but it’s the best way to be reunited with them should they be lost or stolen. The Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes were a prime example of this with most microchipped dogs returned to their owners within 24 hours. When Tasman District Council’s dog control officers are out in the field and come across a stray dog that has either a registration tag or microchip they can check the numbers against the National Dog Database and will know where the dog’s home is, whether it’s local or elsewhere in the country. Tasman District Council also wants people to be aware that when out in public places dogs must be under control at all times. Under control on-leash, means the dog is connected to a leash less than two meters in length, with that leash being held by a person capable of restraining the dog. Under control off-leash, means the dog responds immediately to hand, voice or other such commands. For more information on Coco, the Hungarian Vizsla enjoying her first council’s microchipping services, contact the Tasman District Counvisit at Pets Haven.

We are a member of the New Zealand Pet Crematorium Association (NZPCA) and we believe that the bond with our critters can be as meaningful as any human relationships and thus they deserve the same recognition, dignity and respect in death. Pets Everafter has a state of the art pet cremator which operates silently, meets stringent European standards, emits no visible smoke and produces no smell. Our plans also include a receiving area for clients and the expansion of our virtual pet memorial site. All Black, All Bold, All Beautiful “Wow, just wow”, are the reactions Ben Homan’s friends and family have had upon seeing his newly, made over landscape – complete with the prototype for Black Forrest®. Working for innovative landscaping supply manufacturers, Wholesale Landscapes, Ben was involved in the development of the newly launched, environmentally friendly coloured mulch. Specifically, Ben laid the jet-black ground covering around his home and garden. “We had friends over for lunch, and they were blown away with the contrast. It makes the colour in the garden pop, and it’s like night and day next to the decking and house. It just looks so clean and modern.” Ben’s friends had to wait however, as Black Forrest® was still in development. Sourcing water-based, and toxin-free colouring that is computer monitored for colour intensity, which is also independently lab tested as safe for plants, pets and people – Black Forrest® was about a year in the making. And it proves the adage that good things take time. Black Forrest has the sophisticated visual appeal of a modern ground covering
with the garden health benefits of a mulch. Not only does it form clean, highcontrast lines and make colour pop, but it supresses weeds, retains moisture and improves soil structure and plant health. This means, while it is looking great, it is helping to feed your garden organic matter. “It looks great, and it helps your garden thrive”, says Ben. “And we can deliver it to your door, or you can come and pick it up in a courtesy trailer at our retail yard, down the long drive at 55 Saxton road in Stoke.” Wholesale Landscapes is a local Nelson business that was founded almost 40 years ago, since then, innovative products like Black Forrest® have seen them become the South Island’s largest manufacturer of landscaping products. Forest Floor® mulch is one of their most popular products, while its more than likely your children, or your neighbours children, grew up playing on their playground bark. Certified for safety as an impact protection, Bounce Bark® is the environmentally friendly certified impact protection. “We look forward to seeing you soon for all your landscaping needs,” says Ben.

Ladies got the opportunity for some pampering and shopping at the inaugural St Paul’s School ladies night market last Wednesday, to help raise funds for their multi-purpose space. Attendees were treated to a variety of stalls from Smooch natural products to reflexology, jewellery, crafts and even phobia treatments. There was even a fun photo booth so attendees could memorialise the occasion, with a range of props, outfits and accessories from Dress Up Box. Friends of St Paul’s chairperson and organiser Sarah Churchman says it was a great night. “The stallholders were so enthusiastic and supportive, and everyone I spoke to said they really enjoyed themselves.” Principal Maureen Phillips says that from a roll of 45 when the school first opened in 1999, they now have 230 students. “At the moment we have to all come together in a spare classroom,” she says “but we’ve already reached capacity now so can’t gather as a school.” The proposed multi-purpose space will be used for teaching as well as all-ofschool events and activities, but Maureen says they’re reliant on fundraising. Initial plans for the facility, that will join and extend three existing classrooms, have been prepared for consultation with the school community. “We have a lot of balls up in the air, but once we catch them all it will be very exciting,” says Maureen. Sarah says that they’d love to run the night market again and are also looking

Stihl Shop Richmond’s Jason Ahnfeldt, left, with Nelson Waimea Gun Club’s Merv Randle.

Sponsorship on target Getting around the Nelson Waimea Gun Club’s range in Golden Downs just got easier for its members. In an arrangement between Waimea Weekly and Stihl Shop Richmond, a new 4x4 Kymco side-by-side vehicle was presented to the club. President Merv Randle was over the moon about the offer and says, with a series of high profile shoots coming up including the South Island champs, the vehicle will be invaluable. “We will use it to take the trap machines around the course on the days of the shoot,” Merv says. “It will be ideal for transferring judges and officials around each different discipline. “In the past, we have had to beg or borrow and, while the members have always been very generous, it’s nice to now have a machine of our own”. Stihl Shop Richmond’s Jason Ahnfeldt says the new four-wheelers are designed for heavy duty farm work and are a welcome addition to the range on offer at the shop in Gladstone Rd. He says they have a strong
construction and extra safety features that are playing a big part on farms now. Publisher of the Waimea Weekly, Steve Page, says the arrangement shows a new direction in sponsorship by the paper. “We have considerable pressure on the paper all the time and are very aware of what a big difference we make to sporting sponsorships,” Steve says. “This is a little different, sure, but we have a good relationship with the gun club and are looking forward to it growing in popularity in the coming years. “For this to happen, it needs the support of locals. The club has always been a special place and the lessons it teaches in sport and firearm safety are immeasurable, and we are very happy to be part of that.” The club has an open coaching day for anyone interested in clay pigeon shooting at its range at 806 Valley Rd in Golden Downs this Sunday starting at 9.30am. All welcome.

Richmond needs an upset Andrew Board Journalist
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
“C’mon Wakefield”. That's the call from Richmond Athletic co-coach Steve Clark as his side lost its position at the top of the Nelson Bays Football first division with just one game remaining. Wakefield could do its Waimea Plains neighbours a big favour this weekend by beating table toppers FC Nelson, a result that would see Richmond crowned champions, if they can also beat fourth-placed Tahuna FC. FC Nelson overtook previous league leaders Richmond Athletic after Richmond lost to Nelson College last Wednesday night, and now sit one point clear at the top. FC Nelson coach Paul Brydon says his team has “slid through the back door”, making up eight points on Richmond after the departure of three English imports, including National League golden boot Ben Harris. “On paper we had a good side, so I always thought once those guys from Richmond left we’d have a

We needed to beat them and we did, and then some other teams like Tahuna and Nelson College did us a favour.” If Richmond co-coach Steve Clark can point to a single moment of the season that has cost his team its spot at the top of
the table with a game remaining, it is surely when it dropped two points to Tahuna FC in the final minutes of the game. Up 3-1, Richmond conceded two late goals to draw 3-3. “If you were going to review the season, that’s the only time the
lads have let themselves down. Apart from that we have no criticism of the lads whatsoever.” He says the team is still positive despite the drop in form. “We’ve kept things positive. We’ve had a good season and we have to admit that things have gone
against us and the pendulum has definitely swung back in their favour. If they go on, good luck to them, they would have thoroughly deserved it.” Not that he was dismissing a “niggly” Wakefield side pulling off an upset. “We have a real good relationship with the guys at Wakefield so we’re hoping they can do something for us.” Paul concedes the season is far from over with Wakefield recently knocking FC Nelson out of the Price Charity Cup. “We know what [Wakefield] are like, they’re a hard, bustling side. They’ll have a go at us and they’d love to beat us. But we have 90 minutes to do the job.” He says his team has plenty of experience and that should help them prepare for the final game of the league. “We still have to keep our feet on the ground. Treat it like a cup final, we still have to win it. I’ve seen these situations like this before when teams have slipped.” Wakefield play FC Nelson at Guppy Park and Richmond play Tahuna FC at the Tahunanui Playing Fields kicking off at 3pm.

PUNCTURE REPAIRS 69 When the All Blacks run onto Trafalgar Park next year it will be in front of a largely temporary stadium, but sporting leaders hope that will change sooner rather than later. The pitch at Trafalgar Park was upgraded for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, along with other key infrastructure like entry and ticketing booths and lights. But while one side of Trafalgar Park is a modern stand, the other is made up of temporary seating with the old main grandstand still standing behind it. When the All Blacks arrive in town for next year’s Rugby Championship, temporary stands will be added at either end in an effort to create a similar atmosphere to an English football ground.
Nelson's Trafalgar Park could be in line for an upgrade if Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis and Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner get their way. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.
rvice ices In an interview with Waimea Weekly last week, Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis said Nelson needed to “make up its mind” about how Trafalgar Park should look to attract other big events in the future.
He suggested that a 10,000 seat stadium with a roof shouldn’t be discounted. “I think, as a region, we need to work out what we want. I think what the town needs for events, whether it MotoX events, opera,

Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran, is a 10,000 seat stadium that is practical, not over the top, and that doesn’t cost a lot of money. I think this town also needs some infrastructure. I think then events will want to come here. Wouldn’t it be great to have a 10,000 seat stadium in Nelson with a roof over the top? We could bring any event here. For an All Blacks test we just add another 5000 at either end. How good would that be? I think as a city we need to stop whinging about having to go to Auckland for events, get our own stuff together and let's start thinking big.” Chair of the Sport and Recreation Committee at Nelson City Council, Cr Tim Skinner, says he agrees with Tony and wants to talk about how to improve Trafalgar Park. “I view it [Trafalgar Park] as our premier sporting spot and with the Sport and Rec committee being new we’re just at the point of doing the long term plan and what would best serve Nelson.” He says he’s open to ideas and said of Tony's roof idea, “lets throw it
in the mix” but was adamant that something needed to be done to improve the park. “I’d definitely like to see something happen. There are some things I like to go real big on and some things use a bit-by-bit approach. But I think the leverage we can get, and with the location that Trafalgar Park has, it would be worth the investment. “Community sport is now well catered for because the council has done a lot of work over recent years, but Trafalgar Park is quite a different niche and it needs some work.” He says he’d like to see the pitch moved a few metres closer to the existing west stand and then a new stand built as close as possible to the pitch, but was keen to hear from sporting codes and residents before setting any wheels in motion. How would you like to see Trafalgar Park develop? Email us at editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz or search Nelson Weekly on Facebook.

Drummond's decision vindicated with title Andrew Board Losing, for Jess Drummond, would have been unbearable. Not only would there have been the pain of losing a premier club netball final, but that she also missed out on the Tasman women's rugby debut game in the national competition. "So it's a good thing we won," she grinned as Jacks OPD claimed its first premier club netball championship in four years. Jess, a member of the New Zealand womens 7s team, would have been a sure starter for Tasman as it played its inaugural match in the Farah Palmer Cup campaign, which kicked off in Blenheim just hours before the netball final. Jess says it was a tough decision as she would have loved to have played for Tasman, but it was a final and she had committed to Jacks first. As it turned out, Jess played another superb game at centre as Jacks ran away with the title over the defending champion Prices Pharmacy A. After falling behind in the first quarter, Jacks managed to stay with Prices throughout the first half, to be down 25-22 at half time. But it was in the third quarter that Jacks started to turn up the heat, firing into the lead within minutes of the quarter commencing. Prices held their nerve and

Running
A record 215 people will compete in this Saturday’s Dun Run, almost doubling last year’s numbers. While the bulk of the field are Nelson based, 60 from outside the region will get their taste of Nelson’s historic “backwoods” and foot it along the nation’s first railway line. This year is the 23rd year the event has been run. Above: Jacks OPD celebrate winning the Nelson Netball premier grade final on Saturday afternoon. Jacks goal keep Jordan Webby grabbed several key intercepts, while at the other end goal shoot Ari Waitai was in typically superb form, helping to grow the Jacks lead by an extra 12 points in that final quarter. In the end Jacks blew Prices away to win 55-42. Jacks coach Robyn Leonard says she was delighted with
the performance of her side. "It was really good, really good. I'm very pleased. We always knew that it would be quite tight and it was for most of it. But in the final quarter the girls did what they needed to do." She says that included playing smart netball. "We used our brains, when we needed to get it go we did, we had back-up on the lines, the girls were winning ball, it was great because it was a very classy Prices side we played."

Prices coach Mandy Whiting says her side just couldn't stop Jacks in that final quarter. "They played really well, they just got on a run, they had all the momentum and we just couldn't stop them. That's life, there has to be a winner and a loser and today we were the losers. “But I'm very proud of the girls, they did their best and at the end of it all we were fighting for the title, it's where you want to be at this part of the season."

Boys hockey team confident at Founders Cup
Aimee Mirfin Manager
The division three secondary schools tournament got underway on Monday in Wanganui and will run until Friday. “The boys don’t usually play in this team, they’ve been put together specifically for the tournament,” says Jan Wilson, Waimea College’s teacher in charge of hockey. However, the bulk of the boys have played together for the last three years, with the team split 50/50 between senior and junior students.
Ben Harris
Their relatively new formation has had little effect on their performance on the turf, with the boys team recently winning the two-day Top of the South tournament which was held locally. “They’re a champion team, not a team of champions so they support each other and work well together on the turf,” says Jan. “And the juniors stand their ground against the seniors.” With hockey season at its end in Nelson, this is the sen-
ior student’s last school competition and they have set their standards high for the Founders Cup. While first place is on everyone’s mind, realistically the team is aiming to finish in the top eight, if not the top four. Around 15 other teams will be competing in the tournament, including Marlborough and Nelson Boys College, although having beaten them before, Waimea College is more than confident in their ability to do it again.
