First fundraiser a huge success It has been anything but baby steps for new local charity Walk With Us which experienced a full house for its first ever fundraising event last Tuesday evening. The organisation packed out the Waimea Old Boys Clubrooms with more than 200 people who all put their hands up to bid on locally donated items in the name of charity. Walk With Us is a charity focussed on putting school and sports shoes on the feet of kids who may not have them otherwise and is already receiving support from local schools who have jumped onboard the pilot programme. Spokesperson for the trust Carol Shirley says they were blown away by the support they received on the night raising $15,000. Harley passenger rides donated by Route 6 were among the most popular of items, securing the charity $2300 alone.

This Thursday, with 40 extra staff on deck, Kmart will finally open its doors for business to thousands of keen customers, alongside new neighbours Coupland’s Bakery and Benge & Co. Eventually the trio will be joined by Aki Sushi, Columbus Coffee and The Warehouse. Only one of the above had already set up shop in Richmond prior to the development coming to fruition, the

rest are completely new to the district. So why did they decide to come to Richmond? Well according to a Gibbon’s Holding spokesperson the reason is simply the town’s growth, and those comments are supported by last month’s announcement that Tasman was the second fastest growing region in the South Island. “Our tenants identified Richmond for its growth potential and car parking advantages,” the spokesperson says. “We purchased the site back in 2001 when it was tenanted by Placemakers, with the anticipation that Richmond and Tasman would grow.
