Christmas has come early for Richmond retailers who are celebrating the temporary re-opening of Queen St.

Work on the $15million, sixstage Queen St upgrade commenced in February, and has been the subject of lengthy delays and cost overruns. But for now, all is forgiven and forgotten while retailers get on with celebrating the new-look and the influx of

Christmas shoppers. Tasman District Council engineering services manager Richard Kirby says that it is a credit to contractors Downers that they met the December 1 deadline to enable the street to be open for Christmas. Mayor Richard

Kempthorne also expressed his gratitude to Downers, but acknowledged the significant impact on retailers. “I’m incredibly proud of the businesses. It’s been so challenging for them, operationally and financially,” says Richard.

McGlashen Pharmacy owner Andrew McGlashen also commended the resilience of the business es and the support of the community. “We’re so grateful for all the

Marian Stephens, Richmond. “It’s wonderful for the shops. Living at Oakwoods, I walk up the street twice a day, with my eyesight, it’s nice not to have channels and kerbing and to have the wide footpaths.”

Open for business FROM PAGE 1 support we’ve received from our customers,” says Andrew. “But it’s fantastic to see the street open again and we hope that this positive feel flows on to a vibrant Christmas trading period.” Richmond Unlimited chairperson Marina Buonocore says, “it’s the perfect timing to have Queen St open for Christmas shopping, tourists and events, and the retailers should benefit from all the increased vehicle and foot traffic,” says Marina. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says that the wider footpaths, greenery and seating make Queen St so inviting and is hoping people will take the time to enjoy the new pedestrian-friendly environment. “We believe the changes will encourage more people to visit and spend time on Queen St. We’ve had so much positive feedback,” says Mayor Kempthorne. “We feel rejuvenated and excited about the next two months,” says Wooden Spoon owner Nicky Woodbury. Stage four of the upgrade will recommenced February 7, 2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of May 2018.

“The result it great, it’s been a long time coming. I’m glad they’ve opened it for the retailers and already the number of people on Queen Street has shot up.”

“It looks really great, it’s going to be lovely when it’s finished. I hope there’s lot’s of trees and seating. It’s a great improvement.”

“From what you can see of the bits they’ve already finished, they’ve done a good job. Once it’s all completed it will look great.”

Water rationing imminent as dry spell continues Simon Bloomberg Water rationing is certain to be introduced across the Waimea Plains this week and is likely to become more severe with the Met Service forecasting hot, dry weather over the next two weeks. Tasman district’s Dry Weather Taskforce was scheduled to meet this week to consider water rationing after concerns about the impact of the hot, dry weather and declining river flows on the Waimea Plains aquifers. The taskforce delayed any rationing when it met last week but with no rain, it is likely to implement stage one rationing which will mean a 20 per cent cut to many irrigators on the Waimea Plains. Taskforce convener Dennis Bush-King says there is no doubt the river flows and aquifer levels are declining and

Kyle says. “It’s going to be hot and dry for the first two weeks of December but there could be some rain in the third week.” Wakefield residents have already been asked to conserve water after levels dropped in the well supplying the town. The hot, dry weather is also causing concern for rural firefighters with Fire and Emergency principal rural fire officer Ian Reade saying there have been five vegetation fires in the last week, with one “somehow ignited” by solar panels near Tapawera on Sunday. “We had three fires started by lightning strikes and one by fire works and now this,” says Ian. He says that people need to be vigilant and take precautions when they are working around dry vegetation or anything that can burn.

Richmond councillor Kit Maling has been cleared of all conflict of interest allegations over the proposed Waimea Dam, but now he wants to know who questioned his impartiality over the project. “We have concluded that there is no breach of the contracting rule [and] we have concluded there is no breach of the participation rule by Cr Maling,” a letter from assistant auditorgeneral Melanie Webb says. The Office of the AuditorGeneral (AOG) received multiple complaints regarding Kit’s financial interests in the Waimea East Irrigation Company and Waimea Irrigators Ltd. There were also concerns that Kit had predetermined his decision in favour of the Waimea Dam. Kit says he isn’t surprised by the outcome because he had taken advice prior to the election to determine what actions to take if elected, and had divested himself of all potential interests prior to being sworn in. While happy with the outcome, Kit says “what annoys me, is that someone has accused me

of wrongdoing … they wanted me kicked off council”. “From my perspective, when you’re accusing someone of something you should have to front up. It’s a breach of natural

the complainants. However, Michael Heine, AOG spokesperson, says that people need to be able to raise concerns without fear of reprisal. “We believe anyone should be able to get in touch with us, if need be, with confidentiality assured,” says Michael. Waimea Dam opponent Maxwell Clark, who has been vocal in his concerns about Kit’s potential conflicts of interest, says “it wasn’t me” who complained. However, Maxwell considers that Kit should have stood aside during the three-month enquiry. “Even while under investigation I believe members should step aside from duties, like MPs do,” he says. With another complaint being lodged to the AOG regarding the mayor Richard Kempthorne, who has previously been cleared of any misconduct or conflict, Kit says council could be ground to a halt if members had to withdraw. “Council would be in a position of inertia if members stood down every time someone lodged a complaint,” says Kit.

‘Low life’ takes fun out of Xmas

A Christmas to remember

St house with thousands of Christmas lights for the last eight years and this year they wanted to make it the “best display ever”. They had even purchased a spectacular Christmas laser light to set-off the already colourful display, but they put that plan on hold on Monday after thieves stole and vandalised hundreds of lights on Sunday night. “They stole two sets of solar lights and a set of 300 electric lights along the fence,” Brownie says. “Then they came right

Every year, Richmond’s Gary (Brownie) and Dawn Brown do their best to brighten up Christmas, decorating their house with colourful, flashing reindeer, Santas and elves, but this week a “low life” stole some of those lights and the joy they bring to hundreds of children. Brownie and Dawn have been decorating their Queen

up to the front door and stole a solar light curtain and two other lights right off the hand rail, and we didn’t hear a thing. “I’m just so disappointed and upset. We do it so people can enjoy it – we love seeing the kids’ faces when they walk past and see the lights. “But now some low life has decided to steal some of them, so we won’t be putting all the expensive ones up now. It’s sad we have to do that.” Police are investigating the theft.

Craig Vercoe is just an ordinary bloke but last month he became a lifesaver, giving CPR to Sharon McDonald who had collapsed soon after the start of a half marathon walk. Sharon had suffered a heart attack and was not breathing and had no pulse when Craig rushed to her aid. Craig immediately started CPR while a St John paramedic raced away to get a defibrillator and, after about six minutes, Sharon’s heart finally started beating. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him,” Sharon told the Waimea Weekly. “He didn’t think about it, he just got on with it and saved my life.” And that’s why Sharon nominated Craig for this month’s Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sorts Award and we agreed he was a worthy winner. Craig, who received $100 in Stihl Shop Richmond vouchers from shop owner Grant Blanchett last week, says he’s just pleased he was able to help. “I do a first aid course every two years for my job, so I’m glad I knew what to do,” Craig says. “I didn’t even think about it – I just got in there and started doing CPR. “It was a bit scary though. Sharon was really grey and cold, and we were going for six or seven minutes before we got a pulse – we were very lucky.” Grant says Craig’s efforts were highly commendable and he’s a deserved winner of November’s Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sorts Award. People can nominate anyone from the Waimea Weekly’s distribution area for the award by emailing editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz. The email needs to explain why the nominee deserves to be a Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sort and include contact details so we can publish a story and photo of the monthly winner in the Waimea Weekly.

RSA members stepped back in time at Willow Bank Heritage Village near Wakefield last week when they attended the opening of a 1970s replica RSA clubrooms, complete with a wall of historic photos of some of the Nelson-Tasman region’s returned

servicemen. Willow Bank’s Christine Grieder says they initiated the project to “remember all soldiers, the dead and the living”. The RSA helped out, making sure the small building was authentic as possible and providing some historic items to help furnish and decorate the room. “Years ago, every little town had their own RSA similar to this one,

so it brings back memories,” Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast RSA president Derek Nees says. “I remember when there were RSA buildings Tapawera, Takaka, Ngatimoti and Murchison, but they’re all closed now.” Although many of the region’s outlying RSA buildings have closed and been sold, Derek says the RSA movement is as strong as ever.

He says the modern RSA is focused on “engaging with veterans and supporting them when they need help”, rather than investing in property. A wall honouring many of the region’s old soldiers and a 1970s style bar are the centre pieces of the Willow Bank RSA. It also features an authentic 1919 map of the Front Line, while outside an ex-army Jeep and Vickers ma-

chine gun provide appropriate garden art. Christine says it is an “incredible honour” to have both the Nelson and Richmond Waimea RSA involved in the project and offered to make the building available for their meetings. Nelson RSA president Dave Laws responded by saying they would make Christine an honorary member of their branch.

Vivian Fox hard at work at Elise as a young woman. I was more than capable, so away we went,” Vivian says. "I never could have done it without that help." Vivian sold Elise when she was 21 and set about building a successful career. She started other hair salons before moving into hospitality, including owning the Smokehouse and Apple Shed at Ma-

pua and Saltwater on Wakefield Quay. “I look back and think 'god, that was the beginning of my life’. I’ve self-employed ever since.” Vivian was impressed with what Sarah was trying to bring to Elise. “She’s really thinking outside the square.” Sarah had been a beauty therapist for nine years and thought it was time to have her own space. “Randomly this place came up and it was just a hair salon, and I saw huge potential to have hair and beauty. So I took the leap.” She says it was great to have a connection with Vivian. “It felt really cool for her to see what I have done with the place.” Sarah was leaning towards changing the name of the salon but after seeing its heritage she is leaning towards keeping it. Vivian says she was delighted with Elise. “So many things have come and gone and to think that that place has stayed there with the same name. It’s wonderful.”

When Vivian Fox sat down to judge one particular entry at this year’s Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce business awards she felt like she had seen a ghost. Staring back at her was Elise Hair Design – the very same business that Vivian took over thirty years earlier as a fresh-faced 16-year-old. “I was just flabbergasted, to be honest," she says. "It was so unbelievable to go back to that same business.” The hair salon has kept its name over all those years – perhaps the only such business to have done so. The new owner was Sarah Mussen, who bought the business last year and is setting about breathing new life into it. She has renovated the inside and is slowly working her way freshening it up. The experience led Vivian, now a successful career business woman with myriad ventures in the hospitality industry, on a trip down memory lane. “It was my first ever business,” she says. “It was wonderful.”

Vivian left school when she was 15 and had worked at the salon on Tukuka St. Then the opportunity came up to buy the place and her parents decided to help out. “The owner told my parents

New website offers a shot Andrew Board One Nelson man is on a mission to get you noticed. Tane Rameka says he got his idea for a new website to help New Zealanders get discovered after talking to various people around the region. "The feedback I got was that some people were doing jobs that they didn't enjoy or didn't make use of their skills. So I thought, how could I make it easier for people to get discovered and to follow their passion." The answer, it seems, has been found. Tane has launched a new website called "Offer me a Shot". It encourages people to upload information about themselves, their passions and skills they have. Whether it's a club rugby player looking for a new team, a singer looking to be discovered or a labourer wanting to let employers know they're available for work. Tane hopes the site will be used by "decision makers" and employers who are looking for talented people but often struggle to find them, and by people keen to share their talent with the world. "What I've come to realise is that

able to use it. "It's like a job listing site in reserve," he says. "Upload a video or pictures of your skills and passion on the site and let prospective employers come to you." He says it can also work for bands putting their profile up which venues could then scout and book from. Tane is giving away a free annual membership for anyone who wants to be a part of it. "I'm trying to give people hope and confidence. It's free and you have nothing to lose." Tane says he wants to grow the site locally first and then expand it throughout New Zealand, before taking it global. He says the site is "win-win". "I just want people to have a crack at something they're passionate about. "If an employer can find a passionate employee then they are gold and, for the employee, they'll be doing what they're really passionate about." MERRY CHRISTMAS NELSON

Crate Day crash A Crate Day drinking session has resulted in $1725 in fines and nine months’ disqualification from driving for 18-year-old Billy Langley. He appeared in Nelson District Court on Monday and plead guilty to drink driving, dangerous driving and racing his car. He lost control while going around a bend on Aniseed Valley Rd on Saturday night while racing another car and went through a fence, leaving him down a bank. His breath alcohol reading was 791 micrograms; the legal limit for drivers under 20 is zero. Community Patrol extends to daytime Richmond community patrollers are taking to the streets during the day from December 18 for three weeks. The daily patrols are normally 9pm until 2am, but due to the increase of incidents over the Christmas period, the patrollers are adding a 1pm to 5pm shift. Coordinator Mike Gill says that they patrol car parks and busy holiday areas such as rivers and Rabbit Island. They also leave friendly notices from the Police providing guidance on vehicle safety. Maori ward survey Tasman District Council resolved not to establish a Maori Ward for the 2019 triennial elections, but agreed to undertake a further round of discussion with iwi on whether to establish a Maori Ward for the 2022 and 2025 elections. An on-line survey on Council’s website is currently open for the community to provide feedback on their preferred representation arrangements. This feedback will be considered by Council when establishing its initial representation proposal early next year.

Making ambulances less scary Kate Russell A Tapawera volunteer ambulance officer has mixed her day job with a passion for writing, to produce a series of books to dispel children’s fears of ambulances. Francine Currie launched her latest book, ‘Sam’s Makeover’ in Nelson on Saturday, adding to her four other books about ‘Sam the Ambulance’. The self-published author says she came up with the concept of Sam after seeing that children who require ambulance services are often “unsure or scared”. “As an ambulance officer, when we respond to patients we often find young children are scared of the ambulance, officers in uniform and unusual medical equipment,” she says. “Kids do find ambulances exciting, but the flip side is that when they actually need one, it can be quite frightening.” So, she decided to write the books to help adults have conversations with children about ambulance service so they are more familiar with what they do. Each book has a different theme, with the latest instalment educating kids about St John ambulances changing colour, from white to yellow. In other books, Sam goes to a rugby game, works with his friend the Rescue Chopper and attends an emergency in the country. The books also use real St John paramedics as the characters, along with Nelson landmarks to make the books “relatable” for children. “Kids always recognise things in the pictures, like Nelson Hospital, and we now hear children call our ambulances Sam.” Francine, who has been an ambulance officer for 12 years, says she “had always fancied writing”. She ran her idea past a few people, including her father who loaned her the funds to turn her dream into a reality. The first book was published in 2012. The books are illustrated by local artist Paula Cunliffe. “It’s easy enough to write the books, but Paula really made Sam come alive for me.” The books are available from the St John Community Shop, Copy Press, Page and Blackmore, www.curriebooks.com or by contacting Francine at ambulancesamstories@gmail.com SPONSORED BY

Judene Edgar Murchison Area School dux Jemma Gibson says that her most valuable lesson has been learning that doing your best is good enough. While she says that she used to doubt her abilities, she realised that not being great at something straight off didn’t mean she couldn’t get there if she applied herself and worked hard. Unfortunately, the talented 18-year-old says that she set the bar too high for herself. “I would cry once I got home if I found out I only got an ‘Achieved’ grade on something,” says Jemma. She eventually realised that these perfectionist tendencies were not healthy and knew something had to change. “I was stressed and anxious and I hated what I had created for myself,” she says. However, a book she received for Christmas last year helped change things around for her. There was a quote in the book that made her realise that doing her best was enough - ‘we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit’. “I realised that as long as I was always doing my best, I couldn’t expect any more of myself.” This more-relaxed attitude has paid off. As well as being awarded dux, she has received a University of Canterbury Emerging Leaders Scholarship worth $6000, to go towards her primary teaching degree. And best of all, she’s done it without letting stress get the better of her. Jemma is glad that she worked hard over the past few years and says she is leaving school knowing she’s capable of achieving anything she sets her mind to. “Goals make things achievable because you know what you are working towards.”

The annual Tapawera Show is set to combine all the fun of the fair with Christmas this year. It’s going to be an actionpacked day according to organising committee member Justin Frost, who says that “we have a huge number of fun things planned with a real rural feel, which makes it such a fun, family day out.”

Attractions for animal lovers include the duck and dog herding display, fancy dressed pets, baby animal tent, dog with the loudest bark competition and goat milking demonstration. Justin says that the best dressed pet competition is always popular with children dressing up their lambs, piglets, dogs and even rabbits. There will be entertainment from the motocross boys, highland dancing displays, woodchoppers and ukulele band. As well as trade and craft

stalls and yummy food, there will be some great displays including a 1912 International tractor, which Justin says is the “only one in the world”, alongside hot rods, classic cars and an antique gun display. Shop for some Christmas presents or come and meet Santa and check out the Christmas wreath competition. The Tapawera Show is on Saturday, December 9 from 10am to 4pm at the Tapawera Domain and School Grounds. Adults $4, children free.

queen street – a place for people The fences are down, the construction teams have packed up, and Queen Street has fully re-opened for summer. The new streetscape is in place from the McIndoe intersection up to Sundial Square. It not only looks fantastic, but is a safer and easier space to navigate for pedestrians, particularly those with limited sight or mobility.

Here’s how it works: Wider footpaths – our beautiful wide footpaths are for pedestrians to use and enjoy, and are obstacle-free for those in wheelchairs, with canes, pushing prams and so on. Please no cycling or manoeuvring cars on the footpaths.

There are going to be two “jolly big men” coming to the Brightwater Carols in the Park on Sunday, with Santa being joined by All Black forward Tim Perry. Tim’s selection to be part of the All Blacks Northern Hemisphere tour, meant that the Tasman prop missed the Mitre 10 cup final against Canterbury, but thankfully he’s back in time for Carols in the Park. Wanderers Sports Club manager Diane Drogemuller says that they are delighted that Tim will be there along with some mates and leading the tug-of-war challenge. “We’re delighted that Tim’s going to be joining in the fun,” says Diane. “We’ve got a good team putting the event together. It’s just nice to have an event like this where all of the community can come together and have a good time.” And the other big man is not going to be outdone by Tim. Santa will be on hand to meet the children and will be having a lolly scramble. As well as a Christmas carol sing-a-long, Tamworth-bound country music protégé Zac Griffiths will be singing. There will be food and drinks available for purchase, including pavlova with berries, but families are also welcome to bring a picnic. Carols in the Park is being held at the Brightwater Domain, Sunday, December 10 from 5pm to 8pm.

Five years ago, Monique Clementson was taking the stage for her first ever show, playing Miss Adelaide in the Waimea College production of Guys and Dolls. Now, she’s part of a 24-date nationwide tour of Saturday Night Fever. While her love of theatre was sparked at Waimea College, Monique credits former Henley School teacher Val Kennedy for giving her the confidence to perform. “She had so much love and faith in people and the arts, and I just recall her filling me with so much confidence and belief in myself,” says Monique. While Monique is still a little surprised by her new-found fame, her family and former teachers certainly aren’t. And a scrapbook of newspaper clippings put together by her mother, Bev Harris, for her 18th birthday, show a star in the making. “She still doesn’t get how good she is,” says Bev. Waimea College performing arts and music teacher Melanie Stewart, who directed her in Guys and Dolls agrees. “She’d exude confidence on stage, but she was never 100 per cent sure of her talent,” she says. “The gift was always there, and my role is to give them the

opportunity to shine - but she would shine anywhere.” Monique’s earliest roles were in a Henley School production playing Tina Dactyl, a Tina Turner bird impersona-

went to the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts in Christchurch, that her true lessons in musical theatre started. “My biggest learning curve has been that you never truly stop learning and if you really want something you can 100 per cent achieve it, but you can’t expect it to land on your door step without putting in the hard yards first,” says Monique. “Be the teacher’s pet, the goody good, listen to everyone, be kind to all, keep bettering yourself every day, and it’s never too late to go after what you want.” Her mother says that while performing arts has always been her passion, it’s her personality, drive and attitude that have helped land her some big roles. Graduating with a Bachelor of Performing Arts in Music Theatre in March this year, she made her Court Theatre debut playing Pilar in Legally Blonde. From there she was asked to audition for Sister Act, headlining as Deloris Van Cartier, with fellow former Waimea College student Chris Goodyear also in the show. She is now on tour with Saturday Night Fever, the Musical, which is coming to the Theatre Royal Nelson December 9 and 10.

Catholic community adds Christmas cheer Simon Bloomberg Students from Garin College and St Paul’s School are helping to make this Christmas a happy one for many disadvantaged families, collecting food items for the annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hamper Appeal. Every year the two Richmond schools join forces with Catholic churches and businesses around the Waimea district for the appeal. They collect food items and package them in decorated Christmas hampers which are delivered to around 50 families the week before Christmas. “It’s an opportunity to help others who are not as fortunate as us at Christmas,” Garin student Catherine Ritchie says. Catherine says many of the food items donated by Garin students were collected during a mufti-day held two weeks ago. The students donated a food item instead of a gold coin for the mufti-day. The Young Vinnies group, with a little help from Phillipa Winch, Angela Gilhooly and Sharlene Bascand, also contributed to the appeal by making decorated food boxes and Christmas cards for the families. The appeal’s coordinator Elizabeth Williams says they have been overwhelmed by the generous support from the business community. Elizabeth says the demand for Christmas hampers has escalated this year and the two schools, Catholic churches and businesses have responded to that demand. Elizabeth says there’s still time for people to donate food for the hampers by dropping off items at the St Vincent de Paul shop at 11A McGlashen Ave, behind the Richmond Library car park. The food hampers will be packed on December 12 and then topped up with fresh fruit and vegetables and bread vouchers the following week when they will be distributed to families.

St Vincent de Paul Richmond would like to thank all the sponsors who donated so generously to their Christmas hampers, and wish you all a blessed and joyful Christmas.

Cards send love to old folk Jessie Johnston

Offer ends 31 Jan 2018

Ph 544 8720 12 Gladstone Rd, Richmond

Christmas is a time for love and generosity, which is why local woman Debbie Lennox is getting behind the Sending Love NZ movement and encouraging others to do the same. Sending Love NZ is a nationwide initiative that aims to put a smile on lonely rest home residents faces this Christmas by giving them a card or letter that’s been written by a member of their community. The concept was established just weeks ago by Auckland resident Hannah Rodgers and has quickly spread throughout the country, thanks to people like Debbie who want to bring a little feel good Christmas spirit to their community. It was her daughter who put her onto the initiative, which Debbie quickly picked up and implemented in Richmond, placing a collection box at Sinful Coffee. Last week, a second box was also set up at The Warehouse in Nelson. “To be alone at Christmas time, I couldn’t think of anything worse, so that’s why I wanted to get involved,” says Debbie. “People can either make their

of them. December 14 is the deadline, after which Debbie will collect both boxes and sort the contents, ready to be distributed on Christmas Eve.

It was a big week for 160 Waimea Intermediate school students who sang, danced and played their way through six performances in just three days last week. The Waimea Intermediate showcase was an opportunity for students to share their learning and achievements over the year with performances to visiting schools, pre-schools and kindergartens and, of course, family. First Years Richmond pre-school were one of the lucky groups to attend their opening performance alongside students from Appleby and Wakefield schools, and Richmond and Henley kindergartens on Monday. Centre manager Karina Tutty says that the children really enjoyed themselves and had come back talking about the show. “We love being able to take the children on outings and it was wonderful to be invited to attend the show,” says Karina. “It’s also a good opportunity for the students to see what goes on at school.” Arts teacher Genny Sanders says that it was great being able to showcase the range of talent within the school, with performances from the choir, kapa haka group, performance hip-hop, rock bands, stage band and Masked Parade and Wearable Arts entries all involved in the show. “They were really excited to show what they’ve been doing,” says Genny. Emcees Lochy Mirfin and Coryn Shuker were the audience’s guides for the musical tour. The kapa haka group opened the showcase with a waiata poi led by the beautiful voice of Saphire Dorizac and followed by an impassioned haka led by Alex Ward. This year’s theme was “we are the world” with songs, dance styles, music and wearable art from the four corners.

Thinking is good. It is good to make time to pause and reflect on what is important in life. Too often we can rush in and make decisions we would later regret. Or we can allow fears and worries to drag us down into a deep hole that we cannot escape from. One of the most common regrets of the elderly is that they spent too much time and wasted energy in life worrying about things that only caused hardship, heartache and illhealth. In fact, it has been borne out in several studies

that as much as 85 per cent of what we worry about never happens so why worry? Our thoughts, choices, attitudes impact every area of our lives, as well as our relationships and even latest research in the field of epigenetics and neuroplasticity has shown that this can even alter our DNA and therefore affect following generations. The good thing is choice is real. Free will exists. We can renew our minds by changing the way we think, by changing attitudes, making right choices and as the proverb says, ‘wise people think before they act.’ The apostle Paul gave great

advice: “Don’t become so welladjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.” Furthermore, he said anyone who wants to pursue a full and meaningful life and experience peace of mind. “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Then the God of peace will be with you.” Do yourself a favour. Think well and live longer without regrets.

Nick takes on top cycling job Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Nick Flyger on track with the Australian team earlier this year. Photo: Cycling Australia.

OOPS!

Nick Flyger wasn’t interested in cycling when he was a student at Waimea College, but 18 years later it’s become his life after he was appointed as the national sprint coach for the Australian track cycling team. Nick, who was back in New Zealand last week with the Australian track team at the Oceania champs, played rugby and softball when he was at Waimea College. Although he had no interest in cycling, all that changed when he went to Otago University to study physical education and biomechanics. “I became interested in adventure racing so, as part of that, I started doing a fair bit of mountainbiking,” Nick says. “Then, when I did my Masters degree in biomechanics, I started playing around with coaching and worked with a few students who were cycling to find things out.

Santa fell

“I made a pretty good start because one of them was (Tour de France rider) Jack Bauer and I told him to forget mountainbiking and start racing on the road. He had such a big engine that you knew he would be a top road cyclist if he made the switch.” After completing his Masters, Nick got as job at the Malaysian Institute of Sport where he started to coach track cyclists. One of his star pupils was Azizulhasni Awang, who became the first Malaysian to win a track cycling medal at the Olympics when he finished third in the keirin final at Rio. Nick also started a PhD in Malaysia aimed at “understanding the physiology of maximal repeated muscular contractions”, which is the fundamental sports science behind competitive sprint cycling. But Nick’s studies were “put on hold” when he secured a coaching job at the Australian Institute of Sport in Adelaide where he worked with the late Gary West who coached Australian cycling legend Anna Meares.

Nick was appointed caretaker coach when Gary became ill last year and in May this year was named as national sprint coach. The appointment was made by the new Australian cycling highperformance boss Simon Jones who has adopted a sports science approach to the sport. However, Nick says that science is just one part of the coaching equation which he says is remarkably uncomplicated. “I have a very simple coaching philosophy – it’s based on four things – culture, psychology, training and science. I believe you need the first three before worrying about the one per cent gains you can get from science.” Although Nick still regards himself as a New Zealander, he has no reservations about coaching an Australian sports team. “It’s the nature of professional sport so I don’t have any worries about that. But I still look forward to coming home to Nelson at Christmas and this year I can’t wait to see the new velodrome – that’s really exciting.”

New Genesis II. It’s not an evolution it’s a revolution.

Peter Gibbs The perfect summer continued to bless Nelson sea swimmers as the first race of the Clements Endurance Series between Tahunanui Beach and the Nelson Yacht Club took place on Sunday. The Opening Splash attracted 110 swimmers, eight choosing the short option of 600m from the Richardson St Steps and the remaining 102 doing the full distance. The rivalries of the Thursday night Port Nelson series spilled over, with Luke Kelly and Hayden Squance continuing their battle at the front of the field. The 14-year-olds Sierra Thomas and Sophie Alexander were very close behind, grabbing the top women's spots. While the temperature and tide were perfect, the breeze meant that swimmers couldn't relax as they splashed past Magazine Point, Fifeshire Rock, the Richardson St Steps and Haulashore, with the surface flattening out over the final few hundred metres. Sierra was relentless behind Terry, chasing him all the way to finish a second behind in fourth place in 25min 29sec, a second ahead of Josh Sheridan, with Sophie four seconds further back. Yet another 14-year-old, Piper Riley, was the third woman to finish, stopping the clock in 26min 24sec, ahead of 54-year-old Christina Harris (28.18).

Slo-Pitch softball comes to Nelson Andrew Board Journalist

Slo-Pitch softball made its way to Nelson over the weekend, all in the name of fun and to remember a local stalwart of the game. Murray Williams played softball for Royals and the United Pirates during his time in Nelson. He died last year after a battle with cancer and good friend Don Glenin says he told him before he died that he would organise a tournament in his name. "Murray thought that would be pretty cool so we started putting it together." Don decided to make it a "Slo-Pitch" tournament,

As a young athlete in the North Island he won several athletics records and trained with Olympic middle distance champion Peter Snell. On the pitch, the final was played between the Overs and Unders and Double Jays. The scored were tied 10-10 after the allotted five innings so an extra innings was added which the Overs and Unders took advantage of, scoring five runs and retiring the Double Jays without scoring. Don says the tournament will "definitely" be back next year and he credited Nicky Mason with ensuring the tournament ran smoothly.

The Nelson Tigers got their claws on the Super Stoke Challenge Cup, taking the lead in the penultimate lap to send the home fans into raptures. The cup win over the Palmerston North Panthers at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway was the highlight of a busy night of racing on Saturday. There weren’t the huge wall rides but the hits were still hard with the Panthers unable to get a car across the finish line. They took over the lead half way through the race when the Panthers' blockers managed to hold up Alex Bright, who had led from the start. Shane Mellsop took over the race lead for the Panthers before import Peter Rees held him up with a lap and a half to go. Bright scooted around the outside of the duo to finish the final lap untouched for the epic win. The Tigers had started the race on the back foot early with Trevor Lineham suffering a collapsed right front suspension after being taken to the wall, but the Tigers rebounded, slamming Panther Bryn Liddell and ending his race and night with some major damage. Willie Humphries was the

He went in for a hit but was spun up before being collected and left parked into the wall. 2NZ Jordan Dare was the other Panther to get taken out over the start line with three laps to go, his gear lever popping out of the box, leaving him unable to move. Peter and Ethan Rees proved their credentials with some fine blocking on behalf of the Tigers while a relieved Alex Bright continued his good run, bringing the Tigers home for the win.

The heat races provided some fantastic racing. Six other Palmerston North cars made the trip down while ex 1NZ Malcolm Ngatai made the trip from Christchurch. He joined two other former NZ champions to make a class field seldom seen outside of the titles. It gave the local drivers some quality racing before they travel north for championships after Christmas. Heat wins went to Mellsop, Peter Bengston from Palmy and Ethan Rees. The Side Cars ran their Mark

Thorn Memorial Trophy with Aidie Drake and Kieran Satherley picking up another trophy to add to their collection. The final heat was held up for a bit after 88N machine got squeezed off the start, sending swinger Rosie Taylor airborne before landing with a thump. She was aided off the track by St Johns. The T.Qs got some valuable track time with round two of their club champs. Heat wins went to Dylan Stone-Cuthbert and Morgan Frost

before Jayden Corkill ran away with another feature win to close the points gap with a round to go. Speedway takes a break before Christmas with the next meeting scheduled for December 30. There is a street car race planned so if you want to have some fun and have an “old dunger” that won’t pass the mustard on the road, jump on the Nelson Speedway website and check out the entry criteria. It could be the most fun thing you do over summer.

WEDNESDAY 6 December 2017

Our annual road resealing programme is underway to ensure a safe and properly maintained road network. Work begins on roads in Richmond, followed by Brightwater and Wakefield, before breaking for the holiday period. Work will then resume in January, beginning in Murchison, followed by Waimea, Golden Bay, Riwaka and Tapawera. All the resealing is expected to be complete by the end of February. We try to minimise inconvenience for residents where possible, and respectfully ask everyone to be patient and follow any directions from the contractors on site. Please note that on-road parking will be restricted on work sites and there will be temporary limited access to property for pedestrians and vehicles during the construction.
