Region rocked by storm Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The region felt the full force of a major storm generated from ex-Tropical Cyclone Fehi last Thursday. While many people inland experienced a short period of heavy rain and wind, the region’s coastal areas bore the full impact of nature’s fury. Heavy rain, northerly gales up to 130km/hr and a king tide combined to leave much of the region’s coastline unrecognisable. “It was a serious storm, there is no question,” says Civil Defence group controller Roger Ball. He says that because the storm was a short duration, it was unlikely that it will be as serious in terms of damage as the large-scale storms that hit the region in 2010 and 2011. “We might find the dollar impact is lower. The infrastructure damage here seems to be on roads and cycleways,” he says. Three of the worst affected areas were Mapua, Ruby Bay and Monaco, with residents needing to be evacuated from the low-lying areas. Civil Defence centres were opened in Mapua and Monaco to help displaced residents. Ruby Bay residents Stephen, Sarah and Biddy Thomas were among those rescued. Sarah says that by 9am the water had already started splashing onto their property, and with another two hours before high tide, they knew that it

Region rocked by ex-Tropical Cyclone Fehi FROM PAGE 1 was going to bigger than anything they’d experienced before. “Once a log came over and broke our fence, then all the logs came in and broke our windows and everything came in our house.” The bottom floor of their house was knee-deep in water, but Sarah says that the family were lucky that they were able to go upstairs until the fire service arrived with kayaks to evacuate them. “We were there all morning … it was very frightening,” she says. “We’re trying to stay positive, but we’re shaken and just trying to think of what our next step is.” Police cordoned off access to Mapua Wharf as it was completely underwater, and power was out in Mapua for around 30 minutes due to tree bark on the lines. Contractors were also taking
pumps to Mapua to get water out of homes and off properties. Mapua resident Norman Clark says that his property was completed flooded within 10 minutes. “I don’t know what to do now. I shouldn’t be crying, but I am.” Five buildings in the Mapua area have been red-stickered by council for structural or sanitary reasons and several other properties are still being assessed. The king tide saw Lower Queen St closed as it was covered in water, as well as access to Nelson Airport being cut off. The Nelson Airport perimeter walkway suffered significant erosion and is closed indefinitely. Flooding in the Richmond West area also caused a failure at the Beach Rd sewerage pump station, resulting in an overflow of untreated sewage and stormwater contaminants into Nelson Haven and the

ily closed the island. The front beach at Rabbit Island has since reopened for swimming, but the area around the boat ramp road is still closed. Tasman’s Great Taste Trail also suffered extensive damage with sections of the trail missing in
some places and three boardwalks along the Waimea Estuary destroyed. Trail Journeys’ managing director Andrew Schwass rode around much of the cycle trail on Friday with Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail manager Josh Aldridge and says that while parts of the trail have been severely damaged, that it’s business as usual. “We’re getting plans in place for alternate routes and shuttling people to different parts of the trail. It’s less than 10 per cent of the trail, if that.” Andrew says that with the ferry running again on Sunday, they had a busy day. While Josh says that some tough decisions may need to be made and that they’ll be looking at all options, he’s heartened by offers of help to rebuild the boardwalks. Queen St upgrade resumes Queen St has enjoyed some much-needed activity over the past two months including one of the busiest Market Days ever, but the fences are going up once again as construction restarts this week. Construction on the $15million Queen St upgrade project began February 7, 2017, to replace old and undersized asbestos concrete water pipes, increase the town’s stormwater capacity and flood resilience, and replace old sewer lines. Stages one through three were completed prior to Christmas and, after a two-month reprieve, work on stage four resumes on February 7. “On Wednesday, Downer will begin work on Stage 4 – that’s the area from Sundial Square up to the Warring carpark entrance. It’s likely to be a busy period on the roads as many school children are also returning for the year, so it’s important people are aware that part of Queen St will be closed to vehicles,” says project manager Jeff Robinson. Stage one was beset with delays and cost over-runs, but Jeff says that a lot of work has been done to develop mitigation plans and be as prepared as possible for the next stages. “The key advantage is that we don’t have any old concrete stormwater pipes to remove,

Vehicle access would be restricted, however Queen St businesses would still be open with pedestrian access at all times and carparking on much of the street itself and in the off-street public carparks. Richmond Unlimited chairperson Marina Buonocore says that there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel and hopes that the community will continue to support the local businesses. “The community have been incredibly supportive and, before we know it, it will be done. I’ve heard nothing but positive comments about the complet-

ed part of Queen St – it looks brilliant,” she says. The final three stages are due to be completed by the end of May, which Marina notes is less than four months away. While the remaining works have been divided into three stages, Jeff says that they are providing the contractors with greater flexibility this time to enable works to progress as smoothly as possible. “The benefits will be felt for a long time to come, so I hope people can look forward to the final result and continue to support our local retailers, cafes and the like while we work towards that goal.” Construction updates can be found at www.tasman.govt.nz/ queen-street.

Cheryl Gascoyne never imagined that her reusable bag idea would take off quite like it has, but within a few short weeks it has turned into a regional project raising funds for Hospice. In an effort to eliminate the use of plastic bags at the Richmond Hospice Shop, Cheryl volunteered to sew reusable bags using fabric that had been donated. However, the bags started “selling like hot cakes”, so Cheryl put out a call for more volunteers. “The article in the Waimea Weekly generated so much interest that it’s nearly gotten away on me,” says Cheryl. “My problem is, despite saying in the article that I have sufficient fabric to distribute, the fact is that I just can’t supply enough due to the response so far.” Cheryl is delighted with the number of talented volunteers she’s had, including members of the Waimea Nelson Inner Wheel club. President Sharon Martin, who is a former Hospice Shop volunteer, invited Cheryl to come and talk to the club about the project. “We have a project each year that we support, and this was a great opportunity for the sewers in our group to help such a good cause,” says Sharon. Seamstress Judy Sargent says that she’s always sewn and is looking forward to making bags to support Hospice at home, as well as at the monthly Inner Wheel working bees. “I really appreciate their experience, and hopefully their bags will be even better than mine,” says Cheryl. Cheryl is now working with regional volunteer coordinator Rebecca Colley to enable the project to expand to supply bags to all four Hospice shops, but is looking for more fabric as well as more volunteers. “I have no way to meet the demand at this stage,” Cheryl says. “A number of volunteers came into the shop and I was a bit overwhelmed so have lost the details for some of them, but now Rebecca and I have a system in place so I’m hoping they’ll come back in.” Cheryl says that they desperately need more fabric, particularly heavyweight cottons and furnishing materials as well as fabric for lining, but no stretch, thermal-backed or lightweight dressmaking fabrics. People who want to sew or donate fabric can ring the Richmond Hospice shop on 543 7017 or Rebecca on 546 3912.

This year’s Nelson Wine and Food Festival being held at Middle-Earth Wines is unashamedly ‘local’, according to organisers. “It’s local wines, local food, local music and local organisers putting on a local event at a great local venue,” says Richmond Rotary’s Peter Glue. Last year, Nayland College students conducted a survey with a view to moving the event to a different venue. However, Peter says that the response from attendees was a resounding ‘no’. “Don’t change, keep it local, keep it at the winery, was the overwhelming response,” says Peter. “So that’s exactly what we’re doing – keeping it local.” Set at the stunning Middle-Earth vineyards, Peter says that the grounds are looking great and he’s delighted that the public agree that it’s the perfect venue. Middle-Earth owners Rob Grey and Ryan O’Connell say that they love being able to support the iconic event. “Four generations of our family have lived in Brightwater, so it is an honour to host this well-loved community event,” says Ryan. The all-day event features entertainment from Kramit, Cruise

Colleges start year on record high rolls having increased but it wouldn’t surprise me if we were ten or more in deficit, so we’re acutely worried about that.” One of the new teaching spaces is under construction with the second scheduled to start shortly. The third project is a two-storey block of six classrooms. They have also had to turn away 70 out-of-zone families this enrolment season, which Scott says is “unfortunate”. “I really feel for them, because obviously, if they want to come to Waimea College for whatever reason, we’d like to be able to accommodate that and it’s really hard having those conversations,” says Scott. “For the first time ever, we’ve also reached the 42-student
Some secondary schools in the Nelson region are bursting at the seams with one college having to turn away families only to have desperate parents come back after buying homes in the zone. Colleges started back last week, and this year Waimea College is under “significant pressure”, according to principal Scott Haines. “Waimea College started this year with a roll of 1614 students, which is well up from the previous high that we had last year of 1575,” says Scott. “In August last year, the Ministry of Education undertook to build eight new teaching spaces for us, by December last year we were nine teaching spaces in deficit. “I don’t know what the current figure is with the roll
cap for our Special Education Department and are unable to accept out-of-zone special education students.” But some families are going as far as moving house just to get into the college. “When we bring the zone map out and try and explain why they can’t enrol here, some families will just say ‘fine, we’ll just buy a house in the zone’. “I had a father a couple of weeks ago, who I had that exact conversation with, say ‘here’s the enrolment form for my son, I’ll be back within the week with the deed to a property’ and that’s exactly what he did.” Garin College has also had a jump in its roll and has seven new teachers. “Garin is experiencing positive annual roll growth, with
an opening roll this year of 526 up on our roll of 515 students in 2017,” says principal John Maguire. He says the most significant roll growth is occurring at year nine with 99 new students, but they are “well placed” for further increases. Meanwhile, Nayland College has seen their highest intake of year nines in more than a decade. “We have 270 year nine students joining us this year, with an overall roll increase,” says Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson. “We have 60 new students joining us at other year levels, eight new staff and an increase in international students.” Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls have both reported stable rolls.
For ages 16 to under 20. Educational programmes are delivered under sub-contracted agreement with the National Council of YMCA’s of New Zealand (NZQA PTE).

Not-so-new new owners Judene Edgar
Buoyed by their successes last year, Colourplus Richmond coowners John and Trish Gray are proud to become the award-winning shop’s sole owners. A 10-year partnership with Kevin and Nicola Gear saw Colourplus Richmond return from its annual conference last year with two major awards – Store of the Year in the window treatments category, as well as the Supreme Shop award. “Working in partnership with Kevin and Nicola has been a great opportunity,” says John. “Our point of difference is service – personalised, customer-focused, service and advice – and that’s not going to change.” For Trish, it’s businesses as usual,
as she’s already been managing the drapes and blinds sales, whereas John will be stepping aside from installation and paint sales so that he can be full-time in the shop. “We have a new guy coming on board to take over installations from John,” says Trish. While John and Trish say that it’s business as usual, they are looking forward to some new opportunities and new directions. “We’ve got a great team around us and we’re excited about the future,” says Trish. As well as being customer-focussed, John and Trish are keen to retain the business’s communityfocus, supporting the work of the Fifeshire Foundation. “I like that they help people in need and every cent goes back into the community,” says John.

Aquatic centre preps TRYathletes Jessie Johnston The Weet-Bix TRYathlon is a rite of passage for many Kiwi children, and for the second year running Richmond Aquatic Centre is helping local kids reach the finish line. TRY-Swimming, TRY-Biking, TRY-Running is perfect practice for Weet-Bix TRYathletes and involves sessions twice a week throughout February. “We’ll be doing swim sessions with them, giving them tips about how to swim and getting them to swim through waves in the centre’s wave pool,” says Richmond Aquatic Centre’s Lisa Stove. “Then we do a couple of sessions with bikes. Our instructors are triathletes and will be giving the kids advice on how to make that transition, as well as getting off their bike for the run.” The last session is tide and parent dependent and will involve a trip to Tahunanui Beach, so the budding athletes can get a visual of the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon course. “A lot of kids can have issues with the sea swim, they can get confused or scared, so we explain exactly what happens, they swim the distance in the sea and then we walk to the bike station and to where they’ll be running,” says Lisa. Sessions will be held on a Monday and Wednesday, from 6pm when the pool is less busy, with kids required to book a place in the training programme. “We are always training kids to be happy in any water sport, not just swimming, so throughout the programme we’re involving aspects of water safety, teaching them how to stay safe if something does go wrong. Plus, we have the professionals here who can help the kids learn how to race,” says Lisa. “We’re also there for them on the day, cheering them on.” For more information on the training programme or to book your child a place, call the Richmond Aquatic Centre today on 543 9755.

A very special fundraising event takes place each year on the lovely green outskirts of Richmond. The Nelson Vintage Car Club’s annual swap meet is gearing up to be popular again this year, attracting vintage car enthusiasts and members of the public from all over the region and beyond. ‘It literally used to be a ‘swap session’ but now it’s more about selling things,’ says organiser Jim Wareing. ‘Maybe it’s antique wears such as crockery or toys, or perhaps it’s old vinyl records or sewing crafts, but the main priority is car and motorbike commercial parts. People can buy a site for fifteen dollars, and for that you get a six by six site. We hope to get around 120 stalls.’ The Nelson Vintage Car Club has been going strong since 1964 and was formed by a group of Canterbury University students. ‘One of them is still alive, is in his 90’s, and continues to attend meetings and con-

Swap Meet & Market Sale
Judene Edgar After a bit of a shaky start to planning for this year’s 98th Murchison A and P Show, organisers are, once again, looking forward to a great country day out. Late last year the organising committee didn’t have sufficient numbers to run another show and were close to pulling the plug. “We didn’t want to cancel, especially so close to celebrating our 100th show,” says committee member Sue Cooper. “We had some amazing volunteers step up so we’re looking forward to another fantastic two-day event.” While the main annual A and P Show is on Saturday, February 17, due to the number of equestrian events, these will take place over two days. “We’ve become a horse-of-theyear qualifying event, which is great for local riders,” says Sue. “Show day is mainly jumping and in-hand led horses, which is always popular, with day two being the ring and championship riding classes.” Organisers are also delighted that this year features the twoday South Island Wood Chopping championships. There will be two days of non-stop single saw, double saw, tree felling, underhand, team races and Jack and Jill action, start-

How Great Thou Art exhibition Judene Edgar
The glamour of advertising agencies was played out in the critically acclaimed TV series ‘Mad Men’, but it was this very world that Richmond artist Randall Froude chose to walk away from. Originally trained at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, Randall went on to establish a successful advertising career listing big multinational companies such as Tip Top, Ford and Watties as just some of his clients. Feeling stifled by the high-pressure commercial advertising industry, he took a day off and decided to do some art “just for fun”. “I had so much fun doing art that I liked, that soon I dropped to a four-day week, and then a three-day week, and eventually I never went back to work,” he says. That was about 40 years ago and Randall says that he’s never regretted it. In fact, his commercial background helped
him launch a successful career which has seen him in international exhibitions around the globe, tutor more than 3500 students and commissioned by Royal Albert China. But this weekend he’ll be back doing what he loves – painting, and helping others to unlock their creativity. Randall is one of 17 artists, ranging from beginners through to other commercially-acclaimed artists, who will be exhibiting at the How Great Thou Art exhibition later this week. Randall will be doing a demonstration painting throughout the exhibition as well as running mini-seminars at 2pm on the Friday and Saturday. “We all have gifts, mine are on show, but we often just need to unlock what we already have,” he says. “Everything starts from a small beginning – even the biggest river starts with a trickle – little ideas and dreams can turn into big things. I want to impart
what I can at the exhibition to artists and visitors.” This is the second year for the exhibition being run by the Richmond Baptist Church, which is raising funds for Ma’s Place, a drop-in centre for parents with young babies, and the Parents and Children Together (PACT) family counselling service. Organiser Sue Birchfield says that they raised over $2000 last year and she’s hoping this year will be just as successful. “There will be Devonshire teas for sale, as well as receiving a commission on any art sales,” she says. “We have more artists exhibiting this year as well as a cash n’ carry section with smaller prints and artworks for people to choose from.” How Great Thou Art Exhibition is on at the Richmond Baptist Church, 123 Salisbury Rd, Richmond, Friday, February 9, from 10am to 8pm and Saturday, February 10, from 10am to 4pm. Waimea Irrigators Limited (WIL) is proposing to form a company with Tasman District Council to provide a long-term water supply solution for the Waimea basin and surrounding areas. The company will be known as Waimea Water Limited. As of 8 February, WIL will offer water shares to landowners and lessees holding ground water permits and/or surface water permits in a defined part of the Waimea Plains.
Why you should consider becoming a shareholder Shareholders will • Be able to affiliate their existing permit under the Tasman Resource Management Plan, which will greatly improve the reliability of water available from the existing groundwater sources, • Provide equity funding for WIL to fund its interest in Waimea Water to construct and operate a dam in the Lee Valley, known as the Waimea Community Dam • Be able to expect a secure supply of water for irrigation and other purposes except in periods of extreme drought. The Dam will be a community asset providing water for irrigators, an expanding urban population and improvement in the river environment.

This pavilion-style home is a must see. Expansive glass and nine skylights bring in the surrounding landscape, while 100% cedar cladding is beautiful now and will only improve with age. At 228m2 with three large bedrooms and separate living areas, there is more than enough room for the family to spread out and enjoy this stunning home. Come inside. As you walk along the boardwalk to a fern-lined entranceway, you’ll notice a glass front door which throws light across polished concrete floors in the 2.7m studd living areas. The incredible kitchen has features to burn, including a pyrolytic oven and induction hob, stone benchtops with Jarrah trim and features that tie back to a floating wallcabinet in the entranceway. The splashback is a window that looks out to native bush on the 800m2 site, while a cornerless kitchen wall opens up to possibly the best Kwilla patio and portico in Richmond. A pizza oven enhances the indoor outdoor living space, where you can entertain or relax bathed in late evening sun. to do that many laps. The one South Islander who could possibly be a threat would be Cantabrian Jeremy Webb who is consistently fast and has successfully spent time of late racing Midgets in Auckland over the last few months. That amount of seat time should bode well for the six time South Island champion. Possible Nelson drivers who could be at the sharp end after the dust settles are Alicia McLauchlan, Darkie Armstrong, Dylan Stone-Cuthbert, Luke Dilworth, Morgan Frost and Jayden Corkill, who have all shown that they have good pace at certain

times through this season and would love nothing better than a good result in front of a home crowd. Of course you can’t discount those from that other island up north either, as the maestro of TQ racing Duane Todd from the Hawkes Bay has no fewer than two New Zealand titles under his belt along with a 2NZ and a 3NZ to go with them. I’m sure that Duane and the current 2NZ Kaleb Currie from Auckland would want for nothing less than that 1NZ on their tail tank after the weekend’s racing. At the time of writing there are a total of 14 Nelson cars
entered along with another 14 from Christchurch, 12 from Auckland, two from the Hawkes Bay and four from Greymouth, giving us a total of forty-six. On the finals night on Saturday, February 10, the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway will also be hosting the Jacks Tyres and Performance South Island Midget championship alongside the New Zealand TQ title where the best of the best in South Island Midgets will be here to wrestle away the coveted title and try and steal the show from the TQ guys and girls. It’s a dream night for all the

Classes racing over the two nights are TQ’s, Midgets, Stockcars, Youth Ministocks and Sidecars on the Friday, while the Saturday night sees the TQ’s, Midgets, Superstock (Club Champs), Sidecars and Production Saloons take to the track. Wayne Martin The best that New Zealand has to offer in Three Quarter Midget racing (affectionately known as TQ’s) descend on the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway for the 2017/18 Walker Engineering New Zealand TQ Championship this week. Close to fifty drivers have put their names forward for the biggest event on the TQ calendar with twelve cars entered from Auckland alone. The TQ class has seen a resurgence here in Nelson over the last few seasons with numbers and quality of local machines on the rise. The championship will be spread over two nights with the qualifying heats on Friday, February 9, starting at 7pm, and the C, B and A main feature races on the Saturday starting at 6pm.
Proud supporters of Top of the South Speedway
The format is a tricky one to explain, but it works great for both drivers and fans alike as your favourite driver may have a dud race but still has an outside chance of making the A main feature. The winner of this final race takes home the $2000 prize money as well as being crowned the New Zealand champion. Night One: Qualifying heats. All competitors will be split into five groups, each group will race each other for four heats accumulating points as they go. This means that every driver races against each other over that night’s racing. Heat races will be 12 laps. Night Two: Finals night. The twenty top qualifiers go straight to the A main final while the next ten qualifiers get added to the B main list. The rest race in the C main first and after the completion of that race the top four place getters transfer into
the B main race later in the programme. From the B main the four top finishing cars get to tansfer to the 30 lap A main feature race. To make things even more interesting, the top eight qualifiers from the first night’s racing get to race in a six lap dash. This race will determine which grid they will start off in the big 30 lap A main feature race. So the eighth placed car could move up to a front row grid for the big race if everything goes their way in the dash race. As mentioned before, the Nelson cars no longer make up the numbers in this fine field and a handful of locals should be able to get in the A main and be a threat for at least one of the podium spots at the end of the nights racing. The one thing that might go against them is that it’s a 30 lap final and most of the South Island cars don’t normally get

Tasman Utd back to winning ways Andrew Board Journalist
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A Paul Ifill hat-trick has helped Tasman United to an important 5-2 win in today’s ISPS Handa Premiership match against Hawke’s Bay at Saxton Field. After Tasman led two goals to nil for most of the game, an incredible five goals were scored in the final ten minutes of the match, but Tasman’s
lead was never threatened. Tasman’s opener came in the fourth minute after a sloppy back pass from a Hawke’s Bay United player was pounced upon by Tasman striker Makksym Kowal. Tasman’s second was Paul Ifill’s first after a corner in the 28th minute was bundled in. That 2-0 score line remained until the 79th minute when Hawke’s Bay got back into the game with a goal, but that only opened the flood gates at
the other end. Two strikes from Ifill and another from Lyle Matthysen were bookended by a Hawke’s Bay penalty to blow the final score out to 5-2. Tasman coach Davor Tavich says it was an important win for his side. "It was important for the fans, important for the players, an important home win." Tasman next play Eastern Suburbs in Auckland this Sunday.

Nelson rep tennis players win back Blair Cup Nelson has wrestled back the under 18 representative Blair Cup after beating Marlborough 12 games to four over the weekend. The Talley's Nelson team travelled to Blenheim to try and win the cup back for the first time in two years. The team took charge early on winning three out of the four doubles matches.
Nelson number one boys doubles pairs Oscar Symonds and Alex Brogan brought on their ‘A’ game, coming back from one set down to take the second and keeping their cool in the super tie break to close the door on opponents Torban Otaway and Cameron Lyons, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. The singles leg followed in the same vein, Nelson taking six of
the eight matches. Recent addition to the team, Jackson King-Powell, stood out with his big serve and effective forehand proving lethal to his opponent, Cameron Lyons, King Powell winning 6-3, 6-2. All four Nelson girls won their singles games with relative ease, putting Nelson in an uncatchable position with the mixed doubles still to play.

McGazza Tribute ride On Thursday evening over 120 keen mountainbike riders gathered at the top of the people’s choice mountainbike track at Silvan Forest in Richmond. They were there for a tribute ride to commemorate the passing of Kelly McGarry two years earlier. The riders joined together to show respect to Kelly, Nelson’s premier mountainbike rider. Kelly gained worldwide attention after back flipping a 72-foot cannon gap at Utah,
America, in the Redbull rampage event. In another show of respect, the riders didn’t let the terrible weather put them off, as the rain would never have deterred Kelly. Kelly passed away doing what he loved best while mountainbiking in Queenstown on February 1, 2016. The Tribute ride was organised by Matt Goodall, a childhood friend of Kelly. At the top of the hill the riders gathered and heard personal stories from
Damian Stones, a close friend of Kelly’s. He talked of how Kelly and he built pump tracks and jumps, including the Auckland Point School pump track. The riders then set off, heading down the linking tracks in a uniform line. The riders included young children through to experienced riders. The riders expressed their thanks to the Silvan MTB Trials Trust for helping the tribute ride run so smoothly.
“It’s a unique, alpine experience racing at altitude,” says club president Charmaine Payn. “We have teams coming from Nelson, Golden Bay, Motueka, Marlborough, Canterbury, lower North Island, Dunedin and even the United Kingdom, to compete.” Contestants and teams of all ages and experience, from novice to Golden Masters, will compete for a range of honours. This year all participants will be especially honoured, receiving a 10th anniversary medal sponsored by Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, whose kaumatua will open the event on the Friday afternoon. “The opening is always a memorable activity for spectators and participants alike,” says Charmaine. The annual regatta has helped to strengthen the Nelson competitors from Maitahi and Whakatu Marae clubs, who continue to shine with growing national and international successes. Charmaine says that she is also amazed at the
The passion of one man, Greg Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, sparked a nation’s interest in waka ama, when the master carver sailed his hand-carved, double-hulled waka, without any modern navigational instruments, from Tahiti to Okahu Bay in Auckland in 1985. Today, there are 94 waka ama clubs throughout New Zealand and it is the fastest growing water sport in the country. There are five clubs across the top of the south – Maitahi Outrigger Canoe and Whakatu Marae clubs in Nelson, as well as clubs in Motueka, Takaka and Picton. Nelson’s Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club is celebrating its 10th annual waka ama race at Lake Rotoiti this weekend, and they are looking forward to a fantastic turn-out. Maitahi’s annual regatta, Tuna e hoe Ana, which literally means paddling with the eels, is the only waka ama racing event held at altitude, some 620 metres above sea level.
standard and number of rangitahi, or youth, competing in waka ama. “Waka ama fits in ideally with our Kiwi lifestyle, so it attracts paddlers of all ages,” she says. The event features a series of races for one-person, two-person and six-person waka ama, over 5km and 10km distances. Spectators and supporters also get a chance to have a paddle, in a fun waka ama race for the public at midday on the Saturday. Anyone interested in taking part in the fun race should meet at 11.45am at the regatta registration tent in Kerr Bay. All participants will be provided with the required equipment and safety gear, as well as some basic instructions. The Tasman Harbourmaster will also be there on the day, supporting water safety. For more information go to www.maitahi-outrigging.org. nz. The official opening is on Friday, February 9, at 4pm with races starting at 5pm. Racing continues all day Saturday and Sunday.

Dominik Berghamer with a nice snapper.
Competition time
Dominik Berghamer The snapper finally seem to be done with their love-making and are starting to feed again. The warm water temperatures (24 degrees throughout the Bay) are not ideal but the weather forecast predicts cooler temperatures over the next week. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club and its members are in the final stages of preparations for their annual Snapper Cup which will take place on the 17th of February. It’s going to be even bigger than last year with over $10,000 worth of prizes to be won! Our sponsors were so generous this year that there will be prizes not only for the snapper caught, but also for kahawai, gurnard and kingfish and, of course, there will be junior categories and major spot prizes as well!
Just like last year, an early start will most likely be the key to success - almost all snapper were landed before 7 am. A good burley trail, stealth, and light gear, are other main factors that will improve your chances of catching some of these shy fish. Try different baits - squid is always amongst the favourites, but also offer fish baits and, especially if the sharks are abundant, paddle crabs or prawns. Flasher rigs, stray lines and light baited slow jigs seem to work best, and some specialists also have had good success with softbaits. The Snapper Cup is only open to Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members, but if you join now you will get the competition entry for free! Register online and find out more info on www. dawnbreakers.co.nz.

Snapper love current. A strong current undermines the edges of channels and drop-offs uncovering the worms, crabs and shellfish that the fish prey on. So the snapper are more active, and when they are more active they are moving, and in a feeding mode. This makes them more likely to encounter your bait, and much more likely to eat it.

The scheduled completion date is the end of May 2018. The work for 2018 will kick off with the replacement of the remaining undersized stormwater pipe up through the Salisbury Road roundabout. At the same time, Stage 4 construction works will start from just past Sundial Square up to the Richmond Night 'n Day dairy – the remaining underground pipes will be replaced and the street surface rebuilt to the new, flood-minimising design. Street remains open Queen Street will remain open for business! Pedestrian access to shops will be open at all times during the day, and at least one footpath will always be accessible at night also. There’s heaps of off-street parking as well as onstreet parking in the areas not under construction. Please continue to support our local businesses through the remaining works. Vehicle access and road closures The area from just past Sundial Square up to the Richmond Night and Day will be closed to traffic. There will also be partial road closures on different parts of the street from the dairy up to Salisbury Road as the stormwater and water pipe replacement work progresses. Proposed Richmond and Motueka Town Centre parking strategy We want to know how you think we should manage town centre parking in Richmond and Motueka for the next decade or so. Our proposed plan to meet these objectives includes a range of options for the short, medium and long-term. The short-term plan includes measures such as introducing seasonal time restrictions, changing the layout of existing public carparks for maximum efficiency, improving enforcement, prioritising parking for carpoolers, improving walking and cycling networks and investing in public transport – amongst other things.

School's back Over the next week children and their families will once again walking and cycling to and from school – for some this will be their first experience of this journey. Please slow down around and near schools. For drivers; please remember the speed limit past a stationary school bus is 20kmh, regardless of which side of the road you are on. Look out for the school crossing patrols and also other pedestrian crossings. For children; a bike helmet is a must every time on a bike, buckle up in the car every time and if they are under seven years old they have to be in a properly fitted child restraint.

Hey, thanks Tasman!
We are now fully booked for pool installations this summer.
BUT we are co-ordinating our installation schedule for this
winter so you can have your new pool operational for our next hot summer. So, give us a call. Lets sit down and discuss what we can offer, the huge range available and just when we can install. And don’t forget, all of our pools carry a 25 year guarantee and are built for New Zealand conditions.
SpecialiStS in gateS
In fact gates and fences galore! Auto-sliding and swing gates, domestic, commercial and security. And don’t forget our pool fencing made to council certification. Custom made so, if you have a pattern or a theme, we can do it. We can also install our gates and fences so we know the jobs done right and we use only qualified tradesman. And balustrades as well. Glass, all varieties and hand rails for indoor and outdoor. We also provide prompt and efficient powder-coating facilities. We have our own in-house purpose-built powder-coating facilities. The New Gate Company not only powder coat gates, fences and balustrades, but can also a variety of items such as motorbike frames, sprint cars, doors, steel or aluminium. Just give us a call we can come around and advise and provide a great quote.
