Big plans for Grape Escape Judene Edgar The popular Grape Escape complex near Richmond is set to get a makeover with new owners planning a farmer’s market, boutique retail and food shops on the three hectare site on the corner of State Highway 60 and McShane Rd. The Conning family purchased the Grape Escape in July last year and last week Simon Conning announced plans to start developing the Appleby Village complex as soon as the building consents are approved. The plans include a 600 square metre farmers market building which will be open in 18 months, as well as plans to increase the size of the existing plant nursery, Enhance with Plants. The existing retail shops and cheese shop will remain on site and there are long-term plans for six new retail shops with a further two buildings earmarked for dining and entertaining. The development does not include the Grape Escape Cafe which was subdivided off from the rest of the property before the sale last year. “We are aiming to have local produce but are aware that we will have to bring in some outside produce to fill seasonal gaps”, Simon says. “We want to create a destination with fresh produce; somewhere nice that celebrates all things local”.

A right-Royal occasion for Henley Kindergarten Simon Bloomberg She may be a lot younger than Queen Elizabeth II and her chauffeur was only driving a Nissan Pulsar instead of the royal’s regular Bentley limousine, but as far as the children

at Henley Kindergarten were concerned, Trish Gargiulo was the real thing when she posed as the Queen at the kindy on Friday. Trish has been impersonating Queen Elizabeth II almost every year for the last 25 years

for the Queen’s annual Queens Birthday visit to the kindy. The former Henley Kindy teacher even continued the tradition when she was living in Auckland for six years, flying down to Nelson especially for the royal visits.

“There have only been a few impersonators over the years,’ Trish jokes. “I lived overseas for three years so I didn’t come back then, but I’ve been the Queen almost every other year

Big plans for Grape Escape FROM PAGE 1 In addition to their own produce they want to facilitate other local growers, producers and artisans to join them at the site, so what happens and when, “depends on who else wants to come on board”, Simon says. While the initial plan involves fresh fruit and vegetables, ultimately, they want the complex to sell fresh meat, bread and dairy as well as local arts and crafts, and an evening dining experience with local craft beer and wine. The five-year plan to deliver fresh produce direct from the grower is a real family venture and adventure, Simon says. The Conning family have been market

gardening on the Waimea Plains with parents Robbie and Cheryl growing on approximately 120ha at Hope for nearly four decades. This time the entire family is involved, with brothers Toby and Ben and their families joining Simon and his partner Léa Benoist and their parents on the exciting new plans. Simon started the shop as a way of reducing the waste that he sees in the industry. He says good quality fruit and vegetables are often discarded because of supermarket policies. “Being local reduces transportation time, cost and waste, which means it will be cheaper because we’re selling direct”.

It’s also a good opportunity for the children to learn about ceremonies and how to behave in these situations.” There was also a suggestion that Trish keeps returning because she likes being treated like a Queen. She obviously enjoyed being called Your Majesty and smiled happily as adoring children showered her with bouquets. And it was clear from all the children’s bows and curtsies that they had been taught how to act in royal company. The children, teachers and parents also dressed for the royal occasion as did kindy’s administrator Jenny Eden who was disguised as the Queen’s chauffeur.

Honoured for helping those at Hospice Charles Anderson When Mary Garner first started working for Nelson Tasman Hospice 30 years ago there were only six volunteers, now there are more than 400. She arrived in 1987, when the hospice began, to take over coordinating volunteers. It was a time when the hospice movement was still in its infancy. “We had everything for people coming into this world but nothing for people going out of it,” Mary says. So she started with a “blank canvas” in caring for those who were dying. “I knew some of the basic services I wanted but a lot of it came from really good people who turned up and just offered their help.” Mary has now been recognised for her work by being made a Companion of the Queen's Service Order, as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Since 2002, the hospice has recorded more than 8,000 volunteer referrals and her contributions have left “an enduring, positive impact on the local community,” according to her citation. Mary Garner has been made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for her work with the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Hospice is now an integral part of the community and volunteers are essential to its mission. “I think everybody should be a volunteer - it gives something back to the community.” Volunteers are involved in everything from life story writing, massage, hairdressing and building wheelchair ramps. “It’s good for the soul to volunteer,” Mary says. Dr Lesley Rhodes was also honoured, made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her work with the Cawthron Institute and “revo-

lutionising the management of marine algal blooms and biotoxins in shellfish”. Bernadette Gavin, of Nelson, was made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for advocating for gender equality for more than 40 years. There were also several local recipients of the Queen's Service Medal. Dave Hansford, of Moutere, was recognised for his work advocating for the environment through various media for many years. Barry Pomeroy was recognised for his work with Returned Service Associations across the region, including playing the bugle at ANZAC Day parades and services from 1954 until 2006. Julian Shields was recognised for setting up the Nelson branch of Habitat for Humanity in 1995, a worldwide notfor-profit organisation which aims to build houses for families in need. Karen Stade was recognised for her service to local history - which included her involvement in the Nelson Historical Society and her work creating exhibitions and book projects on local communities and people.

Students prepare for an emergency Judene Edgar Richmond School students saw just how fast the volunteer fire brigade responds to a real live emergency call out during a demonstration by the region’s emergency services at the school on Thursday. The Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, Search and Rescue, St John Ambulance and Civil Defence crews visited the school as part of the whole school’s study on disasters. All the emergency service crews held demonstrations for the students, including an unscheduled real live one when the fire brigade had to leave in a big hurry to respond to a call. But like true professionals they returned to the school after the call. Teacher Tracey Krammer, who organised the day, says the demonstrations are “a cool way to get the whole school community on board with the kids’ learning. It’s especially great for kids who find learning more difficult.” Xavier Warren thought that the ‘stop, drop and hold’ message during an earthquake was particularly important because “you can’t stop a natural disaster”. Olivia Knapp says the Search and Rescue talk was the most enjoyable because “they had a cute puppy and when someone is lost they use walkie talkies to talk.”

Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Alex Theobald, left, and Simon Childerhouse with Richmond Primary School children, from left, Liam Childerhouse, Freya Childerhouse, Coby Davis, Quinn Heiford, Logan Corcoran and Bella Douglas during the school’s emergency services day last Thursday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Hannah Percy was most taken with the Fire Brigade’s jaws of life. “They can use tools to cut open cars after a car crash”. Fire fighter Sam Oliver says that he came down to the school because “it’s all about helping out the community and raising awareness”.

The school held a gold coin trail so that a donation could be made to each of the emergency services. “We wanted to thank them for coming today and for the service they provide to the community”, Tracey says. “It is important that the students learn that these services are run

by volunteers; they are leaving their jobs to help us”. The students were able to see that the volunteers are everyday members of our community including Richmond Fire Brigade volunteer Simon Childerhouse who was there, dressed in his full fire-fighting equipment, to the

delight of his children Liam and Freya. School families are also involved with the students, learning about emergency kit preparation. The children are taking that information home and putting together an emergency and disaster response kit with their families.

Judene Edgar Competitive dodgeball, parkour, circus skills, sports photography and phone apps were just some of the pitches made by students in the Dragon’s Den-style session at Sport Tasman’s inaugural Youth Speak Sport Summit last Thursday. Over 30, Year 9 and 10 students attended the Summit which was aimed at gathering youth insights and perspectives around how to encourage youth in sport and active recreation. Sport Tasman’s Lesley McIntosh says a key aim of the Summit was for it “to be facilitated by young people for young people and enhance leadership skills in the younger generation, and give youth a voice”. Youth councillors from Murchison and Nelson helped organise the day and were on hand to mentor the students. The day included a series of workshops and talks on the themes of sport in school, club sport and community recreation. Teams worked together to choose the top six pitches with competitive dodgeball winning the day. The winning pitch was from Lochie Quigley from Nelson College and Louie Morris from Motueka High School. “Who doesn’t like throwing a ball at someone you don’t like”, says Lochie. Second prize went to Georgina Palmer from Waimea College and Chris Davis from Motueka High School for their ‘parkour park’ idea, third prize to Poppy Ellis and Elyse Hopkins from Golden Bay High School for their ‘circus skills in schools’ concept and a special prize to Milan Chapman and Lucy Chung for their app idea. “It was a really valuable learning activity for everyone involved”, says Lesley.

Amy helping to make the perfect mentor match Simon Bloomberg Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson’s new staff member Amy Trembath is not only getting the chance to put theory into practise in her new role as mentoring coordinator, she is also learning a lot from the job. Amy started as part-time mentoring co-ordinator at the end of March and has been busy managing the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme between Waimea College and Henley School. Although Amy has already completed her BA at the University of Canterbury and is now studying for a Masters in Social Work, she says she is gaining just as much knowledge from her new job. “I’m really enjoying the role and the opportunity to apply some of the theory I’ve learned at university,” she says. “But I’ve also learned so much since I’ve been here, and I’ve been using that

practical knowledge and applying it to my studies.” Amy says Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates “nearly 200 matches” between mentors and young people who need additional support in Nelson and Tasman. One of Amy’s responsibilities is coordinating the school-based teen programme which pairs year 12 students at Waimea College with primary school children, and she says it’s been a big success. “We are looking at expanding the programme because there’s such a big demand for it. It’s really satisfying because you see so much potential in the children and the positive difference it’s making to their lives. “I also really enjoy working with the college students. They are all high achievers and really busy, but they still give up their free time to do something positive for these kids.” Amy says the school-based teen

Henley principal John Armstrong says the school-based teen programme is “brilliant” and their students “really look up to the year 12 and 13s”. “It’s neat having them around the school and it really does make a big difference,” John says. Big Brother and Big Sisters has

a waiting list of 40 children who need mentors, with 30 of those being boys. Anyone who is interested in becoming a mentor or thinks their child would benefit from being mentored can go to the website bigbrothersbigsistersnelson.org.nz or contact Chelsea Routhan on 03 545 9864.

UEEN STREET

Finishing touches on Stage 1 streetscape set to start This week the construction will reach a milestone (weather permitting) as contractor Downer begins work to replace the street surface in Stage 1 to the new, pedestrian-friendly design. All the underground pipes and services are now in place – new stormwater and water pipes, as well as fibre and power cables.

and take a look, let the kids doodle on the chalkboards and check out their reflection in the stretchy mirrors while you visit the shops.

A big part of the new street design for Stage 1 is construction of a roundabout at the junction of McIndoe Place and Queen Street, to better manage traffic flows at this increasingly busy intersection.

Keep in mind:

What’s on the box? Part of the Stage 2 works are enclosed by a construction “box” to keep noise and dust to a minimum for pedestrians. The “box”, made up of white panels, is now home to colourful chalkboards, information about the upgrade and reality-altering mirrors – and there’s more to come. There are also windows into the construction zone if you’re interested in what’s happening within the box. Head down

• Queen Street businesses are open as usual and the footpath remains open through the construction zone • Queen Street is closed to vehicles from Gladstone Road up to Noel Leeming, so there is no access to or from McIndoe Place • Extra P60 and P120 time limits are now in force in the Papps carpark • Free all day parking is available at the Richmond Showgrounds • The ring road is a great option for avoiding any delays and to access public parking just a short walk from the shops.

Craft Potters potty about dogs Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Members of the Craft Potters are big fans of the Nelson Ark, so it was a foregone conclusion that they would donate the proceeds from their Love of Clay Day to the Ark. Craft Potters held Love of Clay Day on March 26 and raised $460 from their annual fund-raising open day. Last week, they handed over a cheque for that amount to the Nelson Ark with Craft Potters president Danny Sugar saying they donated the funds to the Ark because “they are very cool.” “We all love animals and we love their work,” Danny says. “They do such a good job for the dogs and the young people – they are very cool.” The Ark’s coordinator Karen Howieson says they rely on grants, donations, fundraisers and sponsorship to run their programmes and so “every little bit helps.” Karen says they worked

with 440 people on their courses last year which included the highly successful Animals, People and Rehabilitative Training (APART) programme that pairs rescue dogs with troubled teenagers. The Ark runs four APART courses each year, pairing a teen with a dog trainer and rescue dog who work on a training programme to get the dog ready to be rehomed. The Ark also runs a classroom-based session that travels around schools throughout Nelson and Tasman, called Healing Species, as well as taking dogs to retirement homes for age care visits. Karen says they have five students paired with dogs on their latest APART course and are desperately seeking a foster or permanent home for one of the dogs, a six-month-old collie cross named Ezra. If anyone is interested in seeing Ezra, they can phone the Ark on 542 3866 or email info@thenelsonark. co.nz.

Exciting new career Waimea Weekly’s new advertising sales consultant Courtney Brown is excited about her change in career after joining the staff at the popular locally owned and operated community newspaper. Courtney trained as a beauty therapist when she left Waimea College in 2014, completing a Diploma in Courtney Brown Beauty Therapy at the National School of Aesthetics in Christchurch. She subsequently worked for beauty therapists in Christchurch and Richmond, before deciding it was time for a change and applying for the position as advertising sales consultant at the Weekly. Courtney says she’s “nervous but excited” about her new job and can’t wait to get out into the business community and meet the people who help make the Tasman district a great place to live, play and work. Courtney can be contacted at the Waimea Weekly by phoning 03 544 9037 or emailing courtney@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Club Waimea recognises five wonderful women Simon Bloomberg Club Waimea has its first female life members after the significant contribution of five of the club’s women was recognised at the AGM held late last month. Rosalie Richardson, Shirley Friend, Vivienne Moody, Ann Ryder and Myrtle Friend were made life members after many years of dedicated service to the club. In fact, the club’s latest life members have been working behind the scenes for so long, their contribution started even before the charter committee was formed in 1974. “We used to do all the work for the cabarets which were fundraisers to help get the club started,” Rosalie says. “They were at the Hope Hall and we’d go down and cook all the food and get everything ready. “And when the club opened we used to do all the cleaning and we’d bring flowers along for the rooms. We have a manager and staff now but back then it was all voluntary - we all helped out.” Shirley says they became involved in the club because their husbands were all foundation members. Rosalie’s husband Terry and Mrytle’s husband

Three of Club Waimea’s new female life members, from left, Vivienne Moody, Rosalie Richardson and Shirley Friend after the club’s AGM on Sunday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Stan are also life members of the club. “I joined because it was a real family-oriented club,” Shirley says. “All of our husbands were involved and we could bring our kids along too as long as they left by eight on Friday and Saturday night.” Although the women have made a big contribution to the club, they were still surprised when they were made life members. “We had a meeting recently

and it was mentioned that it was time we had some female life members but I never thought I’d be one of them,” Vivienne says. “I came along today thinking it was just going to be the AGM so it was a big surprise when they called us all up to be made life members.” Club president Lewis Della Bosca the five ladies “contributed a lot to the establishment of the club” and concedes their life membership was “long

overdue.” “All their work hasn’t been officially recognised previously so after 46 years they thoroughly deserve their life membership,” Lewis says. Bill Morgan was also made a life member at the AGM while Graham Douglas was added to the club’s honours board. Bill was a foundation member while Graham has made a big contribution to the club’s highly successful sporting programmes.

What price freedom Local residents claim warnings of fire and safety risks caused by freedom campers at Edward Baigent Reserve have gone unheeded, with Tasman District Council proposing to continue allowing freedom camping in a bylaw review coming out for consultation June 10. Wakefield Bush Restoration Society President Doug South has met with the council imploring them to restrict freedom camping to selfcontained vehicles due to overcrowding, fire risk and impact on the rare native bush and forest. “This isn’t about freedom camping, it’s about the use of a scenic reserve”, says Doug. “I acknowledge that council has been cleaning the toilets more often and have put up bollards to try and restrict where people camp, but this has actually made the problem worse”. Council’s Environment and Planning Committee chairman Tim King said that the revised proposal restricts freedom camping to the area inside the bollards but that they were constrained by the current reserve management plans. “The Reserve Management Plan currently allows camping at Edward Baigent Reserve, so the Freedom Camping Bylaw cannot be

inconsistent with this. When the Moutere Waimea plan is reviewed, then we’ll be able to discuss whether people consider camping should, or should not, be allowed there”. Wakefield Chief Fire Officer Fritz Buckendahl says that “the bollards have created more issues than they solved. A fire could escalate very quickly because they’re packed in like sardines”. West Coast-Tasman MP Damien O’Connor has visited the site and joined the call to restrict freedom camping saying that “the council should focus on the impacts, and clearly if the impacts are not what were envisaged then they need to change the rules”. “While the numbers have reduced since the peak of summer, a 40day survey by the society recorded up to 75 vehicles at any one time with people camping up to three weeks, despite the two day limit council has set”, Doug says. “Freedom camping of this magnitude was never envisaged when the plan was written in 2000”. Consultation on the draft bylaw begins on Saturday 10 June and runs until mid-August and will be available for viewing on the council website, service centres and libraries.

Runners and walkers to help fund schools

Eighty-seven schools, kindergartens and playcentres are set to be the big winners in the Nelson Half Festival of Running after a new initiative was announced by event organiser Athletics Nelson. The popular running and walking event over 2.5km, 5km, 10km and 21.1km will be based at Saxton Field on November 5. Athletics Nelson announced that entrants in this year’s event can nominate a school in the region which will receive up to half of their entry fee as a donation. The scheme is being promoted by champion distance runner and Nelson College teacher Phil Costley who says he has “never encountered such an event which gives back to the local community in so many ways”. Phil will be contacting 87 schools, kindergartens and playcentres throughout the region with an information pack over the coming weeks to help them promote the event within their schools and throughout the community. Phil says the funds raised could provide for a wide range of uses from books and sports equipment to camp subsidies or travel funds. He says entries have already started flowing in and the schools are already starting to accumulate funds. Runners can prepare for the event by following a fitness programme designed by Academy of Distance Running coach Greg Lautenslager. Competitors can get some race experience and meet other runners and walkers at 10km events from the Sprig and Fern in Brightwater on September 2 and Mapua on September 30. Interested participants might also like to join in the weekly 5km series during October which starts from the Turf Hotel in Stoke. Details about the Nelson Half Festival of Running are available on the website thenelsonhalf. co.nz

Camilla Edstrom was driving from her home in Cable Bay when she received the phone call. Her son Oliver had been in an accident. It appeared he had fallen while at the beach in Auckland’s Herne Bay. He hit his head and had not been found for 10 minutes. “I was in a daze,” Camilla says. “Then the tears came.” But before she had even arrived at Auckland Hospital she had a feeling. “I knew he would not come back. I had a sense.” Oliver Lynch, 31, was born and raised in Nelson, he went to Nayland College before studying at South Seas Film School. After working in the United States he had become a cinematographer working on National Geographic productions. He had been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his work on two such shows. The accident occ u r re d more than two years Oliver Lynch. ago, but Camilla remembers that the first thing she told doctors was that she wanted him to be a donor. Camilla says each of us have a deep desire to be beneficial. There are more than 550 people waiting for an organ or tissue transplant, according to Janice Langlands of Organ Donation New Zealand. Some of those people will die waiting, while others will continue to lead lives restricted by long-term treatment. She says people of all ages can be considered for donation. “Very few medical conditions will prevent a person from being able to donate any organs or tissues,” Janice says. But New Zealand still has a relatively low rate of organ donation. After a day, doctors told

Camilla that Oliver was brain dead. So Camilla said goodbye to her son while he was still on a ventilator to keep his heart beating and his organs preserved until they could be transplanted. “It was horrible and tragic but knowing that he has helped someone has been such a comfort,” she says. “You are not your organs. You have organs but you are not your organs.” Soon after Oliver’s death Camilla received a letter saying that two men had been given Oliver’s liver and kidneys. One wrote to her saying how he was the sole provider for his family and Oliver’s donation had allowed him to

keep doing that. “I just thought that was so fantastic,” Camilla says. “I was so grateful Oly was still of benefit.” She says it is important to have a conversation with loved ones about death and organ donation before it is too late. She had a memorial ceremony at Cable Bay soon after Oliver died. They sprinkled ashes but also kept some to lay at Wharariki Beach and up in Auckland. “Oliver is everywhere now,” Camilla says. Motueka company Bays Boating has been named dealer of the year for McLay Boats. The Milton-based boat builder has 10 dealers in New Zealand, while also exporting to Australia and Sweden. McLay Boats managing director Steve McLay says he was honoured to present to Dave Thorn and Vic Taylor from Bays Boating. “This was most deserved as having only had the McLay dealership for less than 18 months, they have out-sold all our other New Zealand dealers over this time,” Steve says. “Not only is their sales effort impressive, their customer focus is second to none.” Bays Boating sales manager Vic Taylor says the company sold about 25 McLay boats of all sizes – 4.5m to 8.5m - during the past year. He says the boats are popular because they are simple and uncomplicated, strongly built and work well. Being McLay’s top dealer is very pleasing, Vic says, as they are such good people to work with, who always take the time to talk to their customers.

Book fair off to a blazing start Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The car parks were full and books were flying off the tables, as Nelsonians braved the cold weather during the opening weekend of the Founders Annual Book Fair. The much-loved event opened its gates on Saturday morning, and has been humming ever since with book lovers, collectors, buyers and volunteers. And, once again, notorious book fair enthusiast Tim Skinner was one of the first through the gates. “I come here early every year,” says Tim. “Me and my mate Alistair have had a race for the last seven or eight years, so I was at the gate at 7am. He beat me to the gate, but I was the first through the door, flicking through all the collectors' books. “It’s a bit of a laugh, but we always walk away with some great collectors' books about Nelson, and then I’ll head to the bike and the kids sections and go find some Tintin and Asterix books for my kid," he adds. “This event is awesome, there is, like, 100,000 books here, people come all the way from Timaru to look through the books and

numbers. “There have been lots and lots of people and we have received so much good feedback so far,” she says.

“The best selling books so far have been the ones we received more donations of, particularly science fiction and art – they have been big sellers and we’re only down to

a few boxes of art books now.” The Founders Annual Book Fair runs daily from 10am to 4:30pm until Sunday June 11. Entry is $2 per day, or $5 for a nine-day pass.

A change in the air Brittany Spencer Helicopter New Zealand is pulling its remaining helicopters out of Nelson, disrupting four jobs and shifting the company’s headquarters into the CBD. Nelson has been the offshore Asia-Pacific base for HNZ since 1962 and provides chartered flights, support to oil rigs, and transport to and from scientific expeditions to Antarctica. However, after hitting the mid-point in their lease, international executive vice-president Keith Mullet says the time was right to make some changes. HNZ will move its management team of around 40 people from the former Origin Pacific Airlines terminal into a soon-to-be developed Halifax St office in the heart of Nelson. The remaining eight contracted helicopters that fly in and out of the Nelson hangar will be moved to HNZ’s New Plymouth base where the majority of the HNZ fleet are already situated. “We’ve always known the time was coming in which we’d have to make some decisions, so we evaluated the business and it just makes sense. We’ve got the facilities for all of our helicopters in New Plymouth and we do very little flying from Nelson compared with New Plymouth. “For us, it is just a relocation and doesn’t have any big impact on the company, but it does mean people will see a few less helicopters in the air.” As a result of the helicopters leaving Nelson, four maintenance engineers will be losing their roles in Nelson but Keith says the employees will be looked after. “We are giving them a variety of opportunities here, in New Plymouth, and internationally.” Nelson Airport general manager Rob Evans says they are surprised by HNZ’s decision to withdraw from the airport. “They could’ve stayed but they’ve chosen to go and that’s absolutely fine, it just means there’s an opportunity for someone else.” The former Origin Pacific Airlines terminal, offices and hangar are owned by HNZ. However Nelson Airport own the land, so HNZ are negotiating the sale of the building to Nelson Airport. “The discussions are ongoing but we are definitely interested in buying the building,” says Rob. “It won’t be a part of the redevelopment.”

For the first time in their storied National Basketball League history, the Nelson Giants will be retiring two singlets to honour the contributions of key players. The presentation with be done during a Heritage Night celebrations during the Mike Pero Nelson Giants’ final home game of the season against the Wellington Saints at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday. Just who the players are who will have their numbers retired will remain a mystery right up until the ceremony happens, but Giants general manager Janie Granger says the organisation is keen to have as many past or present Giants players, coaches, administrators and supporters as possible at the game to create a real atmosphere. Former Giants coach Matt Ruscoe, who filled the post from 1990 to 1993 when the Nelson national league team

became the Giants, will be attending, as will former guard/captain player Chris Simpson. “We are really keen to have as many people here as possible for the night and I know there are plenty of people still out there who have had an involvement in the Giants over the years and we would really like to see them all there.” There will be a chance to catch up prior to the game where the 2017 Giants face the title favourite Saints for the final time. Head coach Brendon Bailey says a heritage night with two retired singlets is long overdue. “I know, for the two guys that are getting their (singlets) retired, they’ve been long-serving people and, for me, to have played and

As the new name suggests, Richmond Preschool has adopted a more mainstream approach, using a mixture of philosophies to ensure children aged two to five learn in a positive and nurturing environment. Joining Stacey on the teaching staff is Nicola Gardiner who has been in early childhood education for the last 10 years. After a background in insurance, Nicola made the move to primary teaching before switching to early childhood. The first thing on their to do list was a refresh of the centre which has included a lick of paint and the creation of a sleeping area for the children. The centre features two large outdoor playground

areas, a garden, teacher’s area, kitchen and two large classrooms. There are other touches still to be made to the centre including further resourcing of the second classroom and more painting internally but for now, the centre is looking sharp and ready to welcome new students. “The basis of my philosophy is respect, I can’t expect children or parents to respect me if I don’t give it to them first. Parents are their children’s primary caregivers/teachers and we need to work closely with them; we need to know what they want for their children and we need to respect them totally. In order to do that we need to build good relationships and establish really good communication,” says Stacey. As

Waimea duo off to America Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Waimea College volleyball players Tane MacDonald and Matt Heyward have spent most of their sporting lives playing together so it’s no surprise they have both been selected for a New Zealand tour of the United States in July. The 17 year olds have been playing together since their days at Waimea Intermediate and say it is a thrill to be picked for the two-week United States High Performance Championships in Florida. New Zealand is sending two teams who will play against age-group state teams. Players were selected after the New Zealand Secondary School Championships and then a three-day camp at Porirua. The duo were part of the Waimea College team that finished seventh at the nationals – the best placed South Island schools. Tane plays passer-hitter while Matt is a defensive specialist.

“We both started volleyball at the same time,” Tane says. “I had a choice of rugby or volleyball and I made a South Island volleyball team in Year 10 so, that helped me make up my mind and choose volleyball.” Matt says he started playing at Year 6 but started to take it seriously when he joined the successful Waimea College volleyball programme. “Last year, I trialled for a position that was quite common and had more depth,” Matt says. The duo say they have not been overly competitive with each other but have grown up playing the sport beside each other. Both Matt and Tane hope to continue on their volleyball path after they finish their secondary school days at the end of the year. Tane says, in an ideal world, he would like to try to earn an American college scholarship for volleyball. However, Tane says they are both still eligible for another year of national age-group teams.

SportS Basketball The Nelson Giants suffered a 79-65 loss to the Super City Rangers at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre on Sunday afternoon. The Giants, out of semifinal contention with just two regular season games left, stuck with the Rangers for most of the match but unforced errors, poor passing and being outrebounded all took their toll on another frustrating day for the storied franchise. They will play the Canterbury Rams in Christchurch before their Heritage Night game against the Wellington Saints this Saturday, in Nelson.

WITH OUR HOT WINTER OFFERS

Football Nelson Suburbs have a cancelled Christchurch flight to thank for their Mainland Premier League game against Ferrymead Bays being deferred to a later date. They were scheduled to play the league leaders on Sunday before the flight issue curtailed those ambitions. Rugby league There were wins to Wanderers Wolves and Wairau Taniwha in the latest round of the Tasman Rugby League competition. Wanderers beat Victory Phoenix 36-12 and the Taniwha were too strong for the Richmond Rabbits 44-22. Rugby Tasman Makos prop Ross Geldenhuys has been granted an early release from his contract and won’t return for the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup campaign later this year. The 34-year-old South African who is currently playing for the Southern Kings in South Africa has chosen to be with his wife while she is pregnant and the Tasman Rugby Union has agreed an early release was the best decision for all invoved. Netball The Nelson Under-17 representative netball team finished fourth at the Marj Jenden Tournament in Christchurch over the weekend. Jaime Archer and Madi Springer both made the tournament team. Schoolboy school football Nelson College began their national secondary schools football qualifying campaign with a heartening 6-0 win over Marlborough Boys’ College. Thang Than Vanuk and Rick Muir each scored twice as Nelson College beat a team which had got the better of them in 2016. Waimea College secured a 3-2 win over Nayland College in a local derby match.

Nick too hot to handle in Open Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Andrew Drummond unleashes a big drive during the Taylor Timbers Waimea Golf Open at Greenacres on Saturday. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport.

Nelson golfing professional Nick Loach stormed home over the final seven holes to win the men’s competition at the Taylor Timbers Waimea Open while talented young college student Lizzie Neal shot 157 to win the women’s competition played on a perfect Greenacres golf course at the weekend. Greenacres golfer Nick Ludbrook and Marlborough’s Jonti Philipson set the early pace to lead after carding first rounds of 70 on Saturday. But Nick Loach proved unstoppable in the second round, shooting four birdies in the last seven holes to record a six under par 66 and a two shot victory over Nick Ludbrook. “I started with five pars, although I was a little scratchy and needed to get out of trouble a few times,” Nick Loach says. “But then I told myself to chill out and started hitting some nice wedges and making birdies.”

Nick’s second round was his best score at Greenacres, which he says was in excellent condition for the tournament. The 36-hole open attracted 113 players. “When the course is in such good condition, it’s a real test. The ground staff did a very good job – it was pure.” Kat Hall led the ladies after the first round carding a 79, one shot clear of Lizzie Neale. But Lizzie, aged 13, fired a 77 on Sunday to win by seven shots, recording 157 over 36 holes. Greenacres golfers won a number of competitions over the weekend with Roz Mckeown winning the Ladies Overall Nett with 145, Lance Ford won the Men’s B Grade Gross with 162, Diane Groom won the Ladies B Grade Gross with 189, Mary Eggers won the Ladies B Grade nett with 147 and Paul Salvador won the Men’s B Grade Stableford with 73. Marie Blackmore won the Ladies B Grade Stableford with 64, Chris Webb won the Men’s C grade gross with 177 and Kevin Gill won the Men’s C Grade nett with 147.

Nathan Smith ready to tee it up again Jacob Page

Nathan Smith is used to hitting the long ball and now he wants to make a comeback. The 39-year-old spontaneously ended a six year hiatus from the New Zealand long driving scene to claim fifth at the New Zealand Long Drive Championships at Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch. The 39-year-old Waimea product had eight balls to hit as far as he could in three minutes. “I’ve always been able to hit the ball a reasonable distance but one of the guys I was training with in Canada in 2008 said I should give this a go. “There is nothing better than hitting a good (ball) and just

knowing it and crushing it. “I only found out about the (New Zealand) event two months ago so I hit the gym for a month-and-a-half which wasn’t quite enough.” It was a cold, miserable day for the event which meant cold air and damp fairways curtailed the lengthy drives anticipated. “It was so cold we were asking the coffee guy for a cup of hot water each time just to get the feeling back in our fingers.” Nathan says long driving “wrecks your normal golf. “A normal swing speed for me is 115mph, whereas in long drives you have to get it up to 135-140mph and the injuries that come with it in terms of neck, back and shoulders are a worry.”

The shafts are longer, generally 48 inches instead of the normal 46 inches (with the drivers) “There’s nothing strange about snapping a shaft in practice because there’s so much force being generated.” Nathan stepped away in 2011 to focus on family but finishing fifth in New Zealand with 268m, 282m and 279m, has piqued his interest in a return. “If you have an event in summer, you start qualifying at 300m because conditions are better. Nathan says he will hit the gym hard this week in an effort to trim down, bulk up and get his swing rotation back before he targets an invitational event in Remuera in November.

Ryan making the most of life at Waimea Combined Jacob Page

Ryan Churchill could be the poster boy for what the Waimea Combined idea is all about. The talented midfielder was a top junior player at Tapawera before he transferred to Garin College. Without the combined aspect of the team it’s unlikely he would be playing UC Championship secondary school rugby. In his first year in Garin College’s Ryan Churchill is making the most of his chance to play UC Championship rugby the squad, Ryan may have the best seat in with Waimea Combined this year. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.

the house, outside the steadying influence of captain Josh McPherson and with the scintillating try scoring fullback Matthew Stevenson running off his passes, Ryan says confidence is high. Waimea’s 39-24 win over a stubborn Shirley Boys’ High School kept the side undefeated at home and ensured they gained even more momentum after their win against Nelson College a fortnight ago. Ryan says the prospect of playoff rugby is real.

“We all believe in each other and we know when we attack we can match it with any team, so it’s really exciting.” Waimea helped their opponents stay in the match with poor kickoff receptions and errors in their own territory. Waimea looked destructive on attack. A multiple try game for Matthew yet again and nice tries to Josh and Ryan were the highlights even though the forward pack struggled at scrum time.

A number of them assist in training before games and it gives the kids a chance to interact with the senior players which encourages them to come and watch the senior

Are you planning a great community event or project – but need a little help to make it happen? We may be able to help. Applications for our Community Grants are open, and there is funding available for Tasman-based projects that meet a community need, join communities together and have community support. Priority is given to projects that can show financial support from other sources as well. Applications close on 31 July 2016. Grants are available for projects that fit into the following categories: • • • •

Arts/culture/heritage/museums Festivals and events Youth and children Social services

• Environment • Emergency services • Sports and recreation facilities.

Apply online: This year we’ve shortened the time you’ll need to spend online. Visit tasman.govt.nz/link/grants to download the Community Grants from Rates Application Form. Work on the application at your own pace – and save as you go. Send the completed application back to us using a simple online form. For more information: Visit our website, www.tasman.govt.nz/link/grants or email Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones, mike.tasman-jones@tasman.govt.nz.

Information sessions for online building consent applications Nelson City and Tasman District Councils have been working together for some time to provide an easy-to-use online building consent application process called GoShift. As well as providing a single process for companies who work with multiple councils, GoShift also automatically tailors itself to the application – meaning you only have to provide the information required for the project. In addition, people using the new service can:
