New subdivision sells out in a day Simon Bloomberg The Nelson property market continues to skyrocket with 49 sections in a planned Richmond subdivision signed up by buyers in just 24 hours, with many more missing out on the deal. Interest in Hart Rise on Paton Rd, south of Richmond, was red

hot, with Summit Real Estate director Allister Nalder saying the first stage of the 140-section subdivision was “considerably over-subscribed”. Although the resource consent for subdividing the 11.5 hectare property is still pending, demand for the August 26 release was “unprecedented”. “I’ve been in real estate in Nelson

for 34 years and it even surprised me,” Allister says. “We saw something similar in the boom of 2003 and 2004, but this is even bigger.” Summit’s Richmond branch manager Gordon Webb was also astounded by the demand for the sections, which were sold “under agreement” subject to title

being issued. Gordon says the 49 sections range in size from 400 to 700 square metres and sold for an average of $250,000. “The syndicate has owned the land for six years and we have had people coming to us and asking if we had any sections available for a while now. Once the resource consent was in the

system we decided to go and see how the market would respond, so our agents sought expressions of interest - it was so fast it really surprised us.” Gordon says the demand for sections in Nelson and Tasman is being created by “a perfect storm”

Each time the Appleby School Country Fair rolls around, the sun shines and Saturday was no exception. With clear blue skies, around 2500 people flocked to the school fair to enjoy the live music, food and endless activities. Mapua father, Sandy Quinn brought his family and extended family out for a day at the fair. “It’s been a good day, lots of fun,” says Sandy. “We come out every year with the whole family, kids, parents, aunties, uncles and grandparents and it’s always a fun day out. “We got here at quarter past 11 and the school was already full, all

Supermarket plans Foodstuffs South Island has no immediate plans to start building a New World supermarket at Three Brothers Corner just south of Richmond. Resource consents were granted to Foodstuffs in March for the development of the supermarket on the former Bay Nursery site. However, Foodstuffs South Island general manager Roger Davidson says they first have to complete an analysis of population data so that they know “the best time to build the supermarket” .

A group of tree enthusiasts believe a towering eucalyptus near Richmond, that is one of the five tallest trees in the country, could become a popular destination for walkers and tourists. The giant Eucalyptus regnans, or mountain ash, is growing in Kingsland Forest behind Easby Park and was officially measured at 72.1m in 2009 by Richmond arborist Brad Cadwallader and climber Menno Kluiters. At the time, it was the second-tallest measured tree in New Zealand behind an 80m mountain ash in the Orokonui Eco-sanctuary near Dunedin and Richmond’s Sally and Brent Curtis say that qualifies the tree as a potential tourist attraction. “This tree needs to be a destination - it’s very impressive,” Brent says. “It’s amazing that we have the second tallest tree in New Zealand and not too many people even know about it.” Although there is a track from Easby Park that leads to the tree, which is known as the Barrington Gum, Brent says the track needs upgrading to make it safe for all levels of

Beautiful about the tree and they are keen to help out. Sally has also contacted Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne about their proposal and she says he is very supportive of the idea. Brad, who is manager of the New Zealand Tree Register, also thinks the tree could become a destination for walkers and tourists. He says people will be astounded by the size of the 160-year-old tree which has a diameter of 2.35m and towers above the surrounding pine trees. “It was the second tallest tree in New Zealand when we measured it,” Brad says. “There are now a few more trees in the 70 m class but it’s safe to say it is in the top five. “I have laser-measured it since 2009 and it had grown a bit but it hasn’t quite reached 72m yet. The big gums in the Waimea College bus bay are only about 26m high so that puts it in perspective.” Brad says the tree was planted as part of a “classic” forestry block of pine trees, macrocarpa and eucalypts as part of Barrington Farm back in 1860 or 1870. It escaped disaster in the December 2011 floods when a torrent of mud and debris nar-

Message in bottle returned to s Andrew Board

A message in a bottle found in the Chatham Islands last week has helped solve the mystery of another letter in a bottle found on Nelson’s Boulder Bank more than a decade ago. Cheryl Baird, of Richmond, and Sharon Gomulski, of Brightwater, found a message inside a plastic Coke bottle on the Boulder Bank while out for a walk on March 24, 2000. When they got home they read the note from a ten year old girl, who wrote that she

had “long auburn hair with freckles on my face and my arms”. The message was thrown from the Pakawau Beach in Golden Bay 13 months earlier and the young girl finished her message by scribbling: “If you try to find me go to Pakawau and find a house that’s pink.” Cheryl and Sharon did, several times, but had no luck finding the pink house and over the years forgot about the message – until last week when an article which featured in several news outlets told the story of a Blenheim

It was found washed up in the Chatham Islands last month. “When we saw the story on the Picton lady I said to Sharon, ‘do we still have our message in a bottle?” says Cheryl. They did, and a quick Facebook search revealed the writer of the message immediately. “I couldn’t believe how easy it was after all these years. Of course, there was no Facebook

But I put in her name and there she was, Maria Gibney.” Now 27, Maria, who lives in Tahunanui, vaguely remembers writing the note and says she was stunned when Cheryl sent her a private message via Facebook. “I was like ‘whaaaaat?’ This is crazy.” She laughed at the note her ten-year-old self wrote, “I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea to describe myself,

obviously that was important to me.” The three quickly arranged to meet up and Maria says it was emotional. “My grandparents had a house over there so I spent a lot of my summers over there. This is really special to me, I had a great childhood and it brought up a lot of memories. “When my grandfather passed away, my grandmother moved to Nelson. I think it was

probably one of the last times that we were there.” Cheryl and Sharon say they were just happy to have solved the mystery of the message. “We’ve been walking together once a week for 20 years and I’m always fossicking. Sharon always tells me off and I remember the day we found the bottle I was picking up some rope and a bit of net and Sharon told me off. It was when I was there getting the rope that I saw the bottle and that it had a letter inside it. It would have been hard to see because it was the same colour as the rocks.” Cheryl told Sharon she could see a note in it and they tried to read it then and there, but were distracted by some young men in an inflatable raft getting into trouble. “We helped them get ashore and then took one of them to Richmond, so forgot about the bottle for a bit. After we read it we looked for this little pink house in Pakawau, but we could never find it.” Sharon says they both went over a couple of times to look for the house but eventually packed the message away and, over time, forgot about it. “It’s always been in the back of our minds, we thought ‘we have to find this girl’,” says Cheryl. “It’s amazing, really, that Maria is still in Nelson and still has the same surname. It’s such a great ending to the story.” Maria says she’s going to frame the note, alongside a photo of her grandparents’ bach.

Kitty litter covers carpark: Members of the public were left confused after walking past the 623 corner of Buxton Square during Friday’s downpour. The corner was covered with kitty litter which, in the sudden rainfall, spread across the carpark and flooded a drain, leaving onlookers complaining about the “massive mess”. A council spokesperson has since confirmed that the kitty litter was spread across the carpark corner by Downers, following an oil spill from a hydraulic vehicle pump earlier that morning. The kitty litter has since been swept up and the area has been tidied.

Video of the week: Leading boat launched in Nelson A ceremony steeped in tradition was held in Nelson on Thursday to celebrate the launch of Santy Maria, a boat that will change the face of commercial fishing in New Zealand. Visit www.nelsonlive.co.nz about having “cloudy” and “silty” water prior to the repair. The leak was traced to a plumbing fitting feeding an isolator outside 5 Douglas Rd. A council spokesperson says ferrule fittings can and do fail for any number of reasons, including corrosion or pipe movement, and the only solution is a replacement, but residents shouldn’t be concerned. A contractor was on site yesterday flushing the pipes to eliminate the discoloured water.

.CO.NZ Springs Junction cafe fails to pay worker: Alpine Motor Inn & Café has been ordered to pay $19,296 in penalties and arrears for failing to pay a migrant worker minimum wage or holiday pay. The employee started working and living on site at the cafe on November 17, 2014 and did not receive their first pay of $1289.39 until March 1, 2015. By the time the employee resigned on March 22, 2015, they had only been paid a total of $2541.03, with the 552 hours they had worked in the first three months going unrecognised by their employer. The Employment Relations Authority (ERA) ordered the cafe to pay the employee $6836.02, as well as $5000 for taking advantage of a vulnerable migrant worker and $7500 for failing to maintain records, or pay minimum wage. Director Jerry Hohneck argued that the worker was a volunteer, but the ERA says the evidence provided did not stack up. The winning ticket was sold at the Richmond Mall Pak ‘n Save. Powerball was not struck and will be rolled over to Wednesday night.

New petrol station for Richmond A resource consent has been granted to Caltex Bishopdale owner Kyle Lightfoot to build a petrol station on the corner of Champion Rd and Salisbury Rd, adjacent to the Richmond Aquatic Centre. Kyle lodged the consent in May and it was approved by the Tasman District Council in July. Nelson company Coman Holdings Limited owns the 5260 square metre site at 149 Salisbury Rd after purchasing it from the council last year. Kyle says the petrol station will be constructed as soon as possible, although can't put a timeline on the project because there were too many variables to still consider. "We still have to go through the building consent process and then it will be Christmas, so I can't say when we will start," Kyle says. "But we want to build it as soon as we possibly can." Although the land is zoned for tourism and cannot be used for residential development, council approved the consent because the application was for the same area of land that had a consent granted for commercial development in 2014. It was considered that a petrol station would not result in any additional adverse effects on the tourist services zone. The land at 149 Salisbury Rd was formerly owned by the council which sold it to Coman Holdings.

A resource consent has been approved to build a petrol station on this site on the corner of Champion Rd and Salisbury Rd.

Tasman QV figures rise in August Tasman district home values have increased by 9.2 per cent over the past year and 2.9 per cent over the past three months, the latest QV figures for August show. The average value for homes in the Tasman district is now $463,596. Nelson home values have also increased by 13.9 percent year on year and 4.2 per cent over the past three months - the average value in the city is now $473,624. QV homevalue Nelson registered valuer Craig Russell says, “We are seeing a continuation of a strong winter market with record prices being achieved in some instances. “Satellite townships such as Wakefield and Brightwater have experienced strong value growth in recent months. Lifestyle properties which are well located close to amenities and with views have been highly sought after. “As demand is greater than supply sellers consider it prudent to hold onto their own property until they have secured their new purchase meaning that they do not get caught without having a home and it negates the fear of rising house prices between selling and buying.” Craig says low interest rates, lack of supply and strong investor interest continues to drive the market. However, he says there has been a spike in first home buyers request for valuations in recent weeks which is potentially a sign of investor 40 per cent deposit restrictions taking effect. “There is a lack available residential sections on the market, with new stages being snapped up soon after coming onto the market by buyers capitalising on the lower deposit required for new builds.”

MERCHANT NAVY DAY: Lone piper Bryce Gilchrist leads the parade at Saturday’s Merchant Navy Day. Families and friends gathered in front of the war memorial as seafarers paraded along Haven Rd and into the park, passing through a guard of honour formed by the TS Talisman Sea Cadets. Dave Lawes from the Nelson Merchant Navy Association served on the sea for “40 odd years” and says the day was a fitting tribute. To watch a video of the parade, go to www.nelsonlive. co.nz. Modern service with traditional dignity

Opinion

Your Voice Gondola support appreciated: It was great to read the letter in last week’s paper by Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey on the gondola. Personally, I love the idea of splashing the word ‘NELSON’ across the gondola’s cabins for the world to see. It would certainly be a cost-effective way of getting the word out about the world-class adventure and lifestyle opportunities on offer in our special part of the world. Thanks to Nelson City Council’s support, the Nelson Cycle Lift Society will soon be commissioning a pre-commercial business plan so that we can decide to offer the gondola to the investor market. We will also be hiring a manager to take the project to the next level, which will include applying for additional funding from central government. We are also about to launch a Facebook page to promote the project and keep the community up-to-date on its progress. As Matt pointed out, the gondola could be a game-changer for Nelson and all of us on the society are grateful for the support we’re receiving from Council and the wider community. Exciting times ahead! Jo Rainey, Nelson Cycle Lift Society.

A cinema, aquarium or something to entertain people would be good, there’s enough gas stations and supermarkets, even a hardware store would be good. A train or tram station that connects all the main centres up would be cool and get cars off the roads to make it flow better. Or a monorail circuit that does a loop and has multiple trains on it, so every 10 minutes over peak hours there’s a ride to keep people moving. Trent Fairbairn. This is awesome!!! Unused land will get a user as well as creating jobs and inputting back into the local economy. Not to mention a 2nd choice for motorists using AA card for

Does this mean they are going to open up Hill St through to the ridgeway? Jeff Holden. Richmond’s bad air day: Bad humans. I for one would like to see coal banned from domestic fire places. Julian Trigg. Richmond Queen St top end stinks of smells like burning wires. Keri Williams. Council hands out $218,000 in grants The Abel Tasman Cycle Challenge, Murchison Historical and Museum Society and Tapawera and Valley Historical Society are some of the bigger benefactors of this year’s Tasman District Council community grants. The council has allocated $218,000 to 137 community projects and services through this year’s community grants. Council received a record 167 applications this year, requesting a combined $613,269. Community grants subcommittee chairperson Martine Bouillir says there is a lot of wonderful work done by community groups in the district, and the grants are intended to provide a helping hand. “We target the funding to organisations working in Tasman who contribute to community benefit and well-being. This year’s grants will help community groups deliver a huge range of projects and services that make our district a better place to live.” The largest grant this year went to the Abel Tasman Cycle

Challenge, which will receive $10,000. Martine says council is particularly keen to help such new events become established in order to provide ongoing benefits.

Martine Bouillir “The Abel Tasman Cycle Challenge plays to the strengths of the region, in that it encourages people to get active while celebrating the environment. In the past, we supported the Spring Challenge Women’s Adventure Race in a similar way, and it is now in its 10th year.”

The Murchison Historical and Museum Society received $4000 to paint the exterior of the museum while the Tapawera and Valley Historical Society received $4000 towards using an army hut to display photos and information on the Tapawera Military Camps. The Fifeshire Foundation recieved $7500 to be reallocated to Tasman residents in-need while the Nelson Tasman Business Trust received $7500 for a small business advisory service in Tasman. Martine says the grants will also help fund a wide range of initiatives including adult literacy and numeracy tuition, youth worker training, marae and cultural services, community artworks, historical publications and fairs, festivals and events. The other big grants included $5000 to the Nelson Jazz Club towards Jazzfest in Washbourn Gardens, $4500 to Keep Richmond Beautiful for ongoing beautification projects and $4000 to the Rough Island Equestrian Park towards a concrete pad.

Nelson's young drivers among the country's best Pass rates are climbing and crashes are declining, as young Nelson drivers near the top in road rule knowledge The NZ Transport Agency says Nelson received New Zealand's second-highest pass rate for learner driver licence theory tests. The regional pass rate for the Class 1 theory test has

reached 73 per cent this year, second only to Manawatu on 75 per cent and a big increase from just 56 per cent in 2010. Regional manager Kate Styles says the region's improvement shows young drivers are making a real effort to know the road code. "It's encouraging that our new generation of

young drivers are increasingly showing that they're willing and ready to get a good understanding of the rules to help them share our roads safely." The number of fatal and serious injury crashes involving teenage drivers in Nelson has dropped from 10 in 2009 to just two last year.

4 MAYOR TASMAN

Focus - Fresh Approach - Community Involvement

Important notIce Did you know that Mayoral candidate, Kit Maling has major conflicts of interest regarding the dam? He is the Chairman of Waimea East Irrigators – the group which will benefit most from the dam. They are the largest irrigator and the only group which draws water directly from the river. Every year this is a major factor in the perceived water shortage for the rest of Richmond. Water from the proposed dam will not be piped for domestic use. 90% will flow directly out to sea. Mr Maling is also a Director of Waimea Community Dam. It is not a dam for the community – it is a dam for the irrigators. We need to implement the plan for the Clover Road reservoir and weirs as well as introduce a Council backed scheme for household rainwater collection tanks. The reservoir and weir system will be “user pays”. The irrigators – not the rest of the ratepayers - will pay for what they use. RATES WILL RISE SIGNIFICANTLY IF THIS DAM IS BUILT.

Time for a Change

We have considerable growth in our district at the moment, but we have to make sure that we are protecting our environment for future generations that are to follow in our footsteps. To that end, improving water quality in our urban creeks and streams is a priority in the next term of council.

The trusted experts in property management www.championproperty.co.nz

Since 2011, Champion Property Management has been working hard to take the stress out of owning investment properties. Now, due to the growth of the business and to better service their Tasman clients, Champion Property Management is opening a second office on Richmond’s Queen St. As rental owners themselves, with properties both local and outside the

Nelson region, Champion Property Management owners Trish and Godfrey Watson have used the services of property managers for many years. They have experienced the good, the bad, and the downright ugly of residential property management, which was the driving factor behind their decision to establish their own property management business. “We set up the company because we were un-

We started the business from scratch and have grown it to what it is today,” says Godfrey. “We believe our service is what sets us apart from other property management businesses. Service is an absolute focus for us, we operate the ‘one per cent makes a difference’ philosophy

within the business and we make a point of not overloading our property managers with too many properties to manage, in order for them to deliver that high quality service to our clients every time.” Champion Property Management doesn’t sell real estate or mortgages, residential property management is their priority and so are their customers, which means the person you speak to about tenanting a property is the same person

you speak to about maintenance, rent review and account enquiries. In other words, the person you speak to knows everything about your property. Although the company has always catered to investment property owners in the Tasman region, their new Richmond office will enhance this service, bringing a stronger focus to property owners in the area including Motueka, Brightwater, Mapua and Hope. What is classical equestrian art? Traditionally, the art form came from cavalry movements and the training of horse and rider for the battlefield. While it has evolved into the modern dressage seen today, there are still four riding schools around the world that are dedicated to maintaining the traditional schooling of horse and rider. What classes do you offer? Whether you’re a first timer that has an interest in classical dressage or you’re an experienced rider looking for a new challenge, Eleena Kennedy welcomes you to book a lesson for just $40 per

hour. Lessons are perfect for all ages and all riding levels. Eleena also runs a number of sessions focusing on horsemanship, physio biomechanics and lunge work with her classically trained horses. What experience do you have in classical dressage? Eleena has been running her business with horses for over 20 years, although her research and training into the style goes back much further. She has spent her life studying the traditional writings of classical dressage from masters such as Xenophon of Athens who lived between 430BC - 354BC in Greece.

Winter Warrior lends helping hand Jessie Johnston With a successful Wairua Winter Warrior done and dusted, the only thing left to do was hand over the proceeds to some deserving community groups. Greg and Donna Witika of Wairua Body Coaching Systems organised the first Wairua Winter Warrior which took place on August 20. They also organise the Wairua Warrior which began in April 2015. The recipients of the winter obstacle course event were Life Education Trust and Fuzion, a local dance crew who are off to the Hip Hop Unite World Championships later on this year. “We believe that Life Educa-

tion does a great job, they’ve been our charity since we started and all the money raised stays local which is the most important thing,” says Greg. With several of the dance crew’s mothers being members of the gym, Fuzion was also an obvious choice when it came to financial support. “It’s nice to give back to people that we know and it’s a great cause,” says Greg. “They’ve made it to the world champs and it’s a big ask to raise the money to get over there. Every little bit helps so I’m glad we can chip in.” While Fuzion received around $368, Life Education Trust was donated $2000. “It’s a real honour to be involved with these guys, their

focus, their ability to motivate people and rising up for a challenge is really akin to what we want to achieve with young kids through Life Ed,” says Life Education Trust chairperson Michelle Fitzgerald. “There’s so much the money could go towards. “Our operating costs are somewhere just over $100,000 dollars a year and we raise that all from the community. We don’t have anything earmarked for this but something will come up.” Anyone wishing to help Fuzion reach the Hip Hop Unite World Champs can donate through their Give a Little page at givealittle.co.nz/cause/help fuziongettoworlds

Wayne Mackey for Tasman District Council With extensive management and governance experience behind him, Wayne Mackey is seeking your vote in the upcoming Richmond Ward Elections. For the past 18 years Wayne has been the chief executive of Network Tasman Limited, a position that he believes has left him with the exact skills needed to be an effective member of council. He will be retiring from Network Tasman on September 30 which, under his stewardship, has demonstrated a track record of financial prudence, cost containment and sound management. Thanks to Wayne’s years in senior management and governance, he will also bring common sense independent thinking to the challenges facing council, which include the growth of the region, cost and debt control and the need for water augmentation. “I would like to see an increased focus on cost and debt control as well as a rigorous review of infrastructure business cases and full consideration of alternatives to minimise or defer investments,” says Wayne. While Wayne supports the need for water augmentation and/or storage, he believes this should not be at the expense of a rate payer subsidy for the benefit of

extractors. “The business case needs to be revised and all options revisited,” says Wayne. “Extractors and ratepayers need to understand the very high construction and financial risk of the Waimea Community Dam. While the value of water at the point of extraction is currently ‘free’, there is little or no drivers for water ‘efficiency’ and appropriate land use.” Wayne also gives his support to greater cooperation between local bodies and options for shared services, where this makes sense, to lower cost and increase the level and quality of services to Tasman ratepayers. If your concerns for the future of the Tasman region are in line with those of Wayne Mackey, make sure you support him these elections so he can represent you. Outside of work life, Wayne has lived in Richmond for 38 years and he and his wife Karen have adult two children. He has in the past also been involved with a number of sports including squash, cricket, junior soccer and golf. If you have any questions for Wayne that you’d like answered about his suitability to be a councilor, email him at mackey. wayne@gmail.com or by twitter @ tdcelections. Advt.

Students learn the art of public speaking Jessie Johnston Powertalk International Waimea has been passing on some valuable skills to Waimea College’s up-andcoming leaders. The college approached the group 17 years ago asking if they could provide some training to their year 12 students who would be applying for leadership roles in year 13. Since then, Powertalk International Waimea has hosted a four week long seminar each year, where students are introduced to the Powertalk short course programme on effective speaking.

This year 10 students from Waimea College took part in the course that includes one session each week. They learn how to control nervousness when having to speak publicly, how to have platform presence, effective voice control, effective listening skills and are also taught articulation, impromptu speaking skills and how to prepare a formal speech. “It’s important to us because we’re all about coaching and effective speaking and we like to see the young ones come through and have those skills for life,” says Powertalk’s seminar co-ordinator, Linda Bergman. “Especially

now in this modern age when everybody texts and emails and twitters, they don’t speak one to one so we like to do as much as we can in the community.” Last Tuesday marked the end of the course and saw each student give a three to five minute speech, encompassing all the tools they had learnt including the four Ps of public speaking, pitch, pace, pause and projection. They were also given a personal evaluation on things to improve on in the future and a certificate of participation, with Talia Kacmis being named Speaker of the Night.

Just a thought... Death is not a subject we like to think about or talk about, yet it is a fact of life. It is something we are exposed to daily on our television screens and sooner or later we will all be faced with the death of a close friend or family member, as I have been this past week with the sudden death of my eldest brother. It is never easy to farewell a friend or a relative, but the loss is certainly made slightly easier when they have lived full and meaningful lives. Words of wisdom from Solomon who said ‘it is better to go to the house of mourning than to a house of feasting,’ meaning that attending a funeral can be

a powerful reminder to stop and pause and reflect on the meaning of life and to think about making wise choices for the rest of our journey. C S Lewis pointed out that, if you study history, you will find that those who have made the greatest difference in this life are those who have thought most highly of the next. Whatever we believe about death and what lies beyond, it will vitally affect the meaning we give to this life and how we choose to live it. So my thought this week has been about the importance of always ‘beginning with the end in mind,’ which is one of seven key habits or phrases that Ste-

ven Covey writes about in his best-selling book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.’ Since we each only get one shot at life, it is important that we make wise choices guaranteeing that we finish our journey well and without regrets. Jesus summed it up very well when he said “I came that you might have and enjoy life and have it in abundance” or another translation says “so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” Moses said: “Teach us to realise the brevity of life, (number our days) so that we may grow in wisdom.” Psalm 90: 12

New boat launched A ceremony was held in Nelson last week to celebrate the launch of a boat that will change the face of commercial fishing in New Zealand. The Santy Maria has been built for Ngati Awa fisherman Roger Rawlinson and is named after his mother, who started the business with his father Bill more

than 25 years ago. The vessel is the first in Moana New Zealand’s $25-30million fleet renewal project. It has been designed by Australian company OceanTech,

with the technical expertise and fishing experience of Westfleet’s Craig Boote, and constructed to the highest specifications by Aimex Service Group in Nelson.

Tertiary Students - Get essential advice and support to land the job you want Student Job Search (SJS) is working alongside NMIT and their student association, SANITI, to assist Nelson tertiary students with the necessary skills they need for their job hunt. The two services are combining forces to hold a three day employment workshop for tertiary students, which will be held at the student centre at NMIT from the 13th – 15th September 2016. SJS representatives and the SANITI Employment Coordinator will be offering advice on CV and cover letter writing, interviews and application skills, as well as informing students about what jobs are currently available in the Nelson region. Nicola Smith from Student Job Search explains, “Our intention is to not only be on campus with SANITI to provide support to students at NMIT to build these essential skills but also to make local employers aware of the quality of students available, particularly with the summer period fast approaching”. For tertiary students, now is the perfect time to start thinking about what needs to be done in preparation for job hunting. The best summer jobs get snapped up quickly, which is why we want to help to ensure students are ready to hit the ground running with their job search, applications and interviews to land the perfect job. Whether it’s for some extra cash, or to gain some work experience, it’s always best to be

equipped with the rights skills and be prepared. SJS hosts a range of one-off, casual, part time and full time jobs, which are dedicated to meeting the needs of all students. With a huge range of jobs from lawn-mowing and childcare, to hospitality, retail and a number of office-based roles, SJS are sure to have something suitable for everyone. For employers, whether you’re a household or a professional organisation, SJS provides the opportunity to advertise your jobs for free. SJS has over 34 years experience of matching students with employers and has access to over 200,000 tertiary students looking for work. To ensure employers get the right person for the job, SJS interview all successful applicants by phone to provide a shortlist of candidates for the employer to then choose from. At Student Job Search they hear first-hand from employers that hiring a student has changed their work place for the better. A student’s energy, positivity, humour and overall eagerness to be in their first job can transform the work environment overnight. For further information on Student Job Search or if you’re interested in attending the workshop at NMIT, please visit the website at www.sjs.co.nz or call us on 0800 757 562. Business Update. Adv.

The team then signed autographs and took selfies before going to Nelson Airport for some more promotional duties. Each of the six players were presented with a Waimea Old Boys scarf and Liam was challenged to wear it in the Marist clubrooms next season.

Waimea’s golden hockey girls win Simon Bloomberg Waimea College’s hockey programme continues to produce top players and results, with the girls team defeating Epsom Girls’ Grammar School 3-2 in the final of the Audrey Timlin Memorial trophy in Ashburton on Friday. Waimea College has already produced two women’s Black Stick Olympians, Anita McLaren and Kelsey Smith, this year and last week it was the turn of the next generation of the college’s hockey girls to shine. And that happened when Jaime Rushbrooke scored the winning goal in the golden-goal extra-time to win the final in Ashburton. Incredibly it was the second golden-

goal win for Waimea at the tournament. Waimea had earlier scored a goldengoal in extra-time to beat Wanganui Collegiate in a tense semi-final. Waimea led 2-0 at half time against Epsom after goals to Jess Kelly, through a penalty corner, and Julia Edwards, who scored from a penalty stroke. However, Epsom fought back, scoring twice, to send the game into extratime before Jaime scored the goldengoal winner following a fast break and pass by Jess. Waimea College, which finished the tournament unbeaten, had won the Tasman secondary schools tournament at Saxton Turf in August.

Waimea girls qualify for basketball nationals Waimea College may have cruised to victory at the South Island secondary school girls basketball championships in Christchurch last week but coach Ed Book believes the team will need to take “a big step up” for their next assignment. Waimea was unbeaten at the South Island championships held at Cowels Stadium in Christchurch, winning the final against Rangi Ruru Girls School 63-47. It was only the second time at the tournament that Waimea was tested after a relatively close 82-67

win over Middleton Grange School in the tournament opener. Although Ed says the team played well to secure its second South Island title in three years after winning in 2104, he is under no illusions that the nationals in Palmerston North from September 26 to October 1 will be a considerably tougher proposition. “It’s going to be a big step up,” Ed says. “The girls played very well in Christchurch which is pleasing but this will be completely different.” However, Ed is confident the girls
