Ralph saves a man’s life Oh, he also won 17 medals at the SI Masters Games Simon Bloomberg Wai-iti athlete Ralph Bradley had a memorable NZCT South Island Masters Games winning 17 medals from 19 events, but he says his best result was a distant last in the 5km cross-country recorded after he stopped to help save the life of another competitor. Ralph was racing into medal contention in the cross-country around Saxton Field when a friend, Richmond runner Phil Greep suffered a cardiac event and fell to the ground. Ralph and another runner, Tom Young, administered CPR for “seven or eight minutes” until the St John Ambulance arrived and raced Phil to hospital. Phil has made a miraculous recovery after surgery and was back at home on Tuesday saying he owed Ralph and Tom “a bloody big thankyou.” Although Phil doesn’t even remember lining up at the start of the race, his wife Beth, who witnessed the incident, told him about Ralph and Tom’s lifesaving exploits. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,” Phil says. “I’m very, very lucky.” Ralph, who is trained in first aid and was chaplain for the Masters Games, was relieved at Phil’s rapid recovery saying “it’s delightful he’s still with us.” The two veteran runners know each other from Waimea Harriers and Ralph says they were “chatting to each other” before the start of Tuesday’s cross-country. “I came around the corner and Tom was kneeling over him. We initially thought he had tripped and winded himself but we quickly assessed him and realised it was a cardiac event and started CPR.

He turned purple and then went grey - it must have been terrible for his wife Beth watching it all.” Ralph says Tom did a great job taking turns at CPR while Waimea College student Bridie Edwards responded quickly by phon-

missing out on an 18th medal, saying “I’d swap all 17 medals for the chance to help someone out”, Tom’s wife Fiona intends to set the record straight. She has had a Masters Games gold medal from Sport Tasman engraved and plans to present it to Ralph to commemorate his life-saving exploits.
