Ralph saves a man’s life Oh, he also won 17 medals at the SI Masters Games Simon Bloomberg Wai-iti athlete Ralph Bradley had a memorable NZCT South Island Masters Games winning 17 medals from 19 events, but he says his best result was a distant last in the 5km cross-country recorded after he stopped to help save the life of another competitor. Ralph was racing into medal contention in the cross-country around Saxton Field when a friend, Richmond runner Phil Greep suffered a cardiac event and fell to the ground. Ralph and another runner, Tom Young, administered CPR for “seven or eight minutes” until the St John Ambulance arrived and raced Phil to hospital. Phil has made a miraculous recovery after surgery and was back at home on Tuesday saying he owed Ralph and Tom “a bloody big thankyou.” Although Phil doesn’t even remember lining up at the start of the race, his wife Beth, who witnessed the incident, told him about Ralph and Tom’s lifesaving exploits. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,” Phil says. “I’m very, very lucky.” Ralph, who is trained in first aid and was chaplain for the Masters Games, was relieved at Phil’s rapid recovery saying “it’s delightful he’s still with us.” The two veteran runners know each other from Waimea Harriers and Ralph says they were “chatting to each other” before the start of Tuesday’s cross-country. “I came around the corner and Tom was kneeling over him. We initially thought he had tripped and winded himself but we quickly assessed him and realised it was a cardiac event and started CPR.

“People shouldn’t dump rubbish in the river, but I also understand that for some people the price of taking stuff to the tip is prohibitive.”

“I have no idea, that’s harsh enough I think, [maybe] concessions for people who can’t afford [dump prices], it’s not cheap. Punishment isn’t necessarily the right way to go.”

“It’s a bit of a tough one really, it is much more expensive to dump your rubbish now and I don’t know if harsher fines are going to do it, but definitely surveillance, would do it.”

“I know the rubbish dump prices have gone up quite a bit but definitely doesn’t warrant dumping it in the river. I think it’s a good fine.”

Menzshed building towards Christmas

Tree planting for principal Maureen Ryan and the family of the late Chris Ryan are inviting past pupils and families to attend a tree planting ceremony. It will be in the grounds of Henley School this Saturday at 1pm to commemorate the school’s “much loved” past principal. Chris passed away after a short illness on February 13 this year. He retired after 18 years as principal of Henley School in 2008.

Richmond Mall’s Christmas display will have a very community feel about it this year, with most of it being donated by the Waimea Menzshed. Members of the shed, at Richmond Park, have been working on wooden reindeer and a sleigh for Santa’s display at the Mall this December. Menzshed member Ian Clark says several members have helped with the construction of the reindeer and he’s thrilled they could be a part of it. “We do a lot of community work and it’s nice to be able to put something back into the community and it gives the guys here a chance to use their skills as well. It also builds up our own pride in giving something back. Being able to say ‘granddad built that’.”

Dumped rubbish a $13k problem Simon Bloomberg

Peter says it’s disappointing that people continued to pollute the environment especially when the cost of taking rubbish to the council’s refuse transfer stations was minimal. The council’s transfer station fees have been $55 per cubic metre for mixed waste and $18.80 per cubic metre for green waste since 2012 while there was no charge for dumping a car body. “You will always get the ratbags who think it is a cheap way of disposing their rubbish but it actually doesn’t cost much to take rubbish to the transfer stations,” Peter says. “It’s disappointing because it’s bad for the environment and it’s unsightly.” The average cost of cleaning up a load of illegally dumped rubbish was $355 while it cost around $200 to remove abandoned vehicles. Peter says council’s options for discouraging illegal dumping were limited. It could fine illegal rubbish dumpers $400 although it took “a lot of effort to gather the level of evidence required to prosecute them”. Anyone who sees someone illegally dumping rubbish or finds rubbish dumped illegally can contact the council.

Richmond’s Murray Thorn was looking forward to taking a week off to go whitebaiting but his enthusiasm soon turned to anger when he arrived at his favourite spot on the Waimea River on Monday to find a load of rubbish dumped on the riverbank. The pile of car parts, household rubbish and a pram didn’t deter Murray from setting up his whitebait stand - nothing was going to deny him a day on the river - but it did take the gloss off the first day of his weeklong holiday. Murray’s idyllic site on the banks of the Waimea River had been trashed and he wasn’t happy. “I don’t understand why these people do this,” Murray says. “What does it cost to take a load of rubbish like this to the tip - a couple of dollars? “What makes it worse is that it gets dumped here and then we get a flood and it ends up at Rabbit Island. It’s so disappointing.” Tasman District Council engineering manager Peter Thom-

The Waimea, Wai-iti and Wairoa riverbeds were some of the worst areas for illegal dumping although it was a district-wide problem.

Blackcaps in Nelson: Some of the country’s top cricketers were in Nelson last Friday as part of a national road show. Star batsman Ross Taylor and superquick bowler Adam Milne were at the Nelson College for Girls gym, alongside White Ferns Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu. The road show is making its way through the country ahead of a busy summer of cricket for the national sides, including two ODIs for the Blackcaps at Saxton Field. The road show included plenty of activities to keep the kids busy and the opportunity to have posters, bats and caps signed by the cricketers.

Truck fire: A truck carrying 63 gas cylinders was destroyed by fire on Quarantine Rd early Monday morning. The truck is thought to be a Summerland truck which had just arrived in Nelson from Christchurch carrying cylinders of oxygen, nitrous oxide and acetylene. Nelson Fire Service station officer Craig Davies says the truck driver found his rear trailer on fire, pulled over and called the fire service. “We couldn’t get anywhere near it for several hours, there was a 200 metre radius around the truck which was evacuated as these cylinders have a bad habit of exploding.” Gym-goers were evacuated from City Fitness at around 6.40am with some reporting that they heard a “boom, boom” before people came in saying there was a fire.

Nelsonians live longer A new report has found that Nelsonians have a higher life expectancy, are more active and less likely to smoke than the average Kiwi. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has released a profile of the region’s health and well-being ahead of a series of community engagement meetings which start today. The figures show people in the region have a life expectancy of 82.2 years - a year longer than the average New Zealander. The region’s population is also older than

the national average with eight per cent being over 75 years, compared with six per cent across the country. It also shows that 67.1 per cent of Nelson Marlborough residents are physically active compared to the national 52.4 per cent, and that 12.8 per cent of us are daily smokers compared to 13.7 per cent of Kiwis. But the report discovered that youth aged 15 to 24 years in the region are at higher risk of injury and emergency department attendance than their national

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz counterparts, and the leading cause of preventable death in the region is coronary disease. There will be five community engagement meetings across the region throughout October, and members of the public are invited to attend. Andrew Lesperance, general manager for strategy, funding and alliance support,

says the meetings will provide a unique opportunity to hear directly from the district health board about the current health of our population and the overall intended direction of current and future service provision to the community. Board chair Jenny Black and CEO Chris Fleming will present on the findings and the strategic planning for the region’s services. Locals aim to get Kiwis singing our anthem

Police warn over tool thefts

Nelson Bays Police are investigating three thefts that occurred overnight on September 30 targeting tools. Tools were stolen from a carport in Motueka. A tool box and fuel cans were stolen from a secure yard in Richmond and a lawnmower was stolen from a shed in Redwood Valley. Senior Sergeant John Price says anyone with information about who might be responsible should contact Nelson Police. He says that while police did not have evidence to show the incidents were linked, the offending followed a similar pattern and all occurred on the same night. “If anyone has information about this we’d be very keen to have a chat. Also, if anyone has been offered goods they think might be stolen they should give us a call.”

Jessie Johnston Reporter

Paula Nicholas and Cherrill Cooper believe it’s time to celebrate this wonderful nation and they’re doing it through song. Their aim, in a nutshell, is to see Kiwis come together at gathering points throughout New Zealand at 12 noon on Sunday, October 25, and sing the country’s national anthem. The event was created by the two Richmond ladies who both wished to unite the country through the words of our national anthem, and for the last few weeks preparations have been all go. “About 14 months ago I felt that people weren’t very patriotic, and when you see other countries they are very patriotic when they sing their national anthem, so I decided to download our national anthem,” says Cherrill. “I felt that we needed to get

I back-tobacked it by putting English on one side and Maori on the other, then I sat there and I folded it and it came to the size of a credit card, [it’s printed on paper that doesn’t rip] and it fits in your wallet.” After the idea for using them on Anzac Day failed to eventuate, Paula and Cherrill joined forces after being introduced to each other by Paula’s mother – Cherrill’s friend. Paula came up with the date

and they combined their ideas into NZ Anthem – One Voice. Already their Facebook page has reached 60,000 people and not just within New Zealand. Many Kiwis currently living overseas have shown their love for the idea, as well as the mayor’s of Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough, and both local MPs. Set to be held on Labour Day, the event requires people to register a gathering point on the Facebook page so people

can then see places where they can congregate to sing the national anthem. While a complete list of the gathering points can be found on the page at NZ Anthem One Voice, some of the local areas include Richmond Mall, Washbourn Gardens, Richmond Baptist Church and Anzac Park in Nelson. Gathering points have also been registered in Blenheim, Picton, Christchurch and even one in Redding, USA. There is still plenty of time to register a gathering point, instructions can be found on the Facebook page, and if you are unable to attend one of the registered points. Cherrill and Paula encourage people to sing the national anthem wherever they may be. Words can also be downloaded off the events Facebook page. For more information about registering a gathering point or the event in general, email Paula and Cherrill at nzanthemonevoice@gmail. com.

Owner sought for lost photos

Jessie Johnston

When shopping for a washing basket last Thursday, Pat Rainbow came across an interesting find. “We went shopping for a new washing basket and the colour I wanted was at the bottom of the pile. We lifted the top ones off and in the basket that I wanted were these two photos,” says Pat. “I am into family history and genealogy and I [felt that they would be precious] to the family. So we brought them home and I got in touch with the Waimea Weekly.” The two photos were found in the store Goods 2 U, on Queen St in Richmond, on Thursday, October 1. One of the photos shows two young ladies in dresses standing outside a weatherboard building while the second photo is of the same two ladies sitting on a deck with a young child. If these photos are yours or you know who they might belong to, please email the Waimea Weekly at editorial@waimea weekly.co.nz or phone 544 9037.

Brook Sanctuary gets $100k boost The Brook Sanctuary Trust has received a boost of $127,000 to help complete the next stages of its development. Associate Conservation Minister Nicky Wagner on Monday announced Community Conservation Partnership Fund grants for projects in the Nelson and Marlborough re-

gions. The funding will allow the trust to eradicate pests within the site, initiate pest monitoring and prepare native species for reintroduction. “The sanctuary will allow native birds to flourish along with 250 species of native plants. The sanctuary is expected to transform the surrounding area over time.”

Fashion show for Age Concern Age Concern Nelson/Tasman celebrated International Day of Older People in style last Thursday. The Richmond Town Hall became a catwalk and six members of the community strutted their stuff, wearing clothes generously provided by Fashion Central. Organisers decided to mark the internationally-recognised day with a fashion show as older people don’t always get the opportunity to go to the shops themselves and see what is on the racks, so they bought the

fashion right up to their tables. Those attending the event included rest home residents and others from within the community. Musical entertainment was provided by three students from Nelson College for Girls and makeup for the models was done by the hair and beauty students of NMIT. As well as lending the clothes for the event, Fashion Central also gifted vouchers to every guest offering 20 per cent off clothing from their store.

Wedding show ‘bigger and better’

Bride-to-be, Emma WhitcherHayton, centre, with Christine Irvine, left, and Kathryn Parr, right, at the Got it Covered stall at the Nelson Wedding Show at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. It was the first time the annual show had been held at the stadium. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Jessie Johnston The Nelson Wedding Show was once again full to the brim with inspiration for brides and grooms-to-be. This year the event was held at Saxton Stadium and organiser Sharron Page-Moreton says she was extremely happy with the venue and how it was laid out. “It was a new venue, we were at the NMIT last year, mainly because the Trafalgar Centre was still not up and going, so we chose to go to a bigger venue to see how it would work and it worked really well. The space was amazing, the lay out worked really well and the exhibitors were all very happy.” With over 60 exhibitors on hand for advice and the ability to help create anyone’s dream wedding, it’s no wonder the event managed to attract hundreds of people. Organisers are still to reach a final tally but they say public numbers were greater than last year. As well as a range of exhibits including equipment hire, photographers, wedding stationery and cakes, the Nelson Wedding Show also incorporated a fashion show featuring bridal designs from New Zealand designer Sophie Voon. Organisers wish to say “a very big thank you to all the exhibitors who participated - the standard was high and feedback fantastic.”

Merger should be public: It is disappointing that Nelson city councillors voted to move discussion about the level of funding for regional development to be 'public excluded.' Especially because NCC commits over $1 million a year to economic and tourism service delivery. The merger of the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency and Nelson Tasman Tourism may result in all funding going to tourism. Ratepayers have a right to open discussion of such matters. This was a key issue in the last election, but councillors have conveniently forgotten that because of vested interests. Council must be above such nonsense. Open government is the only way to discuss matters that have relevance to the levies imposed on ratepayers. Dan McGuire. Roundabout problems: Indications on roundabouts. Is the indicater lever just below the steering wheel now on all cars, just a thing not be used leaving roundabouts? I now find this to be quite frustrating when waiting to go. Dave Familton. Coral Haussmann and Anne Williams of Nelson Musical Theatre were amongst 13 stall holders at the second annual Trash and Treasure sale. The use of the money is still to be decided. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Getting fit in St Arnaud St Arnaud is showing other small communities how to stay active. With help from Sport Tasman, local volunteer Lois Rutherford and “her ladies’’ have set up a fitness group which has quickly become an important part of life in the village. Since March, the appropriately named St Arnaud Circuit Breakers have been meeting three mornings a week in the community hall or in a room in the nearby Alpine Café. Up to 15 people aged from their late 40s to over 80 go through a thorough workout led by Lois, 62, who is a former gym instructor and owner.

The group of mainly women has acquired a range of gym equipment including exercise bikes, a stairwalker, treadmill, weights, swiss balls and boxing gear through donations and fundraising to give their circuitbased programme more grunt. Lois, who retired to St Arnaud four years ago, says she and her friends had talked about the need to stay active as they got older but it wasn’t until she saw a notice about Sport Tasman offering to help set up exercise groups that she did something about it. “When we get to a certain age we tend to slacken off a little and

lose fitness, so setting up a group was mainly about getting everyone up and moving again,’’ Lois says. As well as circuit training, it involves power walking and short jogs around the neighbourhood, with Lois planning to add cycling and even an outdoor boot camp once the weather warms up. She says the results have been amazing. People who had struggled to get up and down off the floor were now “up and away’’. For more information email Lois at olittlehobbit@yahoo.co.nz or 022 Lois Rutherford, front row second from left, with the St Arnaud Circuit Breakers fitness group. Photo: Niki Morrell. 601 0642.

Just a thought...

We have heard many heartening reports recently of the warm welcome many people in Europe are offering refugees. Those advocating and offering hospitality far outnumber those who are fearful and cold-hearted. Although the dayto-day realities for both refugees and welcomers may be challenging, there are usually very positive spin-offs – a feeling of understanding growing and friendship deepening; priorities in life changing for the better. This has certainly been the case for people I know who have been involved in welcoming refugees into our Nelson region. Recently I was reflecting on a bible story where Jesus is telling off some of his followers. He is referring to their greed, their ambition and their bickering. Using typical ‘over the top’ and very colourful Hebrew imagery, he teaches that hands that are greedy, feet that trample others, eyes that are envious are better removed than to run Father David the danger of missing Gruschow out on God’s Kingdom. Parish Priest, Our This of course is not Lady of Perpetual very politically correct Help Parish, Richlanguage today! But mond, Nelson, his message is: better to Moderator, Saabandon the ambitions cred Heart Parish, they symbolise in case Takaka. the disciples lose their place in his kingdom. (Mark 9:42-48) One of the paradoxes of life is that when we make the effort to reach out with a helping hand or a listening ear to others, life becomes more enjoyable, more satisfying. When we are locked in our own worlds, the opposite tends to be true. As school holidays continue you may perhaps be able to put aside a little more time than usual to ‘smell the flowers’ as it were – to appreciate anew God’s wonderful creation, and in prayer to praise and thank God for the wonderful gifts of life, of other people, and of faith.

The Stonewood Homes Nelson team is proud to unveil their latest show home, which can aptly be described as a piece of architectural genius. From their brand new ‘Your Style’ designer range, Stonewood Homes is extremely proud of what this home showcases and what the range has to offer their clients -that being an architecturally designed building, capable of meeting a number of client requirements both in size and it’s fit-out. The show home measures 239 metres square, however, if your budget, lifestyle, section or fam-

ily requirements mean you don’t need a home that size, Stonewood Homes have three other options, all mirroring the same architectural design. There are also a number of standard levels of fit-out that you can choose from, depending on your lifestyle, requirements and your budget. These options start with their first choice specification featuring more economical solutions regarding fit-out material, floor coverings and front of wall bathroom ware etc. The ‘Essential’ range goes a step up in terms of quality, style and

price. The ‘Classic’ range, which you can view first hand in their show room, is their high-spec model featuring over height doors and ceilings that create grandeur and spaciousness and premium quality fit-out materials. Add to this the ‘Eco Sure’ range and the ability to create your own spec by mixing and matching, and you have the entire spectrum covered. Clients can base their fit-out on their preferred range before selecting key areas of their home that they would like to upgrade, whether it’s the carpet, kitchen, bathroom or any other aspects of their home. Stonewood Homes Nelson is thrilled to open the

doors of their show home to the public, and while the grand opening won’t be until this weekend, there are plenty of things you can look forward to admiring. The home features the latest coloured laminex kitchen ware, stone bench tops, with a feature kitchen bulkhead, high quality tiling throughout, feature fire place, a double shower in the ensuite and in the main bathroom people will be interested in the stand alone, raised bath. The entire house has been upgraded with high spec carpet, a ducted heat pump system, the usual double glazing and, being architecturally designed, it also has quite a presence from the street.

The Richmond Law team, from left, Jacintha Atkinson, Jane Quinton, Robert Whittle, Billie Pritchard, Joy Lindley, Diane Bennett, Stephen Sansom, Nicola Hunter, Felicia Livingstone, Lee McMurtrie, Sarah Ferguson and Michael Abbott.

As the first law practice to be established in Richmond in 1975, the burgeoning business of Richmond Law is now completing a further milestone in its illustrious history. In the last eight years, the practice has doubled the size of its staff and over the last year it has worked hard to meet the continued growth in the Richmond region. As a result of the increasing demand from its clients and its increasing client base, Richmond Law has recently completed the enhancement of its capacity. This project has included the necessary expansion of its premises and as a result the Richmond Law building on McGlashen Ave has now doubled its footprint with construction recently being completed. The architecturally-designed building incorporates five additional offices, a multi-media meeting/board room, on-site filing and storage space, and a spacious whanau/function room. The multimedia meeting room is designed to include a large high-definition television screen to enable documents and web-based seminars to be easily presented amongst multiple parties, allowing staff to address legal issues in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner. Their whanau/function room is the

most interesting part of the expansion and something you wouldn’t normally come across in professional offices. Richmond Law founder Ray Carter believed that staff are family and even though he has retired from the practice, this legacy remains a critical part of the business. The room is designed to accommodate staff as well as clients, with full kitchen facilities and a relaxing private living space for staff to take their breaks. The partners and staff at Richmond Law are thrilled with the final design plan and build and wish to publicly thank those who were key to the success of its construction, including JTB Architects of Nelson and Darryl Gardiner Building Construction. Externally the design features a seamless extension to the existing building while the interior includes spaciousness, functionality and an effective use of natural light. These features achieve a friendly and open environment throughout the offices and meeting spaces and a welcoming atmosphere for clients and staff. As part of increasing its capacity, Richmond Law has also employed two new qualified and experienced staff to ensure the commercial interests of its clients continue to be met. Cawthron’s legacy lives on One of Nelson’s most prolific figures is being remembered for his contributions to the city this week, 100 years on from his death. Once described as “Nelson’s grand old man,” philanthropist Thomas Cawthron is now a local household name, and without him some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and institutions would not be here today. It was in his retirement in 1884 that Cawthron looked for ways to use his fortune to benefit the Nelson community after a successful career as a businessman in Nelson. He lent 700 pounds to the Nelson Institute Library and Museum for alterations and additions to its Hardy St building, and when the old building burned down in 1906, he gifted 500 pounds in 1911 to complete its replacement. He also helped to finance extensions and additions to Nelson hospital, and fund a new nurse’s home. In 1912 he donated 5000 pounds to the Nelson School of Music, and a loan of 2000 pounds. He also bought and installed the pipe organ that is still used there today. In the same year he paid for the continuation of the posts and chains on Rocks Rd, and gifted 1000ha near Dun Mountain to the Nelson City Council as a public scenic and recreation reserve, known as Cawthron Park. The Nelson Cathedral

It opened in 1921 and remains a world-class science research centre. Trust Board secretary at the Cawthron Institute, Judene Edgar, says that he made the greatest philanthropic contribution to Nelson city. “In his day, he was known as a shrewd businessman and people didn’t understand his generosity,” she says. “There are lots of heartwarming things he did, and there were so many other sides to him.”

Obituary: Ian Kenneth Smith Ian Kenneth (Ken) Smith will be remembered on Wednesday afternoon at the venue he helped create. Ken died at Nelson Hospital on Friday night, aged 68. The depth of emerging talent among Nelson road cyclists was underlined when four of the region’s riders won yellow jerseys in one of the country’s biggest junior tours. Sisters Michaela (under-19) and Britney Kerr (under-17) and Finn Fisher-Black (under-15) made a clean sweep of the yellow tour leader’s jersey, sprint jersey and King of the Mountain jersey in their age group’s at last week’s Yunca Junior Tour of Southland. Nelson’s Kaio Lart won the under-13 boys tour while Finn’s sister Niamh also had a good tour finishing in second place in the under-17 girls behind Britney. Michaela was particularly impressive winning all six stages of the under-19 girls tour that started with a 2.6km prologue around Teretonga Racetrack. Although Michaela was involved in some close sprint finishes, she made it clear she was the strongest rider in the peloton breaking clear to win the 51km fourth stage by four minutes.

Jeanette Garrett is now offering lessons for adult riders to improve their skills in dressage. From left, Anne Carey, Sharon Brinsdon, Jeanette Garrett and Patricia Warhurst at the arena at Rough Island.

Horse riding lessons at Rough Island

If you own a horse and want to improve your riding, Jeanette Garrett is offering the perfect weekday opportunity. Jeanette Garrett is a registered Equestrian Sports NZ Performance Coach and Coach Educator, and her sessions at the Rough Island dressage arenas are all about adult riders improving themselves and their horse with other likeminded riders. Run on the first and third Thursdays of every month, Jeanette welcomes anyone interested to drop-in for a session with her and any other participating riders. The educational sessions are for riders

interested in dressage and will therefore focus on flat work only. No one is locked into any of the lessons, so if you can’t make it on the day, it’s no problem. With lessons now underway and set to run throughout the summer, bring your horse along and work with the group on whatever you would like to achieve, whether it’s transitioning into a canter or more complex movements. Lessons run at a minimal cost to riders from 10:30pm until 12pm. For more information, send Jeanette an email at getjeanette@clear.net.nz or visit her website at www.clickwithhorses.co

Masters Games wrap up Richmond’s Fiona Young only intended competing in three events at the NZCT South Island Masters Games which ended after nine days of competition in Nelson on Sunday. But that soon changed with Fiona getting carried away in the excitement of the games. She was one of 2200 athletes who participated in the games and like many of them competed in more than one of the 42 sports. “I started with three but then it just snowballed,” Fiona says. “I always wanted to try Waka Ama so I’d entered that and I’d also entered the cross-country and indoor triathlon. “Then I decided, with a few friends, that I wanted to enter a team’s event so we entered the mini-golf and the quiz night. Then I did three indoor rowing events on Saturday - it was great fun, it was great to be out here competing.” Fiona ended up with eight medals, including three golds, and says she would recommend the games to anyone. “The have-a-go activities are

It was extremely well organised by Sport Tasman and their volunteers did a fantastic job. “The fantastic Nelson weather added to the holiday feel of the event and I am sure visitors to Nelson would have been very happy.” Fiona says their team, Chicks on the Run, are now seriously considering entering the

World Masters Games which are to be held in Auckland in 2017. Sport Tasman’s event organiser Rita Merriman says Fiona was one of the many competitors who “got caught up in the fun of the games and entered in more events”. Upper Moutere 81-year-old Arthur Dunkley entered in a number of track and field events, winning the 5km cross-country run in a respectable 34 minutes 49 seconds. She says Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne also competed in the mountainbike cross-country, winning a bronze medal in his age group, while Richmond councillor Judene Edgar competed in the indoor triathlon, duathlon and 5km walk, winning silver in the triathlon. Rita says the games were a big success with the three news sports, Waka Ama, stand-up paddle boarding and indoor triathlon, proving especially popular. Nelson will be hosting the South Island Masters Games again in 2017.

The Nelson Whalers celebrate winning the national title in Hamilton last week.

Inline hockey team wins national champs Nelson’s Inline Hockey team are national champions after an overtime win in Hamilton last week. Nelson Whalers won the senior men’s grade at nationals, the first time in the club’s history. Goalie Sean McShea won MVP goalie of the tournament, while Vinnie Fuller won MVP player of the grade. The Whalers got off to a tough start, playing the first nine minutes of their first pool match without their star goalie, who was late due to a flight delay. The score was 2-2 when Sean arrived, but once he went in goal the Nelson side ran out 11-7 winners.

Nelson then beat New Plymouth Ravens 9-1, Manawatu 8-2 and Rimutaka Renegades 5-2 to remain undefeated heading into the semifinal. There, the Whalers beat the Hamilton Devils 4-2. In the final, Nelson played Mount Wellington Panthers, the team they had beaten 11-7 on day one of the tournament. But it took them until over-time to beat them a second time, 8-7. Alethea Stove says the win was fantastic. “It’s certainly the biggest result in recent times. We are the only South Island team so we have to be pretty committed to keep travelling up north. We’re delighted.”
