Incident free Guy Fawkes Phillip Rollo

It was a quiet end to Guy Fawkes with the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade saying they were not called to a single fireworks related incident. Guy Fawkes Day was officially held on Monday night but some late evening rain and tougher sale restrictions meant it was not as busy as previous years, according to Richmond Volunteer Fire Chief Ralph Lonsdale. Although he admits it has been in decline for a number of years. “From our

point of view it was very quiet. We haven’t had a call out so far anyway,” he said on Tuesday morning. “The weather helped, I know it was windy which isn’t good for us, but there was a shower of rain which helped.” There was some potential for problems after it was reported that someone was setting off fireworks near The Grampians on Saturday night, he says. Fireworks went on sale to the public on October 27 and were only allowed to be sold between that date and November 5.

After this date, fireworks sales are illegal. Ralph says most people celebrated Guy Fawkes on Saturday night. Ralph was fully supportive of public displays such as the Coca Cola Fireworks Night at the Nelson Ralph Speedway. Public displays Lonsdale. were held in some of the country’s larger centres. However, he did admit some families preference was to set

them off in the backyard. “I’m a guy that grew up with Guy Fawkes Day, having bonfires on the beach and sky rockets but I’m sure the fire service is pleased that the period of buying these things is very restricted. The fact you have to buy them in a bagged lot probably helps us a little too.” Ralph says some people will hold onto fireworks until New Year’s Eve but the main problems in the past can be dated back to when sky rockets were still legal over the counter. “Most modern fireworks do not go as high in the air.”

Popular poker run returns

Local motorcycle club Route 6 is hosting its annual poker run this month. The Richmond-based club hosted its first poker run last year which attracted 108 bikes with many husband and wife teams taking part. Route 6 club captain Richard Eddington says the ride is a great day out and a chance to meet some fellow motorbike lovers while taking in the region’s beauty. “Last year was a really good day and as long as the weather is nice we hope to have a few more bikes than last year,” he says. The run is being held on Saturday, November 17 with registration from 10am at Harrington’s Beer Café in Richmond (formerly Robbie’s Bar and Bistro) and will finish at the Sprig & Fern in Richmond with a barbeque for all participants. Cost is $10 per person. Richard says the prizes are “very, very good” and all proceeds will be donated to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust. School takes legal action

Lisa Foote and Casey Takao sort out clothing and toys for this Saturday’s BNZ Plunket Baby Bonanza. The event will be held at the Hope Hall from 9am to 12pm and entry is $2 per person. There are 40 stalls selling pre-loved and new baby items.

A court case appears to be the only thing that can save Salisbury School from closing for good. The Salisbury School board filed for judicial review proceeding in the High Court in Wellington against the Minister of Education’s decision to close the school, yesterday. The school has also sought an interim order that ministry officials take no further steps to shift the girls and close the school in December until the legality of the minister’s decision is determined by the court. The move comes after Minister of Education Hekia Parata confirmed last week that she proposes to close the residential school, moving the all-female roll to the

co-education Halswell Residential School in Christchurch. A letter emailed to all Salisbury School supporters states the reason for proceeding with legal action was because the board felt justice had “not been done” by the Ministry of Education’s consultation process, and that “Salisbury’s students are at risk as a result”. “Our fight to save Salisbury has support from parents and the local community. Already, some members of the community have offered pledges to help towards any legal action, which we are very grateful for,” it went on to say. Board chairperson Helen McDonnell says it is very unfortunate that they have to go down the path of legal action. “But we have

no choice if we wish to ensure the safety of our students, and that there is sufficient provision of appropriate education for their needs,” she says. The final decision came just one week after Salisbury School principal Brenda Ellis and three board members met with the Minister of Education in Wellington. Salisbury School employs more than 60 staff and cares for around 65 students, with another 30 based in its outreach programme. When a school closes, the Ministry of Education considers whether the land and buildings are required for further educational purposes, despite opening a $4 million Maori immersion school next door earlier this year.

Revolutionary step for pest traps A two year trap trial was launched at Nelson Lakes last week and if successful could make its way around the country. The revolutionary self-resetting traps will be deployed in the area of the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project that is already intensively managed to prevent pests. If the two year trial is successful, the benefits of the A24 gas powered trap could potentially provide significant savings in servicing the traditional traps that are currently in place. One of the major benefits of the new traps is that they can be activated up to 24 times before they need to be serviced, compared to the current conventional traps that are “unavailable” once a trap is sprung, until it is manually reset again. These new traps, that have passed animal welfare

standards, can repeatedly kill and reset before they need to be serviced. That represents a potentially huge saving in time and effort, according to DOC. Great-spotted kiwi have been successfully reintroduced to the area and to ensure their ability to breed without the young being killed by stoats, a protective network of traps must be set across the sanctuary The traps will also help protect breeding populations of kaka, robin, bellbird and other native species that thrive at Lake Rotoiti. Staff at DOC’s Nelson Lakes Office are keen to see the trial underway, says Grant Harper, Nature Recovery Project team leader. “These traps will ensure that DOC staff can divert more of their energy into other aspects of the project.” DOC worked alongside DOC ranger Jenny Long sets one of the new A24 gas powered Friends of Rotoiti during the process. traps at Nelson Lakes.

Volunteers involved in cycle trail build Phillip Rollo The community is rallying behind the Great Taste Cycle Trail with huge numbers of volunteer groups putting their hands up to help. One of the groups actively involved in the physical build of the trail is Waimea College. The hard materials class has just completed a cycle bridge that will go some-

where on the trail while a group of special education students are cutting hedges back to a height of 2.4 metres to make it safer for cyclists. Teachers from both sets of students approached Stuart Hughes of the Cycle Trails Trust to get involved. The special education students have used the already completed segments of the trail during their outdoor education pro-

gramme and enjoyed it so much they found out ways to help out. Hard technology teacher Paul Daubney says it’s a great community project for the building students to be involved in. “Yeah we’ve enjoyed it. We can’t exactly do a lot of work that we have to fund ourselves so this way the cycle trail gets a new bridge and the students get the building experience.” Cycle Trails Trust executive officer Fiona

Newey says rotary clubs had been doing work on the trail and was surprised by the amount of volunteers asking to help out. “There are a whole lot of people pitching in,” she says. “A lot of people and business people have lent their time and energy because they know it’s a good thing and they can see they long term benefits of it.” A suspension bridge across the Waimea River is the next segment to be opened.

The digital switch over has resulted in some Murchison and St Arnaud residents finding themselves with unwanted televisions. So the Tasman District Council has been offering a service where, for just $10, the residents can dispose of their television set at a drop off area, so they don’t get thrown in landfill. The TV Take Back Programme aims to divert up to 500,000 televisions from going to landfill. As the digital rollout continues, Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council will look at indentifying further recycling options for unwanted or unused televisions. The best ham in town Wakefield Butcher Lindsay Alderson’s boneless ham finished runner up at the NZ 100% Ham of the Year competition run by New Zealand Pork. Lindsay won the award for his boneless sugar cured beech smoked ham. He entered his ham in the competition, hoping to finish in the top ten, so he was delighted to get a phone call telling him he had placed second in New Zealand. “I started my butchering career straight out of school when I was 15 and have been curing hams pretty much since then, so I’ve had a lot of

time to perfect my technique. It’s great to have recognition from the industry,” says Lindsay. The 100% New Zealand Ham Competition was established to celebrate New Zealand’s finest ham and to help customers identify and appreciate local, sustainable ham, and support NZ pork producers. With Christmas just around the corner, orders for hams have already started coming in and Lindsay advises people to get in quick if they want an award winning ham on their table this festive season. Wakefield Butchery is an absolute treasure trove right here on our own doorstep. They stock a wide range of products with everything you would expect to find in a genuine, old fashioned butcher shop as well as gourmet delights that are often difficult to source. Wandering around the store you will find poussin, duck, guinea fowl, pheasant, whitebait, sweetbreads, duck fat (perfect for the best ever roast potatoes), Lindsay’s own range of gourmet salamis, chorizo and bier stix and a range of seasonal vegetables, the majority of which are locally sourced and organically grown. Gluten free stocks, coatings and cake mixes are also available. A new addition to his stock is a range of award winning dairy goods from Whangapeka Downs Ltd including milk, cheeses, butter and yoghurt. Lindsay likes to support other local producers and sells products including Villa Grove olive oils, Kev’s Kitchen Relishes and jams, locally grown hazelnuts and farm fresh eggs, some of which are huge and include the odd double and triple yolkers. “I think the fact we beat the professionals surprised us a bit.” Organiser Rex Kelly says it was great to see the loggers having a good time together over the course of the day. Nelson’s axemen had a chance to prepare for their championship bout to be held this weekend when they displayed standing chops and underhand events throughout the day. Brightwater axeman Rhys Hornecastle said he was enjoying himself and saw it as a “bit of a training day”, for the coming weekend’s competition which will see Nelson play host to members from the New South Wales wood chopping team. Four world champion axemen will attend the event held at the Speights Ale House on Saturday, including Adam Lowe, a former Nelsonian.

Nelson band seek career kickstart Phillip Rollo Having just opened for YouTube sensations The Make Believe, Nelson threepiece band Little Oceans is hoping the internet can shoot them to stardom as well. Little Oceans, which is made up of brothers Josh and Sam Edmonds, and vocalist Matthew Johnston, have entered two demos on The Audience – a website that gives a $10,000 NZ On Airfunded grant to the band with the most votes each month. Focus Harder, the band’s second unreleased song to feature on the website

currently sits inside the top three for the November charts and they’re urging Nelson to get behind them and vote. The grant will go towards filming a music video and recording an album. “Going from recording every song ourselves to going into a studio and actually seeing how they do it properly would be such an awesome experience,” says Josh, who admits he has been spamming his friends on Facebook, telling them to vote. “At the end of the day we can win $10,000 so it’s worth it.” The trio played their first live performance in Nelson since ditching their

Camp hosts needed for Lake Rotoiti The call is out for volunteer camp hosts to help look after summer visitors to the Kerr Bay and West Bay campgrounds by Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park. Volunteer camp hosts were trialled last summer for the first time, with great success. The hosts were well received by campers, with reports of a greater feeling of security at the campgrounds, knowing someone was keeping a round-the-clock

eye on campers’ welfare. Hosts receive campers to their booked sites, book late arrivals into the camps and liaise with the Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre and Department of Conservation rangers. Volunteers get a free powered campsite for acting as hosts, and there is no requirement to handle money or clean facilities. After an ad in their magazine, New Zealand Motor Caravan Association members

have been filling the spots up fast, most fitting a two-week stint at Lake Rotoiti into wider tours. Greg Carter, DOC Nelson Lakes Visitor Assets Programme Manager, wonders if there are more Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough locals who would like to be camp hosts. “Almost all our volunteers last summer came from the North Island, but it is a great chance for locals to have a free holiday at the lake and help visitors

to enjoy our National Park. One local who did a stint was from St Arnaud - they left their house and stayed in their campervan down at the lake and had a great time looking after visitors.” More information about being a volunteer camp host is available through contacting Nelson Lakes Area Office on 521 1806, email nelsonlakesvolunteers@doc.govt.nz or on the DOC website www.doc.govt.nz.

November 4 1972 and Jock and Liz Delaney were married on November 4 1977. They discovered the unique similarities when having drinks one weekend around five years ago. Ever since, they have decided to celebrate their anniversaries together. “It was a get to meet your neighbours evening and then all of a sudden we were talking about wedding anniversaries and it all came out,” says Liz. None of the couples were even aware of anyone outside their street that shared the same date.

A Passion For Flowers It’s Bloom’n Easy to see why the newest shop in the Richmond Mall is turning heads, with the smell and sight of fresh flowers causing a stir, the opening of Wendy Sixtus’ new flowers and gift store has brought smiles to the faces of Richmond. Bloom’n Easy makes buying flowers affordable. Whether you want a gorgeous bunch for a friend, or fancy a cheerful posy for your home, Wendy’s daily selection of fresh peonies, lilies, agapanthas and colourful flowers will brighten your day. Wendy’s personally grown flowers are handpicked daily, along with other local growers who she said before now, haven’t had much of an outlet in the area. “I want to support our local growers, supplying their flowers in store, getting them into the homes of local people.” Wendy’s new venture will also see her sell delightful gifts, like locally made ‘Natures Bubbles’ soaps, beautiful Christmas decorations, and items that she says compliment the purchase of flowers, for yourself or others. “A little something extra goes well with flowers, and I’ve selected a collection of lovely gifts for the store.” With fantastic feedback pouring in from customers and foot traffic, and a dedicated and fun team of four women with a passion for flowers by her side, Wendy looks forward to seeing you in Bloom’n Easy.

Owner operator Wendy Sixtus wants to support local growers. “Flowers are universal, visit us and surprise someone you love or treat yourself.” Bloom’n Easy will open from 9am till 5.30pm weekdays with a late Thursday night, 9am till 5pm Saturday, and 10am till 4pm Sunday, or give the store a call on 544 2510. Dancer struck by boy shortage A teenage ballroom dancer trains alone and is unable to compete until she finds a male partner. Victoria Hillman, 17, has been dancing since she was three years old. She first began with ballet, jazz and contemporary before realising her potential in both ballroom and Latin over the past two years. Having competed at the Australian Ballroom-Latin Championship at the start of the year, everything went to a standstill when her dance partner decided to call it quits.

Victoria, who attends Garin College, admits male dancers are hard to come by and knew as soon as he quit how hard it would be to find a replacement. “I knew it would be hard but I hoped someone would come along. But there’s just no one that I can find,” says Victoria. “There’s always a shortage of guys compared to girls. They’d just rather play rugby than dance I guess.” Ideally, Victoria is after someone with experience in dance and is aged be-

If she is unable to find a partner, Victoria could be forced to move back to another form of dancing. “I’ve done lots of stuff but ballroom and Latin is where I want to go.” To contact Victoria, email victoriahill man@cloud.garincollege.ac.nz or call 027 739 0633.

WINDOW ON WAKEFIELD Wakefield Community Council Report Lynne Scanlen of Focus Wakefield attended the October meeting of the Wakefield Community Council to report on progress with their proposed projects. The application for funding from community grants from the Tasman District Council was successful with $8000 being awarded to be divided between four different projects. The first issue of our local newspaper “Window On Wake-

field” will appear in letterboxes in November. This will overlap with the last issue in the Waimea Weekly. Sonia Emerson is collecting the articles etc for this. We already have enough advertisers to pay for the first edition. WCC received a letter regarding issues of safety on the Pigeon Valley South Branch Road. The school bus uses this road and it is felt that the narrowness of the road and speed are dangers to children in the area getting on and off the bus. TDC has done a speed warrant on the road and say it doesn’t warrant a reduction in the speed limit. The cycleway is currently being formed past the end of Higgins Road, through the paper road which passes through private land. Landowners have been informed of the issues. The next meeting of the Wakefield Community Council will be held in the lounge, St. John’s Centre, on Tuesday 13 November at 7.30pm. All welcome. Caroline Gibbs, Deputy Chair. A Change for Window on Wakefield For those of you who have lived here in Wakefield for some time, you will know that in the past we have been very fortunate to have our own community newspaper. The very first was produced on 3 June 1983 and the most recent in August 2011. As a temporary measure, the Wakefield Community Council decided to follow Brightwa-

ters footsteps and run a 2-3 page spread in the Waimea W e e k l y each month which has been called Window on Wakefield. We would like to sincerely thank the Waimea Weekly for all of their efforts and assistance with the advertising, content, images and publication of this section each month. You have made this process as easy as possible, and have been very supportive of our community. I think it’s fair to say however, that as a whole, the community felt the loss of the long standing source of information, communication and connectivity that the Village News, in its various forms, had given us over the years. The Focus Wakefield group certainly received that feedback at the public meeting that was held on 23 August. Therefore, when the opportunity arose for us to reintroduce a community newspaper, it was one that we simply

couldn’t refuse. As a result, this will be our last Window on Wakefield in the Waimea Weekly. Going forward, each month, residents of Wakefield Village will receive a physical copy of the new Window on Wakefield, our local news, in their letter boxes. We hope that this newspaper will contribute to us engaging and connecting as a community. Once again, a huge thank you to the Waimea Weekly for all of their help over the last year. WINDOW ON WAKEFIELD Playgroup is held on every Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Methodist Church on the corner of Edward and Arrow Street. Over term three the children have been involved in different interesting activities. Some of the things the children have made include caterpillars and masks and everyone who attended on the last day of term planted a potato in a bucket to take home to watch it grow until it is able to be eaten at Christmas time. The children also regularly visit the Wakefield School library and take books home to read. Come along to meet other mums and children from around the area and enjoy a friendly chat and a cuppa while

Wakefield School Gala The Wakefield School PTA along with the staff and children would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to the community for their support of the Wakefield School Twilight Gala. What a fantastic occasion it turned out to be; from the wonderful entertainment, fun children’s activities and displays, the raffle and silent auction, stalls full of great bargains and the yummy food, much of which was caught locally and processed by Lindsay and his team at Wakefield Butchery. Due to all this wonderful generosity and support we were able to raise $25,500 for Wakefield School. An incredible result! This money will be used to purchase new desk top computers for the classrooms and other ICT equipment which provide our children with quality, up to date educational resources to support the classroom programmes and further their learning. For more information, please contact Paul McConachie, Tasman District Council, 543 8525 Foxhill Hall for Hire Five minutes drive from Wakefield on S.H.6, Foxhill Hall started life as a school. In 1937 The Foxhill Hall Assn Incorporated was established and bought the building from the Education Board for £100.00. Named “Rutherford Memorial Hall” in honour of Ernest Lord Rutherford, there is a display in front of the hall which gives details of his connection with the building. In the decades since 1937, many members of the community have served on the Foxhill Hall Associaton as trustees, and the hall is still a popular venue for events. The current committee recognises the hall’s significance as an historic building, because of its connection with Ernest Lord Rutherford. The building was formerly the Foxhill school, where Rutherford first started school. The building was modified to its present layout in the early 1950s. The committee hopes to re-develop the hall as a vibrant community centre for the district south of Wakefield-Kohatu and recreate a community focus, lost since the closure of the school in 2001. The hall committee also manages the tennis courts which are designated a reserve and managed by the committee on behalf of the Tasman District Council. The courts are available for use free of charge. If interested in hosting a local event or activity or hireage for social events please contact Helen Pullan, Booking Officer, 541 8058 for details of rates and conditions of hire. Wakefield Community Swimming Pool The pool will be open until the end of March and season keys can be purchased from Wakefield School. The pool committee would like to thank caretaker Bruce Pulowski for his ongoing hard work.

Outdoor expo ready for action Andrew Board The first ever outdoor recreation expo will be held in Nelson this weekend. Organised by Sport Tasman, the expo will feature more than 45 exhibitors from around Nelson and New Zealand all with the aim of getting people into the outdoors and doing it safely. Exhibitors include retailers, commercial operators, government agencies and local clubs. Dave Tippett, of Sport Tasman, says the expo has enjoyed strong support from those in the industry and is confident of a good turnout. “The expo is for anyone and everyone, a complete novice to the enthusiast. It’s an awesome opportunity for those who haven’t been involved in outdoor recreation before to come down and speak to the people in the know, speak to the experts and maybe find a new passion.” Dave says the expo stemmed from the outdoor recreation forum that Sport Tasman runs. “Basically I saw there was funding available for the outdoor

Photo: Andrew Board. recreation side of safety and I got together with the people from Safe at the Top, we threw around some ideas and the expo came out.” They then teamed up with the

Mountain Safety Council and the Adventure Smart Outdoor Safety codes to help push the safety aspect of the outdoors and worked on attracting exhibitors. He says anything outdoors – from fishing and boating to tramping and mountain biking to kayaking and surf rescue – will be on display, as well as the secondary Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter. “It’s about getting more people more active more often in the outdoors, safely. We want them to return so they can do it all again another day, that’s what it’s all about. “There is a lot of media attention around outdoor safety and a lot of it can be so avoidable, it’s just being prepared and knowing the conditions before you go,” he says. The expo is being held at the Tahunanui Recreation Reserve from 10am to 4pm this Sunday, November 11. Right next door, also at the Tahunanui Reserve, will be the Bowater Motor Group Top Team competition.

Hey, thanks for reading our paper. Have you got a story? Give us a call on 544 9037

I hope you all had a great Labour weekend. We were so lucky with the weather and at our place it was just as well, as we had up to 12 folk staying in two houses and it was the first time we had been able to all eat out on the deck and really appreciate the garden. Enough of all that and back to the garden; which is really never ending at this time of the year but also very rewarding as everything is looking so good. I spent five hours or so yesterday weeding and discovering perennials that were lurking in places that I had forgotten about. The Hostas are all coming up and looking great and most have put on weight over the winter (like someone else I could mention….) and are really looking full and lovely I thought we could talk a bit about what to grow to encourage beneficial insects into the garden. Bees are so important and I am noticing more of these guys around this year. Planting lavenders in spots by the vege garden and borage, planted in pots so you can move it around the garden, is a great way to attract bees. They also love beans and fruit tree flowers and most flowers that are white, purple and blue (my scabiosa under the roses is alive with bees) are the colours they will go for. Parsley, dill and fennel, when left to flower encourages beneficial insects into the garden as do marigolds and calendulas (tagetes). These not only attract bees but they also produce a substance that kills soil nematodes, the tiny eelworms that eat the roots of plants and cause havoc around the garden. Cottage garden plants such as tansy, achillea,

echinops and queen annes lace encourage ladybirds and hoverflies. The larvae of these guys eat aphids so they will be fat and full in most gardens from now on. Encouraging beneficial insects into the garden is not an exact science so just experiment and find out what works best for your situation.

Tips

Thisks wee

• You can start to plant out your tomato seedlings now. Only select the strongest plants and keep some back to plant in 2-3 week’s time. Always put the stakes in first so as not to damage the roots. • Direct sow beans in most areas now-also sweet corn, beetroot and lettuce for a constant supply. • Check plants for whitefly, aphid and caterpillar. You can spray with neem oil and neem soap if necessary. (Neem soap is available at Trade Aid in Hardy St). • Trim passionfruit vines now that the frosts have past (we hope!) • Start hoeing up soil around the first potatoes to sprout. • If you cannot stand to see the sad looking daffodil leaves falling over everything you can cut them back now but ensure you feed them with bulb food as well. Keep up the good work and enjoy your efforts – until next time….

Nelson’s John Gourdie in action during The Rock FM Motueka Drag Racing on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Drag clocks 254 km/hour Phillip Rollo

It took one competitor 14 hours just to get to the start of The Rock FM Motueka Dragway but only 7.994 seconds to get to the end of it. Invercargill’s Bruce Smith clocked 149 miles per hour during his run as he took out the modified class over Nelson’s John Gourdie. John managed to clock a faster time on the airport runway with the speed gun reading 254 kilometres per hour.

John, who is also the president of the Nelson Drag Racing Association, was just pleased racing got underway with heavy rain bucketing down in Nelson at the same time the sun shone brightly above Motueka. But the weather wasn’t fine for most of the morning with one driver having to bring out his helicopter just to dry the tarmac. “We were very, very lucky to get that day in. When we got there at 7:30am it was drizzling,” says John.

John says it was “great to see” Bruce make the trip north, despite him having some engine troubles on his second run. Ross Wood ran 11.075 seconds to take out the super street class with Gordon Smith’s 11.540 seconds being the second best time in that class. Speedway’s Tigers roar into action

Ella Marwick, Sean Clementson and Emily Jensen scooped three of the major awards at the Waimea College sports prize giving last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

World Cup star claims top prize Phillip Rollo Emily Jensen was the big winner at the Waimea College sports prize giving with her key role for the Young Football Ferns deemed as the school’s top sporting achievement of 2012. The 17 year old central defender started every game for New Zealand at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup and capped off the tournament with a goal against Brazil. Other major winners were Ella Marwick, Sean Clementson and the Senior A netball team. Ella played four different codes in her final year at Waimea College and was captain of the Senior A netball team and the Senior A mixed touch rugby team. She also played basketball and rugby and went on to represent New Zealand at touch rugby. She was named the school’s top sportswoman. Sean was one of the Waimea College first XV’s brightest stars, picking up is 50th cap during the Press Cup Bowl-winning season. He was

also a member of the touch team and was named senior boys’ athletics champion. He was named the school’s top sportsman. The Waimea College Senior A netball team finished a close second in the local premier competition during a stellar season. Despite being pipped by Jacks OPD in the final, Waimea College were the only college team able to match it with the top division’s other sides and were deservingly named the school’s top team after winning the South Island Secondary School Netball Championship The four major categories were chosen by a panel of three people while all of the other award winners were selected by their coaches. Waimea College sports co-ordinator Daniel Hobbs says it was an impressive year for the school and that there were many highlights. He also wanted to thank the hundreds of volunteers involved behind the scenes. “Without these people preparing the food, managing teams and driving vans, sport just doesn’t work,” he says.

Daryl says the Panthers are the easiest team to plan for because of their overall strengths. "We know their guys are strong and we know their roles and how they race. It's one of the easier teams to race, although that doesn't mean we're going to beat them all of the time." Action began the Tahuna Holiday Park Speedway two weeks ago and this season will definitely be influenced by a heavy superstock feel. As well as a number of teams fixtures, Nelson will host the New Zealand Superstock Championship, which is widely regarded as the top individual speedway championship in the country. The Tigers will head to Wellington on November 17 to take on the Wildcats in the first race of the Carter Cup series before facing the Glen Eagles in Christchurch two weeks later for the McCall Trophy. The Wildcats will then make the trip across the Cook Straight for the final Carter Cup race on December 8.

The Challenge Cup will be up for grabs when the Nelson Tigers host the Palmerston North Panthers this weekend, but the locals will be competing for more than just superstock silverware. The manager of the Nelson Tigers, Daryl Peterson, says a pool of eight drivers are likely to take part in the four upcoming teams races, which means the five penned in for this Saturday could effectively be on trial for the NZ Teams Champs in February and the Teams Nationals in March. Jared Gray, Carey and Shane Harwood, Ian Clayworth and Blair Cunningham form an experienced quintet and Daryl says home track advantage should count for plenty. "We've had a pretty good success rate in the past against them in Nelson and we are the current holders of the annual cup," he says. "Blair and Shane are probably the youngest but I'd hate to think how many years of experience we have here."

Offroading champ defends title Darrin Thomason was crowned national offroading champion in his class for the second year in a row. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Phillip Rollo Darrin Thomason can hold onto the title of national offroading champion for another 12 months after successfully defending the Mickey Thompson New Zealand offroading championship last month. Darrin says it was “awesome” and “real cool” to know he was a two-time New Zealand champion. “I didn’t think I would win. I was hoping to do well, which you always do,” he says. The format for the national competition began with three races in the South Island and three races in the North Island before coming together for the one-off final. Darrin was tied with the top North Island driver going into the finals. The win was only confirmed late in the 175km enduro when other contenders

Glenn Turner of Wellington and Jason Delahunty of Tauranga had to stop due to mechanical failures. The Richmond offroader has been involved in the sport since he was just a boy but began competing seriously in 2003. He says it can be an expensive sport. Although his truck cost around $15,000, there were others in the field running $120,000 machines. “But you’re always going to have those guys with mega dollars. But some of them only have $5000 machines that are still having fun and performing well,” says Darrin. His truck could reach speeds of 200 km/h during the enduro races, which is just shy of the top classes which can reach 230 km/h comfortably on gravel. His goal for 2013 is to win the Taupo 1000.

Thunder lose on the last lap Daile Eden The Accessman Tasman Thunder Team have come away from the West Coast empty handed, losing the O’Halloran Suspension Development Trophy to the Greymouth Grizzlies. The stockcar team had to overcome the odds early with the 84N car driven by Micheal Paynter getting rolled on turn three of the first lap, followed by 83N Justin Hearne taking a Greymouth car up the wall and nearly rolling himself. But with just one lap to go and 81N Cody Teece leading the pack, the Thunder were looking strong. Until Cody lost his wheel gate just seconds away from the final bend and got pulled in to the infield, which left Greymouth to take the win. The Thunder will return south in January.
