Incident free Guy Fawkes Phillip Rollo

It was a quiet end to Guy Fawkes with the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade saying they were not called to a single fireworks related incident. Guy Fawkes Day was officially held on Monday night but some late evening rain and tougher sale restrictions meant it was not as busy as previous years, according to Richmond Volunteer Fire Chief Ralph Lonsdale. Although he admits it has been in decline for a number of years. “From our

point of view it was very quiet. We haven’t had a call out so far anyway,” he said on Tuesday morning. “The weather helped, I know it was windy which isn’t good for us, but there was a shower of rain which helped.” There was some potential for problems after it was reported that someone was setting off fireworks near The Grampians on Saturday night, he says. Fireworks went on sale to the public on October 27 and were only allowed to be sold between that date and November 5.

After this date, fireworks sales are illegal. Ralph says most people celebrated Guy Fawkes on Saturday night. Ralph was fully supportive of public displays such as the Coca Cola Fireworks Night at the Nelson Ralph Speedway. Public displays Lonsdale. were held in some of the country’s larger centres. However, he did admit some families preference was to set

them off in the backyard. “I’m a guy that grew up with Guy Fawkes Day, having bonfires on the beach and sky rockets but I’m sure the fire service is pleased that the period of buying these things is very restricted. The fact you have to buy them in a bagged lot probably helps us a little too.” Ralph says some people will hold onto fireworks until New Year’s Eve but the main problems in the past can be dated back to when sky rockets were still legal over the counter. “Most modern fireworks do not go as high in the air.”

Popular poker run returns

Local motorcycle club Route 6 is hosting its annual poker run this month. The Richmond-based club hosted its first poker run last year which attracted 108 bikes with many husband and wife teams taking part. Route 6 club captain Richard Eddington says the ride is a great day out and a chance to meet some fellow motorbike lovers while taking in the region’s beauty. “Last year was a really good day and as long as the weather is nice we hope to have a few more bikes than last year,” he says. The run is being held on Saturday, November 17 with registration from 10am at Harrington’s Beer Café in Richmond (formerly Robbie’s Bar and Bistro) and will finish at the Sprig & Fern in Richmond with a barbeque for all participants. Cost is $10 per person. Richard says the prizes are “very, very good” and all proceeds will be donated to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust.
