Wakefield residents are backing a petition to start an express bus service between Wakefield, Brightwater and Nelson to cater
for the growing number of people commuting to work in Nelson. Nelson Sustainable Transport Strategy Group launched the petition last week and plan to present it to the Tasman district and Nelson city councils and New Zealand Transport Agency next
month. Nelsust has been promoting a wide range of transport options for Nelson and Tasman aimed at reducing the number of commuters using their cars on the region’s roads. And Wakefield resident Delwyn Wasley says the petition is gaining
a lot of traction in the township with hundreds of people signing up. The petition has been placed in the Wakefield Four Square, Chateau Rhubarbe, HQ Cafe in Brightwater and the Richmond and Nelson public libraries. “I was in the Four Square the
other day and saw the petition already had one and a half pages of signatures and it’s only been there a few days,” Delwyn says. “I talked to a man next to me in the queue about it and he said ‘I’ll

Queen St could unearth surprises Simon Bloomberg

The Tasman District Council’s new engineering services manager, Richard Kirby, is “highly impressed” with all the planning that has gone into the Queen St upgrade project but says everyone should still expect the unexpected when contractors dig up Richmond’s main street. The $11million upgrade, which started on Tuesday, is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent the flooding that devastated Richmond’s central business district in 2011 and 2013. Ageing water and wastewater pipes and telecommunications and power services will be also replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. Although Richard has been thrown in the deep-end, coming into his new job just weeks before the start of such a challenging project, he’s confident that council staff and contractors Hawkins have done all the groundwork.

“The way council and Richmond Unlimited have dealt with it has been amazing. We’ve been fully informed on what’s going on. We got flooded in the past so it has to be done and people need to keep supporting the shops throughout the project.”
“They’re doing a good job but it is still worrying. There’s just that uncertainty about the effect [the redevelopment] will have on the business.”
“My personal feeling is that it’s a good idea because Richmond is growing fast. If the disruption is managed well, it shouldn’t be a huge problem. I’d rather see the street upgraded to help Richmond become more of a destination.”
Andrew McGlashen, McGlashen Pharmacy. “We all know it’s got to be done and hopefully the planning works out. It would be no better doing it in five or 10 years, it just needs to be done properly now. People also need to keep supporting Queen St shops throughout the redevelopment.”

sign it’ so it’s getting a lot of support.” Both Delwyn and her husband drive their cars to Nelson to work and Delwyn says they’d “use a bus every day” if there was a good service. Nelsust is proposing an express bus service that runs from Wakefield, Brightwater and Richmond to Nelson City via Whakatu Dr during peak hours only. “I used to live in Auckland and always used the bus to get to work, and when we moved here we initially lived in Stoke and I used the bus as well. It’s such a stress-free way to travel and one bus on the road means 28 less cars.” Delwyn says Wakefield and Brightwater are “growing rapidly” and the demand for a commuter bus will only increase. People can also fill in the survey on line on the website surveymonkey.com/r/ X5HCZ26

supposed to have been turned off but was still live and also a live power cable that was two metres away from where it was on the plans. “We even dug up an old cesspit that we didn’t know about and had probably been there since the days when horse and carts used the street. Things like that are always going to happen so we need to make sure we deal with them quickly - we don’t want a water fountain in the middle of Queen Street.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says the project is “obviously going to be very disruptive” and council’s focus has been to minimise those disruptions. The loss of car parking outside retailers and businesses during the construction stage is one of

Richard says they are all fully aware of the impact of the project on retailers and businesses on Queen St and have done everything possible to ensure that the disruption will be minimised. “When I arrived here, I thought I’d been thrown a bit of a hospital pass with the Queen St upgrade about to start,” Richard says. “But I’ve been very impressed with all the work our staff have done to make sure the project goes smoothly. “They have done the planning and worked closely with all the businesses right from the start. They’ve also made sure there will always be someone on the ground to help resolve any issues that come up.” However, Richard warns that there will almost certainly be some surprises once the contractors start excavating the ground. There is an extensive network of old pipes and cables running underneath Queen St and he says some of these may not be “where they are supposed to be” on the plans. “I was involved in the redevelopment of the main street in Feilding when I worked up there and, once we started digging up the road, there were always things we didn’t know about. We hit an old water pipe that had been replaced and was

Ashleigh goes back to Henley Simon Bloomberg One of the biggest challenges new teacher Ashleigh Laing faced when she started at Henley School on Tuesday was remembering to call her workmates by their first names. That may seem straightforward enough but for Ashleigh it meant changing the way she thinks. The 22-year-old spent six years as a pupil at Henley and for her, three of her former teachers and, now, new colleagues, Cade Armstrong, Jo Bowen and Natalie Doty, will always be Mr A, Mrs Bowen and Mrs Doty. “Jo Bowen was the first teacher I had at Henley in 2000 and then I had Natalie Doty in 2001 and Cade Armstrong in 2003, and they are all still here,” Ashleigh says. “I had to mentally prepare myself to call them by their first names when I came here - it wasn’t easy.” And it was also Jo, Natalie and Cade who played a big role in Ashleigh taking a up a career in teaching. After Henley, Ashleigh attended Waimea Intermediate and Waimea College and then took a gap year before completing her teaching qualifications at NMIT and then Otago University College of Education. “I always wanted to be a teacher and I really wanted to teach at Henley because it’s such a good
New Henley School teacher Ashleigh Laing, middle, with two of her former teachers Natalie Doty and Cade Armstrong. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. school. I had very good teachers here like Jo, Cade and Natalie and that made it such a good experience for me.” So when Ashleigh started looking around for jobs, she made sure she paid Henley principal John Armstrong a visit and then later applied for a position at the school.
“I came back for a holiday midway through the year and went around a lot of the primary schools in Nelson including Henley and said I was looking for a job. I applied for one at Henley and when John called me and said ‘we’d like to offer you the job’ I was speechless, I was over the moon.”
Ashleigh will be teaching a year two class in Room 19, just around the corner from her first classroom in Room 16 and Cade says it’s great to have her back. “I remember her quite well, even though she was very quiet. She was a very good reader and I’m sure she be a very good teacher,” he says.
However, Cade admits teaching alongside Ashleigh has a downside because it is another reminder that he has been around a long time. “I’ve had a beer in a pub with some of my former pupils and I’ve taught the children of some of my former pupils and now this - it could be a bit depressing really.” John says Ashleigh joins Joe Kirker and Emily Cahill as one of three new teachers at the school. Henley has a starting roll of 500 and needed one additional class this year to handle the slight increase in numbers. Although numbers are up, John says the school zoning system is working well for Henley, and neighbouring schools Richmond and Stoke, making it easier for them all to plan for the year. “The zoning is very logical and works well because we have three very good schools. I’d be happy for my kids to go to anyone of those schools.” Richmond School has two new teachers, Kate Stiven and Liane Ainley, who have already had teaching experience at the school. Kate was a trainee at Richmond last year while Liane has been a relieving teacher and associate principal Donna Miles will be away on study leave for the first two terms and has been replaced by Glenna Armstrong.

Hesitant at first, Andrea Dismont-Trott did a fantastic job after being pulled up on stage by Canadian street performer Mighty Mike, during the Nelson Buskers Festival, on Trafalgar St on Saturday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Jessie Johnston Reporter
jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz It wasn’t just street performers from around the world who had people in stitches at the Nelson Buskers Festival over the weekend, a few locals got in on the act as well – even if they weren’t too keen. The festival sees performances not just on Nelson’s main street, which was held in conjunction with the Trafalgar St Market Day, but at Fairfield Park, Mapua Wharf and an adult-only cabaret at The Boathouse. This year’s acts included Alakazam ‘The Human Knot’ from Australia, Biggest Little Circus from New Zealand, Kamikaze Fireflies from the USA, Mat Ricardo from the UK and Mighty Mike from Canada. Audience participation always plays a big part in the Nelson Buskers Festival, from the rapturous applause given to the street performers through to the individual helpers who are dragged up with varying degrees of compliance. Andrea Dismont-Trott, of Hope, was one of the lucky, or unlucky, souls who found herself in the spotlight during Mighty Mike’s unusual strong man show. “I was just waving at my son who was by Mac’s Brew Bar,” says Andrea. “And my friend pushed my hand up higher, he set me up. [When I got pulled up] I was like, how did I get into this, I hate this stuff.” Andrea’s contribution to the show centred around a card trick and, after selecting a card and placing it back in the deck, Mike continued his show with the promise he would find her selection, even after tearing the deck in half. Just when the audience and Andrea thought the card had been forgotten and the show was at an end, Mike ripped off his shorts to reveal her card in the most unexpected finale. “He was a fantastic performer, great charisma and I didn’t know how he was going to find my card,” says Andrea. “I love communities that put on things for its citizens and this is just wonderful for people to be out with their families and friends on a sunny day in summer. It’s free and I love the whole donation aspect of it. My friend was saying that there’s something on every weekend for us to do, it’s just wonderful to live here.”

Hello Readers, Did you make the most of our two long weekends? .co.nz There were so many families on our cycle trails and the Spooners Rail tunnel was a very popular choice for .co.nz many of them. It was lovely to see everyone out and about, enjoying everything about our fantastic region. The children are back at school so take care on the roads, children will be excited and focused on seeing their friends again, sharing their holiday highlights and maybe not thinking about road safety. It is a time to be extra vigilant. There are a lot of exciting things happening in real estate. Marketing methods are changing fast and print media is no longer the most important advertising option. Buyers are conditioned to find their new property marketed on the web sites, they respond quickly and expect agents to do the same. It is now even more important that your agent is always available to receive e-mails, text messages or phone calls as buyers are expecting agents to respond very quickly. Those agents who are focused on always being available are the agents who are being recognized as the ones to work with. You are welcome to call me if you require any real estate information. Best Regards
Lydia
Burglary at the mall: A retailer in Richmond Mall was the victim of a burglary and vandalism on Tuesday morning. Phone Zone was broken into by two men, it is alleged. Mall management says it looked as if the men were checking out the Mall, so were hoping they wouldn’t be coming back for another hit on another retailer.

“Easy contoured vacant sections in close proximity to good schooling have been highly sought after, which is leading to an increase in land values. “However, with interest rates now past their historic lows and beginning to creep upwards as the cost of offshore funding increases, increased funding costs and uncertainty going forward may impact market confidence in the region, but as yet we have not seen any sign of a slow-down in the market.”

Tastes of Asia coming to Washbourn
NIGHT NOODLE MARKET: Nelson Multicultural Council's, from left, Jessica Diaz, Jenni Bancroft and Marine Minvielle are organising a night noodle market at Washbourn Gardens. The night noodle market is set to be held this weekend for the first time in Richmond. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Simon Bloomberg Night noodle markets have been proving hugely popular in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, and now one is going to be held in Washbourn Gardens in Richmond, this Saturday. The markets are a pop-up hawker-style market celebrating the tastes of Asia and have been held in Australia for the last 18 years. They were introduced to New Zealand cities last year and this Saturday, for the first time, one will be held in the region. The market is being organised by the Nelson Multicultural Council which started planning the event after discussing it with Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne. Member of the council's governance committee, Jessica Diaz, says Richard was "really enthusiastic" about the market which is aimed at "celebrating our unity and diversity". "I went to one in Christchurch and it was a really vibrant environment with wonderful food and all sorts of cultural performances," Jessica says. "We talked to Richard about it at a citizenship ceremony last year and got a very positive response, so we started organising things. "It will be a new type of event for the Nelson region so hopefully it will be well supported. Washbourn Gardens is a beautiful venue and we'll create an Asian-themed atmosphere with lanterns and decorations." Jessica says they will have a variety of stalls serving a range of Asian foods including Indian, Filipino and Indonesian, as well as Asian fusion food. The market is a fund-raiser for the council and Jessica says if it's successful they will look at holding it several times a year. The Night Noodle Market will be held at Washbourn Gardens this Saturday from 6pm to 11pm. Admission is free.

Festival organisers ready for convoy Simon Bloomberg A convoy of motor homes is expected to roll into Brightwater for this year’s Nelson Wine and Food Festival to be held at the Middle-Earth Vineyard next Sunday. The Rotary Club of Richmond fundraiser has always been a popular day out for foodies, wine and beer drinkers and families with around 3000 people attending the annual event. But this year organisers are preparing for an invasion of motor homes with hundreds of New Zealand Motor Home Association members already in the Nelson and Tasman region for two national rallies. Around 1200 people in 630 motor homes attended the Music in the Mountains Rally in Tapawera at Nelson Anniversary Weekend and many of those are staying in the region for the national motor home rally at the Richmond A & P Showgrounds from February 23-27. And Richmond Rotary Club members Pete Glue and Kevin Gear say they have had a flood of inquiries from the motor home owners about the wine and food festival. “I’ve already had about 50 calls from the motor home people so we could get quite a few of them.” Pete says. “We ran a bit of a campaign in the motor home magazine and we’ve been getting a great response through social media as well.” Pete says they have plans in place to cater for the motor home owners including creating a motor home-only parking area at the Middle-Earth Vineyard. The motor homes will also be able to stay in the grounds on Saturday and Sunday
Richmond Rotary’s Pete Glue, left, and Kevin Gear are hoping to attract classic car owners to the Nelson Wine and Food Festival. Photo: Simon Bloombergl night for $10 per night - there will be a pizza and a coffee cart stall situated in the motor home camp. “We don’t know how many we’ll get but we’ll find room for them if we get too many. We’ll put them in amongst the vineyards if we have to.” Kevin says they are also encouraging classic car owners to bring their pride and joys along to the festival to be part of a display inside the grounds. He says the Nelson and Blenheim Classic Mooring Society and Austin Seven enthusiasts will be supporting the display which will provide another attraction, “especially for the men” - classic car owners will be admitted on the day for pre-sale price of $15. Pete says the festival will feature plenty
of live entertainment and wine from 12 of the region’s wineries. There will also be five craft beers stalls and 23 food, coffee, ice-cream and craft stalls. The festival is Richmond Rotary’s big fund-raiser of the year with all proceeds going to the Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge, the Fifeshire Foundation, Nelson Coastguard, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, Brightwater Rural Fire Force, St John, Cycle NelsonTasman Trail Trust, Wanderers Sports Club and Brightwater School. The festival will be held at MiddleEarth Vineyard on Bryant Rd Brightwater from 11am to 5pm on Sunday February 19. For more information go to the website nwff.co.nz

A survey of the number of people using the Mapua Wharf over summer shows numbers were up about 15 per cent on last year, as thousands chose to spend time in the shops, cafes and enjoying the waterfront. The new figures come as the Tasman District Council carries out a public survey to find out people’s wishes for the wider Mapua waterfront area. Council surveyed cyclists and pedestrians entering and leaving the wharf on three days over the holiday period, with numbers ranging from 7985 on January 15 up to 10,224 people on January 2. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says numbers were up on last summer by 8 per cent, 15 per cent and 25 per cent on each of the three days surveyed. “It can be difficult making a direct comparison year on year be-
cause weather and other factors can make a big difference to visitor numbers on any given day, but such a clear increasing trend shows what a popular destination Mapua has become,” Richard says. “I’m really happy people are enjoying the results of the investment we have made in Shed 4 and the wider wharf area.” Richard says the council’s Mapua Waterfront Survey is open until February 13, and urged people to have a say. “We’ll use the survey results to help guide future decision making on the use of Council-owned land in the waterfront area. It will also give us a steer as to the amount and type of infrastructure that may be needed, and future funding needs.” People can fill in survey at tasTOthe SPEND man.govt.nz/feedback IN-STOREor * pick up a hard copy from the purple mailboxes located around Mapua.

Past winners, return your trophies! Jessie Johnston For the last five years, the Nelson Motor Show has attracted car enthusiasts in their thousands, concluding with a prize-giving that used to feature 40 different trophies. However, past recipients have not always been keen to return them, which is disappointing for organiser Steve Steele and the show’s future winners. “Originally there were 40 trophies for various categories. I just tried to make them different to what you’d find at any other show
in the country,” says Steve. “We slowly increased the number of trophies over the years, as more people came to the show and more varieties of vehicles have turned up. Some of these trophies are worth between $300 and $500 each, that’s with the model vehicle, the making of it and the engraving, nothing comes cheap, but I’ve made them to last.” Creating the trophies has also come out of Steve’s own pocket as the Nelson Motor Show is a nonprofit event. Once the costs of the show have been met, the proceeds
are handed over to Nelson West Rotary who use them to support charities in the community. “We start out with a zero bank balance and end with a zero bank balance. I just do it for the enjoyment and to get people together,” says Steve. Some of the trophies have gone altogether while Steve has pledges from others that they will be coming back, however, last year’s show saw only half the trophies returned. “I had phone numbers of those with trophies and I did leave messages but not everyone got back to us. I’m not push-
ing the blame, there could be an honest reason for that but if they could come back that would be really appreciated so we can pass them on to other winners.” The model car from atop one trophy was even found by Steve on Trademe. When it comes to judging the vehicles at the motor show, Steve hands over the responsibility to random car enthusiasts on the day. “It’s so we can get a variety of tastes and so everybody gets a fair chance of one being involved in the motor show and two, be-
ing winners of the motor show. So if someone drives a Ford, I’ll get them to judge a Holden, or I might get someone from the Moris Minor club to judge the hot rod section, that way everybody gets a fair go, and it works.” If anyone does have a Nelson Motor Show trophy from last year or previous years, Steve would greatly appreciate their return. People can drop them off to Mag and Turbo in Nelson, EnviroWaste in Tahunanui or the Engraving and Trophy Centre in Richmond.
Building or Renovating? Bring us your plans Working from Plans I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so walked in with my new house plans with wallpaper in mind. I was very happy with the customer service and range of products with selecting feature wallpaper for the house so it was an easy choice again to get ColourPlus to help me with drapes and blinds for the new build. The team at ColourPlus were knowledgeable and had some great advice using my floor-plans, colour charts and flooring choices to narrow down options, initially from off the plan, through to selecting samples to complement our colours and floorings and importantly fit in with our build budget, finally installing them to a fantastic finish to our new home.
Nelson Motor Show organiser Steve Steele encourages people to return their trophies so that new winners can be awarded on Sunday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Alcohol injuries equal two a day Kate Russell
TOP FIVE INJURIES
Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Almost 800 people arrived at Nelson Hospital in the 2015/16 fiscal year with an alcohol-related injury – more than two a day – with hospital staff revealing it could be more. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board acting chief executive Peter Bramley released the information to Nelson Weekly via an official information act request. It shows 788 presentations were coded as ‘alcohol a factor in injury = yes’. But Peter admits that number could be higher, saying that “clinical coding for alcohol-related injury and illness may be of variable consistency due to clinical caution to state conclusively without a blood alcohol testing.” Andrew Morgan, Emergency Medicine Specialist at Nelson Marlborough Health, says there are still more reasons why the numbers of incidents attributed to alcohol intoxication could be higher. “For instance, someone may have been intoxicated, fallen

Only a very small number of people are brought to ED because they are unconscious, or can’t stand or talk. In these cases it is usually best that they are taken

The official information act request also revealed the top five most common injuries or illnesses that saw people visit Nelson Hospital’s A&E department in the 2015-16 fiscal year. They were abdominal pain, chest pain (non cardiac), head injury (minor), viral disease and sprain of ankle. The single busiest 24 hour period for the department was August 23, 2015, when there were 113 presentations with 36 admissions and, on average, the busiest day of the week were Sundays.

The main players are the Tasman Council, the contractor (which is Hawkins) and Richmond Unlimited, the representative arm of local retailers. It’s all their jobs to minimise the effect of these upgrades on the public and the business community whilst still acknowledging we are in desperate need of them for our future. Obviously, parking is at a premium and at some stage the retailers will lose parking spaces. To free it up as much as possible the council and Richmond Unlimited have secured FREE full-time all day parking, 7am until 9pm, at the Richmond Showgrounds. All staff and users of full day parking are encouraged to use this facility to free up parking for purely retail in the inner town parks. It is hoped that the council will shortly change the limit in all of the parks to 2-3 hours only. This will be a refreshing move and will definitely open up space for customers. In the first instance it will help Leemings, Village Cycles, Roast House and Binn Inn, to name a few. So all staff please drive down to the showgrounds, look on the right for the big sign and use that all day park. This will be available from Monday 13 Feb (next Monday.) Any problems or queries please contact Hawkins community relations manager Chris Foreman on 0800 000 413, or for the retailers, Steve Page on 0275 449 448 or Belinda de Clercq on 027 221 1282. And please let’s make sure we show a little more patience over this time and make it work for our town. Just a quick note: the first works are not the full upgrade, it’s the replacement of the main water pipe which will be done pretty quickly and right up the main street. Finding your way to Village Cycles’ rear carpark is easy.

Prepare yourselves for the biggest and best Nelson Motor Show yet, thanks to a dedicated team of organisers, a passionate group of car owners from around the country and, of course, those who come to admire the impressive vehicles. Previous years have seen thousands of people come through the gates, taking the opportunity to get up close and personal with cars of all shapes and sizes, talk to owners about their restoration journeys and enjoy the great range of entertainment that the Nelson Motor Show has to offer. The icing on the cake of this festival of motor vehicles is all the fantastic prizes up for grabs. In fact, organiser Steve Steele says they will be giving away around $5000 in cash over the weekend, the largest single giveaway being $1000.
Nelson Motor Show organiser Steve Steele with Gareth Caldwell from Speights ale House, one of many generous supporters of the annual event However, you won’t win anything if you aren’t there. “Entrants and members of the public are all in with a winning chance. It doesn’t matter if you have a $500 car or a $500,000 vehicle,” says Steve. The show unofficially starts on Thursday, February 9, at Smugglers Bar and Café with a registration evening, which will see one lucky participant walk away with a great prize thanks to the Smugglers team. The evening will start at 5:30pm for anyone wishing to get in early and register for the motor show, which includes Friday's Mystery Tour, Saturday’s Rock n Roll night
and the public show, or simply come along for a catch up if you’ve already registered. Day one officially begins on Friday, February 10, with the Mystery Tour, a morning out exploring a local museum not seen by many, followed by a Show and Shine at The Stables Tavern and Restaurant in Sundial Square, from midday. Vehicles taking part will leave from Speights Ale House at 9:30am, returning at around 5:30pm for the Friday evening `Super Cruize'. All those who take part in the evening cruise will be entered into the draw for some generous prizes thanks to Gareth and the Speights Ale
House crew. The public show gets underway from 10am on Saturday, February 11, featuring cars from around the country. In previous years, the show has attracted around 400 vehicles and Steve is confident this year will be just as big. The kids are taken care of too with a range of activities on offer such as bouncy castles for all ages, a boxing ring, and car rides around the holiday park. While there are a number of competitions to enter for some great prizes, two of the shows feature competitions include the Lawn Mower Motor Challenge and the Exide Strongman competition. For all DIYers and hot rod enthusiasts, grab the junk you’ve been collecting for the past decade, get together with your kids, your wife or a few mates and let your imagination run wild, using a lawnmower motor only to build something that can be driven. To register for the competition, message the Nelson

The Nelson Vintage Car Club’s annual swap meet keeps getting bigger and better each year and is on again this February. Starting out as a fund-raising event to help get the group’s Lower Queen St club rooms up and running, it is now a muchanticipated gathering where car club members and members of the public can hunt down a bargain. The swap meet is also a great platform
for those looking to sell their items to a large audience. “If you compare it to a garage sale, you might get 30 people at a garage sale for the day, whereas we have a target this year of 2000 people through the gate, so the number of people to come and view and possibly buy site holders items is a lot higher,” says organiser, Kevin Mercer. To be held on Saturday, February 18, at the Nel-
son Speedway Association grounds, the swap meet is full of treasures, from plants and clothing to toys, books, homeware and antiques, there is certainly something for everyone. Although it’s predominantly second hand items for sale, brand new is more than welcome, and it’s not uncommon for people to bring along surplus stock to sell. If a clean out of your spare bedroom or garage
is on your to do list, it’s not too late to book a site at the swap meet and re-home those belongings. Kevin and Ruth Mercer are happy to take people’s enquiries and set them up with the necessary information, simply give them a call on 548 6338. “Last year we had 113 sites, which was a 50 per cent rise from the year before so we’re hoping that 2017 will see an even bigger event,” says

Gates will be open to the public from 8am with marshals on hand to help with the parking, which is free, with entry via the pit gate on Lansdowne Rd. As the event is a fund-raiser, helping keep the club up and running, a small entry fee of $2 per person is required to explore the sites. A selection of food and drink vendors will be present on the day, along with a display of Nelson Vintage Car Club members’ vehicles. Hopes are that the Nelson Vintage Car Club swap meet will one day match the great Winchester swap meet in South Canterbury. In its heyday, this event hosted around 340 sites and attracted thousands of people.

There are many experienced members in the club, some having been with the club for over 50 years, who are always willing to help and advise new members about restorations and maintenance. The
club is also part of a national network that can help people track down parts or satisfy any other requirements. Their monthly newsletter, Crank Case, is available online or in hard copy, along with the national club magazine, Beaded Wheels, which is posted free to all members every two months. This year, vehicles from 1987 are now eligible to take part in club events, including motorcycles, and the club is keen to hear from anyone interested in learning more about the benefits of being a member. Anyone interested in becoming part of the Nelson Vintage Car Club can contact them via email at nelson@ vcc.org.nz. In the meantime, mark February 18 on your calendar and make sure you head along to the Nelson Vintage Car Club swap meet, although please note that the swap meet has a strict no dog policy.

Two of the regions best swimmers will get national television exposure this weekend. Sam McKenzie and Piper Riley have been picked for the South Island Makos which will compete against three North Island teams at Auckland's National Aquatic Centre. The event will be shown live on Sky Sport. The two Waimea College pupils won't find out what disciplines and distances they'll race in until closer to the starting gun but it does give them an opportunity to compete in front of national selectors. Each of the four teams is 40-strong with one Australian swimmer included as a "wild card". Sam says it's New Zealand answer to American college swimming. There are 20 under 15 boys and
girls and 20 16 and over men and women. This action packed event will take place over 4 hours split into two sessions with the sessions being broken up by the Legends Relay, which will feature a number of past swimming greats. Both teens will contnue their build up for the National Agre Group Championships where a New Zealand team for the Youth Commonwealth Games will be named.
Tasman swimmer Piper Riley and Sam McKenzie will represent the region at the New Zealand Zonal Swim Championships in Auckland on Saturday.

The Golden Edge Bowls Nelson senior women’s bowls team had a successful day at Stoke on Saturday, beating Marlborough and retaining the Ann Burn Trophy. The result was spearheaded by unbeaten performances by singles player Kirsten Edwards, the pairs combination of Dianne Potts and Kristine Greaney and the Mary Orbell skipped triple of Rae Inglis and Helen Moseley Nelson regained the Ann Burn Trophy Marlborough held a narrow 13 game point to 10 game points after the morning round but Nelson came back strongly in the afternoon to win six of the eight games to race home comfortably in the
end with a 28 to 19 game point victory. The Nelson men were the defending titleholders for both the McKendry senior men and Masonic development men trophies played at the Blenheim Bowling Club. However, the senior men were comprehensively beaten by a very strong Marlborough team, although Nelson was not quite at full strength with the unavailability of world champion Shannon McIlroy and recent centre singles winner John Haddock. The development men narrowly retained the Masonic Trophy when they drew six games each but had a better Net Total of shots +18 to -18. The Nelson Development women also won.

Brett versus Shane for SI Super Stock title Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott Nelson speedway mainstays Brett Nicholls and Shane Harwood look set to battle it out for the Hanmer Holiday Homes South Island Super Stock Series title during the final round of the championship this weekend. Brett is leading the series but only by a few points from Shane, and having friends of the Milestone Homes Top of the South track could be the difference between victory and defeat. There is plenty of racing ahead for the Super stocks with the South Island title, Battle of the Stocks and Easter meetings all on the horizon. There are a few drivers keen to visit over the coming months as a result of the packed schedule. Modified mayhem returns to the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway this weekend. The V8 Winged Warriors haven’t visited for several seasons but have been keen to return to the Nelson club on the back of the recent successful New Zealand Championship meetings. The track is in peak form and
as they progress through to the adult grades. The Nelson Tigers bowed out of title contention at the Palmerston North teams Championships over the weekend, losing both their matches to Wellington Wildcats and Palmerston North Panthers. They were consigned to the consolation races where Jared Gray won the second heat. Trevor Lineham was not so fortunate, he was caught in an opening lap melee and was put up the wall snapping a safety fence post. They have a chance to get revenge when the Panthers travel to Nelson in March for the meeting that was abandoned due to the Kaikoura earthquake. Nelson’s Brett Nicholls will be the man to catch at the Hanmer Holiday Homes Superstock Series at the Milestone HomesTop of The South Speedway, on Saturday. Photo Tom Laney/Imagepress.co.nz. should offer the drivers plenty. Steve Thompson from Greymouth will be one to watch he has a habit of throwing the car into the corners. Steve was unlucky at the New Zealand Championship over on the West Coast a month ago but
has since won the South island title and will be the driver to catch. Brandon Parkinson will be another who likes to run the high line, while Dan Rae is just getting his new car sorted. The Youth Ministocks are on the road shortly and with meetings
in Christchurch, Ashburton and Greymouth, they get to learn new tracks and compete against different opposition. Some are crossing the strait to take on the North Island contingent who generally race in bigger fields, it will up-skill the Nelson drivers

Cameron ready for Coast to Coast Waimea College multisport athlete Cameron Jones hasn’t done the entire Kathmandu Coast to Coast race before but he knows exactly what to expect when he traverses the South Island in the iconic two-day event this weekend. Cameron, 16, got his first glimpse of the race last year when he was a member of the victorious Waimea College team that won the school’s section. He raced the 67km kayak stage for the Waimea team and has paddled Waimakariri River a total of seven times as well as completing the mountain running stage in training so he is totally familiar with the intricacies of the 243km journey he faces this weekend. “I’ve paddled the river with Richard Ussher (five-time Coast to Coast winner and race director) which was really helpful,” Cameron says. “He showed me

some of the lines to take and told me about pacing and paddling technique. “I’ve done the mountain run three times too and I ran it with Richard and Elina (Ussher) on Christmas morning which was good too. I got some new lines on the run - Richard is so experienced.” Because Cameron is essentially a mountainbiker, he has been riding in Tasman Wheelers road races to get experience in bunch riding. Cameron says the Wheelers rides have been perfect preparation for the first 55km cycle stage which typically involves riding in a big group. Cameron ‘s preparation for the Coast to Coast also included a solid hit-out when he won the St James Alpine Adventure near
Hanmer Springs on January 21. He completed 7km kayak on Lake Tennyson, 65km mountainbike on the St James trail and a 16km run around the St James Homestead, in a fast 5hr 21min 10sec. Cameron was in good company on the podium at the multi-sports festival with Commonwealth Games gold medalwinning mountainbiker Anton Cooper winning the bike race and world-class triathlete Andrea Hewitt winning the 20km trail run in a record 1hr 23min 43sec. “I was really happy with it,” Cameron says. “I was first out of the kayak and then went really hard on the mountainbike. “I was really stuffed after the ride and then found with my running legs so I was able to finish hard. It was the longest race I’ve ever done but the training must be working because I still had

plenty left in my legs at the finish.” Although the mountainbike stage was completely different to the road riding he will encounter in the Coast to Coast, Cameron says the length of the event and the run stage were an ideal lead-up to his main target for the season. The Coast to Coast has attracted a big contingent of athletes from Nelson-Tasman including last year’s women’s one day winner Elina Ussher. Graham Dawson, Graeme Sellers and Lachie Brownlie are also doing the one-day event. Phil Harrhy, Lisa Morrison, Rachel Stanyer and Callum Wilkie are lining up in the two-day race while
David Ayre and Naomi Whitehead are teaming up for the tandem two-day race along with Dan Busch who is teamed with Napier’s Bruce Richardson. Waimea College has entered the school’s section again with kayaker Maggie McLean, cyclist Daniel Reid and runner Maddie Mitchell defending the title the college won last year. Ben and Anna Bolitho, Rob Marshall, Matt Hamilton, Maria Voigt, Aimee Burnard and Florence van Dyke have entered the mountain run. The two-day race starts on Friday while the one-day event starts on Saturday.

Nelson women’s team downs RNZAF XI in T20 encounters Jacob Page The Nelson women’s cricket team emerged with two wins from as many matches against a Royal New Zealand Air Force XI in Blenheim. With a number of strong teenage women players coming through the Nelson ranks, the trip to Blenheim was seen as a way of growing the group which has proved to be more than competitive nationally. In the first of two Twenty20 fixtures, Nelson compiled a highly competitive 144 for four, thanks to an unbeaten 50 off 45 balls from opener Saffron Wilson and 21 from Harriet King and 19 from
Tayla Brown. In reply the RNZAF could only muster 71 for nine, as a flurry of late wickets stalled their run chase. Nelson captain Kate Stiven grabbed three wickets while Shakia Biggs earned two wickets. Captain Stiven turned provider with the bat in the second match, plundering 38 off 31 balls to help her team through to 128 for five. Maia Radloff was the chief destroyer for Nelson with the ball, taking four wickets for eight runs in her four overs. Estella Grant captured two wickets, with Saffron and the spin of Kate Gaging and Genevieve Bone also taking a wicket each.

The Lantern
Keeping the love alive Summer time is wedding season. Quite often part of an old letter written to a church, in what is now Greece, is read out. The letter all about how the couple getting married should care for one another. The letter really works for all kinds of relationships though, as well as marriage relationships. The letter describes a love that is all about caring so deeply for the other that one’s own rights are not paramount. That love is not some sappy, soppy feeling. Talking about love is tricky because our words are so limited and feelings come and go. So what is left when the chips are down? What happens when words don’t work and the feelings have gone? Behaviour is left. Actions speak louder than words. True love, in marriage and in life, is all about behaviour. It’s the choices we make. It’s honest communication — it does involve words, words like, “I’m sorry.” It involves questions like “What do you need? How can I help?” Words are important in marriage even given their limitedness. (I try to be at least as polite to my husband as I am to everyone else. Why speak more unkindly to those we love the most?) But much more than words, to love is to act, anything short of positive and definite action isn’t love at all. A marriage characterised by the kind of love the original letter writer talks about, is flexible and liberating. True love is not demanding — another version of the letter says it isn’t always “me first”.
True love doesn’t demand the constant presence of the other. It sets the other person free to become the best that they can. It encourages the development of talents, abilities, gifts, character and career. True love is delighted when the other person is growing and fulfilled. Genuine love always seeks the good of the other person before ones’ own good. It doesn’t just say “I love you”; it figures out what makes the other person feel loved and then does that thing. It chooses to act kindly, even when one is really annoyed with the other. Most of us know this already but it takes practice all the same. There is no expiry date on any marriage certificate. Living together in a committed relationship is good. Marriage goes way beyond that though. Marriage is not just a contract but a covenant, a sacred promise. On the wedding day, that promise is made — for as long as both partners live. Love within marriage truly need never die. It can’t die if both continually choose to love; to put the other ahead of their own wants. This is a big ask — but it is possible. The words and feelings do come back when committed acts of love are commonplace. This is love in action.
