Village owners won’t talk It appears an independent arbitrator will once again assess whether a proposed 120 per cent hike in lease payments for the towns most vulnerable residents will go ahead, after the owners of Waimea Village walked away from the bargaining table last week. Last year Michael and Carolyn Wright, owners of Waimea Village, tried to raise the monthly lease payment by 120 per cent. When the residents argued the increase, the Wrights took residents of the village to arbitration. The Wrights received a 54 per cent increase but are now trying to charge the residents $19,690 for having to visit the arbitrator last year. Another trip to the arbitrator this year, as the Wrights are demanding, would likely incur a similar charge for residents. Michael and Carolyn did not answer questions put
to them by Waimea Weekly via an email last week and would not return phone calls, but they sent a letter to leaseholders last week stating that “any negotiations with the [Waimea Village] Residents Committee have been compromised and that in the best interests of everyone concerned the 2012 levy proposal goes straight to an independent arbitrator”. This was after multiple copies of the proposed lease increase, handed out to resident’s committee members on the condition they keep it secret, were stuffed in the front door of the Waimea Weekly office. Waimea Weekly printed what was in the proposal but incorrectly reported that the lease payments would be $284 a week, that price is in fact per month, up from $80 per month residents were

Tapawera artist up for prestigious award Tapawera artist Emma Panting’s portrait of a St Arnaud school girl has been selected as a finalist for the New Zealand Portrait Gallery’s Adam Award. Emma, who runs the art program at Tapawera Area School, is currently in the process of creating an exhibition for portraits of people within the area. All of her portraits are painted at a scale larger than real life. Emma has entered the competition before, which is held bi-annually in Wellington. She has now made it through to the final round of judging, which will be held during an exhibition from February 22. She will also enter the People’s Choice Award. While the portrait was designed for her own collection, one of the conditions for the competition states that the winning portrait would become part of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery’s exhibition. The winning portrait would also tour the length of the country. Emma says the portrait, which is not allowed to be publicly viewed until after judging, is the largest she has ever done. “I always work bigger than life size but I wanted to show some sort of movement. I know she’s a young adolescent moving from childhood into teenage years and I wanted to show that change in her,” says Emma. “I like to show BRUSHING ASIDE THE COMPETITION: Emma Panting has been busy the emotions in people.” painting portraits for her own exhibition, one of them is up for the New Zea- Emma’s husband is the principal ® Stressless land Portrait Gallery’s Adam Award.
