First hunting experience a huge hit

FIRST HUNT: Logan Barnes, 7, Kees Barnes, 9, Hayden Barnes and Lucas Hall, 7, with the fellow stag they shot as part of the Travellers Rest pig and deer hunting competition organised by the Top of the South Pig Hunting Club over the long weekend. The competition saw 76 teams and over 200 hunters take to the district’s bush. The hunt has been run by the hunting club since 1994 and despite the damp weather everyone enjoyed themselves, say organisers. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

I’m very much against it. We don’t want Nelson’s obsolete infrastructure. I hope the commission decides against it.

I’m not for it; I’m a Tasman district supporter. I feel for Murchison and Takaka, they’re bound to be left out a bit if it goes through.

“It wouldn’t be a good idea because of the rural aspect. Tasman looks after farmers because Nelson isn’t equipped to do that.”

“I’m dead against it. I lived in the North Shore when they were forced to amalgamate 10 years ago and there were no savings – bureaucracy went mad.”

Deadly corner must be fixed, says neighbour

NEWS IN BRIEF • An Upper Moutere man has been charged with firearms offences following an Armed Offenders Squad call out on Sunday afternoon, say police. The incident started at around 10pm on Saturday night when two people visited a Rosedale Rd, Upper Moutere, address. A man at the address asked them to leave and then allegedly threatened them with a firearm, discharging the gun into the air. At that stage police were not called, however on Sunday the man’s neighbours reported receiving threatening phone calls from him and informed them of the events of the night before.

“It doesn’t make sense,” he says. Along with his neighbours, David is now putting together a petition with the hope council will be able to make improvements to the section of road. In fact, he couldn’t believe the Waimea Weekly hadn’t received a call about the intersection prior to his, especially in lieu of the recent death. He believes there is a huge difference between the “state of the art” River Rd and Waimea West Rd intersection, which is just down the road, and this one. The petition has been organised to try and get improvements on the intersection, even if it’s only to take out the hedge, which in David’s opinion, is preventing clear visibility. Stu says if the bend was to be opened up to improve visibility people would be more inclined to go faster. “If people need the visibility then they need to stop and look.” The intersection petition can be found at the Stoneridge Café on the Moutere Highway.

Fundraising project to help the local community The Rotary Club of Richmond were hard at work last week unloading yet another truck load of pea-straw. The straw arrived from Ewing’s Poultry last Tuesday and members of the local Rotary club turned up to unload the bundles. The pea-straw is now available for sale, and will be available so long as there is a demand.

The funds raised go back into the community, just like many other Rotary club initiatives. Ewing’s transport the straw from Christchurch and store it, Rotary then sell the bails to those who want them for $10 each. The straw is available from Ewing’s, which can be found on Main Rd Hope.

ROYAL VISIT: Henley Kindergarten’s Brooke McKay shows Queen Elizabeth, aka Trish Gargiulo, a card she made for her royal visit on Friday. Henley Kindergarten children had spent the last several weeks learning about the royal family and in line with Henley tradition, the Queen paid a visit to the kindergarten, just in time to celebrate her birthday. The visit provided a great opportunity for the children to put in to practice what they had been learning, which included songs, bowing and curtseying. The young people also had a lot of input into the Queen’s visit, with groups making the “royal” carpet and flags. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Last chance to win our front page It’s time to hurry, there’s just two days left to enter our competition to win the front page of theWaimea Weekly. At 5pm Friday entries will close and we will begin the process of selecting the top three. Readers will then be able to vote for what story they want to read on the front page of the region’s favourite, and only, local newspaper. So far more than 30 people have entered by going onto our Facebook page and writing “I want your front page”. We have also had several entries via email. The winner of the competition will get to play editor for a day and tell us what to put on our front page, getting their story to a massive 10,000 homes in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield, Murchison and Appleby. Waimea Weekly is the only locally owned newspaper in this region. Once all entries are collected we will randomly select a top ten and ask those for details on their story – this is to make sure all entries are legitimate. Once we have confirmed your story is for real we will again, randomly, select the top three which will appear in next week’s Waimea Weekly. Then the voting begins! So if you haven’t entered yet and would like to get some free exposure for your club, business, idea, friend or whatever, quick go to www.facebook. com/WaimeaWeekly, like our page and write: “I want your front page”. Easy. Or if you aren’t on Facebook you can enter by emailing “I want your front page” to editorial@ waimeaweekly.co.nz.

People can also donate directly into a new Westpac bank account set up for the fundraiser. Brendan says the other key focus is on making a day of the race with the boys keen to set up a mini car show. Already they have speedway cars, go-karts, a formula Ford, a Suzuki Swift and of course Fords and Holdens that will be on display during the day, but they would like to hear from anyone who has a car they would like to display during the day. The race starts at 9.30am on Saturday, 18 June. If wet it will be held on Sunday, 19 June. To donate or enquire about showing your car email nick@prokarts.co.nz or call Brendan on 021 887 871 or Tony on 027 544 1541.

Overcoming tortured childhood a ‘life changer’ Teresa Hattan

Neil Davis was a nervous wreck as a youngster. He hated talking on the phone, speaking in public or meeting new people. Quite often he literally froze when he had to do these things. Neil is a stutterer, and the Richmond resident, who is now 53, had no control over his impediment until the age of 16. Neil now hopes to give back to the community and help others with stutters to overcome their fears. Having a stutter was like having a cloud over his head, Neil says. “You felt as though you couldn’t contribute when you really wanted to and you were held back because of the blocking.” By the time he reached his teenage years, Neil had had enough and decided he would solve this “problem” himself by trying all sorts of natural remedies - all with no affect what so ever. Neil says he never went to a speech language therapist because he was so nervous about talking to strangers and he thought he could solve his stutter himself. By breathing out and speaking on the out flow of air Neil was able to relax his stomach and this made talking easier. “I used to practice in front of the mirror nearly every day.” This technique took Neil months and

months to get the hang of, but he then felt confident to get on with his life. With his stutter nearly under control Neil went to board with a family in Auckland where he met a man he says changed his life. This man would clean roofs for a living and would get his work by knocking on HELPING OUT: Richmond resident Neil Davis is a life-long stutdoors. Whenever

he felt a block coming Neil says he was then able to tackle it with the technique he had mastered. Now knowing he could do anything, Neil then decided to go into the fire service. This then progressed into a teaching career and he now works from home. “I have bad days when the blocking is a real problem, but by and large it doesn’t bother me.” Neil says he has always wanted to help other people with stutters and has recently got together with Hope local Susanna Law to start Speak Easy Nelson, a self-help support group for those who stutter. Neil says he was initially embarrassed that others would know he was a stutterer. “I really wanted to do something for other people because it is a big thing in people’s lives and to cope is a really tough thing. I know there are people out there who are really suffering, so I thought I’d put all that to one side and get into it.” Speak Easy meetings are held every second Tuesday evening. The group is currently looking for a hall or room to hold their meetings, so if you can help contact Neil. For more information about the group, get in touch with Neil by phone or text on 541-0727 or 027 352 6402 or email neild@ xtra.co.nz. Community awards set to recognise Tasman volunteers The once a year opportunity to celebrate and recognise local volunteers has arrived, with nominations now open for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The awards, which are run in conjunction with the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils, are open to all voluntary groups and organisations. Since the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards began in 2000 more than $55,000 has been given away to deserving voluntary groups and organisations. This year more than $6,500 is up for grabs. “Every year when I see the groups and

organisations who are nominated for the TrustPower Community Awards I am proud of the dedication and support that volunteers give to the Nelson Tasman region. “These groups deserve recognition for the work they do in our communities,” says Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne. Anyone can nominate a voluntary group for the awards – groups can even nominate themselves. Last year 116 nominations were received for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. TrustPower community relations manager Pip Tschudin says it is estimated that more than 1.2 million New Zealanders are

Just a thought One of the things that fascinates me is hearing the excuses people make for doing things. Often I read or hear that the reason a person does something is because of somebody or something else. Court rooms, for example, are filled with people who do really unwise things with horrible consequences and they always have an excuse for their actions. I think it is because of the choices they make. It all boils down to ‘Choices’. Earlier this year, I did a series on “Choices’ for our Church. It sprang from what I do every day. This came from reading

Snippet’s of history: the Whangamoa When the Maungatapu Track was acknowledged to be too steep for a practical road to Marlborough, interest returned to the old Maori track from Happy Valley, over the Whangamoa range to the Collins and Rai Valleys. James Mackay had explored this route as early as 1867, but with Government funding delays it was nine years before a bridle track was formed, and another nine before the route was finally opened as a Nelson to Blenheim coach road.

In 1885 the route caught the imagination of many Nelsonians who drove their horse-drawn vehicles over that new, narrow, precarious, winding road. Even three young men on penny-farthings tackled the mountain. One crashed and returned to Nelson carrying his bike. The other two made it to Blenheim in two days. Hyundai’s new i20 has gained the maximum fivestar safety rating during the latest round of testing by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The i20, one of Hyundai’s newest small cars, was tested under the organisation’s tougher new rating system. The updated range of safety tests are now more stringent and require vehicles to be equipped with the most advanced safety technologies available. Raising the benchmark for the small car class, the i20 five-door model scored exceptionally well in all four categories assessed – adult occupancy, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist – resulting in the highest possible overall rating. Notably the i20 attained 88 per cent in the adult occupant protection tests, including the new whiplash assessment, outscoring the Honda Jazz in this respect, as well as in the other three categories. The car’s active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners and six airbags – front, side and curtain – played a key role in achieving success in the tests for frontal, side barrier and car-to-pole impacts. Another small car, the Suzuki Alto, only achieved a three star rating. Equipped with high levels of standard safety

Advertorial equipment, the i20 scored an impressive six out of a maximum seven points in the safety assist category, receiving top marks for its seatbelt reminder and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). “The i20’s five-star rating is recognition of Hyundai Motor Company’s commitment to providing our customers with world class cars and the highest level of safety.” said Philip Eustace, Executive Director Hyundai Motors New Zealand. “It follows the success of the multi-award winning i30, which also achieved the maximum score, demonstrating that Hyundai is developing cars which bring excellence, value and safety to consumers. Hyundai was the first car maker in New Zealand to include the life saving benefits of electronic stability control as standard across our entire range and we are now seeing other companies follow our lead.” The Hyundai i20 has an extensive list of active and passive safety equipment as standard, including six airbags, active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stability Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Richmond scores huge win in Chatham Cup Phillip Rollo

Richmond Athletic has scored perhaps its biggest win in three decades, beating arch rivals Nelson Suburbs in a second round Chatham Cup game on Monday. It is the first time Richmond has made the third round of the Chatham Cup since 1979 and the first time Richmond, which plays in the local first division, has ever beaten the Suburbs Mainland side, which plays in a league for the top clubs in Canterbury and the top of the south. Playing at Saxton Field in front of a huge local crowd Suburbs were the first to score when Canterbury United and Nayland College star Gagame Feni fired in the first goal. But Richmond hit back right away thanks to a Ben Wright strike. The scores were locked at 1-1 at the half time break but Richmond striker Wes Olea broke the dead lock, cooly slotting the ball past Suburbs keeper Alex Coles. The win sparked huge celebrations from the Richmond players and supporters. The win is also the perfect sendoff for its captain Joe Green, fellow English import Jordon Yong and Matt Shaw. The three players were instrumental in the side’s historic victory and have been standouts in their currently unbeaten season. However, Joe and Jordan will cut short their spell with Richmond to take up contracts with Northern Premier League side King’s Lynn FC, a rival team to their hometown club Wisbech, while Matt is heading to England in the hope of securing a professional contract. Joe, who captains Richmond Athletic, says the win is the perfect sendoff. “We’re delighted for the result and pleased for everyone at the club. It’s been a long time coming,” he says. “We showed a great team spirit and in all honesty it could have gone either way.” Joe says it was a “tough decision” leaving halfway through the season. But the opportunity to coach in the semi-professional environment was too good to turn down. “I feel bad for going half way through the season. It’s like a job half

finished,” he says. Jordan and Matt will be leaving this week and Joe departs at the end of the month ready to start pre-season training in King’s Lynn. Jordan attracted interest from ASB Premiership clubs after his impressive debut year with Richmond Athletic. Though he didn’t agree on a national league contract, he proved he could make the standard when he scored for the Wellington Phoenix reserve side in an ASB Challenge game against Canterbury United. The fleet-footed left winger says he was “disappointed” that his football didn’t kick on to higher levels in New Zealand, but will look to make a name for himself in the nonleagues of English football, before a possible crack at ASB Premiership football in two years time. Jordan will study a course in personal training in order to widen his coaching experiences to other sports. After a year at King’s Lynn, Joe is interested in coaching women’s football at a professional level. He coached the Waimea College Girls first XI and says “they’re really keen to learn” and “there’s no egos.” He is also keen to return to New Zealand in the future. The pair of imports would like to say “a big thank you” to Richmond Athletic. “They have been fantastic. They’ve done so much for us. Stu Reid, the president, has been fantastic. The club has a real family feel to it and I can’t say enough good things about it. I’ve found New Zealand as a country is lovely, the people have been unbelievably nice.” Richmond Athletic will now play another Mainland Premier League side in the next round and is going to be “another great test” to prove they can meet the standard they are aiming for next season. Richmond Athletic have been quick to snap up a replacement though. Former Nelson Suburbs captain and club stalwart Matthew Elliott has arrived at the club. Other English imports, Ben Wright and Sam MasonSmith, will see out the season and Ben is likely to return to BIG JUMP: Richmond captain Joe Green in action the club next year. against Suburbs on Monday. 18 WEDNESDAY 8 June 2011

Waimea Old Boys 2011 Long weekend proves fruitful for Waimea: four from four Brent Stewart

A holiday weekend meant there were a few names missing from the Waimea Old Boys senior thirds squad, however, this along with the inclement weather couldn’t dampen the team’s spirits. The opposition, Tapawera, are known as a tough no-nonsense team who never give up and only need a sniff to get themselves into the game. With WOB seemingly taking 1015 minutes to warm up and get into the swing of things, ‘Tap’ were able to take a huge advantage early on in the first half in both the territory and possession stakes. In fact, the break against the run of play from first five Jay Wright was one of the few plays Waimea had displayed. He nudged through a well-weighed kick to see flying winger Lisette Paea race through and dot down under the posts, Jay then converted the try. Tapawera would have felt aggrieved, going to the break trailing by 7-0; they had done everything but score!

This is a huge ‘step up’ for the WOB side, which in previous weeks lacked the defensive stamina needed. After some half time words which absent captain Marc Hunter would have been proud of, WOB were able to get the ever-needed first blood in the form of a try to Jay Wright after impressive forward play only some 60 seconds after the whistle started the half. This impressive start gave WOB the confidence to strike straight back with another gutsy forward patch of play and ‘stand in’ number eight Mike Bates dotted down with only 44 minutes gone. The game then settled somewhat with Tap gaining some composure to halt the onslaught, in turn the Tap forwards muscled a string of plays together and where rewarded with a try, which remained unconverted. The last points of the day belonged to WOB, the backs proved their training pays off and a happy coaching staff watched as they moved the ball through the hands and again

HUNGER: Stacey Davis, of the Waimea Old Boys senior women’s side, takes down a Marist player on Saturday.

speedster Lisette Paea was the man on the end to take it over the try line. Jay Wright finished off his day with a challenging kick from out wide, but he slotted it neatly to finish with a 100% accuracy. All in all this certainly had the Tap boys all ‘tapped’ out by WOB. There now remains two questions in the minds of the division three team of the day. Will Marc Hunter be able to play his way back into the side? And Grunter who? Player of the day honours went to Mike Bates with his superb stand in number eight performance. WOB points where, Tries: Lisette Paea (2), Jay Wright and Mike Bates with Jay Wright converting all four tries. Next week WOB face Stoke Reds at Stoke. The Waimea Old Boys division one side performed well against Riwaka in trying conditions on Saturday. For the full eighty minutes the boys were able to keep their opposition score-less as well as notching up 28 points of their own. Coach Dion Mytton says the performance was a “good team effort” and it was the first time the team played OUT OF TOUCH: Waimea Old Boys division three player Ryan Huston as a team for the full eighty minutes. “Hopefully takes a Tapawera player out of the game on Saturday. they’ll be able to do it again this weekend.” Bench players on the day made an impact and the squad will now be working on their game plan - ensuring they can stick to it when the going gets tough. This weekend the division one side take on Huia, which will be a tough assignment. Try scorers were Ricky Hoata, Kaide Whiting, Phil Gibson and Trael Joass. Phil also had a good day with the boot, securing a 100% conversion rate.

In other results for WOB The Waimea Old Boys Senior B won against Takaka 18-17. The Waimea Old Boys Senior Women's side beat Marist 30-5.

This week...

The division one side take on Huia at Sports Park from 3pm, the division two side play Stoke at Jubilee Park from 2pm, the thirds also play Stoke but at Greenmeadows from 1.15pm and the women play Stoke at Ngawhatu from 1.15pm.

Murch pick up another win on home track

Murchison has continued its winning ways, beating Nelson in a tough match at home on Saturday, but it now faces the daunting task of taking on table toppers and defending champs Marist this weekend. Murchison coach Mike Huxford says his side was lucky to get away with the 26-20 win on Saturday but it might have provided a “wake up call” at the perfect time. “We have been on such a high so Saturday’s game against Nelson, who are bottom of the table, was a bit disappointing but it is a good time to have a fright like that. The guys were getting a bit cocky I think.” The win keeps the high-flying Murchison side in the top three of the Car Company division two ladder, behind Marist and Waimea Old Boys. Mike says this weekend’s home game against Marist will be a big test but they have some “tactics up our sleeve”. Murchison scored four tries last Saturday with Matt Brown, Jack Topping, Dave Gill and prop Bob Wilkins all dotting STOP ME IF YOU CAN: Murchison number eight Jack Topping surges towards the try line despite the ef- down, Bob’s in the dying seconds to secure the bonus point. forts of the Nelson defence in Murchison on Saturday. Local players selected in tournament team The Nelson Under 15 team performed admirably at the Marj Jendon Tournament held in Wellington over the three day weekend. The third place finish was the best result Nelson has had in the Under 15 Grade. During the first two days Nelson played five games and won four convincingly – defeating Wellington Gold 41 – 20, Wairarapa Development 50 – 13, Wellington Talent 50 – 13 and Kapi Mana 40 – 28. Kapi Mana were previously unbeaten and were level pegging until the final quarter when Nelson lifted the bar to hammer home a ten goal advantage to take the game. Nelson lost to Kapiti – going down 27 – 35. They lost the first half by eight however they finished strongly to draw the second half. On the third day of play Nelson met Wanganui, and on the previous performances were expected to win however the girls did not bring their “A” game to the courts and finished on the wrong side of the ledger 26 – 45. Nelson redeemed themselves in their final game when they met Wanganui once again and reversed the result to claim a 36 – 34 win. Coach, Tish Jamieson said her charges were brilliant – both on and off the court. The girls have developed into a great little unit. A number of combinations are already there, with six of the players in the Waimea College 10A team. Add Nelson College’s Ellie Bell and Courtney Robinson, Waimea 9A’s Hannah Davenhill and Makaila Powick and there is a fair amount of talent. Shooters Ellie and Shaun worked the circle well above their years and returned excellent shooting sta-

tistics. They were fed superbly by wing attack Lucy who was a pivotal link through court while providing direction. Thirteen year old defender, Hannah had an outstanding tournament – pulling in an astonishing 15 intercepts in the first two days while Courtney Robinson who is normally a shooter had some commendable performances in the unaccustomed position of goal defence. Shaun, Ellie and Lucy’s performances were noted by selectors and were named in the Tournament Team. After finishing pool play in fourth place the Under 17 team played top seed Wellington Gold and in a hard fought encounter, they came out on top 32 – 30 to win a berth in the final against Wellington Black. Although Nelson had previously lost to Wellington Black 23 – 33 in pool play, they lifted the bar to fight tooth and nail in a tight game that went goal for goal. A couple of unforced errors cost Nelson dearly in the closing minutes with the final score being 28 – 31. Rosa Edwards was a stand out at goal attack in the final, she found great space and shot 86%. Shooter Maddison Billens had a great tournament , returning excellent statistics while Emese Bismark and Ella Marwick worked hard through court to ensure their shooters had an abundance of quality ball. Goal keep, Paige Pointon rebounded strongly throughout while defender, Jordan Webby toiled throughout – she pulled in five intercepts in just one quarter! Ella and Paige got the nod from the selectors when they were named in the Tournament team.

Tasman District Council will be introducing an additional, larger kerbside rubbish bag from mid June 2011. Residents surveys have indicated that while smaller bags prove economical for smaller households, there is also demand for a larger option. The new yellow bags will hold 60 litres, one third larger than the existing 45 litre bags. The bags will be sold individually and in packs of four and will be sold at Council offices and the usual outlets across the District. Initially the bags will retail at Council offices at $1.80 each.
