Richmond police station ‘high risk’ The Richmond police station will continue to be closed “on an infrequent basis” until the security layout of the station’s front counter is improved. Police completed a review of the security of their front counters at stations throughout the country last year after staff expressed concerns about their personal safety. The review found that Richmond

was one of the stations that needed increased security and as a result the doors have been closed when no constabulary members or authorised officers are present. “It’s something that has always happened on an infrequent basis but it is happening a bit more now because we need to modify the front counter,” Nelson Bays Area Commander Mat Arnold-

A sign at the Richmond Police Station last week. Kelly says. “So unless there is a

constabulary member present at the station, it has to be shut up until we get those modifications completed. Mat says they are posting extra staff to Richmond to try and keep the station “open most of the time” until the security is upgraded. He says the station’s front counter only has “wires going across without a screen so it’s

deemed a high risk”. Mat isn’t certain when the security will be upgraded but says “there’s a crew going around the country fixing up all the counters and it’s on the list”. He says the front counters needed to be designed to ensure staff were safe without excessively compromising engagement with the public.

IHC woodworkers nail it at Menzshed Simon Bloomberg The excellent craftsmanship of a group of woodworkers with intellectual disabilities was recognised at Menzshed Waimea on Tuesday when the group held a prize-giving to mark the completion of their latest project. Menzshed Waimea has been running practical carpentry classes for IHC clients at the shed’s workshop at Richmond Park for the last four years. On Tuesday, Menzshed volunteers and IHC helpers from Waimea College and IDEA Services held a prize-giving for one of the two classes to acknowledge their achievements. Menzshed Waimea co-ordinator Alan Kissell says they take around 25 IHC clients in two classes every Tuesday and they have completed a number of projects, including making their own toolboxes. They have also helped the

Menzshed volunteers make hundreds of rat traps for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and Department of Conservation. “The morning group has been making a table lamp so we decided to have a prizegiving for them when they finished,” Alan says. “I’m quite impressed with some of the work - they have made a very nice job of it.” Alan says the group’s woodworking skills and general outlook have improved dramatically since they started coming along

to the Menzshed. He says the Menzshed volunteers also enjoy the Tuesday classes which are “one of the highlights of the week”. “We’ve been going for four years and the development of some of the guys has been amazing. They seem to love it - they wouldn’t miss it for the world. “Our volunteers enjoy it too. We have had quite a bit of fun together.” Volunteer Pat Norris says the key to the programme’s success is treating the IHC clients “like ordinary blokes”. “They really respond to

it,” Pat says. “We don’t have any airs and graces here and they enjoy that.” IHC client Bryce Haycock says he enjoys the classes because he’s allowed to “make things by myself ”. However, Bryce, who has been attending the classes for about three years, also admits he looks forward to the social side of the classes and the morning smokos. “I like to have fun with everyone here and getting the food at morning tea it’s really good.” The programme is sponsored by Bunnings Warehouse which supplies most of the materials.

Port's slipway to get $8m clean-up Nelson’s polluted Calwell Slipway is ranked fourth on the government’s list of contaminated sites, but that’s about to change. Last week, MP Nick Smith announced the government will be forking out $4.2 million, just over half of the bill for the remedial works required to clean-up the Port Nelson site. The slipway is highly contaminated by copper and tributyltin, commonly used in the boat-building industry, particularly in the shallower sections. “This historic contamination problem in the Nelson Haven is a blight

on our reputation as one of New Zealand’s cleanest and greenest regions,” says Nick. The Nelson City Council and Port Nelson joint project involves stabilising the sediments in cement to form mudcrete, so they are contained and cannot pollute the Haven. The work is expected to take eight months. Last week’s $4.2 million grant comes on top of $317,000 for previous grants to support the investigation and planning phases of the project. The total clean-up is expected to cost $8.3 million.

A Richmond family arrived home to find their house completely gutted by fire, early on Saturday morning. Just before 8am the home on Chisnall St went up in flames, with thick grey smoke visible across Richmond and Stoke. Fire units were alerted by neighbours who opened their curtains to see smoke billowing from the windows.

Alan Rolf, who lives in the house opposite, ran across the road in his pyjamas and knocked on the outside wall of the main bedrooms as another neighbour called 111. “Smoke was flowing out the windows, the smoke alarms were going off and I banged on the walls and windows. My heart was pounding for them, I was really worried

they were in there, especially when I saw one of the cars was still there. They’re a hard-working family, they’re up working at the market garden at sunrise and don’t come back until sunset so no one was home, it’s a blessing.” Fire crews told the Weekly that the fire appeared to have originated in the back half of the home.

School mates backing Liam’s Rio dream Andrew Board Liam Malone’s journey to qualify for Rio has benefited from some very supportive Kiwis. And his big moment inside the Olympic stadium won’t be any different, with around eight of his old school friends from Birchwood Primary School set to make the journey to Brazil to watch him compete in the Paralympics. Liam started his journey to Rio shortly after losing his mother to cancer. The double amputee says he was spending his days “on the piss and smoking too much weed”. It was a depression triggered by his mother’s death, but Liam says he knew to get out of it, he had to set himself a goal that would influence his day-to-day life. “I thought of setting up a business or climbing Mt Cook, but the Paralympics was something that, in short period of time, I could achieve a huge amount of personal growth, and day-to-day it would affect me because I would have to be healthy and be training. And it’s challenging, it had to be challenging.” The first thing Liam needed was a pair of “blades” which Paralympians run on. He launched a campaign to raise the $20,000 needed. New Zealanders donated $50,000. Liam says that was a “defining moment”. “If that didn’t happen I don’t know how viable it would have been. It was so humbling, in fact I shed a few tears the night that it ended, it was really generous.” That generosity has also kept Liam focussed, not wanting to let donors down. Three years on, Liam has fulfilled the first part of his goal and has qualified for the Rio Games.

Nelson’s Liam Malone relaxes at training at Saxton Field ahead of the Rio Paralympics in September. Photo: Andrew Board. Until recently he was ranked number one in the world for the 400 metres with a time of 48.28, but an American runner beat his time late last month. The world record is 45.07, held by Oscar Pistorius. Nevertheless, Liam will head to Rio with a realistic chance of Gold. It’s the only colour medal he is gunning for. “I’d be disappointed with anything other than gold, but in saying that it will be really hard. But I’d rather feel devastated for aiming for the top and not getting it than feel satisfied just

for being there.” Liam is squeezing in training amongst his university studies and is “excited” for the games. And when Liam does get to the Paralympics, his mates will be in the stands. Eight of his friends, most dating back to their time together at Birchwood Primary School in Stoke, have booked tickets to the games. Liam says it will be great having them on board. “I’ve known them for most of my life and we are definitely like family, so it’s great

they’ll be there.” Also in the stands will be his father Murray. And back home in Nelson Liam will have thousands of locals who donated towards his blades, cheering him on. “That’s the thing really, I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me out. Everyone who donated back then and has been supportive since. It’s been awesome.” Liam will compete in the 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre events at the Paralympics, which are being held in Rio de Janeiro from September 7 to 18.

‘Man-trap’ takes out cyclist Simon Bloomberg

Nelson police says the person who put a rope across the Tasman Great Taste Trail on Rabbit Island that injured a cyclist, effectively set a “man-trap” and could face a maximum of five years imprisonment. Well-known Nelson cyclist Chris Sharland was cruising along the trail adjacent to Ken Beck Dr on May 29 when the rope hit him

across the chest, bringing him to a sudden stop and sending him flying off his bike. Although Chris was stunned by the impact and suffered extensive bruising to both his arms, he was relieved that nobody else had been injured by the senseless act. “I wasn’t going full gas because I was just warming down from a race, so that was lucky. I was doing about 25kmh and it hit me across the chest and knocked me

backwards - I didn’t see it at all. “I’m quite tall so it’s just lucky it wasn’t a shorter rider or a young kid or they could have been hit in the throat or head. Someone could have been seriously injured. “I’ve been riding bike all my life and I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s a pretty rank thing for someone to do.” Nelson police senior sergeant Blair Hall says the person who

put the rope across the cycle trail had set a “man-trap” which was regarded as a serious crime. He says the law states that anyone who “sets or places, or causes to be set or placed, any trap or device that is likely to injure any person” is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years. Blair suspects the rope was set in place as a prank by children or young teenagers who had not

thought about the consequences of their actions. “We take this type of thing seriously, especially when it was placed across such a popular public cycleway,” Blair says. “It could have caused a serious injury so we’d like to hear from anyone who knows anything about it.” Blair says if anyone sees “something like this”, they need to remove the hazard and report it to police.

TASMANIAN CALLS RICHMOND BY MISTAKE: The Tasman District Council call centre gets around 6200 calls a month so it’s not surprising that some of them are a little unusual. But last month staff had a giggle about one call from a geographically-challenged Australian who phoned the Tasman District Council from his home in Tasmania asking for a building inspection the following day. HOUSE PRICES CONTINUE TO SOAR: The price of houses in the Tasman district increased by 3.6 per cent over the past three months and 7.0 per cent year on year, the latest QV figures released last week show. The average value of a house in Tasman is now $450,447. QV Nelson registered valuer Craig Russell says the demand from out-of-town investors is continuing to drive up home values in Nelson and Tasman. “We have seen some strong sales prices of late with some properties being sold in a short time period and often in a multi-offer situations”, he says. PRE-SCHOOL BALL: The Country Kids Preschool is holding its annual Winter Ball (R18) and this year’s theme is a 1980s Disco Pump up the Volume. Tickets are on sale at Country Kids Pre-school, the Tasman Store, Moutere Gold in Upper Moutere and at the Moutere Hills Community Centre. There will also be door sales. Tickets cost $25 or $40 for a double. LIBRARY SECURITY INCREASED: Security in the Richmond Public Library has been increased with additional security cameras installed following an increase in incidents in the district’s public libraries and service centres. The upgrade of cameras in the Richmond council office is expected to be completed in July. Police were called to a fight between two men in the Richmond library last July.

‘Young gums’ win business challenge

BP BUSINESS CHALLENGE: Sun Sensors executive team, from left, Sam Scott, Tom Lee, Jordan Boyd, Connor Coulter and Caleb Jones, display their concept at the BP Business Challenge at Waimea College last Friday. The challenge involved students from Waimea and Nelson College for Girls. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg A sugar-free, vegan chewing gum that provides three-quarters of a person’s daily iron requirement was the winning concept among a host of innovative ideas developed by young Nelson entrepreneurs at Waimea College last week. Forty year 10 and 11 students from Waimea College and Nelson College for Girls spent three days working for virtual companies to develop their products as part of the BP Business Challenge. The nationwide programme is aimed at developing the skills required in the real business world with students teaming up in companies to research, develop and market their products. After two days of brainstorming, the companies had to deliver a 10-minute presentation of their budget, marketing plan and production outline to judges on Friday. Waimea College’s Summer Pritchard, Ashleigh Sumner, Sean Sharp, Alex Bloomberg and Daniel Rogers won the challenge after their company, Team Veagum, developed a vegan supplementary gum trademarked I Chew. A UV sensitive strip that can be incorporated into sunscreen bottles to indicate how much sunscreen needs to be applied, a microemergency locator beacon that can be attached to clothing, light-weight impact resistant sportswear and a time-lock lunch box were some of the other products developed by the students’ companies. “It’s a great opportunity to get students working with others, both from different year groups and other schools,” teacher Yvonne Daly says. “Students learn how to solve problems, develop their communication skills and team-work they also learn how to manage themselves.” The students’ projects were judged by Anne Harvey of NMIT Young Enterprise, Sarah Holmes of Nelson Tasman Business Trust, Nikki Ryan of You Realty and Jeffrey Kohen of Now and Zen. Prizes were provided by Subway, Stefanos Pizza, NBS and McDonalds.

Book fair unearths hidden gems Waimea Weekly reporter Kate Russell joined thousands of other Nelsonians at the Founders Book Fair on the weekend and, like many others, was delighted with what she found.

– to have a good hunt myself. You see, I’ve been looking for a copy of a book that a close relative wrote for a while now, and it’s been tougher to find than I initially thought. The New Zealand Sea Anglers’ Guide was I went to the Founders Book Fair over the co-written by my late great-uncle John weekend for work. I was there to write an Moreland (aka, uncle Jock), and was just article for this newspaper, but thought I’d one of the many publications he released take the opportunity – like I do every year over his time working as the curator of fishes at the Dominion Museum in Wellington. I’m definitely no sea angler - in fact, I don’t even eat fish. So, why do I want a book written for the purpose of helping people to catch fish? Well, I want it for sentimental BREWERY KITCHEN & BAR reasons. I want to hand it down to my children and preserve my family history. And, he was just a great character who I had a lot of respect for. Limited spaces available, bookings essential To my delight, I found not one, through McCashin’s Brewery Kitchen and Bar, but four, copies of The New Zea660 Main Road, Stoke 03 547 0329 land Sea Anglers’ Guide on SunsUndaY 26th JUne 2016 - 6Pm day, priced at just $1 each. Since moving to Nelson six years ago, I have been a regular attendee and have certainly found plenty of ‘gems’ over those years. I’ve found many children’s books that have become solid favourites with my two kids, and recipe books that have produced many a delicious meal. I’ve picked up string-tied bundles of my old favourite magazines, and I’ve even found a few mint condition Led Zeppelin records to add to my vinyl collection.

These books have a history, with their own story to tell – whether it be dog-eared pages, recipe notes, or ‘Happy 4th Birthday Felix’ written in the inside cover of an Eric Carle book. And these books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, games and puzzles, which have been gathering dust in garages and attics all over Nelson and Tasman, are given a whole new lease of life, thanks to the book fair volunteers and the generous people who donate items – it couldn’t happen without them. The Founders Book Fair is open each day this week and closes on Sunday, June 12.

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re NMIT student Laura Reynolds is one of the students to receive a scholarship for her study. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Scholarship helps NMIT student make the cut Simon Bloomberg A scholarship from Nelson Pine Industries is helping Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology student Laura Reynolds trim a few dollars off her student loan, as she pursues her dream of becoming a hairdresser. Laura was one of 120 NMIT students who received scholarships, worth a total of $250,000, at ceremonies in Nelson and Blenheim last week. The scholarships were awarded to students in a range of programmes with Laura receiving $500 from Nelson Pine Industries to help her complete a Certificate in Advanced Professional Hairdressing. Laura started the two-year course last year and passed all her firstyear subjects with flying colours. The 21-year-old Nayland College graduate applied for the NMIT scholarship in April this year and was delighted when she found out she had been successful last week.

"It's $500 which doesn't sound like much, but when you are a student it's a really big help." Laura says she was interested in hairdressing as a career and so, after working in a supermarket for three years, decided to enrol in NMIT. "I always wanted to study but wasn't sure what I wanted to do so I decided to wait and work save some money first. I'm enjoying the course although there's a lot more theory than I thought because you are working with chemicals - there's a lot of science behind everything." Laura plans to complete her study this year before finishing her practical training in Nelson. The NMIT scholarships are sponsored by Constellation Brands, Nelson Pine Industries, King Salmon, Kaiapa (Uncle) Jack Kohe, Pene Ruruku, Toss Woollaston, Blenheim Lions, Garden Marlborough, Marlborough Zonta and Uncle George Martin.

Opinion: Don't let us down Jetstar

When Jetstar came, we rejoiced. As a region we practically begged the low-cost airline to start flying to Nelson. A quick search through previous copies of the Nelson Weekly and you will find articles stretching back to 2011 quoting locals frustrated with Air New Zealand’s virtual monopoly of airspace above Nelson and urging Jetstar to take up routes to the region. Six months ago they did and the results are mixed. Yes, Jetstar has undoubtedly helped make Nelson buzz. The

number of people in the region this summer and since has been noticeably higher than previous years, and tourism operators say they’ve noticed an increase to their bottom line. That is a huge success, not just for Jetstar but also for our region. But – and as a huge supporter of the airline coming here, this pains me to write – there have been some shocking blows to the airline’s image in Nelson after a series of what should have been minor incidents, dealt with ap-

Breakfast meeting raises $3000 for rescue helicopter While a cooked breakfast may delight the tastebuds, the Business Breakfast Club also delighted the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, donating over $3000 to the charity. After an internal reassessment, the networking Business Breakfast Club wanted to mix things up, making meetings a rarer event and using them to support local charities. Chairman Craig Peattie says the breakfast held at the Rutherford Hotel on June 26 was extremely successful. “Over 80 people were there and it was well supported, people are definitely wanting more of the same so we’ll hold our next one in August.” Among the auction items were two, one hour blocks of time donated by the region’s mayors, Rachel Reese and Richard Kempthorne. Craig says supporting the rescue helicopter makes it all worthwhile. “The importance of the rescue helicopter charity to the community is huge, they’re a vital service but they’re having to scrape for every cent they get, each mission costs $3500 and they’re doing over 470 missions a year, so it’s good to help.”

pallingly. The latest was recounted firsthand to me over the weekend. It included a local lady leaving her iPad on a flight from Nelson to Auckland. She was last off the flight so knew it couldn’t have been stolen. Calls, emails and more calls to Jetstar later, she was told the one person that had the key for lost and found was on

leave and there was nothing more that could be done. Most of the frustrating phone calls were answered in the Philippines. This went on for days. Finally, it was a Nelson-based Jetstar staffer who came to the rescue and organised the return of the iPad. You may be saying, so what? No big deal. She shouldn’t have left the iPad on the plane in the first place. And you’d be right. But this isn’t the only incident that has come to our attention over the

past few months. I won’t go into them here and I remain a fan of Jetstar. I flew with them as recently as last month and enjoyed it. I know things go wrong, but it’s in the fixing of them that counts and I’d urge Jetstar to remember that. I’m still an optimist. I’m still a fan of Jetstar. I just hope the rest of Nelson agrees with me, because more incidents like the one highlighted will only turn air travellers off the airline and back into the arms of Air New Zealand.

Fluoridation is money down the drain: Why is our pure water going out of the country to sell and we are paying for tainted water that we need to drink. I myself can not get my head around this aspect, of our water supply we only use one per cent for human consumption. The rest goes down the drain by toilets, showers, cleaning, watering our gardens, etc. That also means that 99 per cent of costs of the fluoridation plan goes down the drain. The latest plan of the government is to fluoridate the remaining parts of New Zealand. The costs of it being $200 million, meaning that $198 million goes down the drain. A lot of money that could be spent on educating parents who spoil their kids rotten with sugar and Powerade drinks. As the three big cities have had waterfluoridation for a while and there are still rotten teeth, it is clear that this new action is a big waste. Franceska Francina. Two of the region’s conservation trusts have banded together to bring kaka right to our doorstep. Natureland Wildlife Trust and the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formally signify a new partnership, aiming to breed, raise and release kaka and other native birds back into the region. General Manager of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust, Hudson Dodd, thinks the two organisations will ‘dovetail nicely’. “The Brook Sanctuary’s plans for a captive breeding program for kaka dovetail nicely with Natureland’s objectives. “Between the two sites we’ll be able to significantly contribute to the populations of iconic birds like the kaka, as well as reintroducing other species to various locations across the Top of the South.” Natureland Wildlife Trust will use newly-built aviaries to establish a kaka breeding

Osprey and The Outboard Shop make the ultimate marine partnership, now enjoying new premises within Stoke's Echodale Pl. The move took place at the start of May this year, offering the team a far better location than their previous St Vincent St workshop, a bigger yard and better access for customers dropping off and picking up their boats. Lloyd Elliott, owner and operator of Osprey, is now in his twenty-second year of business and while Osprey has become a popular and reputable boat brand, having built around 800 boats so far, there are still those out there unaware of the quality option available to them when they’re searching for the perfect marine vessel. "I went to one of the Blackcaps games when they played at Saxton Oval. I was sitting with some guys I went to school with who Dennis Ellmers from The Outboard Shop and Lloyd Elliott from Osprey Boats have been partners in business for around two years. live in Nelson, one of them had never heard of Osprey boats. He lives about half a kilometre away from where we're making them and the other didn't know they were made in Nelson," says Lloyd. Lloyd isn't just the owner and operator, he's also the founder

of Osprey boats, which are made and designed here in Nelson by local fabricators, ranging from four metres up to eight and a half metres. The Osprey team specialises in creating customised boats to meet people's specific requirements, including bait boards, rod holders, winches and seating. wind up disappointed with their purchase because it doesn't meet their expectations, buying from Osprey means purchasing straight from the factory, allowing people to track their boat's manufacture, take photos and consult with the team throughout the process. Lloyd says a lot of workplace satisfaction comes from "seeing people come in and get what they want. As soon as construction starts we have people coming in to take photos, even from Blenheim and Auckland with their kids and grandkids. That's the enjoyment side of it.”

Osprey doesn’t just cater to clients within New Zealand either, their name has travelled across the ditch to Australia and, with every boat built to commercial standards, Lloyd and the team are often manufacturing craft for clients such as Abel Tasman Water Taxis, for which two are currently being made, DOC, and soon the team will be creating their biggest boat yet, it’s destination – Milford, where it will be ferrying people from the end of the Milford track. As well as new boat builds, Osprey offers structural repairs and are more than happy to fit your wish list of extras onto your

existing boat. The team have also designed and created a new boat trailer, the majority of their boats now leaving the factory on what they have branded ELERT, (easy launch, easy retrieval trailer). By simply driving on to the trailer, the boat is centred and automatically latched on. When it comes launching, the boat is driven forward until the latch releases and off you go. Once the boat has progressed through the factory to the point of being fitted out, The Outboard Shop’s Dennis Ellmers steps in to install the electronics and the outboard. Dennis has vast

It's been 50 years since Barry Galbraith Senior formed Galbraith plasterers in 1965 and while the business successfully earned a reputation for quality workmanship, plastering literally thousands of homes and commercial buildings within the top of the south, Galbraith's has never stood still in its aim to provide a superior service. When Barry Galbraith junior and his wife Nicky took over the business in 1999, what had once just been Galbraith plas-

terers soon grew to include expert painters, plasterers, brick and block layers, stone masons, as well as specialists in abrasive blasting, industrial coatings and powder coating, and most recently, the incorporation of Nelson Contracting into what is now known as the Galbraith Group. The expansion into these additional trade areas was due to a building boom at the time and saw the team go from around three to 25 within the space of four or five years. In

fact, at one stage Galbraith's was the biggest employer of brick and block layers in Nelson and has been involved in a number of small and large, private and commercial projects around the region. "My dad was a very good tradesman, he earned a good name in business and I’ve just tried to maintain that, I guess," says Barry. "You just don’t make promises you can’t keep." In 2003, Galbraith painting Limited started operating so that Galbraith's could offer a complete package, beginning with the plastering of a house right through

In 2006 Barry took over an abrasive blasting, industrial coating and powder coating business, before the latest purchase of Nelson Contracting, the decision being made to keep the businesses original name which has become synonymous with quality, professional building services. Since taking over the reins of Galbraith plasterers from his father, Barry Galbraith Junior has built the success of his business group on a foundation of personal attention, a “sleevesrolled-up” attitude and a strong desire to provide excellent client service and complete satisfaction, along with the support of a skillful and reliable team that now numbers close to 40 across all four businesses. Karyn White has been practicing massage therapy for 15 years and is passionate about using her skills to help people gain or regain mobility throughout their whole body. The colder weather and shorter days seem to make it a little harder to maintain our mobility, motivation and sense of well-being. But winter also gives us the opportunity to take some time to nurture ourselves and have someone attend to those aching muscles, stiff back, heavy head or sore neck. Karyn at Happy Hands uses massage, Craniosacral Therapy and Visceral Manipulation to give you relief from those wintery symptoms and help you feel more comfortable in your movement. After a recent course in Sydney, Karyn has expanded her toolbox to include techniques that assist in spine and pelvis mobility. She is finding that these meld well with the therapies she already uses, enhancing their effectiveness in decreasing the tension throughout the body. Whoever you are; newborn or elderly, highly active or not so mobile, it is important to Karyn that you receive the care and attention that you deserve, and the treatment that is of most benefit to you in a cosy, relaxing and private clinic setting.

Wanderers fall just short Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers suffered a dramatic turnaround, losing to Galbraith Group Nelson 18-15 in Monday’s NPD Tasman Trophy club rugby final at Trafalgar Park. Unbeaten Wanderers went into the final as favourites after thumping Nelson 67-0 earlier in the season. However, Nelson produced a determined display to close down Wanderers in the first half and then

score a late try to secure an unlikely victory. Nelson led 3-0 after a strong first half before tries to Sebastian Cauqueous and Jesse Pitman gave Wanderers a 1511 lead going into the final quarter. However, Nelson had the last say when prop Dylan Turnbull charged over the line and Jackson Harvey converted to seal the win. The Car company Nelson Division one competition resumes

this Saturday when Wanderers play Kahurangi at Sports Park Motueka at 3pm and Waimea Old Boys plays Marist, at Jubilee Park, also at 3pm. Tasman Trophy final: Nelson 18 (Tima Faingaanuku, Dylan Turnbull tries, Jackson Harvey penalty, conversion, Andrew Goodman dropped goal) Wanderers 15 (Sebastian Cauqueous, Jesse Pitman tries, Pitman penalty, conversion).

Wayne and Kenny Stockdale of Armageddon Paintball are looking to put tournament paintball back in the limelight. Last Sunday six teams, each one made up of three players, from Christchurch, Blenheim and Nelson, competed against each other in a genre of paintball that is almost extinct, especially within the South Island. Tournament paintball has its

roots in America, established around the 1990s to be a televised form of paintball, due to the sports high speed and frenzied game play, but the idea never took off. When Wayne and Kenny, who used to own the paintball business in Appleby, took over Armageddon, they decided to pull the inflatable bunkers out of storage, patch them up and put them back on the pitch. "Tournament paintball was hanging around in New

Zealand about three years ago or so when I first started getting into it," says Kenny. "It was more in the Ashburton, Dunedin areas, then it completely died out, so this is kind of the beginning, South Island wise, of it starting to come back, we hope so anyway." Being inflatable bunkers, unlike the popular solid barriers including tyres and buildings, the pitch can be set up in a number of different ways with the bunkers giving players an advantage when it comes to seeking cover. Players also dress differently, more similar

to motocross, with smaller, electric guns that fire a lot, very fast, although the paintball size and velocity remains the same. Not everyone taking part on the day had previous experience with tournament paintball, and while the high-speed, full-on game may not be everyone's cup of tea, "we'll take any paintball genre because it's our sport and our passion," says Wayne. "This is just one aspect that we're trying to develop because it's not happening [around the country]." The format for Sundays tournament was simple, starting at opposite ends of the field, players

tried to eliminate the opposing team, when they achieved a clear field a flag in the centre of the pitch would be taken to the opposing end. "It's the adrenalin, when you come off the field your hands are shaking," say Nelson team, Outlaw. "And it's just that fast pace, it's different playing out here where it's so much more open and you've got to have your wits about you. It's fine running round in the bush and shooting lots of paint, but when you come out here it's a totally different ball game with more tactics involved."

Since their last business update Intensive Carpet Clean has gone from strength to strength. Owners Tom and Lorna Gower have been working hard throughout the Nelson/Tasman region to ensure their ever growing list of residential and commercial customers receive a top quality, personalised service. Utilising the same high powered petrol operated van mounted cleaning machine as many of the national firms, coupled with their 12 years’ industry experience, this 100 per cent locally owned and operated business is able to ensure the highest standards whilst being more affordable and flexible than many of their competitors. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a flood in your home, be aware that your insurance company will allow you to choose your own service provider, you don’t need to use their national contractors. Tom and Lorna have invested heavily in high quality flood restoration equipment to ensure an efficient clean-up, but it’s important to call them promptly to prevent avoidable damage. Tom specialises in advanced stain removal and is able to remove many tough and stubborn problems such as cordials and other colour dyes. UV lights, moisture meters metres and other specialised equipment also help Tom to properly treat and eliminate pet urine problems including nasty odours. Intensive carpet clean offers more than carpet and upholstery cleaning, they also provide fabric protection to upholstery and carpets to help protect your investment from spills, dirt and UV damage. Nick's 10 under par equals club record Andrew Board

At nine under par and standing near the edge of the green on his last hole of the day, Nelson Golf Club professional Nick Loach thought he’d blown his recordequalling round. “I went for the hole and chipped it too hard, it went about 8 feet past the hole and I thought I’d stuffed it.” It left Nick, 22, with a tough birdie putt downhill to tie the course record at the club, a ten under 61, set by Sean Riordan, a fellow pro, who now plays on the Asian Development Tour. Nick steadied himself, tried not

to think about the enormity of his putt, and stroked the ball into the hole. His reaction? “Relief ”. “I really thought I’d blown it with my chip and I was just so relieved that I managed to sink the putt,” says Nick. After the putt came the high fives, the hugs and the beers. Nick says he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. “I was grinning from ear-to-ear and I couldn’t sleep that night thinking about it. It was the best round of my life.” In his second year as a trainee golf pro, Nick says he’s been spending plenty of time doing book work for his course, meaning he has spent less time on the greens. “I think that’s what made it such a shock, it’s not like I’ve been playing a lot, it just came out of the blue.” Nick started his golfing career as a 13 year old at Greenacres Golf Club in Richmond. He says the day of his recordequalling round he was “striping” the ball, but also had his share of luck. “The kicks were going my way and when I chipped in for an eagle on a par 5 I knew it was my day. Everything was going right.” That was until the final hole, the club’s 9th but Nick’s 18th that day after starting on the 10th hole

I had been aggressive all day and didn’t want to die wondering, so went for it. It was probably a bit silly but I was rapt to sink that

last putt.” Nick says it’s natural for golfers to be “greedy” and he did think of dropped shots elsewhere on the course. “But then I thought that I had so many go my way that I couldn’t really do that to myself. I played

really well and equalled the course record, I have to be happy with that.” As for his next challenge, Nick says he still has another 18 months of study and then he will reassess where his golfing future lies.

Anglican services were actually first held in Richmond in 1848 in a school house on the corner of Salisbury Road and Upper Queen Street. In 1854 the first Richmond Anglican church building was built on the corner of Wensley Road and Waverley Street. Eight years later the land was exchanged for the current site. The current church was consecrated for public worship in 1872.

Since that time many have been through its doors for services, meetings, baptisms, weddings and funerals. A Sunday school hall was built and extended. The initial hall built in 1891 was described as, “a plain but substantial structure…with sensible windows”. It had a new wing added in 1912.

Lunch on the Hill Tuesday 21 June, Tuesday 5 July Church on the Hill hall Come for a cuppa at 11.30 am or midday for the meal. Food and friendship for body, soul and spirit. Koha welcome.

The church itself was built onto in 1885. At this time the front area of the church, the chancel, and vestry, room for storing robes and other church service objects, was added. Stained glass windows were placed in the chancel. One was in memory of the Hon. J. W. Barnicoat and Mrs Barnicoat. The other was given in memory of the church architect, William Beatson, by his daughter. In 1983 the church was altered again. The crèche and playground were built adjacent to the church in 1997. The church community is currently looking to build “The Lantern” community centre building to replace the aging hall. There is a board outside the church which gives more information and photographs showing the church and its surrounds as they have changed through the years. Trying new ideas Sometimes it’s good to take a risk for something that is worthwhile. As a church, we have tried some projects that didn’t work as we had hoped. One project we tried, along with Wakefield and Brightwater Anglican churches, was a budget service. We thought there was a need in the community so after talking with some experts, we got a brilliant trainer up from Christchurch to work with some willing potential Budget Advisors. The training was excellent and the volunteers were keen. However after extensive and persistent advertising, very few enquiries were received. Bummer! For a while we tried to figure out what had gone wrong or what we could do differently. But in the end, we realised it was just one of those things. Maybe the timing was wrong? We are not sure why it didn’t work out.

Still we gave it our best shot and some really good things came out of it. Several people were trained as Budget Advisors and have gained great skills as a result. Those skills will be useful for them and for others in the future. Working together as churches has been helpful in getting to know each other better and has led to other ways of working more closely together. We have also learned some lessons about more careful research and better support for volunteers. We are pleased we tried. A big thank you to everyone who was part of the effort to set up this Budget Service. While we have pretty much closed down the service, Hope Community Church has established a fantastic Budget and Debt Management Service under the CAP (Christians Against Poverty) umbrella. If you’d like some help with your budgeting or to learn more about their courses on money management call free 0508 227 111. — Susan Gill, VIcar

“I really am so happy here.” When Bev found out she was able to bring her mini schnauzer Molly to her Summerset retirement village, she was thrilled. “Molly is very important to me, I wouldn’t have wanted to make the move without her.” After being at Summerset for only a few months, Bev was surprised at how quickly she settled into village life. She really likes the feeling that she’s secure and that help is always at hand should she need it. She says that living at Summerset has given her a great sense of relief, “Now I can relax.”

Slot car enthusiasts from around New Zealand will be testing their skill and endurance when they race in the annual Challenge Cup on the Nelson Slot Car Club’s new track at Hope this weekend. Around 50 racers will compete in the event which features qualifying on Friday night and two rounds of racing on Saturday. Racers will also line up in a two-hour endurance race on Sunday with the fastest cars expected to hit speeds of up to 50kmh on the new six-lane track. Race organiser Tony Cook says it will be the first event on the new Bays Joinery Raceway that was installed late last month. The track cost about $12,000 and has a computer-controlled scoreboard that displays the number of laps, lap times and the top and average speed for each car. Tony says the 1/32nd scale cars take around five seconds to complete a lap, hitting a top speed of 50kmh and a scale speed of closer to 400kmh. That means the cars will complete around 1200 laps of the new 19.5m track, or about 20km, during the two-hour endurance race on Sudnay. Although the cars are not the real thing, Tony says it’s not child’s play and takes a lot of skill simply to stay on the track. “It’s just like driving a car. There’s a lot of skill in it and you can have some big crashes if you don’t get it right.” The Challenge Cup will feature two rounds of six races, each lasting three minutes, with the winner being the driver who completes the most laps. Tony says the event has attracted slot car enthusiasts from Auckland to Dunedin with a strong Nelson contingent being led by defending champion Kerry Martin.

Trees to be felled on Mapua Drive

Richmond Unlimited – Annual General Meeting

A large group of tall pines and blue gum trees on Mapua Drive will be felled after an inspection identified them as being a safety risk. The felling, which includes trees lining both sides of Mapua Drive near the exit from State Highway 60, is expected to take three to four weeks and may lead to short traffic delays. Early-morning traffic should not be affected, but people travelling on that route during the day are advised to allow a little extra time, as vehicles will be stopped for short periods while a tree is being felled. After a pine fell on the road in April, other trees in the area were inspected and found to be under stress and at risk of falling. To ensure public safety we therefore have to remove the trees. Anyone with enquiries about the felling can contact the Council by calling Ph. 03 543 8400.

Water main and resurfacing works As part of their responsibility to maintain and improve state highways across the country, the NZ Transport Agency is upgrading the water main on Gladstone Road between Oxford Street and McGlashen Avenue and then resurfacing the road. Crews are working at night from 7.00 pm–6.00 am, starting Monday 9 May, for approximately six weeks (about 25 nights work). Crews will not be working every night and given the nature of the work they will not work if bad weather strikes. Work will occur in stages over the four weeks to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and the travelling public. If you have any questions or would like to speak to someone about this project please contact Andrew McAllister on 03 546 3680 or 027 448 6267. If you need to talk to someone while the work is happening, please contact Nick Hill, Ph. 027 2468 499.

Have a say on Moturoa/Rabbit Island proposals Consultation is now open on a draft reserve management plan to guide Moturoa/Rabbit Island for the next decade. Over the summer of 2015/2016, 660 individuals and groups let us know what they love about Moturoa/Rabbit, Rough and Bird islands, what they think should change and what should stay the same. That feedback was used to develop the Draft Moturoa/Rabbit Island Reserve Management Plan. That’s not the end of the process though – we still want to know if you think we’ve got it right. There are 12 key proposals we’re seeking specific feedback on, but you’re welcome to comment on any part of the draft plan. Have a say You can read the full draft plan and make a submission by visiting our website, tasman.govt.nz/feedback, or in hard copy at Council offices and libraries. Submissions close on Friday 8 July.

Tuesday 14 June 2016, 7.30 pm, St Johns Worship Centre. All welcome.

Richmond & Districts Information Centre With the busy tourist season still with us, and winter on the way, more volunteers are urgently required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road. Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large database. They should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the World. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or contact Sally Symonds, Ph. 03 542 3983 (rosters) for further details.

Wave pool closed for maintenance The wave pool at the Richmond Aquatic Centre has been emptied and is currently closed for maintenance. We’re expecting the wave pool to be back in action in mid-June. In the meantime, the Aquatic Centre’s other pools, the sauna, gym, café and other facilities are all still open seven days a week. More information on the pool’s opening hours and facilities can be found at clmnz.co.nz/Richmond.

Winter Dance Very popular annual dance event at the Richmond Town Hall. All styles of dancers welcome!! Saturday 11 June 7.30 pm. $4 per person entry plus a plate to share. For more information go to www.itson.co.nz
