Facebook helps find lost dog
Page 25
Jacob Chandler It’s not the first time Andy McKenna has rescued a stray dog, but it is the first time someone on the other side of the world helped find its owner. Andy, a Wakefield delivery driver, was doing his job on Sunday morning when he came across a stray dog on Bisley Ave in Nelson. He picked it up and, because the SPCA was closed on a Sunday, took to Facebook to find its owner. He posted a photo of the schnauzer, named Katie, and soon enough, a tourist in the UK had seen the photo and contacted the owner in Nelson to help reunite the two. Andy says when he first saw the dog, it was just sitting on the side of the road. “I was going up Bisley Ave and there was a dog standing on the side of the road.
Louise Hogg reunited with her schnauzer Katie. I called it over because I didn’t want it to get run over. It obviously didn’t have any road-sense and I couldn’t see any tags or collars on it.” Andy put the dog in his car and she lay on the back seat while Andy finished his paper run. About 15 minutes after the photo of the dog was posted, its owner Louise Hogg received a phone call from Sophie Gray, a friend who is travelling in the UK.

Wakefield couple Wendy and Peter Herrick have a lot in common, including both being bank managers, presidents of Rotary groups and keen gardeners. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Husband and wife are peas in a pod You won’t win any prizes for guessing the main topics of conversation at the Herrick household. That’s because Wakefield couple Peter and Wendy Herrick now have more in common than ever after they were elected as Mr and Mrs President of their respective rotary clubs late last month. Peter started his second term as president of the Rotary Club of Motueka on June 22 while at the same “changeover” ceremony Wendy was inducted as just the second women president of Richmond Rotary. “It’s the same for both of us,” Peter says. “We joined Rotary because it’s a

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz community service organisation and it’s a really good way of helping the community, both locally and internationally.” Peter, who joined Rotary when they were living in Motueka seven years ago, was previously president from 2011 to 2012. Wendy joined Richmond Rotary in 2011 after they had moved to Wakefield and is serving her first term as president. And when Peter and Wendy aren’t discussing Rotary business, chances
are they will be talking about banking or gardening. Peter is manager of the Richmond branch of ANZ and Wendy is the manager of Westpac in Richmond while they also share the same favourite past-time, “relaxing” in their big formal garden at home. “We have a one acre, formal garden which is a good way to unwind especially if you have a power tool in your hand,” Peter says. Peter says that although Rotary is a big commitment and “can take a bit of time” it is worthwhile because Rotary makes such a big contribution

“Yes, because there’s only one of them. Referees get so much grief, and it’s not fair that people on the sideline can yell abuse freely.”
“Probably could have gone on to referee it but done something about it like taken other actions to prevent the parents from ruining it for the kids.”
“Not really, because the kids have still got to have their sport. I’ve been to sports and seen it happen but it’s the kids’ day.”
“Probably not because it probably didn’t achieve much.”
Dog reunited after photo posted online FROM PAGE 1 “That’s the phenomenal thing,” says Louise. “For my friends to have picked it up on their Facebook page from the UK while on holiday. Obviously,
somebody local would have eventually seen her picture and recognised her, but these people were getting ready for bed.” Louise says she uses social media all time but never thought it would help her reunite with her dog.
Rotary presidents are husband and wife FROM PAGE 1 to the community. “The emails are as bad at home as they are at work sometimes but it’s worthwhile. We raised money for Vanuatu and $15,000 Rotary’s medical assistance scheme for children in the Pacific Islands. Rotary just built some new shelters at Rabbit Island and we did
a lot of work building the cycleway. We also provide a lot of funding for youth even though a lot of Rotary’s members are oldies.” Peter says there are five Rotary clubs in the Nelson-Tasman region and they are always looking for new members. Final piece of Saxton Field being developed
FEATURE LISTINGS WANTED NEW LISTINGS
Simon Bloomberg
The final piece of the puzzle in the Saxton Field development is being put into place with construction starting on a new sports ground that will include the region’s first dedicated rugby league field. Contractors have already started removing top soil from the five hectare site, located between Avery Field and Saxton Oval, so that the drainage system can be installed. The former Daelyn Orchard site is the final piece of land within the greater Saxton Field complex to be developed and, when completed, will feature open playing fields including a home ground for the Richmond Rabbits Rugby League Club.“We’ve spoken to the Richmond Rabbits about it and they are very excited,” Tasman District Council reserves officer Glen Thorn says. “We have developed other council grounds for other clubs like Jubilee Park for the rugby and cricket, so it’s nothing new.” Glen says the TDC-owned land is being developed as a part of a joint project with the Nelson City Council. Because the site is adjacent to the Saxton Velodrome, which is presently

There could also be shared clubrooms for the three sports - that makes more sense than having three separate clubrooms that aren’t fully utilised.” Glen says the construction of a new ablution block will be a relief for football teams and their supporters at Avery Field. “They’ve been using PortaLoos there and some of them got burned down, so this will be good news for them.” Glenn says the sports grounds

will be sown with grass in late August and open for use in time for next winter’s sports. The league ground will have relocatable floodlights for night-time training in winter that can be removed in summer. The ponded area to the north of the ground and vacant area to the west will be landscaped to create a family recreation area and attractive entranceway. The entrance to the new ground will run between the new entrance to Saxton Field off Main Rd Stoke and Champion Rd. “It’s going to transform the whole area from a wasteland of weeds that people were using for fly-dumping into a really nice sports ground. It’s going to look amazing.”

Dot Kettle and Georgia Richards with their children Baxtor, 10, Otto, 8, and Bruno, 6, give the intermediate slope a go at Rainbow Ski Area on Sunday. Photo: Jacob Chandler.
Hundreds took to the snow over the weekend as Rainbow Ski Area held its opening weekend celebrations. Saturday was jam-packed with snowball fights, tours, tobogganing, sledding and live music entertaining a crowd of hundreds, and while Sunday was quieter, there were still plenty of people on the slopes for some wintery fun. Rainbow Ski Area manager Jono Hay says the weekend ran without a hitch. “We’ve had an excellent opening weekend with
fresh snowfall on Friday morning. It set us up really well along with our man-made snow,” he says. The ski field operates a full snow school with group and private lessons, as well as a school holiday programme. Jono says it’s very important that all vehicles coming up carry chains because they have had to turn people away who have been unprepared. Rainbow offer a shuttle service for those unable to make it up in their own vehicle.
WHEN DOES YOUR NEW BIN GET COLLECTED? Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. The collection day is written on the sticker – this is the day for both rubbish and recycling collections. So, for example, if it says “Tue” then your collection day for weekly rubbish bags is Tuesday. It also means that your fortnightly recycling collection will be on a Tuesday. The number after your day indicates whether your recycling will be collected on Week 1 or Week 2. Week 2 collections started on 29 June, Week 1 collections started on 6 July.

Tahunanui man faces meth charges: Police executed an early morning search warrant at a Tahunanui address on Thursday, resulting in charges being made towards a 27 year old Nelson man. The man has been charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of instruments for the commission of an offence against the Misuse of Drugs Act.
House prices have risen only slightly as real estate agents report huge demand for homes in Nelson and Tasman. Mark Rumsey of First National says they’ve seen huge growth over the past 12 months, with his firm selling three times as many homes in the past fortnight, compared to what they did last year. “What we’re seeing is unpresented demand, especially in the $280,000$440,000 price range,” he says. The QV House Price Index for June shows Nelson residential property values rose by 0.7 per cent over the past three
Government boosts Great Taste Trail: Tasman Great Taste trail will receive $67,500 as one of six new projects the Government is investing in to maintain the quality of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. Nelson MP Nick Smith says he’s pleased the local cycle trail has been selected, as it is an asset to our community and in need of repair following storm damage. “I regularly use the Great Taste trail for recreation, fitness and family time, and rate it as one if the best cycle trails in country. My favourite section is from Richmond to Mapua through Rabbit Island and the unique ferry service across the Waimea Estuary,” he says. Funding for our regional Cycle Trail is in addition to the $3m announced last week for the Nelson Coastal Route. “Cycle Trails attract tourists, create jobs, and boost economic growth in the regions. Reports on Cycle Trails indicate more than 1200 jobs have been created.” Man dead after assault: A man involved in a serious assault at Franklyn Village on Saturday morning has died after being attacked by a 17 and 27 year old resident of the complex. Bruce Andrew Mortimer, 46, was transferred from Nelson Hospital to Wellington Hospital on Saturday in a critical condition with a head injuries, after being attacked. The two men have been charged with assault with intent to injure. Police said further charges are likely. The complex houses about 180 people and has around 60 security cameras installed. Franklyn Village owner Liz Harris told the New Zealand Herald, accommodation staff and residents were devastated by Mr Mortimer’s death. “This is a dreadful thing to happen for our community.” Forensic scientists are helping with a scene examination, along with around 20 police staff. QV Nelson Registered Valuer Richard Kolff says sales numbers and listings continue to fall around the region which is quite normal for this time of year as we hit the middle of winter. “Recent decreases in the Official Cash Rate and floating interest rates by some banks, coupled with an outlook of continued low interest rates, is also helping to fuel demand for homes in the low to medium level price brackets,” he says. Mark expects prices to rise sharply this spring. “An increase in demand usually brings an increase in price and we haven’t seen that yet. As we come into spring I think we’ll see multiple offers drive prices up.”

Church-folk unite for ‘love in action’ Local churches united last Saturday in an effort to help out around the community through a programme called Love in Action. Over 80 volunteers from seven Richmond and Hope churches took part in a number of projects from gardening at local schools and private residences to cookins with all the food going to St Vincent de Paul for distribution. Future’s Early Education were thrilled to be one of the benefactors of Love in Action. After being approached by or-

Richmond School, Wednesday, June 24: Richmond School is feeling proud after four successful shows of their production, The Kiwiana Caper. Principal Tim Brenton says the students did extremely well and gave a polished performance. The production also received a huge turnout from family and the community with both the evening performances in particular, packed out. DVD’s of the school’s production are now being organised and will be available from Richmond School.
ganisers, head teacher Jo Rowland drew up a proposal of what the pre-school wanted and needed done and last Saturday saw it all come together. Thanks to Love in Action, Future’s now has a brand new mud kitchen, created from Jo’s own design, a digging patch, freshly laid sand and new garden beds, plus other general maintenance including trimmed trees thanks to Mark Shepherd from Treehab. “The working bee provided us with the skills and support to make our ideas a reality,” says Jo.
“We are so thankful to the Love in Action group and everyone who made it happen and for their love, action and dedication to enhance the garden. Their work has made it a wonderful learning space for the children, families and educators and the process as a whole has strengthened our connections with the wider community, which is a win for everyone.” Love in action was a pilot programme and with the success of its first trial, organisers hope to repeat it at least once a year.

The Audiophile, Wednesday, July 1: Waimea Weekly would like to apologise to our good friend Daniel O’Connell from The Audiophile. Somehow we spelt his name wrong in the article ‘Music lovers turn back to vinyl’. Football referee quits, Wednesday, July 1: Last week Waimea Weekly reported how a local football referee quit the game after he was the victim of abuse on social media. On Saturday his former colleagues hit back, refusing to officiate any first division match. The action meant teams had to find their own people to referee half a game each. Referees say they will be back on the job this weekend.

Tasman District Council utility asset engineer David Stephenson with the new recycling bins. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Smooth start for new recycle bins
The Tasman district’s new recycling bin collection service has made a smooth start with the majority of householders getting things right although there still a few “teething problems” that need to be ironed out. The new service started on June 29 following the delivery of 17,150 new 240-litre recycling bins to homes along Tasman District Council’s recycling routes. Four new hi-tech trucks have been collecting the bins as well as rubbish bags and glass recycling bins and council utilities asset engineer David Stephenson says the only real issue is people not reading the instructions. David says the timing problem has been exacerbated by a domino effect on some streets where “an early riser” has put their bin out on the wrong day and the rest of the street has followed suit. Householders needed to check the sticker on their bin to see which day to put them out and could view the collection schedule on the council website tasman.govt.nz “One of the councillors said, in a meeting last week, that his wife told him ‘you could tell the houses where the men put the bins out because they didn’t read the instruc-
tions and got the wrong day’. I think he’d got it wrong too.” David says the only other major issue was the time of collection of bins from retailers on Queen St which started at 8.40am in the first week. “It makes sense to start after 9am so that retailers have time to put their bins out in the morning so we’ll adjust that. If they have to leave them out overnight that’s asking for trouble,” he says. David says they are able to respond to any issues and inquiries quickly because they can monitor the progress of the new collection service in real-time using a GPS tracking system and camera on-board the trucks. The system records the time each bin is collected and its contents and photographs any problem bins. Engineering services manager Peter Thomson says the new bins will make recycling cardboard and paper easier and as a result they are expecting a 20 per cent increase in recycling material. David says that council processes 50 tonnes of recycled material from Tasman homes each year with 15.4 tonnes coming from Richmond. A survey of 300 Richmond homes showed that only three did not use council’s recycling services.

Students get taste of boxing in Richmond
Andrew Board
It’s been a massive success in Victory, and Henley School principal John Armstrong is hoping to replicate that boxing popularity in Richmond. Victory Boxing Charitable Trust was founded three years ago and now has hundreds of children and teenagers through its gym each week, as well as several popular adult classes. John is one of those that attends the adult classes and he says he wanted to give Richmond kids a taste of it too. “They do such a good job in there. The structure is great and it’s really positive. We wanted to do something for the kids out this way as well. It gives them a bit of focus, fitness and learning team work. It’s great for them.” Parents Marc and Amiee Baker come to the school once a week during the lunch break and they – along with John – train the kids on how to throw a jab, skip, run and work on some combinations. “We don’t do any contact,” says John. “It’s all fitness and working on technique. If they want to do sparring they can go to Victory.” The programme started last school term and 12 boys took part. Next term, 14 have signed up and John says there is certainly enough demand for it. “Ultimately we’d like to invite kids from other schools in this area and when they progress to intermediate they can go to Victory if they like. We see ourselves as a feeder to them.” Funding for the boxing gloves, bags and skipping ropes came from the Tasman District Council’s community fund, via Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. John says each Tuesday lunchtime there are plenty of interested on-lookers at the school’s hall and they are not just other students. “I had staff asking me about it as well, so now we have six staff doing a fitness class once a week in the morning. It’s been great for the school.”
WEDNESDAY 8 July 2015 Henley School students Tye Wells, left, Victor Gahamadze and Noah Ivar with Henley principal John Armstrong in the school’s hall. The three boys are some of the 12 students who have taken part in the boxing programme at the school. Photo: Andrew Board.

Jetstar to Nelson: Nelson is by far the busiest airport on the list and serves around 800,000 passengers per year. The next busiest is only around 500,000. If they don’t choose Nelson then there is something wrong. Adrian Ferris. Of course they will choose Nelson. Best place in New Zealand to visit. Cj Power. Looking forward to it. Sheree Piesse. Kindergarten hours extended: It has been wonderful for our family. Our three girls have attended Nelson South Kindergarten and with the change in hours we have been able to work a little more knowing our children are in a safe, happy, learning environment. It is also a choice, with our youngest still doing three half days a week instead of full days. Robb Balloch Sandra Saywell. I think its a good idea my daughter goes to Nelson South kindy. Nikita Tepu-Takuira. I think it’s stupid as you have some parents who start work a lot earlier. You will soon have to make all workers around New Zealand work school hours as well. Kelly Brennan. Referee quits after online abuse: I saw this. Absolute disgrace. Dylan Kawana-Waugh. Disgusting! The club should be fined.

Sad, as it is hard enough to get people to ref games in any code, come on peeps sort it out! Hillary Tupe. Stoke Community Centre plans unveiled: Shame Tahunanui Community Centre couldn’t get a slice of that pie. Have we been forgotten? Cushla Vass. I just hope one sporting code doesn’t claim it and it is in fact a community centre. I think it will be a wonderful benchmark for Stoke to build on. Let’s hope a youth park is designed and goes ahead shortly after. Who will be managing the centre? Anyone know? Jo Munro. Good idea, but will it leak like most kiwi buildings? Will it be cold with very little heating, (like most kiwi buildings), will there be so few power points you can’t do anything without extension leads etc, will the floors be level? (You know the rest). Brian Gower. Won’t leak, look at the size of the soffits, plus the roof has reasonable pitch. Codes state insulation and double glazing and all that good stuff is compulsory now don’t they, surely it won’t be cold, just need to shut the bloody doors and windows, then crank up that big heat pump. Do we need reminding that public spaces are shared by children, too? That new mural of a couple in a mouth-clamped embrace doesn’t belong in a public space. A nightclub perhaps. How much more virtual graffiti is going to be plastered over the city buildings? Add to the tacky blue stripes and silly, cold, white seats in Bridge St, and we see areas of the city beginning to look degraded. Don’t Nelsonians have any say about these afflictions? They’re not classy at all... Morag Woode. Richmond water chlorine-free again: Yay!!! I haven’t been enjoying my cuppas with the yuck-tasting water! Verity Bartlett. Yes at least people get the taste when too much chlorine. I am more concerned about the virtually tasteless and odourless fluorine chemicals such as hydroflurosilisic acid and Fluoroacetate In our water supplies. Ray Foxley. Perfect day for a cruise Jessie Johnston
What better way to celebrate an American holiday than with an iconic symbol of American culture – gas-guzzling cars. From lean, mean Corvettes and Mustangs, to the colossal, tail-finned Plymouths, there was something for everyone at the Nelson Rod and Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise, last Saturday. The cruise began at the Suburban Club in Nelson and made its way to Riwaka and back, a distance of around 100 kilo-
metres. Not only was the day a chance for on lookers to admire a display of American automobile history, the Independence Day Cruise was also in support of a very good cause. Everyone who took part in the cruise paid an entry fee of $5 and by the end of the day the event managed to raise $500, which will all be going towards prostate cancer. There were 67 participants in the cruise, 64 from Nelson and a further three that were picked up in Motueka along the way.

St Paul's School Vinnies have created a special gift for vision impaired people in Nelson, making a tactile children's story book featuring words in Braille and large print. The Vinnies, which is the youth group of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, were inspired to create the book after a visit from Gill Clayton and Kaye Halkett, who spoke about their experiences with sight loss. Gill and Kaye showed the Vinnies examples of tactile books and the children decided to make their own to donate to the Blind Foundation. The Vinnies transformed the children's story Whirly the Helicopter, written by Ian Pillinger, into a tactile book featuring 3D illustrations with words in both Braille and large print. The Vinnies also buddied up with young people with disabilities and their caregivers to go canoeing and created musical instruments for Little Stars playgroup that caters for children with disabilities as part of the study. Vinnie Josephine Hills says the book is "much more than something people can read". "If you are blind and a Braille reader it is much better if you can touch the pictures as well. Just a thought... If you have children in your family, or have been to the mall in recent days, you will certainly know that it is the school holidays! As well, quite a number of people I know are away on holidays in New Zealand or overseas. In the depth of winter holidays (or even a wishful thought about them for most of us) can bring its own refreshment. Earlier in the year, I enjoyed a bit of a working holiday. It was an exchange with two priests from the north of England, They came here to Richmond and I went to look after two parishes near Manchester.
The people in the north of England were very welcoming and, at that time, much looking forward to spring. Indeed, they were looking out for snowFather David drop flowers which Gruschow, meant that spring was Our Lady of on its way. perhaps have to be more resourceful in finding suitable symbols. Holidays, that refreshment of days aside from normal routines, is just one example. If we reflect on our lives, I am sure we could find other signs of hope, optimism, satisfaction, joy. Even if life is tough for us at the moment, there is the hope of understanding and of a helping hand from kind family, friends, and even strangers. Christians see God working through such caring people – ourselves included - making tangible the new life that Christian faith is all about.

Garin’s Mahi Toi ‘best yet’
A sell-out audience enjoyed the best arts and entertainment created by Garin College students during Mahi Toi at the college’s annual Showcase Concert held at the Hope Community Church last week. Garin held its Te Wairoa o nga Mahi Toi arts festival late last month when students attended a range of artistic workshops and activities as part of the festival. Last Thursday and Friday, the very best of Mahi Toi was showcased at a public concert at the Hope Community Church and principal John Boyce says it was “the best he had seen in 15 years.” John says the event was “taken to the next level” under the guidance of Garin College arts coordinator Lindsey Furlong-Taylor and year 13 arts captains Jess Brooks and Nick Erasmuson who had been planning the concert for months. “The audience were amazed and spellbound by the varied and entertaining acts performed by the students,” he says. John also praised music teacher Kyle Profitt who worked with his team of technical minded students to present such a near to perfect show. A highlight of the concert was the Recyclable and Wearable art (RAW) competition with Ahusaka made by Caitlan Mahon, who modeled the item, and Laura Coulton, winning the open category. Flushed, made by Claudia Leonard (model), Hannah Stevenson and Kate Lightowlers won the junior category while Connie Sellers won the technical category.

New partner at Pitt & Moore
“What I’m seeing now amongst my clients is a determination to succeed and the resulting growth in financial success coming from that drive.” Geoff Caradus Partner, Pitt & Moore
www.pittandmoore.co.nz
Pitt & Moore Commercial lawyer Geoff Caradus has recently been promoted to partnership at the firm, having been an associate for the past four years. Head of the Commercial team, Rob Lane, says Geoff ’s promotion not only shows the firm respects the skills and dedication Geoff offers to his clients, but it’s also a reflection of the firm’s desire to support the region’s businesses. “The commercial environment is increasingly complex for businesses and we have been able to support a range of clients and help guide them through the raft of legal requirements. By making Geoff a partner in the firm, we are acknowledging his legal proficiency as well as the firm’s desire to serve our business community with top level practitioners,” says Rob. Geoff Caradus was born in Nelson and returned here with his family four years ago after working for leading law firms in London and before that in Wellington. His clients include some of the largest and most established organisations in the region, right through to owner-operator businesses. He works across a range of sectors with particular specialities in the areas of agribusiness, aquaculture, commercial property investment, maori business and construction. “I have seen in the past four years how businesses in the Top-of–the-South have weathered and grown from the impacts of the global financial crisis. What I’m seeing now amongst my clients is a determination to succeed and the resulting growth in financial success coming from that drive. It’s definitely a positive vibe,” says Geoff. He says that in an industry which relies increasingly on electronic forms of communication, he particularly enjoys the way in which business for most people in Nelson still remains a very personal thing. “In the UK I could work for months around the clock on some mega-deal and never meet who I was working for in person. Here, you get to have face-to-face discussion with business owners so you can really get a feel for what they actually want, work out solutions and see when you are making a difference. That’s the hugely rewarding part of my job.” Pitt & Moore is the largest long-standing law firm in Nelson – having started life in Trafalgar St nearly 150 years ago.The first clients were local businesses and the emphasis on supporting local business has stayed a strong focus since then. The firm has 7 Partners – Graham Allan, Rob Lane, Mike McMellon, Sian Holden, Anissa Bain, Marty Logan and Geoff Caradus.

MEN in BUSINESS Winter is normally a quieter time at Berrylands, but this year Pete Kristofski and his team have decided to open their popular fruit and vege stall so you have access to the freshest local fruit and vegetables all year round. Although the hours have reduced to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays instead of 7 days, it remains a popular destination for both loyal regular customers and new people who are delighted by the variety of products available. Pete grows as many of his own Pete Kristofski vegetables as is possible at this time of year, and also sources from other local growers. Obviously the traditional fresh berries aren’t available right now, but you can still buy frozen berry jam packs, and in this instance Pete has broken his own ‘buy local’ rule with a regular supply of Australian strawberries for when you need a wee taste of summer. While you are at Berrylands, be sure to try out a real fruit icecream or smoothie, or perhaps a lovely hot coffee. They stock a selection of flower and vegetable plants, beautiful fuschias, delicious Elovi olive oil, the freshest free range eggs and an extensive range of beautiful wooden giftware. Engineering geologist joins Davis Ogilvie
Engineering geologist, Andrew Smith is the latest recruit at Davis Ogilvie’s office in Nelson. The Nelson office has been keen to add the geotechnical and environmental engineering disciplines to its established structural engineering, civil engineering, surveying and planning services, and Andrew’s appointment fills the gap. Originally from the United Kingdom, Andrew is an experienced engineering geologist who has worked on a number of geotechnical and contaminated land projects in Nelson over the last five years, as well as many around the country and the world. “The opportunity to join Davis Ogilvie came at exactly the right time for me and I took the chance to join a developing team which is providing a robust one-stop-shop service to local residential and commercial developments. “Being part of a new structural, geotechnical and environmental team at DO and to become actively involved in the local market is a great challenge. The range of work is interesting and it’s a great learning environment.” Andrew’s inclusion in the team comes as Davis Ogilvie consolidates its Nelson base with the recent addition of both a contract Geotechnical Engineer and Structural Draughtsperson. Tony Lindbom, DO’s Nelson Director, says they are also fortunate to have the Nelson office’s previous Managing Director, Dave Ward, working as a consultant for the company. Davis Ogilvie’s surveying capabilities have also been enhanced with the recent purchase of a new top of the line GPS system. The firm’s one-stop-shop options for building and development are beginning to attract an increasing number of clients. A major project that Davis Ogilvie is currently working on is the Richmond West residential and light industrial development, where planning is progressing well. Other residential developments that Davis Ogilvie has been working on include multi-lot subdivisions in Atawhai, Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Kaiteriteri and Kaikoura. “We also have a large industrial development in Stoke that is to be expanded in the near future,” says Tony Lindbom.

From the start of construction in July last year, it’s taken a bit over nine months to get to the finished article which was opened on Monday, June 22. The design and build of the apartment block premises was down to Wellington based company, Arrow International, although project manager Robb Noble says that 90 per cent of the resources that delivered the project came out of Nelson. Construction of the building has taken some interesting turns however, thanks to the innovation of Arrow International and the local team of consultants and sub-contractors, it’s now open for business. “It’s obviously a five level building which is a fairly substantial structure for Nelson,” says Robb. “When we

Nelson newcomers invited to meet and greet Newcomers to Nelson are encouraged to head along to Rhythm and Brown this Wednesday to meet new people and socialise. The Nelson Newcomers Network hosts various events in the city, including the monthly get-together at the New St bar.
Coordinator Howard Fairbank says he was pleasantly surprised when he turned up to his first meeting. “There were a diverse range of people, both in age and backgrounds. People were there from their 20s to their 50s and from North America, Europe, Asia and from other parts of New
Zealand.” But the nights aren’t just for those from outside of the region, locals are also encouraged to come along for “diverse entertainment”. “This event is specifically designed for people who are keen on networking and socialising, although the first
question you’re often asked is ‘how long have you been in Nelson for?’” The drinks and nibbles are at Rhythm and Brown on Wednesday, July 8 from 7pm. For more information, contact Howard on 021 209 0486 or email howfair@bigpond. com

Well, the weather’s been a bit random, but it’s amazing how many folk can find time off nowadays if there is a good weather pattern during the week to head up to our winter fishery up around D’Urville Island area. Sometimes there is more boats up the top mid-week than on a fine weekend. With this added pressure on the fishery, it is important to consider catching and releasing these wonderful fish for our future stock. Lots of smaller kingfish have been caught recently, and the odd bigger models too. Snapper are also on the bite, and some good winter condition, means
Four rock 'n' roll dancers are heading south to showcase their swinging dance moves at the South Island Interclub Rock 'n' Roll challenge this weekend. Cindy Verry and Clara Jones will compete in the open section of the same-sex category, while Deb Corbett and Andrew Aldridge have entered the novice section. All four dancers are a part of the Sun City Rockers club, which is based at Club Waimea. Clara says it’s the first time all four of them have entered the competition, and the first time in several years that Nelson dancers have competed at the challenge. “Cindy and I both entered the club champs here in Nelson a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it so we thought about entering this. But none of the guys wanted to do it so we thought we’d dance together,” she says. The same-sex category does bring about some challenges. Clara says she had to learn a new role and they don’t do as many lifts and dips because she doesn’t have the strength to throw Cindy around. The duo hope to earn enough assessment points to qualify for nationals in Wellington this year. Beginner rock 'n' roll lessons start Tuesday, July 7 from 7pm at Club Waimea in Richmond. Cost is $30 for six lessons.

Waimea College 10A upset the college’s senior A team in their first Premier 2 game, 28-25 at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The 10A team has just gained promotion to Premier 2 and, with a reverse seeding draw, played their A team which had been relegated from Premier 1. But it was the 10A team that stepped up, leading for most of the game to record a sensational upset win.
The Senior A team broke the first centre pass and then scored off their own to be 2–0 up but that was the last they saw of the lead. The 10As displayed patience above their years and contained their eagerness to recover and score four unanswered goals to take the lead. The 10As went into the first break leading 7–6 on the back of a near perfect shooting display by Harriet Ogilvie and Bailee Tava. The A team introduced Georgia Davies at goal defence and her

presence was immediate, applying pressure to the shot, rebounding strongly and generally tightening the circle defence. However the 10As rose to the occasion with dynamic centre Jess Kelly toiling through court to create the turnover ball. Waimea 10A extended their lead to 15–12 at the end of the second quarter before the teams traded goals early in the third spell. However, the 10As found another gear to score five unanswered goals and push their lead out to seven before the A team closed to 17–23 with a quarter to go. The A team fought back early in the final quarter, contesting every pass to score six unanswered and draw level. Then the 10As scored four, two thanks to the crucial intercepts by diminutive goal keep Alex Bloomberg to secure the win. The other half of the formidable defensive duo, Maddi Springer, had a quieter game than her
exceptional Premier 1 debut for the Seniors in last week’s promotion-relegation game but she still worked the circle well and was always available through court. Demi Woolley shot well for the
Senior A team converting all but four goals to give her side an average of 83 per cent. Harriet and Bailee recorded a solid 67 per cent despite shooting from long range against taller defenders.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby Semi final time for Waimea SG
Simon Bloomberg
Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will be focusing on the set pieces as they prepare for this Saturday’s Car Company Nelson Bays division one rugby semifinal against Kahurangi at Jubilee Park. Waimea suffered an upset 28-26 loss to Nelson in their final round-robin game last weekend and assistant coach Mark Milne says their set pieces were a contributing factor. They will also be working on the finer detail of their game plan so that they can counter an attacking Kahurangi team. “We weren’t happy with our scrums and lineouts against Nelson,” Mark says. “They didn’t function as well as they can so we’ll be focusing on that this week.” However, Mark says they aren’t too concerned about suffering just their second loss this season leading into the semis. He conceded that Nelson played “bloody well” and the loss would help “sharpen the focus” of his players for Saturday’s match. “Nelson were up for it and played well. When you look at the players they had coming back, like Mitchell Scott and David Havili, they probably have the best backline in the competition - the Noel Barton Trophy also means a lot to them.” Mark expects the semi-final to be an entertaining game with Kahurangi playing a similar attacking style of rugby as Waimea. He identified midfielder Mike Wells as a key player for the Motueka-based team. Waimea Old Boys senior B team is playing Takaka in the division two semi-final in the curtainraiser at Jubilee Park and Mark hopes there will be plenty of home support for both teams. “I know it’s school holidays but we’d love as many supporters there as possible. We appreciate the support and it always makes a big difference for us.” Taylors Contracting Wanderers play Marist in the other division one semi-final at Brightwater. Wanderers senior B team plays the division two semi against Collingwood in the early game at Brightwater.

Dash for Cash helps SPORTBriefs fuel motocross champs
RUNNING: Waimea Harrier Club combines with Athletics Nelson this Saturday for the Dam Race, at the Maitai Dam starting at 2.30pm. Runners and walkers of all abilities are welcome.
Jacob Chandler The revving of engines echoed out of 88 Valley as around 150 motocross riders took to the Nelson Championships at MotoX Park over the weekend. Traditionally, the Nelson champs were held yearly, but the event was held off last year due to low organisation numbers. This year, a bout of new memberships drew racers from all over New Zealand. Motocross New Zealand steward Heath Botica says the Nelson event had a large amount of money up for grabs as cash prizes which helped to set the it apart from the rest of the country. "A lot of the guys have done quite well out of it a lot more that what they would have got had they competed in other parts of the country." Heath says the championships catered to junior and senior classes as well as a ladies race. Racers as young as ten could enter the competition. Reece Walker took out most of his races after stepping up to a senior level from a junior level racer. “He rode really, really well,” Heath says. Reece failed to take out the Dash for Cash race losing to Hayden Wilkinson who was on a bigger bike. The Dash for Cash puts racers head to head in pairs in a one-lap knockout with a $500 top prize. Heath says there were only a few minor incidents and he hopes the event has created a greater interest in the sport. “We had good spectator numbers, it’s a new lot of organisers who have taken it on and it was run really well. Once the word gets out about how much prize money was up for grabs, they might get a bit better supported."
MOUNTAINBIKING: Round five of the Nelson Mountainbike Club’s Mini Mountain Bike Series for riders aged five to 12 is being held at Nelson College this Sunday. Registration starts at 9.30am with racing from 10am. Entry is $2. The event will be followed by round five of the Nelson Tasman Cyclocross series. Registration from 11.30am with open grade starting at 12pm and the cyclocross grade from 1pm. RUGBY: Waimea College lost to competition leaders Christchurch Boys High School 58-6 in their UC Championship secondary schools rugby game in Christchurch on Saturday. Waimea trailed 20-6 at half time after Jayden Woolley kicked two penalties for the visitors. There is no game this weekend.

Love in Action
On Saturday 4th of July the USA celebrated independence. Richmond and Hope celebrated interdependence. Over 80 volunteers, mostly from several churches in our area and some from the wider community, worked together on different projects. We wanted to live out what we believe: God’s love is available to everyone and churches are not in competition with each other.
Together we did a lot of gardening – at Hope School, Futures Early Education, Salisbury School, St Andrew’s Family Home, some private gardens and the Christian Academy. At Futures we installed a Mud Kitchen! “It has been invaluable to have people with all kinds of skills to help us make our ideas happen,” enthused Jo Rowlands, from Futures. “Together we have created wonderful experiences for our children.”
We also held cook-ins at three different churches making soup and scones, beef casserole and stewed a ton of apples. The food all went to St Vincent de Paul for distribution. We had so much fun working together. Thank you so much - everyone worked hard; both on the day and earlier with some of the preparation. Thank you to those who provided materials and finances. Special thanks to the organising team and to Richard Kempthorne, Tony Greep, Colin Blomfield and Mark Shepherd for their support. Mark is from Treehab and did a great job of pruning. Mark can be contacted on 022 386 4562 for all aspects of tree work. — Susan Gill, Chairperson for Richmond Waimea Minister’s Association

Midwinter feast
Church on the Hill Services
On July 21 we are having a midwinter feast. Come and enjoy shepherd’s pie with peas and carrots, followed by chocolate cake with hot custard. Volunteers at Lunch on the Hill aim to offer generous hospitality just as we would in our own homes. We set the tables with care, bright table cloths, nice plates, flowers and napkins. We serve good coffee and tea before the lunch, and all the food is lovingly prepared by volunteers. If you can’t make the midwinter feast other lunches you can enjoy are; in the winter, soup - last time there was a choice between tomato and leek or corn and bacon chowder, with bread. Followed, of course, by dessert - an apple and feijoa crumble with cream. We love the chatter and the way people feel welcome. Why don’t you come along and see for yourself. Koha donation as you are able.

Roadside Spraying for Vegetation Control in Rural Areas and Registration of Non-Spray Areas
Are you planning a community art project?
‘No Spray’ Registration Option for Residents Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval, the Council's contractors will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs. Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure: • Road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible; and • Vegetation height will not exceed 300mm; and • Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation; and • At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. An application form for your property to be included on the no spray database is available on the Council’s website – www.tasman.govt.nz – search for ‘no spray’. Opus International Consultants administer a separate vegetation control programme for the state highway network on behalf of the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The Bylaw is now available for viewing during normal Council hours at the following Council offices: Richmond Main Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond Motueka Service Centre, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka Takaka Service Centre, 78 Commercial Street, Takaka Murchison Service Centre, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison And libraries: District Library, Queen Street, Richmond Motueka Library, Pah Street, Motueka Takaka Memorial Library, Commercial Street, Takaka The bylaw is also available on the Council’s website at: www.tasman.govt.nz
Tasman District Council Community Grants Applications are open for Tasman District Council’s Community Grants. The Council allocates funds to support and encourage community-led projects. Over the last year, $207,000 was invested in projects ranging from local facility upgrades to local history displays, emergency service equipment to pest control, and local art to ANZAC commemorations. To be considered applications must be for initiatives within Tasman and/or demonstrate the benefits to Tasman residents. Ideally, the funds applied for will be for a specific service that has community support. This year the total allocation is $219,000 over eight categories; • Community and Economic Development Initiatives $30,000 • Arts/Culture/Heritage/Museums $32,000 • Festivals and Events $40,000 • Youth and Children $25,000 • Social Services $21,000 • Environment $20,000 • Emergency Services $16,000 • Sport and Recreation Facilities $35,000 Applications close 31 August 2015. Applications can be made online or you can download an application form at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/community-grants-application Hard copy application forms are available from Council Service Centres and Libraries in Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Murchison. The Council is hosting a survey quizzing residents on their internet speed and access. We need your help to get an accurate picture of what internet access is like for Tasman residents so we can apply for government funding to help improve the situation. The idea of this survey is to gain information on: 1. Demand for broadband and mobile Internet services for home, community and business use across our District 2. Areas with no (or limited/poor) service By completing this survey, local people can help clarify where the greatest needs and demand are in the region. This will support our application for government funding for the next phase of fibre deployment in towns, the next phase of broadband in rural areas, and coverage of what are known as ‘Mobile Black Spots’. There are limited funds available for the extension to the rollout and the Government has signalled the most productive and appropriate needs will be met first. The goal of the application is faster and more reliable internet access in our region. You can support this work by completing the survey yourself if you live in Tasman, or passing it on to friends, neighbours and associates. The more responses we have, the stronger our application. The survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/tasmaninternet
