New home, but no internet A Richmond family who had been told it would be nine months before they’d have access to internet or a phone line in their brand new house are hopeful of a back-flip from the company installing fibre cable. Simon and Lara Gordon built the first house of a new nine-home subdivision near Champion Rd and moved in last week. They were told during the building phase that all new subdivisions have to be in-
stalled with fibre cable, not copper. So they installed the fibre and were only told after they moved in that there are no fibre cables on their road and that they’ll have to wait until March to be connected. They had been in touch with Spark and Chorus to try and find a solution, but have been told repeatedly that there is none. In the meantime, Lara had increased her mobile plan as high as it could go so the family could check their emails.
Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz They say a quote to have copper installed was over $3000. “The thing that annoys us is that they’re putting fibre into streets that already have copper, so already have the internet and a phone,” says Lara.
“The majority of them aren’t going to connect to it and you have all these new subdivisions that have been told they have to have fibre, but they’re not doing those streets.” But, after enquires from Waimea Weekly into the situation, Chorus released a statement saying they would in fact upgrade the Gordons street “within three weeks”.

School fair a ‘crowd pleaser’
The Appleby School Country Fair has always been a crowd pleaser and a magnet for sunshine, fun and community spirit. The school’s major fundraiser has been a popular event since the 90’s and every year it has grown in size, offering the public an array of food, entertainment, fair ground activities, bargains and competitions. “It was fantastic, we had a huge turn out, everybody pitched in and we had a great day,” says fair manager, Laura Southward. “As usual, we worked on parking to make it as smooth as possible for people coming to the fair and we always try and bring something new in, this year it was laser tag and that went really well, particularly for the older kids.” Last year the school managed to raise a record total of $43,500, although the amount raised this year is still to be counted. Laura says because the school didn’t run its art auction this year, they

We had parents helping out on the day whose children have carried on to other schools but wish to be still involved, so it’s just a really nice community feel,” says Laura. The use of the funds from this year’s fair is also yet to be decided.

Local businesses milking new ideas Two Nelson businesses are starting to milk it with their innovative products that are generating interest from retailers and a big following from consumers. Oaklands Farm has just expanded its farm fresh milk operation by installing a new vending machine in the Richmond Mall, while Cafe on Oxford’s owner Guy McCracken is set to market his hazel nut milk around the country. The two businesses are also working together, with Oaklands Farm supplying glass bottles for the hazel nut milk and Guy’s cafe using Oaklands milk. Guy says he only started producing the milk because his parents have 5000 hazel nut trees in Ashburton and he wanted to find a way of using them “that was different”. After six months of research and development, he perfected a recipe for the milk and started trialling it in his cafe with spectacular results. “I have a lot of soy milk coffee drinkers so I trialled it on them and the initial feedback was that they really liked it. The soy and almond milk we get here are all long-life products with stablisers and extra sugar, so the hazel nut milk gave them a

Guy says the milk is simply made from hazel nuts and water, but the key is getting the blend exactly right. In addition to being dairy and gluten free, hazel milk is not pasteurised and lasts longer than convention milk - he is presently producing around 80 litres a month. Oaklands Milk’s Cathy Raine says their latest vending ma-
chine has been set up in Buonissimo Gelato Cafe in the Richmond Mall. She says they started with one vending machine at their Saxton Rd farm gate in June 2013 and now have five around Nelson and Richmond, with number six planned for the Naked Bun in Mapua next month. “People like it because it tastes good,” Cathy says. “We talk to our customers who say they’d forgotten how real milk tastes.” Oaklands also supply milk to 27 cafes around the region and have vending machines in the River Kitchen Cafe and Mean Greens Fruit and Vege in Nelson.

Trampers rescued: Rescuers have been successful in recovering two trampers who got into difficulty in the Nelson Lakes National Park Saturday afternoon. Conditions in the area prevented a helicopter getting to the pair that day but they were picked up about 1pm Sunday during a break in the weather. The Irish woman and Latvian man, both in their mid-twenties, were checked by an advanced paramedic on the mountain and did not require further medical treatment. Search coordinator Senior Constable Dave Colville says the first rescue team to reach the pair early Sunday morning had done an outstanding job to bring them back from a severely hypothermic state prior to the helicopter’s arrival. The rescue team had tramped through the night in snow and high winds to reach the pair about 5.30am. There was a wind chill of -18deg and heavy blowing snow.
Anyone with information should call Nelson Police on 546 3840. Information can also be given by calling Crimestoppers Ph 0800 555 111.
Store ram-raided: A Nelson store had its front doors smashed by a car before thousands of dollars worth of mag wheel rims stolen. Mag and Turbo’s alarm was activated at around 6am this morning, and when security staff arrived it was discovered that the front windows had been smashed and stock stolen. It is believed a vehicle was used to smash the windows on the Vanguard St business.
All Blacks visit Stoke School: Thanks to the video skills of Room 11 at Stoke School, Nelson was visited by none other than the All Blacks on Thursday afternoon. The class entered a three minute video into a national competition to prove they were passionate about the All Blacks, and were among ten winners from around the country. Julian Savea, Owen Franks and Codie Taylor were welcomed into the school

Big grant for velodrome: The Saxton Velodrome and Cycle Safety Arena has received a significant funding boost with The Canterbury Community Trust confirming a $100,000 grant. Work has already started on the $1.6million project, situated at Saxton Stadium, which will see the 333m velodrome facility completed within the next 16 to 20 months. The project is being chiefly funded by Nelson City and Tasman District councils, which are contributing 80 per cent of the total. The Saxton Velodrome Trust is charged with raising the remainder, (approximately $320,000).

GIANT BRANCH BREAKS OFF: Conrad van Reenen, aged four, stands beside a branch of a tree that blew down on the corner of Kelling Rd and Neudorf Rd in Upper Moutere in last week’s high winds. The 30 metre long branch was cleared by roading contractors the following day.
Simon Bloomberg The Arthur Wakefield Motor Inn is under new management after long-term leaseholder Vic Carr left the business after 12 years. Vic says he decided to leave the business after being presented with new opportunities. A representative of the Christchurch syndicate that owns the Arthur Wakefield, Steve Webb, is now acting as interim manager of the Queen St motor inn. Steve says they are planning a relaunch of the cafe later this year although admits the changeover has not gone as smoothly as they would have liked. He claims Vic left owing a number of suppliers money although Vic says he intends to pay everyone as soon as possible. Vic told the Waimea Weekly that he intends to pay everyone but that it is taking some time because he left the business in the middle of the month. “The changeover took place on the weekend in the middle of the month so we are splitting what’s owed,” Vic says. “It’s always going to take some time to reconcile but we are working our way through it.” Vic says he has already made a number of payments to suppliers but wouldn’t say how long it would take to complete the process. “At this stage it’s a work in progress. It’s just a matter of me working my way through it over the next few weeks and balancing it with what is owed to us from the final settlement. “There is money that is owed to us as well. At the moment we are trying to reconcile that and do the best for our local clients.” One of the suppliers that the Waimea Weekly contacted did not want to be named or comment although they confirmed that they had just been paid.

Blokes’ sheds opened for local charity Jessie Johnston
They come in all shapes and sizes and various states of tidiness, and now is the perfect chance to get an up-close and personal look into some of the regions classic kiwi sheds. Graeme Wilson will be amongst those supporting the Life Education Trust by sharing his creations and the shed that houses his passion for woodwork. Joinery has been his life-long career and he certainly had a hard time giving it up for retirement. “I retired three times, first time I lasted until lunch on the first day and then I went out and got a job. I went to Viking Furniture and the guy that was running it said “boy am I pleased to see
someone that can work, I’ve just got the contract to do all the fittings in the Suburban Club and you’re it so go get your tools and come back after lunch” so I did. When we finished all those contracts he became ill and had to give the business away, and I thought it was a good time to retire again, so I did. By the middle of the first day I was hacked off so I went down to Orange Joinery and they had just got the contract for fitting out the apartment blocks round the harbour, so I went home, got my tools and started work. I only wanted to work, I didn’t want to do management which is what I’d been into, so I worked there for a while until their manager left and then I looked after the business until they found another one, which took them a couple of
years because they weren’t actually looking.” When Graeme did retire for the third and final time, woodworking was the obvious choice to keep him busy. “I was used to working, I liked working and I can’t bear sitting still, so I had to find something to do.” A long time love of the outdoors inspired Graeme to build two kayaks, specifically constructed for both him and his wife. His other projects have included grandfather clocks, a roller top desk, nesting tables, his television cabinet and most recently, wooden pictures. Starting out as marquetry – the art of using pieces of veneer to form designs – Graeme has developed the craft into 3D works of art, some being
scenes he has photographed, some of family and others from his imagination. For the Blokes in Sheds tour Graeme will be demonstrating his craft by creating a wooden picture of the Life Education Trusts mascot, Harold the giraffe, as well as offering people a look at the wooden kayaks and other completed woodwork creations Tickets are still on sale for the fundraising tour which will be held on Sunday, September 13, from 10am. The tour will include a wide range of other shed owners’ passions and collections. Tickets are $15 and can be bought off Ticket Direct, GrabOne or by emailing the trust at nelsontasman@lifeedtrust.org.nz. Food will also be available with a pizza oven at Higgins Park and a barbecue at another location.

Awards recognise community efforts Simon Bloomberg
Richmond’s Hazel Bartlett was one of 11 people to be recognised for their services to the community at a ceremony at the Tasman District Council offices in Richmond last week. She also played a key role in fundraising to open the Richmond Kindergarten. The 83-year-old, who “retired” from her voluntary role at the Information Cen-

Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the awards “are a great opportunity to recognise people who have made a big contribution to the community over a long period of time”. “It’s becoming more and more challenging to find volunteers, which makes their contribution even more valuable. Our community would grind to a halt without them,” he says. Golden Bay’s Henk and Willa Visker, Crowther Reynish, Dick Wenzel, Graeme Miller and Sue Netto and Motueka’s Valerie Stuart, Mark Heine, Peter Goodman and Sir Peter Talley also received awards.

Although Hazel was a little reluctant to accept any praise for her lengthy contribution to the community, she says the award highlights the good work carried out by all the volunteers at the Richmond Information Centre. “I had an idea I was getting the award when the council sent me all these papers. I’m not sure about getting an award but it’s nice to be recognised on behalf of everyone who works at the centre”.

Wakefield’s Treasure Box team re-opens store It’s been a busy time for The Treasure Box team who have been hard at work crafting unique pieces in preparation for the summer season. The boutique store is packed with local handmade arts and crafts and they’re now open to the public for the next six months. The Treasure Box is a craft co-operative that was started two years ago by local artist Rose Shepherd to showcase the rural community’s talents. Located on 14 Whitby Way in Wakefield’s village centre, the cooperative is now operated equally by its 22 members. Last Saturday saw its re-opening after a six month break for winter and those who contribute to its contents welcome you to come and have a look. While the term craft may conjure up images of tea cosies and the like, The Treasure Box features a diverse range of quality handcrafted goods

including up-cycled furniture, jewellery, clothing, cushions, skin care products, candles, wooden art and pottery. The artists who make up the cooperative all agree it’s the sharing of the workload and the chance to keep their products in Wakefield, where they were made, that makes The Treasure Box special. You’ll find The Treasure Box’s door open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am until 4pm, late on Thursday nights until 8pm and during December and January they will be open seven days a week. Host families needed for international students Richmond mum Kylie Murdoch is encouraging families around Richmond to sign up to become hosts for Waimea College’s international students saying it’s a great experience for everyone involved. There are 47 international students from Asia, Europe and Brazil at Waimea College with 22 of them attending the school long term as they study for their NCEA. Last year, Kylie’s family hosted German student Laura Birke and they enjoyed the experience so much they signed up to host her twin brother Lucas this year. “When we decided to host a student, I was a bit unsure how it would go,” Kylie says. “But now I can’t imagine not having one at home.” Kylie says the students “add a different dynamic to family life” and make you appreciate the things we have in Nelson. “They make you go out and enjoy the beautiful things we have around here. We tend to take it all for granted paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds but when we take the international students out it reminds you how lucky we are.” Although the main goal of his Lucas’ one year enrolment at Waimea College is to improve his English, he says the benefits are much broader. He is also enjoying making new friends, experiencing the region’s outdoors and becoming part of the Murdoch family. “I wanted to improve my English skills because it’s quite important with the globalisation to be good at English. It’s getting better but there are still lots of new words I don’t know and pronunciations I don’t understand - I’m always looking up the dictionary on my phone. “There are sayings I don’t understand too. I was complaining about getting my shoes dirty all the time and my host mum told me ‘to build a perwhat metre bridge and get over it’ - I didn’t know she was talking about.” Year 12 Thai student, Team Detdetcho agrees learning English is the biggest challenge and there were times when he “just nodded and smiled” when he hasn’t understood someone. But Team, 16, says the key to succeeding as an international student is to go outside your comfort zone and immerse yourself in the school. He says the host families, especially the ones who “accept you as one of their kids” have also played a big part in his life in New Zealand. Now Team, who started his international education at Waimea Intermediate, is more Kiwi than Thai, speaking English with little accent and playing rugby for the Waimea College under-16 team. “I like it here so much I’ve decided to stay and go to uni here and hopefully apply for residency after I graduate.” Waimea College director of international students, Lisa Campbell agrees that host families play a big part in the success of their programme and they are always on the look-out for new recruits. She says the key to selecting a good host family is finding one that “treats the international students as part of their family rather than a boarder”.

Air NZ prices: Following up your Air NZ stories. I was stunned to find that checking in a within-weight bag to Auckland on Friday at the Air NZ counter at the airport now costs $60. Absolutely incredible... I wonder when they (more than) doubled it to this? If this isn’t price gouging, what is? I imagine we’ll now see a change, with increased competition. Regards, Morag Woode. Problems with UFB: Are other people having trouble with UFB phone lines today? We can’t get any incoming calls. And my folks’ phone is also down. Our provider advises that support staff are unavailable. Is it a regional, national problem or just us? Diane Chandler.
Trampers rescued from Nelson Lakes: Good job, rescue team! You are heroes. Helen Childs.
Rock da House: They all done an amazing job and so proud of my girl. Chanelle Moffatt. Jetstar coming to town: Yay! But dump New Plymouth and pick up Invercargill. Be fair Jetstar, pick two in the north and two in the south. Shawnee Burford-Young. Ok, I was a bit reluctant to book with Jetstar with all the horror stories I’ve heard about them. I’ve booked for a conference next year already with them, there will be no issues for me, making sure
of that. Nelson to Auckland return. $9 base rate each way, plus luggage, standard seating convenience and booking fee = $28 each way. Depending on what you’re after, it can even be cheaper, or just slightly more. Thank you for coming to Nelson Jetstar. Josh van der Schaaf. That’s great news!! Whoo hoo. Lindbom C Jo. Will not stop me flying Air NZ! Joy Davenport. Trampers rescued in Nelson Lakes park: Great job all involved. What would we do without these great volunteers who give up so much of their time to help others and save lives. Karen Ferguson.
Car goes through fence at supermarket: Maybe now they will do something about the fence, like fix it. If you walk along the full length of the fence you can see where cars have nearly ended up like this one did. Faye Tito. Wow! Spatial awareness, people. That’s not the brake. No need to accelerate into a carpark. Think about what you are doing. Andrea Grocott. Poor couple that did this probably feeling pretty shaken without bring plastered all over the papers. Everyone makes mistakes while driving, fortunately no one was hurt. Di Gingell. To have your say on any local issue, simply email editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz.

CAR PARKING FAIL: A car smashed through a fence at the Whareama Rest Home in Stoke, on Friday. The car came from the Countdown supermarket car park, through the fence and was left with the front of the car hanging over the edge of the car park and into a driveway at Whareama. Staff at Whareama say no residents were hurt in the accident. Photo: Leroy Bull.

Focus on Farming the lay. If yours have not come back into the lay yet, then maybe it is time to ‘refresh’ your laying flock with some young pullets that will lay lots of eggs for you. There’s no point in feeding fowls that are not going to lay. Here at Appletons we always have brown shaver pullets at the start of their laying lives. Well grown, well fed and raised in hen houses with access to green paddocks. We love our chooks. We have plenty of 17 week old pullets that are ready to go to new homes. This is a great age to get your new girls as it gives them time to settle into their new environment and routine before they come into the lay between 18 to 24 weeks. Talk to Appletons today on 542 3224. If you asked Steve and Margaret Sangster what one of life’s biggest injustices is, it could be that the whitebait season coincides with the arrival

Interest Free Loans for Residential Builds
For a better home loan deal tailored to your lifestyle, talk to the Nelson Building Society (NBS). NBS offers a competitive range of home loan options. It’s often difficult to afford loan repayments during the construction period of a new home, as well as paying rent. We currently have a special offer for residential build loans, during the construction period. Approved customers have the opportunity to pay no interest for the first three months of their build loan. This interest free period could save thousands of dollars. A number of builders aim to start and finish their residential builds within a 3 month period, so NBS approved customers could pay no interest during the construction of their new home. No registered valuations will be required for progress payments and competitive fixed rate options will be available upon completion of the build. We also offer a simple, quick and no fuss approval for clients wanting to see if they qualify. Call into your local NBS Branch today.

Just a thought...
I am currently reading a book called “Real, Good Church: How our church came back from the dead”, written by Molly Phinney Baskette and I have found a very interesting article. Ten reasons why you should be coming to church. 10. Coming to church doesn’t mean you have no doubts about God or faith or religion. It means you have a place you can share with people who have their own doubts. 9. Bad stuff is going to happen in your life. It just is. A church community cannot be everything to everyone in times of crisis, but when the bottom falls out of your world, it’s great to have a community to lift you back up. 8. Bad stuff is going to happen in your life, part two. The time to build a relationship with God is not when life turns ugly, and you’ve run out of all other options. Attending wor- Martin Sungchel Oh, Richmond ship regularly helps build a reMethodist lationship with God and othChurch. ers that will give you a solid foundation when the storms come. 7. Not all churches are anti-something. Most of us are for people, for acceptance, for hospitality. Really, we’re out there. We just don’t get the good press. 6. Any church worth its salt has really good food on a regular basis. 5. Churches offer paint-by-number opportunities to serve. Churches offer you ways to plug in to help those who need it most. 4. You’ve got a gift. Probably two or 10 of them. Becoming involved in the ministry of a church will help you discover and use gifts you never even knew you had. 3. Not all churches are after your money. Good churches want you have a healthy relationship with money. It’s about your own relationship with money. Church can help you with that. 2. Taking a break from our hectic lives to come to church is accepting the gift of rest. 1. Jesus is really cool. Even if you don’t know if you can believe in the whole Son-of-God thing, even if you refer to the resurrection as the Zombie Jesus event and even though those of us already in church often do a lousy job of following him, come to church to get to know Jesus. The more you get to know him, the more you’ll understand why people call his way The Way.

Hope Tennis Club is on the lookout for new members, so if you’ve ever fancied taking up a racket and having a hit around, now’s your chance to give it a go and improve your tennis skills. The club will be holding its open day on Sunday, September 13 from 1pm and are looking for some fresh new faces to enjoy the sport that offers something for all ages. Even if the idea of playing tennis is still just a thought in the back of your mind, come along and meet the club, have a fun day and maybe a membership will be for you. The day will kick off at 1pm with two hours of social tennis and everybody is welcome - bring the whole family along if you’d like. Club coach, Ngaire Calder, will have plenty of fun games lined up to entertain the juniors, who will get their rackets provided if they don’t have one. Adults are asked to bring a plate so at 3pm everyone can enjoy a shared afternoon tea, after which the club president, Mary Stebbings, will be overseeing the AGM. Anyone who wishes to is welcome to stay for this too. The Hope Tennis Club was established in 1957 and is located in the peaceful, rural setting of the Hope Domain. Work starts on Trafalgar Centre Work on upgrading the Trafalgar Centre will get underway this week, nearly two years after the building was closed. Local firm Gibbons Construction have been appointed to do the physical works, and are already beginning to establish themselves onsite. The long-awaited project was given the green light at a council meeting last month, and the start of the work comes as a relief for many. The iconic building has been closed since December 2013 after it was deemed an earthquake risk. The project will be separated into five different packages, which include: compliance works and ground improvements, the southern extension, the main building, external works and maintenance
on the main building, the northern building and the Rutherford Park redevelopment. The total confirmed budget for the project in the 2015/16 financial year, excluding the Rutherford Park work, is $12.289 million. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says she is happy with the progress. “It is pleasing to see that the work will begin now. We all look forward to seeing this major project progress, so that our city can benefit from using this asset to bring large conferences and events into Nelson.” Nelson City councillor Gaile Noonan is also thrilled that the council are getting on with the project. “We’ve done all the research, and now I hope that it all goes smoothly,” she says.

The connections of pacer Taittinger Rose had plenty to celebrate at the Nelson Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association annual awards at Nelson Suburban Club on Saturday. Taittinger Rose was named Horse of the Year after recording three wins, all at Manawatu, for Richmond trainer Ian Thomas. Ian was named Trainer of the Year, while Taittinger Rose’s owners, Marie and Ted Steele, Darryl and Kath Eginton and Sue and Nicole Thomas were named Owners of the Year. Dave Neale and Kevin Sturgeon’s Major Patron won the Joe Hill Memorial Cup, Tookie Inwood’s Tarn won the Peter Malone Memorial Cup, Bishop Brian’s win at the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s summer meeting was named Best Run at Richmond Park while the Unsung Hero Award went to Roger Ferguson. Sue, who is also the association’s president, says the awards celebrated a good season by Nelson trainers who recorded 11 wins, 10 seconds and 11 thirds during 2014-2015. “When you consider the small number of trainers and horses, this is a huge effort from a small club like ours,” Sue says. “It’s proof that we can foot it with the big boys. “I personally feel it just reinforces to the industry that the small clubs like ours are the backbone of harness racing and can be competitive despite their limitations”. Harness Racing New Zealand’s race manager, Darrin Williams, was guest speaker at the awards.

Jacks OPD through to premier final Jacks OPD are through to the premier club netball final at Saxton Stadium this Saturday, but it will have to wait until Thursday's minor semi-final to see whether it will be Prices or Richmond it will face. Semi-finals were played for all grades at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, and there were a number of intense battles for a berth in next week’s finals. All grades, excluding Premier, have a 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 format with the winners progressing to the final. The elite grade has a minor and major semi-final with 1 v 2, with the winner advancing to the final while the loser plays the winner of the 3 v 4 in the major semi on Thursday night. Prices Pharmacy A and Stoke NBS fought out a rugged encounter in the 3 v 4 minor semi-final, with Prices having a 27–23 lead at the major break. Stoke fought back to win the second half 31– 28, however Prices had the final say when Shar Lowe nailed the final goal with seconds on the clock. The stand out player on court was Stoke captain Megan Thomson, who scored 41 from

43 for a 95 per cent average. She was on the end of a number of long range, precision feeds and at times was asked to take some difficult ball. Jacks OPD entered their 1 v 2 major semi-final as favourites against Richmond Glass, who were without the services of Lisa and Amiee Book. While Richmond still had a wealth of skill and experience on court they were no match for the in-form green team. The Jacks shooters were receiving an abundance of stress-free ball and were converting at will (86 per cent), and while the Richmond shooters were not far behind (80 per cent) they were not getting the same opportunities in the 73–35 result. With Jacks claiming one berth in the final, it is now down to Richmond and Prices to fight it out for the second. The teams have shared the spoils in the competition with Prices claiming the first

is their final. Lisa will anchor the mid court and provide the link through court, while Kat Jones will lead the defensive end. Kathleen Thornalley and Amiee are an effective shooting duo, while Kim Starnes could also don a shooting bib. After a perfect record of 12 wins from 12 games, Prices stumbled to loose the final two games in regular competition before defeating Stoke. Coach Mandy Whiting has a versatile lineup with four accomplished shooters, a plethora of options in the mid court, and a couple of options in the defensive circle. While Chelsea Brooks got the nod as the starting goal shoot, Shar Lowe certainly played her way into contention with her contribution on Saturday. Mahina Selby-Law can play at either end of the court, however she has put in some commendable performances at goal attack. Thursday’s game could go right down to the wire, however, if Jacks put in another clinical performance like Saturday neither Richmond or Prices are likely to come close... but anything can happen in finals netball.

The Church is not an island. The Church on the Hill wants to be even more involved with the community it has been part of for more than 130 years. For the last nine years it has been fund raising for a new community centre, to be called “The Lantern”, and it is intended that construction can begin next year.
SECTION C-C THROUGH HALL LOOKING WEST
The Church moved to the present, central, elevated site in Richmond in 1853 and the adjacent wooden hall, now well past its use by date, was built in the CC DD 1880s.
The motivation The hall is used by a diverse group of local organisations, as well as by the Church for its own members’ meetings and social activities. Surveys have shown a clear requirement for new facilities to cater for expanding needs. Lunch on the Hill is provided every fortnight but the kitchen can no longer function efficiently; it is just not up to it. There is a twice-weekly creche but better playing facilities are needed for the children.
The plan
The plan is to build a multi-purpose facility on the Church site opposite Richmond School, with which there is a long-standing inter-action. It will be a place for local groups to call home and provide their special brand of action.
Afternoon Women’s Fellowship
The building design includes an auditorium to seat over 200, which can be used as a performing arts centre, and an area for people to relax after bringing children to school or busy shopping. There are two meeting rooms than can be joined into one larger room to accommodate up to 40 people. There is a dedicated youth room and a commercial kitchen to cater for functions, such as weddings. There also is a sound proofed room where musicians can practise their renditions.
Monday 28 September 7–9 pm Topical non-religious subjects
The building has been architectually designed and complies with the latest building code. It could serve 2 as an emergency shelter in case of a disaster.

Brothers capture Wily Weka Simon Bloomberg Nelson brothers Huw and Rhys John may be relatively new to the area, but they had no problems finding their way around on Sunday when they raced through Richmond and Stoke on their way to winning the Wily Weka Challenge. The brothers formed one of the 86 teams entered in the Nelson Orienteering Club's event that involved finding controls marked on a map of Richmond, Stoke and Monaco. The controls were allocated points depending on their difficulty and Huw and Rhys amassed an impressive 3060 points in six hours. "We went into the Richmond foothills first and then out to Stoke and up into the hills around Panorama Drive," Huw says. "The hills were the easiest part, which sounds strange, but we found it so hard pounding the pavements - it was hard on the legs." Huw says they were using the race as the official starting point for their training for the Godzone Adventure race in the Nelson-Tas-
man region next April. "It was the first hit out for the season," Rhys says. "We did Godzone in different teams last year, but we are in the same team this time so it was a good chance to race together and see how we went." Dave Quested and Kim Hawkes won the mixed team's six-hour section with 2860 points, Marjolein Edwards, Pam Morris and Jacqui MacIntyre won the women's section with 2310 points, Wayne Hennessy and Roderick Morrison won the family section and Garin College's Trudi Kent, Molly Inman, Anya Schultz and Kate McCashin won the junior section with 1230 points. Duncan Darroch, Dexter Buchanan and Nicky Baxter were the best of the three-hour teams, winning the mixed section with 1730 points. Irene Firestone, Anna Gibbons and Mel Shirley won the women's section with 1420 points, Chris and Samuel Charles and Bryn Thurlow won the family section with 1280 points, while Nigel Kelly, Malcolm Edridge and Brad Wallace won the men's section with 1400 points.
