Richmond turned on a glorious sunny day for the annual market day on December 29. Thousands of eager shoppers filled the streets to peruse the stalls, enjoy the roving entertainment, and sit back and sample some of the delicious food on of-
fer. Richmond Unlimited’s event coordinator Charlotte Bidlake says that she was absolutely delighted with the day. “I was thrilled with the turnout and how vibrant the street looked,” she says. “There was such a great atmosphere, and everyone was having a good time.” The annual market day is typi-
cally the busiest day of the year for Richmond, but this year it was bigger and better than ever. “The past few years the weather hasn’t played ball, but it was an absolutely stunning day,” says Charlotte. Over 100 stalls offered a fabulous range of fresh summer fruits, crafts, clothing, art, jewellery, books, toys and confectionary. There were also roving entertain-
ers including the stilt-walking Twisty Twinz, Faery Lou, magicians and jugglers, as well as face painting and balloon twisting from Flossie the Balloon Lady. Made for Men was one of numerous local businesses that took to the street, setting up an outdoor stall. Owner Warren Ludemann says they’ve been setting up an outside stall since 1999, and that it’s always a great way to get in-
volved. “It was a beautiful day with plenty of people,” says Warren. “It’s so well organised and well run.” Ambrosia owner Mishael Sowman says that the weather was perfect, and the market drew a great mix of locals and holidaymakers. “The entire day had a really good feel to it,” she says.

Local lads nail record breaking canyon expedition Charles Anderson They were searching on a topographical map for a long time before they found it. There were lines stacked on top of each other – it was steep, that was for sure. There was no record of it ever being fully mapped and no record that it had ever been done. It was a spot in the Richmond Ranges, inaccessible by anything but a helicopter. It was 1200m high and contained an unknown number of waterfalls. It was marked by kiwicanyons.org as a “potential canyon” requiring a “serious undertaking”. For a group of Nelson mates wanting to put their canyoning skills to the test, it was perfect. The sport involves descending creeks – setting anchors, then abseiling and jumping down waterfalls until you reach the bottom. If they managed to pull the expe-

So, six months Molloy, Daniel Penney and Bodhi Bettjeman, to train for the ago, the plan was hatched. “We had done a couple of other expedition, as well as cameraman ones and the boys loved it,” says George Guille to document it all. So, on December 13, armed with donated gear from Aspiring Safety, they boarded a helicopter and headed for the peak. “The first waterfall was on the map, but when we got up there we saw there were two more right after it. It was pretty clear that nobody had ever been here,” says Daniel. George says that was the appeal -and the challenge. “You just don’t know what you are going to find. Even with rope lengths, we were just estimating. The biggest thing is the unknown.” Then there was the reality that after you finished the first abseil, there was no going back. “A couple of us are reasonable
climbers, but you can’t climb a waterfall,” says Neil. It also wasn’t clear how long the descent would take but James says he was prepared to spend a night, cold and wet, in the bush. They had done a food drop earlier – walking up as far as they could from the other direction. But by the time they arrived, possums had got there first. “All there was were wrappers,” says Bodhi. They pushed on into the early evening and eventually, after 13 hours, they walked out. They had descended three, 120 metre waterfalls and 10 others between six and 30 metres. For all the large ones they had to drill and set their own anchors. “It’s pretty insane what we did,” says James. “It’s just a tight little crack in the side of the mountain. It was a monster.”

Richmond sunniest spot in New Zealand … sort of
Judene Edgar The “wider Nelson region” may be the sunshine winner, but it’s all thanks to Richmond. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese has challenged NIWA over the use of outdated recording technology at Nelson Airport since Richmond won the top spot in 2016. NIWA released their 2017 Annual Climate Summary on Monday, and noted that they had created a new regional sunshine ranking for the first time this year. “The regional sunshine ranking reflects the highest sunshine hours in local authority regions, except for Nelson which has been extended to include the wider Nelson ur-
ban area (i.e. including Richmond),” the report states. NIWA forecaster Ben Noll confirmed that, due to the proximity to Nelson, the Richmond recorder readings, located at the Richmond Racecourse, were included within the Nelson region rather than the Tasman region. Richmond recorded 2633 hours of sunshine, ahead of Marlborough on 2605 hours and Hawke’s Bay with 2504 hours. Richmond Unlimited vicechairperson Belinda de Clercq says it’s wonderful that Richmond has been recognised, once again, as the sunniest town in New Zealand. “It solidifies the region’s status as the sunshine capital, but
also Richmond’s title as the sunniest town,” she says. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is thrilled with the results but says that he is happy to share with our Nelson neighbours. “We are a very sharing community and we are happy to share our sunshine across the Nelson Tasman region,” he says. “It’s great to live in a place with such a sunny climate where we can enjoy great beaches, rivers, mountains, alpine areas and national parks.” Richard says that the sunny weather has been a real boon for tourism as well as for local events such as the Richmond Market Day.

It’s a wrap! Judene Edgar A team of nine Waimea College students wrapped nearly 20,000 presents at the Richmond Mall, raising just under $1600 for local charity Walk with Us. Each Christmas the Richmond Mall run a free gift-wrapping service from the start of December, and collect donations for charity. “People have the opportunity to give a donation to support a worthwhile charity,” says Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq. “Each year we select a different charity to support.” Walk with Us were the happy recipients of a donation of $1597. Charity president Sue Cross says that she was absolutely amazed at the generosity of the Richmond Mall and their customers. “It’s so generous and helps us to provide school and sports shoes for children in need,” says Sue. Sue estimates that the donation will provide approximately 32 pairs of shoes for children aged

With the new school year starting soon, Sue says it’s a busy time for them and the demand for shoes is increasing. Belinda says that she was delighted that the Richmond Mall customers were so generous this Christmas, with the
donation nearly double that of previous years. “I think people appreciate the opportunity to give back to a local charity and to support their work,” she says. “It really shows that every cent counts.” Any local charities interested in being the recipient of this year’s gift-wrapping donations can contact Belinda at belinda@richmondmall.co.nz.

Apple rescue feeds families Judene Edgar It was a rescue mission with a difference, when Kai Rescue came to the aid of Heartland Group Ltd in Richmond recently. At the end of the season Heartland Group had surplus apples, but instead of turning them into pulp or juice, started donating them to local schools and kindies. However, this wasn’t enough and “we wanted to do something worthwhile with them,” says Heartland Group spokesperson Jamie Sweet. “After a bit of homework, we found a wonderful local cause named Kai Rescue.” Kai Rescue is a food-rescue charity run by the Nelson Environment Centre. Started in March 2017, Kai Rescue collects food that is good enough to eat, but either not good enough to sell or an organisation wants to donate, as in the case of Heartland Group. “We offer a pick-up service which turns a potential hassle into an opportunity – reducing food waste, filling hungry tummies, and freeing up charities to focus on their core purposes rather than food collection,” says Kai Rescue coordinator Karen Driver. Currently they work with 44 recipient charities and community groups that all work with people in need. They have 28 volunteers, and to date have “rescued” 57 tonnes of food in nine months, including approximately one and a half tonnes of apples from Heartland Group. “By donating rather than discarding their food surplus, retailers can have a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged people,” says Karen. “Together we can ensure that no one in Nelson Tasman goes hungry while useable food is thrown away.” Sione Lata from the Nelson Tasman Pasifika Community Trust says that, thanks to Kai Rescue, they’ve been able to reach and support a lot more families. “It’s good for the families to get healthy food. They are very happy to receive fruit and vegetables, especially for the children,” says Sione. “Kai Rescue are really well organised and save us a lot of time – it’s a very good service.” Approximately one-third of the food that is produced in New Zealand is thrown away. Redistributing food that is good enough to eat reduces the strain on landfills and provides a sustainable solution for managing food surpluses. To find out more about Kai Rescue or to talk to them about donating surplus food, go to nec. org.nz or phone 545 9176.

The family that scouts together Judene Edgar When Sam Burke joined the Wakefield Scout group in 2009, he didn’t realise that the rest of his family would be joining him too. His mother Angela started as a parent helper when Sam started Keas, “and then they needed Cub leaders, so up goes the hand,” says Angela. “Then they needed Kea leaders, so I did that too, and when the zone leader was unwell and there was a sleepover for 30 kids to organise, up goes the hand again.” And eight years later, Angela is still Nelson zone leader for Keas. “I love running fun days and watching their faces as they’re learning something new.” Angela also loved watching her two eldest children receive the highest awards in the Scout and Venturer sections at the end of last year, with 15-year-old Sam gaining the Chief Scout Award, and 18-year-old Ashleigh the Queen’s Scout Award. Sam’s journey to achieving the Chief Scout Award involved first obtaining his bronze, silver, and gold awards, and then completing additional tasks for the Chief Scout Award. One of the tasks involved learning a new skill, and

And despite pouring rain for much of their last day, Sam says “it was so much fun.” Sam is now moving on to Venturers this year and is already aiming to get his Queen’s Scout Award. For Ashleigh, receiving the Queen’s Scout Award as well as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, topped off a great final year at Waimea College where she also received the Year 13 award for mechanical engineering. Ashleigh started Guides at age five, but changed to Scouts when she was 10, shortly after Sam started. “The tramps are definitely my favourite,” she says. Another highlight for Ashleigh was attending an aviation camp in Canterbury where she got to go up in a glider and a hot air balloon. “We had a go at flying gliders and an aircraft mechanic came and taught us about the mechanics of flight,” the budding engineer says. Off to Canterbury University next month to study engineering, Ashleigh is looking at joining the Rovers section of scouts which focuses on leadership skills.

Richmond library is going to be playing host to “two nowaste nomads talking trash with people” on Thursday, January 18. Hannah Blumhardt runs ‘The Rubbish Trip’ with her partner Liam Prince, and they are currently travelling the entire country, full-time for a year, delivering free talks about how individuals can reduce their household rubbish. “Since the beginning of 2015 we have lived without a rubbish bin, so we wanted to share our experience with others,” says Hannah. “Our approach is to give people easy and practical tips for waste reduction, and show, by example, that living without a bin is possible and fun.” Each year two-and-a-half million tonnes of waste is buried in New Zealand landfills. Despite encouraging increases in recycling, last year Tasman district produced 57,000 tonnes of waste, up from 55,000 tonnes the previous year, with each person contributing on average

Council spokesperson Chris Choat says that any opportunity for people to discuss ways to reduce waste is always welcome. Before the talks, Hannah and Liam do their homework, compiling local zero-waste shopping guides - inventories of stores, local services and community groups that
offer options and support for low-waste living. Hannah says that a combination of innovation, overseas ideas and their own research and experiences have helped them to be bin-free. “So far, we have spoken in eight regions, and delivered over 100 presentations to over 5000 people,” she says. “As we travel the country de-

Destination Wakefield, rain or shine Judene Edgar Wakefield was the destination of choice last week with the annual Wakefield Community Craft Fair on January 2 and the Destination Wakefield open day on January 7. The Craft Fair was welcomed by some light rain, but organisers say that it didn’t put a dampener on the day. “The stall holders were awesome and carried on,” says organizing committee member Maxine McKean. “Having use of the hall meant that we had a lot of stallholders in there also, which was great.” Stallholder Debbie Brooks, who was there with her selection of wooden crafts and pyrography, says that it was
a wonderful day with a great atmosphere and lots of positive feedback. “It’s great - there’s been a continual flow of people all day,” she says. Attendees were entertained with live music from Pete Madsen, Matt Werner and local duo Shane and Ang. The Craft Fair raised $600 towards the historic mural restoration and Higgins Heritage Park ran a special Steam Up day in conjunction with the fair which raised a further $400. Mural Group member Evie South says that it was fantastic to receive this level of support from the community and that the donation was “the icing on the cake”. The crowds headed back to Wakefield again on Sunday for the monthly

Destination Wakefield open day. The sunny day saw Willow Bank Heritage Village absolutely humming. Richmond resident Wendy Cornish says that she comes each month because there’s always something new to see. “The children’s playhouse and cactus garden are new,” she
says. And despite going home with bags of lemons, garlic, homemade lemonade and some books, Wendy’s load was lighter having donated some plates and crockery. “There are more people every time we come, which is fantastic,” says her friend Susie Park. While there is a dress-up room
for people to try on period costumes and get their photograph taken, owner Christine Grieder says that an increasing number of visitors get into the spirit coming along in vintage clothes. “It’s great to see more and more people dressing up and enjoying the village,” she says.

Variety is the key to hospice vehicle show
11

Andrew Board Founders Heritage Park will be petrol-head heaven later this month when the Nelson Tasman Hospice Vehicle Display rolls into town. All vehicles "of interest" are invited to come and take part in the show, from vintage cars and motorbikes, to hot rods, restored military vehicles and race cars. "It doesn't matter what it is," says organiser Dave Verry. "We want to show a bit of everything to give those coming a bit of variety." Dave says this is the second show that has been held for the hospice, with last year's efforts raising more than $5000. This year, he says the show has been moved from April to January to capture more of the tourists in town for the summer holidays. "We've had great support so far from local vehicle owners, I've had several groups say that they'll come along so we should get at least the 170 vehicles that we had last year." For vehicle owners wanting to take part in the January 14 show, the cost is $5 per vehicle and they can find out more by calling Dave on 027 447 1300. For people wanting to head along to view the vehicles the cost is $5 per adult, or $10 per family. Public viewing opens at 10am and runs until 2pm. All proceeds from the day will go to the Nelson Tasman Hospice.

A stained-glass Tiffany lampshade shattered during the Christchurch earthquake launched the career of Richmond artist Sharon Carroll. A member of Art Group Nelson, Sharon will be displaying her glass mosaics at Queens Gardens next Saturday as part of the group’s annual exhibition. The one-day-only event has been a Nelson institution for more than 30 years and sees Queens Gardens transformed into an outdoor art gallery. Around 50 artists will be exhibiting and selling their original work – ranging from paintings to woodwork to garden art. Sharon shifted to Nelson four years ago after the Christchurch earthquake, seeking new opportunities, and little did she know that her broken lampshade would be the catalyst for a successful new career. Wanting to hold onto the lampshade somehow, “I went to a ceramics course and started making butterflies and dragonflies using the glass from it and proceeded from there,” she says. “I love making gorgeous things out of unloved or broken things. Every piece tells a

Bernard is also an artist and will be exhibiting his mixed media works at the exhibition. They are both looking forward to the beautiful outdoor set-
ting at Queens Gardens and say that it’s a great event. Art Group Nelson holds two exhibitions each year - Queens Gardens in the summer and a winter exhibition at the Stoke Memorial Hall in June. The Queens Gardens Art Exhibition is on Saturday, January 20, from 10am to 5pm. If wet, it will be held on Sunday, January 21. Lawn bowlers champions again Andrew Board Journalist
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson's reputation as a breeding ground for top lawn bowlers will have only grown at this week's Bowls NZ National Open Championships in Dunedin, with the region laying claim to four of the top six titles. World Champion Shannon McIlroy, of the Stoke club, won the men's singles title, with former United Club bowler Jo Edwards claiming the women's singles crown. In the doubles, former Stoke member Ali Forsyth won the men's title with Gary Lawson.
In the fours, a composite team of Shannon, Ali, Gary and Justin Goodwin also won. It could have been another championship for Nelson with Amy McIlroy's composite team losing a very tight womens fours final. For Jo, the win was her fifth national title, earning her a Bowls NZ gold star. "It’s pretty special," she told the Otago Daily Times. The two national titles for Shannon caps off a thrilling 13 months for the reigning Nelson Sportsman of the Year, winning the world title at the end of 2016, the national singles title in early 2017, and now retaining it in 2018.

Lewis claims a double at Port Street Races Andrew Board Journalist
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson builder Johnny Lewis claimed a pair of titles at the Port Nelson Street Races last week. Johnny won the Formula 3 and Bears classes to finish the best of the Nelson riders in front of several thousands fans. He says he was "thrilled" with the two titles. "It was a terrific day really, once it dried up the track got faster and it was pretty exciting to be a part of." Johnny says he races all over New Zealand so it was nice
to be on his "home" track. "It's great to have some friends come down, it really is my favourite event of the year." He says the rain made the track "tricky" early in the day, but as it dried out it got easier. Dan McKenzie of Christchurch won the King of the Port title, which sees the top riders from throughout the day face-off in the day's final race. In the Formula One class it was Jayden Carrick of Whanganui who took home the title. Organiser Adrian Curtis says the day was a huge success
for the event, that took a year off in 2016. "The event was really good," says Adrian. "The key things are that we were able to get the event up and running again after having a year off. I think a lot of people thought that would be the end of it but a lot of work from a lot of people have helped make it a success. "I'm also so proud of our volunteers who make this event happen. "They stand in the rain just to help make this event run, it's pretty bloody amazing." He says the event will be back next summer.
"People love it, the riders go very quick and it’s exciting to see. So we're keen to continue our good relationship with the Port, and as it expands and grows the race will evolve as well." He hopes the event will become part of a "Speed Week" that could encompass a range of other events like drag racing, rally-cross, motor-cross, as well as car and motorbike displays. Another highlight for Adrian was the number of first-time racers at the event. "More than half were competing here for the first time, so it was great to see so many come here and give it a go."

"But if I would have maintained that pace, I would have ended up in the hospital.” He settled for a course record and a 5min36sec cushion over runner-up Glen Ferguson, who finished in 36min46sec. Craig Lautenslager won last Monday’s Shoe Clinic New Year’s Day 10K Run in 31min10sec, but it was not his first run of the new year. That came at midnight with Craig’s father Greg and a younger brother on the dark roads near his home in Hope. It was a two-mile run from one-year-to-the-next, a tradition his father started when he was in high school 43 years ago. Craig first ran 'one-year-tothe-next' 10 years ago at age 14 with his father, during a teammate’s 21st birthday party off Lower Queen Street. The midnight run was much easier than the run 15 hours later. Craig, an Athletics Nelson runner who won the 2017

Plenty of racing action for Speedway fans Jody Scott
Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Milestone Top of the South Speedway avoided the wet weather over the past few weeks to run their Christmas meeting on December 30. The last round of the Club TQ Championship was a hotlycontested one. Alicia MacLauchlan was going for a three-peat, but it meant missing a round of the Hydralink War of the Wings held in Cromwell. With points leader Darkie Armstrong out after a concussion from the previous meeting, consistency was the name of the game to secure the required points. Two 5ths in the heats and a 3rd in the feature gave her the title once again, by 28 points. There were a few incidents to

avoid, including a rollover in heat 1 which put a couple of cars out. Morgan Frost took the win and gained enough points over the meeting to secure 3rd overall. Feature specialist Jayden Corkill also ticked over enough points to claim 2nd spot. The southern Midget series had a few drivers missing this round. Tom Lumsden, currently 2nd on points, had an evening to forget, with a huge roll on the opening race off the start. They fixed the car to just make the feature race. But it was local driver Gavin Wilkie who dominated, leading from start to finish. The Youth Ministocks rocked up with a full field. The class is very even this year, making for competitive racing. A hard-fought win in the final heat gave Cameron Thompson his 1st at his home track after

four seasons of trying. Aaran Findlay picked up the Streetstock closed champs, while a combined Stock car/Super stock class produced some good entertainment. The Tasman Thunder were in Auckland for the NZ Stock car teams championship. They made the finals' night but lost to eventual beaten finalist Wellington in their first race before bouncing back to beat last year’s champions Auckland in their final race of the night. Connor Rangi continued his golden run at the War of the Wings in Cromwell over Christmas, a 6th in the feature keeping him in 3rd spot overall. They return to Nelson this weekend for the 6th instalment of the Hydralink “War of the Wings” series along with the final round of Production saloon club champs. ple is sim tipple e r lu o a F st v k. g a be e wee and Findin picks of th iation c y e r m p p cal a lo h with t r r u a -to-e to yo in ll a down c , more ask. much d just y’s an r n e H

Stay safe on the water
The Skatepark Tour is back – it’s a chance for young people to show off their skate, BMX and scootering skills and compete against other contestants. Eight competitions are scheduled across the Nelson Tasman region from 6 January 2018, with more than $5,000 of prizes on offer. Competitors span three age groups – junior (5 – 11 years), senior (12 – 17 years), and open (18+ years). Sport Tasman have come on board again to run the events this year and their support, along with that of our generous sponsors Cheapskates, Village Cycles and Skydive Abel Tasman, means the tour remains a free community event. Alcohol-free event. Entries are taken on the day. Helmets are compulsory for all competitors. Visit www.tyc.co.nz to see the programme.
It’s going to be a great summer for heading out on the water. Harbourmaster Dan Cairney will be out and about offering advice and help to anyone who needs it – stay safe and enjoy yourselves. As well as arming yourself with information about the rules of the sea, it’s a really good idea to take heed of local knowledge about the area you’re heading into. You can find a wealth of advice and information on our website – head to www.tasman.govt.nz/boating.
Road resealing work begins Our annual road resealing programme is underway to ensure a safe and properly maintained road network. Work begins in 2018 in Murchison, followed by Waimea, Golden Bay, Riwaka and Tapawera. All the resealing is expected to be complete by the end of February. We try to minimise inconvenience for residents where possible, and respectfully ask everyone to be patient and follow any directions from the contractors on site. Please note that on-road parking will be restricted on work sites and there will be temporary limited access to property for pedestrians and vehicles during the construction. This is to allow full access for the construction machinery and allow the job to be completed as quickly as possible.
Trade in your old lifejackets The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is now underway, with the van travelling to boat ramps in our region this summer. We're encouraging boaties to bring down their old, damaged or worn lifejackets to the Old4New van, for a great discount on a brand new, fit-for-purpose Hutchwilco lifejacket. Over the last three years of the campaign over 8,000 lifejackets have been traded in, meaning thousands of boaties are now safer on the water. Van Location Schedule • Saturday 20 January, 9.00 am – 1.00 pm: Akersten Street Boat Ramp, Nelson • Sunday 21 January, 8.00 am – 11.00 am: Bays Boating, 15 King Edward Street, Motueka
Navigation Safety Bylaw: Temporary reservations and speed limit uplifting for maritime events. Pursuant to provisions of the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2015, the Tasman District Council Harbourmaster has (or may soon) grant authorisations for the following known events during the holiday period. Other events may also occur during this time but the Harbourmaster has not yet received further applications. Event: Tata Titanic Cardboard Boat Race Date: 14 January Location: Tata Beach Event: Jet Boating Family Day Date: 21 January Location: Lake Rotoiti Event: Waka Ama Event Date: 9 – 10 February Location: Lake Rotoiti TBA Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Regatta TBA Lake Rotoiti Classic Boat Show Due to Navigation Safety requirements, water users not involved in these events may be excluded from defined areas during these activities. Notices will be placed at nearby access points during these events. Further details for these and any new events may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/boating.
Freedom Camping Bylaw 2017 The rules for freedom camping in Tasman District have changed. To find out where you can and can’t freedom camp in our District, head to www.tasman.govt.nz/ link/freedom-camping for details of the new Freedom Camping Bylaw 2017.
• Sunday 21 January, 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm: Kaiteriteri Beach Front, opposite the campground, Kaiteriteri-Sandy Bay Road.
Camping numbers limited at McKee Memorial Recreation Reserve Pressure on some of our infrastructure at the McKee Memorial Recreation Reserve means we need to limit the number of campers at the site this summer. Most of the reserve is still open for camping, however please be aware we may need to turn campers away if the site gets too full and there will be a small area that is not available for camping. The sewage system at the reserve comes under pressure during heavy rain, so in the event of stormy weather please be aware the dump station could be closed at short notice. Alternative dump stations can be found at Hickmott Carpark, Motueka, and Fittal St, Richmond. The toilets may also need to be closed for short periods of time after rain. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank campers for their patience while we work on a long-term fix.
